With preseason friendlies well underway we are looking forward to the 23/24 season starting & getting the regular weekly football back. We have been working tirelessly for the past few months collating all the winners & runners up from last season with the Sunday leagues taking centre stage in this edition. If your team were not one of those that done so well, this season could be your year, so keep working hard, getting those squads built & getting everyone fit.
We will continue to develop the Magazine to bring new ideas & features, with a ‘Team of the month’ award in the pipeline, if anyone has any ideas that you would like us to explore, please get in touch as we are sure that anything is possible.
Thank you to those teams who have contributed to this edition, without you none of this would be possible.
Please remember that advertising Club affairs, Players wanted, Looking for Sponsors etc is totally free of charge so please send anything you need to us & we will do our best to get it in the next edition.
Good Luck

Great KitAid Road Trip
In this KitAid's 25th Anniversary year, local KitAid Volunteer Barrie Neal has taken up the challenge to visit 25 football grounds across Essex, where he is to photograph the KitAid banner.
Undertaking the KitAid challenge Barrie is collecting funds for KitAid's work at a JustGiving site https://www.justgiving.com/page/roadtrip-essex1677775751739 which provides more details. Updates on the progress being made is also being provided on a dedicated twitter account at EssexRoadTrip2023 @Trip2023E .
Great support has already come from visits so far to Broomfield FC, Springfield FC, Wilvale Rangers FC and Runwell Sports FC.
Runwell Sporting FC have also gone the 'extra mile' providing pitch side advertising (using their own KitAid banner) and made a massively appreciated and much needed financial donation direct to KitAid too.
Can Barrie visit your ground and photograph the KitAid banner ?
grassroots magazine 8
If you are interested in Barrie adding your ground to the Essex KitAid Road Trip please let him know so that he can schedule it into the list of 25 grounds to be visited this year. He will just want to agree a time that he could photograph the banner at your ground. His JustGiving site is also open if you are able to make any financial donation to his KitAid fundraising effort: https://www.justgiving.com/page/roadtrip-essex1677775751739
KIT COLLECTION AND DONATIONS
The focus of KitAid's work, is of course the collection of unwanted football kit & equipment and its distribution to areas of the world where the game is loved, but participation is held back by lack of access to kit & equipment.
Most recent collection and distribution totals show just how close the charity is to reaching the magic 1 million items of kit & equipment shared and spreading smiles for the love of the game.
6,080 items donated in April
43,215 items donated in 2023
977,112 items donated since 1998
22,888 items to go until the 1 million.
Do you have any unwanted
kit to donate ?
Our clubs across Essex, with schools and local people, have been providing kit donations for many years now - but the 25th Anniversary year is extra special. If you anticipate having any unwanted kit or equipment this year you might consider contacting local KitAid volunteer Barrie on barrie.2014@yahoo.co.uk
Mayland Village FC have had pictures back of their own substantial kit donation, which is now spreading smiles for the love of the game in a rural village in Zimbabwe:

Grassroots Magazine would like to support Essex Charity FC with their CLUB APPEAL!!
Unfortunately, all of us at Essex Charity Football Club have been rocked by some sad news about of club Chairman Dave Neill.
For those who are not aware Dave has unfortunately been battling cancer for a while now that returned after 7 years and has been going through extensive treatment to cure him from this horrible disease. Unfortunately, Dave and is family have been given the sad news that his treatment has failed, and the NHS have advised there is nothing they specially can do, and the only option now is to try private treatment.
We are sure you can imagine that private treatment is extremely expensive but what we can tell you is that this man is a fighter and along with the support of us and his loved ones will do everything we can to try and get him the treatment he so badly needs and deserves.
With that said a GoFund me page has been set up below for anyone who would like to donate. Now we appreciate that time are tough for everyone so if you are unable to donate, we would massively appreciate it if you could share the page so we can spread the message fare and wide throughout the community.
Dave, we love you man, and we are all behind you and with you in this fight.

