Splurging.

Treating Yourself.

A Moment of Indulgence.

Me Time. We call it many different things, but many of those titles tend to diminish the importance and healthy aspects of setting aside ample time to engage in self-care. For many women, personal wants and needs take a backseat much of the time as heavy emphasis is awarded to the needs and demands of a career and family members. There’s nothing wrong with that. A woman with drive and determination to excel and advance in her profession sometimes needs to forgo personal aspects in her life to achieve her goals and ambitions. Likewise, a woman who is raising a family knows that there are going to be plenty of instances when children require a singular and all-consuming focus as part of the nurturing process that goes into raising them to be contributing members of society. However, the fact of the matter is that the cost of ignoring personal attention on yourself can come at the expense of your career and family. Neglecting to take some time removes a crucial defense against stress and burnout, which is a self-defeating measure. In an article in Psychology Today on the importance of prioritizing yourself, Dr. Lisa Firestone noted when we feel drained, we have nothing left of ourselves to give to others.

ourselves,” Firestone said “Otherwise, we may be going through the motions, but not engaging in a way in which everyone benefits — i.e., our kids feel nurtured, our job feels rewarding, our partner feels seen and our friend feels cared about.” Conversely, we can deplete others when our needs are not being met, Firestone added, noting that children who see their parents as people who are fulfilled in themselves can benefit from both the devotion from the parents as well as the example set by them. “This is true in all of our relationships,” she wrote. “If we don’t practice self-care and find healthy ways to meet our needs as individuals, we tend to have less energy, complain more, drag our feet, feel more resentment, and criticize ourselves and others, all of which can be draining to all the people we are seeking to benefit by setting aside our own wants and needs.” Treating yourself, splurging, basking in a moment of indulgence or taking some me time: It doesn’t matter what you want to call it. The important thing is that you do it guilt-free. ■

MANNERS FOR THE MODERN-DAY WOMAN BY TEECE ARONIN

PHYLLIS’ GUIDE TO CORRECT LIVING This time every year I am inundated with questions concerning holiday thank-you notes.

been joyous for you and that the year ahead brings nothing but happiness!

Dear reader:

One should always do one’s best to send a note within one week of receiving a holiday gift. However, when one considers the busyness of the holidays, what with Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, St. Lucy’s Day and Boxing Day all being winter holidays, two weeks is permissible.

It’s not complicated, and you’ll be pleased to know that you needn’t write a note to everyone who gives you a gift. Here, dear hearts, are Phyllis’ rules for holiday thank-you note etiquette. There is no need to write a note if the gift was given in person and you have verbally thanked the giver. Do write a note, however, if you are not able to thank the giver personally. This also is important for letting the person know you received the gift. Having to write a note has its bright side as it means one less holiday reveler you were forced to make merry with at a party where everyone is making too much noise and someone just spilled something that smells like nutmeg all over your dress.

In addition, one should always send a thank-you note within one to two weeks after attending a dinner party.

The note can be something simple such as:

Another question I hear is whether emails are appropriate in lieu of handwritten notes. No, no they are not, though there are some who will tell you otherwise. I will say this about that: An email is better than no reply at all. If you’ve broken both hands in a gift-opening accident but can tap out an email with your elbow, an email is better than nothing – but not much.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift! What a unique present: personalized socks with your cat’s picture on them! Now I can feel close to little Rumpum even when I can’t be there getting scratched and bitten by him as I was last spring. I hope the holidays have

So, there you have it, my friends: Everything you need to know about holiday thank-you notes. May you receive many gifts this year in boxes, in gift bags and, best of all, in the hearts of those who love you!

