NOVEMBER 2022 ISSUE 2

I’d like to start by thanking everyone that has taken time to read our 1st edition & a special thanks to those that took time to share out link via Your Club, League’s & via social media. The Grassroots team have been monitoring the amount of views we have had and we want to continue growing throughout the season. We have been very lucky to catch up with Autistic FC this month & hear about young Charlie’s dream of creating a Club where he could feel accepted. We will be following the Club’s progress and we will keep you all up to date with how they are getting on, please give them a follow on their various social media accounts, links can be found on page 22. We have noticed many teams advertising for referee’s so far this season, there seems to be a lack of referee’s across the county. If you are a qualified ref that’s not currently involved please think about getting back out there.

With the weather starting to change for the worse I hope that we get as many games on as possible over the next month. Please remember to send us any match action photo’s that you get & anything you or your Club are doing that you would like to advertise.

Good luck.

72% Of All Football Injuries Are NON Contact (Here's What To Do) 4

Non contact injuries make up 72% of all injuries in football...

Yes it's true that sometimes there are freak accidents on the pitch that we just can't control, but when it comes to NON contact injuries - there are things a player can do in their own training to greatly reduce the risk of becoming one of the stats below, let's break them down.

/ 5

Running/sprinting 36%:

Greatly influenced by a players ability to absorb and exert high force at speed and in multiple directions efficiently and repeatedly. This also ties into movement mechanics, posture, the use of appropriate training loads and workload tracking. All of these are within a players control. Overuse 19%:

Again ties into tracking workload but also nutrition and sleep. Adaptations and progress from conditioning training occur during RECOVERY, a players fitness is actually decreasing when they're training. It's providing the stimulus for improvement, but if a player repeatedly trains hard without ensuring good recovery and nutrition, it will lead to fatigue, burnout, and possibly illness and muscular injuries caused by a spike in workload and/or inefficient recovery. The opposite of what you want from your hard training efforts.

Kicking the ball 19%:

A very explosive and demanding action which requires the ability to generate high force at speed whilst remaining stable. A safe connection with more efficient use of power can be made with good stability of the standing leg, engagement of the core muscles as the ball is struck and good levels of max strength, power endurance and flexibility in the key muscles involved in striking the ball. Muscle tears in the quads are a common one when repeatedly striking the ball with power.

Changing direction 11%:

The ability to quickly stop and push off in another direction requires the skill to absorb and produce high force at speed whilst possessing an optimal level of joint/muscle mobility/flexibility and stiffness to protect against injury whilst maximising performance. Possessing muscles with the quality to quickly and effectively go from an eccentric to concentric contraction is a key element here, and again, can be trained.

6

Jumping & landing 9%:

Again ties into the capacity to absorb force effectively and be aware of the position of different parts of the body as a player makes contact with the ground. When dropping from height a player will need the skill and qualities to be able to absorb multiple times their own bodyweight.

Stretching & sliding 7%:

There are times when a players body will be forced into awkward, unsafe and unpredictable positions on the pitch, so it's important that they have the ability to quickly react and remain as controlled as possible in the face of these situations. This again ties heavily into the body's ability to suddenly be aware of it's position so it can make split second corrections and muscle activations to protect the body against injury as much as possible.

Of course a player can never completely remove the risk of injury, but hopefully you can see that every player can be doing things to greatly reduce their injury risk, and it's pretty exciting that YOU CAN have an element of control and injuries aren't always just "down to luck".

And I've not even mentioned the performance benefits of training for all of these qualities too!

SOCCERBILITY

In Essex there are over 20,000 young people with a special educational need and or disability. Many of these young people would like to participate in sports just like everyone else but unfortunately this is a major lack of access to this for them.

In 2019 in Chelmsford there wasn’t a single football club or offer available to these young people, with help from the Essex FA we introduced Soccability at Baddow Spartak FC, our aim was to provide an environment where young people with a special educational need and or disability could not only play football, but do this as part of a club in exactly the same way as the mainstream players can, on Saturday morning they train on the same pitches as the rest of the club and are integrated into the football club exactly the same way, we also have players from the mainstream teams come and help coach our young players, this is so special to our players making them feel a part of the Baddow Spartak FC family.

