Happy Easter and Happy April Fool’s Day! Not sure it’s quite correct to wish you, “Happy April Fool’s Day” but since it falls on the same day as Easter Sunday this year, I thought I’d do it anyway. I hope you all have a lovely weekend, enjoy your Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs – hopefully without too many unexpected surprises! This month we welcome several new advertisers, as well as articles from several local organisations, including Cats Protection who have their open day this month, and Pershore Volunteer Centre who are appealing for volunteers in various capacities. We also welcome back a number of seasonal advertisers, so keep an eye out for them as you browse through the magazine.

Living in the country, as we do, is wonderful most of the time, but can be challenging when the weather becomes temperamental and dumps several inches of snow on us, as happened a couple of weeks ago. However, madam weather is ever capricious and a week ago, when writing this piece for our Surreybased magazine, all traces of snow had disappeared and it was a beautiful sunny day – it was even warm! Then this morning, to my astonishment, I looked out of the window and saw . . . three inches of snow . . . again! So much for global warming!

And that’s all for this month. Until next time, keep happy and healthy.

As we leave the cold snowy weather behind us, we are truly overwhelmed at the gratitude from our customers to whom we made deliveries in the terrible snowy weather - you are all very kind and a huge thank you for the gifts (biscuits and cakes), they are greatly appreciated. After an early busy Easter we can now look forward to lighter nights, warmer weather and a much more settled April, we hope. Here at No. 10 we are all busy preparing for The Asparagus Festival which will be launched on St Georges Day, Monday 23rd April, and of course we will be once again supporting the Evesham Truck show on 21st and 22nd April. We will be there as usual offering our burgers, pork sausages and roast pork baps. Our two young butchers, Oliver and Billy, are busy preparing our homemade Vale Porkers Sausage. Sue - our cook - is busy making our own made scrummy Vale pork pies, ready for the launch of the Asparagus season, with our own unique recipe of freshly ground shoulder pork, a sprinkling of cracked black pepper, seasoning and infused with freshly cut Vale asparagus . . . the taste buds will burst with delight at this amazing combination. The Vale pork pies are a must for you pork pie experts. We also now have in stock freshly cut asparagus from our friends at Defford, as we continue to offer, support and promote local businesses and local produce. Oliver is ready with his new sausage recipe, The Fiery Dragon - pork infused with chillies and a hint of garlic! April is definitely going to be Pershore’s own sausage month!

Ferreting Around For Eggstra Special Treats

S

taff at West Midland Safari Park are gearing up for their annual Easter event and even the animals are getting involved with the celebrations. For this year’s Easter Eggstravaganza which starts on 24 March and ends on 15 April, keepers have been tasked with creating Easter-themed enrichment for the smaller animals in their care. An extremely excitable pair of ferrets thoroughly enjoyed their exploration through the Easter scene, ‘ferreting’ around for spots of cod liver oil that was drizzled over the eggs. The oil is a

14

favourite treat of theirs and ensures they have strong bones and glossy coats.

Each one is completely different which makes it so much fun to work with them.”

Easter bunny lookalike Julian, also took part in the celebrations and enjoyed hopping amongst the colourful eggs. The cute chinchilla even stopped to munch on the extra hay surrounding the eggs!

She continued, “Bob is the one that everyone seems to love - he’s so tiny and gentle. Julian is our only male chinchilla and loves a fuss and play time. Nala and Baloo, our pair of ferrets, are always together and like to be in amongst everything. Ferrets sleep for most of the day, so it’s fun to watch them eggsplore new things.”

Finally, tiny tenrec Bob had his Easter eggs filled with meal worms as an extra special treat. Small holes in the eggs allowed him to search for the tasty treats, encouraging natural foraging behaviours. Amy Sewell, Discovery Trail Head Keeper, said, “It’s really important that we give all our animals enrichment - it’s an eggcellent way to keep them mentally stimulated. We have a wide range of friendly animals that you can meet during our encounters throughout the Easter holidays.

