Hello Readers... Welcome to the July issue of the Ledbury Focus. According to my calendar, summer is here, but at the time of writing this, I’m looking out at a grey sky on a rather chilly day, so I’m not sure the weather people got the email! Let’s hope that by the time you actually read this that the weather will have improved.

Ledbury Focus Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 3 Rye Street • Birtsmorton • WR13 6AS Tel: 01684 833715  Mob: 07754 170286 info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Coming up this month, we first have the Ledbury Celebration on Sunday 8th July, which sounds like it will be another great event for Ledbury. Last month’s Community Day was a brilliant success, and thank you to everyone who took the time to come and talk to me about the Ledbury Focus.

Editor Betty-Ann Ambury betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

On Sunday 22nd July, The Cinnamon Trust will be holding their annual ‘Animals R Magic’ event at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre. Do go along and support this very worthwhile cause – it’s a great day out, and you’ll get to meet some lovely animals, and their equally lovely owners.

After that, there’s the Welland Steam & Country Rally on 27th, 28th and 29th July. Again, an event not to be missed.

Well, despite the rather gloomy weather, summer is well and truly with us at last, so if you are planning on a holiday away, whether it’s somewhere in the UK or abroad, I hope you have a wonderful time. We’re off to Malta for ten days of sunshine and seafood, and a healthy dash of the very excellent Maltese wines!

Keeping Cool in Hot Weather • Use sun screen of at least factor 15. • If you are travelling by car or public transport always take a bottle of water with you.

W

• Avoid strenuous activity and limit activities like housework and gardening to the early morning or evening when it is cooler.

Hot weather is more likely to cause health problems for older people for a variety of reasons, including age-related physical changes in the body, chronic health conditions, and even side effects of taking some medications.

• When inside, try to stay in the coolest part of your home.

e all look forward to a good summer. However, there are occasions when very high temperatures and humidity can present a risk to health.

Top tips for staying cool: • Keep a check on the weather forecast and then you will be able to plan your activities accordingly. • Keep out of the heat. Stay inside during the hottest time of the day – late morning to mid-afternoon. • If you do go out, wear a hat and keep in the shade as much as possible. Ledbury Focus

• Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun. • Keep windows shut while it’s cooler inside than out and open them when it gets cooler. • Wear loose, light weight, light coloured clothing and a light weight broad brimmed hat. • Take cool baths or showers. • Splash your face with cold water of place a damp cloth or scarf on the back of your neck to help you cool off.

• Drink lots of fluids – even if you are not thirsty. Stick to cool water, clear juices, and other liquids that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine can increase dehydration. • Eat normally but try to have more cold foods, particularly salads and fruit as they contact a lot of water. • If you live alone consider asking a relative or friend to visit or phone to check that you are not having difficulties during periods of extreme heat. • If you have a neighbour, friend or relative who lives alone, keep in touch with them to make sure they are okay. Swift work by

Ledbury Naturalists' Field Club T

he Ledbury Naturalists' Field Club have been working swiftly to help birds in Ledbury. The Club was founded in 1967 to give local people with an interest in natural history, the opportunity of furthering and sharing knowledge. Today the Club thrives and activities include walks, talks and surveys and this summer members are endeavouring to find swift nest sites. The swift is a summer migrant, arriving in this country to breed in early May. When not nesting, amazingly swifts spend all of their time in flight, even sleeping in the air. On summer evenings, swifts will fly rapidly around their nesting area, screaming noisily.

Now managed by Ledbury Places, a local organization set up to conserve historic buildings whilst maximising their benefit for the public; the two organisations are working together to help the town's swifts. The Ledbury Naturalists' Field Club have funded the purchase of six swift nesting boxes, and builders undertaking renovations for Ledbury Places will be erecting the boxes high on outside walls of the old library. This will provide long term nest sites for these wonderful birds.

The Ledbury Naturalists' Field Club will be looking for swifts in Ledbury over the summer and are keen to work with local residents and organisations to safeguard the town's birds. If you know of any local swift nest sites, or are interested in helping to fund this project by sponsoring a swift nest box, please contact the Secretary of the Ledbury Naturalists' Field club by emailing admin@ ledburynaturalists.co.uk or telephone Kate Wollen on 07521 150700.

