We Are St Pauli On Sea

We are Southend based FC St.Pauli supporters group dedicated to inclusivity, equality, standing against all forms of fascism and discrimination. We play a bit too, organising football matches and tournaments to benefit charities and causes close to our hearts and within the St.Pauli ethos. Why FC St Pauli? St.Pauli is far more than a football club; it really is a way of life. The club shines a spotlight on social and political issues and takes a stand against fascism and discrimination. This culture and belief structure is engrained in the club and the very walls of the Millerntor Stadion! This has led to many likeminded individuals and groups following the “Kiezkicker” and the creation of hundreds of registered Fanclubs across the world and we are proud to be among them. We travel to Sankt Pauli matches home and away throughout the year and have also had the honour of playing on the Millerntor pitch as the club hosts a supporters club tournament in the stadium each year. A fantastic event which brings St.Pauli supporting groups together and we love heading over to Hamburg to take part and catch up with friends we’ve made across the world in the 3 years we’ve been a part of this incredible community!

grassroots magazine 4

We are becoming well known locally for the fundraising projects, we’ve been involved in too as we play regular 11 a side football matches and we have our own unique football shirts designed and produced by the brilliant: Kit and Bone of which we have sold over 350 globally with a percentage of each sale going to charities such as: Football Vs Homophobia, Love Football, Hate Racism, Refugee Action and Fans Supporting Southend Foodbanks.

We typically play different teams at different points across the year but every 6 months we play against fellow Southend based charity side: The Farke Knights for the Southend Community Cup raising much needed funds for Southend Foodbanks. We also stage our own annual event: Punkpokal to benefit Southend Foodbanks. For this year’s event, taking place on Saturday September 16th, we’ve teamed up with Southend based independent record label: Cool Thing Records for a day of football and music! The day will start with an 11 a side football match between St.PauliOn-Sea and Cool Thing United at Southend On Sea & EMT Cricket Club, Southchurch Park, Southend and will conclude with a live music event at Twenty One on Southend seafront featuring performances from incredible Cool Thing artists: Teleforme, Outcries, Admissions & Thomas Prescott of Suspects! The whole day is free to attend but donations are very much welcome.

KitAid

‘Its more than Just a shirt …’

KitAid is national charity, in its 25th Anniversary Year, dedicated to finding a new home for your unwanted kit & equipment in areas of the world where football is loved, but participation is held back by a lack of access to kit & equipment. KitAid works with projects supporting some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable communities in the worldprojects supporting education, skills training and those seeking to prevent harm. We know the power of football and its force for good in people’s lives and hence the strapline – ‘It’s more than Just a Shirt

…’

We report here on KitAid’s success in reaching the target for sharing 1 million items of kit & equipment and its fundraising efforts this year with the Great KitAid Road Trip visiting 25 grounds in Essex and photographing the KitAid banner.

grassroots magazine 10

Reaching 1 million is huge. A huge milestone reached this month, for a charity based exclusively on volunteers and your goodwill sorting & organising kit donations.

KitAid is a charity first brought into being by Derrick Williams, MBE after a chance encounter with a Tanzanian child wearing a worn-out Liverpool shirt, whilst Derrick was visiting a water project in the country. Derrick recognised in that child & the community a love for the game, but there was a serious lack of resources for kit & equipment to support their active participation in the game. So, Derrick returned to the UK and organised, with his friends, to get their own personal collection of kits together and to send them out to Tanzania.

Well from that first encounter and the first box of kit sent out, 25 years later, Derrick has overseen over 1 million donations of unwanted kit & equipment shared with communities across around 90 countries.

Clubs across Essex make a priceless contribution to the life of local communities, at every age group, across men & women, boys & girls. The Road Trip has also introduced us to the joy that is the growing success of Soccability across the County. Throughout, the drive and passion of Committee Members, Managers, Coaches, Players & Supporters has been inspirational.

Fundraising, Promotion & Kit Collections

The Road Trip has so far delivered much needed funds. The JustGiving site remains open for the rest of the year, for those who can help.

Direct to KitAid £250 kitaidcharity@gmail.com

It is the toughest time financially for us all and so many important causes to support. So, it has been humbling to receive such generous support and promotion for KitAid from across individuals and local Clubs.

Going the Extra Mile

So many people & Clubs have gone the extra mile to help. You know who you are and how grateful KitAid is for your support over the years and, in this year in particular, support on the Great KitAid Road Trip. But we must pick out:

All those clubs that have provided extensive social media promotion, including Colchester United generating over 11k 'X' hits; Runwell Sports, making an amazingly generous £200 donation, direct to KitAid, as well as taking a KitAid banner to display at the ground; Heybridge Swifts covering the work of KitAid in their match day programme.

