irst quarter new car registrations for both Northern and Southern Ireland look very encouraging for the industry as a whole. Figures released by the SMMT show that Northern Ireland outperformed the rest of the UK with new car sales up 14.6% in the first quarter of 2014, with England, Scotland and Wales averaging 12.5%. KPMG’s UK Head of Automotive, John Leech, commented that, “UK car sales continued to grow reflecting the underlying sharp improvement in UK consumer confidence. The market continues to be supported by cheap finance offers from car manufacturers, PPI claim payouts and fuel cost savings from switching to a new car but these do not explain the year-on-year improvement. Rather it is the improving consumer sentiment which has unlocked demand pent-up during the recession. Recent surveys of UK consumer demand such as the authoritative GfK UK Consumer Confidence Index have painted a consistent picture – people are reporting a dramatic improvement in their own personal finance situation in the last year and expect this to continue over the next year.” It was a similar story in the south of Ireland with the SIMI reporting new car sales up 27% in the first quarter of the year, while the commercial vehicle sector improved by 44%. Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMI, said: “The results certainly leave us cautiously optimistic for the future of the industry. After six extremely tough years for the motor industry in Ireland, we seem to be stabilising and the projected figures are positive, but they are just projections. “The cost of a new car is down, the cost of fuel is down and the government has also helped the industry by keeping tax levels stable in the last budget. However, if the industry is to rebuild, it is essential that these structures remain in place as a foundation for us to plan the future on.” This uplift in new car sales filters down through the motor trade as a whole and will soon be felt in all sectors of the industry here that have endured a turbulent time since 2007.

IN BRIEF

DPF check for NI MOT tests F

rom the start of June, MOT centres in Northern Ireland will be checking that diesel vehicles have a working Diesel Particulate Filter fitted. The vehicle will automatically fail the MOT test if the filter had been fitted as standard but is found to be no longer present. The filter works by trapping solid particulate matter from exhaust gases. This type of filter has been in use for more than 20 years and helps meet European emission standards, improving air quality and health standards. Some firms offer services to remove the filter, claiming it will boost performance and consumption. The filters need to be ‘regenerated’ regularly through burning the soot to gas at a very high temperature, leaving behind a residue. If not carried out properly, regeneration can lead to a build up of soot, which can affect performance. This has

led to some diesel vehicle owners opting to remove the filter, which makes their car illegal for road use. A spokesman for the DVA told Garage Trader that, “A motor vehicle exhaust system is currently part of the annual roadworthiness inspection, this includes all components of the exhaust system. However with the increased illegal practice of removing exhaust particulate filters, DVA are following GB by making vehicle examiners aware of this practice and instructing them, that a Vehicle Test Certificate should be refused where there is clear evidence that a particulate filter has been removed. The provision for checking for the presence of a particulate filter during the roadworthiness inspection is already in legislation, therefore no legislative amendments are required. DVA will implement these instructions early June 2014.” ■

iss Northern Ireland, Megan Green, Ambassador for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice visited John Mulholland Motors in Randalstown recently to pick up a cheque for £17,000. John Mulholland launched a charity initiative in 2012 whereby he committed to donating £10 for every new car sold and to date has made a contribution of £36,000 to NI Children’s Hospice. “As Managing Director of John Mulholland Motor Group it has been our company’s privilege to support

NICH,” said John. “We wanted a partnership with a local charity that makes a huge contribution within our community on a daily basis and we could think of no better local cause to support than the children and families that receive an unparalleled level of care at the Children’s Hospice. I would urge every local business and employer to embrace such opportunities and try and make a contribution irrespective of how big or small as it all makes a difference.” ■

KQ Coatings has acquired the automotive refinish sector business of P&E Ltd in Belfast, part of the Carbon Group Company, which is based in Cork and has offices in Belfast and Dublin. The move will enable LKQ Coatings to increase their penetration of the market, offering repairers greater choice, coverage and more value, allowing them to reduce their key to key times and drive up their profitability. P&E Ltd will transition four of its staff to their recently opened LKQ Coatings branch on Prince Regent Road in Castlereagh, Belfast, enhancing the knowledge and expertise within the centre, and continuing to expand their customer service. Richard Steer of LKQ commented that, “LKQ Coatings’ size and extensive product offering will ensure the service we offer customers in the local marketplace is enriched through our cutting-edge innovation and advanced technology. We are confident existing customers will be delighted with the enhanced service and new customers will be motivated to talk to us about our game changing proposition.” ■

New Standard for Crash Repairers in Ireland V

ehicle Body Repairers from across Ireland were recently awarded with a new standard called CSS (Certified Steel Standard). CSS is a national accreditation mark which offers consumers assurance that structural vehicle body repairs have been carried out to the highest possible standard. Setup by the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) CSS was established because of the increasing complexity of the makeup of cars and the level of expertise that is required to repair them. CSS reassures consumers that specific repairers have the ability to structurally repair vehicles to the highest standard. Paul Linders, President of SIMI: “Customers deserve the best service and the best standard of repairs when they experience the trauma of a crash repair. When a vehicle is involved in a serious crash

or accident it doesn’t necessarily have to be written- off, that vehicle can be repaired to a high standard and returned to the road in a safe condition. What is important though is that you can be sure it has been properly/correctly repaired before it is returned to the road and that is where CSS comes in.” At the presentation of the CSS accreditation to 38 bodyshops, Mr Linders said: “These bodyshops should be proud of their accomplishment. Their willingness to raise the standard of repairs within the Industry demonstrates the passion and pride they have in their personnel and their business and most importantly in their ability to repair crashed vehicles safely and to the highest quality.” He also commended the efforts of the RSA for their continued focus on road safety and welcomed their

err’s Tyres has announced a significant five year deal with the Montgomery Transport Group. The deal, which is estimated to deliver five figure savings over the duration of the contract, will see Kerr’s Tyres supply tyres and provide tyre maintenance, under an innovative Pence Per Kilometre (PPK) contract. The contract will initially involve several companies within the Montgomery Transport Group including Montgomery Transport, Montgomery Distribution, Montgomery Tank Services and Montgomery Refrigeration. PPK tyre contracts can bring many benefits to the Haulage industry. The peace of mind that there will be no unexpected spikes in tyre costs across the term of the contract is a huge benefit for any haulier running a medium to large fleet, however, the benefits don’t just stop there. “Every customer is different and it is our job to understand their differing requirements and tailor the right package to suit them”, said Norman Kerr from Kerr’s Tyres, “Having worked with Montgomery’s for many years, we feel we are well positioned to provide the right level of service for the Group and are pleased they have awarded Kerr’s Tyres this prestigious PPK contract.” ■ check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

plans to introduce regulations for statutory reporting of write-offs and the requirements for significant repairs to be certified or recorded prior to a seriously damaged vehicle being allowed back on the road.

