More than 1,300 students now study Full-Time at Grantham College on a variety of Further and Higher Education courses, with hundreds more enrolling on day-release and evening courses.

INSPIRE, EMPOWER, ACHIEVE Sustained Support Whilst we aim to instil confidence and independence, you are never on your own at Grantham College. Every student is assigned a Personal Tutor with whom you can discuss your studies or share personal matters. The College Careers Adviser and Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team are on hand should you need advice, whilst our experienced Learner Support Team is always available to offer guidance on other aspects of student life, whether it be finances, accommodation or travel.

Work Experience Grantham College offers the chance to apply your studies to real life via exciting work experience opportunities. Hospitality & Catering students train in the live public environment of the college’s Apple Tree Restaurant. Public Service students share training and facilities with the Army, Navy and Royal Marines. Travel & Tourism students jet off to diverse destinations which can include Italy, Hungary and Disneyland Paris.

Visual & Performing Arts students are the stars of an annual overseas trip, whilst Early Years students have the opportunity to experience nursery settings in Sweden.

Student Volunteers Throughout the year, Grantham College students are involved in a variety of volunteering opportunities which not only add to their CVs, but also help to build strong links with the community. Recent projects have included assisting at Belton Horse Trials and taking part in the maintenance of local churchyards.

International Students Students have the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures thanks to our growing international associations. We regularly welcome students from the Far East, whilst Hungarian, Polish and Swedish students join us on work experience.

National Union Of Students As a student at Grantham College you can join the NUS and take advantage of their support and benefits. For £12 an NUS Extra card offers discounts with high street stores, local taxis and much more. Our Students’ Union also holds regular social and networking events and charity campaigns.

Student Voice The student is central to everything we do.

In 2012/13 more students than ever were involved in college life. The number of NUS members grew for another year. We improved our methods of communicating electronically with students through the introduction of text messaging.

We organised our largest ever student conference and held it at Grantham Guildhall. Our students raised over £1,000 for national and local charities.

SKILLS FOR LIFE

Dyslexia Support Dyslexia describes a number of different factors which can affect an individual’s learning. Grantham College is responsive to all the needs of the dyslexic student, who can experience difficulties in a range of areas such as: writing, reading, handwriting, spelling, memory, sequencing and organisation.

An assessment will ensure you have the conditions you need in examinations, and identifies support you may require for your course.

Any dyslexia support will be delivered through individual or regular study sessions with tutors.

Functional Skills and GCSE All students aged under 19 at Grantham College who have not attained a grade ‘C’ GCSE or above in either English Language or Maths will participate in Functional Skills or GCSE lessons. These lessons will form part of your programme of study. These skills are essential for Higher Education, future employment prospects and to allow you to reach your full potential.

Study Skills Support Study Skills Support helps you develop confidence in your learning abilities and acquire the necessary study skills to be successful on your course. The support is usually delivered on a one-to-one or small group basis and can cover a variety of skills, such as: organisation; time management, prioritisation and goal-setting; notetaking and summarising notes; research skills; writing assignments and essays; producing projects, reports and presentations; referencing and plagiarism; and revision and exam techniques.

These study sessions aim to support your transition from school to Further Education. They begin with an assessment which identifies your areas for improvement and strategies to help you develop these. In this way all sessions are exclusively tailored to meet your individual needs. The skills you develop can also be transferred and used in future learning opportunities.

Apprenticeships

How do they work?

If you are keen to enter the world of work but don’t want to stop studying, then an Apprenticeship could be the answer. Over 806,500 people started Apprenticeships last year.

Apprenticeships comprise industry specified components known collectively as the ‘Framework’, all components being mandatory to achieve full completion. The majority of the training for your Apprenticeship would be delivered in your place of work, which would include planned visits from an occupationally competent assessor. You will attend college regularly, typically one day a week, to complete Functional Skills and the technical certificate for your chosen Apprenticeship Framework. You will also have regular contact with an Apprenticeship Adviser who will closely monitor your progress and be on hand to provide you with any additional support you may need. After you have completed a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship there may be an opportunity to progress on to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and Level 4 Higher Apprenticeships.

So what exactly is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that provide the opportunity to study towards nationally recognised qualifications and gain hands-on industry experience. As an apprentice you get the best of both worlds by getting paid while you learn. Cash in your pocket and the chance to learn skills that employers want make Apprenticeships a very attractive option. Apprenticeships are designed to ensure you gain the fundamental skills and recognition you need in today’s demanding job market.

