Autumn 2011

Sun Shines at Rainbow Revival A handful of doves made the day at St Wilfrid’s Hospice Rainbow Day which went ahead in Priory Park despite squalling winds, torrential rain, no electricity and reduced entertainment! The family fun day, which should have provided a full programme of activities, as well as the opportunity for Hospice supporters to help build a rainbow of messages to loved ones, sadly didn’t go quite according to plan! It made us realise how much we rely on the weather to hold a successful event – bad weather really does affect our income. However, around 100 supporters did brave the elements and stood in silence as 12 beautiful white doves were released accompanied by the Hospice Ukulele Band, who quietly strummed their way through their version of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ Although the best laid plans do sometimes go awry, the Hospice came up with an excellent alternative event – a Rainbow Revival which took place last month – in brilliant sunshine - alongside our annual Open Garden.

A Reminder Don’t forget our AGM on WEDNESDAY 26TH OCTOBER at 6.00pm in the Day Hospice. Tea and cake will be served at 5.30pm prior to the meeting which will be chaired by Angela Wormald, Chair of the Board.

Target exceeded thanks to you! Thank you to everyone who supported the “Hospice at Home” appeal earlier in the year. The appeal focused on raising £15,000 for additional bank staff hours for the Hospice at Home service and funding was needed in order to help avoid situations where referrals might be turned away due to lack of capacity. We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community who helped us beat our target and raise over £29,000. We also received some extremely heart-warming feedback, an example of which can be found below… “Today would have been my husband’s 71st birthday and thanks to Mel we know he died peacefully. He would have liked others to have this opportunity so I am sending a cheque towards the Hospice at Home team.” To find out more about the Hospice at Home service please call Debbie Allen on 01243 755824.

The award winning garden, which is one of many that opened this summer to raise funds for the Hospice offered visitors the chance to chat to members of our volunteer gardening team whilst enjoying a glass of Pimms and delicious home-made cup cakes. During the afternoon the release of the white doves was repeated thus adding a very special touch to the occasion.

‘Lots’ of Fun Why not be one of the first to start the bids rolling at the Fourth Grand Hospice Auction on THURSDAY 27TH OCTOBER at Westbourne House School, Shopwyke, Chichester. Delicious canapés and drinks will be served at 6.15pm prior to around 60 ‘lots’ going under the hammer. There will be a variety of lots ranging from

holiday houses in Barbados and Majorca to tickets for the England v Ireland match at Twickenham. Entry is by ticket only at £12.50 which includes your catalogue plus drinks and canapés. Telephone bids are accepted. Please contact Judy Hawkins on 01243 825315 or e-mail judyhawkins@fsmail.net to purchase your tickets now!

Simply the Best? Last month our beautiful garden was judged as part of the Chichester District’s Residents & Business Garden Competition. This year we have entered three categories and now we are keeping our fingers crossed that they think our garden is the tops three times over! We will keep you posted!

Welcome... to the Autumn edition of our St Wilfrid’s Hospice Newsletter which looks back at an eventful period, says hello to some new faces and goodbye to our Head of Education, Jenny Buckley, who is looking forward to new challenges. Despite severe weather warnings during the day our third Moonlight Walk attracted more than 750 walkers who stepped out just as the rain stopped and, as if by magic, returned under the fairy light glow of a full moon. Many were walking in memory of loved ones and placed messages and poems on our specially built MEMORIES wall - at the last count there were 250 messages. Our thanks go to Richard Minton and his staff at the Westgate Leisure Centre who continue to give us never ending help and support. As we look forward to the rest of the year and on into 2012

Dudes in Heels Twenty eight brave men signed up to take part in St Wilfrid’s Hospice first ever sponsored ‘Hike in Heels’, which saw them take to the streets of Chichester one Sunday morning in May. The new challenge gave men the chance to ‘dress up’ and teeter their way around a one-mile course in high heels and was the

ideal opportunity for them to get together with their mates, have a bit of a laugh and enjoy a slightly different morning’s entertainment. All that was required from our walkers was an average level of fitness – enough to raise their pint lifting arm without any undue stress as well as raising at least £100 each in sponsorship money!

