Sue Lightbown - Chair’s Opening Comments Hi to you all…
I would like to begin by saying welcome. If this is your first festival, you’ve picked a great year and if you are joining us again, welcome back. I have one word to describe this year’s festival programme – “phenomenal” – I know I say this every year but I do believe 2016 is the best yet. We had such wonderful feedback from last year’s festival and there were so many highlights. My personal choice was introducing Andy Sheppard at The Grand. I opened the night by saying never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be bringing Andy Sheppard on stage in Clitheroe. He followed me by saying ‘Hello Clitheroe – it’s great to be here making dreams come true’. So 2015 was always going to be a hard act to follow. We had to seriously up our game and my congratulations go to the amazing team of volunteers that I work with. How you have managed to pull this together is incredible! You are all dedicated, creative and consistent in your aim to provide a quality Jazz programme. Thanks must also go to our patrons and sponsors, in particular the University of Central Lancashire who is the main sponsor and collaborator for this year and also Arts Council England for their continued support. This is a Jazz Festival of such breadth and depth that I can assure you there will be something that will excite you, challenge you, move you and give you that feel-good factor. This 2016 Festival is music at its best. There is something
for everyone; be it traditional, smooth, soulful, innovative, hard core improvisation or inspirational, it is here for you. Take a look and make your choice but don’t miss out, buy your tickets now – many of these events WILL sell out. Who can resist Claire Martin and Ray Gelato, Arun Ghosh Quintet, Courtney Pine and Zoe Rahman, Bill Laurance Quartet, Martin Taylor, Paul Rigby and the NJO (in uniforms performing Glen Miller), or the Ben Crosland Quintet performing the Ray Davies’ songbook? Or, stalwarts like our very own legends Eric Ainsworth and Ed Lomax and brilliant young musicians Ella Shaw, Jasper Green and Remi Harris? There is an exciting collaboration between our musician in residence Arun Ghosh who is working with and creating pieces for the talented young musicians of the Blackburn with Darwen Big Band. And this year we have a new late night venture ‑ a party night with the youthfully explosive Hackney Colliery Band supported by our very own BluFunk Syndicate, followed by a Jazz Jam with festival musicians till 1am. Not to be missed and dancing is a requirement! A Festival Innovation! Festival Innovations featuring two musicians-inresidence, Arun Ghosh and Paul J Rigby, and more! The introduction of Musicians-in-Residence is a festival innovation thanks to Arts Council England’s development grant and the 2016 festival has two of them - Arun Ghosh and Paul Rigby. Arun is an award winning clarinetist, tutor, and composer of national repute, and Paul J Rigby is a notable musician/ drummer, an experienced regional director of music, and band leader with five big bands. You will be hearing these two highly recommended jazz musicians frequently during the festival. Their piece-de-resistance will be a collaboration with Blackburn with Darwen Big Band which comprises experienced and talented young musicians. Arun, and big band members under Paul’s direction, have been commissioned to compose new music, finetuned in pre-festival sessions and presented in the excellent environment of The Grand. The Big Band’s performance on Sunday afternoon 1st May will be an exceptional experience for the young musicians! Their performance is part of Arun Ghosh’s two hour concert featuring his sextet comprising the finest North West musicians. This concert will will surely have a sellout audience. Music holding Arun ‘In Conversation’, perhaps talking to him about his cultural impact on jazz in the UK? A conversation piece is something never done before at a Ribble Valley Jazz Festival! Look out for Arun and Paul throughout the festival. They will be supporting and encouraging other musicians, introducing bands to audiences, and featuring in jam sessions. Paul will be directing two of his local bands, Ribble Valley Jazz Collective and Blufunk Syndicate, in performances and introducing a new trio to The Emporium Wine Bar on the festival’s opening evening. Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues and festival audiences will celebrate Arun and Paul’s commitment to jazz education and to their work with young musicians. Their unique talents as performers will be celebrated throughout the festival.

Line-up: JJ Wheeler - drums, Chris Maddock - alto sax, Nadim Teimoori - tenor sax, Ralph Brown - piano, Tom Moore - bass. JJ Wheeler is a London-based drummer, composer and educator. Having picked up the sticks at the age of eight years old, he followed his passion, earning 1st class honours degree from Birmingham Conservatoire before continuing his education at the Royal Academy of Music (DipRam distinction). Gaining a wealth of performing experience in his formative years helped JJ become one of the country’s most musical and versatile drummers, going on to collaborate with the likes of NYJO, Jean Toussaint and Celine Dion. A massive hit at the 2014 Festival, we are thrilled to invite JJ and his band back for this year’s festival taster.