LEARN PROGRESS GRADUATE

AS & A LEVELS With a wide range of subjects on offer including the traditional English, Maths, Sciences and slightly less traditional Anthropology, Law and Sociology, you would normally be expected to complete four AS Levels in your first year, followed by three A2 subjects in year two.

In 2013, the overall A Level pass rate was 97%.

Many of our students went on to study at university in locations including Sheffield, York, Nottingham, Lincoln, Bournemouth and Leeds.

As well as being a Platinum Young Ambassador for Inspire+ and a torchbearer for the Olympics 2012, Tracey has recently completed her AS/A Levels in PE, Business, Chemistry and Maths.

It was Tracey’s sister (a successful previous A Level student at Grantham College) who told her about the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of college life, where being treated like an adult helps with the transition to university. All of this made Tracey’s decision to study at college rather than stay on at school an easy one.

Tracey is now at Nottingham Trent University studying Sport Science & Management.

Access TO Higher Education If you need a flexible and confidenceenhancing course to get you back into education, then our highly successful Step into the Future and Access to Higher Education courses are for you. A variety of teaching and assessment methods will prepare you for your degree.

Pathways include Social, Biological and Physical Sciences as well as English Literature and Art & Design, which open the door to a wide range of careers from midwifery to teaching and nutrition.

Zoe Harris C AS E S TUDY

Nominated for the Keith Fletcher Access to HE Memorial Prize 2012–13 for ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement’, Zoe was able to see another side of ‘scientific Maths’ so it was out with the log books and in with the scientific calculator.

With peer support, study groups, social interaction and culture of learning, developed in a great environment, Zoe threw herself into study, made new friends and took on new challenges.

Living out of Grantham wasn’t an issue as the course start and finish times allowed Zoe to drop off and pick up her son from school. Although Zoe could still be a mum doing the school runs, she knew she would have to dedicate time to her studies.

‘My advice to anyone is to create a space, a designated place and time to study.

I’m a firm believer that a concentrated two hours can make a massive difference.

Don’t worry about the housework – it will always be there. Use a diary! My time management improved tremendously, as I had to be more organised to get through the work.’

AT COLLEGE SMALL CLASS SIZES MEAN PLENTY OF TIME WITH YOUR LECTURERS

Having achieved an outstanding 90 Distinctions – well over the 45 Merits needed for the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree at Lincoln University – Zoe feels more than ready for university life, equipt with undergraduate study skills such as how to use an Athens account and the Harvard referencing system.

On completion of university there will still be more study with 18 months of training still to get through, but Zoe can see the light at the end of the tunnel – a career in which there is a lot of fun to be had with microscopes and white coats!

Access to Higher Education CAVA Step into the Future Course Code: PGA25020 Level: 2 Duration: 17 weeks You Need: No formal qualifications, although applicants will require a basic level of numeracy and communication skills Method of Assessment: Students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence and complete a variety of assignments Course Content This course is suitable if you plan to return to Further Education or want to update your CV. It is a flexible programme of study that aims to re-skill adult students.

The course fulfils the requirements of a Pre-Access course and if you progress on to the Access programme you may be able to transfer some of your Level 2 credits to count towards your final Access certificate.

This Pre-Access course is designed to be flexible enough to suit your needs, especially if you have personal, domestic or work responsibilities which you need to fit around your studies. The course enrols twice every academic year (in September and late January) and all classes are timetabled between the hours of 10.00am and 3.00pm, two days a week, with no classes during the school holidays.

Course Code: FGA25040 Level: 3 Duration: 1 year You Need: Applicants will be assessed as to the appropriateness of starting on Access to HE or Step into the Future Method of Assessment: Coursework Course Content This course has been designed to be flexible to suit your needs, especially if you have personal, domestic or work responsibilities which need to be fitted around your studies. The course enrols twice in every academic year (in September and late January) and all classes are timetabled between the hours of 10.00am and 3.00pm, three days a week, with no classes during the school holidays. For 2014 you will be able to choose two options from Social Sciences (Psychology & Sociology), English Literature, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry & Maths) and Art & Design. You will also develop your IT and study skills and will have the opportunity to take GCSE English, Maths or Science as part of the course. Teaching methods are varied and include lectures, workshops, self-directed research and study, laboratory practicals and seminar presentations.

