Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

giving new life to old kitchens A new business has opened in Worcester - covering all of Worcester, Evesham, Malvern, Pershore, and the surrounding areas - that can refurbish your kitchen while dramatically cutting the cost. Dream Doors swap your old kitchen doors, drawers and worktops with made-to-measure replacements. With an extensive range of styles to choose from, the work can be completed in one or two days and is much cheaper than replacing everything. The business on The Tything is run by Mark Battin and his wife Dionne who believe passionately in what they’re offering. "Working in this way, you can save thousands of pounds, compared with having to replace everything in your kitchen" says Mark. Founded in the late 1990s, Dream Doors is a national network of more than forty locally-owned franchised showrooms. "Although we bring the advantages of a large and experienced company, we use local suppliers and our own in-house fitters" continues Mark. "I have worked locally supplying and fitting kitchens for many years. All our installations, whether its replacing kitchen to a kitchen facelift and beyond, are carried out by local, quality craftsmen, chosen and approved by me." While they employ their own fitting teams to handle the installations, Mark and Dionne meet customers in their showroom, or visit them at home to help them plan their kitchen refurbishment. With hundreds of door combinations to choose from, as well as worktops, sinks and state-of-theart appliances, Dionne is confident there isn’t a home in the area that wouldn’t benefit from a makeover of some sort. "We can swap the doors or the worktops in a day, or both in two. We can add new units, or sinks and taps, and we supply everything from coffee machines to carousels that give easy access to corner cupboards. The possibilities are endless, we even sell bespoke bedroom doors!"
showroom now, as this one is absolutely stunning," he says. "Every time I see a new Dream Doors showroom open it is better than the last, but the attention to detail and the efforts Dionne and Mark have put in are astounding. They will do incredibly well in this area. Kitchens in Worcester will never be the same again!" "Anyone interested in a new kitchen, but who doesn’t want to spend ridiculous sums and live on a building site for weeks on end, should pop into the showroom or contact us today," adds Mark. "We offer a friendly and relaxed approach to business and won’t give you the ‘hard sell’. At our first meeting we’ll show you a range of sample kitchen doors, as well as handles, worktops and accessories to complement your kitchen makeover. Even if you want to start from scratch with a total kitchen refurbishment, we can supply and fit everything from top-brand appliances to granite worktops. We will give you an accurate, but no obligation quote there and then" continues Mark. "If your interest is in more than simply replacing kitchen doors, we can return with a computer designed plan to make it easier for you to visualise your new kitchen." With houses in Evesham, Pershore and the surrounding areas varying in Period from modern new builds to Georgian houses and victoria terraces, Dionne and Mark use their expertise to help you choose a style that not only complements your tastes but that of the property too. We have an extensive range of doors sizes which can be vital when working in character properties. We’re confident that whatever space you have in your kitchen we’ll listen to your needs and turn it into something special.

Bodmin Moor is one of the starkest but most beautiful places I have ever seen. It is a place where the landscape changes everyday and this provides us with the magic that draws my husband and myself back year after year. The moor is home to an amazing amount of wildlife; including ravens, and buzzards with their huge wingspan souring above. They are often seen on a perch out in the open. Among the many smaller birds to be seen is the pretty Wheatear, which is a summer migrant from Africa and often seen perching on vantage points such as boulders and old Cornish hedges. The blustery wind can be quite strong, but when the sun shines it is stunning. As we wander across the moor the different grasses and mosses amaze us, especially the bright yellow Gorse and a wonderful variety of wild flowers. There is an abundance of heather and the occasional wind battered blackthorn. Sheep and horses wander free, even in the roads, especially if there is a tasty tuft of grass they just can’t reach.

Irish Blonde An attractive Irish blonde arrived at the casino. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet ÂŁ10,000 in a single roll of the dice. She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm completely nude," and with that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, "Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!"

As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed, "Yes! Yes! I won, I won!" She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed.