They feed on insects and although their natural nest sites are crevices in caves or cliffs, in Britain they nest almost exclusively in buildings especially older ones with gaps that allow access to the roof space. Club members have become increasingly concerned that swifts could be under threat locally when nest sites get blocked if building renovation work takes place. The Barrett– Browning Institute, which until recently was home to Ledbury’s Library, is one such building. Ledbury Focus

he Hereford branch of the NSPCC is celebrating 125 years this year. Lucy Hurds, chairman of the branch, is hoping 125 companies in the county will sign up to raise £125 each in the next year, with all the money raised being spent in Herefordshire. NSPCC stands for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. It means that each of us has a responsibility to keep childhood free from abuse, and we must do everything possible to protect children and prevent abuse from happening. Mrs Hurds said: "People tend to think it is a problem in big cities or somewhere else. There are quite a lot of our children that get support. It averages out at two children in every class that needs support."

Kidwells has signed up On the last weekend of July (27, 28th and 29th), the Kidwells team plans to walk 125km (77 miles) around the market towns of Herefordshire in three days with the aim of raising £1,250! The planned route is a round trip from Hereford taking in the county towns of Leominster, Bromyard, Ledbury and Ross on Wye. The aim is to reach Ledbury by 1.30pm on the Saturday for a lunch stop and to meet our business sponsors. edbury Carpets & Interiors was founded in 1980 by Richie and Jane Grice.

Since inception the company’s aim has always been to supply quality products, providing value for money, and a service second to none. This business ethic has seen the company grow from strength to strength. After nearly 40 years in Ledbury, Richie and Jane are now stepping back as they start their new journey towards retirement, and they are handing over the reins to joint directors, Jonathan Thomas and Neil Davies. Jon says “It is an exciting opportunity to take over the day-to-day running of such a successful business as Ledbury Carpets & Interiors, even more so with Neil as a partner.” Neil agrees, ”I have worked with Jon on and off for the last 25 years or so, and we have a great relationship in and out of work. We’re looking forward to the challenge of taking the company forward and maintaining the high standards for which it has always

been known. We both have known Richie and Jane for number of years, and would like to wish them well for the future.” Jon and Neil both previously worked for Chadds of Hereford; Neil in both the Carpet and Furnishing departments while Jon progressed through the ranks to manage the Flooring department before leaving in January 2006 to join Ledbury Carpets & Interiors. He stayed until 2015 before opening his own shop in Worcester. Although Jon has been pleased with the progress made in Worcester, he felt that this was too good an opportunity to miss. Neil has been with the company since November 2007 and has been directly responsible for the growth of the soft furnishing department. Richie and Jane will of course still be available to offer help and advice as and when needed, and would like to extend their thanks to Neil and Jon for taking up the challenge. Richie and Jane’s son, Steve, has been a great help building and managing an evolving website where

always tried to make our customers welcome, give them the best advice and guidance in a friendly way, and encouraged my staff to do the same. As a result, many of the customers I've had the pleasure of serving I now consider as friends.”

A special mention goes to Office Manager, Dawn Andrews, for her dedication since joining us in the early 1980's. Dawn is sure to provide the same help and commitment in the foreseeable future

Finally from Richie, a massive thank-you to his wife Jane, for all the hard work and support she has provided from behind the scenes.

Ledbury Carpets & Interiors’ motto has always been, and will always be ‘Quality, Value and Service’, and this is as true today as it’s always been, and Jon and Neil have no intention of changing that. With Neil’s knowledge of curtains and blinds, and Jon’s extensive experience in the flooring trade, it’s a recipe for success! Richie comments “Running a specialised business with all the various facets involved, can be very challenging, but I've

WANTED : Good Samaritans THE LEDBURY FOOD BANK

nobody in need is ever turned away!

vegetables, as well as the items on the “menu” of most food banks - who only give out tinned and packaged food. We can do this as a direct result of the unbelievable generosity of local people who give us the most wonderful support. They bring us money and food, and they also put food into our trolleys in Tesco and the Co-op. We have a devoted band of smiling volunteers who man the food bank for a couple of hours in the morning of each Wednesday and Friday.

