Hello Readers... Welcome to the November issue of the Ledbury Focus. Autumn is well and truly with us now, the days are getting shorter (and colder!) and the leaves on the trees are changing colour – those that actually stay on the trees that is! I spent several hours last weekend sweeping up and clearing away fallen leaves on the front driveway, only to find a new batch had arrived the following day! Fortunately the leaves I gathered up were all dry, so we will be able to use them to make a nest in the hedgehog house at the bottom of the garden.

And speaking of hedgehogs, it appears Ledbury has more than a few of these delightful little creatures - have a look at Joan Wakeling’s article about them on page 71.

Remembrance Sunday Ledbury Town Council

T

he last few months have seen major changes in Ledbury Town Council. Since becoming chairman of the Council, Cllr Nina Shields has instigated a root and branch review of the way the Council operates, this includes:

11th November 2018 at 10.30am at the War Memorial

Parade Act of Remembrance followed by a service in St Michael’s Church

• A complete overhaul of the way the Council operates financially. Changes are being made in the way accounts are presented so that they are easier to understand. • Adopting a professional approach in recruiting a new Town Clerk, Deputy Clerk and Grounds staff. • Improving the way budgets are set. The process now includes a public meeting to let residents have their say on how their taxes are spent. • Drawing up management plans for events such as the October Fayre, to ensure compliance with current regulations on health and safety, first aid, and traffic management. • Developing the use of Facebook and overhauling the website to improve communications with the community. The Council has welcomed five new Councillors elected in by-elections replacing those resigning in the spring. These are Cllrs Phillip Howells, Dee-Linda Knight, Viktoria Low and Daniel Vesma for North Ward plus Cllr Dean Whattler for West Ward. Over the next few months the Council will be reviewing matters ranging from the Neighbourhood Development Plan to Traffic Management. The Council will welcome the involvement of local residents and will post information as it becomes available. Cllr Shields said: “We now have a vision for the way that Ledbury Town Council delivers its services with less bureaucracy and more effective use of taxpayers’ money.”

Home Energy & Benefit Checks

P

eople in Herefordshire face multiple challenges and barriers to maintaining their health and well-being, and dealing with fuel poverty. Financial pressures associated with living in rural areas, such as costs for transport and domestic heating, mean some households spend more to achieve the same standards of living as equivalent households living in urban areas. Age UK Hereford & Localities is pleased to announce it will be working with Marches Energy Agency (MEA) to support older people to keep safe and warm by offering two free services. From October 2018 through to March 2019, we will be offering free home energy checks and free benefit checks. Ledbury Focus

Home Energy Checks: MEA will be carrying out the home energy checks. The aim is to provide practical energy efficiency information and expert advice to older people. The project will enable older people to change their energy use behaviour and benefit from small practical measures which could potentially reduce their energy bills whilst remaining warm and well. Home energy checks will include: • A thorough assessment of the clients circumstances, usage of energy, hot water system and insulation. • Give basic advice on how to keep warm and save energy. • Supply and install simple energy efficiency measures (draught excluders, letter box brushes, radiator foil, sockets timers and other items). • Help you to apply for Warm Homes Discount and the Priority Services Register.

• Review your energy tariff and payment method. Benefit Checks: Age UK Hereford & Localities will be offering free benefit checks. Our Information & Advice team will ensure that you are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled and also review your current benefits, making sure that you are receiving the correct amounts. They will help with benefits such as Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Carers Allowance, State Pension, Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit. For more information or to find out how you can arrange a free home energy check or benefit check, for yourself or someone you know, please contact us: telephone: 0333 0066 299 email: contact@ageukhl.org Registered Charity Number: 1093502

GOLD: Ledbury in Bloom makes it 12 in a row! asked to do more - have you been to the railway station recently or seen the new bed being developed where the line of leylandii trees were removed by Queens Walk next to the Recreation Ground?

T

he RHS Heart of England in Bloom Award Presentation Ceremony was held at The National Brewery Centre, Burton upon Trent on Thursday 20th September. Ledbury were first up in the Town Category and were delighted to hear the word “Gold” announced by Chairman of Judges Roger Bache. The award was presented by Les Goodman, President of HOEIB,and was accepted on behalf of the team by Deputy Chair Christina Vass and volunteer Doreen Feakes.

Would you like to join the team? It can be fun and the worst thing that can happen is you may get wet, dirty or cold! Hi-Viz jacket and gloves provided! New volunteers of any experience are always welcome. Ledbury in Bloom are developing a more flexible approach so we can find you a role whatever your experience or availability. We would be particularly interested to hear from any group that would like to take responsibility for a existing area or have ideas for how to improve their local area.”

Contact Clive on 01531 634716 for a chat.