“It is time to implement these requirements for the benefit of consumers and road users. We strongly support this RSA initiative and we would see CSS playing a key part of this process. “ ■

IN BRIEF

New Parts Catalogue from Somora S

omora Motor Parts has been supplying top quality automotive parts to the Irish motor trade for over 28 years since its establishment in 1986 by Seamus Moore. From small beginnings Somora has grown to become the largest importer and distributor of aftermarket autobody parts and lighting in Ireland, covering all popular makes and models from European and Asian manufacturers. Somora supply only the best quality parts available from leading independent and original equipment parts manufacturers in Europe and the Far East. Somora has just launched a new parts catalogue covering their complete range of body panels, bumpers, grilles, door mirrors, front and rear lighting, electric window regulators and wheel arch liners etc. Thermal products such as radiators, condensers and intercoolers are listed in their dedicated Thermal Systems catalogue. Water pumps, steering and suspension parts, shock absorbers etc are available in separate manufacturer produced catalogues and are available on request.

Somora Motor Parts are located in a purpose built and designed warehouse in Park West, adjacent to Dublin’s M50 motorway, giving easy access to all major roads radiating from Dublin. This ensures an excellent service from all couriers used by the company. As wholesale importers and distributors Somora supply parts through all leading motor factors throughout Ireland on a next day basis nationwide and a same day service in Dublin city for orders placed before 2-00pm. Somora’s new 380 page catalogue is divided up by manufacturer alphabetically and also includes useful identification tips so customers can make sure they are ordering parts for the correct model. The Somora quality approved parts have all been certified by either Thatcham, TUV, CZ and CAPA. While TUV approval is not compulsory in Ireland, it does indicate a level of quality which may not be met by other body parts manufacturers. The new catalogue, with nearly 2,000 new parts added since the

last edition, is the most accurate and extensive list of autobody parts and lighting available in Ireland and gives a reliable and comprehensive guide to what is on offer from Somora. For ease of use, the parts listed for each vehicle are listed under four main headings: Lighting, Front, Middle and Rear. New for this catalogue is the change from sorting the parts by part number and instead sorting them

alphabetically by description. Parts numbers are listed in two columns for sided parts such as wings and headlamps etc. This means that the part number for the right hand side is on the right hand column and the left hand column for left side parts. The catalogue is available from Somora who can be contacted via info@somora.ie or on +353 (1) 675 4500 and the company website is www.somora.ie ■

uasa Battery Sales (UK) Ltd – the UK market leader for Automotive Aftermarket, Industrial and Motorcycle Batteries – is hunting a third clean sweep of trophies in four years as title sponsor of Honda Yuasa Racing (HYR) in the forthcoming 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). As the team takes the wraps off its eye-catching all new 2014 Civic Tourer race car ahead of the season opener at Brands Hatch in March, Yuasa is looking forward to another successful year of sponsorship. This is the fifth year that Yuasa has supported Honda Yuasa Racing and the team’s phenomenal success in that time has delivered a major boost to brand recognition among consumers in the company’s target markets. The 2014 Tourer is the only estate car on the grid with HYR drivers Matt Neal and Gordon ‘Flash’ Shedden determined to reclaim the clean sweep of driver, manufacturer and team titles they held in 2011 and 2012. The team only narrowly missed that target last year dropping just the drivers’ championship on the final day of racing. ■

GROUP AUTO, IAAF, POC NI DISTRIBUTION, PARTS ALLIANCE GROUP

Block Exemption Regulations support independent garage against main dealer F

aced with having to deal with one of the most controversial issues affecting the independent aftermarket, AutoCare member Bridge Garage Newcastle had the benefit of being able to call on the support provided by the combined effort of GroupAuto and the IAAF, to save the day. The story began when a customer of Bridge Garage, who had previously had his Audi A3 serviced by the member some 12 months earlier, sold his car on to Mark Doyle, who subsequently took it to Liverpool Audi because of a timing belt problem. The primary reason the new owner took the vehicle to the dealer was because the timing belt was under an Audi life-time service agreement,

but what transpired next came as a shock as Audi refused to cover the work under their warranty, citing the fact that a ‘non-approved’ oil filter was fitted to the engine. Confronted by a bill for £900, Mr Doyle understandably contacted Bridge Garage to explain the matter and seek some sort of recompense. Using the many resources that AutoCare members have at their disposal, owner John Hollins sent the customer a letter outlining the rules of the European block exemption regulations relating to automotive car servicing (BER), which made clear that the Fram filter fitted to the engine, was perfectly appropriate. Even with this evidence stating the legal position, the dealer still

refused to concede and insisted Mr Doyle must pay, which is when John passed the matter to AutoCare network manager, Maria McCullough who then brought in the help of Brian Spratt at the IAAF, who has considerable experience of the whole BER issue. Brian wrote to Liverpool Audi setting out the legal position and that BER legislation means that the independent aftermarket can rightfully compete on equal terms with the franchised dealer and that the part in question, quite apart from the fact that it is unconnected to the failure of the timing belt anyway, is of matching quality to an Audi replacement filter, and is therefore a perfectly appropriate service item.

