Church History
As Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church commemorates 100 years of faith, community, service and fellowship, we are proud to celebrate this 100th Centennial Anniversary celebration like no other. We have joy in witnessing the milestones the Lord has blessed us to see at Green Grove.
The church demonstrates a great history of inspirational preaching, effective teaching and dedicated members who compassionately serve others. Over the years, the church ministry efforts have been beneficial to those in need. In the book of Romans, Paul talked about the discipline of looking back: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. “Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 15:5-6, (KJV)”.
As believers of faith, we look back to learn, to gain endurance and encouragement, so that we can look forward with unity and hope.
On September 12, 1921, a church was born in a small house on Norris Lane in the historical city of Augusta, Georgia. The original birthplace of Green Grove and location are across the street from its permanent dwelling place at 1692 Old Savannah Road. Organized by a small body of faithful Christian believers, these servants of God saw a need for a church in the community and they set forth to organize and implement Green Grove, which is now a beacon of light and great church in the Augusta community. Many souls have been saved and added to the church as God ordained.
During the inception of Green Grove’s history, citizens in the country and our local community experienced firsthand degradation, segregation, and blatant racism. The civil rights movement was active through the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) whose mission is to ensure political and educational equality of minority groups and work towards removing all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes and eliminating racial prejudice.
As Green Grove celebrates 100 years of service, we thank God for His protection, guidance, abundant blessings and being the Shepard of our church. As God continues to lead us in the next phase of service, we strive to touch lives near and far away where the Lord has purposed us to reach. Psalm 27:14 (KJV) declares us to "wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord." As the church and body of believers, let us wait upon the Lord always because He has the best plans for us.
The fabric of our history is rich, and God has blessed this church with generations and remnants of His grace and mercy. We are blessed to bear witness to this history through our 100th year celebration. Over the past 100 years, Green Grove has touched the lives of thousands of souls and has had 12 dedicated pastors serving the church family since its inception on September 12, 1921. "May you find Christ here; may you bring Christ to the world" is more than a prayer or a song, it's a way of life that has been practiced in the church for well over a century. The following pastors have served as servant leaders to this historical church underthe guidance of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Reverend Able White, a devout Christian man of faith, was one of the founders and the first pastor at Green Grove. "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" Philippians 1:6. Reverend White was a pioneer who evangelized, organized and won souls for Christ. Reverend Charlie Williams, Sister Mary Gibson, Sister Lelia Smith, Sister Nancy Williams, Brother Willie Bennett, Brother Moses Jenkins, and Brother Mack Roberson were the other founders of the church. Reverend White served faithfully for three years. Under his leadership, Deacon Hayward Lawton and Deacon Butler Harden were ordained and served under his administration.
1924- 1926 Reverend T. L. Lyons
As a servant leader, Reverend Lyons became the second pastor of Green Grove. He was faithful and the church continued to grow in membership and souls were added to the church under his leadership. After serving for two years, Reverend Lyons resigned.
As the church continued to grow and kingdom building expanded, the work of God in the community grew. Reverend Joe Willis preached the gospel and souls were saved. Under his leadership, the following deacons were ordained and added to the administrative roster: Deacon J. H. Youngblood, Deacon Willie Waltower and Deacon Josh Morrel. Reverend Willis’ tenure was three years, and he later resigned.
1929- 1933 Reverend R. D. Boyd
While serving the flock for a short period, Reverend Boyd worked diligently in spreading the gospel of Christ and baptizing new converts. He preached the gospel of Jesus Christ and continued to revive souls at Green Grove with the spoken word of God.
1933- 1957 Reverend P.A. Green
Reverend P.A. Green was a devoted man of God with great leadership ability, vision and zeal. He was a man of firm conviction. The church grew and grew requiring more space to preach and teach the gospel. Reverend Green was given a vision from to grow and seek a larger edifice to preach the gospel. It was under Pastor Green's faithful leadership and administration that the church relocated to 1692 Old Savannah Road (its present dwelling). Additionally, the church was also renovated to accommodate believers and aesthetically enhance the church's appearance. Reverend Green worked diligently in the community and with body of believers. Under his leadership, the following ministers were ordained: Reverend D.M. Gaines; Reverend A.W.Anthony;Reverend WillieStriggles; Reverend Solomon Franklin, Reverend Andrew
mmond, Deacon John Adams, and Deacon Harry Williams. Reverend Green faithfully served God, the church, community and his family until his health failed and the Lord called him home from labor to reward.
1958- 1969 Reverend George Wingfield
Reverend George Wingfield became the sixth pastor to serve at Green Grove following great faith, accepted the calling by God to pastor Green Grove. He was a fervent educator who advocated and taught Christian Education in the church and was involved in the community preaching the gospel. Reverend Wingfield loved his family and the church alike. Many souls were added to the church and the members grew spiritually under his devoted leadership. Reverend Wingfield also ordained three ministers: Reverend Willie Williams, Reverend Ephfran Williams, and Reverend Roy Parris, Sr. Additionally, Deacon Jimmie Lee Neal, Deacon Fred Benefield, Deacon Roger Utley, Deacon JamesWashington, and Deacon Odell Turman were all ordained as deacons to the church. Reverend Wingfield severed faithfully until his death.