Ledbury Food Bank is in a strong position. We give out fresh food such as bread, cheese, bacon, and fresh fruit and

But one thing is missing. Many of those who need the food to support their families and dependants, just don’t seem to be able to step over our threshold. Vouchers are issued by almost all the local health, social and administrative bodies, but it is not necessary to have one for a first visit. Everybody gets a warm welcome and

People wanting to get in touch with Ledbury Food Bank can call us on 07581 283092 during opening hours, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 12 noon, or they can visit us at St Katherine’s between those times. Alternatively, they can email us at food@ledburyfoodbank.org. Nobody in urgent need of food is ever turned away empty handed.

t Ledbury Food Bank, we know that there are cases of malnutrition. We know that many are living below the poverty line. We know that many have had their benefits cut or delayed. And above all we know that many of these people are not coming to see us, and that is very regrettable.

So what do we ask of the Good Samaritans among us? Please help us when you see or hear about those who need our help. It is not easy to get people to come for the first time - we know that! But helping those in need to get back on their feet is a worthy and rewarding cause. A full stomach helps those in need to fight their other emotional dragons. Please help us to find our missing visitors!

Wines – With Definition

W

hat is in a title? Well, quite a lot, actually, as I found out. I have discovered a range of excellent wines, with just that label-Definition. Capturing the quintessential qualities of great wine styles of the world, via some exceptional winemakers, I ventured through the Definition range and really enjoyed my findings of these wines, which have something for all tastes and palates. Definition Chardonnay is a most impressive production, utilising the very popular grape of the same name. From Limoux, France, this white wine has an appealing bouquet. I found the mouthfeel and palate sensation to have good fruit flavours and wonderful to accompany white meats, fish and seafood dishes. Sauvignon Blanc is a further, extremely popular, dry white and the Definition production has everything to be hoped for, in this splendid wine from New Zealand. Again, superb to pair with fish, seafood and white meats, this wine is chosen, by many. Definition Rioja Reserva, from northern Spain, is matured in oak barrels. I found this wine to have a very good nose of red fruits, which leads, enticingly, to the distinctive flavour. This very impressive, rich, red wine, pairs perfectly with red meats, etc. Definition Claret, from the renowned region of Bordeaux, France, has numerous

Ledbury Focus

devotees. Great to accompany a lot of cuisine, this outstanding, red wine will not disappoint. Other impressive productions in the Definition range include, Chablis, Pinot Grigio, Sancerre, Provence Rosé, Côtes du Rhône, Pinot Noir, Malbec and sparkling Prosecco. Everyone has their favourite and this exceptional range of highquality wines has something for all. I located these productions at Majestic Wine, a company offering a very extensive range of drinks that includes wines, spirits, beers, ciders and nonalcoholic beverages, too. Customer satisfaction is paramount and advice is always available, from their very knowledgeable staff. Majestic Wine’s Definition range I found to have excellent whites, powerful reds and a really good sparkling Prosecco, which is great for all occasions, including parties and events. For all details of wines and drinks, free tastings, discounts, plus free delivery and free glass hire, please visit www.majestic.co.uk. As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Wasps and Hornets L

ife is full of first experiences. Some we hold dear in our memories, some we’d rather forget. The ‘first’ I experienced this spring was one I’d rather forget, but sadly won’t. Until May this year I’d never been stung by a wasp, a bumble bee or a hornet. I exclude honey bees because as a child I was stung by one of my father’s which had got into my nightie during a swarming. My ‘first’ this time was not a dissimilar story. A queen, emerging from winter hibernation and still rather dopey had made its way into my bed. Oblivious of the danger I climbed in beneath the duvet only to spring back out again. Pain was shooting through my foot as if I’d been stabbed. I flung back the duvet to find a queen hornet crawling over the sheet. Using a handy T-shirt I swooped her up in it and hopped to the window to shake her outside Ledbury Focus- after all it

wasn’t the hornet’s fault , and remembering the Monty Python song, ‘Always look on the bright side of life,’ I had only been stung on the foot. Several hours of ice pack and vinegar compress later, I was finally able to get to bed, but my foot was very sore for several days. Common wasps and hornets, both from the same family, are not the bad guys … no really, they’re not. They’re a gardener’s friend, eating other insects, caterpillars and aphids we’d rather not have munching through our precious plants. Wasps are also significant pollinators. Wasps and hornets have amazing skills and private lives. Astonishing architects, both wasps and hornets will create spectacular nests from chewed wood which they turn into a kind of paper with their saliva. Both insects are social and live in colonies. The new queen

