The Myall Coast stretches from the twin towns of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest through the Myall Lakes National Park to Seal Rocks. This piece of coast is truly unique and home to vast tracts of wilderness 10 ‹ summer in the lakes

Lighthouse Beach at Seal Rocks

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest lie at the mouth of the Myall River and reflect a relaxed coastal lifestyle with a sense of peace and tranquillity.

From here you can journey into the Myall Lakes National Park which is a spectacular blend of lakes, coastal forests, pristine beaches and a huge sand dune system. The National Park is internationally recognised for its wetland ecology and home to hundreds of species of birds.

Off shore is Broughton Island, with white sandy beaches, volcanic peaks and wind~swept vegetation. It has some of the best diving and snorkelling sites in NSW and a vast array of wildlife including penguins, turtles and seabirds.

IT’S HONEST

Beyond the coast lies a lush green region rich in history, agriculture and country atmosphere

The townships of Stroud, Bulahdelah, Wootton, Coolongolook and Nabiac reflect the personality of the Great Lakes hinterland.

Cafés, eco~retreats, boutique wineries, country markets and fascinating flora and fauna combine with rolling green fields, farm gates and forests of flooded gums.

Further, into the hinterland, along Thunderbolts Way, is the historical township of Stroud. There are over 30 heritage buildings ~ it is an irresistible mix of country charm, modern café culture and Australian history. Take some time to admire the view and historic cannons from Silo Hill.

Nestled on the banks of the Myall River, at the foot of Alum Mountain is Bulahdelah ~ the gateway to the Myall Lakes. Right in the heart of the Great Lakes this town has a variety of experiences on offer including the tallest tree in NSW.

The Great Lakes hinterland is a landscape full of natural treasures, secret spots, fresh farm produce and country hospitality.

2. Swim between the red & yellow flags.

3. Read the safety signs.

4. Ask a lifeguard for safety advice.

5. Swim with a friend.

6. If you need help, stay calm & attract attention by raising your arm, float & wait for assistance.

7. Supervise children at all times.

8. Protect yourself from the sun. Cover up, use sunscreen, wear a hat & sunglasses.

rip currents

Rip currents are the number 1 hazard on Australian beaches & can often lead to drowning when swimmers attempt to fight the current trying to swim directly back to the shoreline, become exhausted & begin to panic.

 



• At patrolled beaches stay calm, float & wave your arm above your head for a lifeguard or surfer to come & help.

Floating & conserving energy is important until help arrives.

Seven Mile Beach

• If you have a board STAY WITH IT & raise your arm to attract attention.

• Only strong swimmers should swim at an angle across the rip.

• If you are an inexperienced swimmer you may escape the rip by swimming parallel to the beach towards breaking waves.

• R egularly assess your situation. If your response is ineffective, stay calm, you may need to adopt an alternative approach.

• N ever attempt to swim directly against the rip it is a quick way to exhaustion.

OPEN WATER DOMINATE THE LANDSCAPE AND INFLUENCE THEIR SURROUNDINGS. THE THREE ‘GREAT’ LAKES ~ MYALL, SMITHS AND WALLIS ~ EACH HAVE THEIR OWN PERSONALITY.

Wallis Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Australia; boasting crystal clear waters year round and is home to a rich seafood harvest including the famous Wallis Lake oyster. It is a haven for anybody that loves the water and hugely popular for fishing, boating, swimming and waterskiing.

Smiths Lake is smallest of the great lakes located mid way between Myall and Wallis Lakes. The lake offers warm calm waters, dotted with islands and bounded by National Park and the township

of Smiths Lake. The lake is separated from the ocean by an impressive sandbar formation on Cellito Beach.

The Myall Lakes are RAMSAR listed as a wetland of international significance. It has four parts covering an area triple that of Sydney Harbour. An incredible 280 bird species call the lake home, which is more than Kakadu.

The lake is lined with campsites, fishing spots, tracks and trails, history and home to some of the best experiences in the Great Lakes.

You are invited to explore our National Parks. Covering more than half of the entire region these green spaces are a part of The Great Lakes way of life View with Layar Get back to nature in our National Parks

This Park protects a narrow strip of coastal land with one of the state’s largest stands of littoral rainforest. Bordered by Wallis Lake in the west and the Pacific in the east, the Park connects Pacific Palms to Forster and is ideal for those who like water sports and nature-based activities. There are lookouts, lakeside and cliff top trails, beaches and the Green Cathedral – an out door consecrated church. The park has some great trekking and mountain bike trails as well.

This Park is blessed with deep green forests, endless trails and tracks and the highest lookout point in the Great Lakes. Whoota lookout provides magnificent views. The Wallingat National Park contains Eucalypt forests supporting a number of threatened plant and animal species. Things to do & see include canoeing, bushwalking, bird watching, photography, mountain biking and scenic driving.

The beautiful and remote Myall Lakes National Park offers countless opportunities for adventures, nature based escapes and exploring. The park boasts more than 40kms of beaches, forests, rugged escarpments, endless tracks and trails and spectacular Broughton Island. The centre piece of the park is the lakes system which is one of the state’s largest coastal lake systems and a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance.