Line-up: Tim Garland - saxes, Jason Rebello - piano/keys, Ant Law - guitar, Asaf Sirkis - drums. Saxophonist Tim Garland is an undisputed star of British Jazz. He won Jazz Musician of the Year in the 2006 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and he is highly regarded for his prolific output as a composer and also his innovative bass clarinet playing, blurring the boundaries between modern jazz and classical concert music. As a performer, he has worked widely both in Britain and elsewhere in the world, with particular highlights being a continuing collaboration with Chick Corea and his four-year association with Bill Bruford.

Line-up: David Bradshaw - guitar, Bob Kilner - alto sax, Sue Bradley - tenor sax, Shaun Heffernan - drums, Romero Deolozo - bass, Ian Helvensteyn - keys. Five Lancashire County Council libraries will be hosting jazz bands during April in the run up to the festival weekend. Duos and quartets will take live music into Clitheroe, Whalley, Longridge, Accrington and Preston libraries, introducing book lenders to live jazz, drawing attention to the festival.

Over the past decade, Snarky Puppy has gone from an underground secret to one of the most internationally respected names in instrumental music. Taking a hiatus from the global commitments of the trans-Atlantic ensemble, we are absolutely thrilled to bring one of its original and core members, Grammy Award Winning pianist and composer Bill Laurance, to open the 7th Ribble Valley Jazz Festival. Bill will be promoting his third album, which has ‘dance and African percussion at its heart, combining world grooves with genre-bending exploration.’ Expect phenomenally high quality and maybe guest musicians.

Guitar Masterclass with Remi Harris - presented by the University of Central Lancashire

He was first runner-up in the Rising Star category in the British Jazz Awards, and his trio was awarded first runner up in the Small Group Category. So having him in Clitheroe for both a masterclass and a gig is a real bonus. Remi’s masterclass will give an introduction to Gypsy Jazz Guitar, and also cover efficient practice and study methods for all styles - how to get the best results from your practice time! Trish is an experienced jazz piano player and tutor, spending much of her time supporting the development of young musicians. Breakin’ Jazz will perform popular jazz tunes in the creative environment of the town centre’s new cocktail and coffee bar - EscCC.
Ben Crosland Quintet: “The Ray Davies Songbook”

Line-up: Dave O’Higgins - tenor/soprano saxes, John Etheridge – guitar, Steve Lodder - piano/keys, Sebastiaan de Krom - drums, Ben Crosland - bass. Ray Davies’ songs are rooted in the blues, music hall, popular song, variety and musical theatre – the perfect vehicles for jazz interpretation. Ben Crosland began his musical education at the age of 13 by taking up the drums and the Kinks’ singles were constantly on the Dansette as he played along in his bedroom. 50 years on, as bandleader and composer/arranger, he is again discovering new subtleties and strengths in these wonderful compositions and has assembled a Quintet of international quality to perform these imaginative arrangements.
This will be a return visit to The Grand for accomplished guitarist John Etheridge.

Vocalist Julie Edwards and guitarist Kevin Dearden are an experienced and popular jazz duo who also work extensively in trios and quartets. In 2015 they made an excellent impact at Ribble Valley and Ribchester festivals with fine interpretations of jazz and pop standards. Get Carter began in 2004 when James Mackie and John Elles got together and merged James’s wild Hammond organ stylings and pounding left-hand bass lines with John’s urgent tub-thumping. A former member of The Selecter and Madness, James appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test, played on sessions for John Peel and performed at the Montreux Pop Festival while John has been a mainstay in northern bands such as The Permanents and The Rankin’ Popes. Playing in front of evocative film projections, this Hammond and drum duo deliver a huge sound with nods to Booker T, Jimmy McGriff and Deep Purple.

2:00pm to 3:00pm Line-up: Helen Davies - School Music teacher and band director St Christopher’s CE High School is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school in Accrington with a great commitment to promoting music education. Their 3rd appearance at the Festival so give the school band a big cheer!
Ribble Valley Jazz Collective
3:00pm to 4:00pm Line-up: Paul J Rigby - Band Director Ribble Valley Jazz Collective was formed in 2012 and has since become a popular band at community and private events. The band, under Paul Rigby’s leadership, plays standard charts such as ‘Tuxedo Junction’ to lesser known numbers such as ‘Crunchy Frog’. They are sure to have your foot a-tapping and get you dancing!