emerges in spring to lay a few eggs in the nucleus of her nest called the petiole. When these hatch she feeds the larvae on chewed insects until they pupate and become adult, sterile workers who then take over the job of nest building while the queen concentrates on egg laying. Some of these will be queens, some drones, or male workers. Nest building continues to accommodate the ever increasing numbers of broods and reaches its maximum size by the end of the summer when the new queens will fly off to mate with drones from other nests. The old queen and her workers die off in the colder weather while the newly fertilised queens hibernate over winter. My queen hornet is nesting in my attic totally unaware of the pain she’s caused me, as she busily goes about continuing the fascinating life story of the wasp family. or wildlife watchers the summer months are when insect life is most abundant and the best time to get to know moths, dragonflies, crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, bugs and all our other amazing creatures. Tracking down and identifying ‘minibeasts’ is a great way to engage children in nature too. There are many butterflies on

the wing in mid-summer: small tortoiseshells, red admirals, peacocks, painted ladies, commas, speckled woods, large whites, green-veined whites, and small whites are just the butterflies you may have visiting your garden! Visit other habitats and you will discover some of our rarer butterflies too. On summer evenings bats are at their most active. Look for them just after sunset in woodlands, parks and larger gardens. It’s difficult to identify different species without using special bat

detectors which detect the sounds they make. Pipistrelles are the commonest of the small bats and brown longeared the most widely distributed large bat. What to do this month Create a moth trap: Try painting a mixture of treacle, sugar and beer onto tree trunks as moths will be attracted to feed on the mixture. Putting a bright torch behind a white sheet at night is another simple way to attract moths. Have a good identification book to hand and see what species you can

The Warmth of a Real Coal Fire

A Brave Blind Cowboy An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake . . . He finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, 'Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?' The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, 'Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things: 1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl with a 'BillyClub'. 3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate. 4. With thanks to Susan and Francis at Studio Craft, we will be meeting there on Wednesday 18th July at 10.30am (their Studio is in the Homend next to the Royal Oak.) From a knitting/crochet point of view, we need to get an idea of how many poppies we now have. If you’ve made some but can’t join us, it would be helpful if you could drop us a line saying how many. We will start planning to stitch them on to tapes so we can attach them to the railings. There’s an exciting project starting to develop for a calligraphy exhibition based on the Dymock Poets. We’ll have an update on this. We have heard that there may be other poetry available too. Word is that our local artists have been wielding their brushes and paints. We’re looking forward to hearing about their work.

Vet Talk

with Martin Leith BVetMed MRCVS

O

ne of the biggest dangers for rabbits in the summer is Flystrike. Generally, we think of flystrike only happening to rabbits that have dirty bottoms; sadly this is not always the case. Blowflies (greenbottles and bluebottles) can lay their eggs anywhere on a rabbit’s body. These eggs are laid deep within the coat and they are tiny which makes them incredibly hard to spot. The flies are attracted to anywhere that they can smell blood or faeces, so wounds are a target but dirty or wet bottoms are usually the place to find them. Rabbits that are fed a poor quality diet, overweight or have poor mobility are at an increased risk, but also rabbits that spend all of their time in the hutch are susceptible. Ways to avoid Flystrike: • Check your rabbit’s bottom daily throughout the year and twice daily in the warmer weather.

When did you last check your bunny's bottom? • Feed a good quality diet; this should consist of grass, hay, leafy greens and a small portion of pellets.

maggots from fly eggs. You cannot rely on this product alone, you still need to check your rabbit’s bottom daily.

• If you feel your rabbit has mobility issues, please consult one of our vets for advice.

• Please be aware, indoor rabbits are also at risk.

• Keep your rabbit's house clean and tidy by removing wet or dirty bedding every day and replacing with fresh. • Once a week, give your rabbits home a thorough clean out and disinfect it; ensure it is completely dry before replacing with fresh bedding. • It is advisable to treat them with a product called Rearguard. This is applied to your rabbit’s body every couple of months and it inhibits the development of

What to look out for when checking your rabbit’s bottom: • Your rabbit’s demeanour may have changed and they may be off their food. • The fur in the affected area will be wet and dirty. • There may be visible sores around the bottom. • If caught early enough you will see fly eggs. • In the more advanced stage (24hrs after eggs being laid), maggots will be seen.

