HANDCRAFTED CERAMICS since 1956

GRAYSHOTT POTTERY has been handcrafting exclusive, bespoke ceramics for 60 years. In fact, we’re one of the last working potteries in the South of England. We have an intriguing Emporium of handmade gifts. There’s an inspiring Studio Gallery which showcases the designs of our talented artists; you can even take a tour of the pottery exploring our heritage of producing commercial ceramics and giftware. Grayshott Social Club is regularly enjoyed by over 530 members and their guests who fortunately discovered it tucked away on Hill Road, just a short walk from the village centre. The Club has grown over the last 100 years or more to form the social hub of the local community, providing superb facilities and entertainment. Established in 1905 we are a member of the Club & Institutes Union and a registered Friendly Society. In 2016 the Club’s ‘community’ status was recognised by the Parish Council and the Club building and its lands added to the list of Grayshott Community Assets. The Club is open from 11.00am to 11.00pm, seven days a week, later at weekends and for events. We have many amenities for the use of members and guests – multiple screens showing BT Sport and Sky in HD, a pool table, two snooker tables, dartboards and an outside area. Our function Room is hireable for events for a small fee.

Grayshott Primary school pupils’ work Gold Class have begun to read Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The class have had a go at re-writing the first part of chapter one, in role as the main character, Michael. July 28 1988. I remember that date well. It was almost 10 years ago now. 10 years since I caused far more trouble than I’m worth. 10 years since I disappeared… And now that 10 years is over, I can finally begin to tell the true story; Kensuke’s story. I’ve lived a lie for so long; my family deserve better than that. But he made me promise I would wait. And I have. So here it is, from beginning to end. I was nearly 11 when the letter came. But my story begins a bit before that. Now I think about it, my old life seems so normal. Insignificant. Every day I’d wake up to my mum telling me to go to school. So I would. ‘Off to that monkey school then, eh monkey face?’ Dad would tease as I left the house. I was always monkey face when he was in a cheerful mood (which was often) and, in fairness, it was a bit like a school for animals. All those 4-12 year old kids gibbering and jabbering, hanging of the play-equipment and laughing. Of course, its real name was St Josephs; I was happy there. Even so, at the end of the day I would be tired and a bit fed up with it all. So when the bell rang Eddie Dodds, Matt, Bobby and I would be first out of the gates and first to the recreation ground for our many games of football. We (and a few others) called ourselves the Mudlarks, the one and only. We worked perfectly as a team; we were pretty good too. Our pitch was almost always covered in mud (hence our name) so when the other teams came to play us they all expected the ball to bounce and when they realised it didn’t, we would already be several goals up. But we weren’t so good away from home. And then there was my paper round. My first job. Not that I got paid much. I’m saving up for a mountain bike so I can ride with Eddie (my best friend) over the hill near St Josephs. But the problem with me is that I would keep spending what I’d saved - I’m still the same now.

Come to think of it, those few precious years are probably the ones that, given half the chance, I’d live again. Apart from the ones with Kensuke. Because, two weeks before my birthday, Eddie moved away. His family were ‘going down south’ he had said. Apparently his Father had found a fantastic job there. ‘More money, less hours’. After that things went down -hill pretty fast. First of all our football team sort-of disintegrated. Without Eddie, we were down a man and no one wanted to play on such a mucky pitch. But that wasn’t the worst of it. Oh-no…. I don’t think I’ve mentioned this but my parents work for a company called brickworks. Dad loves making, building and fixing things so he was a builder there. Mum, unlike dad, is calm and logical which is a great help when she’s working in the office. But that was all about to change…. The days before it came were all very dull, not that I’d change that. All very boring. School, football, paper-round. Until that letter. Who knew that an innocent looking piece of paper could affect our lives in the way it did? But it did. Once it landed on the mat, Stella was upon it; savaging it in every way possible. I wonder if she could have known what was in the envelope before we even opened it. Maybe. She knows a lot that dog. When we finally managed to get it off of her, it was punctured and covered with drool. Mum and Dad read it first but they only skimmed the first paragraph and after they’d finished they were pale and silent. I soon found out why. The brickworks where closing down. They had no jobs. I looked up in horror. Surely this couldn’t be happening? One look at mum told me everything I needed to know. By Bella Martin Aged 11 Gold Class

Can you help our local Kurdish Community? Over 500 people feared dead and thousands more injured by huge earthquake in border region between Iran and Iraq. According to one Iranian aid agency, at least 70,000 people now need immediate shelter as a direct result of the earthquake. The majority of these people were in Iran's Kurdish western Kermanshah province, with 4,000 estimated injured, and many killed. So ran the headline recently in much of the world's press ....so why do we cover it in ‘Grayshott Today’? Because we have our own Kurdish community here in Grayshott.

