What are non-credit courses and how are they different from college credit?

The Center for Workforce Learning is the non-credit division of Grayson College. Our mission is to help students gain skills needed in the workforce and to enrich their lives through new experiences. Learning is a constant pursuit - there’s no such thing as “having learned enough.”

Unlike college classes taken for credit, our classes tend to be shorter, less formal and user friendly. You will receive Continuing Education Units (CEU) instead of college credits. Please note that CEUs are not transferable to other colleges. However, they are respected and used in the workforce.

What do I need to enroll in a CWL course?

We have a simple registration process. Once you register with us the first time, we are able to provide you with your own student ID for all future use. We don’t need transcripts, and we don’t require TSI scores to enroll.

I haven’t been in school in years, and I’m a bit uncertain about the college experience.

Our instructors are dedicated professionals who want to create a memorable classroom experience. You can voice pre-registration concerns to our CWL Success Coach. You are expected to meet the criteria for the course in order to earn a passing grade.

I need help on finding direction for my career choices.

The CWL Success Coach can assist you with interest inventories and provide current information on career trends. We are eager to help you find the best fit. Call 903-463-8765 to get started!

Can federal financial aid pay for CWL classes?

Unfortunately, financial aid CANNOT be utilized to cover payments for enrollment in CWL courses. Scholarships or alternate third-party funding is available for all workforce training programs dependent on eligibility. If a course leads to employment in an occupation found on Workforce Solutions Texoma’s (WST) Demand Occupation List, tuition funding from WST may be available. Call 903-4639997 for eligibility requirements. Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) also offers tuition assistance through Community Service Block Grants (CSBG) program. For more information on funding through TCOG, call 903-893-2161 ext. 3591.

Thirty-six year old Laquya Rivas had been thinking about coming to Grayson College to complete her high school diploma for a long time. Thinking about getting it done; thinking she wasn’t smart enough to be successful; thinking maybe it was too late. Yet her five children, mother and brother nudged her into adult education classes in September 2021, and Laquya hasn’t stopped since.

LAQUYA

R I V A S

Laquya dropped out of high school at age 15. Pregnant with her oldest daughter, who is now in Grayson College’s culinary program, Laquya didn’t have the support to continue high school. My daughter helped to push me. She told me I would want more, and I did!”

SBefore she could even graduate with her GED, Laquya was enrolled in Grayson College’s Patient Care Technician program with a full tuition and testing scholarship to boot. Like she did with her GED, Laquya aced her certification exams on the first try every time. By August 2022, less than 12 months after returning to school, Laquya had earned four healthcare certifications on top of her GED: EKG Technician; Phlebotomy Technician; Nurse Aide and Patient Care Technician. And she’s not stopping!

Laquya’s loading up on opportunity with grant-funded scholarships for training programs! Currently enrolled in the online Mental Health Technician program, she has her sights set on the Medical Billing and Coding program or the LVN program next.

“My kids took on responsibilities at home that weren't theirs so that I could go back to school. I’m proud of them. I didn’t think I could pull it off. I know now that I can do whatever I want to do,” beamed Laquya. “I would say that getting back out there is the hardest part. Once you ’ re there just stick to it, and you’ll get that feeling of accomplishment and want even more!”