Friendly Animal Encounters will take place throughout the Easter holidays and will feature tenrecs, ferrets and chinchillas, amongst other smaller, friendly creatures. The Encounters are fully interactive, with keepers providing information on the animals’ habitats and diet - there is even the opportunity to stroke them. The three-week-long Easter Eggstravaganza event will include

a whole host of exciting activities, such as an Eggsplorer’s Trail to find the giant missing eggs. There will also be an exclusive competition, where guests will need to find the Frozen Egg and upload a picture of themselves with the egg to Facebook. To celebrate the Commonwealth Games, the Park is hosting its very own Easter Commonwealth Games outside the Safari Academy. Guests can compete with the Easter Bunny in egg and spoon races and even attempt to beat him at his own hopping races. Those lucky enough will learn the special Easter Bunny Hop! The Safari Academy will also hold the daily Eggsplorers Craft Club, where guests can make their very own spring flowers, Easter carrot bunting, or a springy bunny rabbit. Easter Eggstravaganza activities are included in the standard admission charge of £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Children under the age of three years are admitted free of charge. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. ***** A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses from a heart attack! "Help me dear," she groans to her husband. The husband calls 999 on his mobile, talks for a few minutes, then picks up his putter and lines up his putt. His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. "I'm dying over here and you're putting?" "Don't worry dear," says the husband calmly, "they found a doctor on the second hole and he's coming to help you."

"Well, how long will it take for him to get here?" she asks feebly. "No time at all," says her husband. "Everybody's already agreed to let him play through."

***** At a wedding ceremony the pastor asked, ''If anyone has anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom, speak now, or forever hold your peace'' The moment of utter silence was broken by a young, beautiful woman carrying a child. She stood up and started walking slowly towards the pastor. Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride threw the bouquet at the groom, then burst out crying. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks, wondering how best to help save the situation. The pastor asked the woman, "Can you tell us, why you came forward? What do you have to say?" There was absolute silence in the church. Then the woman replied, "We can't hear you in the back row."

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Tying up Plants in Your Garden

N

ow is the time of year when things are growing well and before they flower, ideally they need to be staked. For example, plants such as peonies, which have a large flower head and are likely to flop over, either damaging the plant or dragging the blooms along the ground so they can’t be seen or allowing them to be eaten by slugs. There are various ways of tying up plants, depending on what type of

18

garden you have. Bamboo canes are the most obvious option, but if you have a large area of something like philadelphus, using bamboo canes for each stem can become a bit of an eyesore. What I recommend is, well before they are a foot high, put in a frame work which they can grow through. This allows the stems to be supported at a set height so they carry on growing past the support, allows the support to be out of view and the plants to shown off to their best advantage.

If it is a very traditional cottage garden and you have a supply of willow, you can weave yourself a miniature fence that helps to support your plants, and which would be more in keeping with the garden. The other advantage of putting in a small willow fence is that you can use it as an edging to your boarder and keep the plants off the lawn. You could also put in place two strong hazel posts and tie some twine between them, across which the plants can be draped. This would allow you to make the support more of a feature, rather than trying to hide it. Nowadays you can get blacksmiths to make up all kinds of metal framework. These can be very elaborate with decorations such as leaves and vines, to make a structural piece which can stay out in the garden all year and give you a focal point in the winter. They cost a lot more money but they offer different aspects in the garden when the plants have died back. You can get most blacksmiths to make these to design, or you can pick them up

from garden centres. I often look at what I want, then visit the shops at the end of the growing season and pick them up in the sales ready for the following year. There are companies that make hoops or interlocking wire supports. They are usually painted green so they can’t be seen and are really good for disguising supports whilst growing your plants to set heights. Usually you can buy these at garden centres on deals, because buying a lot of them can get quite expensive. It is important to know before you go to the garden centres what kind of plants you need to support so you can buy the correct heights and numbers.

to stop it twisting or the head snapping off. Make sure when you are tying in that you use the right kind of ties. Herbaceous plants need herbaceous green twine. It is very strong but doesn’t last very long. For a more permanent support, wire is not always a suitable option. This is because it can dig into the stem causing a weak point which can snap later on. It also gives an opportunity for disease to get into the plant. The support needs to be tight enough to stop the plant from rocking around in the wind and causing damage to the plant. Happy tying in everyone!