Chairman of Ledbury in Bloom, Clive Gunn said “The award is a simple framed certificate but it means so much to the small band of volunteers who have worked tirelessly throughout the year in rain, sun and occasionally snow. Thanks must also go to all the sponsors whatever the size of their donation. We can’t do it without them and we hope to show our gratitude shortly. New sponsors of any size are always welcome.” He went on to say “This has been an awkward year for us with several setbacks and new ventures; some very unexpected. The success is in no small measure due to Tina’s efficient organisation , the magnificent response from our small band of volunteers and the devotion of our watering team. Well done also to all who have transformed Leadon Way, from those who have taken on the roundabouts to the ‘Ninja’ weeders. Shortly we will hear from the judges and find out where we excelled and where there is room for improvement. In the meantime the autumn pruning, weeding and plant splitting goes on. The problem with success is that we are always being

Destination of the Month: Greek Islands 18

T

he Greek Islands are a stunning collection of islands, each one with its own characteristics and atmosphere. A blend of fantastic food, majestic scenery and a hot climate, rustic white-washed walls and every shade of blue you can imagine. There is an island to suit everyone or perhaps an “Island Hopping” holiday would suit and is becoming very popular. Kefalonia – an island of idyllic luscious green scenery and temperate weather, as well as a host of fun activities. Ideal for those seeking a traditional beach holiday, with an abundance of sandy beaches and rustic harbours. For a day trip you can choose to go on a short boat ride to an island lying off the northeast coast of Kefalonia called Ithaca, the home of the mythological hero Odysseus. Halkidiki – is made up of three peninsulas jutting into the Aegean Sea off the northern mainland. It is a truly unique destination. Best known for its many miles of golden coastline, soft sands and crystalline waters. Also famous for its natural diversity, with a host of interesting flora and fauna, along with some unique wildlife. Going to see the coast of Mount Athos is a must! Corfu – this is an island filled with great entertainment, traditional tavernas and stunning hotels, many overlooking the Aegean Sea. It is the second largest in the Ionians, whose history is bound with the the origins of Greek mythology, including two powerful water symbols, Poseidon and Asopos. Just off the West coast of Greece with a Mediterranean climate, this is a cosmopolitan island. Visitors can combine relaxation with an exciting evening social scene, stylish restaurants, as well as traditional tavernas, cafes and bars that offer traditional Greek cuisine. To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Mykonos – is one of the most luxurious of the Greek islands. There are boutique hotels and designer shops galore. It combines a vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches and an interesting history, to create the perfect holiday package. It is also blessed with a rich history, being within touching distance of the ancient holy site of Delos, birthplace of Apollo and his twin sister Artemis in ancient myth, ensuring that it is also great for people who enjoy cultural activities. Santorini – is a romantic island of majestic natural beauty; its Caldera cliffs drop into the sapphire waters of the Aegean Sea, creating some of the most spectacular scenery in the world and is widely photographed. Ideal for a

romantic holiday, but still with some nightlife. You can enjoy a cable car ride all the way to the bottom of the now extinct volcano and back again! To the south east of the island are the seaside resorts of Kamari and Perissa, with their long stretches of fine volcanic-sandy beaches, water-sports, lively bars and tavernas right along the strip. Whichever resort you choose, Santorini is a small enough island that everywhere can be reached within half-hour’s drive, giving ample opportunity for exploration! Other islands include Kos, Crete, Lefkada, Paxos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Zacknthos.

Ledbury Remembers, Ledbury Reflects

A

s this goes to press we will have our final planning meeting for Armistice Week, 11th to 17th November. You will see ‘Ledbury Remembers, Ledbury Reflects’ all over town. Poppies on railing posts outside the Alms Houses will only be part of the story. There will be exhibitions, and displays in shop windows. In the Master’s House, Caroline Owen-Thomas and her students will be showing calligraphy based on poems by the Dymock Poets. This is supported by information from the Friends of the Dymock Poets, who are also giving a poetry reading in the Burgage Hall on Friday 16th November, 5pm to 6pm – no tickets required. The Weaver’s Gallery, Church Lane will be hosting an exhibition of work by Ledbury Art Society, Ledbury Quilters and Ledbury Book Arts. More art and craft work will be on display at the Trumpet Corner Gallery. On Tuesday 13th Sara-Jane Arbury leads a poetry walk ‘Found Voices’ starting from the Master’s House at 7 p.m. (tickets £5). She will link 8 heritage sites through poems inspired by the words of the war poets and the buildings themselves. Not confirmed, there is a possibility that local artist blacksmith, Stephen McRae may be inviting us to find out more about the public artwork he has been commissioned to make, entitled ‘Remembrance’. Reflecting upon the gift of life and freedom has united us to use our skills in remembrance of all those who served to protect our safety. We hope you will join with us in your thoughts.

• Light fireworks at arms length and stand well back. • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode. • Children should always be supervised around fireworks. • Light sparklers once at a time wearing gloves, and always supervise children when using them. They should not be given to children under five. • Keep pets indoors and leave the TV on to distract them from the noise. • Do not set off fireworks after 11pm, or midnight on 5th November.