Presented with this evidence and the legitimate position brought by the combined force of GroupAuto/ IAAF, Liverpool Audi backed down and conceded that they were in the wrong and that they would cover the cost of the repair under their timing belt warranty. For GroupAuto, Maria said: “The successful outcome to this case should come as a relief to everyone connected to the independent aftermarket because at its heart it was a matter of fair trade and open competition in the marketplace. However, from a GroupAuto perspective, it’s all part of the many services that come as part of the package available to all members of the AutoCare network.” ■

he Parts Alliance group has significantly strengthened its position in the automotive aftermarket after reaching a landmark agreement for investors HgCapital (HgC) to acquire the business ‘The Parts Alliance Ltd’ along with its Central Facilities operations of offices in Solihull and central warehouse in Smethwick, both in the Birmingham area and from where it services its members. Peter Sephton retains his role as Group CEO of the HgCapital-owned Parts Alliance members which trade under local brand names and are organised into The Western Alliance and The Eastern Alliance. First Line Expands Japanese and Korean aftermarket parts F

irst Line is well known for its premium quality service and repair components and has more than 30 years experience in the automotive aftermarket. Of its range of 12 product groups and 48 product families, approximately one third of its total 40,000+ part numbers cater for Japanese or Korean vehicle applications. In addition to this established reputation for product quality and depth of range, First Line also prides itself on its stock availability and customer service, which means that it also excels with those hard to source parts or those that independents have traditionally had to purchase from the franchised dealer. The First Line product team is continuously scouring the market to source products that will make a practical difference to the independent sector and help workshops to provide the best possible service to their customers, the country’s motorists. Noteworthy examples for steering & suspension, a product group for which First Line is the UK’s largest

supplier, include LH/RH lower suspension arms for the Nissan 350Z, LH/RH upper wishbones for the Mazda RX-8 and LH/RH lower wishbones for the same vehicle. However, the company’s latest steering & suspension success is the sub-frame bush for the popular Nissan Primastar (as well as its Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro relations), which until its introduction, meant that a failure of this bush had resulted in a complete sub-frame replacement. Not only did this make the job very expensive for owners unfortunate enough to experience a failure, but it also drove business to the franchised dealer, as they were generally the only source for a replacement subframe. However, with the addition of First Line part number FSK7269, which fits both the left and right hand assemblies, factors and their workshop customers have a solution to this frustrating problem, which also plugs another gap in their defences against the onslaught of the dealer. First Line is also the owner of the iconic Borg & Beck brand, which has

UAN – Celebrating a successful decade in business

T

his year, 2014, marks a very important milestone in the progress of the United Aftermarket Network (UAN), with the buying group celebrating a decade in business. A 10 year anniversary in which the group has grown its sales, to £250 million turnover – 10% of the total UK market - and membership each year. It has become one of the leading and most innovative UK based automotive aftermarket buying groups. Part of the company’s celebrations this year included hosting a major business conference in Munich, Germany, attended by over 70 representatives from their UK membership base, together with an impressive list of UAN suppliers and industry representatives. As well as the social and celebratory events during the weekend in the Bavarian capital, UAN members had one-to-one meeting sessions with the suppliers and following that, after a break, was a trade show where all the UAN members and suppliers had the chance to discuss additional sales opportunities. A variety of industry topics were discussed over the period and key suppliers provided special promotional offers, specifically to celebrate the UAN business milestone. 12 companies were recognised for their long term supplier support including Delphi, FAI, First Line, Fuchs, Gates, Mahle, Manbat, Nissens, Remy, TMD, Transhock and ZF. The UAN membership also voted for their supplier of the year. Car Supplier of the Year went to First Line, CV Supplier of the Year to TMD and the overall UAN Supplier of the Year went to FPS Limited. A particularly memorable event, organised over the weekend, was a visit to the BMW Museum and BMW World, a celebration of the BMW marque. The museum showcases its cars and motorcycles as well as a display of Rolls Royce models. Following the tour the group enjoyed a lunch at the revolving restaurant at the top of the famous Olympic Tower, which overlooks the Olympic facilities in Munich which hosted the 1972 summer games. ■

Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd’s Technical Services Manager Malcolm Short said: “Following the major expansion of LuK part numbers last year we are actively adding to the range in 2014. Our range is the most comprehensive available in the automotive aftermarket and these latest additions cover everything from family cars right though to high performance sports cars to ensure that our distributors have all the parts they need to service the requirements of their independent garage customers.” LuK recommends customers to consult the online catalogue at www.schaeffler-aftermarket.co.uk for more information about exact applications for these new additions. The company recently opened a new training centre at its Hereford headquarters, starting with a series of clutch courses for some of its leading distributors. Topics included sessions on how a clutch operates, plus the innovative products available from LuK, such as Self Adjusting Clutches (SACs) and DMFs, right up to the very latest developments including Centrifugal Pendulum Absorbers (CPAs) fitted to the new DMF for BMW, Mercedes and Audi and Double Clutch Technology used by VAG, Renault, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Fiat and Honda. There were also tips and advice from the company’s UK sales managers on selling skills that will help them to provide a top quality service to their independent garage customers. The Hereford site is approved as an IMI Awards Assessment Centre which can deliver Quality Assured Awards (QAA) training via its LuK Double Clutch Training Programme, and Schaeffler plans to offer further training courses to companies over the forthcoming months. ■

MAHLE

Mahle Technical Tips Stop/Start – good for the environment, bad for the car?

I

n the first of a new series of technical tips for 21st century car technicians, leading global auto parts supplier MAHLE shed light on two issues affecting the operational efficiency of modern engines.

Stop-Start – it is good for the environment, but is it good for the car? It has been suggested that the benefits of stop-start technology can be achieved just as easily by simply switching off the ignition – true or false? According to Germany’s influential ADAC motoring organisation, the fuel saving potential of stop-start systems in urban traffic can be as much as 15%, but equally there is no major difference whether the engine is switched off manually or via the stop-start system. That, however, is where the similarity ends. If, for example, the stop-start control unit registers any one of a number of potential problems - the catalytic converter is not at operating temperature, the battery is too weak, the vacuum in the brake booster is too low, or the required inner temperature has not been reached

– the engine will stay on to protect safety and comfort. In cars equipped with stop-start, vital operational factors affecting both the engine and its ancillaries, which the driver cannot possibly pay attention to, are constantly analysed. As a manufacturer of a whole raft of OE engine parts from pistons, bearings and filters to valves, thermostats and complete induction systems, MAHLE can vouch for the fact that engine components in vehicles with stop-start systems are designed to take higher loads. Every time the engine stops in traffic or at a red light, the oil pressure in the engine’s lubricating system drops. This can lead to critical micro-friction, which can result in increased wear that can cause corresponding consequential costs. MAHLE engineers have developed bearings with a polymer coating in which solid lubricants are embedded. This minimises wear and susceptibility to corrosion as well as premature bearing damage. These bearings are fitted exclusively in vehicles with a stop-start system. A sound tip to pass on to drivers with turbocharged engines is to

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

switch off the stop-start system after a long drive under a high load until the exhaust system and the turbocharger have reached a moderate temperature level again.

