Mayor ’s message Welcome to the November edition of The City.

The past year has really gone by quickly, and this month Councillors will elect a new Mayor to oversee the City of Greater Dandenong. My time at the helm has been enjoyable and productive, and I would like to thank my fellow councillors and the community for supporting me during my term as Mayor.

This month we celebrate National Recycling Week, and Council is always looking for ways to encourage residents to recycle and reuse. Get some recycling tips and find out about a free workshop on page 7.

Every year Council hosts the Walk Against Family Violence in November. This year we invite the whole community to take a stand against family violence and join us for our walk through central Dandenong. Turn to page 8 and 9 to read more about the walk and our special guest speaker.

My City Cricket is a popular sport with 15 clubs registered across the City of Greater Dandenong. And while volunteers, players and administrators make sure games happen across the summer season, Council officers are tasked with looking after the 22 turf pitches. Preparations start before the season even begins and continue on a weekly basis, with equipment such as this roller used to ensure matches are played on the best possible grounds.

Following the success of a Christmas decoration competition last year, Council is again offering a prize to Greater Dandenong’s Best Dressed House and Best Dressed Business.

Every year Council decorates its main activity centres in Noble Park, Dandenong and Springvale for Christmas, and we know that many of our residents and business owners love to join in the festive spirit.

This year we invite our residents and businesses to take photos of their own Christmas displays and submit them for a chance to share in $3000 of prizes awarded by the Mayor.

Dinner with the Mayor In one of his last official functions as the Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, Mayor Youhorn Chea will host a charity dinner.

The Sensational Springvale Mayoral Charity Dinner will raise much needed funds for a range of local charities, including the Springvale Benevolent Society, Friends of Refugees, Life Without Barriers and the Springvale Ethnic Chinese Elderly Caring and Friendship Association.

The dinner will be held on Friday 9 November, at 7pm, at Springvale City Hall, 397-405 Springvale Road, Springvale.

Tickets are $80 per person and include a three-course meal and drinks, including beer, wine and soft drink.

Rising cost of energy Greater Dandenong households hit with high energy bills are encouraged to consider some simple ways to help reduce the growing costs.

Keeping your house cool in summer can lead to higher than usual bills and can put a lot of pressure on energy supplies. But here are some tips to help ease the burden:

house that keeps itself cool can help reduce the amount of time an air conditioner needs to be effective, but if you need to use the air conditioner set it to 24–25C in summer

► Keep

doors closed between the hotter and cooler parts of your home and spend as much time as possible in the cooler parts

► If

it is cooler outside open windows and doors, particularly late at night and early in the morning

► Avoid

using the oven and stovetop on hot days, have a barbeque outside if you can and use the microwave if you need to heat something up

► Put

draught stoppers at the base of doors to help keep cool air in.

Climate change is impacting on our everyday environment, but simple things like reducing energy usage can help address the effects.

The City of Greater Dandenong recognises that everyone has a role to play in reducing our impact on the environment and preparing for climate change.

Council will work to develop a Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan which will help the City of Greater Dandenong reduce its carbon emissions and prepare itself for the impacts of climate change, while also empowering the community to do the same.

Cr Sean O’Reilly Have you seen the giant mounds of dirt in Springvale? The new Springvale Community and Library Precinct site is ready for construction and it is progressing to plan. The car park at the rear of Springvale City Hall is now open and is accessible from Grace Park Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue.

Our diverse and energetic seniors community was jumping and jiving at our recent Seniors Multicultural Dance, an event that for many was reminiscent of “Springy Rock” from decades ago.

Dancing is one of the most effective and enjoyable forms of exercise. Council encourages all residents to participate in community life, and I have to say it was wonderful to see so many people celebrating in our beautiful City Hall.

I recently attended a celebration of a different kind, with the official opening of a new $3 million Peter Mathison Pavilion in Springvale South. The pavilion is now home to the Harrisfield Hurricanes Soccer Club and the

Dandenong Park was established more than a century ago, and is now undergoing a major transformation to modernise the space and make it a wonderful community asset. A public toilet, which will become an architectural feature of the park, is currently under construction and should be completed by Christmas.

Further works to rebuild the Stan Prior Stage, and install public barbeques, park furniture and picnic shelters, as well as public lighting, landscaping and signage and at the time of printing they were due to be presented to Councillors at a recent Council meeting.

If approved the works should be completed by mid-2019.

Springvale South Cricket Club, and has been refurbished to include female-friendly change rooms, referee change rooms, new public toilets and a new commercial grade kitchen.

Work is also due to commence on the replacement of cricket nets to further improve the grounds.

Council is proud to invest in top class facilities across our city and will continue to do so. We understand the importance of family-friendly sporting clubs, and sport is a real reason to get outside, breathe in fresh air and enjoy the improving weather.

► Red Gum Ward There is always so much going on in central Dandenong, and a number of projects are starting to take shape.

Pedestrian data collected over the past few years have shown that the intersection of Walker and Lonsdale streets is the busiest intersection in Dandenong, while the intersection of Walker and Langhorne streets is the second busiest.