Bonfire and Firework Safety As bonfire night approaches, we would encourage people to attend a large organised display and follow the safety precautions set out by the organisers. However, it is understandable that families may want to hold their own firework displays. If you do decide to set fireworks off in a residential area, please consider your neighbours and follow this advice:

Fireworks • When buying fireworks always ensure they comply with the British Standard BS7114. This will be shown on the box and on the fireworks themselves. • You cannot buy or use fireworks if you are under 18, and fireworks should always only be handled by a responsible adult. • Always follow the instructions on each firework box, and keep them in enclosed in a box until use. Never keep them in your pocket.

26 26

• If you are setting your own fireworks off, please consider making your neighbours aware of your plans in advance, so it gives them the option to make alternative plans, or at least prepare themselves and their pets for the noise and disturbance fireworks can cause.

Bonfires • Always position bonfires well away from buildings, trees and fireworks. • Keep a distance from bonfires, and always supervise children around them. • Check that no animals are hiding inside the fire before lighting. • Build the fire so that it is stable and will not collapse outwards. • Never use flammable liquids to light the fire, such as petrol. Superintendent Sue Thomas said: "Please be a responsible and considerate member of your community. We all know the dangers of fireworks, however we often become complacent due to them being commonplace. Please be responsible, consider others within your community, act within the law, stay safe and help others stay safe."

Road Safety Week More than a third of people killed or seriously injured on UK roads are those travelling by bike. Cyclists and motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users in the UK, with more than 100 riders injured every day in needless, preventable crashes. The dangers (and opportunities) posed by bicycles and motorcycles are distinct but those on two wheels are united by the urgent need to reduce their risk of death and injury on our roads. Cycling is one of the healthiest, cheapest and most environmentally-friendly forms of transport available with the benefits to public health, congestion and the economy widely acknowledged. The number of us taking to our bicycles each year is increasing at a rapid pace and yet millions still don’t consider cycling an option. Delivering safe journeys for cyclists is a win/win, encouraging more people to cycle rather than drive, and keeping those who already do so safe. Motorcyclists are disproportionately involved in crashes and the resulting injuries are often severe. The speeds motorcycles can travel are equal to those of cars and yet motorcycle riders do not have equal protection in the event of a crash, such as air bags or side-impact bars, exposing them to the full force of impact. Raising awareness of safe driving behaviour for riders and drivers alike, and therefore limiting motorcycle crashes, is critical to saving lives on UK roads. This Road Safety Week (19th to 25th November) we are shouting about the safety of those on two wheels and encouraging everyone to be Bike Smart.

Dog for Sale . . . !! A man sees a sign outside a house: 'Talking Dog For Sale'. He rings the bell, the owner appears and tells him the dog can be viewed in the back garden, where he sees a very nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there. "Do you really talk?" he asks the dog. "Yes," the Labrador replies. After recovering from the shock of hearing the dog talk, the man asks, "So, tell me your story." The Labrador looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I joined the SAS. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one imagined that a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at Heathrow Airport to do some undercover security work, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded several medals. I got married, had a few puppies, and now I've just retired." The man is amazed. He goes back into the house and asks the owner how much he wants for the dog. "Ten quid," the owner says. "£10!!? But this dog is absolutely amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?" "Because," replied the owner, "he's a lying bas##*d ... he's never been out of the garden!" ********

N

ational Poetry Day last month marked the appointment of the first ever Troubadour of the Hills! This is a joint project between Ledbury Poetry Festival and Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Troubadour poet Jean Atkin says, “I hope during my time as Troubadour of the Hills that I can encourage many poets to pick up their pencils and write. Come along and join us on the Malverns – we plan workshops and walks in extraordinary places. But if you can’t get to these hills where three counties meet, then join in to share the poetry of your own hills through this project. I’m looking forward to reading small mountains of new poems.” As Troubadour of the Hills, Jean Atkin will lead workshops for local schoolchildren held in special locations on the Malvern Hills. Spring events will also offer the general public opportunities for exploring the Hills and little visited places in the area and to write poems about this special and remarkable landscape. Check in to the Festival website often for updates on the Troubadour of the Hills. The link is open NOW for poets of all abilities to upload their own poems inspired by either the Malvern Hills or any other hills. The poems will be shared in a special event at Ledbury Poetry Festival 2019. Ledbury Focus

In other news, the Festival’s important and valuable work in schools and the community continues. Poetry workshops which are free and open for all to attend are coming up in the following locations: Women’s Workshop: Church House, St Peter’s Close, Hereford, HR1 2DL - Wednesday 14th November, 10.30am to 12.30pm Herefordshire MIND: 130 Widemarsh Street, Hereford HR4 9HN - Wednesday 21st November, 10am to 12pm Segments at The Museum Resource and Learning Centre: 58 Friars Street, Hereford HR4 0AS - Wednesday 28th November, 10am to 12pm Other groups are taking place across the county with the Probation Service, Hereford Young Carers, schools, PRU’s and the NHS. If you have a group you feel would benefit from the Festival’s schools and community programmes, get in touch below. And the popular Poetry Salons resume in a new location! The next one features Jean BoaseBeier and will be held at Ledbury Books and Maps, 20 High Street, Ledbury on Tuesday 27th November 7pm to 9pm. Entry costs £5. These are opportunities to expand your enjoyment of

poetry through readings and conversation. You can also perform your own poems to a friendly and welcoming audience and meet other writers At the time of writing, this year’s international Poetry Competition is still being judged. Check the winners on the website – there may be someone you know among them! If you missed any of this year’s Festival events, 43 podcasts are available to stream or download for free! Check the website, and while there enter the Festival’s new Unity Lottery with a weekly top prize of £25,000! ith November, comes the prospect of fireworks.