Installing coolant thermostats correctlY The coolant thermostat performs numerous important functions, so it is always advisable to replace it promptly in the event of a fault. Time and again thermostats are returned to MAHLE under complaint because they apparently leak or do not work correctly. Incorrect application could be a reason for this, but often the cause is down to the use of sealant or instant gasket during fitting, which can result in several problems.

Problem 1 – material composition Thermostat gaskets consist of complex material compositions and often contain compounds that are not oil-resistant. If sealants containing mineral or synthetic oil particles are used, this leads to a swelling of the gasket and subsequent decomposition.

Problem 2 – filling level The gasket design has been calculated to exactly fill the gasket groove. If a sealant is applied during installation, a complete seal can no longer be guaranteed due to the additional volume.

Problem 3 – reduced coolant flow All too frequently, sealant is applied so liberally that paste particles end up in the coolant circuit. These particles can swell up and obstruct the coolant flow, and leave deposits in the thermostat itself, preventing it from opening and closing properly and thus overheating. As a result, MAHLE strongly recommends that workshop technicians do not use sealants or instant gaskets, and any warranty claims caused by their use will be rejected. To avoid temperature problems after thermostat replacement, the coolant circuit should be bled both carefully and repeatedly, as air in the cooling system is the main cause of temperature problems. ■ garageTRADER - 17

NUMAX: Heavy On Quality, Light On The Pocket M

anbat, the UK’s largest automotive battery distributor, introduced its Numax brand in 2002 to commemorate the company’s 50th anniversary. Since its launch, the awareness of the brand has become almost universal and it has established itself as one of the country’s most popular aftermarket brands. To equip the brand, and those distributing it, for the next decade, Manbat has refreshed its visual identity as well as the product offering within the automotive range. Marketing manager, Myles Pemberton, explains the rationale: “The quality of the Numax product has never been in question, which is one of the reasons behind the brand’s great success. However, we recognise that there has been a shift in the market in recent years as a host of very cheap, low quality batteries have flooded the aftermarket and disrupted its balance. “Therefore, although we will not compromise in the quality of the range, we have refreshed the product offering to reflect the requirements of our automotive customers. As a result, the new three model range comprises the Standard, Premium CXT and Supreme CXT Plus. “As would be expected of a brand with such strong consumer awareness, particularly in the leisure and marine sectors, where it is the premium brand and the most popular original equipment (OE)

fitment with many luxury yacht builders, each model incorporates the latest battery technology. “The entire Numax automotive range is produced on our behalf by OE battery manufacturers, so in addition to their sealed status, these batteries also feature market leading punch-plate technology, which means they have a level of durability that these cheap alternatives simply cannot reach. “Although the price should come way behind the quality factor, the reality of many low quality and cheap batteries in the market means that we have to price the range at a level to enable our customers to compete. “So the final benefit of the refreshed range is our ability to realign the pricing to a level that makes such a high quality product competitive. In short, the new Numax automotive range delivers high levels of quality and provides buyers with an awful lot of battery for a very small outlay.” ■

ContiTech’s new Product Info Centre I

nformation on all ContiTech products for the automotive aftermarket, fitting instructions and practical fitting tips – the ContiTech Power Transmission Group’s Product Information Center (PIC) offers all this at a glance. A flyer and a video are now available with immediate effect which explain how workshops can access the PIC extremely straightforwardly and free of charge and what content the portal holds. In just two and a half minutes, the new explanatory video also provides a comprehensive insight into the possibilities and advantages of PIC. Packed in an amusing story about the mechanic Tom, the video sums up the benefits of digital services in an entertaining and intelligible way. The flyer brings the accessibility and usefulness of PIC to the point as well. As in the video, the daily workshop routine of the cartoon character stands in the center of the information brochure. The humorously drawn and intuitively recognizable symbols of the video also appear in the flyer. “We want to point out to workshops comprehensively and in various media formats how easy it is to not only use, but also access PIC. We use these materials at trade fairs and information meetings in workshops,” says Heike Meinders-Bannick from the Marketing Service Team. “The link in this communication chain around the advantages of PIC is the story about the sympathetic mechanic Tom, which perfectly combines the challenges in a workshop.” Once the article number has been input at www.contitech.de/pic, the system displays all the relevant and absolutely up-to-date information – without any need at all to register or log in first. To download Technical Instructions, the comprehensive fitting instructions, all that is needed is a code from the product packaging. Mobile devices can also access the PIC directly via the QR code on the product packaging. In short: “The PIC provides mechanics with all the key information for every repair involving belt drive components within seconds – time-consuming research and outdated information are thus a thing of the past,” says MeindersBannick. ■

Blue Print Clutch Range T

he Blue Print range of clutch kits includes 830+ part numbers which cover nearly 2,200 Asian and American applications – it also includes comprehensive ranges of clutch cables, hoses, master cylinders and slave cylinders. Plus, all Blue Print clutch kits are covered by a Three Year, ‘No Quibble’ Unlimited Mileage Warranty against manufacturing defects, giving you complete peace of mind. Being the market leader for Asian and American vehicle parts, it’s also imperative that Blue Print keep an incredibly close eye on vehicle recalls, manufacturer service bulletins and OE parts that have been identified to fail prematurely. In every instance, Blue Print parts are up-rated, tested and superseded to ensure the fault has been rectified. One example of this is the clutch on the 1.0 Toyota Aygo (KGB10, 1KR-FE), which also fits the Peugeot 107 and the Citroen C1. Drivers began to complain about clutch slip, clutch noise, an abnormal smell, and total failure of the OE clutch was happening regularly around 40,000 miles. In response to this Toyota issued a bulletin saying that all clutch replacements on this vehicle should be conducted using a larger clutch assembly, replacing the original 180mm clutch with a larger 190mm clutch (with increased clutch cover mass), to rectify the premature noise and wear issues. check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

Blue Print clutch kit ADT330246 for the Aygo, 107 and C1, is supplied with the larger diameter clutch. However, this didn’t completely solve the issue because the clutch on the Aygo, 107 and C1 doesn’t have an automatic clutch pedal, free play adjuster. Free play in the clutch pedal reduces significantly on new vehicles and following on from the original bulletin, Toyota issued another stating that clutch pedal free play, must be checked and adjusted at every service interval (9,000 miles). Essentially, as the amount of free play in the pedal reduces, so does the amount of pressure applied by the clutch cover, which therefore speeds up wear. So, when carrying out a service or fitting Blue Print’s Clutch Kit ADT330246 on an Aygo, 107 or C1, make sure you check the clutch pedal free play and adjust as necessary.

