Banesco USA Expands into Broward County to Meet Growing Business Demand

As local banks grapple with skyrocketing loan demand fueled by the region’s rapid economic growth, Banesco USA, a Florida state-chartered bank with more than $4.75 billion in assets, is making a strategic move into Broward County. The leading community bank with seven locations between South Florida and Puerto Rico is deepening its footprint in the tri-county region with a strategic expansion into the Broward market, driven by a surge in demand for personalized consumer and commercial banking services.

The bank’s expansion into Broward County is designed to deliver innovative financial solutions to a dynamic market, blending international expertise with intimate local knowledge.

This move comes on the heels of Banesco’s successful expansion north into Palm Beach County in 2023 and reflects its ongoing commitment to serving Florida’s fast-growing business corridors.

“We see Broward as a high-growth market with tremendous opportunity for both consumers and businesses, and our expansion reflects our dedicated investment in this vibrant community,” said Calixto (Cali) Garcia-Velez, President and CEO of Banesco USA. “Our mission remains rooted in empowering communities through accessible financial services and this initiative is not merely a business expansion but a strategic effort to bolster financial inclusion and stimulate economic growth across Broward County.”

To lead the Broward expansion, Banesco has hired a four-person team of veteran bankers, led by Joshua Montagna, who now serves as Senior Vice President and Broward Market Executive. He brings nearly 20 years of experience in commercial banking and will focus on building strong relationships with local businesses and implementing strategies for sustainable market growth.

“We are excited to bring our expertise and innovative products to a community that is growing so rapidly,” said Montagna. “Our team lives and works here—we’re part of this community, and that gives us the insight and relationships needed to truly deliver for our clients.”

Joining Montagna are Kimberly Cagiano, Matthew Kronfeld, and Livan Ruiz, each of whom brings extensive experience in corporate and relationship banking. Collectively, they offer deep ties to the local business and civic community, with leadership roles in organizations such as ARC Broward, the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County, and Junior Achievement.

Garcia-Velez added, “With South Florida’s economy showing no signs of slowing, the bank is positioning itself as a key partner to businesses seeking both agility and expertise. By infusing fresh capital and advanced global banking practices into the region, our aim is to redefine the local financial services available to business owners in Broward County.”

The expansion comes at a time when South Florida banks are experiencing intensified demand for commercial and industrial (C&I) loans, with many business owners seeking more customized, relationship-driven financial solutions and a reliable bank partner with locally based leadership and certainty of execution. Over the past 12 months, C&I balances have shown a growth of 39.1%, reflecting the bank’s shift toward serving small and mid-sized businesses across a range of industries.

Through its commitment to innovation, personalized customer service, and community empowerment, Banesco is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of lending in Broward— providing much-needed alternatives and fostering growth opportunities for residents and businesses alike.

FIND YOUR CIRCLE, WHEREVER YOU LAND

Download the Les Amis app and find your friends.

In today’s hyper-connected world, loneliness can still creep in—especially if you’ve just arrived in a new city or spend most of your time working remotely. Anna Bilyich, a tech professional who once hopped from city to city chasing career opportunities, knows that feeling all too well. A er stints with major companies like PayPal and moves across continents, she found herself repeatedly starting from scratch—socially and professionally.

So Bilyich created the solution to her own problem: Les Amis — loosely translated, “Hey, friends!”— a community-led app designed to make meeting like-minded women in real life feel natural, not awkward. Launched with co-founder Oleg Pashinin (right) in 2022 and now active in eight European cities—including Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Stockholm and Amsterdam—the platform debuted in Austin, Texas, in April, with plans to expand to ve more American cities by the end of the year.

Here’s how it works: Members apply to join and build a pro le re ecting their interests and aspirations. Every week, the app suggests personal connections for one-onone meetups—be it a walk in the park, a co ee, or lunch. Users can also join curated group events ranging from pottery workshops to hiking outings. More than just a social network, Les Amis is quietly reshaping what adult friendship looks like—organic, intentional, and grounded in shared experiences. To learn more, visit lesamis.cc.

FOR THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

Prep your pets for Hurricane Season starting now.

