2016 Otto Golf Classic, a Fun Day at The Orchards

Chamber members were excited for nice, warm weather at this year’s Otto Golf Classic! Lightning moved us indoors after 9 holes, but nobody went thirsty or hungry as Grey Eagle Distributors kept the beer flowing and Chick-fil-A provided an ample amount of food for lunch. Thank you to The Orchards Golf Club for their generous hospitality!

A Message from the Executive Director Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is with a mix of joy for what we have accomplished together and sadness in the knowledge that I will miss our special relationships through the Chamber that I announce my retirement as Executive Director, effective May 31, 2016. The Board of Directors selected current Membership Development Director, Wendy Pfeil, to take over the position beginning June 01, 2016.

I feel confident that I will be leaving the Chamber not only in a fiscally sound position, but also uniquely positioned to support community relationships and businesses, build partnerships regionally, push economic growth, and create good will for the immediate present and the long term.

My feeling of satisfaction stems not only from the support I have received from the Board and the Members, but also my staff, who have been my partners in ensuring that quality programs are developed and implemented, member needs are met, and the greater mission and goals of the Chamber are achieved.

I am genuinely excited for the possibilities and potential that Wendy’s leadership will bring, to build on the solid foundation of who we are now as a proud and progressive Chamber.

From the bottom of my heart, I express my deep and profound gratitude for the opportunities I have had to make a difference, and the support I have received from each of you.

Reflection Day & Graduation| May 06, 2016

The 2015-2016 Leadership Belleville Class concluded with Reflection Day at Grey Eagle Distributors on Friday, May 06. As part of the class requirements, the 23 participants were asked to create a presentation reflecting on their journey through Leadership Belleville. Later that day, the Class met at St. Clair Country Club for dinner and graduation ceremony, where Tina Moore was named class president.

Tina Moore: “Leadership Belleville is a wonderful program. I joined in hopes of gaining business contacts. I succeeded in that goal, but unexpectedly gained so much more on a personal level. The overnight retreat, teambuilding exercises and small group meetings with our classmates allowed us to form bonds that will last a lifetime. The various tours provided amazing experiences and knowledge on Belleville businesses, history and government. Meeting with officials at Scott Air Force Base, touring training facilities and boarding aircrafts was also an incredible experience. Each and every day spent with our Leadership Belleville class was fantastic. If you have ever considered joining the program, do it now. It is well worth the time and investment!”

Leadership Belleville Next Leadership Belleville Class Now Forming The Leadership Belleville program is a unique executive training program coordinated through the Chamber. It provides a foundation of skills and knowledge to emerging local leaders. In addition to developing leadership skills, the program seeks to foster a commitment to community service and provide opportunities for economic growth for local businesses and organizations.

Each Leadership Belleville Class is composed of up to 25 professionals from diverse career, political, social and cultural backgrounds who demonstrate the highest leadership qualities. These classmates create a valuable network of resources, benefiting both alumni and their business sponsors. The course begins with a kick-off breakfast at the end of August. Then, in September, all participants attend a two-day overnight retreat to focus on team building, leadership and communication skills. The retreat provides the participants with the opportunity to bond and develop significant relationships that will be useful in their professional, civic and personal endeavors.

The nine-month program dedicates one day each month to a specific issue or subject pertaining to the Belleville area, such as history, arts, religion, government, business and industry, education, healthcare, community service and aging, economic development, law enforcement and justice, and ethics.

Participants will be given the chance to meet and engage a large number of business, community, and political leaders during each session. In May, a graduation dinner is held in the evening for all participants, their spouses or guests, as well as program presenters and facilitators. Participants must meet certain criteria to graduate and join the prestigious Leadership Belleville Alumni Association.

The tuition for the nine-month course is $1,100 for members of the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce and $1,250 for non-members. To ensure admittance into the next class, applications for the course should be submitted as early as possible. The deadline to register is July 31st. Chamber News St. Louis Business Journal Ranks Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce 3rd Largest Chamber in St. Louis Area for 2016 On May 06, 2016, The Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce was ranked as the third largest Chamber in the Greater St. Louis Area, and largest on the Illinois side, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. The list ranks chambers according to the most recent annual budget. The Chamber followed the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce ($2.28 million budget) and the St. Louis Regional Chamber ($9.5 million budget).

The Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce currently operates on an annual budget of $675,000 with a membership of more than 550 businesses. The Chamber provides its members with an array of networking and marketing opportunities, committees in which to get involved, workshops and many other valuable resources. Members are able to take advantage of many of these opportunities free of charge or minimal charge as they can be included with membership dues.

SWIC 7.0 - College Celebrates 70 Years Belleville Junior College opened its doors with 169 students in fall 1946. Chamber Member Update MATT GOMRIC JOINS COMMERCE BANK AS METRO EAST COMMERCIAL TEAM LEADER/SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT Harlan Ferry, president, Metro East Region, recently announced that Matt Gomric has joined Commerce Bank as metro east commercial team leader/senior vice president. In his new position, Gomric is responsible for business development and relationship management related to Commerce’s full line of banking, borrowing and treasury management solutions for commercial clients.