Appropriately yours,

Phyllis

STYLE

BY ERIN HAGEN

WINTER 2020 FASHION IS A BLAST FROM THE PAST I am excited to share winter 2020 fashion trends because they pull from many areas of inspiration and they all work together wonderfully. I find all of the metallic gold pieces endearing. My grandmother, who is one of my fashion inspirations, was born in Texas and spent the majority of her life in Oklahoma, and she loved gold lamé. She would carry huge gold purses and wear big gold earrings, metallic gold blouses and shoes. It was always a brilliant pop of color that went with anything. She was quiet in nature and soft-spoken, so I like to think her audacious pops of gold were her rebellious and courageous side. If you choose to embrace the gold metallic trend you could make a statement without having to say a word. Puffer jackets are easy and need no introduction here. They are everywhere for winter 2020. I love a trend that is already in my closet. This is such a practical and purposeful accessory when you live in the great white north. My puffer is so warm on some days I can wear it with jeans and a T-shirt and some sneaks, then on days where it is colder it works with a giant sweater too. Who knew one of my favorite winter items would be such a hit this year? If you are like me, who enjoys hanging onto my favorite items through the decades, knowing that they will once again rise to the season, you will love that shoulder pads are back. This is a signature look from the ʼ80s and they add structure and architecture to any outfit. The 2020 version of this could be a white T-shirt with a denim skirt or in a sequined fitted dress; either way, you will be hip to be square. Houndstooth is another trend that is getting a resurgence. The geometric pattern is androgynous and can be worn many different ways, including on printed tights, which are perfect under a long solid-color maxi dress, with some short, chunky black boots. This past summer while on vacation in Italy I loved seeing women in dresses. So even in Michigan, as the temperatures drop and the snow falls, these fun tights give us a chance to wear dresses without freezing. So, grab a pair of great boots, printed tights and that dress will be perfect for the office or a night out with friends, just like those Europeans! I hope you enjoy these picks as much as I do, always remember the key to great style is to wear what makes you feel great and works for you. ■ Erin Hagen graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She became a personal shopper and stylist in 2016 and is also a buyer. Hagen lives in East Lansing with her husband and three children.

HOW TO FIND MORE TIME TO READ If you’re among the masses resolving to spend the year ahead reading more than you have in the past, consider these tips to find more time to cuddle up with a good book. For many people, few activities are more enjoyable than nestling up with a good book. But even the most devoted bookworms sometimes have trouble finding time to read. In a 2017 survey conducted by the market research firm YouGov that focused on trends regarding New Year’s resolutions, 18% of respondents indicated they were committed to reading more books in 2018. That’s a lofty goal, and one that can do more than just provide readers with some daily escapism. Studies have shown that reading can develop neural networks in the brain that can help readers understand more complex thought. In addition, a 2013 study led by neuropsychologist and researcher Robert Wilson found that a mentally active lifestyle may make it less likely that the presence of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease will impair mental functioning. So picking up a good book and finding time to read may protect readers from some of the neurological issues associated with aging. If you’re among the masses resolving to spend the year ahead reading more than you have in the past, consider these tips to find more time to cuddle up with a good book.

Turn off your devices. Think of how much time you now spend each day fiddling with your devices. If you’re a parent, the statistics might surprise you. A 2017 survey from Common Sense Media found that parents of children between the ages of 8 and 18 spend an average of nine hours and 22 minutes each day in front of various screens (e.g., smartphones, tablets, televisions, etc.). While not all of that is downtime, chances are a good portion of it is. Whether you’re a parent or not, turning off your devices is perhaps the single most effective way to find more time to read.

Read first thing in the morning. A recent survey from the global market research firm IDC found that 80% of smartphone users check their mobile devices within 15 minutes of waking up in the morning. Instead of scrambling to read your alerts or overnight messages when you get out of bed, spend the first 10 or 15 minutes after waking up immersing yourself in a good book. ■

Schedule time to read. Clear your schedule to read much like you might do to watch a favorite television show. Both books and television are forms of entertainment, so why clear time for one form of escapism but not the other? Turn books into travel buddies. Carry a book with you whenever you leave the house, whether you’re going to a doctor’s appointment or to get work done on your car or even to go to work. Time spent in waiting rooms or commuting via mass transit provide perfect opportunities to read books.

DEAR KERRY BY KERRY HART

DEAR KERRY, One of my goals for the new year was to learn to better organize my life so that I take some time for me. I need to make friends and also feel better about myself. But as a mom of three kids and a wife, I’m feeling a lot of guilt. How do I stay connected with my partner and my kids, and still give myself a break once in awhile? Societal pressures can make women feel as though they are expected to have it all together. You need to understand that you must take care of yourself first in order to best take care of others. In addition to getting your regular water intake daily, be sure to eat a healthy, wellbalanced diet and sleep when you can. This will give you the energy to keep up with your kids and get through the day. Take care of your general health by seeing a therapist regularly as well as your entire medical care team to make sure your body is running just how it should. Get organized by keeping a family calendar. One on the wall for the