16

On our 1st session in June 2019 we had 12 players, we now have over 40 registered and run 3 teams, our ethos is to provide sessions where players can learn new skills at their own pace, flourish in a safe and fun environment and say look at me I’m a footballer, this is football at its purest where every player is a winner.

This year we have entered our young adult team into the FA’s Essex Soccability League, this will be their 1st season of competitive football and we are all so excited to see how they progress.

Of course we cannot do this without sponsorship, I’d like to say a big thanks to KAS Scaffolding, BVM Capital Partners, Wixroyd, Ricketts Mere Fishing Lake, MacDonalds, Grow The Game and Nike. We are always looking for new sponsors to help with kit and funding an indoor facility for the winter to use, if you want to help with creating the most amazing smiles you’ll ever see then this is the sponsorship opportunity for you.

for an Autistic League | ‘Every child deserves inclusion’

We are so passionate about making football more inclusive, our vision is to create an autistic league with opportunities for children and young people of all abilities to have access to the sport, feel part of a team and be valued and respected

Our dream is to have an autistic team in every UK town. Who can help us make this dream a reality?!

Our Club it started in 2019 after Charlie had enough of mainstream teams who kept overlooking him, we started with 10 kids that has now grown to 50 on the books. We have been overwhelmed with the wide UK coverage we have already received with coverage on the BBC, Sky Sports.

We have a YouTube channel so the kids can re watch their Matches, Training & enjoy watching their wins. We recently launched our own Merchandise to raise money for the club to help with training for our great coaching team that are all volunteers. The growth of the club over the last year has been unbelievable we have now split it in to a senior & junior teams.

grassroots magazine 22

Our club vision is to make inclusive football more widely available across the UK. We endeavour to be the gold standard of inclusivity.

We want to empower our children to be proud of their skillset, be themselves and progress with the club into senior players and even perhaps coaching roles eventually. We strive for our team and those around it to thrive and celebrate all that makes our club unique.

Success everyone couldn't be prouder of Heath, he got called up to play for his school team. This is huge news for Heath and for AFC, Heath is the first player in our history to receive a call up to their school team. Well done H you incredible young man.

Parent Review "My son joined Autistic FC 6 months ago and its been a very positive experience for him and me. seeing him run around and playing football enjoying himself is all I ever wanted, however its so much more than that, the support from the coaches is amazing. all of the other parents make everyone feel welcome and a great bunch of people involved"

What is an ACL Injury?

What is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)? The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). Inside the knee joint it attaches from near the back of the femur to near the front of the shin bone and this projection means that its primary role is to prevent the tibia moving too far forward of the femur or twisting outwards too far

Which sports can cause ACL injuries? The ACL is one of the commonest ligaments to be injured in the knee. This can happen in contact injuries or non contact injuries. It is more likely to happen in sports that involve twisting, cutting or pivoting, especially if these motions are fast and/or unpredictable. This means there is a hierarchy of sports where the ACL is likely to be injured, with Netball and Football being high risk sports. Skiing, Tennis and Badminton are lower risk sports especially where the sportsperson is proficient at the sport. Sports involving in line running, e.g. Jogging or minimal twisting such as Cycling or Swimming having very little risk. Even within a specific sport, there are different risks of ACL injury, and even the need for surgical ACL reconstruction; in Rugby, backs are more likely to suffer ACL injuries compared to front row forwards, and backs are more likely to need surgery.

Types of tears ACL may be partially or fully torn although partial tears are either uncommon or cause less of a problem so may not lead to diagnosis/seeking medical advice or a combination of both. However complete ACL tears often have a similar initial story or ‘history’. They are also associated with a second knee injury in half of all cases so do need medical attention, although not necessarily surgery or ‘ACL Reconstruction’.

The ACL injury story The story of a complete ACL injury is of a knee twisting injury, with or without contact. The person will often feel or hear a pop. The knee will swell, often immediately, certainly very soon and like a balloon. The injured person will not be able to carry on playing or put weight through that knee. The knee will also feel like it will ‘give way’ or ‘collapse’ under the person. It was thought that prior to the pandemic, the average time taken from ACL injury to a person to undergo surgery (where required) was more than 18 months. This is likely to have increased with the impact of the pandemic. Therefore it is important to remember that if there has been a knee twisting injury, with a pop and immediate swelling and feelings of giving way there is a significant risk of an ACL tear and the injured person should seek appropriate medical advice.