Opportunities If you successfully complete this kitemarked Access course, you will be awarded a diploma by the Cambridge Access Validating Agency (CAVA).

Our Business Studies courses will help you understand how organisations are run, as well as looking at the different business functions including Finance, Law, Marketing and Recruitment.

During your course you will have the opportunity to take part in work experience and/or be part of the Young Enterprise Scheme, allowing you to put into practice what you have learnt in the classroom.

Dakota Kirby C AS E S TUDY

A former St Hugh’s student, Dakota is studying the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business, which is an area he has a great deal of interest in. The practical elements of the course, including Young Enterprise where Dakota is MD for his group, are what he enjoys most: he has fully embraced the role of MD and lets nothing faze him when discussing business ideas with the group.

If he had the opportunity to improve the course, Dakota said he would like to go on more educational visits. Although he went to the EU Houses of Parliament in Brussels and then to the Houses of Parliament in London, which he thought linked in very well with the law element of his course, he thinks a few more trips would help strengthen what is taught in the classroom.

Describing his course as motivational, educational and challenging, Dakota plans to go to university once he’s completed his studies at Grantham College.

AAT Accounting Apprenticeship Accountants are in demand across all industry areas, especially within the finance and banking sector. It takes a good head for business and a way with numbers to succeed in this field of work.

This Apprenticeship allows study towards a recognised qualification whilst in an employed position. It is aimed at providing the necessary skills and qualifications required for starting a career in the accounting industry. Of course, you won’t reach Accountant status immediately. Most apprentices qualify as Account Assistants, Account Clerks, Cashiers, Credit Control Clerks, Data Input Clerks, Finance Assistants, Purchase Ledger Clerks or Sales Ledger Clerks.

Customer Service Apprenticeship Customer service is a demanding but rewarding field of work where effective communication and a high level of interpersonal skills are required.

The Apprenticeship Framework has a range of learning options covering impression and image, delivery, handling problems, development and improvement.

Retail Apprenticeship Retail sales jobs can involve a broad spectrum of duties and activities depending on the product, service and merchandise offered by the employer. Because of the high levels of client interaction, successful Sales Assistants will need a combination of good negotiation skills and diplomacy.

A former St Hugh’s student, Charlotte studied ICT at school and decided a career in IT was the way forward for her. Charlotte, now on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in ICT, really enjoys the variety the course has to offer, as in one lesson she could be learning about e-Commerce whilst in another it could be software development.

Although in her first year of the course Charlotte carried out work experience at a website company in Nottingham which was useful, her long-term plan is to gain as much knowledge as possible about the industry so she can become an ICT tutor.

Chris Greensmith CAS E STUDY

Chris studied a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science after coming from Sir William Robertson High School, where he thoroughly enjoyed Science and has done so since a young age.

Although Grantham College is Chris’ local college and was therefore his first choice, he had heard good things about the college and the course, and describes the course as interesting, difficult but fun.

He really enjoys the Chemistry practical sessions of the course but isn’t as keen on the large number of assignments, although understands the need for them!

Chris feels that an area for progression within the course would be to encourage and help its students to gain as much work experience as possible throughout the year, so they can see how elements of the course apply in the real world and also help them determine their career path.

Chris has since gone on to Nottingham Trent University to study Forensic Science.

SCIENCE

Course Content This course has been designed to be flexible to suit your needs, especially if you have personal, domestic or work responsibilities which need to be fitted around your studies.

The course enrols twice in every academic year (in September and late January) and all classes are timetabled between the hours of 10.00am and 3.00pm, three days a week, with no classes during the school holidays.

A former St Claudia’s, Billingborough student, Natasha commutes from Bourne to study on the Extended Diploma in Animal Management Level 3. Natasha first studied Level 2 in Animal Care before starting the two-year Animal Management course last year. Natasha really enjoys the in-depth knowledge you gain on the course as well as the teaching methods that result in a solid understanding of the subject along with a mix of practical experience. Trips to Rutland Water, The Deep, Hamilton Zoo and Crufts have cemented the theory and practical learning.