Workshop Equipment To Stand Alongside Parts

T

he gathering pace of product development at TecDoc, continues with the announcement that workshop equipment is to be added to the latest Version 4 update to its electronic catalogue. The addition means that product data for workshop equipment, tools, workshop requirements, job safety, engineering standards and standardised parts, will also be available as content for TecDoc’s other service products. “We have recently added motorcycles to the TecDoc reference data, but the addition of product data for the workshop area means the product is even more useful to workshops, where decisions about purchasing the correct tools or the most suitable capital equipment is so crucial,” said commercial director for UK and ROI, Shaun Greasley. The new product data element for workshop equipment, tools and special tools will be available for linkages starting in May, so that for Automechanika (catalogue version 04/2014), it will be included in catalogues for the independent aftermarket. Standardised product information for workshop requirements, engineering standards and standard parts, and job safety will then follow in November 2014 and be added to the TecDoc catalogue system in April 2015 with catalogue version 02/2015. ■

Motoglass Carparts Ltd celebrate 40 years in business

O

ne of Belfast’s biggest motor factors is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The company was started back in 1974 by Joe Loughran whose family owned a Volkswagen dealership in Ballygawley. Joe’s older brothers ran the operation while he worked as a computer operator at ICL but soon realised how difficult it was at the time to get spare parts for Volkswagens. After much research, Joe started selling VW parts and then broadened the core 20 - garageTRADER

It was here that Tony Derby joined the company. Tony has been with Motoglass Carparts for 36 years, and as the company grew and developed it needed larger premises. Their next site was at 138 University Avenue and then they moved to 251 Ormeau

Road where they stayed for 25 years to the day. “We moved in on May Day 1981 and twenty five years later, we moved out on May Day 2006. The new premises just behind B&Q on the Boucher Road officially opened on 6/6/2006 and when we needed a new phone number I was give the choice of several numbers by BT and picked 666077.” Like all successful companies, Motoglass Carparts moves with the times and currently they are major

development – a philosophy that exists to this day and helps Mintex stay ahead of the competition. Since 1908, Mintex have been developing products to reflect the ever changing technology in vehicles but the same core principles remain – safety first and foremost. Our first Le Mans win was back in 1923 and in 1951 we achieved our 10th victory with a Jaguar fitted with Mintex Brake Liners, this was repeated in 1953 and 1957. In 1958, Mintex was praised by Mike Hawthorn, Formula One Champion, who used Mintex products on his own vehicles. This praise was re-enforced with a

win in the Monaco and Dutch Grand Prix by vehicles fitted with Mintex products. Our OE credentials are just as impressive when in 1968, the iconic Ford Escort was fitted with Mintex and British Leyland chose Mintex Liners for the Austin Maxi production line vehicles too. 1972 saw the Vauxhall Victor, VX4/90 and Ventura fitted with Mintex disc brake pads as Original Equipment and to this day we continue to supply the world’s leading Vehicle Manufacturers around the globe with products from the Mintex family. Lawrence Bleasdale, UK Sales Manager adds finally : ‘It’s not only

new vehicles that benefit from the core values of the Mintex brand. Mintex believe that every vehicle should be given the chance to have replacement components as good as the originals – which is why there is no difference between a product that’s been developed and manufactured for Original Equipment or the Aftermarket – the commitment to safety and quality remains the same.’ Whether you own a supermini or an SUV, Mintex is the name behind the brakes keeping families and motorsport champions safe every day. ■

TECHNICAL

DAYCO

Dayco Technical Focus VW Group 2.0 Diesel Timing Drive System

D

espite the popularity of the unit and relative simplicity of its drive system layout, the 2.0 TDI engine used in several VW Group models can cause problems if the correct procedure is not followed during the installation of a replacement timing belt kit. In the worst case, incorrect installation can result in the system

failure with potentially catastrophic consequences for the engine. Therefore Dayco, the world’s largest original equipment (OE) timing belt manufacturer and the OE belt supplier to the VW Group, has produced the following guidelines to help technicians follow the correct installation procedure. Replacement must only be carried out when the engine is cold, so ensure the engine has not been run for at least four hours. Once the timing drive system is exposed rotate the crankshaft clockwise to TDC on cylinder one and make sure the camshaft pulleys are locked into position, using the appropriate locking pins, and the crankshaft locking tool is also in place. Checking the timing marks are aligned slacken the camshaft pulleys so they can just

rotate and then loosen the tensioner bolt. Turn the tensioner pulley anticlockwise and insert the tensioner locking pin – Dayco tool number T10115 – then rotate the tensioner fully clockwise until it stops. Retighten the nut and remove the timing belt starting at the water pump, then remove the old tensioner and the idlers. Install the new tensioner, taking great care to ensure that the locking tab is correctly inserted into the hole in the rear case. Failing to follow this step is the biggest single reason for subsequent belt failure on these units. Then install the new idlers. Insert the tensioner pulley locking pin and secure the tensioner in its clockwise position using Dayco tool number T10115 and turn the camshaft pulleys clockwise within their slotted holes, then, noting the direction of its rotation, fit the new timing belt clockwise starting from the crankshaft and ensuring it remains