Karen D. in Mason

entire family to see and one in your phone for just yourself and your partner. This will help with planning for child care, pickups, drop-offs and conflicting schedules. Once all the scheduling is set, make sure to set some time for yourself and with your partner. This added organization will help you be more present in the moment, be it with your partner or at your kids’ sporting event, because you know the logistics of your life have been worked out. Plan date nights to nurture your couple relationship. Sometimes getting out of the house is the best medicine, so get yourself a babysitter you trust and get out of the house at least once a month. Date nights at

home at least once a week are a musthave as well. Pick an activity once the kids are in bed like watching a TV show, playing a game or even having a happy hour all your own to connect with your partner on a weekly basis so you can spend some quality time together. Join a parenting group to increase socialization for yourself and your kids. Some groups focus on play dates like a moms’ group, others on education like a local forest school or a field trip group. Get on the internet and find the right group for you to get you and your kids out of the house and to enrich your days by being around other moms with similar interests.

Feed your own personal interests so you do not lose yourself in parenthood. Join a workout class, running group or a local gym if being healthy fuels your soul. Find local interest clubs like book clubs, knitting groups or scrapbooking meetings to get yourself out of the house, on your own and enjoying something that is just for you. ■ Kerry Hart is a couple and family therapist with a private practice in East Lansing. The only thing she loves more than saving relationships is writing about them. See more of her musings at kerryhartcounseling.com.

FASTING FOR WEIGHT LOSS

AND BETTER HEALTH COURTESTY OF MCC

INTERMITTENT FASTING PLANS ARE AMONG TODAY’S MOST POPULAR DIETS. Interest in intermittent fasting is growing, and experts offer varying opinions about the best and safest ways to make the most of this diet strategy. Fasting comes in various forms. With the 5:2 fast, for example, individuals follow a traditional diet for five days of the week. The remaining two days are fast days. Those fast days allow only water as sustenance, but often include caloric intake that does not exceed 500 to 600 calories. Alternate-day fasting is another option, with one day of having normal caloric intake, followed by the next with the 500-calorie limit; rinse and repeat. Other fasting plans involve timed eating. With the 16:8 diet, people eat whatever they like within a predetermined window of time, typically between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They then fast for the remaining 16. A study published in the journal Nutrition and Health Aging and led by Krista Varady, an associate professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago, found the 16:8 diet a successful way for obese individuals to lose weight. The study also found that this diet helped to lower blood pressure in participating individuals. On average, when compared with the control trial, those on the 16:8 diet consumed 350 fewer calories and lost 3% of their weight. In addition, their blood pressure dropped by an average of 7 millimeters of mercury over the length of the study. In addition to weight loss and improved blood chemistry metrics, fasting may also improve longevity, suggest researchers. An ongoing study by the National Institute on Aging conducted on rhesus monkeys, which share 93% of their genetic makeup with humans, found calorie-restriction diets helped certain monkeys live anywhere from 14 to 17 years longer in captivity. Restricting calories may activate genes that direct cells to preserve resources and stall out instead of grow. In this state, the cells are resistant to stress and illness. It can take some time for people to find a fasting plan that works for them. Before the body becomes acclimated to fasting, headaches, hunger pangs, low energy and mood swings may occur. Eating high-fiber foods can help a person feel fuller longer. Consuming plenty of water also can help. Always consult with a doctor before beginning a new diet regimen. â–

ROBINWOOD LANDING MARIE LYNN WIELAND

“We honestly noticed Mom seemed off at Christmas. She’s lost weight, she was more withdrawn, had a hard time following our conversations, and I swear when my daughter walked in, she didn’t recognize her. It truly was alarming to all of us. If I dug deeper there was likely more that I wasn’t seeing. I’m eight hours away, my sister still works full time and Dad passed away just six months ago. Things have changed so much. I know her doctors recommended we think about placement, such a scary word. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago, but it seemed so surreal. She has neighbors that stop by but, ultimately, she’s alone. I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to her, but what right do I have to tell her she shouldn’t be at home alone? She truly deserves more than this and it’s my responsibility as her daughter to figure that out.” As the administrator of Lansing’s only specialized Alzheimer’s care center this scenario is all too familiar. Families come to us daily seeking resources for their loved ones but feeling conflicted on what’s right. How do I love my mother, father, wife, husband, yet assure that they receive the care that is so needed when diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other like dementias? At Robinwood Landing we believe that care is much more than the motions provided through assistance with activities of daily living and passing of medications. Care comes in the form of relationships we build with our residents and families in each interaction, or as we call them Meaningful Moments. While our residents may be in an ever-changing state of cognition, one common thread remains: sense of purpose. How can those living with these diseases feel this sense while their families trust they are receiving the highest quality of care? We believe this is felt the very minute you walk in the front door at Robinwood Landing and invite you to come see for yourself. ■

Marie Lynn has been the administrator at Robinwood Landing since May 2018 and is a true advocate for those living with dementia. Her many years of experience in senior health and wellness bring a depth of commitment to her work that invigorates our team. Her husband, Troy, and three children, Brady, Morgan and Molly, serve as her sense of purpose. Also, let’s not forget…GO GREEN!!