There are times where you might not need these types of structures, for example if you have a wall which your plants are falling away from. In this situation you could put in some vine eyes and a wire along the wall, tie the plants to this, hiding the ties behind the plants and keeping them still upright. Make sure you choose the right sort of support for the plant: for example a rose would need a small tree stake or a rose stake long enough to support the blooms and the plant in high winds. Often the majority of damage done to plants is in high winds so care needs to be taken that they will be protected. If a plant has a very straight stem this needs to be supported all the way up If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Elgar’s Birthplace . . . a conservation enigma Our Subject Elgar’s family moved to Lower Broadheath for their children to enjoy a country life. Elgar was born at The Firs in 1857 and lived there until he was two, when his father’s work returned the family to Worcester. However his family continued to holiday there and a love for this rural spot - in view of the Malvern Hills – grew strong in Elgar’s heart. On receipt of his baronetcy in 1931, he requested the title ‘Baron Elgar of Broadheath’. At the end of his life in 1934, Elgar asked to be remembered at the home he had loved so dearly; his family ensured that the Elgar Birthplace Museum was founded at The Firs.

of volunteers and dedicated colleagues who support him in his work, Michael will provide an overview of the detailed planning required when taking stewardship of a new property. Our audience will also gain a unique insight into the extraordinary process which prepared The Firs for its re-opening in September 2017. Re-designing the site would have been challenge enough but the greatest conservation enigma to solve was preserving the ‘spirit of place’ - and its musical heart. Our Live Music To enhance our evening, a wind quintet will play interludes of Elgar's early chamber music, which were inspired by Mozart and Haydn.

Although Elgar’s music is still treasured and the Elgar Society is the largest single-artist society in Britain, the Birthplace Museum was suffering the financial burden of dwindling visitor numbers. The National Trust took up the challenge of developing a financially viable property which would preserve this idyllic spot for future generations to enjoy. Elgar’s family have taken over The Plough Inn next door, to preserve still more of Elgar’s beloved village. Our Speaker After the great success of our Autumn Talks, we are delighted to welcome Michael Forster-Smith to launch the first annual Spring Talk for the Friends of St. James. Michael is National Trust General Manager for South Worcestershire. Many of you may remember his excellent presentation for us about Croome last year, a truly inspiring evening. A gifted and eloquent speaker, passionate about art, history and the natural environment, Michael is an acknowledged authority on the Coventry family, Robert Adam and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Elgar’s Birthplace is an exciting addition to the properties in Michael’s care and a new source of inspiration in his working life. Always the first to commend the impressive team The Worcestershire Grapevine

An Exciting It all starts again Newcomer S

itting at my desk one February morning, ostensibly working, but in reality gazing out of the window, my attention was caught by what looked like a brown oak leaf by the hedge. It seemed to be lifted slightly by the wind then dropped back down as the breeze passed. It was a few seconds before I realised that there was something odd about this particular leaf, but it was about seventy yards away and difficult to see.

For once my camera was nearby. Usually on these occasions, when I need it in a hurry, it’s in another room of the house, basically wherever I’ve been staking out a good position to photograph something of interest. Often, by the time I’ve fetched the camera, the something of interest has disappeared. On this occasion my camera was nearer than a pair of binoculars, and looking through it, telescopic lens fully extended, I could see straight The Worcestershire Grapevine

away that my oak leaf was in fact a bird and one I’d never seen before. It was beautifully coloured and I was sure of only one thing: it was a finch. The clue was in the beak - finches have short thick beaks, and this one had the largest of its type I’d ever seen. Camera out and ready I took some very bad photos. Sadly capturing a smallish bird, on a grey morning over seventy yards away and hand held, is more than myself or my equipment can cope with, but nonetheless I have recorded the sighting, proof that I was not hallucinating or suffering from pre-traumatic stress caused by going through a pile of paperwork. Having taken several pictures and too excited to even think about the paper stack on the desk, I rushed to the bookshelves for my bird book, turning immediately