Initial Treatment The injury is painful, which is made worse by the immediate swelling because the injured ACL bleeds into the knee. Simple analgesics and icing, perhaps with a knee cryo cuff, can help with the pain and swelling. The patient can walk on the knee with crutches if needed until the limp and swelling improves. It is important to work on knee movements and have a rehabilitation programme for range of movement exercises, gait training and muscle strengthening, preferably under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

Will I need surgery? Progressive rehabilitation may restore the knee to a state close to its pre injured condition, or a person may decide to not undertake the type of sports (e.g. football) that puts their knee at risk of giving way. However surgical treatment is more likely to be recommended for combined injuries for example an ACL tear with a tear of the meniscus.

Treatment without surgery is more likely to be successful in patients with partial tears and no ‘giving way’, in full tears where patients do not experience giving way in normal life and low demand sports and do not wish to carry out riskier sports anymore, or in patients with less physical jobs and lifestyles.

Patients who play sports that involve cutting or twisting or who have heavy manual work are more likely to need surgery. Younger children tolerate giving way poorly and it is associated with further knee injuries and although ACL reconstruction has some added risks in growing bones the surgical techniques can be altered to try to maximise the benefits while reducing the risk from ACL reconstruction. Patients with a background of increased flexibility may be more likely to need surgery. Female athletes, for multiple reasons including leg alignment, are also more likely to need surgery. In combined injuries ACL tears with meniscal injuries or a second ligament injury are much more likely to need surgery.

However, as can be seen, the management choices are not straightforward. It requires a careful assessment, often on more than one occasion, and a discussion between the patient, their knee surgeon and physiotherapist, to discuss the patients symptoms, their lifestyle and work and sporting ambitions and the pros and cons of the different types of treatment options.

Grassroots is proud to be supporting Farleigh Hospice

Grassroots Magazine is delighted to be supporting local charity, Farleigh Hospice. In each edition, we will be sharing with you their latest news along with upcoming events that you can get involved in!

Farleigh Hospice has been a cornerstone of our local community since 1982 when, following the death of a lady called Audrey Appleton from cancer, her friends Glenda Lance and Dr Gill Collier launched an appeal to establish hospice services in and around Chelmsford.

Since its creation later that same year, Farleigh has provided hospice care to thousands of people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex. The hospice, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, continues to help people to live as actively as possible from the point of diagnosis to the end of their lives, by providing physical and emotional care, free of charge.

As a charity, Farleigh relies on the generosity of the local community to raise the £6 million it needs every year to care and support those who rely on its services. One of the ways that Farleigh engages with the community is through the range of fundraising events it organises throughout the year, which are listed on its website www.farleighhospice.org/events

Here we take a look at some of the exciting events coming up… the Annual Quiz, Sponsored Doggy Walk and Autumn Shopping Extravaganza!

Farleigh's festive Santa Fun Run returns

Hundreds of Santas will be gathering in Chelmsford’s Central Park on Sunday 4 December for Farleigh Hospice’s annual Santa Fun Run.

This event is an important fundraiser for Farleigh which provides award winning hospice care, free of charge, to people affected by life limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex.

The festive, family friendly 5K is open to everyone as the course is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs. Participants can run, jog, walk or propel themselves around and well behaved dogs on leads are welcome too. Santas sign in for the event from 9.30am and the Fun Run starts at 10.30am.

Selina Joslin, Farleigh’s Fundraising Lead, explained, “Our Santa Fun Run is suitable for all ages, so it’s the perfect way for family and friends to get together, have some fun and feel festive. The entry fee includes a Santa suit for adults and a hat for children or you can take part in your own costume. There’s even a prize for the best dressed dog.

“All those who take part in the event will be helping to raise vital funds for Farleigh Hospice. It costs over £16,500 every day for Farleigh to provide our hospice and bereavement support services for free and, like everyone else right now, our costs are rising. We are asking people to donate whatever they can in sponsorship so our Santas can raise enough money to fund Farleigh’s care over the Christmas holidays. That’s the present at the top of Farleigh’s Christmas wish list.”

One Santa who is more than happy to support Farleigh Hospice is Dave Monk, the BBC Essex radio presenter. Dave will be taking part in the Santa Fun Run and recently joined some of Farleigh’s fundraisers for a workout as part of his preparations.