“Hurricanes continue to become more destructive and a er last year’s deadly storms, many families were tragically separated from their beloved pets,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, CEO and President of the American Humane Society. “It’s imperative that you plan accordingly to protect your entire family – pets included.”

The American Humane Society o ers the following tips for preparing pets for the season, which runs June 1-November 30:

Before the Storm

• Microchip pets and put a tag on their collar with your name, address and cell number.

• Ensure you have emergency supplies — extra pet food, water and a carrier your pet can turn around and lie down in comfortably.

• Have a pet disaster preparedness kit ready, including a pet carrier, First Aid supplies, leashes, bowls, toys, food, meds and water (seven to 10 days’ worth).

During the Storm… If You Can’t Evacuate

• Choose a safe room for riding out the storm— an interior room without windows—and take your entire family there, including your pets.

• Keep your pets close to you during the storm.

• Keep your emergency kit in the room with you.

• Know your pets’ hiding places. That's where they may run.

• Do not tranquilize your pets. They will need their survival instincts should the storm require them.

REEL LIFE

Paragon Theaters is revolutionizing the modern cinema experience.

Co-founded by Michael Whalen and Michael Wilson, Paragon Theaters is reshaping the movie-going landscape with a bold, guest-centric approach that blends luxury with innovation. Their latest location in Deer eld Beach—one of three in Broward County—stands as a shining example of that concept.

“Movies come and go too quickly,” says Whalen. “People think, ‘We’ll just watch it on demand,’ and that hurts everyone, including the studios.” That’s why Paragon is all in on giving audiences a reason to venture out to the theater again. At the heart of this mission is the Lux Box VIP Dine-In experience, featuring zero-gravity recliners and app-based ordering, with treats like their signature MyPi pizza, made fresh from scratch.

But Paragon’s appeal extends beyond comfort food. The Axis15 Extreme Theater, a 66-foot-wide screen tilted at 15 degrees, uses 4K laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound to immerse viewers in cinematic brilliance. “We want to get people o their couch,” explains Wilson, with a laugh.

Rather than sprawling multiplexes with 20 screens, Paragon focuses on quality over quantity. “You don’t want to have 20

screens and 100,000 square feet and be paying $3 million in rent,” Whalen says. “Because of all that, a lot of theater companies don’t get to put money back into the theaters. They don’t get to invest in making the theaters better, like upgrading the seats, for example. They look rundown. So, we are in a sweet spot. Our theaters have six, seven, eight screens. Our lobbies our fresh and intimate feeling. And we have an o ering that’s compelling to the consumers amenities and price.”

With perks like $5 Tuesdays and a popular loyalty program, Paragon balances premium o erings with value. Their Florida locations feature a streamlined menu of crowd-pleasers—think chicken wings, ngers, and cra cocktails—tailored to what guests actually want.

Ultimately, Paragon Theaters is tapping into a deep sense of nostalgia while raising the bar for what a night at the movies can be. “There’s still a core audience that loves the theater experience,” says Whalen. Thanks to Paragon, that experience is now better than ever.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR

DON’T GET TO SPEND ENOUGH TIME WITH YOUR KIDS? WORK WITH THEM. THAT’S WHAT THESE DADS DO. HERE, THEY SHARE THE SECRETS OF DOING SO—WITH GREAT SUCCESS.

TOM ANGELO & KASSIDY ANGELO

“When the opportunity presented itself to open Daniel's in Fort Lauderdale, we happened to be at our favorite spot together, in the region of Puglia, where hospitality reigns supreme,” Tom recalls. “I presented the opportunity to Kassidy to create a brand and bring a world-class dining experience to Fort Lauderdale, the town where she grew up. She was working at J.P. Morgan at the time in the Private Bank, and after she gave it some thought, decided to see if we could make it work together.”

And make it work, they have. Daniel’s was just recognized as a Michelin-recommended restaurant and has had customers raving since it opened its doors. Behind the scenes, the two have mastered the art of working in harmony. “Kassidy keeps me on a very short leash!” Tom jokes, then adds, “In all seriousness, it is sometimes not easy, but we try to set boundaries, as there are lots of stresses incumbent to running the business.”

“I admire my dad's grit and the unwavering perseverance he's shown throughout his life,” Kassidy says. “It's both moving and motivating to witness the dedication and love he invests in our business, along with the countless sacrifices he's made for our family.”

