The School of Science On Wednesday 22nd April, 40 boys from Year 9 travelled over to Goodison Park, home of Everton FC. We were greeted by several members of Everton in the Community team, one of whom attended our previous end of year Graduation. We listened to several different staff members who informed us about their roles at Everton. After listening, all the students were surprised at the amount of different job roles that could be taken at the club. Then we embarked on our stadium tour aided by Lilly, who seemed to know everything about the club and it was easy to see that she was a true Evertonian. We were fortunate enough to see a variety of facilities at the ground such as: dressing room, executive seating area, pitch side and executive seats. Sitting inside the Home dressing room was a real highlight!

Afterwards, we ate our lunch and boarded the bus to go to Huyton, where we were to have our training session. The training session was led by five different Everton coaching staff. There was three main stations, these were: goalkeeping, possession/passing and a small sided match. All the students had a great day and really seemed to benefit from the achievement and behaviour for learning incentive. Tom Basson and Jack Shingler- Jolley, Year 9.

Hair and Beauty At the start of March Year 10 and 11 students attended taster sessions at Riverside College for both Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. The students thoroughly enjoyed these sessions where they had a go at some Nail Art, Smokey Eye makeup and a Curly Blow dry.

With stalls ranging from splat the rat to the raffle and the cake stall to penalty shoot-out, there was an amazing variety of activities which were all run by the students. New TagTeam This half term has been a busy one for our TagTeam, with one cohort of students completing their 12 week course and a brand new team visiting MediaCity for their very first TagTeam session. Since TagTeam began in January, students at The Grange have had the opportunity to work with Media and Digital (MaD), based in Widnes, to learn all about the world of media. Creating videos about events in school such as Red Nose Day, World Book Day and The Charity Coffee Morning, students have produced a range of fantastic videos which demonstrate not only their skills and ability, but also the vast number of events going on throughout The Grange. The new team is involving students from more year groups than ever, from our Year 5 students all the way through to Year 9. As well as learning skills of photography, film making and graphic design, the TagTeam also helps students develop skills of communication and confidence which help them to make new friends and work as a real, functional team. With so many exciting events coming up in school in the final term, we are looking forward to seeing the excellent work of the TagTeam continue, demonstrating the fantastic work that is going on throughout The Grange. Keep looking on our Facebook and Twitter pages for more information and videos soon!

Erin MacDonald Having successfully won the Runcorn and District round of the Rotary Club Youth Makes Music competition, Erin MacDonald took to the stage for the regional finals where she demonstrated her talent, competing against the very best voices in the North West & Wales. Erin has been having singing lesson at school for the past two years and in that time she has made remarkable progress and has developed her own unique style and tone which has helped her to impress judges at all stages in the competition. Erin was one of the youngest competitors left in the Rotary Club’s annual event and as she took to the stage at South Cheshire College in Crewe, she showed the dedication and professionalism needed to succeed in the music industry. The judges were very impressed with the quality and sound of Erin’s voice for her age and cheered on by family members, friends and teachers, Erin did herself proud, performing I Dreamed A Dream form Les Miserables and Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri. Erin is already looking forward to entering the competition next year and we are so proud of all she has achieved both in this competition and throughout her time studying music at The Grange. We look forward to supporting Erin over her last year at school as she enters more competitions and proves how much talent we have here at The Grange.

Oxford University A group of students from Year 8 were given a unique opportunity this term to work with an organisation called The Brilliant Club who help students begin to understand the road to higher education. At the start of the program, students had the opportunity to visit Durham University and after completing the course, the group had the chance to visit the prestigious Oxford University and gain an insight into the life of an Oxford student. Throughout The Brilliant Club program, students have entered intellectual debates, researched demanding topics and even written an essay which was marked and assessed as if it was a university level piece of work. All participants have worked extremely hard and a number of students did especially well, graduated the program with a 1st class essay.

The trip to Oxford University was a fantastic experience for the students, with an opportunity to ask questions, tour the state of the art facilities and receive the certificate and appreciation that they deserve after all their hard work. A tour around Oxford city centre, including Christ Church and the Bodleian Library concluded the days events and all students returned to school excited for the challenges ahead and looking forward to further education once they leave The Grange.