The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't know - I thought you were watching." MORAL OF THE STORY: Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb ... but all men ... are men!

hen most adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in the gym on a treadmill or lifting weights. But for kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids exercise when they have PE at school, during break times, at dance class or football practice, while riding bikes, or when playing tag. The Many Benefits of Exercise Everyone can benefit from regular exercise; children who are active will: • Have stronger muscles and bones • Have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat • Be less likely to become overweight • Decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes • Possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels • Have a better outlook on life
Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, children who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test. The Three Elements of Fitness If you've ever watched children on a playground, you've seen the three elements of fitness in action when they: 1. Run away from the kid who's "it" (endurance) 18
2. Cross the monkey bars (strength) 3. Bend down to tie their shoes (flexibility) Parents should encourage their children to do a variety of activities so that they can work on all three elements. Endurance is developed when kids regularly engage in aerobic activity. During aerobic exercise, the heart beats faster and a person breathes harder. When done regularly and for extended periods of time, aerobic activity strengthens the heart and improves the body's ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells. Aerobic exercise can be fun for both adults and kids. Examples of aerobic activities include:
Basketball, running, ice-skating, swimming, football, tennis, walking, jogging, cycling Stretching exercises help improve flexibility, allowing muscles and joints to bend and move easily through their full range of motion. Kids look for opportunities every day to stretch when they try to get a toy just out of reach, practice a split, or do a cartwheel.

sessions do not need to last longer than 30-45 minutes but should be scheduled on a regular basis.
The Sedentary Problem The percentage of overweight and obese kids and teens has more than doubled in the past 30 years. Although many factors contribute to this epidemic, children are becoming more sedentary. In other words, they're sitting around a lot more than they used to. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 8 to 18-year-olds watch about 4½ hours of television a day; the average kid spends 7 hours on all screen media combined: TV, videos, and DVDs, computer time outside of schoolwork, and video games. One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or playing video games. Making Fitness Fun Children need to learn at a young age that fitness can be fun! They have a short attention span (20 minutes) when it comes to fitness, yet an unlimited capacity to watch the monitor or TV. They also get tired more quickly, and become both over-heated and dehydrated in a shorter time than adults. Fitness has to be fun and diverse to peak a child's interest and turn physical activity into a "looked forward to" time of the day. One of the best ways to increase the overall fitness of a family is by exercising together. Variety of activity is the key to keeping all family members enjoying exercise. The older the children, the more important it becomes for exercise to be "fun". Motivation must come from Mum and Dad through example, creative activities, and persistence. Physical activity
Everyone should enjoy the sessions, and they should not be rigid or competitive in nature, especially where young children are involved. Family physical activity time results in family bonding. As each family member enjoys the activities, it should become easier to schedule the sessions. One of the most important results is the teaching of good health habits that can continue for a lifetime. Raising Fit Kids Combining regular physical activity with a healthy diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips for raising fit kids: • Help your kids participate in a variety of age-appropriate activities. • Establish a regular schedule for physical activity, that all the family can take part in. • Incorporate activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift. • Embrace a healthier lifestyle yourself, so you'll be a positive role model for your family. • Keep it fun, so you can count on your kids to come back for more.
ALM Fitness offers Fitness Sessions for Kids throughout all of the School Holidays. Zumba sessions and Circuits Sessions for children aged 4-11. Does your child want to get fit and have fun at the same time? t wasn’t so long ago that people were wondering what had happened to wasps, who were conspicuous by their absence over much of this glorious summer. They needn’t have worried, as they are back with a vengeance. Quite literally, as a recent sting on my foot can testify. The wasp is a much maligned creature, and I attribute this to bad PR. We all know the crucial role that bees play in pollination, and we also enjoy the fruits of their labours, namely honey and beeswax. Wasps don’t play an active part in pollination, the notable exception being the fig wasp, nor do they produce anything of note and certainly nothing as tasty as honey. Wasps are parasites first and foremost, laying their eggs on or often in their host. Whilst this doesn’t sound a particularly pleasant pastime, it does mean that wasps play a critical role in pest control. Almost every species of insect pest has a corresponding species of wasp that preys upon it, paralysing it in order to provide food for their larvae. Such a natural method of pest control, which is generally effective and without a pesticide in sight, is known as bio-control. Wasps show little interest in agricultural crops, fallen fruit excepted, so an increasing number of farmers are turning to wasps to help them produce crops of improved quantity and quality.
unfertilised eggs, with wasps having complete control over the sex of their offspring. This puts paid to the suggestion that gender selection is a relatively modern phenomenon. It was a yellow jacket that stung my foot, a female yellow jacket to be precise as males do not possess the offending ovipositor, or stinger. It had clearly been threatened by me as I disturbed it happily minding its own business on a fallen apple in the back garden. According to the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, which rates stings from various insects from 0 to 4, my sting from a yellow jacket scored 2, worse than a bald-faced hornet (to be fair, I would wantonly sting people if I was referred to in such unflattering terms) but not as bad as a honey bee. The Schmidt Sting Pain Index is subjective and non-scientific, as borne out by the accompanying commentary for a yellow jacket: “like WC Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue”. Top of the Sting Pain Index charts, incidentally, is the bullet ant, which scores an impressive 4+ and an even more evocative description: “pure, intense b r i l l i a nt pain. Like fire-walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch nail grinding into your heel”. Most wasp colonies will die off during the autumn, leaving only the mated queens to hibernate through the winter. This will be of little comfort to my foot, but it could have been worse...
A mutated version of the yellow jacket, the tracker jacker, features strongly in The Hunger There are over 100,000 species of wasp but the Games trilogy. Their stings raise lumps like one that we are most familiar with is the yellow plums and cause maddening hallucinations jacket. In a shining example of the understated that can lead to death, and would most likely brilliance of nature, female wasps come from take the Schmidt Sting Pain Index to a Spinal fertilized eggs, while male wasps develop from Tap-like 11. 21 Please mention THE VILLAGER when responding to advertisers