Freddie Safari runs a taxi service from the village and, with his wife Mandy, operates the barber shop next to Tanchoux. He and other Kurds in the area are raising funds to send to their home town which is in the heart of the devastation. His brother and a small team are working in the region - specifically taking provisions into the worst affected areas. This may well be just a drop in the ocean but as many of the afflicted people in the area are Kurdish they are getting limited support from the Iranian government and this small contribution is making a difference. Freddie's efforts are specifically aimed at trying to relieve Kurdish people in the area and today he appeals to us via Grayshott Today to help him make a more significant contribution. He and Mandy his wife have already sent £2,000 of their savings. Some of you will have seen Freddie make an appeal at St Luke's church after the Carols by Candlelight service when over £600 was collected. A collection box in his barber’s shop has raised £350 and a donation from the Grayshott primary school of £180 has resulted in a further total of £1,130 being sent just before Christmas. This money is being used by his brother and a small group of Kurdish friends to buy provisions, blankets etc in the less affected areas and transporting them into the stricken zone. By doing this they can be sure the help they bring goes precisely where it is needed. If you have not already made a donation then you may like to call at the barber's shop to donate cash or, if you prefer, you can transfer funds electronically by using the following bank data. THOUGHT for the MONTH THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH…... INTRODUCING ‘GRAYSHOTT TODAY’

As this is the last letter that I shall write as vicar, it is appropriate for me to use it to say mostly a big thank you to everyone in the village for making the 9 years we have spent here so enjoyable for Annie and me.

Grayshott is a special place. We want to thank our village shops which need to be loved and treasured. We want to thank the many clubs and activities that create community life. We want to thank our leaders on the Parish Council, District Council and County Council who really care for the well being of the village. We want to thank everyone for their neighbourliness, politeness, cleanliness, garden upkeep and mostly(!) reasonable driving. The community is further enhanced through the Social Club, the pub, the restaurants, this magazine and of course the church.

I wonder if I could also use this last letter to summarise why, even today, the church is such an important part of the community, and why personal faith remains such a great gift? Before I arrived the church wardens made a very significant decision - to put love at the heart of church life. Obvious you might think, but so often we become preoccupied with our own opinions and desires, forgetting our real purpose. This decision has borne great fruit at St. Luke’s. The nature of the God of the Bible as 3 persons in a community of love establishes love as the very foundation of all life. To be in connection with God resources anyone with the power of a love which comes from beyond themselves. When we are empty, we can be filled by God. When we are filled by God, we are able to sustain community, family life, marriage through all the challenges they present because, knowing we are loved and accepted, we are helped to admit our faults, find forgiveness and love again. Isn’t this what our world and our personal lives so badly need?

Grayshott will always be in our thoughts and prayers, and though we will try not to haunt the village, I expect you will see us from time to time. Not least in the month or so it will take us to move out! With enormous gratitude - Moray and Annie. 6

Recruiting a new Vicar The process The Parochial Church Council is responsible with the Diocese for recruiting a new vicar. The PCC’s main priorities are that: The Process is rooted in prayer and we appoint God’s person for the role. With this is mind we started the process by having regular prayer meetings, which started in July for those on the PCC and opened up to the whole Church from October 2017, these will continue until the new Vicar is appointed. The PCC are in the process of putting the Parish Profile together, this is the Key information document giving information about the village setting, church life, vision for the future where God wants us to go, values of the church, types of services, church finances, what we would like from the new vicar, what we can offer the new vicar etc. This document also includes photos The formal process involving the diocese is about to begin, this will involve meetings to discuss the finer points, finalise the parish profile, advert etc. Although we can have preliminary meetings with the diocese before Moray leaves, we cannot advertise or publish the profile until after his retirement date. The results from the survey which was open to all church members before Christmas will be used to help us finalise the Parish profile and also in the appointment process. So until Moray retires, we are doing all the foundation work, spending time in prayer, preparing for the formal process to begin at the beginning of March. After Moray retires, the formal process will begin with an advert being placed locally through the Diocese and nationally –probably in the Church Times. This will be followed by shortlisting followed by an interview and selection process which is likely to be over a couple of days and references will need to be taken up. To complete this cycle properly and ensure we appoint the right person 7 will take some time.