Many pets become anxious and frightened when fireworks are going off and unlike us, they do not understand why there are loud bangs and bright flashes outside. The most human thing to do, when our pets are distressed is to comfort and reassure them – sadly however, this can sometimes make the situation worse because we are actually re-enforcing that there is something to be frightened of. Signs that your pet may be fearful, may include the following: ■■ Ears back ■■ Excessive panting ■■ Drooling ■■ Trembling or Shaking ■■ Cowering or hiding behind/ under furniture ■■ Barking excessively ■■ Less interaction with family members or other pets

your pets this November ■■ Keep doors, windows and cat flaps closed after dusk

cats - this is available as a plug in diffuser or spray.

■■ Take your dog for a walk, well before the fireworks are likely to begin

■■ We also have a number of calming agents, such as Zylkene and Calmex, which are very beneficial if used in plenty of time. In severe cases sedation may be indicated but this is usually a last resort.

■■ Have the curtains drawn and lights on – this will help to mask the flashes ■■ Have the television or radio on slightly louder than normal – this will help to drown out the bangs ■■ For owners of Rabbits & Guinea Pigs. please provide extra bedding hay so that your pet has somewhere to hide and cover the hutch with blankets to mask the flashes and reduce the loud bangs ■■ There are a couple pheromone based products we recommend for dogs and cats. Adaptil for dogs - this is available as a plug in diffuser, collar, spray or express tablets. Feliway for

Please also be aware of horses during the season, and if you are having a firework party please inform your neighbours if they have horses, so that they can be shut in. We are frequently called to horses which have sustained injuries after firework parties, so please be responsible if you are doing so. For an assessment of your pet’s needs during the Firework season, please contact a member of our team for advice on 01531 632276

worth buying quality tools from a recommended, reputable, manufacturer. Here are some helpful hints on buying tools:

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Buying Tools & Shrubs in Autumn

T

Secateurs – if you buy the most expensive tools, they are likely to last you and will usually come with guarantees. I would always recommend bypass secateurs (the blades pass each other, rather than touch each other), mainly because if you take notches out eventually the blades on standard secateurs wear where they don’t touch each other. The result is that you won’t get a nice clean cut. Bypass secateurs on the other hand, will maintain blade sharpness, because the blades pass each other.

Spades – again quality is very important. You are basically use a spade as a lever, so a very strong shaft is always good; not necessarily wooden, but the taller If your garden is looking a bit dull the better. Measure it up to this is a good time to pick up plants yourself; if you get a small one then Some people are intent on getting that are flowering at this time of the you will end up compromising plants or even buying tools with year, when a lot of the plants in your back muscles when doing a lot the idea of doing a bit of a ‘blitz’ on your garden have died back. of digging - there are various sizes the garden, but now is not the time With regard to buying tools, people on the market. Don’t haste out; are welded onto the shaft and this now, at the right time of year, you other people will put garden tool is the point where it will bend or will36 find stuff that is in flower. To advertise on their Christmas list. Stainless steel will stop the call 01684 833715 email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk he garden and all the herbaceous plants are now starting to die back, especially after the first frost, and the garden begins to look a bit bare.

Some specimens have been forced on so it is a good idea to look at the label.

which makes it a little more expensive. Battery powered mowers are now starting to come into their own. If you only have a small lawn and it is a bind to get an electric mower out, negotiating power source and cables, etc., then I would certainly recommend considering the new battery mowers that are available these days. Hedge Cutters – these can either be electric or fuel driven (i.e. petrol) but battery operated versions are certainly starting to be the way forwards. mud from sticking to the spade because of the metal’s shiny surface and is something to look out for. Shears – yet again, quality is better. Basically the blades passing each other, cutting through something, so need to be strong steel in order to pass each other without bending out of shape, which is easily done with cheaper kit. Usually the most expensive ones will not normally come as a multi-pack (i.e. you get a pair of loppers, a pair of shears and secateurs as a set), so that is something to watch out for. Lawnmowers – this is the time when lawnmowers are on offer and stores are trying to move their summer stock at a discount. When you are buying lawnmowers make sure that it has multiple settings so the blades will go down low and up high. If you want lines on your lawn, it is always better to get a roller on the back of your mower; it comes complete with the mower,