Flystrike is a very serious condition and sadly it is often fatal, however rabbits can make a full recovery if the condition is found and treated quickly. This is an emergency situation and they need to see the vet immediately. If you are concerned about your rabbits health and wellbeing, please speak to a member of our team for advice on 01531 632276.

Going that extra length to support Hospice!

A

Ledbury man approaching a milestone birthday is going to great lengths in support of his local Hospice. Gerald Brooke turns 80 this July and to mark the celebration he will be swimming one length of Ledbury Swimming Pool for every year of his life. His personal challenge will raise funds for St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford, which has held a special place in his heart ever since his beloved wife, Barbara, died aged 72.

'Watching a loved one die is a distressing experience, but St Michael’s staff made it as painfree as possible. It’s a sign of humanity, being alive and well. And this is why I feel so passionate about doing the swim.' Gerald’s 80-length challenge will take place at Ledbury’s Halo Swimming Pool on Lawnside Road, where he regularly swims 40 lengths, on Friday, 13th July – an auspicious date! He is hopeful that two staff members of staff from Santander bank in

Malvern will join him for the swim. Gerald revealed that he is also planning a celebration to mark his 80th birthday when he will ask guests to donate funds for the Hospice appeal. To sponsor him, email geraldbrooke@btinternet.com who will provide you with the bank details. Thank you for donating to this wonderful cause! photographs & article by Jan Long

‘The staff made her feel very comfortable,’ said Gerald. ‘They eased and cured her pains and allowed her to be as active as possible. It was all about dignity really.’ Gerald described his wife as a very reserved person but says the Hospice ‘allowed her to be herself’. He commented,

For many years Parkway provided teas and lunches on a regular basis for residents and visitors to the town and has raised its voice, along with other WIs in the area, to highlight both national and international issues affecting our quality of life. Parkway holds a monthly afternoon meeting and a Specialist Speaker is invited to give a talk. The meeting also offers opportunities of friendship and amusement to those who prefer to spend their evenings relaxing at home. Parkway WI is presently looking to reinvigorate its membership and a warm welcome is always extended to visitors. Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Fencing U

s Brits are very keen on fencing off our land. In some parts of America, they have gardens which run into one another without fences, but here in the UK we fence off our areas. Most back gardens use fence panels; the most common panels are called “waney lap fencing panels” or “close board fencing”, which is a fence constructed to fit the size. The advantage of this is that it is much stronger and can be shaped accordingly, whereas

52

fence panels are very rigid and fine in a straight line or on a flat surface. There are now many choices of fencing on the market these days from horizontal oak beading. Being horizontal can make your garden a lot larger as your eye follows the line of the wood. Glass is now becoming very fashionable if backing on to open land. Nowadays houses are closely built together and screening is a big thing, so one

option you could look at is adding trellising on top of your existing fencing. The best way is to bolt on an extra post to your uprights to give you the height. Another option to think about is pleached trees. The easiest way to explain what they look like is a hedge on stilts. Each tree has a 2m stem with a 1.5m hedge head on top. A lot of people ask about the treatment of fences and how to look after them. Realistically they need treating every two years. Anything more, and in this very wet climate we have, they start to rot. Fencing can last up to 20 years; close board fencing can last longer. You can get concrete posts and slide the fence panels in, but I would always recommend a concrete gravel board at the bottom - this will keep your fence panel off the soil and make it last that much longer. There is usually a lot of dispute between neighbours about who owns a fence. The best thing to do is to check the deeds because usually they will tell you whether

it is a shared fence or if you own it. There is a very old rule which says that if the fence posts are on your land then it is your fence, so the idea is that you can then check and replace any rotting fence posts. You have to be very careful when putting any climbers or trellising onto a fence, especially if it isn’t yours. Make sure you get permission before you do this. Generally, if you are putting climbers up a fence, you are better off putting vine eyes and wire between posts so that it takes the strain off the fence. If you keep them well clipped and managed, then they should not cause a problem. Ivy can be tricky and needs a close eye to be kept on it because

it will go through a fence panel and as the ivy gets thicker it will start to pull the panels apart. Doing your two-year maintenance check on the fence and treating it, is your golden opportunity to make sure everything is cut back off the fence and nothing is getting out of control. That will help to keep your fence stronger and healthier for many years to come.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Lamb & Parmesan Stuffed Courgettes Courgettes are plentiful at this time of year, so why not try something different? Hollowed out and stuffed with rice and rosemary-flavoured minced lamb, this hearty meal is healthy and cheap, too. METHOD yy Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas Mark 5 yy Cut the courgettes in half lengthways and remove the insides with a spoon, leaving a 1cm thick shell. yy Set the pulp aside and chop lightly, then place the scooped-out courgettes in a foil-covered baking dish and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. yy While the courgettes bake, boil the rice for 12-15 minutes until just done. Drain and allow to stand for 5 minutes. INGREDIENTS

