T

o imagine a world where our opinion is no longer sought, and decisions can be made without our input, is difficult to visualise; it is also very difficult to talk about our eventual demise. There are also many people therefore who don’t care, or don’t care enough, what happens to them or what they have, once they have died. Its probably of little surprise to know 60% of the population do not have a Will and many of those who do have a Will, have not reviewed them in years. These reviews don’t take place because once someone has constructed their Will, they no longer want to think about it, for all the reasons I have just outlined. Yet it is a very important step to take. In the first instance if you don’t decide who has what, then the government will decide for you, so your assets could finish up in the wrong hands. Secondly, on death, the surviving children often fall out over their parents’ Will, and

8

sometimes they never speak again. There are eventualities people forget about: when one partner dies the remaining partner often remarries, then the new wife or husband and their children get the benefit of the estate, and the children of the original marriage are left out. This happened in my own family when I was a child; the two families have not spoken since. With a little thought and careful guidance, these unfortunate issues can be avoided, and assets can be directed at the people you want to benefit. Just as important as a Will are Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). If for any reason you lose mental or physical capacity, the local authority or social services can and will take over your power of attorney. Most people would prefer to know if they can no longer make their own decisions and take control of their lives, then the ones they love and trust can make decisions for them. It also ensures things stay in place, like joint bank accounts and investments. The alternative is to be at the mercy of the Court of Protection and may

cost many thousands of pounds to make relatively simple decisions, which could easily have been made by your family, provided they hold lasting Powers of Attorney.

In many cases asset are best held in trust. Your assets are then in control of, and often owned by the trust, and controlled by the Trustees. On death these assets can pass immediately to those you wish to benefit, without passing through probate, which can take a long time. The assets do not normally attract a probate fee which can,

especially if handled by a bank, be very expensive. Perhaps more importantly, we will come and visit you in the security of your own home, where all the relevant documentation is readily available, along with Wills you may already have and wish to review. The cost of the first visit is borne by Bees & Co, and our very competitive pricing structure includes VAT. Just telephone or email for an appointment.

and what can you actually end up with?

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Grafting P

eople often ask me if a plant is damaged, or diseased, or what is this lump, etc., on a plant . . . and that is where it has been grafted on.

together with the chosen host plant and carries on growing. In human terms we have skin grafts, where we take a section of skin from one area of the body and transfer it onto another section of the body to encourage it to grow over a damaged area. This is basically the same scenario but with plants.

From the commercial side of things, a specimen that is very slow growing can have a big mother plant, which is an advantage because there is a lot of it and you can prune it hard, for example a Contorted Hazel. You can take a wild Hazel plant root and stock, and graft a large section of very slow growing Contorted Hazel onto it, creating a lot of plants reasonably quickly for re-sale. The most common plants that are grafted nowadays are roses. You hear people saying “it has reverted back, it has sent up suckers”, and this is because they have used a wild root stock or a rose that has a very good root system (which is preferable when it comes to roses) and the variety required is grafted onto that strong stem. So, the disadvantage is that it can send up suckers and revert back because the wild root stock is stronger than the main plant.

So what is Grafting? Grafting is used to improve a plant that is very slow growing, or doesn’t produce very good seed, or very good cuttings. You take the mother plant that has Various ways of doing this grown - this is a ‘true’ plant of its However the advantages are, that variety - and take a section of that This can be achieved from a bud cutting to a root. It is complex because these plants are slow plant and glue it, through cuts growing and it is hard to produce and very hard to explain all the and by taping it, onto a different new plants from seeds, etc. different methods, but what are plant of the same family, or host (because of the time it takes), plant. thecall advantages disadvantages To advertise 01684 and 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 10 The ‘graft’ fuses itself

this option brings the price down because the plants can be mass produced. Another variety of plant for grafting is an acer. If you get a wild green acer that grows very quickly you can graft onto it. The most common form of grafting is to cut out an inverted ‘V’ from your chosen plant, and on the root stock cut out another ‘V’, that slots together with the ‘V’ of your chosen plant, and then bind them together. This is why sometimes - certainly on roses - little bits of wax can be found, because wax is used to seal the joint and stop disease getting in. Nowadays it is more common to buy grafting secateurs which will precisely cut all the sections, fix them into place and automatically wrap them for you.