Their partnership is going swimmingly: Next up, a Daniel's location in Coral Gables, in the space that formerly housed Fiola.

“Igrew up very involved in the industry—my father was Florida’s first Toyota dealer,” says Craig Zinn, founder of Craig Zinn Automotive Group. “In 1981, I took that foundation and started what is now our family business.” His son, Zachary, followed suit early on. “I started in the parts department at Acura of Pembroke Pines when I was in middle school,” Zachary recalls. “I always looked up to my dad and admired how much he devoted to the business and the community.”

From college studies in Automotive Marketing and Finance to an internship at Spyker in the Netherlands, Zachary was deliberate in his preparation. “It’s been important to me to understand every aspect of the business before stepping into leadership,” he says. Their father-son dynamic is rooted in mutual respect. “In the office,

we are colleagues who happen to be family,” says Craig. “That clarity allows us to make decisions based on what’s best for the company.”

Zachary adds, “We communicate often and keep our focus on shared goals.”

Craig’s formula for success starts by defining each other’s roles. “Let your kids earn their place and allow them the space to lead.” Zach adds, “Be intentional about the culture you want to build. For us, giving back is part of that. Through Subaru’s Share the Love program, we’ve donated more than $1.6 million to partners like Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, including funding an Animal-Assisted Therapy endowment. We also support the Humane Society of Broward County and host adoption events year-round. When your business reflects your values, success becomes about more than just numbers.

“IBILL FEINBERG & KARA FEINBERG

thinking about how we can support and strengthen our employees,” Kara says. “My dad’s usually juggling a bit of everything, while I focus more on marketing. We collaborate often on ads, social media content, and ideas for the website—it’s a creative rhythm we’ve developed together.”

remember going to work with my dad on ‘take your child to work’ days and I was always so excited to spend the day with him and see what he did,” Kara Feinberg Cohen fondly recalls. “I can say that what inspired me to work with my dad as I got older was that exact reason: a chance to spend every day together. I have had other jobs throughout the years and since I returned to Allied after taking some time off to have my kids, I feel that, professionally, I have learned the most from him.”

Their typical workday starts with a meeting to review the day’s priorities and job details. “We spend a lot of time coaching our team together and

But differences will up. “We’re both passionate and have strong ideas,” Kara says. “But my dad gives me a lot of freedom to explore my own path, which has been empowering and sparked a lot of creativity. At the same time, I never take for granted the wisdom he brings. I trust his perspective and genuinely value his feedback. It’s a balance, but one built on mutual respect.”

RAY CHEHATA AND DAVID & ANDREW CHEHATA

TRI-COUNTY SWEEPING SERVICES

“Our father’s always been an entrepreneur,” says David Chehata of his father, Ray, owner of Tri-County Services, which has been in business for more than 30 years. “Every business he had, he tried to incorporate us as best as he could so we could learn from a young age.” That early exposure shaped their path, but everything changed in 2020. “Ray was placed in a coma due to COVID and was on the brink of death,” Andrew recalls. “Once he woke up, it lit a spark in him. He wanted to reach his goal of teaching his kids business.”

In 2021, that vision became reality with the family’s acquisition of TriCounty. “He had the opportunity to reunite his boys and teach them

everything from his past experiences,” says David.

Balancing personal and professional lives comes naturally to the trio.

“We were always great at separating the two,” Andrew explains. “From a disagreement in a meeting to ‘see you later for dinner.’”

Their personalities complement each other. “Ray is the fighter,” says David. “David’s the voice of reason,” adds Ray. “And Andrew sees issues at face value.”

Their proudest moment? “Owning our building,” Andrew says. “Ray navigated the deal and guided us every step of the way.”

Ray’s rule remains clear: “Business is business and personal is personal. Never let one destroy the other.”

Julio and Andy’s teamwork started way back—"when I was just about 4 years old,” Andy says. “My father would teach me flair and I’d make appearances at his competitions. Later, I decided to dedicate myself to this profession, and we’ve been working together ever since the opening of Café La Trova.”

Today, Andy is his father’s “right hand man—in the morning, I help him with any emails or new projects, and in the evening, I run the bar so he can focus on being a host to the guests.”