The new granite paving for Stage 1 is almost complete, with the new lighting, street furniture and tree planting due to follow shortly. Stage 2 will see the works continued up to Lonsdale Street, and is scheduled to start soon.

Mayoral Election The City of Greater Dandenong is divided into four wards.

Community Transport Review Research has found that being sociable later in life benefits your mental health and wellbeing.

The City of Greater Dandenong’s Community Transport Service plays an important role in helping the frail, elderly, and people with poor mobility, to access a range of social activities by providing specialised transport services.

Activities include social support groups, seniors clubs and groups, libraries, hydrotherapy classes and shopping.

Council is undertaking a review of community transport options in Greater Dandenong to plan for the future and help keep our ageing residents stay connected to their community.

More than 500 people, including residents and service providers, responded to a survey about the need and demand for community transport in Greater Dandenong.

Pre-Election gambling forum Pokies cost our community more than $121 million each year.

That’s more than $333,000 each day and puts Greater Dandenong among the biggest losers in the state.

Following the survey a Community Transport Providers Forum was planned for late October, and at the time of printing it was expected to consider how local transport providers could work together to provide flexible and responsive community transport services to Greater Dandenong residents. The Forum also set out to identify any gaps in service that Council could plan and advocate for into the future.

Following the Transport Providers Forum series of community meetings will be held for interested residents to be given an opportunity to comment on the key findings of the Forum and the future of community transport in Greater Dandenong. Each ward has two or three councillors who are elected every four years by the community.

The City of Greater Dandenong has 11 councillors whose role is to represent the interests of residents and ratepayers.

A special Council meeting will be held on Thursday 15 November to elect the Mayor for the next 12 months.

Each year one Greater Dandenong councillor is voted by the others to become the Mayor.

The Mayor is a spokesperson for Council, helps fellow councillors make fair and good decisions and carries out ceremonial duties.

Bin collection days Due to the growing number of residents in the Keysborough area and to ensure that Council delivers the best possible service to its residents, in early 2019 the garbage, recycling and waste collection days for some areas in Keysborough will change.

The affected areas and residents will individually receive a letter advising of the change of day and the new collection day.

The changes will only affect about 1,200 properties.

Council is in the early stages of planning the changes, and will ensure all affected residents will be fully informed before the changes are made.

Walk Against Family Violence The City of Greater Dandenong will stand together and say “No to Family Violence” during the sixth annual Walk Against Family Violence.

Last year hundreds of people walked from Dandenong Market to Harmony Square to listen to guest speakers and take a stand against violence in the home.

This year the walk will be held on Tuesday 20 November and will include guest speaker Jen Harwood, who will share her personal tale of survival and her tips for empowering people who are stuck in situations of domestic violence, or who witness violent acts.

Those who take part in the walk will also be asked to contribute their thoughts to a public art project that will be on display on the lawns of Harmony Square.

Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie said the aim of the walk was to raise awareness and promote relationships based on respect and equality between women and men.

“Council has long been a strong supporter of the White Ribbon Day campaign, and is currently undergoing the strenuous re-accreditation process to retain the title of a White Ribbon Workplace, “Mr Bennie said.

“Family violence is a significant issue here in Greater Dandenong, as it is across Australia. Nobody is immune from it and we all need to work together to address it.

“I am calling on the whole community to join this walk and be a part of the solution.”

Myth vs Reality Domestic violence is not black and white. There are many complex issues that lead to violent situations in the home, and often leaving a situation is not simple.

Myth: Domestic violence only affects a small number of Australians.

Reality: Statistics show that in Australia, 1 in 3 women experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, 1 in 4 children are exposed to domestic violence, and 1 in 19 men experience violence by a partner.

Myth: A victim should just leave the abusive relationship.

Reality: People often stay in abusive relationship for a variety of complex reasons, including financial dependence, social embarrassment, isolation, cultural background, concern for children, family pressure and a lack of community support.

Myth: There is nothing we can do to stop violence against women.

Reality: Some people think rape and domestic violence is a normal part of society, or that perpetrators are ‘born that way’ and cannot change. That is not true and is a perspective that is harmful to both men and women.

No one is born violent. With the right support society can change these attitudes and behaviours and stop this violence.

Jen Harwood’s story Jen Harwood was a successful business coach and motivational speaker before her life was torn apart by domestic violence. Her message is that domestic violence can (and does) happen to anyone. It does not discriminate.

Jen will share her story as part of Greater Dandenong’s sixth annual Walk Against Family Violence. She hopes her story will change the life of at least one person in the audience, but more importantly she hopes it will start a conversation.

“If we are going to change as a nation this needs to be a conversation that we have. And it is not just about women.

We need men to be having this conversation, saying I don’t want it happening to my daughter, my mother, my sister.

It takes all of us to work together to create the community that we want,” she said.

“We need people to come out and normalise it, we need men to call it out and we need a system that will support women to come out.”