What are the other advantages? You could have a fruit tree, for example a pear, and graft a different variety of pear onto each branch of the host plant. This was very common with Victorian gardeners when they were starting to experiment with these processes. You could have a rose with blooms of a different colour on each branch. Grafting really took off from this era onwards. When you are looking for a plant at a Garden Centre Don’t be put off if there is a lump on the stem, or because you can see a ‘V’ section on the plant. This only means that it has been grafted onto a hardier host plant. It will be perfectly strong, and there is no disease just because it might be a slightly different colour. What you must avoid doing is putting the graft under the ground when planting, if it is a tree etc. as that is obviously a point where disease could get in or even rot out the graft. If your rose is producing suckers from the root stock your best bet is to dig down to the root and try to tear this off the root stock, otherwise there is a chance it will grow much quicker and take over the plant.

Art Lovers invited to New Local Art Group

A

rt lovers are being invited to join a new workshop group led by local artist Becca Harris, held in locations throughout Worcestershire and Warwickshire, including Pershore, Inkberrow, Cheswick Green, Wellesbourne and Bidford on Avon. Becca made the move to Worcestershire less than 12 months ago, after first falling in love with the area whilst studying Fine Art at the University of Worcester almost seven years ago. Since graduating with a first class degree in the subject, she has made it her mission to get people across the two counties engaged in creativity and art. The workshops give artists the chance to work with a wide variety of materials whilst learning new skills, in a relaxed and friendly environment. Every week students look at a different style, technique, movement or material and create a piece of work to take home. Whether it’s taking inspiration from the Impressionists or practicing using watercolours, there is plenty to explore and have fun with! Becca said: “I have run art groups in both Solihull and Inkberrow for

some time now, and they are great fun! I’ve met some lovely people, all very capable, even though they tell me they are ‘just beginners’. Inkberrow and the surrounding areas are lovely and I feel very fortunate to live here. The village is busy with lots of activities taking place regularly and I really wanted to be able to bring something to the table that people can enjoy. I’m so pleased to be able to expand the art groups to new locations, offering regular workshops on different days and times throughout the week, as it means more people will have the opportunity to take part. Creating art has to be one of the most relaxing and therapeutic

activities out there, so I'd encourage everyone to take some time out and give it a try! The workshops are really flexible, informal and fun, and everyone has a really positive attitude which is great! I hope that lots of people, whether they have never picked up a brush before or they are a serious art-enthusiast, are able to come along and see what they can create." The groups run throughout the week at different locations across Worcestershire and Warwickshire. For a full timetable please contact Becca by using the details below. The workshops are pay as you go and cost £12 which includes all materials as well as refreshments.

For more information or to book email artwbecca@gmail.com, or call 07527 113 926.

Wine:

Choice Desserts

D

essert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are 'late harvested', incorporate 'noble rot' (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can also be sparkling and fortified. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular for many dining occasions.

Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the LimarĂ Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine.

Torres Floralis (Spain) is another popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making Floralis-Moscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations.

Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is also extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite since the 17th century; the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.

I located these productions and many more, at the award-winning Majestic Wine Company, which is dedicated and committed to customer satisfaction. Great advice, if required, from the very knowledgeable staff, about their wines, spirits, beers, ciders and non-alcoholic beverages, etc., is always available, plus free glass hire and delivery, with free tastings and discounts. There are opportunities to meet wine producers at the free tasting events. Online ordering is available, too. www.majestic.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Lammas Gold L

ammas, celebrated on 1st August, used to be when Harvest Festival was observed. It was one of the quarter days when payments to the Church were due. (It is also known as Lughnasadh, Lugnasa and Lughnasa.) The Church also celebrated St Peter’s miraculous deliverance from prison on this day. There are many Roman Catholic churches called ‘St Peter in Chains.’ The word ‘Lammas’ comes from the Old English phrase ‘hlaf-maesse’ which means ‘loaf mass.’ A successful harvest was important – it meant that families would be able to bake and store bread through the winter, making a difference of life and death to many. The Celts celebrated it as the festival of the sun god Lugh. The name means ‘shining one.’ The god is symbolically cut down by gathering the crops at harvest, and he is then reborn in the bread made from the harvest grains. The festival is also linked to Demeter, Greek goddess of the harvest and her daughter Persephone who represents the grain that drops back into the earth. The grain is hidden through the dark days of winter and reappears in spring as new growth. There are many customs across Europe relating to the harvesting of grain, covering all cereal crops including corn, wheat, barley, rye

