C

an you imagine walking through fields and fields of flowers? Well I can and I did. it was so beautiful and it took my breath away.

Over thirty years ago Paul Richards, started growing herbs on his farm, which is nestled in the Herefordshire countryside.

As a child Paul had always been fascinated by the properties of herbs. He read many tales of the Physicians of Myddfai, the 12th century herbalists whose remedies are recorded in the Red Book of Hergest. Today, together with his wife Carol they grow herbs and flowers from which they make their own range of skincare products.

I think the most breathtaking field I passed through was planted with bright orange Calendula, commonly known as the marigold. The flowers are the tall variety and stunning in the August sunshine. The name 10

marigold means summer bride, as the heads follow the sun. It has many medical properties such as antioxidants that protect the body against cell damage. With its anti-inflammatory and healing properties it is an amazing herb for calming sensitive skin, so cleansers, lotions and creams can be made from the plant.

Planted along side the marigolds were deep purple Echinacea.

Everyone knows this herbs' medical properties for colds and flue, but it is also valuable in skincare products, such as creams and a mild astringent for toning.

The flowers were a purple picture, and were over a metre high. The delicate fragrance certainly attracted the butterflies and bees.

Daisies were planted in-between each section and I was reminded of my childhood and pulling the petals, saying "she loves me, she loves me not." Daisies mean innocence and are very useful in

oils and creams. Along the outside of the fields I found tiny purple pansies, but I never did find out what they were used for.

The marshmallow plant grows at least four feet high and has small white flowers, almost like hollyhocks. They are very pretty flowers but it is only the roots on the marshmallow plant that are used. The plant is well known for its antibacterial properties and is the ultimate in herbal soothers for the skin. Mullen is a big plant that grows very tall. It's large yellow flowers can be used in many way. I had the pleasure of being escorted through the drying sheds and the aroma of drying Mullen flowers was out of this world.

any famous poems and novels have been inspired by dreams.

In 1797 Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote ‘Kubla Khan’ following an opium-influenced dream.

Before going to sleep he’d been reading an article about Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China, Kublai Khan. When he awoke, he began writing and kept going until he was interrupted ‘by a person from Porlock.’

He forgot what he was going to write next and abandoned the work until Lord Byron persuaded him to publish it in 1816.

In 1816, Mary Shelley visited Switzerland with her lover (and future husband) Percy Bysshe Shelley as guests of Lord Byron. One night as the group sat around the fire reading ghost stories, Lord Byron challenged each of them to ‘write a ghost story to wake the dead.’ Later, Mary had a waking dream, described in her journal as follows: ‘When I placed my head upon the pillow I did not sleep, nor could I be said to think. My imagination, unbidden, possessed and guided me, gifting the successive images that arose in my mind with a vividness far beyond the usual bounds of reverie.’

She immediately created a short story but was persuaded by Percy Shelley to develop this into her famous novel ‘Frankenstein.’

In 1886, Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson had a dream about a doctor with a split personality disorder. He woke gripped by a creative frenzy and wrote down all he could remember. Despite the fact that he was in poor health, he wrote the first draft of ‘Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde’ in three days.

Modern writer Stephen King credits his dreams for inspiring several of his novels (including Misery) and for helping him sort any problems with storylines. King has been quoted as saying: 'I’ve always used dreams the way you’d use mirrors - to see something you couldn’t see head-on, the way you use a mirror to look at your hair at the back.’

The next time you have an interesting dream – do something creative with it. You never know where it might lead!

n the 6th of September a new national telephone number “105” was launched by electricity network operators. Customers should call this number if they need to report or get information about a power cut in their area.

• Customers can also call 105 if they spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put anyone in danger. If there is a serious immediate risk, they should also call the emergency services.

Key points about the new service are:

agnificent Madresfield in Malvern, provided the backdrop to the annual Vintage Sports Car Club rally, which attracted large crowds on a fine day.

Established in 1934 the VSCC was formed to promote motor racing and one of the Club’s oldest and most iconic events, the Driving Tests & Concours was first held on the milelong drive of Madresfield Court back in 1947.

Ledbury Rotarians supported the event by setting up a refreshments stand selling bacon and sausage baps, hot and cold drinks and a variety of cakes to the drivers and spectators and all those who participated.

