Dedicated in 1843 and dubbed “The Birthplace of American Astronomy,” the Cincinnati Observatory is the oldest public observatory in the U.S.

The predecessor of its more well-known Brooklyn counterpart, the Roebling Suspension Bridge constructed in the 1860s seamlessly connects Covington, Kentucky, to Cincinnati’s vibrant Smale Riverfront Park and makes for a stunning, architectural backdrop.

Cincinnati Conservatory of Music is Founded

Cincy’s first music school, the Conservatory, later merged with the College of Music of Cincinnati to form today’s prestigious College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Music Hall is Built

A classical music venue that has hosted a vast variety of events, the Music Hall (PICTURED) was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

1930

Iconic Radio Program “Moon River” Begins Airing Long-running radio show “Moon River” combined dreamlike music and romantic poetry until 1972.

1943

King Records is Founded

A record label that did more than just record music, King Records was home to greats such as James Brown, Nina Simone and Charlie Feathers.

1945

Herzog Studio Begins Operation

Iconic recording studio

There’s one local activist, MC and music creative, her name is Siri Imani. She is one of my absolute favorites. I would dub her the mother of music in our city.

WHAT VENUES ARE YOU MOST FREQUENTING?

I’ve been going to MOTR Pub, which is more of a local space, just because that establishment alone is a huge pioneering face of live local music in our city.

AND OUTSIDE OF THE MUSIC SCENE, WHAT ELSE DO YOU REALLY ENJOY ABOUT CINCINNATI?

I really enjoy its people. I came into this trying to do my own thing and do what I knew how to do best the best way I knew how to do it. But over these five years, our community and its people have really rallied around not just myself, but the commission of CMA and where we’re headed.

Walk amongst the stars to learn about musical greats at one of the region’s newest attractions.

In July 2021, The Andrew J. Brady Music Center opened its doors in The Banks entertainment district of downtown Cincinnati. Not long after and located just outside of this new music venue, ground broke on the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame, an important development that will pay homage to the region’s rich musical history. Slated to open in July of 2023, this high-tech interactive attraction honors those with southeastern Ohio roots who have impacted funk, opera, hip-hop, gospel, R&B, rock and more beyond the reach of the region.

First founded in 2021, the Walk of Fame has been announcing inductees each year. The four initial inductees and founding

members of the landmark are Bootsy Collins, Otis Williams, the Isley Brothers and Dr. Charles Fold. The 2022 celebration brought the total stars on the Walk of Fame to eight, including iconic singer Penny Ford, techno-funk band Midnight Star, mega hip-hop producer Hi-Tek and the late legendary jazz guitarist Wilbert Longmire. The Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame officially opens July 22, 2023, at a ceremony open to the public.

The Walk of Fame is also an interactive outdoor technology park that strives to celebrate the lives of musical artists, groups, songwriters and producers who have most greatly impacted music history and their respective genres. Step through the gateway of the Walk of Fame to find 13 informational kiosks that you can connect your smartphone to. Keep on walking for a dose of musical inspiration with pulse drums, 3D sculptures, a dance floor and more augmented reality dance-fueled features.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Find more than just live music at these local venues, from open mic nights to dance parties to comedy shows. Catch a variety of live music concerts in a converted church at Southgate House Revival in Newport or at the historic Madison Theater in Covington. Many famous names have appeared in concert at Bogart’s, a Clifton neighborhood staple since 1975. In Over-the-Rhine on high-energy Main Street, find intimate shows with original artists at MOTR Pub and The Hub OTR. Be the star yourself at eclectic Northside Yacht Club’s weekly karaoke parties.

ON THE BIG STAGE

Your favorite artists are bound to make an appearance at one of Cincy’s big-stage venues. The summer months are ideal for an outdoor show at Riverbend Music Center, a 20,000-person amphitheater on the Ohio River. For both summer and winter concerts, check out MegaCorp Pavilion, one of the only dual indoor-outdoor venues in America — with a striking view of downtown Cincy from its vantage point in Newport to boot. Andrew J. Brady Music Center on The Banks attracts national acts to its multi-level indoor venue and lawn venue next door. Taft Theatre hosts concerts, comedy shows and speakers in its art deco theater, while historic Music Hall — one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks — features everything from opera to symphony orchestra to ballet and more.

