That does not mean there’s nothing to do—on the contrary. Aside from our staples (the beach, the pool, the amazing restaurants, the festivals—you get the gist), there are plenty of ways to while away the dog days of summer that, let’s face it, most of the time we as residents don’t get to experience o en. While we’re busy working and tending to the daily routines of our lives, visitors are checking out the wonderful array of spas, museums, live concerts and plays and cocktail bars that we always intend to visit but somehow don’t nd the time to. Now’s the time. In case you’re stuck, we put together 50 reasons to stick around here this summer, from broad suggestions to speci c dates and times you’ll want to note on your calendar.

Last month, we brought you a round-up of fabulous staycation spots in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach counties. In this issue, we’re sharing more summer escape ideas, only this time we’ve put together a group of pet-friendly hotels where dogs are not just allowed, they are welcome— and, I daresay, catered to. Whether you’re roadtripping or ying, we’ve found spots that will treat your pup like the VIP they truly are.

And speaking of beloved pets: Gracing our cover is a man whose daily bike rides along Fort Lauderdale Beach with his golden doodle have made him an Instagram sensation. Ryan Reiter and Schuyler’s story is more than just viral content—it’s a testament to the power of connection, adventure, and a little saltwater therapy. Get to know their story on page 46.

FROM SADDLES TO SERVICE

Jackie Ducci was always meant to create the Human-Animal Alliance.

Jackie Ducci has always been an animal person—long before she could articulate what that meant. Raised on a farm in Connecticut, she was in the saddle by the age of 4. Horses, dogs, and a menagerie of other creatures formed the backdrop of her early life, providing companionship and quiet understanding during a childhood that was anything but easy.

“I struggled in school,” Jackie admits. “I was super introverted, anxious… the kind of kid that gets overlooked because I wasn’t loud or outspoken. I internalized that. It was hammered into me that I wasn’t smart or good enough.”

But when the school bell rang and she returned to her horses, the narrative shi ed. “They saved my self-esteem. I’d come home feeling broken, and then I’d be with my horse, and I’d feel like I was enough again.” With every ride, every connection formed with her animals, she reclaimed a sense of worth that human relationships had stripped away. Even in adulthood, that bond remained her constant. “Animals have always been my mirror,” she says. “Especially horses—when a human interacts with a horse, it’s like a metaphor for what’s going on in their life. It’s o en more e ective than talk therapy.” For Jackie, animals o ered something few people could: unconditional, uncomplicated love.

Her professional life took a very di erent path. A er college, Jackie fell into recruiting—a far cry from the paddocks and pastures of her youth. “It was never planned,” she explains, “but I stayed in it for 18 years.” She eventually launched her own rm, leading a nationwide team of ve. It was a successful chapter—productive, nancially rewarding— but something was missing.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many, Jackie found herself re-evaluating her path. “I got frustrated. I stepped away from the business and told myself I wanted to do something charitable. Not even a career pivot, really—just something meaningful.” That something became The Human-Animal Alliance, a nonpro t born from her lifelong belief in the transformative power of the bond

between people and animals.

Unlike many charities, the Alliance is run almost like a private foundation. “We raise money and brand it out to other animalrelated charities,” Jackie explains. “But what makes us unique is our vetting process. We go deep—really deep—so we know exactly how the money is being spent. We never cover overhead. That way, donors can be sure their contributions go directly to helping animals.”

That model has struck a chord with supporters—especially those disillusioned by vague promises and nancial ambiguity in the nonpro t world. Jackie is proud of what she’s built, though she’s quick to de ect attention from her personal wealth or success. “I invested well during my recruiting years, and I have ownership in a couple of businesses. But that’s not what I want to be known for. My image now is all about the charity work. That’s where my heart is.”

Her life today re ects that commitment. Jackie lives in Wellington, Florida, an equestrian haven where she continues to ride and train. She owns two horses: Wesley, a graceful dressage partner, and Teddy, a lively show jumper. And at home, two English bulldogs—Ralphie and Sadie—round out her beloved animal family. “They’re my little kids,” she says with a smile.

Jackie is also collaborating with an awardwinning documentary lmmaker to tell stories that highlight the healing, soulful connection between animals and people. “It’s going to take a year and a half to produce, but everything I do now, in one way or another, circles back to that bond.”

For Jackie Ducci, what began as a childhood refuge has become a lifelong mission. From horses that mended a wounded heart to a nonpro t making sure animals continue to do the same for others, her story is a testament to the simple, profound truth at the heart of The Human-Animal Alliance: sometimes, the purest love doesn’t come from people— it comes from paws, hooves, and hearts that don’t need words to heal. TO THE RESCUE

Tri County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton is a dedicated 100 % no kill, 501(c)(3) nonpro t shelter serving Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami Dade counties. Since its founding in 1997, it has saved well over 50,000 dogs and cats from euthanasia, providing shelter, medical care (including spay/ neuter, vaccines, microchipping), education programs, and even take in animals from high-need situations—from hoarding cases to ill-equipped high-kill shelters in Alabama. Recent rescues include pups with parasites and heartworm, as well as specialneeds dogs like "Winnie" the French bulldog.

A shining initiative is their new “Sunshine Cat Room” and patio, part of the “9 Lives for $9” adoption program for adult cats, helping match more feline friends with loving homes. TCAR relies entirely on donations, sponsors, volunteers, and thri shop revenues—never government funding. With frequent adoption events, community partnerships (like with Hooters), and a strong volunteer network, the rescue remains a beacon of compassion in South Florida. For more information or to donate to Tri County Animal Rescue, go to tricountyanimalrescue.com or visit 21287 Boca Rio Rd, Boca Raton.