to the section on finches. I knew what the bird wasn’t: not a bullfinch, not a chaffinch - it was too big for either and definitely the wrong colour - so I looked for more exotic birds and discovered, to my delight, that I had a hawfinch in my garden and that is first for me. Hawfinches are on the red list, there are only about 500 - 1000 resident in England. It is also one of the most difficult birds to see. Their markings make excellent camouflage and they are very shy. Winter is the best time to see them, when there are no leaves on the trees. They have been seen on Ragged Stone and Chase End this autumn/winter, so the one in my garden may well be part of the influx from Eastern Europe where crop failures have forced these birds further north looking for food. article by Geraldine Holbourn [stock photo]

Wonderful Apple Trees A

pple trees are beautiful in every season of the year. For most of the long winter months the trees have been bare, and seem to be asleep. Now spring is here the buds immerge from their winter rest and unfold into newly formed leaves. The best is yet to come, when blossom buds form on the branches, just waiting for the warmth of the sun, and then burst into masses of beautiful flowers. I long for this time, especially when you see fruit orchards in full bloom, what an exquisite sight. It’s as if Mother Nature had captivated me with her spectacular beauty . . . and my camera is in action again. The honey bees are attracted to the apple blossoms' fragrant scent and nectar. They move from one tree to the next pollinating each tree as they go. We should thank our honey bees for without them we would have no apples. Later when the petals

26

fall you will find tiny seeds where the blossom was. These seeds will grow into clusters of apples. Half of each cluster should be removed so that the tree can sustain the apples that are left. Summer is the apple's time for growing. Depending on which variety your tree is, the fruit's outer skin may turn red, but not all are red - some stay a delicate green, and most are as sweet as the red. The trees must also grow stronger to sustain the fruit. In the autumn the apples finally ripen, and about two week before harvesting the apples’ food supply is cut off - this makes the apples sweeter and ready for the harvest. The trees have worked hard and provided us with a beautiful crisp, sweet fruit, filling the air with such a wonderful aroma - a good reminder that its time for baking apple pies again!

Apples can be consumed in so many different ways: as pie filling, cooked into sauces and other baked dishes. Many children love the toffee apples or just enjoy apples picked straight from the tree. Apples contain 85.56grams of water, so if you're ever thirsty and can’t find a drink, then eat an apple. They are also full of essential nutrients and vitamins, such as zinc, sodium, potassium, manganese and many more. Not all apples are grown for eating; many varieties are grown especially for making cider and other apple drinks. Whilst researching this article my husband, Michael, and I were very lucky to be invited by Mr Glyn Beaman, a local farmer, to see his old cider press. The cider press dates back to 1700's, and it was originally pulled by oxen, but today it takes two men to push the huge stone around the mill to pulp

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

the apples. The stone is very heavy and so these men would need a great deal of stamina! The pulped apples are then wrapped in strong open weaved sacks, and stacked in a frame. This is known as a cheese, and it is then sandwiched between two boards on the juicing press. When the heavy top is in place two large screws are turned and the cider flows. There were many barrels full of cider stacked against the barn wall. Each barrel was date marked and given an appropriate name for that season. Did you know that apple trees can live for 100 years? In ancient Greece the Apple was considered to be sacred to Aphrodite, and that to throw an apple at someone was to declare your love for that person; similarly, to catch it was to show symbolically your acceptance of that love. After harvest the leaves begin to turn red and brown and fall from the trees, which then spend the colder months of the year storing energy to prepare for the next growing season. I love the way the orchards look in winter, especially how the stark branches stand out on a cold foggy morning. Now we have come full circle, don't you think that the apple trees are amazing? article & photos by Pamela Green The Worcestershire Grapevine