There were some great games too on the Trip, including: Aveley back from 0-2 down to win 4-2 as a pre-season prelude to their Charity Cup Final win and strong start to life in the National League South, Barnston taking their first 3pts of the season 2-1, Corinthian Ladies winning 5-1 under the lights pre-season, Heybridge Swifts winning 5-1 in what has been a strong start to their Isthmian North campaign, Old Parkonians 5 goals bagged by striker Issa including two worldies on Coronation Day, Witham Town committed to the end, getting back to 1-1 in the final minutes.

grassroots magazine 13

Significant kit contributions have also come in from Bowers & Pitsea, Broomfield, Frinton & Walton YFC, Hullbridge, Old Parkonians, Old Southendians, Runwell Sports, South Woodham Ferrers United, Tollesbury YFC, Wilvale Rangers, Wivenhoe Town. Yet there is more to come, as others are organising their own kit contributions too – a big job, but much appreciated.

You can follow future developments on the Road Trip at a dedicated account: twitter/X @Trip2023E

So Much Remains to be Done

The 2023 Road Trip, maybe about to ‘park up’ but there remains so much still to do. You know too well the difference the gift of a football kit & equipment can make, magnify that 10-fold & you see the power of your unwanted kit contribution can make to ‘spreading smiles worldwide for the love of the game.’

If you can, please:

• Donate money to Barrie Neal is fundraising for KitAid (justgiving.com) to back KitAid’s work

• Donate unwanted kit & equipment – email KitAid at kitaidcharity@gmail.com or locally barrie.2014@yahoo.co.uk

• Consider advertising KitAid at your ground, in your programme or on social media

If anything else occurs to you, with which you can help, please contact us with your ideas for improving our reach and effectiveness across Essex & the Eastern Region.

Football Fitness Club

Established in 2019, Football Fitness Club was formed by two former teammates that had recently retired from the Sunday League game having created a successful Management partnership.

After taking a short break, both missed getting out of the house to train with the lads, so the idea of Football Fitness Club was born. The initial idea was to create a training club for those that had retired from the game, to help players maintain their fitness levels. They quickly realised that the sessions attracted players of all ages & abilities so both decided that they would start taking the FA coaching courses. With the number of players increasing weekly, FFC added another 3 coaches 1 of which had fitness qualifications, they also added equipment so that the sessions could include a range of drills for fitness, agility & games.

With the Pandemic forcing FFC to stop for a while planned sessions were created so they were ready to start up again as soon as possible. A partnership was also established with Mates Mental Health support group who they put on weekly sessions for. This was a great success, so Mates FC was formed & the coaching team helped them complete an unbeaten maiden season.

Football Fitness Club run training sessions every Thursday in Chelmsford.

MATCHFIT

HELPS YOU TO BECOME QUICKER AT TURNING

26

HOW TO BECOME QUICKER AT TURNING

In football, rotation is a movement which helps you to turn quickly and make speedy changes of direction. The muscles in your legs are largely responsible for the rapid decelerations and accelerations needed to make a quick turn, but training the muscles involved in rotating your torso will help to make those turns even more efficient.

ROTATIONAL EXERCISES

Any movements which are commonly used on the pitch should be mimicked in your training to ensure that the muscles directly involved in these key actions are developed in terms of strength and power to make them as efficient and effective as possible.

Compared to sports such as tennis, footballers have less emphasis on making rotational work a big part of their training schedule, but it can be a useful to include it.

CABLE MACHINE:

A good example of a rotational exercise using a cable machine is the wood chop:

• Stand sideways on to a cable machine

• Hold the handle (set at waist height) in both hands at arm’s length in front of you

• Keeping a slight bend in your knees, rotate to the side (away from the machine)

• Control the weight on the way back and repeat the rotation without letting the weights rest

• Aim for 8-10 reps and then repeat the exercise on the other side

This exercise can also be performed with the cable set in a high position and then moved from a high to low position whilst rotating, or it can be set in a low position to then rotate from low to high. An alternative to the cable machine is to use a fixed resistance band. The weight or resistance used should be light enough to allow smooth rotational movement at a controlled pace whilst standing at a distance which always keeps tension on the band.

MEDICINE BALL:

Medicine ball exercises can be considered more advanced and more explosive rotational exercises. Any exercise performed using a medicine ball should always be as explosive as possible, with the aim being to throw or move the ball with as much power as possible.

For this reason, it’s important to start with a light ball and to keep the exercises simple. Even athletes such as tennis players who place heavy emphasis on rotational training exercises will keep the weight of a medicine ball light, so most footballers will only need 1kg up to 3kgs to benefit from this type of training.

27

A good starting point is the half-kneeling medicine ball throw:

• Face a wall, or work with a partner who can catch the ball

• To throw to your left, position yourself with your right knee on the floor and your left foot out in front with a bent knee (just as you would in a half-kneeling hip flexor stretch)

• Hold the medicine ball in both hands, rotate to the right and then throw the ball to the wall or a partner as explosively as possible, keeping your lower half steady as you rotate both ways

• Complete 3 to 5 reps on each side for 2 to 3 sets

To progress from the half-kneeling throw, you would simply move to a standing throw. Place your feet side by side and maintain a slight bend in your knees (athletic position) as you rotate away from the wall and then return in a fast, powerful rotation to throw the ball as hard as you can.