Grayshott’s History - Part 1 , The Pre-historic This is the first in a series of articles describing Grayshott’s history up to the 19th century. It’s a very long history because the land upon which Grayshott stands was formed over a hundred million years ago in the Cretaceous Period. The climate was warmer then, sea levels were higher and Grayshott was under a shallow lagoon. Sediment washed in by rivers became compacted to form our Lower Greensand bedrock. Dinosaurs such as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs swam in the warm water above, but sadly greensand doesn’t preserve fossils well so you’re unlikely to find one in your garden. However, the monkey puzzle tree in Whitmore Vale Road, opposite the churchyard, would have been a familiar type to huge pelorosaurs grazing on the nearby mainland. Movements of the Earth’s crust eventually pushed Grayshott up into a ridge, now called the Hindhead Anticline. When you travel along the B3002 you follow the eroded hinge of this anticline, the result of tectonic movements thirty million years ago. The glaciers didn’t reach Grayshott during the last Ice Age. Nevertheless for tens of thousands of years the climate was arctic, the land bound by permafrost and growing only tough grass and moss. Huge mammals such as mammoths, woolly rhinos, cave lion and hyenas wandered the landscape, and very occasionally bands of adventurous human hunters visited from the continent. One of them left a flint tool in Headley. A mammoth’s tooth has been dug up in Godalming, and their tusks in Farnham, but nothing so far in Grayshott. During the Mesolithic period, from about eleven to six thousand years ago, the climate warmed and the ice retreated. Southern Britain became covered by primary forest of birch, Scots pine and oak. This forest was less dense on the dry, infertile soil of our greensand hills, which created attractive conditions for mobile groups of hunter-gatherers to camp and hunt. Their flint tools have been found all around our area. Neolithic farmers began to clear the natural forest, although they seem to have preferred the open chalk downs to our greensand. A few tools have been found locally, but it seems that their owners left our ridge as forest in which to hunt, gather and harvest woodland materials. Photo right: One day, on Ludshott Common, a Neolithic archer missed his target and lost his arrow. Four-and-a-half thousand years later a walker found its beautifully worked flint head on the surface of a path.

History of Grayshott

[continued]

Agriculture intensified in the Bronze Age and farms spread up onto the greensand. The heaths around Grayshott originated in this period - the village is built upon land which was worked by farmers a few thousand years ago. Their cultivation caused the thin, dry soils to starve and the land reverted to pasture then rough grazing. The farmers also left their mark in the form of burial mounds in surrounding parishes, including Ludshott Common. A Bronze Age torc – a neck ornament – was found near Grayshott Hall and there are hints of prehistoric activity and perhaps a barrow cemetery towards the top of Waggoners Wells Lane. Iron Age remains have not yet been found in Grayshott. It’s thought that the high ground was used as summer grazing by villagers from the lowlands. Some of our old roads such as Hammer Lane evolved as driftways for moving livestock up onto the ridge. The northern stump of School Road, opposite the Pottery, is another ancient driftway. Roman occupation was all around – including a pottery at Alice Holt, a possible cemetery at Tilford and a shrine near Frensham Pond. Roman coins have been found in Grayshott, quite close together, perhaps indicating that they were not just a random loss. No definite evidence of Roman settlement has been found, but maybe so far nobody has looked hard enough in the right place…….

Photo right: These coins were found in Grayshott. On the left is a silver denarius of emperor Caligula, which was minted before the invasion of 43AD. The sestertius on the right was minted between 161 and 180AD. (Photo courtesy of PAS)

So keep a keen eye when you are walking or gardening – many people were in Grayshott before us and you might be the next lucky one to find their tools, jewellery or coins. Next time – Saxon Grayshott. This article is by John Childs of Grayshott Heritage. For more about Grayshott and its history visit www.grayshottheritage.com Copyright Grayshott Heritage 2018