Together, they have enjoyed stunning success—Café La Trova was ranked 13th on the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars List in 2024, the

only Florida bar to earn a spot that year—and overcome troubled times.

“The 2020 COVID Pandemic was one of the toughest challenges we’ve ever faced,” Andy says. “We were struck with the fear of the possibility of never opening again.” But they pivoted, starting a Happy Hour video series on Instagram where they would post a classic cocktail every day until they were able to open Café La Trova’s doors again.

“Working with family is tough — it is not for everybody,” Andy notes. “You will get tested, you will get demoralized, but you cannot give up. Once you understand that it’s all give and take and you learn to harmoniously work together, you will create a beautiful bond.”

THE CURATED LIFE OF Deborah Yager Fleming

“I’m an avid learner, always striving to improve and grow,” says Acqualina Resort & Residences CEO Deborah Yager Fleming. “Whether it’s listening to an audiobook like Beyond Entrepreneurship 2.0 during my commute or diving into a quick, high-impact summary on the Headway app, I make learning a daily habit. I’m a huge fan of Jim Collins; his work continues to inspire and guide my thinking around leadership and business strategy. The Headway app is a particularly useful tool in my toolkit. It provides concise, powerful summaries of top books, allowing me to absorb key insights quickly. In my role, I aim to strike a balance across several critical areas, strategy, emotional intelligence, employee recognition, technology e ciency, and delivering exceptional customer service. These pillars shape the way I lead and make decisions every day. At the end of the day, my only true talent is hard work, and I take great pride in that.”

Morning ritual: “My mornings are sacred—they set the tone for how I show up throughout the day. I start with exercise that energizes me and clears my mind. A erward, I fuel up with a green juice blended with two scoops of Vital Proteins collagen peptides, followed by two cups of strong co ee. It’s

my personal powerhouse combo. Whenever possible, I take time for a walk outdoors. There’s something grounding about connecting with nature, breathing in the fresh air, taking in the trees and blue sky. That simple ritual of being present outside, even brie y, brings clarity and calm before diving into a day lled with indoor meetings and fast-paced decisions.”

Workout that always makes you feel powerful: “Midweek, I prioritize balance and exibility with a Pilates or yoga session, both help me stay centered and strong. On weekends, I shi gears with a 45-minute spin class, followed by 15 minutes on the assisted chin dip machine to build upper body strength and maintain muscle tone. It’s a combination that keeps me aligned, and ready to take on whatever the week brings.”

Outside of your home, your happy place: “There’s nothing more ful lling than hearing a guest share how much they loved their stay at Acqualina— especially when they tell a ‘wow’ story about one of our team members who went above

and beyond to make their visit truly memorable. Those moments remind me why we do what we do, and they’re the heartbeat of our brand. My other happy place is traveling with my family. I especially cherish multigenerational trips. There’s something incredibly special about experiencing new places together, across generations, creating memories that last a lifetime.”

Shopping spot in South Florida: “I rst discovered Silvia Tcherassi while traveling in Colombia and instantly fell in love with her designs. Her boutique at Bal Harbour is a treasure. I especially admire her eveningwear, timeless, feminine, and full of personality. One standout piece for me is the Jazmin dress (le ), elegant and a perfect re ection of her signature style.

Bal Harbour Shops truly has everything I could ask for when it comes to luxury shopping. One of my go-to destinations is The Webster, a beautifully curated boutique that features a handpicked selection of top designer brands. It’s a must-visit for anyone who appreciates elevated fashion.”

Shopping spot anywhere else: “When I am in New York, I head to ME+EM. I am obsessed with their high-quality garments. They don’t use a middleman so there are no markups, making the clothes a ordable too. The styles are perfect for work as well as weekend leisure time.”

Can’t-live-without bag for travel or work: “I have two handbags I can’t live without each for very di erent reasons, yet they’re equally indispensable. For travel, my MZ Wallace bag is a true game-changer, lightweight, and big enough to even use as an overnight bag. Nothing compares to a Chanel Classic Handbag. It’s the ultimate icon and elevates any look, whether I’m heading to a meeting or an evening out.”