Rotary Club President, Martin Perry said: “We are always pleased to have a presence at this great event at Madresfield, and the proceeds from the food and drink sales will be added to our "community chest", a project whereby we distribute funds to local community organisations.”.

As always, the Polio Eradication bear, Harrison, was much in evidence posing on some of these beautiful old cars.

Watering & Feeding

OF PLANTS

Pots Pots can vary dramatically on how dry the soil becomes. Plastic pots hold the moisture in whereas clay pots tend to heat up more and very cheap clay pots, if they are not glazed, can suck the moisture out of the compost.

Most people remember to water pots that are on the patio, but ones put in borders, etc., to gain extra height, tend to be overlooked.

If you are planting a plant that needs moist conditions and is in an area that is difficult to water, my suggestion would be to line the bottom of the pot with some plastic. This will just help to hold the moisture in that little bit. If you line the pot right up to the top you would create a bog garden effect and when it rains the pot will fill up with moisture.

Therefore, by lining it half way up will just help to hold that moisture in without drowning the contents.

Water Crystals These are crystals that you mix in with the compost (make sure you don’t mix in too many) that absorb the moisture and expand, and then the roots of the plant can draw that moisture back out of the crystals.

Regular watering, usually in the evenings or early mornings, but not in direct sunlight, will keep your plant 26 healthy.

General Watering of Gardens Again this will depend on what sort of plants you have and how much sun they get. For arguments sake, the shaded area under a tree would need quite a lot of water because the tree will take up quite a chunk of the moisture before it even gets to the plants around its base.

Maples ( Japanese Acers) show their lack of water very quickly in their delicate leaves. Their fine leaves will crisp up very easily if they are in direct sunlight and not getting enough water. Under planting would help this as it stops the sun baking on the soil, and mulching will also help to create a barrier against the water evaporating from around the base.

Nowadays there are all kinds of things you can have, including garden irrigation. Obviously this is the ultimate way of doing things and, professionally put in, all the pipes can be hidden and will water everything, including from hanging baskets right down to your lawn.

Cheaper irrigation systems that you can buy from garden centres will do a reasonable job and really are reliable for pots, and when you are away on holiday.

There are a number of other contraptions you can buy to help water whilst you are away on holiday, from things that screw onto plastic bottles, to all kinds of elaborate devices. These all work up to a point, but nothing is going to be more efficient than physically going out watering or setting up a sprinkler. So if you are home I wouldn’t necessarily rely on these to get the best out of your plants.

Feeding When you are feeding plants that are in pots I recommend a liquid fertilizer in the growing season (e.g. Miracle Grow). This will go into the roots far quicker and as you water flowers and other plants on your patio, the plants will get the goodness far quicker for foliage and flower.

Feeding an Established Garden This is best done with a granular fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season, so very early spring, and then every few months throughout the year. The granulars are slow release and as the rain takes them into the soil, all the moisture slowly releases fertilizer down to the roots, so the plant is likely to get more of it than a liquid fertilizer which has a tendency to be washed away before getting down to the roots.

Stop Feeding in August/September What you don’t want is a plant to put on a lot of new growth just before the winter and then the first hard frost takes all that new growth off and puts the plant under stress that can possibly kill it.

Fertilizer There are many different types of fertilizers for

different plants. If you are planting in containers, I would mix in a bit of Grow More or granular fertilizer in with the compost to help it before you start feeding your plants.

Dry or Damp Areas If you have a persistently dry area you can line this area by digging it out and putting in a liner and if it is very dry without putting too many holes in it, it will help to hold some of the moisture in just like a pot.

Likewise, if you have a persistently wet area in your garden, you should avoid watering this area to help it to dry out a bit more.

This will give you different options for growing things; changing the environment in which the plant is growing will allow you to grow a wider range of plants in areas that wouldn’t normally have plants. However, bear in mind that no matter what you do to the soil, some shade-loving plants will still suffer when exposed to direct sunlight, so read the labels before you buy.

Prosecco ... a joy of life

here are many producers of sparkling, aromatic, prosecco wine. For this quest I searched for a company that produces a range of high-quality prosecco wines, with impressive bottle presentations.

Bottega has a very interesting history, both during the 20th century and into the 21st century. The eyecatching bottles and a great number of the wines are award-winning. The bottles are created by artisan crafts people and are really distinguishable. From their prosecco range I found the following to be very impressive.