Thank you Reverend Moray After nine years as the vicar of St Luke’s, Moray is retiring. I write this in appreciation of him, and his contribution to life in Grayshott. Within St Luke’s, Moray has built up the worshipping community, by encouraging both traditional and contemporary styles of worship. This has meant that people familiar with the traditional language of the Book of Common Prayer, Matins and Evensong, could continue to attend, while providing a contemporary morning service, with modern music, and a context into which families with children feel welcome. He has sung in the choir, and at Christmas many from the village attended a very special nine lessons and carols service, a mark of Moray’s commitment to the traditional services. Our all-age family service at 10.30 on the first Sunday of the month, when we use stories, metaphors and parables to convey the message, has grown significantly. Moray and the team preparing these services, also put on the Nativity, and Christingle services this year, which were wonderful family occasions, and there was standing room only at the Christingle service on Christmas eve. As a preacher, Moray’s focus is always off himself and on Jesus. He has always sought to help others to understand the message of the Bible, and has led the church through programmes of teaching that have challenged and grown the community. He has always sought to teach the grace of God, remembering our human frailty, and that the Gospel means ‘good news’. He has been a mentor and champion of others preaching, developing a very strong group of occasional preachers at St Luke’s, and he recently mentored some of our young people in a preaching competition run by Guildford Diocese, one of whom was runner-up. He has been a builder of teams. The strength and quality of the activities within the church, are testament to his gift for spotting complementary gifts in people and putting them together. He has built up the staff team to its present strength. Particularly, bringing in an ordained associate to broaden the pastoral ministry. As a strategic thinker he has established systems and a culture within the church that leave us in a good position to face the future. He ran a number of conferences to equip the congregation as a welcoming, open, community and kept us moving forwards. Moray has used his gifts as a chairman, and leader to serve the community in many different ways. He has been a passionate advocate of the village square events, culminating in the well attended carols in the square on Christmas eve. He has sought to act as a mediator, and wise counsel for some of the issues that the community has faced, and to support the many gifted people who give of their time to make Grayshott a wonderful place to live. He has worked with our political leaders to help to steer the community towards long-term solutions, whether it is housing, road safety, parking, or strategic planning for the future. His habit of putting prayer and scripture at the centre of all church business, has helped to keep our focus on being a community that exists to serve God first, and to fulfill the two new testament commandments of love God and love your neighbour. 12

Thank you Reverend Moray

contd.

Maintaining relationships with the local schools has been important to Moray, leading assemblies, especially supporting a programme called “Open the Book”, delivering curriculum approved Bible stories at Grayshott School for whom he has also been a governor. St Luke’s has hosted Christmas and Easter services for the schools. He was always a supporter and participant in the summer Holiday Clubs.

Moray leading action songs in the 2015 Holiday Club.

Some of you will know that Moray is a keen sportsman – especially Cricket and Golf, and will know of his dedication to excellence in whatever he does. He is a passionate Tottenham supporter, and follower of sports generally, and loves a sporting metaphor. He has played cricket for Grayshott, and the Church of England diocesan team, and through his golf and cricket has got to know a number of you round the village. In summary, Moray has been immersed in village life, giving his gifts and energies unstintingly to the church and community. Some of you will have seen him leading the community song in the Grayshott Easter Pantomime in various guises, once famously as a bride, sporting an unruly veil! On one occasion he arrived at a Grayshott concert in stage makeup, having come from a pantomime performance; he is taking part again this year.

In the 2012 ‘Aladdin’ from Grayshott Panto.

Thank you Moray and Annie, for all you have been and done in Grayshott, and we all hope that you have a wonderful and fulfilling retirement, and that you both enjoy your new home. 13

GRAYSHOTT PARISH COUNCIL’S PAGE Office - Grayshott Village Hall, Headley Road, Grayshott, Hindhead, Surrey GU26 6TZ Tel: 01428 606510 Email: grayshottpc@btconnect.com Office hours: Tuesdays & Thursdays 10.00am - 12.00noon Chairman Councillor John Frankcom Parish Clerk Laura Musco Assistant Clerk Katie Weir

Dates for your diary Our Annual Parish Assembly will be held on Friday 27th April 2018 in the Village Hall. It will take on the same format as last year, with local organisations invited to exhibit in the Small Hall from 6pm, until the Assembly starts at 8pm. The theme for this year’s Assembly will be ‘care in the community’. The Hunter Centre, in Haslemere, which cares for those with dementia and Grayshott Surgery have agreed to be our guest speakers. We are hoping that several organisations exhibiting will also be on this theme. Refreshments will be served from 6pm. Please come along to learn more from our speakers, and the local exhibitors. It is, of course, also the one opportunity in the year for you to ask anything of the Parish Council that you like, without it being on a meeting agenda. The Council has started planning what Grayshott might do to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. We are looking into the possibility of a ‘poppy field’ where, similar to those that were at the Tower of London, people can sponsor a poppy and then keep it after the event. Watch this space for more information. In the meantime do you have any knowledge about how Grayshott celebrated in 1918? We’d also be interested to hear if you have any ideas of what you would like to see, or do.