Cruising Together

Ryan Reiter’s constant companion is the star of the show wherever they go—and he’s just fine with that. BY

LORI CAPULLO
PHOTOS BY LORENA CORA

If you spot a guy coasting down Las Olas Boulevard on his bike with a u y white dog perched like royalty in a custom carrier, odds are you’ve just seen one of South Florida’s most unexpected—and endearing— duos: Ryan Reiter, a U.S. Marine veteran turned public infrastructure advocate, and Schuyler, the four-legged diva who’s not just along for the ride; she is the ride.

Born in Los Angeles and raised between Dallas, Davenport, and eventually South Florida, Reiter has called Florida home since 1999. A proud graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, he went on to serve in the Marine Corps and work in local politics, including a stint as aide to Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca. Today, he’s the Vice President of Development for CORE Construction in Florida, a role that keeps him embedded in public service—albeit from a di erent angle.

“I work closely with municipalities and school districts to deliver critical infrastructure,” he explains. “It’s mission-driven work that blends strategy, service, and construction. That combination really lights me up.”

But while he’s helping to build city halls and schools, there’s another more playful, perfectly groomed force

keeping his own life in balance—Schuyler, his beloved dog of four years, named for the Schuyler Sisters of Hamilton fame. “I’m a history nerd, and I couldn’t pick just one,” he laughs.

The bond between them formed quickly—and deeply. Adopted during a transformative period in his life, Schuyler has been his con dante, adventure partner, and Instagram muse ever since. “She’s loving, loyal, and somehow always knows what I need,” he says. “She’s helped me through challenges, celebrated the wins, and made everyday moments just better.”

One of their most iconic routines? Bicycling together—Schuyler safely zipped into a pet carrier, ears blowing in the wind, a perfectly styled ponytail bobbing with every turn. It all started during the pandemic, when long walks turned into creative ways to stay active without tiring out a dog more suited for glamor than cardio.

“I saw other dog owners using carriers like the K9 Sport Sack and Little Chonk, and gured we’d give it a shot,” he says. “Now it’s our

HAVING A DOG LIKE SCHUYLER ISN’T JUST ABOUT COMPANIONSHIP,”
HE SAYS. “IT’S ABOUT CONNECTION. SHE’S THE FIRST TO KNOW WHEN I NEED A BREAK, OR WHEN IT’S TIME FOR AN ADVENTURE. SHE REMINDS ME TO ENJOY THE RIDE— LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY.

thing. We’re actually looking at upgrading to an e-bike with a sidecar. She deserves it. She expects it.”

Their shared adventures—beach days, kayaking excursions, brunch at Las Olas favorites, even parties at pet-friendly spots like The Wharf and Barkyard and Brews—have earned Schuyler quite the following on social media. With fluffy “booties,” a signature topknot, and a calm but sassy demeanor, she gets recognized more often than her human. “Everyone always asks, ‘Who cuts her hair?’” he laughs. “She’s definitely the star of the show.”

But for all the public cuteness, it’s the quieter moments that mean the most.

“Having a dog like Schuyler isn’t just about companionship,” he says. “It’s about connection. She’s the first to know when I need a break, or when it’s time for an adventure. She reminds me to enjoy the ride—literally and figuratively.”

Would he ever consider a second dog?

“Maybe,” he admits. “She’s really social. I think she’d love a buddy. But for now, it’s just the two of us. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

In a world where politics are polarized and life moves fast, Reiter has found something refreshingly grounding in his relationship with Schuyler: a daily reminder that joy can be found in small things: a bike ride, a snatched haircut, or the perfect sunset with your best friend riding shotgun.

Or, in Schuyler’s case, center stage.

Dogs aren’t left out: no begging is required for the new in-room Canine Cuisine menu that’s made with wholesome ingredients.

Pet Perks: Dogs up to 50 lbs. are allowed, and instead of a pet fee, there’s a QR code in rooms to make an optional donation to the Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Expect complimentary amenities like a pet bed, food and water bowls, a dog bandana, waste bags, and homemade treats.

TAKING “WORK” OUT OF NETWORKING - THE ART OF MAKING CONNECTIONS ON VACATION

Networking doesn’t always have to mean suits, business cards, and formalfeeling cocktail hours. Sometimes, the best connections happen when you’re barefoot on the beach, paddling at sunrise, or if you’re like me, trying not to throw your shoulder out on the pickleball court.

When the inevitable “So, what do you do?” comes up, be ready with a short, engaging answer that invites curiosity. Think of it like a teaser trailer, not a full resume readout. Short ‘n sweet.

4. Make it easy to stay in touch. If you click with someone, exchange contact info right away—AirDrop a

Summer vacation offers a golden opportunity to expand your circle in unexpected, meaningful ways. The key is doing it in a way that doesn’t feel like you’re bringing the buzzkill “work vibe” to the pool or the trail.

So how do you network without making it feel like, well, work?

Here’s my advice.

1. Be present and open. You don’t need to lead with “What do you do?” Instead, start with where you are. Whether you’re chatting with someone in the hot tub or sharing a trail with fellow hikers, lean into this moment. Ask about where they’re from, how they found this hidden gem, or the best local meal they’ve had. Let the conversation breathe—connection comes first, business can follow!

2. Read the room (or the beach). Not everyone wants to talk shop while on vacation, and that’s, of course, okay. Be mindful of energy. If someone seems enthusiastic about your work, great. If not, it’s enough to enjoy a good conversation and move on. You never know when or how that interaction might resurface. Don’t push.