4 large courgettes 150g long grain 2 tomatoes, chopped 1 egg 375g lean minced lamb 1 onion 2 garlic cloves 250g passata (tomato puree) 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary 4 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese salt and pepper to taste Serves 4

58 58

yy Add the chopped tomatoes and beaten egg to the rice, mix together and add salt and pepper to taste. yy Over a medium heat, fry the minced lamb for 5 minutes until browned. yy Add the onion and garlic and fry for another 5 minutes. yy Add the passata, the courgette pulp, and the rosemary. Stir well to combine, bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes. yy Finally, stir in the rice mixture. yy Divide the mixture equally and spoon into the baked courgette shells, sprinkling the top with the Parmesan to finish. yy Return to the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until the tops are crispy. Serve immediately.

n this article I share with you some information on kidney health and how it influences our general physical vitality. I also share some self-help tips for stimulating and balancing your kidney energy. Location of the Kidneys The kidneys are located on the back of the body, on each side in the region bounded superiorly by the twelfth rib, medially by the vertebral column and inferiorly by the superior lilac crest. Often one side can be more tender, sore or warm than the other side and gently palpating (touching) the kidney area will determine which side might be out of balance. Physical function of the Kidneys The primary physical function of the kidneys is to remove waste products of metabolism from our bodies. Our kidneys perform essential activities to the urinary system and also serve homeostatic functions such as the regulation of electrolytes, maintenance of acid base balance and regulation of blood pressure.

The kidneys work to filter the blood and remove water soluble wastes which are diverted to the bladder. Kidney health and Traditional Chinese Medicine In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) our kidneys are where we store our vital energy and general vitality. The balance of kidney energy is crucial and essential to good overall health and balance. When the kidneys are well the qi or energy in a person is balanced and well and this qi / energy can be distributed as it is needed. When the kidneys are damaged this ability to distribute qi / energy becomes impaired. A TCM practitioner, Acupuncturist or Kinesiologist would generally work to stimulate the kidney meridian by gently massaging or needling points on the kidney meridian and on the bladder meridian. This stimulation would help balance the kidney energy, and kidney health would become balanced as a result. In practice I would use a combination of the Bowen

kidney procedure along with some kinesiology based self-help tips for balancing the meridian and some very specific nutritional guidance. Situations that can effect Kidney balance may include: • Over excursion of any sort • Stress • Fear • Dehydration / over hydration • Infections • Excessive alcohol consumption • Consumption of stimulants • Excessive exercise • Some pharmaceutical drugs Problems that could arise as a result of Kidney imbalance could include: • Urinary infections • Dizziness • Tiredness and exhaustion • Headaches / Migraine • Abdominal pain • Pain in back, thighs and knees • Arthritic conditions • High blood pressure • Hair loss • Hormonal related problems in both sexes • Oedema / water retention How you can help your Kidneys • Tap your K1 point – The K1 point is the start point of the kidney meridian and is situated just below the ball of the foot on both sides. If you bunch your fingers together and tap or gently massage this area you will hit the point. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this point is called the “wellspring of life” point because it is considered so potent at balancing not only kidney energy but enhancing general vitality and well-being.

Ledbury Focus

• Tap your K27 point – The K27 point is the end point of the kidney meridian. The K27s are located on each side of the body, just below your clavicle you will feel a slight dip/indent. If you bunch all of your fingers together and tap this area it will help to energise the Kidney meridian. This is a great technique to use if you feel an energy slump in the afternoon it really will help to wake you up! • Eat beetroot – or drink some beetroot juice, which is a wonderful kidney tonic. The late Tom Bowen would recommend clients to have this for four consecutive days after a Bowen treatment to “tonify” the kidneys. Buckwheat, beans and sea vegetables are also excellent kidney foods. • Keep hydrated – when we are dehydrated the kidneys don’t function as well as they should but do not over hydrate the body otherwise the kidneys will have to work much harder. There is a balance that we need to find as individuals concerning our on personal hydration. • Have a treatment – The Bowen Technique has a specific procedure that can address the Kidneys directly. This procedure works at a physical level to address problems with the Kidneys but also at a subtle level addressing the kidney meridian. • In practice I will use this procedure for a multitude of symptoms including: ❒❒ b ack problems ❒❒ adrenal exhaustion ❒❒ ME ❒❒ specific kidney related problems i.e. infections ❒❒ bladder problems ❒❒ incontinence ❒❒ oedema ❒❒ dizziness ❒❒ lymphatic blockage ❒❒ fear/fright ❒❒ arthritic conditions.