I know that some of you will be thinking about Christmas. There are some wonderful ‘lots’ on offer at the fourth Grand Hospice Auction at Westbourne House School which could make super Christmas presents or, you could enter our Grand Christmas Draw and walk away with the top prize of £2,500 – but you can only win the cash if you buy a ticket! Why not take part in the Hospice’s first Santa Stroll and Sprint which has been developed from our previous Santa Fun Runs. Our grateful thanks must go to the management of the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum who is offering free entry to the museum to all participants. And don’t forget that you can start ordering your Christmas cards – full details in the leaflet enclosed. I hope you enjoy the read, thanks so much for your support and I wish you all the very best as the festive season approaches. Best wishes Jill

Fame came to five of our fundraisers who were invited to appear on the BBC’s One Show which helped promote our chaps charitable efforts! The team met up with Chris Evans and Angela Rippon and appeared on Rippon’s Britain news section of the show.

A big thank you to all our ‘ladies’ who helped raise awareness of the Hospice nationally and certainly raised more than a smile for St Wilfrid’s – just over £8,000. Don’t forget to invite all your mates to join you when we have announced the date for next year!

Light up a Life Each year St Wilfrid’s Hospice arranges a very special event called Light up a Life at Chichester Cathedral. Light up a Life is an occasion that helps families and friends to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones past and present by lighting candles and writing message cards. The St Wilfrid’s Hospice Light up a Life service will take place on SUNDAY 4TH DECEMBER AT 6.00PM and everyone is most welcome to join us. During the service the lights on the Christmas tree will be lit and baskets containing the message cards for loved ones will be placed underneath. The cards will remain beneath

the tree in the Cathedral for the Christmas season, after which time they will be taken to the Chapel at St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Messages cards will be posted out to our supporters mid-October but can also be obtained directly from the Hospice or any of our shops. Cards will also be available at the Light up a Life service. There is no charge to write a card in memory of a loved one but if anyone wishes to make a donation to help with the continuation of our work in serving the local community then it will be gratefully received. For more information about the Light up a Life service please call Susie Norton on 01243 755810.

Patronage for our 25th Anniversary Year from the Army and returned to live in West Sussex where my life now is supporting young people that are going through a difficult time. I founded the British Inspiration Trust www.britishinspirationtrust.org which will build a Centre of Inspiration in West Sussex for young people facing adversity.” As the Hospice moves ever closer to celebrating its jubilee year in 2012, we are inviting people connected with the Hospice to become 25th Anniversary Patrons and work alongside existing Patrons to promote our excellent work in the community. We are delighted to announce that Phil Packer has agreed to be a 25th Anniversary Patron. So, Phil, tell us a little about yourself. “Whilst recovering from injuries sustained in the Armed Forces I set myself goals to raise money for charities. I’ve now retired

What is your connection with St Wilfrid's Hospice? “My great friend, Jean, was diagnosed with cancer this year. We met in 2002 when she was Mayor of Chichester and I was serving as Adjutant at Roussillon Barracks. Initially told she had three weeks to live, she actually died in a matter of days. Her last wish was to die with dignity and St Wilfrid’s Hospice helped her to fulfill that wish.” Why have you accepted the role of 25th Anniversary Patron for the Hospice? “We might not like to talk

Danny Mac And hello and welcome to Hollyoaks star Danny Mac who says, “As a local lad with close connections to this amazing charity I am extremely honoured and delighted to be supporting St Wilfrid’s Hospice in its 25th Anniversary Year.” Could you tell our supporters a little bit about yourself? I was born in Bromley, Kent and grew up in Pagham attending Chichester College where I

Anniversary Patron. I deeply believe in their work helping patients, their families and friends. Chichester is my community, my home and it is important for me to give back to our community.”

L-R Chris Sweatman, Charlotte Wilkinson, Liam Hook and Ollie Mason at the summit of Mount Snowdon. Liam Hook had always wanted to walk up Mount Snowdon. So one dark cold winter’s evening he suggested the idea to his friends, Charlotte, Oliver and Christopher and between them they agreed to join him and raise money for charity. At the time Charlotte’s Mum, Bernadette Wilkinson, had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was under our care (sadly Bernadette has since died) and they chose to raise funds for the Hospice. The four friends have raised around £1,500 and are truly overwhelmed by the generosity of their friends and family. So are we – well done!