hat a year it has been! I was standing contemplating the past growing season amid the swirling mist of my bonfire; smokey incense spiralling up to meet the gathering gloom of an autumnal evening. The sweet scent of roses and jasmine of a warm summer evening replaced by a sharpness in the air combined with rich mellow aromas of composting leaves and damp grass. There is something about the activity of tidying the garden away, before the inevitable harshness of winter that leads us into a time of reflection. We had a very late start spring this year; winter cold hung around for so long. We finally managed to get the beans and cucurbits planted only to have them fried in the hottest of summers. In the end, we enjoyed a respectable harvest of fruit and vegetables, in spite of the birds eating most of my strawberries and redcurrants, before I could get to them and the foxes enjoyed far too many raspberries and plums (not to mention all of my chickens and ducks ... but that’s another story). We had a rather good crop of hedgehogs too! Mrs Tiggiwinkle set up her nursery under the bench in our old propagating house; the one we were due to take down early summer. So that rather put a stop to our plans, but it was worth it to see those cute little
24
Hedgehogs are fully carnivorous and great biological pest control, eating all manner of slugs, snails, beetles, insects and the odd earthworm. We are not short of any of these in nursery or garden. I would much rather have a hedgehog army than resort to using slug pellets, and thankfully Mrs T and her brood have done us proud; even my lettuce escaped being decimated this year. Our spiney friends were voted as Britain’s National Species beating off fierce competition from badgers, oaks trees, otters and many others; but sadly their numbers (like much of our wildlife) are in sharp decline. Several factors are responsible: badgers like to eat a few, but cars flat-pack them on the highways, killing tens of thousands every year. The use of garden pesticides kill their potential dinner, whilst rodenticides are attractive to molluscs, which store the poison and then in turn kill the hedgehog when he dines on slug. Hedgehogs love to mooch around leafy shrubberies and rootling in the bottom of hedges. Loss of habitat through ever expanding housing estates with tidy modern enclosed gardens devoid of plants, gives the hedgehog nowhere to go. So what can be done to help the nation’s favourite wild animal? Start by thinking like a hedgehog! • Stop being so meticulously tidy; create a bit of shrubby wilderness around the edges of our gardens adding piles of logs and brushwood.