In making this announcement, Ferry stated, “Matt is an experienced banker and proven leader. We are pleased to welcome Matt to our commercial team. As a member of the metro east community and with his expertise in banking, he will provide outstanding service and solutions to our customers.”

With 18 years in the financial industry, Gomric has extensive experience in delivering commercial banking solutions and developing client relationships. Prior to his banking career, Gomric was a football coach for McKendree University.

Gomric is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

Don’t let your volleyball game get rusty this summer. Keep your skills top-notch for the school season by training with the Southwestern Illinois College volleyball team! Attendees will receive training from the SWIC volleyball players and Head Coach Warren Thomas. Training will be every Friday between June 10 and July 29. Grades 3-6 will train from 9 to 11 a.m., and grades 7-12 will train from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Instruction will be given on serving, passing, setting, hitting, digging and more! The cost per visit is $10. Training will be held at the Belleville Campus Varsity Gym. No pre-registration is required.

Chamber Member Update MEMORIAL REGIONAL HEALTH SERVICES, METRO-EAST SERVICES, MEMORIAL GROUP AND BJC HEALTHCARE FILE CON TO BUILD MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING IN SHILOH Memorial Regional Health Services, Metro-East Services, Inc., Memorial Group, Inc. and BJC HealthCare have filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (IHFSRB) to construct a three-story 70,500 square foot medical office building adjacent to Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, Illinois.

“Construction of a medical office building in Shiloh always has been a strategic priority for this site in order to support demand for outpatient services at Memorial Hospital East,” said Mark J. Turner, president of Memorial Regional Health Services. “Our strategic affiliation with BJC HealthCare allows us to begin this project sooner than expected.”

Turner said that physician practices currently located within Memorial Hospital East will relocate to suites in the new medical office building along with new physician practices and services.

Holland Construction Services has been selected to build the $22 million facility on the 94-acre site.

The CON application is expected to be reviewed by the IHFSRB at its August meeting. If approved, construction will begin later this year with completion slated for fourth quarter 2017.

LEADERS IN BLIND ATHLETICS HONORED AT BALLPARK VILLAGE

In May, the space occupied by the greatest names in baseball hosted MindsEye’s Vision for the Game ceremony to honor leaders who make athletics accessible to the blind community: Jack Lenk, Webster Groves Lions Club | D’Marco Farr, 101ESPN | Assumption Catholic Church | Allsup, Inc These individuals and organizations have supported the game of beepball for blind athletes. In beepball, participants are blindfolded and the bases and balls emit sound. Beepball is a ten year tradition for MindsEye, St. Louis’s audio information service for the blind.

Beepball athlete Anthony says the game is vital to the St. Louis area: “[After losing my sight], it was like a dream come true to be able to play ball again.”

ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL REQUESTS PHOTO SUBMISSIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY TO BE DISPLAYED AT NEW FACILITY UPON OPENING, FALL 2017

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is building a new, state of the art hospital to provide high-quality health care to the patients of the Southwestern Illinois Region. The facility is expected to open in the fall of 2017. Once the new facility is open, the hospital hopes to have beautiful, healing artwork adorn the walls. In order to involve the community in this process, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is asking that all photographers (professional and amateur alike) submit digital photographs to contribute to the new building’s aesthetic quality. Once photos are chosen, they will be transformed into gallery wraps in order to maintain a common theme throughout the facility.

“We are looking for artwork that will bring the essence of our region into the hospital to create a healing environment and inspire the mind, body, and spirit. The ultimate goal is to share the meaningful and beautiful imagery submitted by our community with all who enter our building,” states Peg Sebastian, President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “If you have a photo that you feel will bring joy or comfort to our colleagues, patients and visitors, I encourage you to submit it for consideration as a piece of art for the new facility.”

While not all images will be chosen, a $25 premium fee will be paid to the artist(s) for each photo used. Your submission authorizes St. Elizabeth’s Hospital limited use of your photo, to be reproduced as a wall hanging displayed throughout St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL HONORS EXTRAORDINARY NURSE WITH NATIONAL DAISY AWARD Recently, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital awarded Chelsea Watson, a Registered Nurse from the Float Pool, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s nationwide program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. St. Elizabeth’s introduced participation in the nationally recognized DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing in May 2015.

Watson’s nomination came from a patient’s daughter who felt her compassion was overwhelming during a difficult time. The nomination notes, “I am writing about an RN named Chelsea Watson, she was one of the nicest and compassionate nurses. Her compassion was overwhelming. My mother came into your ER on March 14th not knowing if she was going to make it. A staff member came to us and asked us to wait in the family room and a nurse would come and talk to us. We waited, my sister and I, pacing the floor, waiting. Then, Chelsea came to Chelsea Watson, a Registered Nurse talk to us about how our mother was doing. She was very informative and compassionate.