He said, “I am really excited to join the Santa Fun Run and be part of an event that everyone can enjoy. And jogging around Central Park in a sea of Santa’s is a great way to start the countdown to Christmas!

“Farleigh Hospice is a fantastic local charity that has been supporting the local community for 40 years. So many people rely on the physical and emotional care that it provides, free of charge, to help them live as actively as possible to the end of their lives, which is why it’s really important that we support events like this. Please sign up and join me at the start line, so we can raise enough money to fund Farleigh for Christmas.”

Anyone signing up by Wednesday 16 November can get the early bird discount of only £12.00 per adult and young person (aged 13+); £4 per child (aged 5 to 12) and £28.00 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children). Under 5s take part for free.

For more information on the Santa Fun Run and to sign up now and make the most of this special offer, go to www.farleighhospice.org/santa

League Focusgrassroots

A Brief History of the Colchester & District Sunday Football League

In the mid 1960s there was no organised league for Sunday footballers in Colchester This all changed thanks to two men, Jack Poole (a former area rep for the Essex County Football Association) and Dennis Barber (referee and treasurer for the local referees’ society). With the support of others, Jack & Dennis formed the Colchester & District Sports Council Sunday Football League in 1966 with Jack as Chairman and Dennis as Secretary & Treasurer.

The first season began in September 1966 with one division of thirteen teams, eventually won by Salisbury ‘A’ who made it a double when they beat Belle Vue in the final of the Sunday Knockout Cup. The final was played in front of a crowd of over 700 at Colchester Utd’s Layer Road ground, officiated by Ted Maidens who over the years held a number of positions on the committee and is now the League’s Patron. From 1967/68 the league started to grow as more teams joined and at one point there were seven divisions. As teams come and go the constitution changes to suit the needs of the league and we currently have four divisions.

After the success of the Sunday Knockout Cup the number of cup competitions has grown too. The original Knockout Cup was renamed the Thornavon Knockout Cup thanks to the sponsorship of the competition by Thornavon and they also were league sponsors between 1990 & 1997.

Following the sad passing of League President Charles Hewitt near the end of season 2010/11 the decision was taken to rename the competition to the Charles Hewitt Memorial League Cup, and it has subsequently been renamed again after long-serving League Secretary Mrs Elsie Hewitt sadly passed away during 2020. Clubs across all divisions now challenge for the Hewitt Memorial League Cup.

The John Fowler Memorial Cup was introduced in 1976 in memory of John Fowler, a former Colchester Utd player. The trophy was presented every year by a member of the Fowler family and was renamed in 2016 following a request by the family to commemorate and remember the lives of all members of the Fowler family. The silverware is currently presented by his grandchildren Ben & Erin.

grassroots magazine 40

In 1976 Ernie Osborne donated the Ernie Osborne Challenge Cup to create a competition for the lower divisions. Ernie has been an active member of the management committee, is the current League President and presents the trophy at the final every year.

The Terry Martin Trophy was donated to the league by Boxted Wanderers in 1987 after their player’s career ending injuries sustained in a serious road accident. Terry attends every final to present the trophies and choose his man of the match.

In 1994 Mick Baker & Ken Salmon donated the Arthur Boswell Cup in memory of Arthur Boswell’s services to the league committee. Mr Boswell’s son comes down from Manchester every season to present the trophy – our version of the ‘charity shield’, to the winners of the season opener between the league champions and knockout cup winners.

The Wally Castle Invitational Trophy was introduced in 1998 to remember the Class One referee and friend to local football. The Trophy was donated to the league by former League Chairman & President Alf Banner.

The league management committee also presents the Alf Banner Chairman’s Award and the Ken Salmon League Award of Merit, both renamed this season to remember two men who gave so very much to the league, while the Charles Duthie Fair Play Awards, given to those clubs who have shown fair play and respect across the season are presented yearly at the League AGM by Charles’ son Graham.

The League has a very hard working committee made up of a team of volunteers who give up a lot of their spare time to support the member clubs and ensure that the league runs as smoothly as possible.

The Committee would like to take this opportunity to offer thanks to all those clubs, players, officials, committee members and volunteers, both past and present, for their support. If it wasn’t for all those people, the league would not be able to look back at over fifty five years of providing Colchester & its surrounding districts with the opportunity to play competitive football on a Sunday morning.