3. Have a soft “elevator pitch.”

contact card, follow each other on LinkedIn or Instagram, or have a digital QR code business card (it’s 2025, people!). Then jot a note in your phone about what you talked about to jog your memory later.

5. Follow up when you’re home. Send a quick message referencing your shared experience. “So great talking to you after our hike in Aspen! Let’s stay in touch.” That’s all it takes to turn a friendly vacation chat into a lasting connection.

Summer is a mindset—and with the right approach, your next getaway might just be your best networking opportunity yet.

Tell us about your dog and what makes them special to you.

Kaya 5 is the larger one (Mama). Brie 2 is the smaller one, the runt of the litter. They put a smile on my face when I walk in the door. Brie will actually cry if she has not seen you in a while.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

I didn’t want a dog in the beginning; everything in my house is white and I am a neat freak. I travel a lot and a dog just sounded like a chore. About 4 years ago my partner David put me in the car and drove me to a breeder in Delray. All I could see was this white ball jumping…well, we le with Kaya. Everyone fell in love with Kaya, so they talked me into breeding her about 2 years ago, and she had 9 puppies. We kept Brie, being the underdog, and I am so glad we did.

Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?

Well, in 2016 I got a divorce from my ex-wife when I came out; it was a huge explosion. We had two young daughters that were wrapped up in it. The door was slammed shut between me and my daughters and still is today. When I look at Kaya and Brie, it’s like my daughters are here and back in my life. As wild as it sounds, Kaya and Brie and the exact same years apart as my daughters. There are times when it’s very emotional for me – Kaya and Brie help me get through it.

What are your dogs’ quirkiest habits or personality traits?

They both kiss you good night and lay their heads on the pillow.

Tell us about your dog and what makes them special to you.

Meet Benjii Lou, he is a mini Golden Doodle. He’s naturally a lover boy, shy from being born February 14th. He made his appearance a day later February 15th, 2022. While I manifested Benjii Lou, he was a surprise gi from all my friends and family. As I celebrated my 32nd birthday with a movie night under the stars, my friends and family paused the movie to then show me a slide show that was titled, “Meet your dog, Benjii.” They all gathered together to make my dreams come true! It was one of the most thoughtful and memorable gi s I’ve ever received.

How do you juggle your work or personal life with your dog?

I’m very fortunate to work from home; this allows me to spend more quality time with Benjii. I’ve had him since he was two months old. He quickly had to adapt to my lifestyle and the amount of balloons all around the house. Most dogs are scared of balloons, but for him he loves it…it’s like his own personal ball pit. He has his own position within the company as Benjii Lou the Assistant. Although he can’t come to every job with me, he does come on errands days making sure I check o everything on my list!

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Benjii Lou came into my life at the perfect time. I needed him more than he needed me. At a time where I felt lonely and wanted a companion and a bit more responsibility, Benjii entered my life. He has brought me so much peace, joy and so much endless love! From the moment he wakes up he’s naturally a lover to morning kisses and midday cuddles; he knows how to show you love! The amount of excitement he has when he sees me makes my heart so happy! It’s a love and connection that can not be replaced. He is my best friend and my son! He turns all my “no’s” into “yeses” with those big brown puppy eyes; I just can’t resist!

Tell us about your dog.

Patches, my 15-year-old Shih Tzu, is more than just a pet—he’s family, a constant companion, and the heart of my home. With his big, soulful eyes and the signature patch of gray fur that earned him his name, Patches has a gentle presence that has brought comfort and joy through every chapter of life.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

I adopted Patches from the Broward Humane Society when he was just 7 months old, a tiny ball of u with curious eyes and an uncertain past. He had been surrendered by a family that could no longer care for him, and though shy at rst, there was something about the way he leaned into my hand that told me we were meant to nd each other. Adopting him wasn’t just about giving him a second chance; it was about starting a lifelong friendship that would shape my heart in ways I never imagined.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

What’s most remarkable, though, is the comfort his presence brings. Patches has grown up with me—through career changes, life milestones, heartbreaks, and celebrations. His quiet companionship has been a steady thread through the chaos of life. He may be slowing down, a little grayer in his coat and takes longer naps in the sun, but his spirit remains as vibrant as ever. Fi een years with Patches have taught me the meaning of unconditional love, patience, and nding joy in small, quiet moments. He’s not just a pet— he’s my best friend, a little therapist in fur, and a reminder that some of the best things in life come with four paws, a wagging tail, and a beating heart.

Here are Mercedes and Star in front of their own custom closet lled with Gucchewi, Chewy Vuitton, Hairmes, Pawda, and Chewnel. We match every single day! Mercedes (le ) is a teacup Yorkie, and Star (right) is a Maltese. To me they’re not just dogs, they’re my fur babies. Whether they’re cuddled up or following me from room to room, they’re my little shadows with big hearts. They’re paws-itively perfect and make every day brighter and better.

How do you juggle your work or personal life with your dogs?

As a very busy Realtor with over $2.7 billion in sales, my days are packed with appointments, but Mercedes and Star are 2 paw-some assistants. They come to the o ce with me every day and even join me for some showings. We’re pretty much inseparable. On the rare occasion I have to be somewhere without them, I take comfort in knowing they’ve got each other. I have two dog beds in every room, but they still choose to curl up together in one. They’re the ulti-mutt best friends.