taut between the pulleys on the nontensioned side. Remove the locking pin from the tensioner pulley, slacken the nut and slowly rotate the tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch, making sure the nut does not also turn. Then, while holding the tensioner in place using the tool, lock the tensioner with Dayco tool number T10020 and tighten the nut to 20 Nm + 45°. Hold the left camshaft pulley with Dayco tool number T10172 and tighten the camshaft bolts on both pulleys to 25Nm. Then remove the tool, camshaft locking nuts and crankshaft locking tool. Rotate the crankshaft slowly two turns until just before TDC on cylinder one and insert the camshaft locking tool into the left camshaft pulley while slowly turning the crankshaft to TDC. Ensure that the camshaft locking tool for the right hand pulley and the crankshaft locking tool can easily be inserted, make sure the timing marks are aligned and check that the tensioner pointer is aligned with the notch or is within 5mm to its right. Naturally, repeat the installation process if the any of these measures cannot be met, but otherwise reassemble the components in reverse order of their removal. When reinstalling the crankshaft pulley, use new bolts and tighten to 10Nm + 90°. For more information regarding the OEM quality power transmission products in the Dayco range, please email: info.uk@dayco.com or visit: www.dayco.com ■

Supporting The Garage A

lthough premium quality products are vital to complete a first rate job, they are of course just one side of the equation. The other necessity is a skilled technician, equipped with the correct tools and the knowledge to make the correct installation. In order to minimise installation problems, every Dayco timing belt kit that has been subject to a change to its components or needs specific fitting instructions, is issued with a technical bulletin, which is accessed through a QR Code on the box. With this code, technicians can easily find the information that highlights the specific fitting challenge and explains the correct installation process. However, to further support technicians Dayco is increasing the level of technical information it provides to the trade through a number of measures. These include a drive to encourage technicians to sign up to its web-based restricted garage area www.daycogarage.com where they can find among other resources, technical information specific to vehicle applications, general product focused service information, drive system layouts and Dayco’s electronic catalogue. The respondents will then also receive email updates when new technical information is issued and for new-to-range additions. ■

IMI & NWRC

IMI moves ATA Roadside Assistance off the hard shoulder T

he Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has unveiled the latest update to IMI Accreditation Roadside (ATA Roadside). Whereas the previous accreditation focussed on the technical aspects of roadside assistance, the latest update has a greater focus on the safety issues around working at the roadside, including taking into account the safety of the motorist. As a result, ATA Roadside now incorporates best practice when working at the side of the highway. The update also sees the introduction of a suite of four levels, which reflect the growing diversity and unique skills required to work on vehicles outside a workshop setting. The accreditation now includes Tyre Technician and Assistance / Recovery Technician, as well as the original Diagnostic Technician and Master Technician accreditations. Developed in conjunction with key industry players, including the AA and

RAC, the new look ATA Roadside has also been extensively trialled with Allianz, the Mansfield Group and Kavanaghs. Steve Scofield, Head of IMI Accreditation, comments: “Motor industry professionals operating by the side of the road face a unique set of challenges, both in terms of safety and technical expertise. Therefore, it is essential that IMI Accreditations in this area reflect the very latest competencies required by employers, their staff and customers. We believe that the latest updates will ensure that our accreditations meet the latest requirement in this highly demanding area.” ATA is an industry standard benchmark of competence. An IMI accredited individual must prove their competence at performing the job in their specialism. To find out more about ATA, visit: www.theimi.org.uk/ata. ■

oodford Diagnostics was formed in 1994 by Robert Keith who has been working within the motor trade from an early age. The company is based in Cavan town. Initially the company’s main business was workshop based and carried out diagnostic work on motor vehicles. This also gave a great insight into various pieces of diagnostic kit. As Woodford Diagnostics grew the workshop business was separated from the diagnostic equipment sales. The Diagnostic equipment side of the business continues to grow and now includes leading brand names such as Launch, Autocom, Actia, Sherpa Alba, Pico, Sykes-Pickavent, Avl, Capalec etc. As a direct result of demand, Woodford Automotive Training was established. This ensures that training now takes place in conjunction with diagnostic equipment sales. Both E-Learning and practical training are available from Woodford. common reaction to training courses and in particular regulated training ie required by law, is that it is in some way a ‘money racket’. Whether you are a selfemployed individual or an employee, a technician or a manager, training should be undertaken to improve performance. Fundamentally we train to either learn new skills or to get better at performing known skills. Looking at the Giro d’Italia riders recently, it is hard to imagine that they have to undergo training regularly on how to ride a bike – a skill that they have obviously all achieved competence in some time ago. So their training will focus on minor and in some cases major changes to their technique in order to increase output or performance. It may even be to incorporate a new member into their team. The same should apply to the training you take for your workshop, dealership or repair centre. Consider what needs improvement in your place of work. What new skills do you or your staff need? Is there a persistent problem that raises its head at the wrong time and if only you knew how to fix it? Are you

turning work away because of a lack of skill or knowledge? The right training can potentially cure these problems. Quality training does come with a cost though, but viewing it as a cost brings a negative expectation. Think of this as an investment in your business that will reap a dividend. Take the time to research it, there may be help available through funding programmes. With the majority of funding there is no such thing as a free lunch – you usually have to meet specific criteria or demonstrate need. Apprentice funding works differently. It is employment based. So you have identified the need for an additional staff member or you want to offer a chance for a young person to enter the industry. You’ll have to employ that young person, meaning that they will need a wage and your insurance will have to cover them as an employee. In this case the funding pays for the training that the apprentice receives through a DEL contracted training provider like TTS and an incentive payment once the apprentice has achieved. The funding shouldn’t be looked at as a way to pay all your bills, more of a help for you start a young person. The advantage in employing an apprentice is that they are learning the industry best practice and current processes that perhaps you don’t know yourself – so tap into this knowledge and get interested in what they are learning as it may develop you and your business too. At TTS, our engagement with employers has identified areas where the company needs additional development and in some cases we have offered a specific training solution to suit. Business improvement as a result has meant that those companies either meet compliance standards, reduce costs or increase productivity or profit. In all cases these were good reasons to train. For further information on training courses or apprenticeships, contact TTS at 028 9082 5653. www.transport-training.co.uk ■