Stepladders – people are starting to cut hedges now, and ladders are a necessity. You can get very standard stepladders, but they can be awkward to store away. Innovative multipurpose ladders are available on the market that will fold into different positions in order to suit multiple tasks: they can lean over a hedge or become a platform for cutting hedges. They are not hugely expensive and if you look about you can find the right bit of kit for your particular needs. It is pointless getting something too big that is more difficult to take out and use than is practical for the job. Likewise you don’t want to buy something too small for your needs that won’t do everything you want it to. A lot of people ask for tools for Christmas. I would advise getting a catalogue and marking down your choice or get the catalogue numbers off the internet, and give these to family or friends who are offering to buy the tools as a gift. This way you know you are getting

what you want. There’s nothing worse than when a family member or friend buys you something that isn’t up for the job; you will be disappointed and it can be difficult to send something like a lawnmower back to the supplier. The same goes for buying plants. When you are stuck for things to do, there are some landscaper gardeners who will compile a planting plan for your garden and family members can then phone in and buy items from the planting list. So, if you have just had a landscaped border done and you are struggling for Christmas presents, this is a good gift suggestion option. Once the planting plan has been finalised you can then circulate it to your family members and friends to select their gift choice from the list. They can then either phone the landscaper direct to order their selected plant option or put money towards your planting budget. In spring time or whenever it is convenient, you can then get your border planted up with the generous contributions from family and friends. This can also be done for garden designs. If you are moving into a new home - for instance a starter home - and would like to have your garden laid out to your personal specifications, but don’t know the way forward, you can get people to come together to create a garden plan. We have started doing a lot more of these over the last few years and is certainly something to consider if you are stuck for Christmas presents.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Purple Moments W

andering through the same young woodland where ‘pinky' grew - now identified by a kind reader of this column, as probably a natural aberration of a southern marsh orchid - I discovered another purple phenomena making me wonder if there was something in the soil. However this was much easier to identify, a purple mushroom which I believe is an amethyst deceiver. A cluster of them were growing under a sweet chestnut, prickly with this year’s nuts and beginning to turn golden even in September. Fungi fascinate me. Neither plant nor animal, they exist in a mysterious world of their own and come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours; some small brown ones under the oak tree grew so large they reminded me of armadillos. Although they can be harmful, they are also vital in our lives from medicines to making foods like bread, cheeses and beer. Fungi also enhance plant growth and without their abilities to decompose once living things, I doubt we would be able to live on the planet. Ledbury Focus

It would seem that I’m on the hedgehog network as I now have multiple numbers in the garden. This year has been hard for our prickly friends. The dry summer meant the ground was too hard for them to excavate the soil for food. The dry ground has forced worms ever deeper, and slugs, beetles and other invertebrates remained undercover. Lack of water also meant that many hedgehogs became dehydrated. With food and water in short supply I have been feeding my little colony of hedgehogs since August when I first became aware of them in the garden. There were a few days in October when the dogs enjoyed the untouched food, but I still keep putting it out as every now and then the hedgehogs return to it. There are food alternatives which are equally easy to obtain and make a tasty change of diet, windfall apples and pears being one of them. Mrs Tiggywinkles’ website - that now famous hedgehog rescue centre - tells me I

must continue feeding my clan of ‘hogs’ until at least mid-December depending on weather conditions. And then, even if I think it’s cold enough for them to hibernate, I must continue to put food out for them for a few days afterwards. All this requires quite a lot of nighttime observation and to do so without causing too much disturbance I’ve decided to invest in a night vision monocular. I have two clans of hedgehog: househogs, so christened because they seem to reside near the house and are not bothered by torchlight or anything else, and hedgehogs who scurry away at the slightest sign of a torch. article & photograph by Geraldine Woods-Humphery

Long-tailed Tits - photo courtesy of Amy Lewis

Tree planting - photo courtesy of Ross Hoddinott

What to see this month November is a great month for bird watching! Lots of migrant birds are now arriving to spend the winter in the UK such as redwing and fieldfares. Last winter’s snow saw many of these birds venture into towns and gardens but you may have to head out into the countryside to spot them this year – old orchards with clusters of windfall apples that they can feed on are a good place to start. As the leaves are now falling from the trees, bird watching becomes a bit easier too as birds are silhouetted against autumn skies. Many small birds such as long-tailed tits flock together over winter, chattering to each other as they make their way from tree to tree.

What to do this month

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's Guide to a

Wild November! 48

It’s a good time of year to undertake work on garden ponds now by taking out excessive plant growth and leaf litter. Ponds are usually in a dormant phase by November so this is a good time to get stuck in with minimal disturbance to your pond’s wildlife. It’s always good practice to leave any vegetation you remove on the edge of the pond for a few hours to allow any invertebrates to return to the pond before you compost the discarded plants and leaves.