Share some memorable moments involving your dogs that you’ll never forget. Every day is a memory in the making, but I love when others see them for the adogable fashionistas they are! One unfurgettable time was during lming for my TV show; I was showing the building amenities, and the spa attendant literally took a bathrobe o a teddy bear because it was the perfect size for Mercedes! Another standout was the day I got my new Rolls Royce. The team went above and beyond by placing her in a mini matching Ghost just for Instagram pics. They woof to pose and you can see on their IGs @ YorkieFashionista and @PoshStar.

Tell us about your dog.

Amber is a rescued pit mix who looks tough but is really a big so ie. She’ll roll over for belly rubs and smother you with kisses the second you approach. She’s pure love wrapped in muscle and snores.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

Amber came from Big Dog Ranch, scared and curled up in her crate. My son reached in, and she slowly licked his hand. That was it—she was ours. Since then, she’s come out of her shell completely. Watching her go from timid to trusting has been one of the most rewarding parts of having her.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Amber nudges you for what she wants, then barks until you give in—I never last long ignoring her. She also humps pillows, but only when guests arrive, like her own funny way to say “hello.”

How do you juggle your work or personal life with your dog?

Working from home with Amber is easy— she naps at my feet, snoring on Zoom calls. Weekend trips are harder since nding care is tough and costly, but she’s worth it.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

My favorite rescue organization is the Big Dog Ranch. That’s where I got Amber from and my other dog Apollo who passed away this past November.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Amber’s biggest gi is her personality and companionship. She keeps me laughing; barking at absolutely nothing on walks, charging at me to play only to op down and do nothing. Life with her is never boring. She’s a constant reminder to enjoy the little, weird moments.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

In October 2024, the boys volunteered with the Humane Society of Broward County’s Reading Buddies program, where they read to adoptable dogs and cats. By Sunday of that week, I hadn’t stopped hearing about Sadie. A er a family birthday in Palm Beach Gardens, I drove straight to the shelter and as they say, the rest is history. Sadie has completed our family. She loves everyone - our friends, family, and neighbors. Her favorite activity is simply being with us.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

The Humane Society of Broward County. Community is one of my core values, and supporting this organization means a lot. It brought us Sadie and, years earlier, one of my wife’s childhood dogs. We’ve had wonderful experiences there as both volunteers and adopters.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Sadie always needs to be touching one of us, whether we’re on the couch or in bed, it soothes her (and puts us to sleep!). On walks, she snacks on grass like it’s a gourmet treat, which still surprises me.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Sadie brought healing and joy a er we lost our last dog in March 2023. Unlike him, who had a complicated bond with the boys, Sadie loved them from day one. She gets very excited to greet me at the door and is my constant shadow, whether I’m taking out the trash or folding laundry. Our bond is strong and special, and I’m thankful every day that the boys were “assigned” to Sadie during the Humane Society of Broward County’s Reading Buddies program.

This is Abby Rose my fourteen year old pug. She has developed many names over the years including Abbs, Ab-best, Abby Rosie and also, Mariposa. She is very very particular and does not interact with many other dogs. She prefers humans, especially humans who give her treats and massages. She loves turkey sticks the most. She also loves her panda bear stu ed animal. She sleeps with him—a deep sleep that includes loud snoring. Her rst panda bear stu ed animal was disintegrating a er 10 years so I had to search the internet to nd the exact same one and then wash him a few times to make him look older.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

I have had ve pugs in the course of my life and Abby by far is the most connected to me. She brings me so much joy and companionship. I take her everywhere I can. She used to travel a lot between New York City and Florida, but now we mainly stay in Florida as she is older and has gained a few pounds and doesn’t like to y as much.

Share a funny moment involving your dog that you will never forget.

A er Abby eats dinner in the late a ernoon, she stares me straight in the eye and starts barking and runs to her stairs at the foot of my bed. She commands me to get ready for bed. I tell her, “Abby, it isn’t time for bed yet.” Sometimes she persists and I nally give up and go to bed to watch TV as early as 6pm.

Athena is a 4-yr old Golden retriever, with a loving personality. She’s a part of our blended family of ve children, and what makes her special is she’s our 5th girl in the home. Yes, my husband and son are completely outnumbered by girls.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

We adopted Athena when she was 8 weeks old and brought her home the day a er, Christmas in 2020. She was our COVID baby and quickly acclimated to a house full of children, love, and a lot of noise. Over time Athena became one of the students being home schooled.

Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?

A few months before we brought Athena home, I had su ered a miscarriage going into my second trimester. This loss was devastating not just for me and my husband, but for our four children. The home that was once lled with laughter, fun, and noise became quiet, sad, and lled with grief. This was not an emotion we were used to navigating as a family. The loss of this baby had gutted our family. Athena’s loving and fun demeanor quickly took over our home and helped us all cope with the loss of our baby.

Kona is our 5-year-old mini-Australian labradoodle—and our very rst pet. My husband, our two sons, and I were all skeptical, but it was Covid, and we nally had time to take care of a puppy. Like many families at that time, we went for it! None of us had even held a dog before… and now we can’t imagine life without him.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

The beginning? Rough. Kona was all energy—biting ankles, peeing everywhere, hiding under the couch, and refusing walks. But we grew together and eventually settled into a routine. Now he’s the uno cial mayor of our neighborhood and fully in charge at home. He sleeps in our bed, climbs the furniture, and insists on being glued to someone at all times. No personal space, no favorites—just pure love for whoever’s closest.

Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?

Absolutely. Three years ago, we le Chicago and moved to Florida so I could become the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. It was a big transition for our whole family, but Kona was our constant. He seems to have a sixth sense for when someone is hurting or needs a hug. It’s hard to be sad when a giant teddy bear is sitting in your lap trying to lick you to death!