It was as much a shock to Jen as it was to those around her when she found herself in a violent marriage. Following the first violent incident which happened in the presence of her then two-year-old daughter, Jen made the decision to call the police. They charged her ex-husband with assault.

“As soon as he was arrested I knew I had to get myself educated, I read about court, what an AVO (apprehended violence order) is. I went to support groups and watched and listened to the stories. What I have experienced is that most women who go through this are passive, they just can’t believe they are in this situation,” she said.

“Domestic violence creeps up. It’s an erosion of boundaries. Over a period of time it forces you to hand power over to someone else because they need to feel power.”

It took Jen some time to actually get out of the marriage, but once she did it was the support of two key people which gave her the strength to focus on survival.

“You look at people in the community and you just don’t even know what they are going through. But we don’t talk about domestic violence, we just don’t do that,” she said.

“Rosie Batty started the way by bringing domestic violence into the mainstream. We need for people to get up and speak out. When a woman says ‘I can’t do this anymore’, or finally says she has a problem you have to act.”

Jen says she believes staying in a violent relationship is harder than making the decision to leave.

“I am not a victim to what happened anymore. I endured it for seven years, but my life is not over. I look back at myself and I actually love that Jen. I mean, look at what she dealt with, what she did. That Jen is part of me.”

“We need to address this now in the hope that our children close the loop. We need to protect and support the women who are living this right now. They are the ones suffering, they are teaching their daughters to stay and teaching their sons that this is acceptable. We need to fight for women now, not future victims of domestic violence.”

Star returns to Drum Theatre Dandenong’s Drum theatre is excited to welcome back the fabulous Rhonda Burchmore.

Following the huge success of her ABBA-solutely Fabulous show in 2017, Burchmore is taking off the 70s catsuit and putting on her favourite festive gown for a Christmas show spectacular.

Summer Reading Club This year’s Summer Reading Club promises some awesome Aussie adventures.

Join with some of your favourite Australian characters and animals to discover great books and fantastic stories through the annual club.

Vaccinate against meningococcal Council provides vaccines...

Calling all artists Walker Street Gallery is looking for submissions for its annual 9 by 5 Exhibition.

Have your work shown for sale at this nationally recognised exhibition. The only catch is that the work must be created on a board measuring 9 inches by 5 inches.

Registration is $15 which includes purchase of a board. Entries are due by Thursday 22 November, and the exhibition will be on display from 29 November– 19 December.

Cases of meningococcal disease have increased over the past few years.

Meningococcal is rare but often progresses rapidly, and can cause serious disability or death.

One in 10 infected people can die, and around one in five will suffer serious long term disabilities such as brain damage, deafness and loss of limbs.

Early symptoms may include fever, irritability, nausea and vomiting, neck pain and stiffness, sensitivity to light and drowsiness. A distinctive rash often develops. Seek urgent medical advice if you are concerned.

Babies and children under five years are most at risk, followed by adolescents, that is why free vaccinations are delivered to these age groups.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent meningococcal disease. Council provides vaccines to prevent against the common strains, A, C, W and Y, for children at 12 months of age via the regular immunisation sessions, and for Year 10 students who receive a consent form from their school at the beginning of each year.

Meningococcal B vaccine is also highly recommended to protect people from the age of two months from this strain of the disease. While this vaccine is not free it can be provided at a cost by your family doctor.

Peregrine Cup

Footy competition soars

An annual football match which raises money for charity is also raising the profile of Aussie Rules in our multicultural community.

This year’s cup will be contested by the Southern Stars and the Northern Nighthawks at a Multicultural Day at Tatterson Park on Sunday 25 November.

The Peregrine Cup was first played in 2012, and has raised more than $10,000 for various charities. It is named after the competition’s major sponsor, Peregrine Business and Accounting Services.

The day will feature appearances by AFL players, Auskick activities, food trucks and free family fun.

Last year’s event raised $3,500 for the Ladder Foundation. This year the

Servicemen and women from the Dandenong and Gippsland regions will be recognised with a bridge named in their honour.

A community art project encouraging young people to explore human rights will culminate in a free art exhibition at Heritage Hill.

A special Remembrance Day Service will commemorate members of the 52nd Battalion who fought in World War II. During the ceremony a bridge in neighbouring Casey will be named the Gippsland Regiment Bridge in honour of the 52nd Battalion.

The service theme will highlight the four values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice, and will honour the past while celebrating the present.

Organiser Kevin Walsh said the service was open to all members of the community, and in a reflection of the theme of inclusion, he would like to see all parts of Greater Dandenong’s multicultural community represented.

The Express Your Rights art project was organised by the Springvale Monash Legal Service Project with support from Connection Art Space and the City of Greater Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong’s With One Voice choir will also be performing and light catering will be provided.

Across six workshops a Community Development Worker and volunteers engaged with young people to teach them about human rights and their legal rights and responsibilities. Connection Art Space artists also helped them explore different art mediums.

The result is the Express Your Rights exhibition that will be on show at the Heritage Hill Gallery from 22 November to 20 December. Work on display will include painting, drawing, photography and sculpture.