Prized possession: “A photo collection that includes a picture of my late sister at the beach with a gentle smile and her hair gracefully flowing that mirrors her natural and radiant spirit. Another favorite is a striking

photograph of my mother and her three sisters taken in the 1960s. Dressed in elegant white evening gowns, they each radiate beauty and grace.”

Causes that have your heart: “The I Have a Dream Miami Foundation, which empowers children from low-income areas to reach their educational and career goals by providing a long-term program of mentoring, tutoring, and tuition assistance for higher education. The Foundation guarantees the children’s academic tuition at a Florida state university for a four-year degree or an accredited trade school."

What’s still on your to-do list? “Barcelona (above). I have never been and plan to be there in May. I can’t wait to see the city and the vibrant culture, and architecture. I plan to soak up the awe-inspiring works of Gaudí and the lively streets of the Gothic Quarter.”

Motto you live by: “Where there is a will, there is a way.”

Ports Unknown

palpable buzz builds as a crowd gathers on the openair decks of Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend ship, eagerly awaiting a big announcement. We’ve just set sail from Athens, Greece, on the cruise line’s rst “President’s Mystery Cruise,” an eight-day voyage so secretive that even the cruise line’s own president on board has no idea where we’re headed. A er much playful teasing and build-up, the captain ceremoniously opens an envelope to reveal the long-awaited news. “Our rst port, with fantastic weather and rich, ancient culture,” he announces into the microphone, “is in Italy and it’s … Taranto!” The crowd erupts in cheers and applause, some even embracing strangers in shared excitement.

Italy wasn’t exactly on my cruise bingo card, and I had to immediately pull up a map to gure out where Taranto was — I’d never even heard of it. For months leading up to the mystery voyage, set to depart and return to Athens, Greece, I imagined myself sailing to whitewashed Greek islands or exotic Turkey. I had even strategized with fellow cruisers, using AI tools and online sleuthing methods to decipher the vague clues we were given before departure. As an uber-

planner who always battles FOMO, going with the ow was not easy for me, and I had to let go of any preconceived expectations, including the desirable Greek islands. What we did know is that the ports would stay true to Windstar’s ethos of going to o -the-beaten-path and smaller locales. The inspiration for the mystery cruise took root during a 2024 sailing in Tahiti, when unexpected cyclones forced a detour to the remote Marquesas Islands. Guests repeatedly commented that each day felt like a “mystery”—and the idea stuck. From that serendipitous experience, Windstar began shaping a rst-of-its-kind itinerary designed to reignite a spirit of adventure, especially for its devoted cruise base (about 80 percent of the cruisers on my ship had previously sailed with Windstar). “In today’s world, everything is planned. This cruise is the opposite,” Christopher Prelog, president of Windstar, tells me during the sailing. “This is where we challenge the norm. This cruise is not meant for the masses. If you want to go to the Greek Isles, we have a beautiful program there, and it’s breathtaking. This cruise is meant to surprise and excite you.”

A sheet with clues about our next destination awaited us in

The Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Taormina, Sicily. RIGHT: The beach in Reggio Calabria, Italy, another destination of the Mystery Cruise.
THE CRUISE LINE PRIDES ITSELF ON BEING THE “ANTI” MEGA-CRUISE EXPERIENCE. NO STUFFY BALLGOWNS AND SUITS ARE NEEDED

NIGHTS, AND CRUISERS CAN EAT WHERE AND WHEN THEY WANT DURING DINING HOURS AND WITH WHOM THEY WANT.

our cabin each day, with the mystery ports revealed 36 hours before arrival. A er each announcement, I’d scramble to change or stay with prebooked shore excursions that were previously listed with vague descriptions, from culturally enriching cooking classes to wine tastings and visits to historical sites. At our rst stop in Taranto, a coastal port in Puglia located at the heel of boot-shaped Italy and an inaugural port for Windstar, I zipped o on an excursion to Alberobello, where it felt like I’d been dropped into a fairytale gnome village.

The UNESCO site boasts the highest and most preserved collection of trulli, whitewashed huts with conical or domed roofs that date back to the 14th century. Rumor has it that the homes were cunningly cra ed of dry stone so they could be quickly dismantled when tax inspectors came around, then later rebuilt.