and oats. Traditionally, the first sheaf was ceremoniously cut at dawn, winnowed, ground and baked into Harvest Bread that was blessed and shared by the whole community in thanksgiving. The first sheaf guaranteed the seed and continuity for the following year. The last sheaf was made into a corn dolly. This was central to the Harvest Supper. It was made into a Corn Maiden after a good harvest, often decorated with ribbons, or a cailleach, hag or crone after a bad one. This was usually kept hanging over the hearth to bring good luck, and the seeds were added to the new seeds in the spring. Many people will know the traditional song ‘John Barleycorn.’ Written versions of this date back to the time of Elizabeth I, but the song is thought to be much older. It is a metaphor for the cycle of growth from planting to harvest and includes birth, suffering, death and rebirth. Robert Burns published his own version in 1782 in which John Barleycorn is portrayed as a Christ-like figure

who died so that others could live. In ‘The Golden Bough’ Sir James Frazer cites John Barleycorn as proof that there was once a pagan cult in England that worshipped a god of vegetation who was sacrificed in order to bring fertility to the fields. In Anglo Saxon paganism there was a similar figure called Beowa associated with threshing the grain and agriculture. Beowa is the Old English word for barley. Lammas or Lughnasa was a time of feasting, market fairs and games. It was also considered to be an auspicious time for handfastings and weddings. A plant considered important at this time of year was Meadowsweet – also known as Queen of the Meadow, Bridewort and Bride of the Meadow. This plant was once sacred to the Druids. It was worn as a garland at harvest time and was also used for wedding circlets and bouquets. It was a popular ingredient for love spells.

Give me strength .... !! One day, three men were hiking and unexpectedly came upon a large, raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side but had no idea how to do so. The first man prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength to cross this river." Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours, after almost drowning. a couple of times. Seeing this, the second man prayed to God, saying, "Please God, give me the strength and the tools to cross this river." Poof! God gave him a rowboat and he was able to row across the river in about an hour after almost capsizing the boat several times. The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two so he also prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength and the tools and the intelligence to cross this river." Poof! God turned him into a woman.

eepers at West Midland Safari Park have provided some World Cupthemed enrichment for the youngest elephant in their care. Sutton, who recently celebrated his fourth birthday, seemed to relish the opportunity at playing with a giant football ahead of England’s first game in the fourweek-long tournament. The youngster was a natural when it came to kicking the ball, using his trunk and front feet to dribble it around his enclosure, much to the amusement of mum Five, aunt Latabe and his

Head Elephant Keeper, Andy Plumb, said: “We love giving Sutton new things to play with and he seemed like a natural with his new football. Anything colourful and easy to pick up really fascinates young elephants and it was great to see him sweeping the ball around with his trunk!” He continued: “I’ve been working with elephants for many years now and have built up a really strong bond with Latabe, Five and young Sutton. It’s lovely to see how close they’ve become as a family and how his mum and aunt keep an eye on his playful antics. He definitely has some ball skills to rival the England squad!” Sutton was the first elephant to be born at the Park and was the

first elephant born in the UK using frozen semen from a wild bull. His mum Five and aunt Latabe arrived at the Park 20 years ago and have carefully watched over the cheeky youngster since his birth on 5 May 2014. During the summer, West Midland Safari Park will be hosting a fundraising week dedicated to elephant conservation. Funds raised during the week will be donated to the Mali Elephant Project, who work to protect a unique population of African elephants from poaching and habitat damage. For further information, visit: www.tusk. org/projects/mali-elephantproject/. The elephants can be seen in the four-mile Safari Drive-through, which is included in the standard admission charge of

Please ensure all pets (especially those in hutches) have access to shaded areas and clean fresh water at all times. Avoid walking your dogs in the middle of the day when the weather is at its hottest – the best time to walk is early morning or later in the evening.

What Turns Aroma Into Therapy?