‘hog chalet’. At the very least collect up your fallen leaves and dump them in a pile ready for an itinerant hedgepig looking for a winter des. res. • Resolve not to use pesticides to kill insects and slugs Even better, you could become a champion and join Hedgehog Street. Hedgehogs can cover 1-2 km per night and need to roam over at least nine connected gardens, so small gaps in the base of a fence between neighbours will help him get about. Visit www.hedgehogstreet.org to see how it all works. Hedgehogs are nocturnal critters, so if you find one outdoors during daylight, it is most likely injured or sick. Furthermore, in winter, it could be suffering from hypothermia and needs your immediate attention. For details on how to help a hypothermic hog visit: www.woodlandsanimalsanctuary.org.uk/animalcare/hedgehog-care There is also a wealth of information available on the web about winter feeding and caring for hedgehogs. Any hog under 500g is unlikely to live through winter without feeding up and the correct food is vitally important. Traditional bread and milk is extremely bad for them, on many levels and can even kill them, whereas they really enjoy minced beef or meaty cat/ dog food. Very small, orphaned hedgepiglets and those born late in the year are unlikely to survive without specialist care from a wildlife rehabilitator.
Whilst hedgehogs can swim, garden ponds and uncovered swimming pools pose a threat of death by drowning, if shingle beach or escape steps are absent. Litter, uncapped drains, netting cloches and fruit cages are all hazards to be negotiated and the man with the strimmer, whizzing grass from under bushes, can unwittingly damage a dozing hedgepig. And of course having a good bonfire is all part and parcel of the autumn garden tidyup. Piles of brushwood and newspaper make excellent nesting material for an hibernaculum. In case you are wondering; yes, I did check first. I made up my bonfire a fresh, so there was no toasted hog! he Dolphin pub in Bishampton has recently reopened, under the new management of Lee Jones. The pub, which was purchased by the parish council from Enterprise Inns, has been completely refurbished, inside and out, to a high standard, giving it a light modern feel throughout. The restaurant has been partially separated from the bar with a glass block wall, giving more privacy to diners, and a new decking area at the front of the building is great for al fresco dining. In the past, The Dolphin has not been renowned for its food, and this is where the biggest change has been made! Lee has had many years' experience working in the food industry, and for three years, until recently, was joint owner of the Chequers Inn in Fladbury. He is now making the most of his experience, producing an affordable menu with classic dishes such as: Pan fried Dutch Calves Liver with Bacon & Sage with a Masala Sauce or Roast Rump of Lamb, Spinach, Peas & Broad Bean saute with Mint Pesto, as well as a fresh fish specials board that changes on a daily basis. You can also choose from a bar menu with all the old pub favourites such as gammon, home-made beef burgers, hand made pie and mash all for only £6.50 at lunch times.
garlic chilli prawns, all pan fried in butter and served with gourmet chunky chips, field mushroom, salad and home-made beer batter onion rings! In fact pretty much every thing is home made, including the puddings and ice creams with seasonal flavours, which at the moment are Damson & Gin or Pershore Plum. In addition to modern lagers and ciders, such as Peroni and Aspels, there are always four Real Ales available, as well as a simple, but classic and affordable wine list.

s the autumn approaches it’s time to take stock of what needs doing and where with your grassland, fields and paddocks. Preparing the land now for next spring is essential if you dream of cruising into spring 2014 knowing that your grassland will be in fine fettle. Autumn is the time to spray for docks and ragwort if you’re serious about weed control. Spraying now, disrupts their growth cycle significantly enough to lessen the amount you’ll see in spring, remembering of course that weed control and field maintenance is always an ongoing programme. Need some advice? Well, help is at hand from local company, JM Paddock & Field Maintenance. Run by Jordan Massey, whose company offers a high quality and professional service to suit all your requirements, from oneoff jobs to monthly contracts. Using Agricultural ATVs and the most advanced Logic implements, Jordan provides what he describes as “compact farming at its best”.

“Getting the right time of year for the right growth phase for weed control isn’t difficult. Just consult your regular agricultural contractor for advice, then act on it, that way your paddocks stand a good chance of almost being weed free – now wouldn’t that be nice?” says Jordan. “And don’t forget to finish things off with a good harrow and roll before winter sets in”. “Spraying is quick, easy & affordable, minutes not hours & so many benefits! All our machinery is compact so small access to fields & paddocks with trees are easy to maintain. It’s time to treat yourself and your paddock to some TLC – it’s cheaper by contract.”

They are always getting into trouble and their parents know if any mischief occurs in their town, the two boys are probably involved. The boys' mother heard that the parish minister had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The minister agreed, but asked to see them individually. The mother arranged to send the 8-year old in the morning, and the 10-year old in the afternoon. The minister, a huge man with a deep booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, "Do you know where God is, boy?" The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open. So the minister repeated the question in an even sterner tone, "Where is God?!" Again, the boy made no attempt to answer. The minister raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, "WHERE IS GOD?!" The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran home and dived into a cupboard, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the cupboard, he asked, "What happened?"
Pinvin, Pershore
His brother, gasping for breath, replied, "We are in BIG trouble this time! "GOD is missing, and they think WE did it!"