Water Safety Advice During The Hot Weather

West Mercia Police is offering advice and reminding people of the dangers of swimming in open water.

As summer temperatures soar, taking a cooling dip in the water is an obvious temptation, but one that often hides much less obvious dangers to your safety. According to the Royal Life Saving Society, 85% of accidental drowning occurs at open water sites such as lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs and quarries. Bodies of water may look safe, but can hide dangers such as hidden currents, hazardous objects, pollution and the ever present risk of cold water shock. Be aware of the risks Being a strong swimmer does not mean you will be safe in open water. The dangers include: • Cold water temperatures • Hidden currents • Unseen objects such as rubbish, broken glass or hazardous materials • Unknown water quality health risks from pollution • Difficult to gauge water depth - you could find yourself in

unexpectedly deep water or injure yourself jumping into shallow water Tips for staying safe The best way to stay safe is to ensure you only enter water where there is adequate supervision and rescue cover. Other tips include: • If walking or running near open water, keep away from the water's edge and supervise youngsters at all times • Don't swim near weirs, locks, pipes and sluices • Alcohol and swimming should never be mixed • Get out of the water as soon as you start to feel cold • Wear recommended safety equipment - for example life jackets and helmets if canoeing • Don't jump or dive into open water when you are unsure of the depth and any submerged hazards If you see someone in difficulty tell a Lifeguard if there is one nearby, or dial 999 and ask for the police at inland water sites and the coastguard at the beach. ***** Goodbye to PCSO 40266 Joe Barson: Joe left Ledbury SNT on 25th May to begin a new career in the Highways department at Worcestershire Council. He was a valued member of the team and will be missed. Thanks Joe and good luck in your new job! We all get old in the end! • I changed my car horn to make gunshot sounds. People get out of the way much faster now. • Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. • You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's common sense leaving your body. • I didn't make it to the gym again today. That makes five years in a row.

• Old age is coming at a really bad time. • When I was a child I thought “Nap Time” was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a small vacation. • The biggest lie I tell myself is: I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it . . . • I don't have grey hair; I have "wisdom highlights"! I'm just very wise. • I decided to stop calling the bathroom the “John” and renamed it the “Jim”. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. • If God wanted me to touch my toes, He would've put them on my knees. • Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice. • At my age "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for. • Actually I'm not complaining because I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don’t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don’t have a curfew. I have a driver’s licence and my own car. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant. And I don’t have acne. Life is great! Ledbury Focus

We are delighted to have found the new premises and look forward to offering our life changing sessions in Ledbury.

M

egan Baker House (MBH) has just opened an outreach centre on the site of Shaw Healthcare in Orchard Lane. MBH has been in existence since 2002 and our main centre is currently located in a converted barn between Leominster and Ludlow. This additional venue will allow us to help those who cannot travel to Leominster and help additional beneficiaries living in the south of the county.

Ledbury Focus

As a self-funding charity, we rely on the support of the community as well as grants from major trusts to enable us to continue our work and already the support we have received from the Ledbury community has been tremendous. If you or your company are looking for a charity to support or raise funds for, please come and see us to find out more about our work. Children with a variety of motor disabilities will attend the centre for sessions on a weekly basis, as

well as adults with early onset Parkinson’s disease. These sessions will be delivered in a limited way from now until the end of the academic year. In September, sessions will commence in a full-time format. To find out more about us and the sessions please do come along to our information day on 11th July between 10.30am and 1.30pm when Chloe and Zoe will be delighted to meet you and explain more about our work. For more information, please contact zoe@meganbakerhouse. org.uk or telephone 01568 616179. Please also look at our website www.meganbakerhouse.org.uk