W

e all know that massage can help with aches and pains, but did you know that it can be twice as good when aromatic oils are used? This - as I'm sure you all know - is aromatherapy, and it has been around for many years. It is one of the fastest-growing areas of alternative medicine, particularly with the nursing community. Each oil contains its own distinct qualities, aromas and fragrances, and most are used in conjunction with others to create a specific result, such as soothing anxiety and stress, easing nausea, or relieving headaches. Essential oils are also used for beauty, healing and pleasure, and are extracted from the oil glands in plants, trees, and flowers. These oils can offer a wealth of benefits when massaged into the skin. The oil molecules are absorbed through the pores, affecting the skin, the bloodstream, and the whole body, including the brain. The Worcestershire Grapevine

I had my first experience of aromatherapy five years ago when my arthritis was particularly bad. The oils the masseur used were a mixture of coriander, cypress and lemongrass, and I was quite surprised just how relaxing it was. As the massage progressed a strange thing happened: quite unexpectedly tears started to pour from my eyes. The masseur explained that it was a release of tension I had been told that the aroma from the oils relaxes you, but I hadn't expected tears. There are so many different oils used in many natural ways. Why not try an aromatic bath to release stress? First run your bath, then add 15 drops of a blend of lavender, rose and wild orange oils; stir around to mix the oils evenly, but do not use soap. Just relax, inhale and enjoy the aroma while your body absorbs the oils. After your bath you will feel relaxed and in a lovely mood. Tea tree

oil is one of my favourites - it’s a natural antiseptic and I can highly recommend it for all kinds of bites, including the dreaded mosquito. Essential oils can play a part in enhancing your emotional outlook on life. Citrus essential oils are often thought of for their light, summery aromas, but I use them all year round. The aroma of the citrus increases during the colder months and I find them energizing and help to uplift the spirits. They are the perfect complement of blends that fight off the winter blues, and depression. The oil I use most of all is lavender - I sprinkle it on my pillow at night and it relaxes me as I drift off to sleep. In today's stressful times, and hectic lifestyles, we all need ways to relax and gain a sense of inner peace and well-being, so why not give aromatic oils a try. article by Pamela Green

Ria Simons, Fundraiser at St Richard’s, said: “Writing a Will should not be a daunting experience, but we understand it is often a process many people don’t like to think about. “During our Write a Will Month campaign we hope to encourage people to take the first step and make an appointment with one of our participating solicitors. Once you have a Will in place, you also have peace of mind to know if you died, everything would be organised for your loved ones.

A

month-long Will writing campaign led by St Richard’s Hospice is set to return this September.

During the hospice’s Write a Will Month campaign, a number of Worcestershire solicitors’ firms will offer people the opportunity to write a simple Will for £95, or a double Will for £150 – with 100 per cent of the money donated to St Richard’s. The firms taking part are Kitcat & Co Solicitors, based in Malvern, and Harrison Clark Rickerbys, based in Worcester – with more to be confirmed. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will – which is a document setting out how people want their money, property and possessions to be distributed after their death. The Worcestershire Grapevine

All the participating solicitors are giving up their time free of charge to help the hospice – we are very grateful for their generous support. It is important to write a Will because in situations when a person dies without one, rules dictate how the individual’s estate is allocated which may not be as they would wish. It is also important to update a Will if personal circumstances change – for example if someone marries, divorces or adopts a child. St Richard’s Hospice is also encouraging people to consider leaving a gift in their Will, after they have provided for family and friends, although there is no obligation to do so. To take part, simply call your preferred solicitor and make an

appointment quoting the “St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Scheme”. To contact Harrison Clark Rickerbys, based in Deansway, Worcester, call Rachael Wheeler on 01905 678554 or email rwheeler@hcrlaw.com And to reach Kitcat and Co Solicitors, in Avenue Road, Malvern, call David Kitcat on 01684 342173 or email dk@ kitcat.legal For further details of participating solicitors call the Fundraising team on 01905 763963, or visit www.strichards. org.uk/event/writeawill/ St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses and supports their loved ones. Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,000 patients, family members and bereaved in Worcestershire. The hospice strives to provide the best medical, practical, emotional and social support they can to help people live life to the fullest, as independently as they can, for as long as they can. St Richard’s is an independent charity and is grateful for all donations to help it continue its work. Find out more at www.strichards. org.uk

Get Writing! I

f you’ve always wanted to try writing a poem or story but don’t know where to start – then this page is for you. If you were always told at school ‘you’ll be a writer one day’ and it hasn’t happened yet, then here’s a starting point for you. If you’re worried about something, writing about it in a creative way may set things in perspective for you.

• Your first day at school.

Find ten minutes whenever is convenient to you – or two lots of five minutes if your life is very hectic. Make yourself a mug of tea or coffee, find a piece of paper and a pen and start writing. Don’t worry about getting it right, you can tidy up later. Pick one of the prompts below and see how quickly you can fill your piece of paper. (This is called ‘free-writing.’)