A Bell to Remember Ledbury Focus

The last time that there was a project to restore and repair the bells, their frame and fittings was in 1951. This initiative was led by poet John Masefield. He wrote at the time, with reference to his childhood memories of St Michael’s Church, “More than I can describe, I loved its voice, the magical great music of its bells that rang such glorious peals on occasions such as Christmas…”. Now, 67 years later, the bells are in need of further major attention if they are going to continue to ring out across the town for decades and, indeed, centuries to come. We have decided, also, to add two additional bells in order to give us a more harmonious ring of six bells when we do not have enough people to ring all eight, and in order to make it easier to teach people in Ledbury to ring: it is a truly fascinating and rewarding hobby that is in no way restricted to those who go to the church. We welcome all comers.

I

n November 1918 the Ledbury Guardian & Herefordshire Advertiser published an account of how the news of the armistice on 11th November reached the town. You can almost feel the joyful sense of relief even 100 years later: “Shop assistants and workpeople rushed into the streets, the children and tradespeople did ditto, and in a twinkling there was a remarkable display of flags flying, and practically every child was bearing a flag….. In the afternoon.…the bell ringers rang joyous peals on the parish church bells…. In the evening the bells again rang out merrily and the Cadets and Girl Guides paraded at the Church Room and marched to church for evensong”. Bells have rung out across Ledbury for more than 1,000 years. The oldest of the current bells in the tower dates back to 1690 when a new ring of 8 bells, attached to wheels in a way that is uniquely English, were installed. Their main purpose has always been communication: to tell the time of day, to tell the town that there is an event in the church (a regular service, a wedding, a funeral, a special celebration). They were rung in joyful celebration on 11th November 1918, just as they had been rung to celebrate the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot, the coronations and deaths of successive monarchs and a host of other national and, indeed, local events.

We want to offer one of these new bells for sponsorship to the people of Ledbury. It will be “a bell to remember” - to remember the 85 people of Ledbury who died in the Great War (and others in conflicts since), four of whom, as it happens, were bell-ringers, and to remember that peace is a blessing that we should not take lightly, and for which we should continue to work in any way that we can. This bell will be in the tower for centuries to come with an appropriate inscription reminding successive generations in Ledbury that we value and work for peace in our town, as well as in our country. The launch event for “A bell to remember” will be in church at 6.00pm on Tuesday 13th November. Please come along to find out more about this project and to ask questions. Refreshments will be provided. There will be a chance afterwards to come and see the ringers in action in the tower. Two days before this, starting at about 12.30pm on 11th November, we hope to complete a full peal (about 3 hours 15 minutes of fierce concentration and effort!) to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice and hope that, as the bells ring out over the town, its people will sense again, as they did 100 years ago, a combination of joy at the restoration of peace tinged with sombre reflection about the human costs of war. If you want to learn to ring or to find out more about what we do, please contact me on 07577 720154 or thkeyes28@hotmail.com. Tim Keyes Tower Captain at St Michael’s

It is intriguing to imagine what was posted at that time which warranted a £120 stamp and it is obvious to see why the higher value stamps are so much rarer than the lower values. The whole album was a treasure trove of interesting stamps, including some sought after triangular stamps from the Cape of Good Hope and some good examples of early Chinese stamps. Lamb Tagine Lamb, spices and fruit combine to make this tangy Moroccan dish. This recipe uses pears and sultanas, but apricots also works very well. Serve with rice, seasonal veg or creamy mash.

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp olive 2 large onions, peeled and 1kg lamb, cut into cubes 1tsp dried cumin 1tsp dried coriander 1tsp ground ginger 1tsp ground cinnamon pinch salt to taste 1tsp ground black pepper 4 pears, peeled, cored and cubed 75g sultanas fresh coriander to garnish Serves 4

METHOD

yy In a large heavy-bottomed pan or flame proof casserole, heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the onion and fry until soft. yy Add the lamb, frying until slightly browned on the outside. Add the cumin, ground coriander, ginger and cinnamon, then season to taste with the salt and pepper. yy Add some water to the pot - just enough to cover the lamb - then place the lid on the pot and simmer on low for 1½ to 2 hours until the lamb is tender. If there is too much liquid, you can uncover the pot half way through the cooking process yy Add the chopped pears and sultanas, mix through thoroughly and cook for a further five minutes, until the fruit is soft. yy Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with the fresh coriander.

Bowen Treatment for Digestive Health by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK, KFRP