TO BECOME QUICKER AT TURNING
18
HOW TO BECOME QUICKER AT TURNING
In football, rotation is a movement which helps you to turn quickly and make speedy changes of direction. The muscles in your legs are largely responsible for the rapid decelerations and accelerations needed to make a quick turn, but training the muscles involved in rotating your torso will help to make those turns even more efficient.
ROTATIONAL EXERCISES Any movements which are commonly used on the pitch should be mimicked in your training to ensure that the muscles directly involved in these key actions are developed in terms of strength and power to make them as efficient and effective as possible. Compared to sports such as tennis, footballers have less emphasis on making rotational work a big part of their training schedule, but it can be a useful to include it
CABLE MACHINE: A good example of a rotational exercise using a cable machine is the wood chop:
• Stand sideways on to a cable machine
• Hold the handle (set at waist height) in both hands at arm’s length in front of you
• Keeping a slight bend in your knees, rotate to the side (away from the machine)
• Control the weight on the way back and repeat the rotation without letting the weights rest
• Aim for 8-10 reps and then repeat the exercise on the other side
This exercise can also be performed with the cable set in a high position and then moved from a high to low position whilst rotating, or it can be set in a low position to then rotate from low to high. An alternative to the cable machine is to use a fixed resistance band. The weight or resistance used should be light enough to allow smooth rotational movement at a controlled pace whilst standing at a distance which always keeps tension on the band.
MEDICINE BALL: Medicine ball exercises can be considered more advanced and more explosive rotational exercises. Any exercise performed using a medicine ball should always be as explosive as possible, with the aim being to throw or move the ball with as much power as possible.
19
For this reason, it’s important to start with a light ball and to keep the exercises simple. Even athletes such as tennis players who place heavy emphasis on rotational training exercises will keep the weight of a medicine ball light, so most footballers will only need 1kg up to 3kgs to benefit from this type of training.
A good starting point is the half-kneeling medicine ball throw:
• Face a wall, or work with a partner who can catch the ball
• To throw to your left, position yourself with your right knee on the floor and your left foot out in front with a bent knee (just as you would in a halfkneeling hip flexor stretch)
• Hold the medicine ball in both hands, rotate to the right and then throw the ball to the wall or a partner as explosively as possible, keeping your lower half steady as you rotate both ways
• Complete 3 to 5 reps on each side for 2 to 3 sets
To progress from the half-kneeling throw, you would simply move to a standing throw. Place your feet side by side and maintain a slight bend in your knees (athletic position) as you rotate away from the wall and then return in a fast, powerful rotation to throw the ball as hard as you can. The standing throw can then be advanced to a more reactive exercise, but only after working on the above exercises and developing enough power to throw a medicine ball of 2kg to 3kgs forcefully.
• Get a partner to throw the ball at you from the direction you want to throw in (if you want to throw the ball to your left, get someone to throw it at you from the left)
• As you catch it, shift most of your weight onto the other leg (right leg if the ball is coming from the left) and then powerfully return the ball in an explosive throw
In summary, rotation exercises can effectively be split into two categories:
1. Control and Strength: Woodchops fall into this category and as such they can be done towards the end of a gym session when you’re doing trunk stability.
2. Power: Medicine ball exercises fall into this category and as with all power exercises (e.g. plyometric exercises or sprint training) they should be done when you’re fresh, ideally at the start of a session after a warm-up. They could also be done before a football training session if you had a medicine ball available.