The standing throw can then be advanced to a more reactive exercise, but only after working on the above exercises and developing enough power to throw a medicine ball of 2kg to 3kgs forcefully.

• Get a partner to throw the ball at you from the direction you want to throw in (if you want to throw the ball to your left, get someone to throw it at you from the left)

• As you catch it, shift most of your weight onto the other leg (right leg if the ball is coming from the left) and then powerfully return the ball in an explosive throw In summary, rotation exercises can effectively be split into two categories:

1. Control and Strength: Woodchops fall into this category and as such they can be done towards the end of a gym session when you’re doing trunk stability.

2. Power: Medicine ball exercises fall into this category and as with all power exercises (e.g. plyometric exercises or sprint training) they should be done when you’re fresh, ideally at the start of a session after a warm-up. They could also be done before a football training session if you had a medicine ball available.

Wolves’ Stephen Gilpin targets half-amillion milestone as his Prostate United challenge returns for sixth year

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ sports scientist Stephen Gilpin has set his sights on a huge fundraising milestone for Prostate Cancer UK as the challenge he created five years ago, Prostate United, returns for 2023.

Prostate United has brought together hundreds of members of football club staff to run, cycle or walk every day each November, and has raised an incredible £340,000 for Prostate Cancer UK since its inception in 2018.

The challenge has united the football community every autumn, with clubs from across the football pyramid involved – with even a clutch of managers taking part, including Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom, Paul Warne of Derby County and Doncaster Rovers boss, Grant McCann, as well as reaching staff from England’s men’s team.

Clubs such as Peterborough United, Sheffield United and Rotherham United have regularly had teams of over 20 staff members taking part and in 2021, Premier League newcomers Luton Town had more than 60 staffers involved in support of club legend Mick Harford, who is living with prostate cancer. The Hatters even teamed up with Prostate Cancer UK that November, with the charity becoming the official shirt sponsor for their Championship meeting with Cardiff City.

To join the 2023 Prostate United squad, click here.

Gilpin, who recently joined the ranks at Molineux as Head of Academy Sports Science & Medicine, was inspired to support Prostate Cancer UK in 2018 after sadly losing his grandfather, Norman, to the disease in 2010. A pre-season talk from then-manager Paul Warne, while Gilpin was working at Rotherham United, inspired him to lace up his running shoes, and, joined by friend and former colleague Ross Burbeary, set off on a month-long challenge to run 10 kilometres every day that November.

Little did he know that five years later, the challenge would have grown to involve over 300 members of football club staff from more than 60 clubs and be closing in on raising half a million pounds for Prostate Cancer UK.

“Prostate United has grown beyond our wildest expectations,” Gilpin said. “We feel that as a collective now it has a unique place on the football calendar, where we all come together as the Prostate United family to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

“In pre-season in 2018, the gaffer actively encouraged the group to discuss inspirational stories or personalities that have impacted our lives. I chose to speak about my grandad, who lost a brave battle with prostate cancer. He played a huge part in my life and the discussion raised a motivation and ambition to emulate this great man in any way I can.

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and knowing that has certainly drove us all on over the years and we’re delighted that the football family is coming together once more for a fantastic charity that’s close to my heart.”

This year, football fans are also being invited to join their club staff and take on either a daily walk, run, or bike ride. In another first for the challenge, Prostate United will take place in October this year, a month earlier than previous editions.

“We’re really excited for the 2023 edition of Prostate United,” Gilpin added. “We’ve got a clear goal this year of trying to reach £500,000, which would be a massive milestone for the challenge.

“What we also really want to showcase this year is the Prostate United family and network of people that are all coming together to achieve one common goal, which is to raise as much money for Prostate Cancer UK. We really hope that the football community embraces the challenge and gets on board.”

Grassroots is proud to be supporting Farleigh Hospice

Grassroots Magazine is delighted to be supporting local charity, Farleigh Hospice. In each edition, we will be sharing with you their latest news along with upcoming events that you can get involved in!

Farleigh Hospice has been a cornerstone of our local community since 1982 when, following the death of a lady called Audrey Appleton from cancer, her friends Glenda Lance and Dr Gill Collier launched an appeal to establish hospice services in and around Chelmsford.

Since its creation later that same year, Farleigh has provided hospice care to thousands of people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex. The hospice, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, continues to help people to live as actively as possible from the point of diagnosis to the end of their lives, by providing physical and emotional care, free of charge.

As a charity, Farleigh relies on the generosity of the local community to raise the £6 million it needs every year to care and support those who rely on its services. One of the ways that Farleigh engages with the community is through the range of fundraising events it organises throughout the year, which are listed on its websitewww.farleighhospice.org/events

Here we take a look at some of the exciting events coming up… the Annual Quiz, Sponsored Doggy Walk and Autumn Shopping Extravaganza!