ALL DAY LONG Concerts don’t have to be a one-night-only event! In July, head over to The Banks for the Cincinnati Music Festival (ABOVE), founded back in 1962, for your favorite R&B, jazz, soul and hip-hop artists. Cincy Soul: The Black Taste highlights African American entrepreneurship in the region through performance art and food, where Black-owned restaurants, caterers and food trucks come together for a foodie experience like no other. In September, the Whispering Beard Folk Festival offers a family-friendly camping and folk music experience in North Bend. For fans of rock ’n’ roll, Southgate House Revival hosts a two-night punk festival called Iron Fest each November.

Chef Jeff Harris’ Nolia Kitchen (PICTURED) has been nominated for a 2023 James Beard Award for its brilliantly executed, imaginative Southern cuisine. I played music semi-professionally and I’ve always loved the service industry for supporting artists while they find their feet. I just ended up loving it. After running a few prominent restaurants, it was time to do it for myself.

I’m very proud of the welcoming atmosphere and our food. I can only describe our mojo and cuisine as “simple, but effective.” We do quaint and personal well — it’s our ethos. Our staff is what makes this place.

I tend to visit the older restaurants and bars in our town: Maury’s Tiny Cove, Herb & Thelma’s, Zip’s, the Hilton. I love the Zoo, and the parks in Cincinnati can’t be beat.

Cincinnati means a place of great beginnings to me. When I no longer played for the Bengals, Cincinnati was the No. 1 city in America to raise a family, so I stayed.

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST GOALS FOR THE FOUNDATION YOU ESTABLISHED FOR YOUR SON, THE JOVANTE WOODS FOUNDATION?

Our goal for the Jovante Woods Foundation is to be the face of asthma research. I have plenty of events throughout the year that we would love anyone to participate in, or you can visit our website to donate and learn more.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWNERS?

My favorite place to eat is Montgomery Inn Boathouse — I love those ribs! The best place to take anyone visiting is The Banks down by the river. It is a beautiful area rampant with life, day or night. You also have to catch a Reds, Bearcats or Bengals game while in town — they have great venues and are always exciting to watch.

DO YOU STILL CELEBRATE WITH THE ICONIC ICKEY SHUFFLE?

I do the shuffle every now and again at appearances for the foundation — and big Bengals wins!

I was a little country kid! I watched a lot of things on TV, Broadway stuff. I just never thought [performing] was possible for me. Drag was really an outlet of discovery and helped me find who I authentically was with being trans.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE LIKE OUTSIDE OF PERFORMING?

Down to the core, I’m a super family-oriented person. I help take care of my mom and dad … I’m very close to my sister, my niece, my nephews and my best friends. They’re my whole world.

HOW DOES CINCINNATI’S DRAG COMMUNITY COMPARE WITH OTHER CITIES?

What I think I imprinted in the city that made it different is that we’re only the stars for the three minutes we’re onstage. When we’re offstage, I want a picture with you, with people in the audience. I want to know you guys. I always try to make sure my audience knows they’re the stars, not me. I try to make sure everybody feels equally respected and cared for.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AROUND CINCINNATI?

I drive across the Singing Bridge [Roebling Bridge] all the time, just to feel at home. There’s also George Rogers Clark Park and Devou Park in Covington. Of course, bars that support the LGBTQ+ community, the queer spaces that are safe and comfortable. Our queer spaces are so unique and different. Stop in and support Bloom, the Birdcage, Main Event and Good Judy’s.

ANY OTHER FAVORITES? I love to kayak the Little Miami River, from Otto Armleder Park, right into the Ohio River. You can leave a bike at Schmidt Recreation Complex, ride back to your car and shuttle yourself, solo, in about three hours.

Looking for a calm afternoon? The serene and suburban Summit Park (RIGHT) has an observation tower, playground, trails and four excellent restaurants, while downtown’s Smale Riverfront Park has a paved pathway, playground and swings. Eden Park is home to a museum, playhouse and conservatory; Mount Echo Park has hiking trails, playgrounds and sports facilities; and Bellevue Park has a unique pavilion designed as an outdoor dancing venue. All three provide excellent river views. At the riverside Sawyer Point you’ll find playgrounds, walking paths and a bandstand. On the Kentucky side, Licking Riverside is a walkable, tree-lined historic district. Or you can take a relaxing cruise on the waterway itself. BB Riverboats offers sightseeing cruises on historic sternwheelers while SS Tiki Tours has private pontoon boat rentals for up to 18 people.