SMILE YOUR HEART OUT IN 2020 DR. SUSAN MAPLES, DDS

In keeping with the new year’s theme of our own Capital Area Women’s LifeStyle Magazine: Go Ahead and Love Yourself in 2020, let’s talk about YOU … finally attaining the smile of your dreams. If you’ve ever longed to have an extraordinary smile, one that gives you personal confidence and connectedness, let this be the year you make that a reality! One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is giving someone the personal, social and psychological boost of an ear-to-ear smile he or she can be proud to flash. My experience is many adults want it, but few really know what’s possible or how easy (or sometimes challenging) it might be to create the smile of their dreams. During a smile consult, when I take a photo series and help patients see (and dialogue about) their smile from several different perspectives, it’s more common that the solution they seek is well within their reach. They are instantly relieved and excited. Perception is reality! Sporting a pretty smile, as judged by you, the beholder, means you

automatically smile more. That’s a huge health bonus in itself. Most of us think we smile when we are happy. But here’s a mind-blowing fact: Research shows us, time and time again, that it works more so in reverse. Merely activating our smile muscles releases dopamine and serotonin, brain neurotransmitters that induce pleasure and happiness. Next, there is the power of attraction. A genuine smile attracts others to your heart. As humans we are subconsciously attracted to smilers. Smiling is a universal expression of happiness and friendliness. We are hardwired to gravitate toward a person with a genuine smile. We trust smilers to have good intentions.

When I build this list, most people get intimidated — they assume they can’t afford it. You might be surprised. My own insecurity begs that I continually ask my previously smile-enhanced patients, those who have spent their time and hardearned dollars to boost their smile-ability … “Was it worth it?” The good news … I’ve only heard “Yes!” as a response. In fact, I often hear, “I wish I had done it years before!” Here it is, a new year … the year of clarity and “2020 vision.” It might just be time to consider a smile enhancement as part of the person you’re meant to be! ■

5TO IMPROVE SELF-CARE TIPS YOUR WELL-BEING COURTESY OF FAMILY FEATURES

Between hectic schedules, ever-growing to-do lists and caring for others, it can be easy to put self-care on the back burner.

— and the right mattress can be key to ensuring your bedroom is the sleep oasis you need for quality rest. If you need help when it comes to selecting a mattress, the experts at a retailer like Mattress Firm can help you find the right mattress based on your sleep position or aches and pains from a wide selection of mattress sizes, features and accessories that won’t break the bank.

Committing to a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, reducing stress, exercising regularly and unplugging from your devices can help keep you healthy, both mentally and physically. Nourish Yourself While eating well may seem like an obvious self-care tip, it’s not always easy to change your eating habits or replace fast food and sweet indulgences with healthier options. However, properly nourishing your body with the right foods, like fish, leafy green vegetables and berries, can help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk for diseases such as diabetes, improve your memory and reduce inflammation, among other shortand long-term benefits. Get a Good Night’s Rest Getting a proper night’s sleep — most experts recommend seven to nine hours for the average adult — can have a positive impact on how you feel both mentally and physically. Having both the proper routine — limiting caffeine and sugar intake before bed and reducing distractions such as TV or smartphones

Finding a quiet place to relax and practice meditation or yoga can help you reduce stress and anxiety, become more self-aware and create a sense of calmness during even the busiest of days. Practice Relaxation Techniques Whether you have a few spare minutes or an entire afternoon of free time, finding a quiet place to relax and practice meditation or yoga can help you reduce stress and anxiety, become more self-aware and create a sense of calmness during even the busiest of days. Try setting up a secluded area in your home (or office) where you can concentrate on your practice and really listen to yourself.

