ew Jersey is cracking down on home appraisal discrimination against homeowners, buyers and real estate agents based on their race or nationality, according to a new set of initiatives announced Friday by Attorney General Matthew Platkin.

North Jersey high school box scores for Jan. 12

The state Division of Civil Rights (DCR) and the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) developed the Home Appraisal Discrimination Initiative — designed to address inequities in home appraisals that have been documented in both New Jersey and the nation. The initiative was informed by Gov. Phil Murphy's existing Wealth Disparity Task Force, established in 2021.

This comes after the state Senate approved a pair of bills in December — one being the Fair Appraisals Act — that were aimed at cutting down discrimination during property appraisals in New Jersey.

former Connecticut city alderman who won a Republican primary for mayor while facing charges related to the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor for his actions in Washington. Gino DiGiovanni Jr., who lost the November election for Derby mayor, pleaded to a trespassing charge — entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds — during a federal court videoconference hearing. Sentencing was set for April 15. He faces up to six months in jail under federal sentencing guidelines.

His lawyer, Martin Minnella, said the plea deal was a fair resolution of the case, given DiGiovanni wasn't violent that day. Minnella said police were holding the Capitol doors open when DiGiovanni entered the building. “He didn't break anything. He didn't force his way in,” Minnella told The Associated Press in a phone interview Friday. “But he did remain in there when he wasn't authorized. ... This is an aberration in his life and hopefully he can turn the page.” Minnella added: “Certainly we don’t condone the conduct of a lot of other people. It was a terrible situation that got out of control.” Continue He saidreading DiGiovanni was at the Capitol on Jan. 6 “ i hi i h ii ”

Davis was 67. Her family did not immediately respond to a request for comment. She died of esophageal cancer on Jan. 1, according to The New York Times. Davis previously shared her diagnosis in 2021. She was also diagnosed with throat cancer in 2019, which changed the sound of her voice. Her TikTok page has been posthumously updated with new videos, so many fans were unaware that Davis had died. Tim Davis told The New York Times that his mother had asked him to post content that was already edited. Recent videos uploaded to her social media pages show her vlogging a recent trip to Italy. Davis started making TikTok videos with her son Tim during Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020. She won two Streamy Awards in 2022 for best food creator and best editing. Tim Davis shared in his video announcing his mother's death that, beyond cooking, she loved traveling, running marathons and animals. Davis is survived by her sons Tim and Sean Davis, daughters Hannah Mariko Shofet and Becky Steinberg, two grandchildren, her husband Keith Davis and her siblings Jay Yamada and Karen Dolce Yamada, according to The New York Times.