When it’s time to get up and move, hit the lakeside trails at Sharon Woods or rent a pedal or rowboat. Winton Woods has paved fitness and nature trails while the Cincinnati Nature Center’s (LEFT) 1,800 acres are laced with 14 miles of pathways. The 1.3-mile loop in Alms Memorial Park provides great views of the river while Kentucky’s Devou Park offers the best view of the city itself. If you’d rather “spoil” a good walk (as the barb goes), you can hit Kentucky’s World of Golf. It has a full 18-hole course, as well as mini-golf, FootGolf and a driving range. If you want to hit some balls with friends, Topgolf offers food and a full bar and is conveniently located near various shopping options.

To really roll out some miles, head to the Loveland Bike Trail (RIGHT) in Little Miami Scenic State Park. Not only does the trail span 70 miles, but it also has connections to well over 100 more miles of trails, and downtown Loveland offers free parking, coffee and ice cream shops and restaurants. To extend your range, grab a Bird or a Lime E-scooter downtown or go even further with Mile 2 Mile in Newport, Kentucky, which offers hourly moto-scooter rentals. For disc golfing, head to Idlewild in Burlington, Kentucky, for a pro-level course that’s considered one of the toughest in the world. Within city limits, Mt. Airy Forest has a disc golf course among its trail-laced 1,459 acres (and a disc golf pro shop as well).

If you’re a mountain biker or paddler, the region has you covered too. A.J. Jolly Park offers kayak rentals while Harsha Lake in East Fork State Park is excellent for flatwater paddling. Miami Whitewater Forest rents rowboats, pedal boats, hydrobikes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and mini-pontoon boats for their lake. For swifter waters, you can paddle the Little Miami River with rental canoes or kayaks from a local livery. If you’re feeling ambitious, paddle the 250 miles of the new Ohio River Way, a proposed National Water Trail that runs from Portsmouth, Ohio, to West Point, Kentucky — or you can bike the adjacent paths instead. For mountain biking, check out Devou Park’s 9 miles of trails or shred the 12 miles of the England-Idlewild Trail System.

At this level, it’s time to fly. Ozone Zipline Adventures has a six-line tour that crosses the Little Miami River. For tours of up to 19 zip lines, as well as an aerial course and free fall tower, head to Screaming Raptor Zip Lines. Defy Florence’s indoor zip line complements its trampolines, parkour area, trapeze, aerial silks and more. Sports Plus Cincinnati offers two ice hockey rinks, figure skating, broomball, open skating and sled hockey while Full Throttle Adrenaline Park has go-karting, paintball, minibikes, a “rage room” and more. Named after the New York City neighborhood, Coney Island waterpark includes a massive 2-acre Sunlite Pool. Just north of the city, Kings Island (LEFT) is 364 acres with eight themed areas and more than 100 rides, attractions and shows to get your heart pumping.

Home of perhaps the world’s most famous hippo, Fiona, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the second oldest in the nation (and its Reptile House is the oldest zoo building in the country). It is known for its innovative birthing programs with a variety of species — a program so successful that Fiona now has a baby brother named Fritz via collective vote by fans. There’s even a page on their website dedicated to new births, including Rozi (TOP RIGHT), a cheetah cub born in 2022.

Zoo favorites include the collection of exotic felines (which ranges from tigers and snow leopards to sand cats), manatees, penguins and, of course, Fiona’s entire hippo family. You can explore 21 habitats, including Elephant Reserve, Gorilla World, Lemur Lookout, Roo Valley, Wolf Woods and World of the Insect.

Beyond meeting animal friends, there’s an electric train to ride around the grounds, a carousel, an aerial adventure course and a variety of dining options, including a beer garden with local brews.

Learn about the courageous people who escaped slavery and explore the ongoing fight for inclusive freedom through films, exhibits and hands-on activities. Outside the museum, learning continues on the Clermont County Freedom Trail — a self-guided mobile tour that will take you to stops on the Underground Railroad, homes of abolitionists and sites like the Harriet Beecher Stowe House (PICTURED). The historic home honors the local roots and lasting impact of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Smale Riverfront Park’s Black Brigade Monument commemorates 718 African American men who volunteered to build barricades in Northern Kentucky to protect Cincinnati from the Confederates despite the fact that initially there was an attempt to force them into enlisting. After gaining a deeper understanding, you can celebrate Black heritage and culture by admiring local music legends at the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame set to open this year in July.