During her studies, Natasha undertook work experience at a local kennels, which resulted in her gaining a part-time job and where she also volunteers in the local dog rescue side of the business. In the next few years Natasha would like to continue studying at Grantham College on a Level 4/5 course before finding work as either a technician or in animal conservation.

Her long-term career goal is to work with wolves, hopefully in Yellowstone, America.

PERFORMING ARTS & MEDIA Our Performing Arts course will give you opportunities to develop and extend skills across the disciplines of acting, musical theatre and dance in our fully equipped, dedicated performing arts studio and rehearsal space. This is because the industry requires people to have knowledge and practical experience across the areas, thus equipping you with the necessary range of skills for further progression.

If a career in the media industry is your dream, then we have excellent media facilities, including an editing suite and production studio, providing you with the skills to progress into your chosen career.

The Technical Theatre course covers lighting, sound and stage management areas of background work.

Students studying Media are set live briefs throughout the course to give them real-life experience of working on projects, including working to a brief and deadlines but providing them with artistic licence.

Students work on music videos for local artists, including Simple Kid and Gingersnaps, and this year are working with Abi Moore.

MEDIA TRIPS CAS E STUDY

As part of the Media courses, students take part in trips to further cement what they have learnt in the classroom.

In previous years, trips have included going to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – Harry Potter to enhance understanding of animation techniques; BBC Studios London, where students had the opportunity to record script reading in one of the live studios; and BBC East Midlands, where they had the chance to be in the production room and get to grips with all the equipment used.

PERFORMING ARTS & MEDIA

Media students were involved in ‘Gravity Fields’ – a dynamic and creative line-up of science, arts and heritage events held in Grantham in September 2012 – and are already planning for the 2014 festival, where they will produce a documentary based on the event for the co-ordinator, Rosemary Richards.

In 2012, students made a promotional video demonstrating community involvement relating to the Grantham Carnival. Students found the brief very hands-on, as the Grantham Carnival includes a lively parade, rides and performances.

Adam, now 17, completed his Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery last year before starting his Level 2 Apprenticeship (with local company Smedley Joinery) this year.

Adam first attended an open evening to see if Carpentry & Joinery was for him.

Here he received fantastic information from the staff in Carpentry & Joinery and was shown around the facilities, at which point he decided Grantham College was the right choice for him. Although Adam has only been on his Apprenticeship since September, he is thoroughly enjoying the new skills he is learning and being able to put into practice, but not so much the long day in class on Wednesdays: ‘Although I can see the benefits, it’s just the thought of being at work at 8.30am the following morning after a long day in the classroom,’ says Adam! Adam has high praise for his tutors and the compliment is returned by the staff who said: ‘Adam’s work ethic and dedication is fantastic, he will certainly go far in the industry.’

Carpentry & Joinery Apprenticeship Carpentry and Joinery are expert trades that require attention to detail and accuracy.

We offer both wood occupation routes on the Apprenticeship programme. A Site Carpenter at this level of study would be involved in providing the basic skills on site of installing wood structures and fittings to assist in the construction of buildings and other construction projects.

Stephen Farrington CAS E STUDY

Grantham College Plastering student Stephen Farrington took part in the SkillBuild competition at Vision West Notts College in April 2013 where he finished the day in 1st place.

SkillBuild is run by CITB with the endorsement of WorldSkills, competition managers for the bi-annual WorldSkills competitions, and covers ten craft occupations including Plastering.

The event pushes the contestants to the limits, as it requires excellent craftsmanship under pressure from the time limits of the event. Stephen spent several weeks prior to the event practising whilst attending college and also keeping up to date with his college studies.

The task set was to build a structure from a set drawing with a six-hour time limit. Stephen also competed in the competition in 2012 and finished 2nd. Once again this was a great achievement and it gave him the mindset and experience to go and win the competition in 2013.

Ben completed his Level 1 Plumbing in 2012 and enrolled on the Level 2 Plumbing course as he wanted to develop his skills even further to enable him to either go on to an Apprenticeship in 2014 or gain employment.

Ben had heard good things about the facilities at Grantham College as he has friends on other Construction courses here; plus it’s his local college! Ben likes the practical aspects of the course, including soldering and figuring out the right angles for bends, and would like to be able to put those skills into practice more by working in different real-life settings.

Ben will do this as he has gained work experience at a company in London for a week in late 2013.