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Yogi Bear has brought a so ness to our busy world — a reminder to slow down, laugh more, and nd joy in the little things. As luxury real estate agents, our schedules can be unpredictable, but Bear keeps us grounded. His goofy personality, unconditional love, and warm presence have been a constant source of comfort. He turns even the most stressful days around with just one tail wag or snore. The greatest blessing? He’s shown us that success feels sweeter when you’re sharing it with someone who loves you just because you’re you.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

We’ve always been a doodle family, so when Yogi Bear came to us from Moss Creek, he instantly felt like home. From day one, he had a way of making everything more fun — running into walls, snoring like an old man, or opping dramatically across our heads at bedtime. Over time, he’s gone from “our dog” to “our everything.” We base our days around him, our dinners, even our drives (he always gets shotgun). The bond has only grown deeper, and so has our understanding that love doesn’t always come in words — sometimes it’s just a paw on your knee.

Tell us about your dog—name, breed, and what makes them special to you.

Yogi Bear is our 4-year-old goldendoodle and the absolute heart of our family. He’s equal parts gentle, oofy, and ridiculous — think: 30 rabbit toys, oversized seal plushies from HomeGoods, and a dramatic air for naps. What makes him so special isn’t just how adorable or hilarious he is — it’s the way he connects us. Whether he’s joining us on showings, curled up by our feet at the end of a long day, or charming the baristas out of pup cups, Bear is more than a pet. He’s our co-pilot, comic relief, and our daily dose of love.

Nitro is a COVID dog. Kip was lonely working from home, so we got her a playmate, Nitro. Although the spelling is slightly di erent, she is named a er the UCF mascot. Our son, his wife and our two grandsons suggested the name and we thought it was great. She is a Teddy Bear, which is a Shih tzu/Bijon mix. Nitro has completely changed our lives for the better. As a good friend once said to us, “Every home should have a dog.”

Memorable Moments

Nitro goes to doggy day care (Central Bark) four days a week and loves her time with her friends. In addition, she enjoys dining with us. Her favorite restaurants are Eddie V’s, where she has the Filet “Nitro” Sliders, Heritage, where she loves the meatballs, and

Camille’s Ristorante where chicken is her favorite. She seems to always know which nights she goes with us and which nights she’s not. Very happy when she is going and very sad when she stays home. VERY SMART!

Her favorite game is fetch. Although she has a dozen balls, she loves to push them under the wall unit and then motion to us to get THAT one even though she has many more. Not so easy for us to get down on the oor and retrieve them for her!

Juggling Work and Personal

Nitro moonlights as the Chief Barketing O cer at Kip Hunter Marketing. She loves her job and greeting clients. Our work schedules are somewhat exible so getting her to and from school generally works out.

Junior is an 11-year-old Black Labrador. Junior is our second Black Labrador, and is named a er our previous Labrador, Cosmo who lived till he was 14-years old. When we discovered Junior at the breeder, the resemblance was uncanny to our previous dog. While there is no relation, it seemed tting to name the second Labrador, Junior.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

Losing a pet is di cult. It takes time to heal, and you want to respect the memories and the space they occupied in your life. Raising a pet takes work, and while in most cases we think of the children in a family and how fun it would be to have a new puppy, ultimately, it is the adults in the room that end up caring for them the most. It was important that everybody felt ready a er the loss, and we got there. When I visited the breeder, I saw Junior and knew he was the one. Junior has become a staple in our orbit – as he goes, we go.

Share a memorable or funny moment involving your dog that you’ll never forget. 11 years one can accumulate many funny memories, but perhaps one of the more memorable moments is when I came home and found Junior with the garbage can lid around his head. He was laying on his bed, sad, ashamed, and had the evidence of his crime literally around his neck. A er months of working with him to stay out of the garbage, we thought we had it solved. Apparently, not so much. It was hard to discipline him a er we saw him, he’d been through enough. The humiliation seemed to be su cient punishment for us. A er that, he never did it again. So maybe embarrassment is a real training step a er all.

How Rosie came to me:

It’s one of those classic tales where resistance meets persistence—and persistence wins. A few of my family members had this fascination with English Bulldogs some 10 years ago. They thought having one would be hilarious and would help entertain our older Yellow Lab who was aging gracefully. I, however, was not convinced. They insisted. I resisted. Then one day, the doorbell rang, and there she was: a wrinkly, stubborn little meatball on my doorstep. Apparently, I’d been outvoted. From that moment on, she claimed her spot (mostly in my bed), and I had to admit—life was a lot more entertaining with her around. The rest is history.

What’s her quirkiest habit or trait?

Where to begin? She snores with her eyes open. It’s as if she’s some kind of half-asleep, half-keeping-an-eye-on-you trance. She also pants like she’s just run a marathon, even if she’s just waddled to her food bowl. And despite being built all wrong, she’s got the con dence of a show dog. She has a face only a mother could love—or at least that’s what one lady on the street thought when she saw her walking and sarcastically asked, “What happened to her face?” Yea, she’s quirky, but, come on…that face has personality!

How do I juggle my personal life with her?

It’s all about balance, or lack thereof. She’s a professional bed hog, so sharing space is more like giving up space. She’s my trusty sidekick at work and she takes her role as our “Director of Drool” very seriously. She loves coming to the o ce—probably more than some of the sta love having her there. I can’t help but notice that a few quietly leave the room when she arrives (are they trying to tell me something?). She’s not much of a barker, but she does leave behind a scent that o en prompts a candle-lighting ceremony. It’s kind of her signature move. She de nitely has her own fan club, though a few are still on the fence. I get it - she’s an acquired taste.