Having a brilliant straw-yellow colour, too, this fresh and fragrant wine graces many dining occasions, regularly. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Biologico Extra Dry is often chosen and has many devotees. This organic production is, again, a brilliant straw-yellow colour. Very fine, fresh, fruity and delicate is how I would describe this, much sought-after, prosecco.

Closing Down

T

he bunting is down, the last echoes of the Poetry Festival and the Carnival are mere whispers in the streets of Ledbury; summer already a distant memory. Autumn came early this year. A perfect storm of hot, dry weather combined with desiccating winds induced many trees, especially the silver birch on the hills, to call it a day in August and their leaves fell like scattered gold coins.

Autumn’s interest and beauty are obvious, we think of it in colours of reds and golds, of fruit, nuts and all the bounty nature can provide.

A foragers dream. It’s the time

when many animals feast to put on fat supplies for the winter and store food away in secret larders.

It’s when I fail miserably to beat the squirrels to the cobnuts. This year I bought a hazel that has red nuts and jokingly suggested that should squirrels be colour blind, I might get a chance for some hazel nuts for once. Nonsense, of course, but no harm in hoping. I do get plenty of blackberries though. The brambles are so thick here there’s enough for all.

The squirrels’ habit of hiding nuts in various locations is a good one for the mother trees. For a squirrel’s memory is about as good

as mine … bad. During the winter finding their hoard is down to smell and chance. Consequently, many nuts go undetected and come spring, sprout and grow; a new tree is born.

Many creatures are seeking places to spend the winter. Spiders seem to know exactly where to go for a warm, winter residence and the preferred route to get there appears to be the through the bath plug. Lying in bed at night the pattering of tiny feet above my head is a familiar sound at this time of year … mice are taking over the attic. In September, with the window open, another familiar noise and taking a torch to investigate it didn’t take long to find the culprit. My hedgehog was snuffling through the leaves, stopping every now and then to chomp on something juicy. Please check bonfires before lighting them - the last thing anyone wants is hedgehog roasted alive. Leave somewhere for them to hibernate, or create a hedgehog house with the kids.

One mild night, the windows open, I was woken by a strange fluttering.

At first I couldn’t make out what it was. Then I spotted it, a dark shadow flittering across the room.

No, not a moth or Count Dracula, but a bat. I watched as its sonic radar finally led it back through the window, probably the last time I’ll see one until next spring.

Light Up and keep your home safe this autumn As the nights draw in, our Safer Neighbourhood Team will be out and about in the evenings, looking out for people taking advantage of the opportunities that arise, but there are a number of things you can do to make your home less attractive to those that may want to break in.

To help keep your home safe from unwanted visitors, here are a few easy steps you can take – remember: most burglars are opportunists and if they can't carry out their activities quickly and easily, they will go away.

• Set a timer switch or switches to turn lights on and off when you are out - an unlit house is a giveaway sign that no one is home.

• Lock doors and windows, even when you are at home and especially remember to check windows behind drawn curtains - they're easy to forget.

• If you have a burglar alarm, use it. If you don't have one, consider getting one. Research continually shows an alarm is one of the biggest deterrents to burglars.

• Do not leave valuables such as keys (house or car) near windows, doors or by your letterbox so many of these items are stolen by an offender simply hooking them through the letterbox, breaking a small window, or simply opening an unlocked front door and reaching in.

Be cyber smart, don't be a victim of online crime Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police are reminding people to be cyber smart and make sure they protect themselves and their assets online.

The advice is ahead of Get Safe Online Week, which starts Monday 17th October.

DCI Sean Paley, from Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police specialist operations unit, said: "This is a good opportunity for people and business owners to find out about the simple steps they can take to protect themselves against falling victim to online crime.

Traditional crime categories - such as violence and robbery - have seen a steady decrease in recent years but cyber crime continues to rise.

However, an understanding of the scams to look out for and knowing the simple preventative measures that can be put in place really can reduce the chances of falling victim.

Research has shown that many losses are preventable.

Updating software and anti-virus systems can prevent people falling victim, and it is really important to have the latest security software installed on computers to enable safe shopping and banking online.

• Shut and bolt driveway gates and side entrances.

Basic information risk management can prevent around 80% of cyber attacks suffered by businesses."