Unplug and Unwind With 24/7 access to the internet, social media and television, it can be easy to create bad habits associated with the always-connected, smartphone-obsessed world. However, screens – and the blue light they emit – have been proven to negatively impact sleep and mental performance. Setting aside some time – aim for a couple hours in succession – each day to unplug from your devices and their distractions can lead to better sleep, productivity, emotional wellness and creativity. Make Sure to Move While it’s important to take care of yourself mentally, taking care of your body can be just as important to provide peace of mind. Finding time each day to get in at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, whether it’s a full-blown workout, a walk around the neighborhood with your dog or a bike ride to a favorite destination, can boost your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and help keep your waistline trim. Find a regimen that works for you, be it multiple short active periods or one long gym session, and make it part of your daily routine for an easy way to boost both your physical and mental well-being. ■

How to Make Your Favorite Foods Healthier

COURTESY OF MCC

After the whirlwind of the holiday season, the season of resolutions takes over. Many people resolve to live healthier, and they may not have to give up their favorite foods to do so. Research from the National Institutes of Health suggests American adults between the ages of 18 and 49 gain an average of 1-2 pounds every year. Grazing and overeating tends to increase when the weather cools down. A 2005 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, in the fall, people tend to consume more calories, total fat and saturated fat. In the spring, people seem to prefer more carbohydrates. In addition, less powerful sunshine in winter coupled with people bundling up translates into less vitamin D being absorbed by the body. Some researchers believe there is a link between vitamin D deficiency and weight gain as well. To ensure that certain foods do not sabotage healthy eating plans, people can employ some easy modifications and make healthier versions of the foods they like to eat.

Choose crunchy foods. Those who are prone to snacking can reach for noisy foods. These include crunchy items like apples, carrots and pretzels. Scientists say that when people listen to what they are chewing — called the “crunch effect” — they eat less of that item. Tone down the cream. Delicious dishes like fettuccine alfredo typically are made with lots of butter and cream. Replace cream sauces with a healthier base made of low-fat milk thickened with flour. Increase the flavor with favorite spices. Fry with care. Use healthy oils like olive or coconut sparingly. Many foods that are traditionally fried also can be lightly coated with cooking spray and baked for a crunchy texture. Choose sodium-free seasonings. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends limiting sodium to less than 1 teaspoon of salt per day. Try options like fresh herbs or lemon juice to add some sodium-free flavor. Increase fiber content. Fiber helps one feel fuller longer and can also be helpful for digestion and heart

health. Choose the “brown” varieties of rice, pasta and breads. Replace meat with leaner forms of protein. Lean chicken, turkey and pork can replace red meats in many recipes. Some traditional meat dishes, such as burgers, also can be modified using vegetables or seafood. Lean meats dry out quickly, so keep foods moist by watching cooking times. Stock up on yogurt. Greek and other varieties of yogurt can replace sour cream and mayonnaise in many dishes. Resolving to eat healthier can be easy by making some simple swaps when preparing your favorite foods. ■

NOT JUST A SALON... A SOLUTION! LAURIE NASH

PRESIDENT, ANOTHER LOOK HAIR INSTITUTE Another Look Hair Institute is a hair restoration company created over 56 years ago by my dear grandfather. I come from a family of barbers, cosmetologists and entrepreneurs. As a child growing up, I remember going to my grandfather’s barber shop and my parents’ salons, and always meeting new people and seeing who I thought were old dear friends of my family, as they knew everything about me and siblings. My family has always connected with their clients and treated them as family right at the start of each business created. Customer service was never a question in our family. Back in the ’60s, my grandfather was balding and had the idea of how to help others in a more customizable and specialized way. After my grandfather passed of cancer and my mother was diagnosed with cancer, my dad knew there was more of a need to help patients suffering from hair loss due to medical situations, along with all the men, women and children he had already been helping. It was proven then, and still proceeds to be proven today, that healing starts from within If you LOOK GOOD, YOU FEEL GOOD! Positive attitude is a need of healing both from the inside and outside. The need began to get greater and demand of the baby boomers image concern of growing old is why I entered the business. Growing up, this was not my plan and I didn’t believe it was my interest, but I decided I would help out my grandfather and father in their business and I