How do you juggle your personal life with your dog?

Since adopting Khaleesi, she has become my constant companion—whether I’m working at my computer, in the closet picking out an out t, or relaxing under the covers. Every day, she spins three times when I walk in the door—it never fails to make me laugh and reminds me how precious life is.

What is your favorite pet charity?

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is my favorite. I served on the committee that hosts their annual Mar-a-Lago fundraiser. They rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs and also train service dogs for veterans. Their work is life changing.

What’s one lesson your dog has taught you?

Unconditional love. Khaleesi is a rescue, and yet she trusts with her whole heart. Her late owner used to say, “She’s the queen,” and she truly is—the doggy queen who stole mine. No matter how hectic my day, she brings me back to what really matters.

It’s a bond unlike any other. She’s my constant companion, my shadow, and my greatest source of comfort. I o en joke that she is like an appendage, always happily by my side no matter what I’m doing. But truthfully, her devotion is one of the greatest gi s in my life, and I feel blessed and lucky to be her “mom.”

Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?

Absolutely. Sadie has been my rock through some of the hardest and most transformative times in my life – a health scare, a major career pivot, uprooting my life to move full-time to Florida, and the heartbreaking losses of several close family members and friends. Through every dark time and stressful moment, Sadie has been an unwavering pillar of support, providing love, grounding, and quiet strength. I cannot imagine having navigated those times without her.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

One organization very close to my heart is The Human-Animal Alliance, which I founded in 2022. It was inspired by my belief in the extraordinary power of animals to enrich, heal, and transform peoples’ lives. H-AA supports other nonpro ts across the country that promote human-animal connection in many ways, including keeping pets and people together, providing access to therapy animals for trauma survivors, reuniting pets and families a er natural disasters, and more. We also advocate for the importance – and bene ts – of a more pet-inclusive society.

Meet Petunia and Max, my Doberman kids. We call them the 2.0s, as they were preceded by Pirate and Coco, our rst set of Dobermans we rescued. When they went to heaven, we immediately rescued new family members. It is so incredibly hard to lose a fur-baby, however we have so much more love to give, and the ability to change more dogs’ lives. Dobermans are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and athleticism. They are also loving, Velcro-dogs, completely enamored with and connected to their owners.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

They are so “human-like”; they follow us around, swim in the pool (nicknamed Dober- sh), watch TV on the couch, and they like to get their big noses in just about any project. Max’s superpower

is to turn o the oven with his nose when I cook, and he is the biggest lapdog at 70 lbs. Petunia is the family security dog, and she takes this self-declared role very seriously.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

My favorite rescue organization is the Doberman Rescue League (DRL). They were founded in 1977, and they are dedicated to rescuing and rehoming this wonderful breed. DRL’s mission is to rescue, protect, and educate, providing care and expertise to place Dobermans in loving homes, and their sta are all volunteers. My ance, Marcel, and I started watching them 11 years ago and we not only rescued four dogs but also volunteered with DRL, because they are a local Fort Lauderdale rescue that helps our community and needs our support. Our 3 dogs are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels: Frasier (11), Augie (8) and Poppy (6). All three are rescues. Frasier and Augie are owner surrenders and Poppy was from a puppy mill breeder. They are special to us for many reasons. Despite their trauma, they are the sweetest and most loving creatures on the planet. They only want to give love and be loved. We’ve watched them blossom into trusting and loving dogs who are happy hanging out with us as we are with them. It’s hard to put into words how special it is to open your home to a dog who needs one. Each one comes with challenges, as most rescues haven’t received the attention they need, but if you can put aside the struggles and open your heart and home to one, there is true joy and a feeling of immense gratitude.

What is your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Frasier likes to chew very expensive shoes, and he can sni out a Choo or a Louboutin from a mile away. Augie likes to walk back and forth under the clothes hanging in the closet to scratch his back and Poppy is happiest sleeping on a pillow behind my head.

Favorite pet charity or rescue:

Then they go about the task of nding the right forever home for each dog based on best match. My dog’s name is Xena, and she’s a high-energy, loud, and lovable Shiba Inu. She’s also a proud rescue from Shiba Inu Rescue of Florida. True to her breed, she’s independent and bold, with a bark that could stop tra c—and she’s not afraid to use it! What makes Xena special is that underneath all that chaos is a ercely loyal companion with a huge heart. She’s the kind of dog who makes her presence known in the best way possible, and life wouldn’t be nearly as fun without her.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Xena has many quirks, but my favorite is that we stretch together every morning. The second I hit the mat, she jumps in—barking, twisting, and doing her own version of yoga. It’s like she’s coaching me through the session. It’s hilarious and one of my favorite parts of the day.

How do you juggle your work or personal life with your dog?

I balance work and life with Xena by bringing her to the o ce with me sometimes—she’s the o cial mascot of the Weinstein Legal

Team. On the days she’s there, she brings energy, laughter, and just the right amount of chaos. She strolls around like she owns the place—tail high, eyes scanning for unattended breakfasts or forgotten lunches. No snack is safe when Xena’s on patrol! Whether she’s barking at the printer, nudging someone for scratches or plotting her next snack heist, she keeps the entire team on their toes. Everyone loves her, even when she’s being her loud, crazy self.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

I will never forget my own rescue mission rescuing over 140 dogs a er Hurricane Katrina—when I needed help nding them homes, the Humane Society was there without hesitation and homed all the rescues within 48 hrs. I hope you will join me in supporting PAWS for the 2025-26 season as we have many incredible events planned to support the shelter.