‘Dibnahs’ Open Shelsley Walsh Water Mill For National Mills Weekend on Saturday 12th & Sunday13th May 2018

S

helsley Walsh Water Mill Society welcomes visitors from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 12th/ Sunday 13th May 2018 as part of National Mills Weekend the annual festival of the UK’s milling heritage, and the chance for everyone to explore their local windmills and watermills.

builders, educationalists, IT experts, accountants and an auctioneer. Collectively known as the ‘Dibnahs’, they have lovingly restored the mill over a ten year period to its current working condition for use as a visitor attraction and educational resource. The mill will be producing flour at the event which can be obtained in exchange for a donation towards the upkeep of the Water Mill Society. The theme for this year’s open day is ‘mills and wildlife’ so it is fitting the restoration of the mill pools which power the water mill has provided a habitat for aquatic wildlife and there are now resident moorhen, geese and many other visitors including muntjac deer.

The weekend is coordinated by the mills section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). Entry is free of charge and there is plenty of free parking in the world famous speed hill climb paddock next to the mill. Donations towards the upkeep of the mill will be welcome. The water mill at Shelsley Walsh was part of a farming community approximately 8 miles north west of Worcester in the beautiful Teme Valley until the early 1900s, and, although there has been a watermill on this site since 1308 the current mill shows three stages of construction spanning the last 300 years.

The mill is located near the foot of the Shelsley Walsh speed hill-climb course run by the Midland Automobile Club [est 1901], adjacent to the beautiful 12th Century Church of St Andrews and the Court House where Gun Powder plotters were incarcerated whilst awaiting trial. Power is transmitted from the waterwheel into the farm buildings where it drives restored original farm machinery which will be running at the open weekend. Further information at:

www.shelsleywatermill.com The Shelsley Water Mill Society is a Registered Charity No. 1119771

The Shelsley Walsh Water Mill is the only working water powered corn mill in Worcestershire The Water Mill Society is run by volunteers, with widely varied backgrounds and expertise including several retired engineers,

Special Solution to Loneliness with Man’s Best Friend Barking Mad hosts 'Have a furry companion to stay for a weekend break or longer’

ave you always wanted a dog but worried you couldn’t look after it full time? A company in Pershore is giving people the chance to dog-sit whilst their owners are on holiday. So from Inkberrow in the north, Dumbleton in the south, Broadway in the east and Upton upon Severn in the west Barking Mad – East Worcester, offers dog loving people the chance to take in a pooch on a temporary holiday, allowing you to enjoy the social aspects of going out walking and the company of a wagging tail at home. You would also become a member of the Barking Mad family of hosts which meet periodically at organised events. Last year, Sheila became the proud owner of Barking Mad East Worcester. She lives in Drakes Broughton with her rescue dog, Tilly, having recently moved back to the area following the death of her husband Alan. Sheila says “I can speak from personal experience when I say - with a dog you’re never alone – not only is there a physical presence in your home but when you’re out and about walking with a dog, there is always someone willing to stop and talk to you.” Becoming a host by looking after someone else’s dog whilst their owners are away is all set up and organised by Sheila, who takes this often informal arrangement and makes it fully safe, insured and easy to take part in without costing a penny. As a dog holiday host, you provide a loving home environment where your doggy visitor relaxes and feels at home. Regular exercise and companionship is your part of the deal, the transport is dealt with by Sheila. There is no need to worry about paperwork or dealing with the customer yourself because Sheila takes care of this. All you need to do is meet up with Sheila and you agree together:

Easter Traditions T

he origins of Easter can be traced to the pagan Goddess Eostre or Ostara - the goddess of the dawn and the spring. Our word for the female hormone ‘oestrogen’ derives from her name. Eostre had a hare as her companion. The hare symbolises fertility and rebirth. The early Christians adopted Eostre and wove her into the most important festival of their year. The reason it’s on a different date each year is because it’s the only Christian festival where the date is decided upon by pagan means. Easter Sunday is the Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring (21st March). This is on Saturday 31st March. Therefore, Easter Sunday this year is on 1st April. During Lent, the Christian period of fasting which begins on the day after Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day), eggs used to be a forbidden food. People painted and decorated them to mark the end of Lent and ate them at Easter as a celebration. Eggs are an ancient symbol of new life and are also said to symbolise the rolling away of the stone and the resurrection of Jesus. There are many traditions attached to Easter. Maundy