Diet & Lifestyle The health of your gut is critical to your overall health. The delicate balance of your digestive system is vital to feeling healthy and well, this also has a very direct link to the way we feel psychologically and emotionally. The digestive system in holistic terms is often referred to as the second brain. Our gut contains twice as much serotonin as our brain, it is clear, that a balanced digestive system is vital. Both diet and lifestyle are important factors in establishing and maintaining good digestive health. Getting enough hydration is also vitally important, as is taking regular exercise that works for your body type. Another very important factor here concerns minimising stress and inflammation as much as possible. Taking steps to reduce the stress you experience in your life will serve to help your health on so many levels including helping your digestion and absorption. You are what you absorb Forget about being 'you are what you eat', in reality, you are what you can absorb. It might be that you are eating very healthily and doing everything right most of the time, but still, your digestive problems persist. This could be to do with absorption and the way your body works as per your own

unique physiology. Some people for example simply cannot digest certain foods. Some people may be able to digest certain foods with the aid of a specific digestive enzyme. We are all very unique in terms of our body biochemistry. As I hinted at above, digestive health can also be linked to stress and/or emotional problems. The Bowen Technique for digestive health We have many procedures within the Bowen Technique that can address digestive health, all of these procedures aim to get the body working correctly once more. The Bowen moves literally communicate with the brain via the nervous system that is being activated whilst we are working on the muscles, tendons and ligaments when addressing specific areas of the body. Respiratory / Digestive procedure: This is generally my go-to procedure to help the body to start working at its optimum in terms of digestive and respiratory health at a physiological level. The procedure also helps the body relax and re-balance and people often report improvements with emotional and stress related problems including depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Stress and emotional issues can often be the root cause of both digestive and respiratory related symptoms. I have found Bowen to be invaluable when treating an individual’s digestive problems from a physiological perspective and also in addressing stress or emotional imbalance that might be causing other physical problems.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

The procedure can also often kick-start sluggish digestion, and metabolism significantly. Oesophagus procedure: This procedure is particularly useful when a person has difficulty swallowing and or constriction in the Oesophagus. If heartburn is a problem then this procedure can be used to address that. We might also use this procedure when a person presents with problems associated with their voice. It is useful for singers and can help restore health to the vocal chords. The procedure may also address tightness in the diaphragm. Navel procedure: This procedure is well indicated when there are general digestive problems present along with lowered vitality. It is often also used when emotional symptoms are present such as anxiety, depression, grief and has been used with PTSD. Abdominal procedure: This procedure can be used with hernia problems, general griping pain in the abdomen and is useful for tight rectus adominous muscles. Colon procedure: This procedure is well indicated to be used when colon problems such as Colitis, Crohns and IBS are presented. We would also use this when an individual is struggling with constipation or sluggish elimination. Gall bladder procedure: We have several procedures and protocol that can work with Gall Bladder issues. The issues indicated for use include: swollen or uncomfortable Gall bladder; pain around the right rib cage and or under the right scapula; bloating, flatulence and burping; dizziness and in some extreme cases blurred vision. We also have a protocol which addresses the Ileocaecal valve, which is vitally important for the proper functioning of the digestive system. Problems that have responded well to Bowen digestive work include: In practice, I use the digestive procedures a lot and I have found that a multitude of symptoms and issues seem to respond well to this work, as follows: • Gastro-intestinal symptoms: ▪▪ Abdominal discomfort i.e. colic, hiatus hernia and indigestion ▪▪ Bloating ▪▪ Heart burn ▪▪ Nausea ▪▪ Malabsorption issues • Liver, pancreatic or gallbladder problems • Diaphragm problems and tightness Ledbury Focus

• Stress, shock, anxiety, grief Remedies to help digestive health Some of my go to remedies to help with digestive health include: Digestive enzymes – These are a group of enzymes that break down food into digestible matter, they are present in the body but sometimes people do not produce enough of them or enough of specific enzymes in order to process and absorb nutrients from the foods that they eat. Stress is a major factor in disrupting our production of digestive enzymes so people might benefit from taking these in periods of stress. L Glutamine – This is an amino acid that is essential for the processing of proteins. It also helps protect the gut wall. Often in periods of stress the body requires more of this amino acid. Pre and Pro biotics – These essentially restore the gut flora to its optimal state of health. Many people now chose to take these daily or after specific illness and using specific gut disrupting medication such as antibiotics. Bach flower remedies – There are several Bach remedies that work on the emotional states that brig about imbalance in the digestive system. The wellknown remedy for calming the system as a whole is 5 flower remedy / rescue remedy. This is a blend of 5 Bach remedies and is suggested for use in stressful situations. Homeopathic remedies - Nux Vom, Lycopodium, Arsenicum all have very specific actions on the digestive system. There are many homeopathic remedies that are used for digestive health and I can look at these in practice with each individual client. NB: It is always best to seek the advice of a qualified practitioner before taking anything without checking. I always test clients to assess whether they require specific vitamins, minerals, nutrients and remedies. Wellness Workshop I am holding a half day workshop on the 24th November, 10am to 2pm in Corse, Gloucestershire. In the workshop, I will show you several techniques that can be used on a daily basis to enhance general health and wellbeing. Specifically, we will learn how to calm the stress response, balance the meridians, balance blood chemistry, reduce fatigue, boost the immune system, feel strong and healthy and much more! For further information, or to book your place please get in touch.

Winter Bazaar E

very year the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust holds a Winter Bazaar in St Katherine’s Hall. This year’s bazaar is on 10th November from 9.30am to 3pm and entry is free.