Yarg Cheese
by Andrew Brooks
Y
arg is a semi-hard cow's milk cheese made in Cornwall, from the milk of Friesian cows. Before being left to mature, this cheese is wrapped in nettle leaves to form an edible, though mouldy, rind. The texture varies from creamy and soft immediately under the nettle coating, to a Caerphilly-like crumbly texture in the middle. Modern production is at Pengreep farm near Truro, by Lynher Dairies from an old recipe. "Yarg" is simply "Gray" spelt backwards, after Allan and Jenny Gray, the couple who gave the recipe to Pengreep Farm in the 1970s. Yarg is produced solely in Cornwall by Lynher Dairies and has never been manufactured on a mass scale. It was first made by the Grays at Withiel and from 1984 to 2006 at Netherton Farm near Upton Cross, Cornwall, by Lynher Dairies. From 2001 to 2006 it was also made at Pengreep. Another version of the cheese is Cornish Wild Garlic Yarg which is covered with wild garlic leaves. Great talking point at any cheese evening, and a good story to go with it.

T
his is a busy year and no mistake! Saturday 14th September was our first venture into the Heritage Open Days annual event but it was enjoyed by organisers and visitors so much that we are contemplating making it a regular event. We were very encouraged by the take-up of the tours and the interest shown in the displays in the church. Both the morning and afternoon tours took more than two hours, with many of the visitors from Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Worcester being former residents who were ready to swap anecdotes, and sometimes photographs about village life as they remembered it. We even had a couple who had travelled especially all the way from Bracknell in Berkshire! They had lived in Bishampton and they said they were pleased to see the village community was still as vibrant
as it was forty-five years ago when they had lived here. Our newly published calendar was well received on the day, as was our heritage leaflet. Copies of these are available at £5 and £1 respectively from the Village Shop or by contacting one of the committee members. We’re now looking forward to the re-dedication of the newly restored war memorial, to be performed by Bishop John at 12.30pm on Sunday 13th October. Our next meeting is 9th October at the Villages Hall, Broad Lane – always pleased to see both old and new faces. We’re also pleased to say that our website is now back up: www.bishampton.org.uk and we're keen to get people involved to ensure we have an ongoing ‘living history’ of the village, as well as delving into the past.

Wedding Re-Enactment You are invited to a Re-enactment of the Wedding of
Lt-Col. John SomersCocks & Miss Margaret Nash on
Saturday 31st August 2013 (1803) at 2 pm at
the Church of St John The Baptist, Strensham (Miss MichelleConrad will grace us with a Solo Rendition during the Service, accompanied by Mr Robert Coates) RSVP (see below)
(Tickets £3 Adults, £1 children)
And what a Wedding it turned out to be. The event was a re-enactment of the wedding between Lt. Col Cocks, 1st Earl Somers (whose family seat was Eastnor Castle, and who was also the founder of the Worcester Yeomanry Cavalry)and Miss Margaret Nash, which took place at St John the Baptist Church, Strensham, on 19th March 1785. The re-enactment was in aid of the Church Conservation Trust which is a national charity that seeks to protect and maintain historic churches at risk. One such institution is St John the Baptist Church in Strensham which has been in the care of The Trust since 1991. A beautiful, Anglican structure which sits on a hill overlooking the village of Eckington, and the earliest fabric of which dates from the 14th Century. It has superb wooden decorated panels, a Norman tub font, 16th Century pews and in the chancel, a number of monuments and brasses to the Russell family, the earliest is of Sir Robert Russell who died in 1390.

Worcester Re-Enactors who, dressed in their period costume, gave the wedding a sense of both reality and history. Following the ceremony and the modern day traditional, if somewhat paradoxical and incongruous, photographic opportunities, the guests were invited to join the bride and groom at Hopyard Farm in celebration. No more incongruous or paradoxical a scene could perhaps be ‘photographed’ than those ladies wearing full regency costume whilst at the same time wielding serious cameras and long lenses that one sees everyone toting today. Two delightful young ladies (Maisy and Clara) played their part very ably, as the bridesmaids. After the serious eating and drinking (some more serious than others) was out of the way, the guests were then treated to some dancing from the period and the military arm of the re-enactors put on a fine musket loading and firing display, although the ducks and fishermen were not overly amused. A thoroughly enjoyable day out as well as a finely staged, well organised and well attended reenactment. The Church Conservation Trust (http://www. visitchurches.org.uk) is a fine body and deserves all the support it can get, especially when maintaining this beautiful Church is part of the plan.
The re-enactment took place in the glorious summer sunshine and was overseen by Acting Rev. Gordon Sawyer (he and his wife Sue organised the event).