trained in acting. There followed three years training at The Arts Educational School, London prior to my first job in the West End Musical ‘WICKED’ and subsequently being cast as the role of Dodger Savage in Channel 4 soap ‘Hollyoaks’. And what is your link with the Hospice? I am proudly linked to the Hospice via my Mum who has been a Nurse there for many years. I am extremely proud of the person she is, how hard she works and how much she loves and cares about the job she does

Why is your role as 25th Anniversary Patron important to you? I think it is easy to forget people like my Mum and her colleagues who are incredibly caring people who have their own lives and problems, which they leave behind when they go to work and care wholeheartedly for others. And if I am in the slightest position to bring this information to the attention of just one other person then I’d like to do that so as to keep this wonderful place up and running in my community, one I’m very proud to be part of.

Lavant News By kind invitation of Sir Jeremy Thomas, Lavant Support Group took over his lovely East Lavant garden one Sunday in May and hosted a coffee morning selling plants, cakes and books. Although a slightly chilly morning, this did not deter the many people who came raising £335 for the Hospice. A big thank you to Tony and Hazel Bleach for helping to make our Race Night such fun and a huge success raising over £430. Lizzie Gibson, Lavant Support Group

Prinsted for nearly three months but that soon passed and 279 visitors enjoyed this award-winning garden. Nearly £3,000 was raised for the Hospice. Grateful thanks are due to all helpers and visitors for

supporting this event. Do come along to our Italian Supper on Saturday 19th November at St John’s Church Centre, Southbourne. Tickets available from Hilary Gilson on 01243 372187.

A Great Success Selsey awoke to a blustery, overcast day on Sunday 29th May. However, the lack of sunshine did not deter over 620 visitors taking the garden trail around the town to view the 17 private and two public gardens on display. The day raised £4,236.78 which has been shared equally between St Wilfrid's Hospice and the Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group. Thank you to all the garden owners who kindly opened their gardens for the day and everybody else who helped make the day such a resounding success. Margaret Goodman & Ann Humphrey

Sunflowers on a Sunny Morning So what happens to all the books that are donated to the Hospice shops? Many are quickly snapped up by our supporters and those that are left on the shelves are sold on and recycled. Paper can only be put through the recycling process seven times before it turns into sludge however, even in this final stage the paper is used to create tissue paper, kitchen rolls and loo rolls. So the good news is that if you donate a book to the Hospice we make money out of it either way AND continue with our efforts to reduce the amount of paper-based material ending up in landfill.

Supporters of the Jack Edmonds Memorial Fund turned out on a lovely sunny Saturday morning to sell sunflowers for the Hospice. Thanks to the co-operation of staff at Sims Williams, who filled their windows with sunflowers, the collectors had a central venue from which to venture forth. Angela, our magnificent Town Crier, proclaimed the good news about the fund, the man to whom it is dedicated and the work of the Hospice; so enthusiastic was she that her voice failed her towards the end of the morning! All the collectors reported wonderful feedback from people who had been touched by the care given by the Hospice and £547 was raised. The Jack Edmonds Memorial fund has already raised in excess of £8,000. Please help us to continue to support the wonderful work of the Hospice; we will all, inevitably, be touched by the need for their care, if not for ourselves for someone close. Once again, thank you Arundel. Jenny Edmonds, Arundel Support Group.

from our ‘Meet and Greet’ volunteers awaits everyone under the care of St Wilfrid’s at our new drop-in Orchard Centre and café. Volunteers such as Juliet Brecknell, who, up until she retired three years ago, was a Marie Curie Cancer Care Nurse looking after people in their own homes. Following retirement Juliet decided she wanted to make use of skills and although apprehensive about taking on patient care at the Hospice opted, instead, to be a receptionist in the main Hospice. With the opening of the Orchard Centre in June a new role for receptionists evolved which suits Juliet whose warm smile and welcoming manner soon puts everyone at their ease. Open every Wednesday, the Orchard Centre provides a calm atmosphere where patients, families, friends and carers can relax and enjoy a chat amongst friends. Whilst here our visitors can find out what else is on offer throughout the day, such as creative classes, exercise groups or complementary therapies. As a ‘Meet and Greet’

volunteer, Juliet, finds her new role much more focused and quite different from her job in main reception which involved answering a multitude of questions, taking phone calls and serving in the shop. For Juliet, first impressions definitely make a lasting difference to our visitors as she feels it is important they feel at ease and want to pay us a return visit! She says, “Numbers are growing. Families and patients on the ward pop down to see us and carers who bring in their loved ones often stay for a chat and a cup of coffee. For some it is a surprise to see the variety of activities on offer in which they can be actively involved. “Lots of us know our patients by name, but whether we do or not, everyone receives the same warm welcome.” For more information about the Orchard Centre, call Katharine Campbell on 01243 755829 or if you would like to know more about volunteering contact Emma Clark on 01243 755815.