We have a wide range of goods on sale making this a an ideal opportunity to buy your Christmas presents in good time and in comfort. This year’s wares include silk and knitted scarves, speciality preserves, hand-turned wooden items, knitted handbags and accessories from Ledbury’s own “bag lady”, handmade silver jewellery and gifts, lace knit scarves and shawls in mainly silk blends, silk scarves and knitted goods, beautiful sand-blasted glassware, cards and a range of goods from the National Trust, including many seasonal bargains. As well as all the above, the Trust has its own stall and up to date information on the progress of the canal restoration. We also hold a raffle for a really superb Christmas hamper. The draw is taken on the day and last year’s lucky winners were a young family, who join a long list of delighted recipients. If you don’t need to shop for Christmas, then just come along to share the festive occasion and have a feast. We serve the most mouth-watering homemade cakes, tea and coffee through the day, plus homemade soups with a roll at lunchtime. All the refreshments are at an extremely reasonable price! The Canal Trust is working to rebuild the 34 mile canal between Hereford City and the River Severn at Gloucester to full navigation standards and to provide a financially independent, sustainable amenity for the people of the two counties and beyond.

68

Come and shop, share the friendly festive atmosphere, eat all you can at very little cost, learn about the canal and give yourself a chance to win a magnificent Christmas hamper for just £1. The photos give you a taster of what last year’s bazaar was like. See you there?

Hedgehog Paradise? H

edgehogs are in decline in the UK, but Ledbury however seems to have many colonies. So how can we encourage our little prickly neighbours who do much good in our gardens, and make this a safe area for them? Territory Hedgehogs travel round their large territory all night long. They need to be able to enter and leave each garden through at least two entrances. These only need to be four inches square to enable your local hogs to add your plot to their nightly route. Make sure that you don’t make escape possible for your neighbour’s dog! Shelter They will gather dead leaves and make a nest beneath log piles, bonfires, sheds and other places that offer shelter from rain and cold. Be very careful to check all bonfires before lighting them. In mid-winter, hedgehogs need a dry place with a good depth of insulation. Some hog-houses for sale are so shallow they do not provide enough insulation unless they are also covered with a pile of leaves. Food Hogs will eat a variety of things, including insects, slugs, earthworms and seeds. The easiest way to feed them is to put sunflower hearts down on your patio or path each evening after the birds have roosted. Your hogs will also need a large bowl/saucer of fresh water. Ledbury Focus

Observation Hedgehogs have poor eyesight. You can walk up to patio doors and watch them eating and fighting on the other side and listen to all their different sounds and they will not see you. They do however have excellent hearing. The slightest sound and they will freeze and/or run away – and they can run very fast! Once you have a family of hogs visiting a webcam makes a good Christmas present.

parasites - they will kill the hog as well. ‘Diatomaceous Earth’ can safely be sprinkled onto their prickles to kill fleas, and a local vet will remove ticks.

Health & Development Female hedgehogs are pregnant for approximately 37 days and hoglets will spend about 11 days in the nest. Hoglets weigh around 10 grams at birth, and approximately 80 grams when they leave the nest.

The nearest hedgehog rescue centre is run locally by Jilly McAree who can be contacted on 01531 670837.

Before they can hibernate they need to weigh at least 500gms. Any hoglets born late in the summer will not reach sufficient weight before the cold weather sets in around mid-October, at which time, if you can, catch them and take them to the local rescue centre (details below) to be kept warm and fed until spring. By November if you see a small hog at any time, or if you see an adult roaming in daylight, it needs help.

To catch a hog, approach silently and wear gloves - their prickles are sharp! Hedgehogs are fascinating animals to watch and with everyone on board, Ledbury can be a real hedgehog sanctuary.

The local rescue needs more hutches – if you have one to spare, please contact Joan Wakeling on 07771 716691. article & photos by Joan Wakeling

Hogs that are not well also suffer from ticks and fleas and will scratch. Do not use flea treatments to kill

Last Night of the Proms . . . Ledbury Style!

edbury does London with its own version of The Last Night of the Proms performed in stunning style by the Ledbury Brass Band playing to a full house at the Ledbury Market Theatre.

The Brass Band saw members of the audience dressed in posh attire and fancy hats, enthusiastically entering into the spirit of the Proms by creating a sea of fluttering union flags. The popular programme including Jerusalem, Amazing Grace, the National Anthem, Land of Hope and Glory (which was led by soloist Bridget Snasdell), had music fans singing and applauding, concluding with a standing ovation to illustrate their appreciation of extraordinary talent, great fun and excitement. Musical Director Colin Herbert who gave a solo performance playing the Euphonium, clearly enjoying every moment, commented that the Band was formed in 2010 and has gone from strength to strength. Appearing at many of Ledbury’s public events such as the Carnival, Remembrance Sunday and other community occasions the Band enjoys the continued support of music lovers everywhere, and there will be another opportunity to hear them at the Ledbury Market Theatre as they stage a Christmas Special on Sunday 16th December at 7.30pm. article and photos by Jan Long
