NE of East Gippsland’s best wine-producing gems can be found just 3km off the Princes Highway in Nicholson. Nicholson River Winery is owned by Ken and Juliet Eckersley, who have been growing and making unique and award-winning wines since 1978 in this now fully sustainable winery. Ken’s 50-plus years of experience began as a home brewer, which saw him make beer and fruit wines. “In those days, to make wine, you’d buy grapes from Mildura off the back of a truck at the Victoria Markets. I’d make a few small batches and whenever I
made something drinkable, I’d gain more confidence. And this is what I tell anyone who asks about how to get started — just have a go, make small batches, make mistakes, and learn from them, and just get all the experience. Being the oldest winery around, I’ve made the most mistakes, but that’s how I learned.” “When we started there were two wineries here in Gippsland,” says Ken. “My wife Juliet and I just loved wine, so we formed this group of wine-loving Francophiles [lovers of France and French culture], which was made up of ex-pats like us who had lived overseas, who now lived
in Gippsland, the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula. We all came together with a shared vision to make Victoria a great wine-making state,” explains 80-year-old Ken. “It was a wonderful spirit and we got swept up into it.” “We would meet up for entire weekends and talk about all the basic things like site selection — for example, choosing the right place; it had to be modelled on Burgundy or Bordeaux, for the temperatures; or choosing the right varieties to plant — and it was all about France, of course. We all believed we were making our own France here in
Australia! Some even wore berets as they pruned!” “We’d spend our weekends planting, but there were so many things to learn. This area, for example, suffers from vicious droughts at times; in the beginning we would have to carry buckets of water taken from the tap to the vines, just to keep them alive. “This is the sort of area where average temperatures and rainfalls are misleading — we had to learn that. We also had to learn about the soils. In Australia, the soils are generally very old, and they are what’s called ‘alluvial’, where they lack
trace elements — specifically, those required for grapes to grow (e.g., copper, zinc, boron). “We had a couple of sheep and when they died, I had the vet do an autopsy, which you could do back then; they discovered their brains had shrunk due to a lack of trace elements. “I then discovered that places around here had licks so the animals could consume those important trace elements. So we had to add that to our vines by using seaweed spray and the like.”