Memorial Park, Point Rd

This 80km drive winds its way beside the Wallis, Smiths and Myall Lakes taking you through Pacific Palms, National Parks and past the turn off for Seal Rocks, Coomba and Hallidays Point. The scenery is spectacular and there are numerous photo stops, picnics areas and unique locations. The Lakesway is also the only access road for Forster Tuncurry. Give yourself a day, whether heading north or south this drive will leave you with some great summer memories.

THE PLACES AND SPACES OF THE GREAT LAKES ARE CONNECTED BY SCENIC DRIVES. THE MYALL WAY WILL TAKE YOU RIGHT THROUGH THE HEART OF THE MYALL COAST, LAKES WAY CAPTURES ALL OUR LAKES AND WOOTTON WAY AND THUNDERBOLTS WAY ARE PART OF THE HINTERLAND NETWORK TAKING YOU TO HIDDEN CAFÉS. WHETHER YOU NEED TO FILL HALF A DAY OR MORE THERE IS A DRIVE

If you want to explore the heart of the Myall Coast then this is the drive for you. Starting at either Bulahdelah or Tea Gardens this stretch of road passes through the Myall Lakes National Park with plenty of spots along the way to explore. From the public art and coffee shops of Tea Gardens, to the peaceful waters of Jimmy’s Beach, to giant sand dunes at Dark Point and the rainforest walk at Mungo Brush this drive will get you back to nature. There is a car ferry crossing at Bombah Point followed by 5km of unsealed graded road before reaching the hinterland town of Bulahdelah.

bucketts way ~ hinterland explorer The Bucketts Way loops out from the Pacific Highway south of Karuah and rejoins the highway in Taree.

This winding country road travels right through the heart of the Great Lakes hinterland, through Stroud, past Gloucester and into the Manning Valley. There is no better way to experience our hinterland. You can start this drive from Bulahdelah taking Booral Rd or from Nabiac heading towards Krambach.

4WD The Great Lakes has forest tracks and long stretches of beach perfect for 4WD exploring. Pack your fishing rod for some great fishing, or a packed lunch to enjoy at the top of the mountain.

NABIAC Nestled on the banks of the Wallamba River Nabiac has a unique mix of quirky, retro shops, cafés and Australia’s largest motorcycle museum.

MYALL LAKES NATIONAL PARK Huge sand dunes as far as the eye can see.

These shifting sands hide old fishing shacks and are great for sand surfing.

THE GRANDIS

BOOTI BOOTI NATIONAL PARK A short climb to the top will take you to the tower that offers 360* views taking in the Pacific Ocean, Wallis Lake, Pacific Palms and beyond. The view is equally good at night with lights dancing off the water and the twin towns shining

SUGARLOAF POINT LIGHTHOUSE SEAL ROCKS You will not be disappointed with the most eastern point of the Great Lakes. The lighthouse at Seal Rocks is an historic site nestled amongst rugged coastal forests.

Before that is a beautiful piece of littoral rainforest. The beach itself is remote and is backed by Smiths Lake.

WALKS THERE ARE INCREDIBLE VIEWS OF VAST AND VARIED LANDSCAPES. DRAMATIC COASTS TO DEEP GREEN FORESTS TO PATCHWORK FIELDS THAT BLANKET ROLLING HINTERLAND HILLS.

the pebbly beach bicentennial walk START: “The Bullring” Ocean Baths, Forster Main Beach, North St. DISTANCE: 10km (loop) TIME: 2-3hrs GRADE: Easy/medium This walk commences off North St, near the ocean baths of Forster Beach. It leads eastwards over Second Head along the foreshore, between Bennetts Head Rd and the ocean, past The Tanks, through Bennetts Head Reserve from where you may be able to see whales in winter and dolphins all year round and south past One Mile Beach to Burgess Beach.

Return the same way. This walk can be split into two or three separate sections if preferred.

stroud heritage walk

Bucketts Way

START: Ruins Campground, The Lakes Way, Pacific Palms DISTANCE: 6.5km (loop) TIME: 3hrs GRADE: Medium/hard This walk touches the Pacific Ocean & shores of Wallis Lake, with beautiful views from the headland and plenty of wildlife. Travel clockwise out to the stunning Seven Mile Beach & look for the signposted track ~ this climbs up the northern side of Booti Hill. The track emerges onto the ridge~crest above Lindemans Cove & joins a fire trail. Go straight ahead for Elizabeth Beach. Back on the main walking track cross The Lakes Way for a change of pace. The final 3.5km of the loop follows the shore of Wallis Lake.

Art installations are located in a trail along the waterfront at Marine Drive, with a few over in Hawks Nest. These art works have been donated by local artists and vary from murals, sculptures & mosaics and all have relevance to the local environment & community. Start the trail at the Tea Gardens Library in Marine Drive. Continue along Marine Drive towards the bridge, cross the bridge to Hawks Nest to Moira Parade and up to the Community Hall. You may also like to browse the wonderful selection of local art works which are displayed in businesses within Tea Gardens.

Stroud Court House, St Johns Anglican Church, Quambi House and Silo Hill Lookout are four spots on the Stroud Heritage Walk that shouldn’t be missed. Silo Hill takes in the beauty of the rolling green hillside that surrounds Stroud & is also home to the Cannons of the Crimean War Vintage. Stroud has one of the finest collections of convict constructions in Australia. The churchyard of St. Johns has many historic graves & the church holds many plaques well worth inspection.