had seen the reward they were giving men, women and children. It was obviously in my heart to join in and help, too. The feeling I felt when I helped someone feel like themselves and feel like they were welcome in society was not easy to explain. I began to learn from medical patients and nonsurgical hair-loss clients that the reward became addicting. I loved the creativity it took to give people their passion to be positive again. I bought the business from my father in 1999 and have grown the business 400%. I am proud to say we now have two locations The first location is Image Day Spa at 1020 E. Saginaw St., which specializes in optimal health for cancer patients by natural assistance and pleasure by chiropractors, reflexologists, massage therapists, aestheticians and, of course, hair replacement. All the work is conducted in private rooms and it is all under one roof helping so many. My second location opened two years ago at the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, which makes the image enhancing seamless to patients at Sparrow. At the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center at Sparrow Hospital, we help many cancer patients through their hair-loss journey. We educate patients when they are first diagnosed and continue with them through their journey until they are fully healed and feel 100% again. We create full-cranial prosthetics out of human hair to customize their own hair and also help with eyebrow and eyelash growth, sleep garments,

hats, turbans, and hair-stimulation products to strengthen their hair after chemotherapy. We have also proudly partnered with W3 to help fund and fit the DiGNi Cap/Cold Cap and provide assistance for human hair full-cranial prosthetics for Sparrow cancer patients in need. My goal at this point in my life and career is to always give gratitude to the individuals who got me where I am today. The inspiration of my grandfather and the positive work ethic from my father will forever move through me to help others. I am so passionate to help others and see how we can all continue to pay it forward. I am so blessed to be able to share the highest quality of hair and also use the best product to strengthen, grow and stimulate thinning or balding hair. The exciting conclusion to this industry is that we are continuously learning better and better products. I am also thankful for my staff who are always eager to learn and always put our clients’ needs first. If there is a need, we WILL find a solution. ■

COOKING UP LUCK AND GOOD HEALTH THIS NEW YEAR Whether you’re hosting family after the holidays or you’ve made a resolution to spend more time in the kitchen working on your creative cooking skills, you’ll need some new recipes to try! From Pennsylvania Dutch pork and sauerkraut to creamy dill pickle soup, we’ve got you covered with recipes that are anything but run of the mill.

PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH PORK AND SAUERKRAUT Food has a way of bringing generations together. Coming from a strong Pennsylvania German family, I remember every New Year both of my grandmothers would make pork and sauerkraut, a long-standing tradition meant to bring good luck in the coming year. Like many of our family dishes, it wouldn’t be complete without mashed potatoes and smothered with gravy.

INGREDIENTS 2 large yellow onions

2-3 pounds pork shoulder/ pork roast

1 large apple

salt

1 large can of sauerkraut

pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut onions and apple into medium to large slices. 2. Add onion, apple and pork to crockpot, cook the pork shoulder in water with salt and pepper until done.

3. Add sauerkraut to crock pot at least 45 minutes before pork is done. 4. After everything is cooked separate kraut from pork. 5. Serve with mashed potatoes. ■

DILL PICKLE SOUP INGREDIENTS

RECIPE One of my very good friends and I have this running “joke” about pickles. It started a while back, and now, every time I find a food item that has pickles as an ingredient, I will send it to her. In one of my conversations with my pickle “buddy,” I jokingly sent her a recipe for Dill Pickle Soup. After discussing it a bit more, we decided I would make it and report back to her what it tasted like. The verdict is in. It was super creamy and delicious – I had two bowls!

Two 14-ounce cans reduced sodium 1 cup sour cream chicken broth plus 1 1/2 cups water 1/4 cup water 6 cups peeled and chopped potatoes

1/2 cup dill pickle juice

2 cups peeled and chopped carrots

2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning

1 cup Polish dill pickles, chopped

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 cup butter, unsalted

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1/2 cup white flour

DIRECTIONS In a large stockpot, combine the chicken broth, 1 1/2 cups water, potatoes, carrots and butter, and bring to a boil. Turn down to simmer and cook until the potatoes are tender (about 15 minutes). Add the chopped pickles and return to boil. While the soup is boiling, you need to make up the “paste.” Put the flour, sour cream and water in a small to medium bowl. Using a whisk or a large spoon, stir until the mixture is smooth. Drop two tablespoons of the “paste” at a time into the boiling soup, stirring constantly. Some of the potatoes might get broken up a bit, but don’t worry. You might also see some small balls of flour form as you are doing this, but they will eventually almost completely disappear. When you are done adding all of the “paste,” add the pickle juice, Old Bay seasoning, black pepper and the crushed red pepper flakes. Boil an additional 5 minutes. If the soup is too thick, add a little water until you get it to the consistency you want. Garnish with a spring of dill or sliced pickles if desired. Serve immediately. ■ Cathy Blatnik grew up in Maryland, but has lived in Michigan for almost 17 years with her family, which includes her husband, adult stepson, adult daughter and a son in high school. She has been baking and cooking for as long as she can remember in Cathy’s “Kitchen.”