Another day, we arrived at a bucket-list port for me: Sicily’s Naxos Giardini, near Taormina, which is now tourist-famous thanks to the HBO Max hit show The ite Lotus. Our tour bus inched up winding roads to reach Taormina, dramatically perched on rocky cli s that survey the deep-blue Ionian Sea and Mount Etna blanketed in a cloudy mist. A er exploring the town’s grand dame—the ancient Greek Theatre, which o ers a glimpse into the town’s Greek origins—I spent hours wandering the old streets of Taormina, gawking at its tapestry of historical landmarks and stopping at several cafes for arancini, pizza and pasta. The smell of citrus wa s through the air, and lemons super-charge almost every product sold there, from culinary treats to clothing.

But the most treasured port of call for me was Reggio Calabria, where the town of Scilla romanced me with its mystical tales of sea monsters and charming historic district dotted with shing boats and houses built on the water’s edge. It’s another storybook spot that begs leisurely strolls through the cobblestone streets, past shops and narrow alleyways where cats lazily nap on doorsteps. I dropped into stores to pick up Calabrian chili oils as souvenirs and refreshed with a bergamot granita (Italian ice) by the sea. By this third port, the idea of going somewhere completely unplanned had suddenly settled into my soul, and I was embracing the spontaneity and unknown.

Our last port was unspoiled Kalamata, Greece, a gastronomic paradise located in the southern Peloponnese, which immediately stunned with its stark contrast of green mountains and turquoise waters. I skipped a formal tour and instead dug into the local food scene, perusing their weekend farmers’ market to sample meaty purple olives and scoop up aromatic herbs grown in the mountains. I also sought out a tiny familyowned restaurant in the historic district to indulge in a souvlaki pita topped with yogurt that I still dream about today. Pointing to Windstar’s ability to take their smaller ships go where the big boats can’t, we never saw another ship at any of our ports.

The cruise line also prides itself on being the “anti” megacruise experience, with a laidback, fun-loving spirit. No stu y ballgowns and suits are needed for dress-up nights, and

cruisers can eat where and when they want during dining hours and with whom they want. The Star Legend is an all-suite ship, with luxuries for people like me who cherish indulgences such as a walk-in closet, a bathtub, and an ample sitting room with a couch and chairs. With just over 300 people onboard, it was easy to nd a spare sun lounger on the deck and the ship never felt crowded. The bubbling hot tub connected to the glassy pool is a popular spot to sip an Aperol spritz (or three—it’s vacation, a er all).

The Star Legend’s dining options were better than many cruise ships than I’ve previously sailed on. There are numerous choices, including Amphora, the main dining room that impresses with glittering chandeliers, white cloth-draped tables and an elevated dinner menu that touts signature dishes created in partnership with the James Beard Foundation. My personal favorite was Candles, a romantic, glassy restaurant nestled on the back of the ship that wows with its views, particularly at sunset, and a high-brow menu centered around premium cuts of meat. But honestly, I

enjoyed the evenings when I was still in my swimsuit and coverup, casually posted on a couch on the deck to enjoy the bu et options.

While a mystery cruise is certainly not for everyone, most of the people on the inaugural cruise were already excited to the book the 2026 Mystery Cruise that begins and ends in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As proof that spontaneous travel is trending, Windstar reports the 2026 cruise was nearly sold out the week it was released. For me, the trip was a gentle reminder that travel doesn’t always need to be structured, and some of the most rewarding experiences came from exploring unexpected destinations I might never have chosen on my own.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. But rst, I have a meticulously planned Greek Islands adventure calling my name—color-coded itinerary and all. Windstar’s next Mystery Cruise departs on March 20, 2026, aboard the 224-guest Star Seeker, Windstar’s newest yacht, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

HORMONES AND HEART HEALTH?

UNDERSTANDING MELANOMA: IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL SKIN CHECKS

As a dermatologist, I cannot stress enough the importance of melanoma awareness and annual skin checks. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer that originates in the pigment-producing cells of the skin, can be deadly if not detected and treated early.

Heart disease remains the biggest killer in the world, including in the United States, claiming close to a million American lives every year. Obviously, many factors contribute the development of cardiovascular disease, but a major one that goes underappreciated — which we’ll explore here — is the link between various aspects of hormone health.