IMI, JABCO-OP AUTOMOTIVE

The IMI acquires e-learning platform T

he Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has announced the acquisition of Automotive Technician Training (ATT) - an e-learning system which is currently used in the training of light vehicle technicians in over 200 colleges in the UK and Ireland. The multimedia blended e-learning platform is used in classrooms by teachers and can be accessed by students from home and covers the entire curriculum for IMI Awards, City and Guilds and EdExcel light vehicle qualifications up to level 3. Former ATT Technical Director Tom Denton has joined the IMI as E-Learning Development Manager where he will begin working with the in house expertise of the IMI and IMI Awards to develop the platform to include resources for Body and Paint, Motorcycle and Heavy Vehicle qualifications. The acquisition of ATT signals the

beginning of a new programme of business diversifications for the IMI and also offers the opportunity for the institute to develop its own online CPD resources as well as various opportunities to move into international markets. ATT currently holds contracts in countries such as America, South Africa, Nigeria and Slovakia which the IMI will look to continue and build upon. Speaking of the Acquisition, IMI CEO Steve Nash commented: “As a well known and established provider of automotive educational resource, ATT is a perfect match for the IMI’s new strategic plan. As we look to move into new countries and develop our existing training and educational offerings, ATT will offer us a flexibility and in-house expertise which will allow us to adapt to any new challenges we may face, as well as allowing us to increase our

Dealers should act to replace aftersales staff quickly, says Jobco-op Automotive

D

ealers need to give greater priority to replacing aftersales staff quickly, believes Jobco-op Automotive. Derek Webb, sales director at the online recruitment business, says that being without a technician, for example, means that a bay in the workshop is empty and revenue directly affected. He explained: “Our advice is that as soon as a member of your aftersales team hands in their notice, you should start the process to replace them straightaway. “With so much of dealer profitability now coming from aftersales activity, being a person light in the workshop can have a direct impact on the financial performance of your dealership. We are often contacted by dealers who come to this realisation only after their previous employee has left. They are then desperate to replace staff quickly and, at the moment, this is often difficult.” Derek added that the current demand for high quality aftersales staff meant that attracting the best candidates was difficult and that salary levels were rising. He said: “The best technicians tend to be very much aware of their own worth to a dealership and recruiting one quickly is not easy. Dealers need to plan ahead as much as possible.” ■

reputation for providing high quality automotive learning solutions.” Tom Denton commented: “The IMI’s expertise in automotive training and education made this a great move for ATT which will allow the platform to expand and improve its offering. Existing services will continue as normal and I have

no doubt that current and future users will benefit greatly from the plans the IMI has to develop the platform as time goes on. I look forward to working closely with the team here at the IMI to ensure that ATT continues as the leading provider of online automotive training.” ■

The IMI unifies managerial training under common standard

T

he Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has announced the launch of a common standard for automotive management and leadership across the sector. The ‘Automotive Management and Leadership Competency Framework’ aims to ensure consistency of managerial training across the sector and a reduction in replication of training. Currently a large amount of training is replicated when managers move from one franchise or manufacturer to another. The common standard allows professionals to transfer mapped programmes or qualifications if they move from one company to another. So far 29 manufacturers and dealer groups have engaged with the IMI’s standard and 17 have completed mapping of their management training programs against it. Early adopters involved in the project include the likes of Vauxhall, Toyota GB, Sytner, Marshalls and fleet management company ARI Fleet. Whilst major organisations have been involved with the initial introduction, independent operators can also benefit from the scheme through IMI Automotive Management Accreditation (AMA) which formed the basis for development of the new standard. This means that independents will, for the first time, be able to match their management credentials to industry agreed standards. The IMI has created the standard after it was approached by the automotive Human Resources Directors Forum, who represent the larger dealers in the UK, to find ways of delivering cost savings and maximising

the career potential of managers in the sector – it is also anticipated that external recognition of automotive management training will enhance the appeal of careers in the sector. The IMI’s CEO Steve Nash commented: “The IMI common standard for automotive management training makes resounding common sense in a sector which spends over £100 million training per year. With a strong focus on technical competencies, the automotive retail sector has, for too long, failed to recognise the impact of management training on the bottom line. “Because of this there have been no previous efforts to unite management training programmes under a common framework. This has led to a crazy situation where organisations are replicating up to 90% of their training programs when a manager moved between brands with huge cost implications for the sector. With this external, independently verified, standard in place this in now finally set to change.” The announcement comes on the back of results of an IMI study, released in April, which found significant return on investment from management training interventions of up to 212%. The IMI has previously warned automotive employers not to disregard management training if they wish to maximise business potential and is anticipating that the launch of the common standard will further encourage improvements in this area. ■ garageTRADER - 55

Any colour as long as it’s white W

hether as a solid or pearlescent colour, white continues to be the most popular colour amongst car owners. The wide range of shades in which it appears, poses a challenge to refinishers when it comes to paint repairs. With the Spies Hecker colour tools, bodyshops are well prepared to meet that challenge. The Axalta Color Popularity Report 2013 has confirmed it’s true: Europe and worldwide, white is number one on the car buyers’ popularity chart. It accounts for 29 per cent of all car sales. This is backed up by Frank Barduna of Spies Hecker International’s technical service: “White has been the absolute bestseller for the last two years. Car owners obviously like what this colour gives them.” But not every white is the same. From solid white to pearlescent, the nuances and effects of white are almost limitless, so refinishers face a number of challenges. “Getting the colour variant right is an art,” Barduna explains. For solid whites, digital colour measurement tools like the Spies Hecker ColorDialog spectrophotometer

and the new ColorDialog Delta-Scan can help to find the correct shade. When it comes to matching a pearlescent white for a collision repair, Barduna says: “Refinishers should spray sample panels to achieve the precise colour match. After selecting the colour formula from the database, the basecoat colour is sprayed onto the sample panel. It is followed by one to three further passes of the effect colour. That is the only way in which refinishers can determine the right effect and the number of passes that are required for the repair. Each colour formulation for tri-coat systems contains the necessary information to produce the base colour and the effect colours.” “The addition of Permayhd Hardener 3080 to the basecoat benefits the entire tri-coat paint structure to produce a perfect result,” Barduna emphasizes. “When blending-in into the adjacent part it is very important to spray from the edges of the existing OEM paint into the repair zone, In other words from the outside in,” Barduna concludes. ■