1969- 1970
1970- 1979 Reverend R. F.Thompson
Reverend R. F. Thompson was called to serve as pastor. The church grew in membership and economically. Under his leadership, Deacon Henry Howard, Deacon James Jennings, Deacon Cardell Davis, Deacon Sam Gantt, and Deacon Eugene Tate were officially ordained as deacons. During Reverend Thompson's tenure, the property adjacent to the church was purchased and central air and heating were installed. The annex was added and church was completely renovated at a cost of $30,000.00. Many souls were added to the church as the flock continued to grow. Additionally, Reverend Thompson established a mentorship program for junior deacons. Ordained deacons mentored the junior deacons of the church, training them to carry out devotional services through public prayer and the singing of spiritual songs and hymns. Junior deacons appointed included Larry Lawton, Vertiz Howard, Arnold Holmes, and Henry D. Howard. After faithfully serving Green Grove since 1979, Reverend Thompson resigned to accept a pastoral position at another
1979- 1981 Reverend B.T.Moore
Reverend B.T.Moore from Atlanta, GA became the ninth pastor following Reverend Thompson's tenure and resignation. Reverend Moore, a graduate from Morehouse School of Divinity, was actively engaged in the community and dedicated to spreading the gospel and winning souls for Christ. Under his leadership, many young people joined the church, and he was a strong advocate for educating the masses. While serving, the Teacher's Norm program was introduced to support and train Sunday School teachers in preparing and delivering their lessons. As a result, Sunday School attendance rose, new teachers volunteered to lead classes, and the church continued to flourish. Prayer, weekly Bible Study, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America were organized, two choirs were combined, H.L. Howard Choir and the J.H. Youngblood Choirs were named as the new “Inspirational Gospel Choir." Under Pastor's Moore's administration, Deacon Karlton Howard was ordained and the church's cornerstone was constructed and laid on the building.
1981 - 2006
Reverend Lessel Leonard
With the help of God’s almighty power and a vision for growth, Reverend Lessel Leonard became the 10th pastor succeeding Reverend Moore. He was a builder and a man with a vision under the guidance and power of God. Reverend Leonard was an educated leader with compassion, and love for God, his family, the community, and fellow Christians. The church grew spiritually and economically and many souls were added to the body of Christ. Reverend Leonard appointed Reverend James Williams, Jr. as the Associate Pastor. The following ministers were licensed: Reverend Phillip Hammond (07-27-1986), Reverend James Kendrick (ordained 12-18-1988), Reverend Jerry Freeman (ordained 0531-1992), Minister Derrick Monk (08-22-1993), Reverend Karlton Howard (ordained 1126-1995), and Minister Clifford Jackson (2003). Nine deacons were ordained: Deacon Lannis Fryer, Deacon Terry Martin, Deacon Clarence Shipman, Deacon Demas Lenard, Jr., Deacon Henry D. Howard, Deacon Willard Thompkins, Deacon Bruce Hammond and Deacon Stacey Williams. Deacon Benjamin Moultrie and Deacon Joe Francis were added to the administration.
Under Reverend Leonard's leadership, 15 trustees were appointed (twelve men and three women): Brother Paul Lattimore, Brother Eddie Turner, Brother Lucious Rhone, Brother Bruce Hammond, Brother James Bell, Brother Clyde Hightower, Brother James Parrish, Brother Charles Smith, Brother Darryl White, Brother Ernest Allen, Brother Robert Beaty, and Brother Ricky Williams. In 1986, Sister Joyce Holloway, Sister Mary Adams and Sister Jane Myrick became the first women trustees.
On September 13, 1987, the mortgage was burned at the Homecoming Celebration. Additionally, several parcels of property within the community were purchased along with two organs and office equipment to further progress the growth of the church. Reverend Leonard found solace in Exodus 14:13-15 (KJV) that states, "And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. And the Lord said unto Moses, wherefore criest out thou to me? Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward.” The church's debt was paid off, making it possible for the church to make plans for a new edifice. With faith in God and building fund revenues of $60,000.00, the church met its goal to erect a new building. On August 30, 1992, Green Grove held its final worship service in the old building and anchored temporarily at 2517 Milledgeville Road in the Williamsburg Plaza. These services were recorded for lasting memories. On September 1, 1992, demolition began on the structure where we worshipped for approximately 59 years. Construction began immediately afterwards with Mr. George W. Price, the architect, and Green Grove Trustees as contractors. Pastor Leonard, Trustees James Parrish and Lucious Rhone served as Construction Coordinators.