As part of the course, Chelsea works in the college’s enterprise shop, ‘Little Gems’, where she enjoys serving customers, ordering stock, helping with stock take, labelling and ticketing items, and displays as well as using the till and card machine.

Chelsea was awarded ‘Sales Person of the Year’ due to her commitment (she often stays behind after she should have finished and comes in to help on her days off), her people skills, dedication and promotion of the shop and CaFE.com.

Chelsea has also helped out at open evenings and at external events that Little Gems attends.

English is Natalia’s second language, although that hasn’t stopped her from throwing herself into college life – she was part of a group of students who went to Hungary for two weeks’ business work experience where she saw how various businesses are run in a different country.

Rachel joined the hairdressing department at the age of 15 after moving from London. It was too late for her to choose options at her new school so she decided to embark on a link college course at Grantham College – the Young Apprenticeship Diploma in Hairdressing.

This saw Rachel attending college from school for two days a week over one year and having to complete two years’ work within that year.

Having successfully completed the qualification, Rachel then went on to study the NVQ Level 1 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing and has progressed through to the VRQ Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing.

Kyle’s interest in the hospitality and catering industry came when he had to choose an element to focus on during his Transitions Xtra course and he hasn’t looked back. He really enjoys the food preparation and front of house cooking side, but this part of the course has seen him grow in confidence.

Kyle really enjoyed a trip to London that included a visit to the famous Savoy Hotel, where he saw the kitchen being run (a real eye-opener for him). Although Kyle is not sure what type of kitchen he wants to work in once he’s completed his studies, he can’t wait to put all the skills he’s learnt into practice.

Hospitality & Catering Apprenticeships You would need to be in relevant paid employment and working at least thirty hours a week to undertake this Apprenticeship.

To reflect the many career options on offer for those working in this sector, this Apprenticeship has several pathways. If you’re interested in working ‘front of house’, you could train as waiting staff and learn how to serve customers, or train in drinks service – one of the fastest growing sub-sectors. Apprentices interested in cookery could either train as a chef in a restaurant, or learn how to cook on a large scale for institutions like the NHS or Armed Forces. You could work in all sorts of kitchens, from fine-dining to chain restaurants through to gastro-pubs. There are specialist pathways to cover all kinds of fare, including Bangladeshi, Thai, Chinese, and Indian. Apprentices with an interest in the hospitality side of the sector could be working in a hotel reception area, helping to run a B&B or youth hostel, or keeping a hotel clean and tidy.

The minimum duration for an Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeship would be 12 months, with opportunity to progress on to an Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship (subject to job role and duties).

STUDENT VISITS Following on from a new calendar of trips for students in 2013, this year’s intake will continue visits to local hotels, restaurants, food providers and producers as well as a series of trips dedicated to each year group.

First-year students can look forward to a range of trips, which could include a visit to Ascot Racecourse’s stunning new grandstand with their impressive restaurants, an overnight stay in London to experience the lively markets of Billingsgate and Smithfield, or a chance to see behind the doors of one of the capital’s most prestigious hotels.

The second-year group will be visiting Brussels at the invitation of a regional MEP. They will visit the European Parliament building, the Christmas market, the Chocolate Museum, an internationally recognised micro-brewery, specialist pastry shops, and will also enjoy a tour of the city.

As part of the Leonardo Programme, Level 3 students will spend two weeks on work experience in the magnificently diverse city of Valencia. This is an invaluable opportunity to gain experience of catering in a bustling and vibrant city environment.

TRAVEL & TOURISM Our Travel & Tourism courses strive to offer a great combination of taught lessons and practical training, either in our full-scale replica aircraft – Grantham Air – including baggage handling, check-in and security area, or through external visits. In 2013, some of our Travel & Tourism students were able to visit Rimini in Italy, where they gained valuable experience working in a range of hotels. Visits were also made to the Virgin Atlantic Training Centre, Tate Liverpool, The Lowry and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Tom undertook a two-week work placement in Rimini, Italy as part of the Leonardo Programme, where he worked on reception at a hotel. Tom said, ‘The experience was invaluable. I got to see how a hotel is run overseas and got to learn some Italian whilst there.’ If Tom could change anything about the course, he said he would like the opportunity to undertake more work experience so he can put the skills he has learnt in the classroom into practice.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is a charity set up to support young adults in order for them to develop new qualities and skills whilst taking part in different activities.

Achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to universities.

You can make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime. You may already be undertaking voluntary work that may be recognised by the Award Scheme.

Adventurous Training TRIPS As part of the Public Services course all students will investigate the benefits of fitness and adventurous activities for the services.

Once they have gained the relevant experience and knowledge, each group conducts a minimum of a week’s adventurous training package. Those students on the Extended Diploma will also be expected to take part in a variety of expedition packages. These adventurous training packages consist of hill walking, kayaking and mountain biking, to name a few.

In 2013, the Level 3 students went to Snowdonia and completed activities that challenged everyone, regardless of their ability, from cycling the Marin Trail to coasteering in the rough and cold seas around the Welsh Coast.

All students had an ‘amazing time’, learning new skills along the way.

One student said, ‘Whilst in Snowdonia, we took part in a range of activities in a mixture of weather conditions – we were soaked whilst on our day expedition! I felt tested and stretched throughout all I did and I enjoyed spending time away with my friends.

I can’t wait to go again next year!’

Sean has recently completed the Level 3 Sport Development, Coaching & Fitness course, which he describes as being exciting, physical and fun. When asked what he liked most about the course, Sean said, ‘Getting to do a vast amount of different sports, some of which I have never tried before, and getting to design my own games and fitness circuits.’

Sean would highly recommend the course as he says the tutors are ‘spot on’ with advice since they all have different specialised backgrounds with a vast amount of knowledge.

Adam Harrison CAS E STUDY

As well as studying for his A Levels at Grantham College, Adam is also part of the Table Tennis Academy, which has a reputation in the Table Tennis world as having the best players and fantastic training facilities.

Adam has been playing for the last seven years or so and has been training with Head Coach Alex Perry for the last five years. To get to where he is now, 4th in the Under 18s, Adam trains approximately 16 hours a week and that’s not taking into consideration any matches at the weekend.

Adam would say his top three achievements for the last year include:

■■ Lincolnshire Senior Champion ■■ 5th place at Masters (out of 14) ■■ British College’s Men’s Singles Champion.

To date, the best experience of being part of the Academy is to have played in the Safir International Tournament in Sweden in February 2012, in which he hopes to play again in the future.

After finishing his studies Adam hopes to go to university to study Maths, but would be just as happy playing table tennis full time!

Grantham College is ideally equipped to provide the very best in table tennis coaching. The college benefits from a large sports hall in which the table tennis coaching takes place.

In addition, there is also a competition standard Table Tennis Centre in Grantham.

Accommodation Detailed information on fees for college-owned accommodation for 2014/15 will be available from January 2014. Accommodation is available on campus in Sedgwick Hall and Sedgwick Mews. A total of 67 places are available and all rooms are furnished with their own en-suite facilities (shared bathrooms in Sedgwick Mews).

Rent is payable termly.

Our accommodation was inspected by Ofsted in March 2012 and graded Outstanding.

If you want to live off-campus, you should contact the Student Services Manager who may be able to help arrange alternative privately rented accommodation close to the college. Further details are available from the Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team on 0800 0521 577.

Travelling to College Secure storage for bicycles is provided and shower facilities are also available.

Car Parking Limited student parking is available for blue badge holders before 4.30pm. After 4.30pm car parking spaces are available and provided free of charge to students and visitors. These are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional parking can be found at the public car park situated in Welham Street, close to the main campus.

Library

E-Learning Centre The e-Learning Centre has been designed to provide you with a state-of-the-art learning environment. The Centre has 31 open access PCs, all with internet access, Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 10, with some available to book in advance. Black and white and colour printing and photocopying facilities are also available. The Centre also lends laptops for use both on and off campus. In addition, there are 4 separate Skills seminar rooms, or ‘pods’, each equipped with between 15 and 24 PCs and a data projector. The Centre is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Fridays during term time.

Conference, Exhibition & Refectory Facilities

The college has a well-stocked library.

Learning resources available to you include 30,000 books, a wide range of journals and magazines, DVDs, daily newspapers and an online catalogue system for research use and book reservations. You can also access the internet via 10 computer workstations.

The college subscribes to collections of electronic books and online databases which can be accessed on campus and from anywhere you have internet access. Wireless internet access is available in the library and is also available at selected locations around the college. The library is open from 8.30am to 6.00pm on Mondays, 8.30am to 7.15pm Tuesday to Thursday, and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Fridays.