A lot is in a name. How did you decide on your dog’s name?:

Luna is a 4-year-old miniature schnauzer who was named a er the two full moons in October 2020 that was an unusual happening. A harvest moon was the rst and a blue moon on Halloween was the second. Super rare for that to happen so the name seemed tting. Maybe that is why Luna is so mischievous!

How did your dog become part of your family?:

Luna came into our life at six weeks old as a companion for my mother a er my father had passed. We quickly realized that her puppy energy needed to be managed so I adopted her. Mom lives close so she visits her grand puppy whenever she needs a good dose of Luna love!

What does a day in the life of Luna look like?:

She may be small at 22 pounds, but she is erce. She is a protector of our home and of our family. She will hunt down iguanas and force

them into the waterway. She will chase raccoons up the Sylvester Palms without hesitation and she will keep the squirrels in line when they sneak on our turf out back. She is Gary’s nap time buddy and quite a talker when she sees something of interest. She loves the wind in her face while riding the waves on boat outings. She has become our NauticStar mascot.

What’s Luna’s gi to you?

Luna is a blessing to our family. We pour so much love into her and she gives it all back tenfold. She will make herself known to all that visit. She will glance in your eyes with her one-of-a-kind very long eyelashes that skirt her beautiful, big brown eyes. One gaze and she will make you feel loved and welcomed.

Life is better because Luna is a big personality and a lover of all.

Tell us about your dog:

This is Scout — my 3-year-old Chocolate Lab, named a er my favorite boat (not the Boy Scout). As a South Florida native who lives for boating and shing, I gured a ‘water dog’ was the perfect t. Plot twist: I adopted the only Lab who thinks swimming is a crime. He’ll politely dip a paw in the pool, then give me a look like I’ve betrayed him. Still, he’s my partner in crime — even if he prefers dry land. That said, I may be in the market for a new shing buddy who’s willing to get their paws wet.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Scout opens doors. Unlocks them, and opens them. He’s never met a door he can’t open, except for the re rgerator.

Tell us about your dog:

FurioGuiseppe is 8 months old. All of our animals have full human names, JoePesci passed last year at 17 years old, and AceRothstein past just recently at 18 years. I adopted FurioGuiseppe on a whim. Melanie and I were at a charity event for PAWS, supporting The Human Society of Broward County, and I just decided to adopt a puppy. A totally irrational decision, became an amazing venture I wouldn’t change for the world.

Memorable Moments:

Furio goes to doggy day care daily, travels back and forth with me to NYC on the weekends, and has the best of both worlds. He loves our cats, TommyTwoTimes, MoeGreene and DonFanucci, he loves all of the ducks and peacocks in our neighborhood and absolutely loves everyone around him!

Tell us about your dog, name, breed and what makes them special:

My dogs’ names are Tony and TJ. They are both Shih-Tzus.

What makes your dogs special to you?

My dogs are everything to me—they’re my heart, my soul, and the reason I keep moving forward every day. Without them, I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today. They are my constant source of strength, comfort, and joy. They don’t just ll my home with love—they are the very motor that keeps my life going. Their presence grounds me, inspires me, and gives my days meaning. They’re not just pets—they’re family, healers, and the truest companions I’ve ever known. They have always been there when the rest of the world has not. They are the light at the end of the tunnel.

How do you juggle your personal/work life with your dog.

The truth is, I don’t separate my life from my dogs—they’re woven into everything I do. As a pet photographer, they’re not only my inspiration but o en my assistants, muses, and even my models. Whether I’m editing photos late at night or scouting locations for a shoot, they’re always right there beside me. I make sure their needs are met before I even start my day, and in return, they give me a sense of peace and grounding that helps me stay focused and balanced. My work revolves around the love people have for their pets—and I live that love every single day with mine.

What is your favorite charity/pet organization? Why?

It’s impossible for me to choose just one. There are so many incredible dog rescues in South Florida doing life-saving work every single day, and I have deep admiration for all of them. My heart is with every organization that gives abandoned, neglected, or forgotten dogs a second chance. My dream is to be able to help them all—to use my photography to capture the souls of these amazing animals and help them nd the loving homes they deserve. If I could photograph every single adoptable dog in South Florida, I would. That’s where my heart truly is.

(Jess) How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

I was connected to Miami Animal Rescue through the Marlins’ Bark at the Park. A er following them for a while, I adopted Banjo in January—and from the moment we met, I knew he was meant to be mine. He’s not just a pet; he’s literally my son. Banjo’s goofy personality, loyalty, and love have brought so much joy into my life. He’s my sidekick, my comfort on hard days, and my favorite reason to stay home.

(Jess) What is your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

One of Banjo’s quirkiest traits is his dramatic hatred of the shower—and not just his own. The second he senses I’m about to take one, he launches a full-on rescue mission, grabbing my leg or ankle to stop me from getting in. It’s like he’s begging me to reconsider. It’s hilarious, weirdly sweet, and totally him. I’ve never met a dog more passionately opposed to showers— especially when they don’t involve him.

(Meg) How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

Olivia came into my life the way most great things do—unexpectedly and a bit messy. Starved, caged, and denied water, she had every reason to shut down. But her tough spirit won me over. She’s a Maltese who acts like a German Shepherd and quickly became my hiking buddy, shadow, and tiny bodyguard. Our bond wasn’t instant, but it’s unshakable.

(Meg) What is your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Olivia has zero chill. You can’t hold her—she’s constantly squirming like she’s late for something. Her weirdest habit? She hoards her favorite treats like gold. She’ll place them beside her in bed and guard them for days, sometimes even relocating them like a squirrel with anxiety. It’s absurd… and kind of genius.