Thursday has its origins in the commandment that Christ gave after washing the feet of his disciples on the day before Good Friday – the day he was crucified. In England, it became the custom for the royal family to distribute gifts to the poor. (Washing the feet of the poor stopped in the 18th Century!) Maundy money was first distributed in the reign of Charles II. As many elderly men and women as the sovereign’s age receive two small leather purses – one red and the other white. The red one contains money in lieu of food and clothing. The white contains silver Maundy coins – the same number of pence as the sovereign’s age. Hot cross buns, eaten on Good Friday, date back to preChristian times. To pagans, the cross was symbolic of the sun wheel which is in perfect balance at the time of the spring equinox. Elizabeth I passed a law limiting their consumption to

proper religious ceremonies like Christmas, Easter and funerals. Easter Sunday is when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Churches are decorated with flowers after a period of austerity during Lent. The idea of an egg-giving rabbit was taken to America in the 1700s by German immigrants. They told their children to make nests with their caps and bonnets and if they were good the Easter bunny would leave them coloured eggs. Originally these were decorated with vegetable dyes. The first chocolate Easter eggs were made in France and Germany during the early 19th century. The first moulded chocolate egg produced in England was by J S Fry of Bristol in 1873, to be quickly followed by Cadburys in 1875. These days, 80 million chocolate eggs are sold in the UK alone.

Spring ahead towards Fitness Goals

A

fter the recent months that we have experienced, I should think that everyone is keen to get outdoors. Even the most unlikely want to join a sport or become a runner, walker, anything to come alive with the signs of spring upon us. Your mind is ready for bright, warm days. Now, prepare your body . . . Perhaps you’ve been considering your first racing event, maybe just becoming part of your local fitness facility; it just might be the time to put your physical self in full gear. With cold, rainy days and dark

nights behind us, there is one less excuse for delaying your workout. Whatever your goal, capitalise on the promise of spring to get you there. If you have fallen behind on your fitness endeavours, get ready to kick-start your exercise program, the season for wearing shorts is almost upon us. Admit any slacking, get strict and get active. Thrive with Variety Establish a routine that’s the most effective and efficient way to get in shape. Like a machine, the body can get accustomed to a workout

and execute exercises like a habitual process and you won’t see the results that you want. Your mind gets equally bored. Suddenly, you’re susceptible to skipping your workout for more exciting things — like watching TV and other past times. Save yourself and change things! Cross training keeps the muscles guessing. It also helps you accomplish total body workouts through its variety. Different muscles get used in unique ways of training, so mix it up and try something you’ve not done before. Look at what’s in your local community and take advantage, get involved with sports teams or try a fitness class that you’ve never been to, even look into a personal trainer to give you that extra push. Take advantage of what’s available to you and switch activities. Make it a goal to rotate your exercises each day. Timing is Everything Its early days so don’t expect results in a week or two. adjusted golf swing takes practice, the butterfly stroke can be tricky to master. Congratulate yourself on taking an early initiative to get summer-ready. Many fitness benefits arrive gradually, especially improved health issues or desired weight loss. Blood levels, body fat measurements, or the scales may not seem to budge. Stay dedicated and you will reach these goals. They are your reward for long-term commitment. In the meantime, focus on the here and now and use the everyday fitness rewards to carry you along. Feel Good Factor As well as having the arrival of better weather to help us feel great, an invigorating rush of endorphins can also be your prescription to a happier, more energetic day. These feel-good transmitters are released at the onset of exercise. You don’t need to wait for the millionth rep for them to kick in. You don’t need to accumulate them over a three-week period. Take 20 minutes right now and let the good mood begin! Approximately 14 percent of the population uses exercise to reduce stress, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association. Unlike those stubborn pounds, tension can melt off your body in one sweat session. Increased blood circulation, pumped up with those endorphins, is mainly responsible. Physically exhausting yourself in a positive way also provides relief. Exercise helps quiet stressful or obsessive thoughts by distraction; workout mindfully for a true mental break. Perhaps try a new group fitness class or unfamiliar exercise. You will be forced to focus on fitness tasks, not that annoying colleague or overwhelming project.