When you’ve finished, reward yourself. You decide what your reward system is going to be – e.g. wine or chocolate or putting some money in a jar towards a bigger treat like

• A place (real or imaginary) where you played as a child. The Worcestershire Grapevine

• Your earliest memory. • A person you remember from childhood. • Something you found difficult – e.g. riding a bike or learning to swim. Use the senses as much as you can. Colours, sounds, smells and textures all help to bring a story to life for the reader.

perfume, shoes or going to a concert. During your next writing session, have a look at your story and tidy it up. The best way to do this is to read it aloud and cut anything that jars or holds up the action. If you feel pleased with what you’ve written (and I hope you will) why not send it to me – sue.r.johnson@outlook.com by Thursday 30th August. (Aim for a maximum of 250 words). I will award a small prize to the winning entry.

STOP Digging Yourself a Hole…

W

e often find ourselves in a bad position from time to time, stuck in a hole looking up at how to get up. It’s just life and is inevitable. The common sense side of us will say to look for options on how to climb out of the hole and carry on. However, the emotional side of us decides to pull out the shovel and continues to dig, making the hole deeper and therefore harder to climb out of.

Here are a few classic examples of how we dig ourselves bigger, steeper holes: I’ve eaten junk on Friday, so I’ll start the healthy eating again on Monday…

This classic is a true tried and tested method of how to dig yourself a deeper hole. You’ve done well all week. You’ve gone to so much effort to plan your meals during the

week, you’ve said no to the chocolates at work. Then you had a stressful Friday, you give in to the pizza takeaway and wine at home and you feel as though the world has ended! Your diet is ruined so you may as well give in, eat as much crap as you can because as of Monday you’re never touching any of this junk ever again… Until next weekend that is! And the cycle continues over and over again. Maybe not over a week. Maybe this digging is done over a month, or even over three months. But eventually, you end up digging yourself a deep hole each time. Sound familiar? Or maybe this story of hole digging is more you… I’ve not been to the gym this week. I feel so lethargic so I think I will go again next week…

40

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

You have been working hard on that work project all week. So much so that you’ve left the office knackered and all you want to do is to drive home to relax. So you do, even though the gym bag is in the car and you will likely drive past the gym to get home. This happens a few times in a row and you then feel like you have ‘lost your mojo’! You’ve missed one or two sessions and all of a sudden, you’ve lost your motivation and you feel like giving up. That one week turns into two, then a month, three months and before you know it you’ve not been to the gym in half a year… …sound like something you’ve done in the past? Classic hole digging! Or how about this one…

It’s Wednesday, you’re at work and someone has brought in a box of chocolates as a thank you or celebration…

You’ve said no all day but the pressure has been relentless. Almost everyone has been saying to you ’Oh, go on! Just have one…one won’t hurt you.’ Under such pressure, you have JUST THE ONE! But then this ONE leads you to think that you’ve ruined it all so you may as well have another. Two leads to three,

three to four and four to fourteen!! The damage would have been minimal with one, or even two chocolates. But the next ten to twelve is classic hole digging and does serious damage both to your result and also to your emotional state. Maybe you are guilty of one, two or maybe even all three of these self-hole digging scenarios? So what can you do? If I told you to dig deep would that sound counterintuitive?

I’m talking here about digging deep within yourself. Going into those pools of reserves in order to be strong and climb back out of that hole and carry on. This is the hard thing to do at the time, but if you can get right into it, you will find it much better and easier in the long run. And the more you do this, the easier it becomes… . . . /continued on page 42 The Worcestershire Grapevine

41

We find that answering to someone is a great way to keep you in check. Whether this is daily meet-ups at the gym, pictures of meals within a WhatsApp group or a larger community Facebook group. Simply telling people the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth will go a long way to helping you succeed. 3. Accept Failure and Move On

. . . /continued from page 41 Until the time that you feel like you have a ladder in your backpack that you can pull out and use to climb out of the hole you’re in and continue with your journey And here’s a few things you can use to help build your ladder 1. Make your Next Meal a Healthy One

This is a big thing that we promote to our members at ALM Fitness. Instead of putting off your healthy eating following a binge or lapse. Simply get back on track at your very next meal. Don’t wait until Monday. Stop the guilt eating for the rest of the day and no need to allow four chocolates to spiral into fourteen! Just get right back on it at the next opportunity. 2. Get an Accountability Buddy

Getting going again with an accountability buddy to keep you in check and to call you out on your lame excuses!