Good News! In April, we were thrilled to learn that the Hospice had been awarded a £25,000 grant by the Garfield Weston Foundation, a grant-giving foundation established in 1958 to support UK registered charities. The grant was given specifically for utility costs, including water, electricity, gas and telephone charges. As we all know, energy costs have risen significantly in recent years, and St Wilfrid’s is not immune - this generous grant will greatly assist us in paying for these vital services.

Out With the Old and in with the New! “In with Mumford & Sons and out with Barry White!” that’s what our new Head of Education, Michele Booth, said as she entered the Hospice Seminar Room and spotted her predecessor’s ‘antiquated’ CD collection on her first day of work at the Hospice! However, apart from throwing out Jenny Buckley’s golden oldies, Michele knows that there is nothing fuddy duddy about Jenny whose innovative ideas have made St Wilfrid’s one of the leading Hospice Education Centres of today. Moving down from London and living just round the corner from the Hospice Jenny first joined St Wilfrid’s as a Bank Staff Nurse. From here she was offered a permanent position by Matron Pat Camilleri who told Jenny that a Tutor post was being created and she should apply for the position. So she did, thinking it was a part time role which would work alongside caring for her three young children. It was only at the interview stage that she found out it was a full time position! But she accepted the job, juggling childcare with her role which, at first, was split between Education and working with the Clinical Nurse Specialist team. Over the course of time Jenny has concentrated more on Education producing the Advanced Communications Course, working with Help the Hospices on Outreach Training and developing a link with Winchester University to run one of the first degree courses in Palliative and End of Life Care. Like Jenny, Michele qualified as a nurse with her first job working as a Staff Nurse at St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley. From here she worked for four years on a gynaecological ward after which it was back to education

looking after 11-18 year olds with life threatening illnesses at the Valence School in Kent. In the last 18 years Michele has worked as a District Nurse, was heavily involved with teaching at the King Edward VII Hospital in Midhurst prior to its closure and latterly as a Practise Educator and Leader of the Community Team at The Rowans Hospice. She says, “The concern you have for patients is easily transferred to students – still supporting people through a difficult time in their life. If you are a care giver you look after students in the same way.” Now set for new challenges Jenny is looking forward to retirement, undertaking a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing at West Dean College and wants to write a novel whilst Michele is ready, willing and able to step into her shoes! L-R Jenny and Michele

My tribute to Jenny I first met Jenny when I started at St Wilfrid's in 1997; by that time the education department she developed was already doing great work. I was struck by Jenny’s passion for her work and the drive that she had to ensure that the training she gave to staff made a real difference. In particular I recall her telling me how important it was that our courses helped those who were working in care homes and caring for dying people. Jenny has worked tirelessly to build St Wilfrid's Hospice a fantastic reputation for providing high quality education and training and

we are all enormously grateful to her for doing this. I know there are hundreds of students too who have learnt so much from Jenny, some of whom had not studied for some time and gained a new found confidence due to her support and encouragement. I thank Jenny for being a great colleague to work with, for her endless enthusiasm and tremendous support to me over the years. We all wish her a very happy retirement on her next great adventure!