Specifically, we’ll discuss the role of four hormones in protecting the heart and blood vessels:

Melanoma often begins as an abnormal mole or lesion that changes in size, shape, or color. It can quickly metastasize to other parts of the body, making early detection crucial for successful treatment. This is where regular skin checks play a pivotal role. By conducting annual skin checks, dermatologists can identify suspicious moles or lesions that may be indicative of melanoma.

• Estrogen (the main female sex hormone) Estrogen protects the cardiovascular system through multiple complex mechanisms at the cellular and genetic level, including by increasing nitric oxide (NO) production and decreasing inflammation.

Prevention is key when it comes to melanoma. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays by using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds can help reduce your risk of developing melanoma. However, even with preventive measures, it’s essential to be proactive about your skin health by scheduling regular skin checks with a dermatologist.

• Testosterone (the male sex hormone) low testosterone is associated with increased heart disease risk, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in appropriate cases where a testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism) has been documented dramatically cuts down heart disease risk. Researchers have established a strong causal link between low testosterone in both men and women and heart disease.

During a skin check, a dermatologist will carefully examine your skin for any signs of melanoma or other skin abnormalities. Early detection through these routine examinations can save lives. If a suspicious mole or lesion is identified, further testing or a biopsy may be recommended.

• Thyroid hormones modulate every component of the cardiovascular system necessary for normal cardiovascular development and function.

• Cortisol (the “stress hormone”) As a result of chronic stress and high cortisol, several health issues can emerge — including impaired cardiovascular function and degradation of the heart and blood vessel structures. Increased total cortisol exposure is independently associated with atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries

In conclusion, melanoma awareness and annual skin checks are crucial in the fight against skin cancer. By staying informed about the warning signs of melanoma and prioritizing regular skin screenings, you can take control of your skin health and potentially prevent the advancement of this aggressive disease. Don’t wait until it’s too late – schedule your annual skin check today. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and protect your skin with sunblock.

REAL ESTATE PR TRENDS IN SOUTH FLORIDA’S WATERFRONT MARKET

Stacy Thiry, a mental health counselor at Florida-based Grow Therapy, shares the benefits of a staycation.

Is a staycation as beneficial as a vacation?

There’s a reason we crave travel. New places, new faces, unfamiliar sounds— they all disrupt our autopilot and invite us back into the moment. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, exploring a new city, or lying on a beach with your phone blissfully off, “getting away” can offer a kind of healing that talk therapy alone can’t always provide.

In what ways is travel helpful to our mental health? It calms our nervous systems to step away from chronic stress. It boosts our mood, thanks to increased exposure to sunlight and novelty. [We] see things differently by giving our minds space to breathe. And we reconnect with joy, something that’s easy to forget in the grind of daily life.

But let’s be honest, travel isn’t always doable. For many, it’s financially out of reach or just adds a different kind of stress. That’s where the underrated magic of a staycation comes in.

Staying home—or close to it—can be just as nourishing, without the logistical headache of airports, itineraries, or packing for unpredictable weather. The beauty of a staycation is that it invites simplicity and presence. No travel stress. No jet lag. Just you, slowing down on purpose. What makes it restorative is the intention behind it. Think of it like this: The goal isn’t to “do nothing.” It’s to do things that make you feel alive and grounded again.

So, how can we experience the benefits of traveling without actually going on a vacation?

You don’t have to climb Machu Picchu to feel wonder. In fact, awe is everywhere, and it’s one of the most powerful emotional resets we can access. Take a drive to a scenic overlook. Visit a museum you've never explored. Try kayaking on a nearby lake or lie on a picnic blanket at night and stargaze. Awe helps us feel small in a way that’s comforting—like the world is bigger than our worries, and somehow, that makes them easier to carry. Bottom line: you need a break (really). Whether it’s a getaway or a stay-close, giving yourself space to pause, breathe, and be a little less “on” is one of the kindest things you can do for your mental health. And you don’t need anyone’s permission to do it. The most important part isn’t the destination, it’s the intention behind the pause. So, this year, block that time off, make it a priority, and protect it like you would any other important appointment. Because the truth is, rest is the foundation of our wellness.
