How Grove City Brewing Company became a champion for the small business community

Trevor Luther was a Grove City transplant from upstate New York and a home brewer. His wife, Samantha Wiggins Luther, grew up in Grove City, and it was through her that Trevor met Dave and Diane Crosby, owners of Plum Run Winery. “Dave was interested in getting a brewery going, heard about my home brewing, and asked if I was interested in partnering.” And so Grove City Brewing Company (GCBC) was born, joining the winery in a building in the city’s Town Center. “I’m glad it worked out this way,” Luther says. “I love the downtown area. It’s very quaint, has a nice hometown feel, and is a great place to be.”

In fact, Luther collaborated with a few other small mom and pop businesses on an ale called “Altogether Adventure

Ale,” so named for Visit Grove City’s Altogether Adventure brand. It was set for release at area bars and restaurants just when the pandemic hit, so Luther bottled it and turned the sales into a fundraiser for a newly formed non-profit, Project Altogether.

“We put all proceeds into a fund for neighborhood small businesses that suffered [during the shutdown].” Around $10,000 was raised, and the funds were given out confidentially to places in Grove City that needed a little help with rent or utility bills.

“I’m proud of the Grove City community, and we support it any way we can,” Luther says. “And at the brewery, we take great pride in the fact that people come in to celebrate their achievements and special days with us.”

For his involvement in the community, Luther was a 2021 Trailblazer Award Winner This award is given by Visit Grove City to the people, places, and organizations that forge a path of greatness in the community and make Grove City a great place to visit.