A day in the life of a Become a Friend of St Wilfrid’s Hospice Hospice Doctor “I have become a “Friend of St Wilfrid’s Hospice” and would urge everyone to do so. I am enthused that there is no pressure to give a specific amount as a “Friend” and my call to arms is to ask you to show support and to give as little or as much as you want. I am proud to be part of this truly remarkable organisation that serves so many without us really knowing what goes on there - quietly, passionately and with dignity. I am sure that people from all ages in the community will share pride in becoming a ‘Friend of St Wilfrid’s Hospice’. Together, with help from the local media, I hope we can give strong acknowledgement and support to our Hospice that has given 25 years of dedication to thousands in our community.” Phil Packer, 25th Anniversary Patron Losing her husband and father within 10 months of each other has given Dr Charlotte Williams a new perspective on what it is like to be a widow. Charlotte, who has been working as a Specialty Grade Doctor at St Wilfrid’s since April 2008, sadly lost her husband in a motor car accident in 2007 whilst living in America and her father to cancer under the care of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. She says, “Grief is so different for everybody and we need to be respectful of people’s emotions and being where they are – not where we are! As Doctors we need to be aware of what happens to families after a loved one has died, the words we use and the little things we say which might stay with people.” Charlotte works three days a week and every fourth weekend either on the inpatient ward, out in the community or in the Day Hospice. She also refers patients to the Hospice at Home service and is always on call to answer questions. Her day starts at 8.45 am with a cup of strong coffee which she takes into ‘handover’ where the nurses let her know any changes over night on the ward. It is a

good opportunity to communicate with the team before having a referrals meeting with the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team to discuss whether a Doctor or a CNS needs to see a patient on their first visit. The rest of her day could be spent seeing patients in the Day Hospice who might need a blood transfusion, attending meetings, carrying out home or hospital visits to new referrals, reviewing existing patients with complex problems for the CNS team or teaching in the Education department. Charlotte has two small children Emily aged eight and Katherine aged four. The family share a home with her Mum, Del, a patient care volunteer at the Hospice. She enjoys playing the piano, reading, walking and writing and, although experiencing writer’s block at the moment, she is in the midst of writing a book about her experiences. Charlotte says, “I enjoy working at the Hospice, love the team and the way everyone pulls together knowing that if there any problems we try and solve them together. There is a great family work ethic here and an appreciation of how important family is to people”.

Out in the countryside The Salterns Way Charity Cycle Ride was an event that Peter Godfrey always supported. Sadly Peter, a former trustee of St Wilfrid’s Hospice, died last year, but friends and family decided to enter a team and help to

raise much needed funds for the Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support. We just wanted to say a great big thank you to them and everyone who took part in the event raising just under £8,000 for both charities.

A Moonlit Night for our Walkers More than 750 ladies and gentlemen turned out in the middle of June to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Although the weather was wet and windy for most of the day come the evening it cleared and our walker’s put their best foot forward and set off on the Hospice’s third sponsored 10 mile walk. The event saw the walkers, which included 70 men and 79 teams, walk the streets of Chichester taking in cobbled paths, the Roman Walls and the Bishop’s Palace Gardens which is not normally open to members of the public after dark. Over the last two years our walkers have helped to

raise nearly £200,000 for the Hospice and we hope that this year’s pledges will significantly build on this amazing total. So far with walker’s pledging to raise well over £67,000 in sponsorship - together with business sponsorship, registration fees and expected gift aid - our supporters will raise in the region of £90,000! Our grateful thanks to all those who took part, our generous business sponsors and our wonderful band of volunteer marshals and stewards who all helped to make the event such a huge success. If you would like to take part in next year’s Moonlight Walk which is planned to take place on FRIDAY 15TH JUNE,

‘Hospice care, be surprised’ is the theme of Hospice Care Week this year from 8th-14th October. To mark the week we are welcoming everyone to St Wilfrid's for an open afternoon on SATURDAY 8TH OCTOBER FROM 1.00PM UNTIL 4.00PM. Come and find out more about what we do, meet staff from different departments and discover the role that everyone plays in the care we give to our patients and their loved ones. Preventing Falls on the Ward

For we have places up for grabs in next year’s Brighton and London Marathon teams. We’ll give you all the support we can to get you into the team spirit with a ‘carbs’ filled pasta party before the event, running vests, goodie bags, training tips and a great big boost on the day from our Marathon cheerleaders! The nursing team at St Wilfrid’s have been entered for a Nursing Times Award to recognise their successful work to prevent falls among inpatients on the ward. Some falls are unfortunately, inevitable when people are very sick and frail, but by completing risk assessments and implementing individual care plans and equipment for patients who are at risk, the nursing team has been extremely successful in reducing the number of falls that occur. The nurses were given extensive training on assessing patients at risk, including scenarios and role play that gave them some insight into how it feels to be vulnerable when moving and prone to falling. Staff Nurse, Laura Bow says, “The scenarios highlighted things we take for granted which actually become huge