MINESTRONE SOUP January is National Soup Month! In honor of this, here’s a delicious and healthy recipe for a soup that’s sure to keep you warm this winter.

INGREDIENTS 2 cups chopped onion 1 cup chopped celery

1 tablespoon butter or margarine

2 cups chopped carrots

1/2 teaspoon marjoram

28-ounce can stewed and sliced tomatoes (drained) 6 cups water 14-ounce can chicken broth

1 teaspoon basil 1 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni

15.5-ounce can light or dark red kidney beans (drained)

DIRECTIONS Melt one tablespoon of butter or margarine in the bottom of a large stockpot. Add the chopped onion and celery and cook until almost soft. Add the carrots, tomatoes, water and broth. Drain the liquid from the kidney beans and add them to the soup. Add the basil, marjoram, pepper and salt. Cover with lid and let simmer for 30 minutes. Add elbow macaroni and let simmer for an additional 10 minutes.

Enjoy More Time Outdoors — Even When it’s Cold The amount of time people spend outdoors has dramatically decreased, as the Environmental Protection Agency now reports the average American spends 87% of his or her time in a residence, school building or workplace.

Being outside is linked to better moods, more physical activity and less exposure to contaminants (concentrations of some pollutants are often two to five times higher indoors). Also, people who spend time outside may not come into contact with surface germs or develop various illnesses spread as often as those who spend a lot of time indoors. Cold weather can make the desire to be outside less appealing, but it is important for one’s mental and physical well-being to get outside. The following activities might coax people outside for some crisp air. Create Snow Critters Why do snowmen and women get all of the fanfare this time of year? Just about any

Go On a Nature Hike While many plants and animals hibernate in winter, there is still plenty to see. Bring along a sketchbook or camera and capture nature in winter. White-washed hills can be beautiful to behold, and many small animals and birds look even more vivid against the white backdrop of snow. These activities are entertaining and also great exercise. When venturing outdoors in winter, dress in layers. This way clothing can be put on or taken off to reduce the likelihood of hypothermia. ■

Hidden Ways You Can Benefit From Having Hobbies Commitments to work and family take up the bulk of many people’s free time, making it hard

to squeeze in a favorite hobby. But hobbies can benefit people in some interesting ways. Understanding those hidden benefits may compel some people to make more time for their favorite downtime activities. Hobbies can improve your efficiency. Penciling more activities into your day planner may not seem like something that will help you create more time for hobbies, but it just might. For example, if you know you have a softball game or choir practice at night, then you might waste less time surfing the internet or talking around the water cooler during the workday. In a 2017 study conducted for the staffing firm OfficeTeam, researchers found that the average office employee spends about five hours per week on his or her mobile phone doing things that have nothing to do with the job. That’s five hours you could be working, opening up more time for hobbies before or after work. Hobbies can foster social connections. reduction in in-person social intercourse that once enriched Americans’ social lives. By making more time for hobbies, particularly those that promote interaction with other adults, men and women can foster social connections that otherwise might never blossom. Hobbies can provide health benefits. The American Institute of Stress notes that some hobbies can help people reduce their stress. The AIS notes that some 56 million women in the United States now knit or crochet. That marks a 51% increase over the last decade. That revival is attributed to the stress-reducing properties of knitting and crocheting. Men and women coping with stress need not learn how to wield a sewing needle to alleviate their stress. Activities that promote slowing down and induce a relaxation response similar to knitting and crocheting can be equally beneficial.

‘UNCOVERED’ NEKEYTA BRUNSON

Nekeyta Brunson is a woman who loves to help others. At a young age she developed alopecia, a condition in which her immune system attacks her hair follicles and causes baldness. Even though she’s had this condition since she was a child, she really didn’t face it until she was an adult. “It was just kind of like one of those things that was known and not really discussed,” Brunson explained. “I wore a lot of scarves in the house. I just continued to hide that I had alopecia since it had developed in first grade.” It was at a track club with her kids that began her journey to where she is today, after her daughter spotted a woman wearing a head wrap.

Brunson. “Once you get diagnosed in the doctor’s office, they may give you a list of places you could go to purchase a wig or a hat, but that part is selfexplanatory. But when I did a marketing analysis, local businesses sometimes have bad reviews because it’s a very emotional process that they’re going through. Someone would show up to these businesses and say that they want to look like themselves, but it was difficult to help people piece that together in the hour or two that they have together. So, it was really missing a personal touch.”