Step Back Start Again Concept A very difficult thing to master, but once you do you will find it liberating, and extremely helpful. You will learn so much more by allowing yourself to fail, accepting the fact you’re human and learning from what you did wrong and what led to it…. Don’t labour on it, don’t berate yourself for being weak etc. You would likely let others off with failure and look to support them and offer advice. Simply switch that from external to internal behaviour. . . . . . . . . . . .. . . So that’s three simple but very effective methods to stop you digging big holes for yourself as you journey to where you want to be with your health and fitness. The road is hard enough! Why make it even tougher for yourself by self-sabotaging and digging yourself that big hole that just seems to get deeper and deeper. Instead, use our tips to build yourself a ladder to quickly get out of your hole and move on… For more information on the services we provide, or if you’d like to take part in our next sixweek transformation, then please take a look at our website www.almfitness.co.uk or email amy@almfitness.co.uk and I’ll be more than happy to help.

Reasons why you Shouldn’t have a Will one

You know when you’re going to die, you’ve got loads of time!

two

You rather like the idea of your children battling over your estate, falling out and never speaking to each other again!

three

You dislike your spouse and would prefer them to struggle with strenuous legal issues and be tied up in expensive litigation with your children for many years.

four

Your family doesn’t need the money. You actually much prefer the idea of the Government taking as much of your estate for taxes as they wish.

five

You think foster care would be the best place for your children, whilst Social Services and your family fight in court over which relative gets custody. Of course, we are being overly flippant! Like us, you will not agree with any of these reasons.

Get in touch with our legal experts to discuss your Wills and Inheritance Tax Planning: Pershore

01386 562000

So, you should be asking yourself one very important question?

What logical reason is there for you NOT to have a Will?

Tewkesbury

01684 299633

You may assume that everything you own at your death will go to your husband, wife or partner, or perhaps you believe you have nothing to leave anyway.

Cheltenham

01242 235250 Stratford-upon-Avon

The fact is, without a Will, the Intestacy Rules say who gets what and put simply your property may not go to those who you wish to receive it. If you care about who benefits from your property after your death you MUST MAKE A WILL.

Paws for Thought

A

s the with ever thing in life there are always changes; however for the past forty years Angela has been caring for animals, for the majority of that time with Evesham Cats Protection, and this care and dedication has never changed. Angela had a natural affinity with animals from a small child and this lead her to train as a veterinary nurse for her career. Sadly, during this time many animals did not have a second chance and were being euthanized as there were not enough resources for them. This was not what Angela had expected and so this influenced her to start rescuing these animals, feeling she could do something different to help

animals that had nowhere else to go. Angela was fortunate to be able continue working at the vets and to rent a room there, which was shared with a dog groomer. This was where 'Pet Rescue' began, with many animals having a opportunity of a new home. One in particular was a special ginger kitten called Harry who lived with Angela, much to her father's despair, as yet another pet in the house. In time the Pet Rescue grew, with outdoor pens being a highlight. However the vet practice was to be sold and Angela had little time to find new premises but was fortunate to be offered a caravan and space for pens on NCDL (now Dogs Trust) land in

Wickhamford. This was the beginning of Evesham Cats Protection, with the help and support from the Worcester CP co-ordinator at the time. As awareness grew so did Evesham Cats Protection, with Angela becoming the voluntary co-ordinator and also raising a family. She continued to develop the rescue with large group of dedicated volunteers, using what resources they had available. Then with a generous bequest and fundraising, enough money was raised to buy build a cabin, with kitchen, office and medical room. The success continued with Evesham CP being called a flagship branch for the charity. With many highs and a few lows, after thirty years at this site

another big change came with the Dogs Trust redevelopment. Evesham Cats Protection was on the move to where it is now situated, and from where many cats and kittens continue to find new homes. All of these cats have been given individual care, 365 days a year, by the volunteers who want them to find them a new permanent home. So with the unconditional love and devotion given over all these years, a huge thank you to Angela and to all those who have helped by volunteering and supporting Evesham Cats Protection and the many thousands of cats and kittens of all shapes, sizes, colours and characters that have been given a chance of a new home with their help. THANK YOU! And so the story continues. Please contact Evesham Cats Protection on 01386 833343 if you can give a cat or kitten another chance.