WHO NEEDS REGULAR VITAMIN D?

HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA: A DERMATOLOGIST’S PERSPECTIVE

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin condition that affects the sweat glands and hair follicles in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, and buttocks. As a dermatologist, encountering patients with HS is not uncommon, but the impact it can have on their quality of life is significant.

Nurse

One of the key challenges of managing HS is its tendency to be misdiagnosed or overlooked due to its resemblance to other skin conditions like boils or acne. This underscores the importance of a thorough examination and medical history review to provide an accurate diagnosis.

Most people. Many doctors dismiss supplements. They are not educated in them. Nor use them. Most docs diss vitamins, minerals and even Vitamin D. While long term use of many medications and their scary adverse effects may not be discussed with the patient, long term use of SSRIs (some antidepressants) are linked to more fatal heart disease, hair loss, fatigue. Long term use of some Finasteride products for hair treatments is now linked to persistent neurological, sexual, and psychological effects. Long term statins for high cholesterol are linked to higher blood sugars and worse cognition. PPI acid blockers (such as Prilosec or Omeprazole) are linked to nutrient insufficiency, brain fog and even renal damage. But many docs often don’t mention any of this, while they bad mouth nutraceuticals! The most famous common line, “You are throwing your money away. You’re making expensive toilet water.” Yet, they keep pushing drugs. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Many growing studies continue to prove the benefit of nutritional supplementation. Vitamin D gives strength to lower limbs. Vitamin D protects our brain. Vitamin D protects against Alzheimer’s disease. In yet another study, a prospective cohort study run on 12,388 participants from the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center dataset, Vitamin D exposure was associated with 40% lower dementia incidence versus no Vitamin D.

Treatment of HS requires a multi-faceted approach tailored to each individual. Topical and oral medications can help alleviate symptoms and prevent flare-ups, while more severe cases may require procedures such as draining abscesses or surgical interventions. Lifestyle modifications, including weight management and smoking cessation, are also crucial in managing HS effectively.

From a dermatologist’s perspective, patient education is paramount in HS management. Empowering patients with knowledge about their condition, triggers, and treatment options can improve adherence and outcomes. Providing a supportive and understanding environment is also essential, as HS can take a toll on patients’ mental health and self-esteem. Research and awareness about HS are growing, shedding light on potential new treatment modalities and improving quality of life for those affected. As dermatologists, our role is not only to treat the physical symptoms of HS but also to address the emotional and psychological impact it can have on our patients.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning you don’t urinate out the extra if you are taking too much (like the B vitamins). That is why you should test your vitamin D level annually. Like many things, you don’t want too little, and you don’t want too much.

Buying quality nutrients does keep you healthier, no matter what uninformed folks say. Check out the line of supplements at LowTEFlorida.com/shop.

In conclusion, Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a challenging condition that requires a holistic approach to management. By staying informed, advocating for our patients, and offering comprehensive care, dermatologists can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Compassion

drives Patricia & Paulina Lara, mother-and-daughter founders of Wonder Paws

You’ve saved over 2,000 animals so far. Do you remember the very first pet you rescued together, and how did that moment shape Wonder Paws?

Our very first rescue was a cat named Simba. A friend found him on the highway, and Paulina secretly brought him home and everything changed after that. He turned a family of dog lovers into full-blown cat people and opened our eyes to the overwhelming cat overpopulation crisis in South Florida. We started by rescuing and rehoming kittens that friends would find, then began bottle-feeding neonatal kittens for the county shelter. As time went by, we realized that in order to make critical care decisions for our foster animals, we needed to have our own rescue. Before we knew it, we had a small but amazing team of animal lovers behind us and that is how Wonder Paws Rescue began.

What’s one thing the average person doesn’t know about kill shelters that you wish everyone understood?

Many people don’t realize how overwhelmed South Florida’s kill shelters are. With high intake rates, limited funding, and crowded spaces, these shelters often face heartbreaking choices every day. Despite the challenges, they work hard to provide essential services to the community like low-cost vaccinations, spay and neuter programs, and lost/found pet support resources. It’s not about blaming the staff, it’s about recognizing the need for more community support through fostering, adopting, donating, and spreading the word to help save lives.

What’s your dream for Wonder Paws’ future?

Our dream for Wonder Paws is for it to grow into a trusted, full-service nonprofit animal hospital that serves as a cornerstone of the community. We want to continue expanding access to affordable, high-quality veterinary care so that no pet has to suffer just because their family can’t afford treatment. We also envision an adoption and volunteer center where people can come together to give animals a second chance.

What are some ways those reading this can help your cause, other than adopting animals?

There are so many ways to help beyond adopting. Fostering, even short term, saves lives. Donations go a long way by helping us cover vet bills, buy supplies, and rescue more animals in need. Volunteering your time or helping with transports is always appreciated. Even following and sharing our posts helps us reach more adopters and supporters. You can also host a fundraiser such as a bake sale, birthday donation, or get your workplace involved through corporate giving. You don’t have to adopt to save a life, you just have to care.

Nicklaus Children’s is a trusted leader in pediatric care, serving families across South Florida and beyond. With seven locations throughout Broward County — and more on the way — we’re committed to making world-class pediatric care more accessible than ever.

Our newest location is opening soon in Davie. Right in your neighborhood, you’ll have access to our board-certified pediatric specialists in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, and Spine & Scoliosis, along with the exceptional care you expect from Nicklaus Children’s.