Halloween advice Halloween will soon be with us and along with it comes the fairly new tradition of 'Trick or Treating' For many, especially those taking part, it's a great, fun activity, but for others, who may not welcome numerous callers to their door, it can be a very unnerving and stressful time.

If you are intending to go Trick or Treating, please follow these simple guidelines: • Adults should ALWAYS accompany young children - NEVER let youngsters go trick or treating on their own!

• Do not knock on the doors of strangers - only visit the homes of people you know • NEVER accept an invitation to go inside a strangers home • Always keep to well lit areas; wear bright clothing, carry a torch and remember road safety

Spinach, Basil & Pumpkin Rice Torte You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy meat-free meals, and this is a great example of a tasty and filling vegetarian option.

METHOD y• y

Heat oil in frying pan and fry onion over low heat for five minutes.

Add spinach and basil and cook for two minutes. Chop finely, place in a tea towel and squeeze out moisture.

Divide rice equally into two bowls, add spinach to one and divide parmesan and eggs between two bowls and mix.

Preheat oven to 1900C, gas mark 5 and grease 20cm spring-form cake tin with a little butter.

Brush filo sheets with butter and use to line bottom and sides, leaving a small overlap. Reserve six half sheets of filo for top.

Layer torte by placing spinach rice in base, followed by pumpkin, with remaining rice on top, seasoning each layer.

Cut reserved pastry into strips, brush with butter and use to decorate torte.

Bake for 50 minutes until golden.

Turn out of the tin on to a baking sheet and bake for a few minutes longer to crisp the sides. Cool before serving.

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 400g fresh spinach Handful chopped basil leaves 200g cooked arborio rice 100g parmesan cheese 2 eggs, lightly beaten 50g melted butter 9 sheets filo pastry, halved 625g pumpkin peeled, cut into slices and boiled salt and pepper

River Severn

RESCUE

C

ouncillor Paul Denham, Mayor of Worcester, honoured three Pershore High School students at a special reception on 13th September in Worcester Guildhall. Back in the summer they rescued a man and his dog from the River Severn in Worcester.

Charlotte Whitehead (15) from Brockhill Village, Callum Strickland (15) from Norton and Tom Banks (15) from Brockhill Village, are taking Sports Studies as part of their GCSEs and as one of their disciplines, are members of Worcester Canoe Club.

They met up for a trip intending to head up the Severn to The Camp House at Grimley.

On the way they came across a man who had fallen in the river whilst trying to rescue his dog, he was shivering and hanging onto a tree on the river bank.

The man was unable to climb up the steep bank and was holding onto his golden Labrador in waist high waters.

Tom Banks spotted the man and alerted his fellow canoeists, and they put their emergency training into action. Through their quick thinking, calmness and team work they were able to get both the man and the dog into the boat and took them to a place of safety where they were

able to climb up the banks to the where the man’s wife was waiting.

The three youngsters, along with family members, were treated to tea and cakes in the Mayor’s parlour as well as being given a tour of the Guildhall.

Finally, they were presented with a bravery certificate and a ceramic plate (an example is pictured).

All associated with Pershore High School are so proud of their achievement and this well earned recognition.

Beautiful Babies ...

T

hese two tiny kittens were recently handed in to Evesham Cats Protection after their mother had apparently gone missing The kittens were approximately two weeks old, and were very cold and close to death when they were brought in. However, thanks the quick response of the volunteers they were immediately given warmth and food, without which they would not have survived.

These lucky kittens now have a good chance of a happy future.

However it takes a lot of time, dedication and commitment to care for them. They need regular feeds of specialist food throughout the day and night.

The ability to hand-rear kittens requires experienced and skilled people, who are also able to give them the time and care they need. Hand-rearing is also a very emotional experience for the volunteers involved, because such young kittens are extremely vulnerable and entirely dependant on their carers.

Many cats and kittens come into the Cats Protection in poor condition, needing a variety of different treatments. It is thanks entirely to the knowledge, abilities and dedication of the volunteers that the cats receive what they need, and go to their new homes in a happy and

healthier state.

Much of this work goes on behind the scenes and is not seen by the public, but it is vital to the health and well-being of the cats at the centre, and it is very rewarding to see the difference that is made to their lives.

These two kittens were very lucky to be brought into the Cats Protection, and are now fortunate to have a bright future.

Evesham Cats Protection has helped thousands of cats and kittens over many years, thanks to the work of the volunteers, and the support of the public.