Another delicious recipe from Sophie. In February lots of wonderful vegetables are in the height of their season, and are well priced in the supermarket. People that have eaten well over the festive period (and have finished the edible gifts!) aim to eat healthily through the early part of the year, and feasting on some of the wonderful treats that nature has to offer will boost our digestive and immune systems with a plethora of vitamins and minerals that they hold. Greens such as kale, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks and broccoli all fall into the group of vegetables that offer a high yield of vitamins such as vitamin A, C and K, and in addition boast the benefits of iron, calcium and good dietary fibre too! The below recipe for Broccoli, Cauliflower & Gruyere Bake is a great way to add some of these vegetables to your diet, either as a side dish or with a slice of bread and butter as a meal in itself, delicious!

Broccoli, Cauliflower & Gruyere Bake Ingredients:

300g broccoli florets 300g cauliflower florets For the cheese sauce 1 litre milk 3 tbsp cornflour 1 teaspoon English mustard 150g Gruyere cheese 150g Cheddar cheese (plus extra cheese to sprinkle on the top!)

Method: Chop your broccoli and cauliflower into bite sized florets and steam for 2 minutes to soften, then place in the bottom of a baking dish Slowly warm the milk in a saucepan. Whilst warming mix the corn flour with 50ml of water and stir until loose, then add to the milk and stir continuously until thick and glossy (10 mins) Grate both types of cheese finely, then add to the white sauce along with 1 teaspoon of English mustard, and mix well until the cheese has melted Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli and cauliflower florets, sprinkle the top with a little additional cheese, and bake in the oven at 1800C for 30 minutes or until golden and bubbling, scrumptious!

Please feel free to ask Sophie any questions you may have. You can reach her on 01428 86 22 86 15 or email enquiries@thenaturalcookcompany.com

The Arts Society Grayshott Gustav Klimt – Focus of Controversy At our first meeting of 2018 Ann Clements gave us a brilliant exploration of the range of Klimt’s work and the evolution of his style.

Born in July 1862 into a relatively poor family, at 14 he went to the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. Ernst, his younger brother, also enrolled there and, working together with a friend, they received commissions and called themselves the ‘Company of Artists’. The mid C19th saw the construction of the Vienna Ringstrasse and an accompanying massive building programme of public buildings and private mansions. Thus offered a tremendous opportunity for artists. The ’Company’ painted two ceilings and staircases at the Burgtheatre to show the development of theatre from Ancient Greece to the C17th. In 1892 after his father and then Ernst died, he assumed responsibility for both families. His style changed as he reacted against the tradition of religious, historical and allegorical painting. At 35 he became the President of the Vienna Secession. It was so successful the government leased it land for a new building that critics dubbed ‘a gilded cabbage’! He painted an unconventional version of Pallas Athena, the group’s symbol. In this and Judith, probably inspired by his visits to Venice and the Ravenna mosaics, he used gold leaf. However, three paintings commissioned for the university caused such an outcry, Philosophy even being debated in parliament, they were not displayed and became his last public commission. He became Vienna’s most expensive artist. Never short of patrons, he accrued great wealth from his portraits. In many of his portraits the head is realistic but the body, often in silver and gold, is almost 2 dimensional. The Kiss, his bestknown work, is swamped by the heavy use of gold and mosaics. Later he would abandon gold and adopt brighter colours to emphasize texture. His landscapes fetch particularly high prices. Only 15 survive. Usually set in the foothills of the Austrian Alps, their high horizons and absence of figures emphasize stillness and peace. In 1919, recovering from a stroke, he died of flu.

He left no ‘School’. To some he was the ‘artist in a cul-de-sac’. Painting in a smock, sandals and no underwear, partly inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau and a love of Baroque, with a love of costume; he provoked scandal and admiration in equal proportions. A very private person, uninterested in self portrait, he advised ‘Whoever wants to know something about me….ought to look carefully at my pictures’. That is something we intend to do during our tour to Vienna later this year. At our next meeting on Thursday February 1, at 2pm in Grayshott Village Hall, Anthony Russell asks ‘Who was Tutankhamun?’ and discusses many of the fabulous finds. For more information please contact Caroline Young on 18 01428714276.