Pershore & District Round Table Donation Eric Wiles, Chairman of the Volunteer Centre said "the mini-buses are expensive to buy and maintain and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Round Table for their help to support one of our mini-buses". In recognition of the Round Table's support the minibus will soon be carrying their logo, so look out for it around town.

P

ershore Volunteer Centre operates 2 minibuses, which are available for other charities and community groups to hire. When not on hire the Centre uses these mini-buses to run a number of services to transport people from Pershore and surrounding areas to a wide variety of venues, including the weekly shopping trip to the Co Op and fortnightly trips to the lunch club at St Andrews Centre. In the year to March 2018 the centre undertook 2,500 passenger journeys; all using volunteer drivers.

Photo shows Steve Boycott of Pershore & District Round Table with Kate Walton and Eric Wiles, of Pershore & District Volunteer Centre. Steve said “At Pershore & District Round Table we are committed to helping the local community. By making this donation to your fantastic organisation, it is a great way for us to reach out to the whole community, particularly vulnerable people who rely on your service so dearly. It is a pleasure for us to help in some way and hopefully we can continue to work together in the future.”

Abbey Rocks to keep the Air Ambulance flying

V

isitors to Pershore on Saturday, 28 April might have been a little surprised to hear our centuries old Abbey rocking to the music and the sounds of the 1980s. However, the concert, organised by Pershore Rotary, was arranged to support the lifesaving work of the Midlands Air Ambulance, Pershore Rotary’s principal charity of the year, and to help support and raise funds for Pershore High School’s 2018 Zambian student exchange programme. The first half of a very lively and unforgettable experience was given over to Pershore High School students, with a section of the cast reprising some of the songs from their highly successful Spring 2018 “Back to the 80s” musical, followed by 4 soloists performing a wide range of instrumental and vocal standards and classical pieces. The second half of the evening exploded into life with the sounds of Chris Harvey & The Stone Cutters, the local 80s styled rock group. Chris, a local drum tutor and talent spotter owns and runs Tower Studios in Pershore and plays with several other Worcestershire bands.

Overall, £900 was raised on the night by Pershore Rotarians from ticket sales and donations, with £400 to be donated to Pershore High School’s Zambian exchange project and £500 to the Midlands Air Ambulance. In addition, the Air Ambulance also received a donation of £1,000 from an anonymous concert goer. Rotary has been involved with youth exchanges for over 60 years, providing incredible opportunities for young people to see the world, experience a different way of life, maybe learn another language, make international friends and discover a lot about themselves whilst acting as an ambassador for their own country. Rotary is an organisation of men and women who volunteer their time and energy in support of their community. If you would like to know more about Rotary in this area please contact Bob Marchant at bobmarchant@uwclub.net or on 07850 996732.

The concert was well supported by staff and students of Pershore High School who raised funds for their Zambian exchange by selling a wide selection of delicious homemade cakes, tea and coffee in the interval.

After observing several applicants, he had decided to call it a day. Just then, an armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bell ringer's job. The bishop was incredulous. "But you have no arms!" he said. "No matter," said the man. "Observe!" And he began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment; convinced he had finally found a replacement for Quasimodo. But suddenly, the armless man tripped and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the street below. The stunned bishop rushed to his side. When he reached the street, a crowd had gathered around the fallen figure. As they silently parted to let the bishop through, one of them asked, "Bishop, who was this man?". "I don't know his name," the bishop sadly replied, "but his face rings a bell." WAIT! WAIT! There's more . . . . . . . . . . The following day, despite the sadness that weighed heavily on his heart due to the unfortunate death of the armless campanologist, the bishop continued his interviews for the bell ringer of Notre Dame. The first man to approach him said, "Your Excellency, I am the brother of the poor armless wretch who fell to his death from this very belfry yesterday. I pray that you honour his life by allowing me to replace him in this duty" The bishop agreed to give the man an audition, and, as the armless man's brother stooped to pick up a mallet to strike the first bell, he groaned, clutched at his chest, twirled around, and died on the spot. Two monks, hearing the bishop's cries of grief at this second tragedy, rushed up the stairs to his side. "What has happened? Who is this man?" the first monk asked breathlessly "I don't know his name," sighed the distraught bishop, "but . . . he's a dead ringer for his brother".