She made me feel so at ease during this difficult time. I cannot thank her enough. I do know from HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s Float Pool, receives the DAISY Award if I ever have to come to this hospital as a patient, I hope I have a nurse like Chelsea, or someone as wonderful as she is! Thank you all again for helping my mother.”

“I am honored to receive the National DAISY Award,” shared Watson. “I am blessed to work alongside so many talented, compassionate women and men. I am also grateful to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and the Daisy Award Foundation for taking the time to acknowledge the hard work and dedication put forth by my co-workers and I.” A total of 15 dedicated nurses were also recognized for receiving additional individual nominations for this quarter.

MEMORIAL EMPLOYEES HONORED; LINDA FRITSCHE NAMED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

More than 425 Memorial Hospital, Memorial Care Center, Memorial Medical Group and Belleville Health and Sports Center employees were honored at this year’s Employee Recognition Dinner held May 6 at Fischer’s Restaurant in Belleville, Illinois. Linda Fritsche of Swansea was named Employee of the Year out of 12 candidates recognized as Employee of the Month throughout the year. She has worked at Memorial for 21 years and is a registered nurse.

Linda has been described as a fantastic advocate and resource for her coworkers. She is a team player and remains calm during stressful situations. She works to build strong relationships with patients and is always willing to lend a hand. In her nomination it was stated that Linda “has a strong desire to meet the needs of patients and ensure their care is reflective of our vision.”

Linda’s job duties include managing a team and assuming the roles of charge nurse. For Linda, the most rewarding part of her job is working as a team to care for patients and seeing their progress to discharge.

“I have worked on 2 Center since the unit opened and have enjoyed working with staff and many diverse patients,” Linda said.

Chamber Member Update HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES ON TARGET TO TOP $160M IN REVENUE IN 2016 It took Swansea, Illinois based Holland Construction Services (Holland) 25 years to grow to $80 million in annual revenue, a milestone it reached in 2011, but in the five short years since then, Holland has undergone a period of rapid growth that has the firm projecting revenues of double that amount for 2016. With annual revenues on target to top $160 million, and its workforce up by 37 percent since 2011 to 80 office and field staff, the company’s 30th year in operation is expected to be its best ever.

This past year, the company broke ground on HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, Ill., a $140 million joint venture that is the largest single project in Holland’s history; and it comes on the heels of the recently completed $80 million Memorial Hospital-East in Shiloh, Ill., also a joint venture. Another notable project was Cortona at Forest Park, Holland’s first luxury multi-family project in St. Louis, completed in 2014. Today, Holland is under construction on three additional large-scale multi-family projects in Missouri, including Evo Luxury Apartments in Richmond Heights, Alinea—Town & Country, and The Encore at Forest Park, with several more projects in pre-construction.

Other large projects completed in the past five years include more than $20 million in recreation facilities for Missouri Baptist University and the City of Bridgeton, Mo., (both in 2015); the new Liberal Arts Building for Southwestern Illinois College (2013) and Memorial Hospital’s Orthopedic & Neurosciences Center (2011), both in Belleville, Ill., and two multi-family complexes in southwestern Illinois– Parkway Lakeside Homes in O’Fallon, and the Villas at Crystal Lake in Swansea (2011). Holland also has completed more than $150 million in K-12 school projects in Illinois since 2011, including new schools for the West Washington, Wesclin, Lebanon, Flora, and Wayne City School Districts, as well as the new Father McGivney High School.

Springboard to Success

Springboard to Success Empowers Women The Third Annual Springboard to Success, hosted by Sandberg, Phoenix and von Gontard, P.C., along with the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce and the O’Fallon-Shiloh Chamber of Commerce took place at the Regency Center in O’Fallon, IL, on May 4th.

The forum was created to help empower women on their paths to success and has continued to grow in attendance and support over the last three years. Speakers at the forum brought knowledgeable and engaging perspectives to their audience. This year’s presentations/presenters included: “Mask-ulinity: Revealing the Man Behind” by Richard Avdoian, Midwest Business Institute, Inc.; “Internet Safety” by Police Chief Steve Johnson, Swansea Police Department; and “Role Reversal” by Lorraine Cavataio, Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard.

Following these presentations, the day concluded with a panel discussion on “Taking a Different Path,” that focused on women who have taken on non-traditional roles throughout their careers. Speakers on the pannel included Teresa Johnson, Chariti Home, Col. JUNIOR IDOL auditions 09

Auditions from 4:00pm - 8:00pm | Pre-registration not required

Open to Ages 10 - 17

2 age categories | 10-13 & 14-17 $10 Entry fee with application (non-refundable) The top 5 finalists in each category will be chosen at the preliminary auditions.

Those finalists will compete for the top prize on Saturday, October 8th during the 33rd Annual Chili Cook-off.

At auditions, contestants will be asked to sing a cappella for the judges. Individual contestants only - no duets or teams. The song is of the contestant’s choice and can be from any musical genre. Contestants will be judged on the following: Vocal Ability (40 pts), Timing (30 pts), Stage Presence (10 pts), Mastery of Lyrics (10 pts) and Judges Overall Impression (10 pts).