McFarlane set to March for Men as Prostate Cancer UK walking event strolls into Battersea Park
• Prostate Cancer UK’s flagship walking event, March for Men, heads to Battersea Park on July 23
• Actor Colin McFarlane will spearhead the walk after revealing his own prostate cancer diagnosis
• Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting one in eight men. Those odds shorten to one in four if you are black
• 38,000 men are living with prostate cancer in London
• Sign up at prostatecanceruk.org/marchmen
“I am so happy that the funds raised will help the charity develop a muchneeded screening programme for men, which will no doubt prove to be a gamechanger. Due to the genetic links, this is a disease that can affect so many people and not just those diagnosed. That’s why I am so keen to use my voice to spread the word and I can’t wait to join March for Men in July to honour those who have passed away and help to raise more awareness, more funds and save more lives. See you there.”
Since March for Men launched back in 2017, more than 14,200 Prostate Cancer UK supporters have come together to raise an incredible £2.2m in the fight against the most common cancer in men.
All ages and abilities are welcome, including families, friendship groups, work colleagues and even four legged friends, with plenty to do at these action-packed events, including music, food, merchandise and health information.
The versatile 61-year-old, who starred in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as well as being the voice of ITV hit show, The Cube, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022.
As well as sharing his story for the first time, Clapton-born Colin will join hundreds of people at Prostate Cancer UK’s March for Men - and issued a rallying cry for men and their families to join him at the Battersea Park event.
You can sign up to March for Men here
38,000 men are living with prostate cancer in London, almost the capacity of nearby Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge home.
Those joining Colin in the March for Men can walk 2km, 5km or 10km around the picturesque park, which is situated on the south bank of the River Thames, and offers a brilliant backdrop to the family-friendly amble.
It’s one day, one moment, one community coming together to support men with prostate cancer, a disease that affects 1 in 8 men in the UK. That’s thousands of dads, grandads, partners, brothers, uncles, sons and mates. Those odds shorten to 1 in 4 if you are Black, like Colin.
He said: “At first when anyone hears the word ‘cancer’ alarm bells go off. But I’m one of the lucky ones. A friend of mine was diagnosed around 17 years ago, and he told me to have a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test every year after 50. I did that for eight years before I was diagnosed. As a result, I have caught it very early and have no symptoms. It’s men who take no action and don’t know anything about their prostate health that are at the greatest risk.
“That’s why I’m supporting the great work of Prostate Cancer UK to raise awareness and help men better navigate this disease. The stats about this disease are worrying so it’s important that men and their loved ones understand more about it.
People can sign up and take on the march here and if they can’t make it, they can organise their own March for Men in their local park at a time and date to suit them.
Nicola Tallett, Director of Fundraising & Supporter Engagement at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We can’t wait to March for Men once more this summer at our brilliant new venue at Battersea Park.
“Since 2017 thousands of people have joined our family-friendly walking events or even staged their own across the UK.
“We’ve had walkers of all ages, famous faces, four legged friends joining us, and new friendships have also been forged. Many march to remember somebody, others proudly stride alongside their loved ones to celebrate them.
“We’re so grateful for everyone who has joined us to date, but there is still work to do. That’s why we are back in London for a fifth time. Join us and be part of a unique moment as we all come together as one community, walking in solidarity to beat prostate cancer.”

Football Fitness Club
Established in 2019, Football Fitness Club was formed by two former teammates that had recently retired from the Sunday League game having created a successful Management partnership.
After taking a short break, both missed getting out of the house to train with the lads, so the idea of Football Fitness Club was born. The initial idea was to create a training club for those that had retired from the game, to help players maintain their fitness levels. They quickly realised that the sessions attracted players of all ages & abilities so both decided that they would start taking the FA coaching courses. With the number of players increasing weekly, FFC added another 3 coaches 1 of which had fitness qualifications, they also added equipment so that the sessions could include a range of drills for fitness, agility & games.
With the Pandemic forcing FFC to stop for a while planned sessions were created so they were ready to start up again as soon as possible. A partnership was also established with Mates Mental Health support group who they put on weekly sessions for. This was a great success, so Mates FC was formed & the coaching team helped them complete an unbeaten maiden season.
Football Fitness Club run training sessions every Thursday in Chelmsford.

Grassroots is proud to be supporting Farleigh Hospice
Grassroots Magazine is delighted to be supporting local charity, Farleigh Hospice. In each edition, we will be sharing with you their latest news along with upcoming events that you can get involved in!
Farleigh Hospice has been a cornerstone of our local community since 1982 when, following the death of a lady called Audrey Appleton from cancer, her friends Glenda Lance and Dr Gill Collier launched an appeal to establish hospice services in and around Chelmsford.
Since its creation later that same year, Farleigh has provided hospice care to thousands of people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex. The hospice, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, continues to help people to live as actively as possible from the point of diagnosis to the end of their lives, by providing physical and emotional care, free of charge.
As a charity, Farleigh relies on the generosity of the local community to raise the £6 million it needs every year to care and support those who rely on its services. One of the ways that Farleigh engages with the community is through the range of fundraising events it organises throughout the year, which are listed on its websitewww.farleighhospice.org/events
Here we take a look at some of the exciting events coming up… the Annual Quiz, Sponsored Doggy Walk and Autumn Shopping Extravaganza!

You are in for a treat with this summer with Farleigh's exciting programme of fundraising events - there really is something for everyone!
For families, we have our brand-new Splash Out! wet and wild obstacle course at Maldon's Promenade Park.
Those of you seeking an adventurous team building event with a difference will love Midsummer Mudness at the home of Nuclear Races.
Or if you prefer flowerbeds to muddy forests, we have four Open Gardens events, showcasing some of the most beautiful gardens in mid Essex.
You can also organise your own events to raise funds for Farleigh. For support with these please contact our Fundraising team on 01245 457411 or email them here.