Blind Monk Trio play original compositions along with some surprising arrangements of classic standards. This dynamic network decided to hold its early summer networking session on International Jazz Day (UNESCO), 30th April, at Ribble Valley Jazz Festival. To celebrate this day, NORVOL are holding its first ever Jazz Jam, and a first for Ribble Valley Jazz Festival! The Jazz Jam takes off after the NORVOL meeting, in Clitheroe town centre at the United Reformed Church, right next door to our Street Festival. Here’s a chance to bring your instruments and participate or join the audience in the church and enjoy this special free gig.

His inimitable style, dazzles audiences with a style combining virtuosity, emotion and humour with a strong, engaging stage presence! He has collaborated with musicians from many different musical genres, including: Jeff Beck, Tommy Emmanuel, Bill Wyman, Chet Atkins, and Stephane Grappelli, and has a record 14 British Jazz Awards with several albums in the Top 10 in USA and Europe. Fresh from her star appearances at the televised BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, Ribble Valley Jazz Festival is thrilled to present Claire Martin OBE alongside her the hugely talented saxophonist Ray Gelato. Claire’s show with Ray is entitled “A Swinging Affair” and follows a fine list of leading female singers to perform a headline slot at the festival, such as Jacqui Dankworth, Clare Teal, Liane Carroll and Stacey Kent. Recording artist and BBC Radio 3 presenter she has spent the last 27 years honing the craft of jazz singing. She has established herself as a major presence on the international jazz scene, gaining many awards for her incredible craft. Claire is a featured soloist with the Hallé Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the BBC Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra. Her own 2009 album ‘A Modern Art’ prompted Jazz Times USA to claim: “She ranks among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet”. Claire Martin and Ray Gelato share the stage with a world-class trio led by renowned-pianist Dave Newton to explore the Great American Songbook which includes classics such as ‘Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off’, ‘They Can’t Take That Away from Me’, ‘They all Laughed’ and ‘Can’t We Be Friends’. Arun Ghosh will be Ribble Valley Jazz Festival’s first ‘musician-in-residence’ over the 2016 May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Arun is a British-Asian clarinettist, composer, and music educator who was named as Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2014 Parliamentary Jazz UK Awards. He makes a welcome return to Clitheroe having raised the roof on his debut at The Grand in April 2015. Arun engages extremely well with audiences, musically and culturally. You will be entertained, and treated to high quality music on Festival Sunday. Whilst the concert starts at 2pm, a festival innovation starts at 1pm when Jeremy Davies of Root Music introduces ‘A Conversation with Arun Ghosh, giving the audience a chance to discover more about this multi-talented entertaining musician, composer, and music educator - perhaps learning something about his cultural impact within the jazz fraternity? Arun Ghosh’s role as Musician-in-Residence will include another innovation, a pre-festival commitment to collaborate with resident festival band leader, P J Rigby, and his experienced and youth orientated Blackburn with Darwen Big Band. Both are commissioned to write some new tunes, to be presented by the Big Band at the start of Arun’s 2pm concert. What a great experience for these local young musicians! The audience will then be treated to a entertaining and lively performance from Arun and his sextet which will comprise some of the region’s best jazz musicians, no doubt playing some tunes from his popular CD, ‘A South Asian Suite’. Expect rich quality, a healthy degree of spontaneity, and fine entertainment.

Sid Calderbank is the ‘Fort Knox’ of Lancashire dialect poems and songs from a bygone era, a brilliant speaker and entertainer accompanied by Joy Hunter on violin. Baxter Rhodes is a gifted singer and songwriter. His words and music - as magical and mystical as Pendle itself. The Marvellous Everydays make marvellous music. As one of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark on the jazz scene when his first album charted in the 1980s, his career has just carried on rolling. Some 20 years on, with an OBE and CBE for services to music, Courtney continues to break new ground with a string of highly acclaimed recordings and numerous prestigious Industry awards behind him. His latest album, ‘Song (The Ballad Book)’, takes something of a departure, musically, from the award-winning 2014 House of Legends project that headlined festivals and sold out venues internationally. Courtney has stripped everything right back for the most intimate show of his long and celebrated career as he takes to the stage playing bass clarinet accompanied only by fellow Mercury nominee and MOBO Award winning pianist, Zoe Rahman. Described in The Observer as “a remarkable pianist by any standard”, Zoe has firmly established herself as a vibrant and highly individual pianist/composer. Her style is deeply rooted in jazz yet it reflects her classical background, British/Bengali heritage and her very broad musical taste. In 1986, a 22 year old Courtney Pine appeared on the front cover of the NME, his last quote in a two page interview read “You know I’m doing this for a reason” – and some 28 years later, he still is…

Taking its roots from Soul, R&B, Gospel, Jazz, and Motown, it is now enjoying a stunning resurgence worldwide.