he Wychavon Parish Games started in 1978, and the aim of the Games remains the same today: to offer all residents of the Wychavon District the opportunity to participate in active sports and pub games. The competitive spirit is strongly combined with community spirit; be that through developing relationships within the teams created in a Parish or the local derby atmosphere between teams from near or neighbouring Parishes. This is why there is a strict rule about participants having to reside within the Parish that they represent. The Games combine a series of inter-Parish/Ward competitions where individual Parishes compete against one another to win individual events and to produce overall winners. The Games offer participants the opportunity to visit other Parishes, experience the hospitality and therein develop relationships to build and broaden communities. For example: the One Day Events are held within a variety of appropriate locations around the District with the Knock Out Events being held on a Home and Away basis, predominantly in Pubs and Clubs, thus enabling a broad scope of venues to be enjoyed.

48

There are two types of competition: One Day Events: Angling (22.09.18); Bell Boating (23.06.18); Bowls (16.09.18); Cross Country (18/07/18); Men’s 5-a-Side Football (01/07/18); Petanque (22/07/18); Rounders (08/07/18); Junior and Senior Table Tennis (07.10.18). Knock-Out Events: Crib; Ladies’ Darts; Men’s Darts; Dominoes; Pool; Skittles. These start in August and continue through to their Finals which are held in the autumn. Engraved Trophies, many of which have been in existence since the start of the Games, are awarded to the Winners and Runners Up in each Event with the much-coveted Silver Salver being awarded to the overall Winning Parish. These Trophies, as well as a number of others, are given out at the annual Presentation Night hosted by the previous year’s overall Winning Parish; this year, it will be held at Bretforton Sports Club in November. Further Details of the individual events are available on the website www.wychavongames.org or from the Secretary Sue Collins on 01905 841269 or susan.collins483@btinternet.com

taly is known for producing numerous products of highquality. Italian designer fashions and cars are very much recognised and sought-after, globally. Many visitors return regularly to Italy, for the enjoyment of beautiful landscapes and coastal areas, plus explorations of Italy’s history and cultural heritage. There are many more attractions and qualities the country has to offer, including very impressive glassware, porcelain, lace and furniture, plus wonderful cuisine and wines, for example. Giacomo Casanova lived during the 18th century. Born 2nd April 1725, in Venice, he lived for 73 years. During his life, the legendary Giacomo Casanova was an adventurer, poet, musician, writer and spy, amongst his many attributes, as well as being renowned for his encounters with females. Entering the University of Padua, at twelve years of age, Casanova graduated at age seventeen with a degree in law and constantly searched to satisfy his desires for love and lust.

During the early part of the 21st century Carlo Parodi envisaged the creation of a Museum & Experience, to offer everyone the opportunity to learn and discover about the life of Giacomo Casanova. Carlo Parodi, founder of Giacomo Casanova Limited and the Giacomo Casanova Foundation works tirelessly, along with professionals, that include university professors, plus many other knowledgeable and skilled personnel and has created the Museum & Experience, for all to enjoy. The first Giacomo Casanova Museum is located in Venice. As well as the very interesting memorabilia, which includes paintings and artefacts from Casanova’s life and times, modern technology and multimedia inclusions allow visitors, of all ages, to engage in and discover – the world of this charismatic man. The romances of Giacomo Casanova, plus the styles and ways of life, of that era, hold much interest and fascination, evoking and satisfying curiosity and intrigue.