LUDSHOTT PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB The club meets at St Luke’s church rooms in Grayshott on the first and third Mondays of the month. Full details of our prog ramme and all the best images fro m recent competitions can be viewed at ludshottpc.org.uk. Your local contact is Diana Grant, 01428 713706. Visitor are most welcome to join us any evening for a very modest contribution to the club funds. Ludshott Photographic Club has enjoyed a very successful first half of its 2017/18 season with a great talk in November by Colleen Slater ARPS ATC on macro-photography. Ludshott P. C. has quite a few of members who are keen nature photographers, with several having success in regional competitions with images of insects and flowers. So Colleen’s very informative talk, illustrated with wonderful pictures and her detailed advice on how the shots were taken, was much appreciated. Personal favourites? For me it was Colleen’s less usual shots of seemingly unpromising subjects, such as ferns and mosses, that were inspirational. The remainder of 2017 saw the club competing in the Surrey Photographic Association’s annual print competition, in which we achieved a very creditable third overall in the Nature Class, but it would be best to draw a veil over our result in the Open Class. We also hosted a friendly inter-club completion against Midhurst Camera Club and visited Petersfield Photographic Society for a second inter-club competition. Honours were shared with Midhurst as they pipped us in the Club Class by a half-point, but Ludshott won by a good margin in the Advanced Class. Winning-ways continued at Petersfield with Ludshott taking the honours in both the print and projected image categories. Our new year programme kicked-off on 8th January with an absorbing talk by Ludshott P. C. member, Kathleen Bird LRPS CPAGB, on Game Parks of South Africa, which started with a rather depressing summary of the plight of African wildlife in general, but the mood was lifted by good news concerning the recovery of the white rhino. The remainder of the talk showed pictures from many of the reserves of southern Africa, interspersed with Kathleen’s much admired audio visual presentations, which combine commentary, music and images to capture the essence of reserves such as Kruger National Park. For the second half of the evening the “Snowdrop King of Greyshott”, Gordon Rae LRPS CPAGB, treated us to an absorbing talk entitled Return to Cuba. This contrasted the situation when Gordon first visited the island in the 1980s with the present using images from his first visit and those he took in 2017. Much of the talk concentrated on the wonderful architecture, the best of which is now being restored to its former glory, but Gordon also treated us to wonderful images of plants, the subject most dear to his heart. An up-coming event is a presentation on 5th February by Rory Cummings ARPS entitled Another World, Another View”. A highlight of the Club’s year will be the workshop on Saturday 24th March, 10am - 4pm, entitled How to Cheat at Photoshop, to be given by Steve Caplin, a best-selling author, freelance journalist, artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Steve is particularly famous for his photomontage work commissioned by newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The Independent, The Sunday Times Magazine and the Radio Times. He was so popular the last time he came to us that we have decided to invite him again. Tickets are available to non-members at a cost of £17.50. For more information or to book a ticket 19 send an e-mail to Ken Lindup at klindup@gmail.com.

GRAYSHOTT CONCERTS World Star Violinist Electrifies Grayshott Audience One of the world’s most spectacular violinists, Nicola Benedetti MBE, gave an astonishing display of musicianship, verve and dexterity to a packed St Luke’s Church on Wednesday 10th January. The concert crowns 10 years of attempts by Grayshott Concerts to persuade the international violin virtuoso to perform in the village.

“This superb artist performs all over the world to huge audiences in the iconic concert halls of every continent, so we’ve had to be patient. The performance of Brahms Violin Concerto, conducted by her long-time associate, Leonard Elschenbroich, was worth every second of our long wait. It was totally electrifying!” said artistic director, Vivien Harrison. The programme included Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Brahms Symphony No.1 in C minor. During the event’s four-hour afternoon rehearsal Miss Benedetti made time to meet a dozen youngsters from Grayshott (C of E) Primary School who were able to watch part of the concert preparations. “Fantastic!” they reported. Grayshott Concerts next concert, on Saturday 17 March 2018, features the work of composer Karl Jenkins, acknowledged as the world’s most performed living composer. Sir Karl, who is Patron of Grayshott Concerts, will conduct some of his favourite and most recent compositions. The programme will also include the popular ‘Stabat Mater’. General booking is now open on line at 21 www.grayshottconcerts.co.uk.