Millennia of Faith

The Skirball Museum zooms in to the local Jewish community and zooms out to view Judaism around the world. The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, located in Union Terminal, focuses on “Education that Inspires Action.” Plum Street Temple (BELOW), a key synagogue in American history, features an intricate rose window and beautiful arched entrances to ogle. The Chestnut St. Cemetery was the first Jewish burial ground west of the Allegheny Mountains — a tiny plot of land with a large historic footprint. Celebrate Jewish art, food and culture at the annual ish Festival.

What’s on tap in OTR?

A whole host of local breweries — some in buildings that have been filling pints since pre-prohibition — form the OTR Brewery District. Downtown Cincy transforms into a German village for Oktoberfest Zinzinnati (ABOVE), a lively weekend of drinking, eating and dancing. Learn about the German immigrants who brought their culture to the area at the German Heritage Museum.

At first glance, you might not suspect Cincy’s Race Street once echoed with Hank William’s baritone, but from 1945 to 1955, Herzog Studio recorded artists like Williams, Bull Moose Jackson and Patti Page. Look for the historical marker outside 811 Race St. The Evanston neighborhood also boasts a historic soundtrack. King Records recorded everything from Appalachian folk to jazz to the funk-tastic tracks of James Brown.

IF YOU WERE IN CHARGE OF A WALKING TOUR IN CINCY, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

I’d include the historic Findlay Market, which is the oldest public market in Ohio. It’s been here since 1855. I’d also take people to Fountain Square, the core of the city. The Tyler Davidson Fountain is really beautiful. Davidson’s brother-in-law commissioned the statue to honor his late business partner. It symbolizes the importance of water — their hardware business catered to people coming down the Ohio River to live and work in this area.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY FAMOUS CINCINNATIAN, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHERE WOULD YOU EAT?

I’d choose William Howard Taft, the only man to serve as both the president of the U.S. and the 10th chief justice of the Supreme Court. And this is sort of silly, but I’d take him to Taft’s Ale House, a local brewery in an old church that pays homage to him, our 27th president.

Birria tacos. Guti fries. Plantains. Adobada tacos. What’s not to love? Under the direction of Sergio Gutierrez, OLLA Taqueria Gutierrez is a casual restaurant in Covington featuring authentic Mexican street food. Translated to English, “olla” means “cooking pot” or “saucepan” — appropriate given the expertly developed flavors you’ll find on the menu.

The Hub, a popular bar, event and music venue in Over-the-Rhine, will have a new home this year, with plans to move just one door down to 1215 Main St. This new spot, formerly a Baptist Church, is a fitting setting for the enthusiastic and lively shows that regularly take place there. Bar owner Lindsey Swadner is excited to have more space, plus separate rooms, a larger billiards area and a back patio.

Co-owners Kristen Kreft and Mayalou Banatwala have successfully established their brand and company, Rocktails, as a bar consulting and event coordinating business. The music industry and mixology delightfully collide for these two who create books, cocktail infusion kits, stickers and more. Look for their products at Toko Baru, Kismet OTR, Originalitees, and Roebling Point Books and Coffee.

Mama’s on Main, a traditional Italian restaurant that opened in 2022, can hardly keep the pasta bowl full because of high demand. The eatery keeps its tight menu packed with classics (think cacio e pepe and arancini with romesco), thanks to the leadership of experienced restaurateurs Emily Wolff and Paul Weckman. Their impressive and versatile portfolio of restaurants plays a huge part in making Covington’s expansive foodie scene a destination. That includes margaritas and tacos at the Frida Kahlo-inspired Frida 602, upscale southern fare perfected at Otto’s, cold beer and hot dogs with all the fixins at Larry’s dive bar and craft cocktails served in an old converted auto garage at The Standard.

In Cincy, entrepreneurs, local artists and innovative thinkers are threads in the interwoven tapestry of the region’s creative community. Get to know a few of the faces behind the work.

Some visual artists choose canvas or marble. Mreeuh Chang chooses skin. Chang transcribes original, custom and more standard designs at Matter Botattica, a fine art gallery and tattoo studio. In this one-woman shop, powerful and inspired designs abound.