Conference, exhibition and refectory facilities are available for hire by the public at the main campus. In the past, the college has played host to a wide variety of different organisations. Our Refectory is available for hire for celebrations, and catering can also be provided. Little Gems

Food & Drink

Having launched in November 2010, Little Gems gift shop has seen its customer numbers increase over the last few years.

Refectory & Nixx A wide selection of meals are available from the main Refectory at very competitive prices. Snacks are available from vending machines throughout the college and also from Nixx, our shop and cafeteria. Nixx has seating for over 100 people and provides a choice of hot and cold snacks, including confectionery, paninis, bagels, salads and jacket potatoes, as well as stationery, cards, personal items and postage stamps. Evening meals are available from 4.30pm Tuesday–Thursday.

Apple Tree Restaurant Students, staff and the general public are all welcome to dine in the college’s Apple Tree Restaurant, which is run by the Hospitality & Catering department. The restaurant is open for lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with an Early Bird Grill Night on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Fine Dining on Wednesday evenings.

Located on the top floor of the Main Building, it offers an outstanding view of Grantham!

Premier Hair & Beauty Salon Open to students and the public, Premier Hair & Beauty Salon is L’Oréal and Eve Taylor accredited and offers a full range of very reasonably priced services, as well as highquality hair and beauty products to suit everyone. The shop is situated in the foyer at Grantham College and the main aim is to give learners with both physical and learning disabilities an opportunity to experience the ‘World of Work’ in a real retail environment. The shop sells quality items including homemade goods, handbags, jewellery, cards and much more. Many items on sale are Fairtrade.

Little Gems is open term time Monday to Friday 9.30am–4.30pm.

Careers & Higher Education Advice Careers advice and guidance is available via an appointment system to current students and anyone considering coming to study at the college. It is also available for members of the public. The college has a Matrix Quality Award for its Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment services and a Career Mark for its Careers Education. The College Careers Adviser is based in the Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment area. The Careers Adviser will also assist you with UCAS applications and interview preparation if you want to go on to Higher Education.

Sport The college has an excellent range of sports facilities including a large indoor sports hall, and PowerSport, a supervised fitness suite, containing cardiovascular machines and weight training equipment. This facility is also open to the public at reasonable rates.

Students also have the opportunity to represent the college in a wide range of sports including basketball, football, hockey, netball, rugby and boccia.

The StAR Forum is a democratic organisation which presents your views to the college management.

Stepping Stones Nursery is the partner nursery for Grantham College. The nursery is a short distance from the college grounds and provides fulltime day care for children aged from birth to 11 years old.

Stepping Stones aim to provide a secure, caring and stimulating environment in small, homely, age-specific areas. Children are encouraged to progress at their own pace and to fulfil their potential in all areas of development. In August 2010 the nursery was graded Outstanding

by Ofsted. Nursery opening times are 7.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Nursery fees are charged at ÂŁ4.35 per hour, although discounts are offered for Grantham College students.

The nursery has anSTudent open door Academic Reps policy; therefore parents are welcome to view the nursery at their convenience and appointments are not necessary.

Personal Tutors On enrolment you will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is responsible for your welfare whilst you are at college. They will monitor and support you with your academic progress and provide help when necessary. This includes supplying references for employment or Higher Education.

Student Finance We understand that studying at college may cause financial problems. We have a Student Finance department that provides both existing and prospective students with advice and guidance in relation to Student Finance, while also providing financial support to students studying at Grantham College.

We may be able to help you with support from the different funds available to us, depending on your age and personal circumstances. These include the 24+ Loan, 16–19 Bursary Fund, 19+ Further Education Discretionary Support Fund, Care to Learn, Student Travel Fund for those aged 16–18 who live out of the area, and Higher Education (HE) finance applications.

If you are aged 16–19 and are in care, a care leaver or receive income support in your own right, you may be entitled to a bursary of up to £1,200 per year. Please let us know if that applies to you as soon as possible!

Additional Costs – Clothing & Equipment

Grantham College has a statutory and moral duty to ensure that the college functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults receiving education and training at the college. However, there will be a charge should you need to re-sit examinations. Tuition fees for students aged 19 or over as of 1 September 2014 will be charged in accordance with the Skills Funding Agency guidelines.