Bridge with Douglas Wright 3 Counties Bridge Beginners courses are run at Quinnettes in Churt every Wednesday at 7.00pm and Bourne Club Farnham every Thursday at 2 pm. Improver Courses on a Tuesday morning 9.30am in Arford. Improver Plus Courses, which help Duplicate players to improve their scores, are run at Churt Village Hall on alternate Wednesdays. Regular Bridge is played at Quinettes on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm and Thursday mornings at 9.45.The next Simultaneous Pairs is on Tuesday 13 March at Quinettes – all are welcome. For monthly day time friendly Bridge at Loxwood which includes a social lunch, contact Linda 01403 752 950 I have organized a fabulous weekend of Bridge with International Laura Porro at Balmer Lawn, a classic Country House Hotel set in the very heart of the New Forest National Park. Your bridge will improve as Douglas & Laura host a series of seminars aimed at social and duplicate players. Join us on the weekend of 23 February where the topic is advanced bidding techniques. There were some interesting hands during the British Winter Sim Pairs on Tuesday 9 January. The hands all come with an instructive written commentary which is what makes them so interesting and worthwhile. This is Board 12 with Dlr: West ♠ 94 High Card Points (HCP) evenly split 20/20. The Vul: N/S written commentary runs “West should open 1♠ at ♥ AQ53 every table. At some tables he will be left to play ♦ 1043 there, East having only a flat 5 HCP so being just ♣ A982 short of the requirements for a response, and South, if playing that a balanced 1NT starts at 11 HCP, ♠ KQ765 ♠ j83 being just short of one of those will pass. One spade ♥K ♥ 10 982 is a very comfortable spot and west you come to ♦ AQJ8 ♦ K76 overtrick for a handy +110.

♣10 53

♣ j74

If South balances with 1NT he will often play there and the fortunate position in hearts and clubs allows 8 tricks to be made. If South instead doubles, the heart position is not quite so helpful and 8 tricks are again the limit. If North’s response to the double is 3♥ the contract could fail. All is not lost however. If West leads a black suit, which looks normal, declarable wins in the south hand and leads a heart to the king and ace perhaps cash is the Q♥ just to be certain of the position, then plays out clubs, discarding a diamond from hand even if the East ruffs the fourth round. That gets rid of one loser on another loser, and the third round spade ruff leaves declarer with only two diamonds, one heart & one club to be lost making +140.”

♠ A10 2 ♥ J764 ♦ 952 ♣ KQ6

We teach in 3 Counties - Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex - with classes currently running in Haslemere, Farnham, Effingham, Churt, Milland, Midhurst. Is your Will out of date? Tax laws have changed. Many Trusts are not tax effective. 1. All wills written before April 2017 should be reviewed. The cost of NOT doing this could result in much bigger tax bills. Careful drafting ensures the new Residence Nil Rate Allowance will apply. • Over 50% of us will leave a substantial amount to the State. • Would you prefer your family to benefit? • If you die without a Will the tax take may be much higher. • A Will can ensure that you maximise your tax allowances. 2. Family needs may have changed over the years and your Will may need updating 3. If you have remarried owing to divorce or bereavement your spouse and your children need to be considered. (Marriage annuls a Will) 4. If you are in a long term unmarried relationship you should have an up to date Will. Cohabitants do not have automatic inheritance rights if there is no Will. 5. Have you considered how Care Fees could affect your estate?

Do you have Lasting Powers of Attorney ? Lasting Powers of Attorney are probably the best insurance you can have. If you are unable to act owing to illness or accident and do not have LPAs in place: • Even a joint bank account is frozen. • None of your savings or investments can be accessed. • The Local Authority may make decisions concerning your residence. If you appoint attorneys under an LPA:  They can act for your benefit.  They can pay your bills.  They can consult with doctors.  They can make decisions relating to where you live. These are important powers which are given to those you trust to protect you. We should all have LPA s in place. Shaws Wills 3 We use plain English. 3 We advise fixed fees in advance. 3 We listen to you and what you want to achieve. 3 We suggest the best ways to safeguard you, your assets, and your family. 3 We give free inheritance tax advice.

Please phone Susan Shaw now on 01428 712856.