It started with a wooden sign that two sisters made for their parents in 2013. Since then, artistic abilities and business sense have guided Melyssa Kirn and Michele Tibbs to expand their venture of creating wood-centric, one-of-a-kind creations. Two retail stores, Grainwell Boutique Covington and Grainwell Boutique Hyde Park, offer framed items, coasters and more.

There is no question that Cincy is a music scene hotbed. But it takes more than just being a guitar shredder to make it big. Executive Director Kick Lee at the Cincinnati Music Accelerator (CMA) assists both emerging and experienced musicians with networking, workshops, production methods and more — whatever it takes to get musicians on stage and their music to the public.

Combine social activism, poetry, hip hop and soul, plus a love for Cincy, and who do you have? Siri Imani, a multi-talented performer, peace promoter and philanthropist. Imani’s foundation, Triiibe, hosts potlucks and book clubs and most recently opened an urban garden. All events are geared to fostering expression and understanding. Additionally, in 2022, Imani Productions booked more than 300 local artists, including DJs and musicians, giving them a paycheck and recognition. Keep an eye out for Imani’s new album, Big Fish, which dropped early this year.

Under the direction of owner and entrepreneur Means Cameron, BlaCk Coffee Lounge and BlaCk OWned Outerwear are businesses that have made a name for themselves both locally and nationally. Coffee, culture and companionship are staples at the coffee shop, while the clothing brand is a favorite of renowned musicians and athletes — including Joe Burrow.

As a civic organizer and co-founder of COVunity Fridge, Missy Spears’ social responsibility and business sense serve her community well. She’s seen with her own eyes how Covington business owners contribute to their community in more ways than by just running a business. “Because of that immersion,” Spears explains, “we have managed to grow our city through one-of-a-kind small businesses that have built a culture of support and collaboration.” And the results show. “This has made our local scene more creative, authentic, tasty, artistic and community/resident driven,” says Spears.

Equal parts savvy and down-to-earth, Ricardo Grant founded Paloozanoire as a way to enrich the lives of people of color through creativity, corporate leadership and entrepreneurship. The org celebrates with a Juneteenth Block Party and its Black & Brown Faces art show that welcomes all.

Celebrate autumn harvest in the Year of the Rabbit at the Cincinnati Moon Festival (BELOW), an annual gala held in Fountain Square. Try a traditional Chinese mooncake pastry symbolizing harmony, take in a performance and see a twinkling display of bright lanterns on Sept. 30.

Since the very first parade in 1973, Cincinnati Pride in June has grown steadily every year to include a full month of entertainment, educational programs, food and fun, led by organizations such as Cincinnati Pride, Cincinnati Black Pride and NKY Pride. Celebrate Pride this year on June 4 in Covington and on June 24 in downtown Cincinnati.

Unity and community reign at the Juneteenth Block Party, a family-friendly celebration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. Enjoy the arts, meet local business owners and take in plenty of music, food and dancing, plus a fireworks display on June 17.

The sights, sounds and tastes of Latin America come alive during Cincy Sabroso, a month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. From Sept. 15–Oct. 15, catch exclusive deals and offerings from participating Latino-owned small businesses ranging from Argentinian to Venezuelan across the Cincy Region.

Sample a world of flavors from Japan, India, Thailand and more at the popular Asian Food Fest, April 29–30. Try something new with small plate offerings ranging in price from $2–10 and keep an eye out for the “Secret Menu” booth to find imaginative off-menu dishes available only at the fest.

Now in its 35th year, the four-day Black Family Reunion festival highlights Black-owned businesses and features family-friendly fare, including concerts, a parade and spiritual services, and encourages community involvement through activities like voter registration and a job fair. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CINCINNATI?

I was born in Mexico, transferred to Cincinnati through my job at Procter & Gamble 34 years ago, and have been president of the Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati for 18 years. I have three kids and four grandchildren here. There’s a high quality of life here — with arts, festivals, sports and so many activities.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS WITH THE CHAMBER?

We’re the largest Hispanic chamber in the tri-state area and we’re heavily involved in the community. We’ve built trust as good partners. Our events, like the Cincy-Cinco Latino Festival in May, draw more people to Latino-owned businesses every year. It’s also the 15th anniversary of Salsa on the Square, a free weekly event from May to September with music and dance lessons, which draws 300 to 400 people each week. We also have a great new website for Cincy Sabroso (hispanicchambercincinnati.com/ cincysabroso) that lists 200 Latino-owned restaurants by area and cuisine.