The new edifice was erected with a cost of $375,000 and this undertaking could have not been accomplished without faith in God, realizing that all things are possible if you only believe. We were blessed with members in our congregation who laid the foundation and paved the parking lot (Brother Leon Williams). The electrical work was performed by Trustee James Parrish. The pews, church steeple, baptismal pool, and sanctuary lights were purchased from Howard's Church Furniture, at a discount, by the late Deacon HenryL.Howard. The church was blessed to begin evening service, Christian Empowerment and Praise service, each Sunday. Matthew 28:19-20 teaches us that the primary function of the church is to win souls for Christ.Ministries such as the Food Bank, Scholarship, Church Advisory, and Children’s Worship were implemented. Through the grace of God, prayers, gifts, and tithes from the church family, various goals were set and accomplished in full payment to include purchase of Compaq computer equipment, large color television, VCR, and a commercial stove at a cost of over $6,500.
A true leader of strength and compassion, Reverend Leonard often quoted a scripture from 1 Corinthians 2:9 (KJV), “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” Under Reverend Leonard's leadership, the church acquired a Sharp copier and marquee to display in the front of the church. The Children's Choir was re-established, Pastor's Aid Ministry developed, the Mass Choir purchased choir robes, and a Young Adult Choir was formed as "Vessels for Christ." Many of the members also joined the 10th District Youth Choir and they performed on many programs throughout Georgia. During Reverend Leonard's tenure, heestablished theNew Savannah Road Social Services, the first 501(c)3 non-profit organization at Green Grove, designed to reach inner city youth and senior citizens. The organization focused on academic tutoring for students 6-18, Summer Enrichment Program, health awareness and prevention, along with social activities. He desired for citizens to complete their high school education and Reverend Leonard implemented the GED program at Green Grove through AugustaTechnical College. He served faithfully until death and God called him home to his reward.
2006 - 2010 Reverend Norman V. Carter, Pastor
Upon the death of Reverend Lessel Leonard, on September 12, 2006, Reverend NormanV. Carter wascalledtoserveastheInterimPastorat GreenGrove. Reverend Carter served under the leadership of Reverend Lessel Leonard and he provided administrative and financial training to parishioners. He was gifted in these areas and freely shared his knowledge while organizing and prioritizing education and training in the church. Reverend Carter was one of the sons of the house at Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Gregory M. Fuller.
Reverend Carter was called to serve as the eleventh Pastor at Green Grove on June 12, 2007. The church was blessed with his administrative and financial knowledge. He often reminded the faith family to "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV). Souls were added to the body of Christ as the church grew. He used his spiritual gifts of administrative oversight in assisting the church to develop an annual budget, church calendar, and monthly administrative meetings for the Deacon and Trustee Ministries. Additionally, Reverend Carter implemented a New Discipleship Leadership training and many souls were saved. Under Reverend Carter’s leadership, he licensed two ministers of the Gospel, Minister Stacey Williams and Minister Richard Sims. He also appointed Brother Joseph Hughes, Brother Victor Carmichael, Sr. to the Trustee Ministry. Reverend Carter developed and implemented the Servant Leadership Award recognizing leaders for their discipleship, faithfulness, dedication, and servant leadership abilities. Deacon Demas Lenard, Jr. (2007); Brother Ronnie Wells (2008); Sister Rose Brown (2009) and Deacon Joe Francis (2010) were recipients of this award.

With faith, great vision and foresight given by God, Reverend Dr. McElrath delivered God’s Word by preaching through a National COVID19 Pandemic and executed the first virtual church via Facebook. He was determined to continue spreading the gospel to many people throughout the United States by any means necessary. He is a true servant leader and ambassador for God. The word of God found in Hebrews 10:36 (KJV) states: “For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” Virtual Prayer and Praise service was implemented on a nightly call-in line (7 days a week, to include holidays), virtual Sunday School via Zoom was implemented, Bible Study, virtual Communion, virtual giving of Tithes and Offering, Daily Devotional Moments, Jesus’ 7 Last Words during Resurrection Sunday, and Virtual Fall and Spring Revivals are among the many ways Reverend Dr. McElrath continues to reach souls through spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a result, many individuals have been saved.
We thank God for His faithfulness and promise to bring to fruition all the work that He started. We continue to trust God and know He will guide the church to greater heights as we move forward in celebrating more anniversaries and counting our blessings in years to come. Green Grove continues to be a church of impact and power while transforming lives. In echoing the words found in Philippians 1:6, (KJV), “Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
Finally, Paul also talked about the discipline of looking back in Romans 15:4-6, (KJV): “For whosoever things were written, a fore-time was written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus; that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
As we review our rich history, we look back to learn, to gain endurance and encouragement, so that as a church we can look forward with unity and hope. Truly, if it had not been for the Lord, Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church would have not made the progress we have today in sharing our past legacy. We thank God for his untiring love, faithfulness, and saints who have served and sacrificed, and of the ministry the church has accomplished. May the good Lord be glorified forever.

Psalm 100
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