It’s great to help women see that they can still be themselves.

“My daughters pointed out that a woman didn’t have hair. She was like, ‘Oh, you can do it, too’,” said Brunson. “So, once she had said that, I had a waking moment where I thought, ‘OK, this may be the time to talk about what’s going on.’ That’s when I started the journey through myself, looking at what my options were.”

She explained the places that would provide that personal attention were often out of the price range of people who really needed it.

As she went through the process of self-discovery, other women reached out and expressed that they were inspired by seeing her confidently wearing a wrap out in public.

“A few years in I met Sheila Burks at a church function,” said Brunson, talking about her business associate. “She was with her mother, and both were uncovered. It was early on and I wanted to see if she was interested in working with me. And she was very excited about the prospect, with this issue being near and dear to her heart.”

“And that’s when I really started to realize that there was a need for a consultation in Lansing,” said

So, Brunson began UnCovered to help women through this stage in their life and to become more comfortable with themselves.

Brunson explained the process of the consultation. “We consult with the client first, to see if this is something that is short term or long term and what way to handle it. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ because every condition is different,” said Brunson. “And Sheila comes in with the confidence coaching to help make people as comfortable as possible. “People say that it’s just hair,” Brunson continued, “but it becomes a mental health process and it can really harm people’s self-esteem. So, it’s great to show women that they can still be confident and still be professional or a great mom or a beautiful woman even though you are going through something like this.” Brunson said her anxieties occasionally return, but knowing she is helping others helps boost her own confidence. “For me personally, to be able to walk through this process, it’s very humbling to feel because some days I still have my own insecurities about how I look,” Brunson said. “But to see that I’m making a difference and helping someone who otherwise would have been anxious or overwhelmed, it’s great to help women see that they can still be themselves.” ■ Kyle Dowling is an employee of M3 Group and is pursuing a writing degree at Michigan State University. CUT BACK ON DRIVING.

Men and women who can find ways to reduce the amount of time they spend behind the wheel can reduce vehicle emissions that harm the planet and cut back on fuel consumption. Reducing fuel consumption also reduces the fuel consumed and emissions produced by the trucks that transport that fuel from the refinery to the gas station. If possible, bike to work or take public transportation. People who live in more remote areas where biking or public transportation is not feasible can organize office car pools.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT CAN BENEFIT THE PLANET COURTESY OF MCC

New Year’s resolutions are typically made by individuals looking to improve their lives. Some people may resolve to read more, while others may be determined to start living healthier lifestyles. Men and women who want to improve their lives while also contributing to the greater good may want to tailor their resolutions around protecting the planet. Eco-friendly New Year’s resolutions may benefit individuals in some surprising ways. While women and men no doubt recognize the long-term benefits of protecting the planet they call home, the following resolutions also provide some more immediate benefits.

UNPLUG SET-TOP CABLE BOXES.

It’s not an especially time-consuming commitment, but unplugging set-top cable boxes and DVRs when they’re not being used can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and save substantial amounts of energy. A 2011 study from the National Resources Defense Council found that the electricity required to operate set-top cable boxes resulted in 16 million tons of CO2 emissions in the United States alone. The electricity needed to operate such boxes also costs American households more than $3 billion per year. The same study found that two-thirds of that energy consumption occurs when viewers are not watching or recording content. By unplugging these devices when they are not in use, people can save money and greatly reduce CO2 emissions.

SPREAD THE WORD. Another easy way that eco-friendly women and men can resolve to benefit the planet is to spread the word about issues facing the climate and what everyday citizens can do. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project aims to unite people from all walks of life in an effort to encourage their leaders to focus on the climate. The project’s Climate Reality Leadership Corps is a global network of activists working to spread awareness about the climate and how to address the issues facing it.

Eco-friendly New Year’s resolutions, even those that require little effort, can have a profound impact on the planet.

SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. According to the Grace Communications Foundation, an organization devoted to increasing public awareness of the critical environmental and public health issues created by the industrial food system, sustainable agriculture is the production of food, fiber, or other plant or animal products using farming techniques that protect the environment. Sustainable agriculture also employs farming techniques that protect public health and ensure the welfare of animals. Sustainable farms do not use chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or genetically modified seeds, and such farms take steps to prevent the degradation of soil, water and other natural resources.