POWER-TEC, OPTIMA

Aluminium Headed Optima Smart is big Plus+ for Hammers repairers T

hese new aluminium headed hammers from Power-TEC (part numbers: 92396 & 92397) are designed for professional alloy body repairs. With cross contamination being the major concern, most OE bodyshop certification programmes require rigorous separation of tools and equipment for alloy panel repairs and these repairs must be carried out in a completely separate, dedicated area. Although traditionally tools for working with aluminium are generally similar to those used for working with steel, increasingly specialist aluminium tools are being developed to further enhance protection against cross contamination and the resulting potential bimetallic corrosion problems. These hammers are beautifully balanced and professional quality, with a hardened tubular handle and a soft rubber grip for accuracy. Two sizes are available: 30mm diameter head (part no: 92396) and 40mm diameter head (part no: 92397). Available now from your Power-TEC supplier ■

New regulation changes for the 2014 season, including the addition of complex hybrid power units, have seen Formula One cars become heavier than in previous years. Williams has benefited from PPG’s latest technical paint solutions that have led to an impressive 48% reduction in the weight added to the car during the painting process. By reducing the amount of paint products needed, PPG coatings can provide Williams Martini Racing with a performance advantage whilst maintaining the presentation standards expected of the team’s much talked about 2014 livery. ■

TECHNICAL TIPS

NGK SPARK PLUGS

Glow Plugs – are motor factors feeling the heat? By Tim Howes, Deputy General Manager – Supply Chain & Technical Service, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd

What are the main types of glow plug? Diesel has obviously undergone a huge amount of change in the recent past. Although technology has moved on, the glow plug is essentially doing the same job that it always has done in raising the temperature inside the combustion chamber so that we can achieve stable combustion. However, the demands placed on the glow plug have become extremely severe and the performance that we expect is significantly higher than we ever had in the past. The technologies that have evolved have been a direct response to those demands.

We are reaching the point where we are trying to get the temperatures up in the combustion chamber so very, very quickly that there is no discernible delay between putting the key in the ignition and actually starting the engine with little or no smoke emission - even at extremely low ambient temperatures. You have therefore now got several technologies from the standard metal glow plugs to the latest generation NHTC (New High Temperature Ceramic) types and the AQGS (Advanced Quick Glow System) plugs. Ceramic glow plugs, though a little more expensive, are increasingly being selected by the OEs because of their long service life, extremely short pre-heating time and long post-heating time.

Which ones should a factor stock? Because the glow plug is now a vital part and parcel of the Engine Management System, as with most other components, it has never been more important to ensure that the installer is fitting the correct specification item. You cannot go for a ‘cheap’ alternative nowadays because the Engine Management System can pick up very quickly the

fact that it is the wrong item. The OBD system will find fault with the item if it is not to the correct specification and the performance of the vehicle will suffer. My advice is always to fit a plug that was manufactured to OE specification – as all NGK plugs are. For the factor one thing to bear in mind is that it is virtually impossible to offer an alternative part – even from within the NGK range – if you have not got a specific item in stock.

How does a factor know what is the right plug to sell to a customer? All NGK glow plugs are always directed at what we consider the premium end. They are all manufactured to OE specifications or above. We are not in the business of producing cheap components just to gain market share. Our ‘Fit & Forget’ philosophy means that we will only test specific parts against specific applications when we are absolutely 100% sure that they are entirely suitable for the vehicle. This philosophy is one of the reasons why NGK has been so successful not only with spark plugs but with glow plugs as well.

Are there any crossselling/up-selling opportunities in the area? Glow plugs are not like a spark plug where you can offer an upgrade. With the glow plug it has to match the OE specification which the NGK offering always does.

Are there any common warranty issues which affect the glow plug and how can the factor help

60 - garageTRADER

avoid them? We are very fortunate that we do not really have any particular patterns of common warranty problems. In fact we do not have any warranty problems at all. I am convinced that this is due to our core policy of manufacturing to OE spec. A short term gain usually means long term problem if you have not got a quality product.

Are there any impending technological developments in the field, beyond even ceramic, and when is the factor likely to see them? Reduction in available space to install the plug in new engine designs will continue and plugs like the NHTC ceramic types which are available with an unbelievably small thread diameter of M8 will continue to assist engine designers meet forthcoming emissions legislation. Although not at the same level as the ceramic types the small probe diameter AQGS plugs will become more widespread. At moderate ambient temperatures some modern direct injection engines are less reliant on the glow plug to start up. However we need to reduce emissions still further. One particular way of achieving a reduction of NOx is by lowering compression ratios. However this makes the engine more difficult to start and therefore the cars are once again more reliant on the glow plug to start the engine. Whatever challenges face engine designers you can rest assured that NGK will, as always, invest massively in research and development to provide them with a solution. ■

In this edition we talk to

Cormac Moore Director of Somora

Tell us about your career so far? I left college in 1995 and joined Somora - have been here ever since. The company was founded in 1985 and I worked here during summer holidays, weekends, etc before joining full time in 1995.

Did you plan to get involved in this industry? Somora is a family owned company, so it was always expected that I would join the business. I am passionate about cars so working for a company like Somora is ideal for me.

What was your biggest disappointment? I always wanted to fly on Concorde! I am kind of annoyed that I didn’t take the opportunity to fly on it when it was in service. Will never get a chance to fly supersonic in my lifetime.

What was the best piece of advice you ever received? Not advice given to me, but I do like Warren Buffett’s two most important rules in business : “Rule No. 1: never lose money; rule No. 2: don’t forget rule No. 1”

Whom do you most admire? It’s not Warren Buffett.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Getting work / life balance right. Never seem to achieve it.

What is your most effective or personal asset? I am persistent. Generally I don’t give up easily. If I have an idea that I think will work, I will keep pushing it until I get the result that I want.

You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy? A Porsche 911. I don’t think I could handle the attention that you would get driving a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. A 911 is exotic enough.

How do you relax? Don’t get the time! I am lucky that there is a gym in Parkwest where Somora is based, so I go for a swim and a trip to the sauna a couple of times a week during my lunch; it breaks the day up nicely.

Tell us something surprising about yourself… I can’t think of anything. Probably the most boring person you could meet.... ■
