Continuing the development of our work as a Stonewall School Champion, we have been noted as a flagship school for our inclusive curriculum, and therefore invited to present nationally to other schools at the annual Stonewall Education for All Conference on Friday 10 July at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre, London.

Class of 2015 Prom at the Castle

The conference is the key annual opportunity for School Champions to share best practice on tackling homophobia, hear from experts and link up with professionals from charities, universities, local authorities and other organisations. The conference includes a large range of workshops exploring different key LGBT issues within schools. We have been asked to present in one of these workshops to show how we make our curriculum inclusive of LGBT issues, and how we utilise all subject areas to do this. The presentation aims to show other schools and charities how creative our staff here at The Grange School are in finding ways of implementing such important messages in lessons, by using all subject areas, and highlighting key figures and facts related to LGBT issues. This has been done by making reference to celebrities, key dates in legislation, challenging stereotypes, plus our on-going work in assemblies and PSHCEE lessons. We are honoured to have been invited to present at the Conference, and look forward to continuing our work with Stonewall in the future.

This year, The Grange year 11 students decided to break with tradition and look for an alternative venue for prom. Four possible venues were sought and a Power Point prepared to give all students within the year all the

information for them to make an informed decision about their preference. Brandon Hayes and Natasha Preston then had to deliver a ‘pitch’ to senior staff to gain permission for their Prom to be held within the beautiful surroundings of Peckforton Castle. What a fantastic decision this turned out to be. The students were thrilled with the venue and felt extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to have had their Prom at the castle. They were really impressed with the regal setting and thought the food and service was great. In fact, they have already started to encourage our new year 11s to follow in their footsteps for next year. Students enjoyed the disco and the DJ definitely tapped in to their likes and dislikes as the dance floor was a hive of activity. A sure sign of a successful evening was how quickly it went and the disappointment expressed by the students when we had to leave and get back on the coaches. Staff commented that the whole evening was extremely well run and the surroundings and facilities lent themselves to a stress free and extremely enjoyable evening. Mrs Thomson commented in her vote of thanks, that the staff did not feel as though they were completing a work related duty and were able to relax and trust that the students were conducting themselves with great maturity and respect. Many of our staff commented upon the professionalism of the Peckforton staff and how they welcomed our students, adding to their enjoyment of the evening. Staff also thoroughly enjoyed the meal and commented that it was the best Prom meal they ever had.

Sampling Day at Cronton College 106 Year 11 students visited Cronton Sixth Form College for a ‘Sampling Day’ on Tuesday 23rd June.

The aim of the visit was to begin to engage students in considering their futures and to highlight the importance of their GCSE grades, in giving them wider choices in their post 16 education.

A great night was had by all.

Prestigious Universities Programme Sixteen of our more able and talented Year 11 students took part in a prestigious universities event held at Cronton Sixth Form College, on Wednesday 1st July. This event was open for students who are likely to achieve 7 A grades or more in their GCSEs. It was an exciting opportunity for students aspiring to study at Oxbridge and other prestigious universities to find out what it takes to become a student at these elite universities. Students had the opportunity to speak to current students from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This provided them with an insight into what life and study are like at two of the most respected universities in the world!

Wirral Coastal Walk On Sunday 28/06/2015 twenty two students from year 11 and five members of staff completed the 15 mile Wirral Coastal walk in aid of the Grange School nominated charities. They met in school at 8am and started the walk from Seacombe Ferry terminal. The walk hugged the coast and students walked passed, New Brighton, Leasowe, Hoylake, West Kirby and finished at Thurstatson Country Park. The walk took just over 6 hours to complete with all students successfully getting to the finish line in one piece. Each student was sponsored and together with collections from the whole school at break and dinner (in the 2 weeks prior to the event) we are expected to raise well in excess of ÂŁ700.

Capital Work from the Franklin Scholars Mr Willmott very kindly organised a trip to London to the Franklin Scholars Award Ceremony at Wesley’s Chapel; here is his account.

After a gruelling year of hard work and responsibility, I had the pleasure of taking part in the Franklin Scholars Awards Ceremony in London. Showing their true resilience, they left school with Mrs McBride and myself after first lesson and caught the train to Euston (upgraded to First Class!). Issued with tube tickets, we took the underground to Old Street and then made our way to Wesley’s Chapel where we were met by the program coordinators, Jess and Olly and our very own head teacher, Mr Carney.

the intrinsic value of helping other people. The Scholars then received awards for motivation, perseverance, imaginative thinking and several other categories. During the afternoon, the Scholars were given the chance to meet students from all over the country and strengthen the network of the Franklin Scholars Programme. The ceremony finished at 4.30 after a closing speech from our Head Girl and head Boy, Megan Hughes and Dominic Williams describing their experiences and sharing what they had gained through the programme. With several hot hours left to spare in London, we then moved to full tourist mode and visited the Houses of Parliament, Westminister Bridge, the Globe Theatre and Tower Bridge via the entire Southbank and Pizza Express. With time to spare, we arrived back at Euston Station, hot, tired and ready for an air conditioned trip home.

The ceremony itself was led by guest speakers from all over the country, including Richard Branson’s son Sam, and was kicked off by Mr Carney who gave an inspirational speech about making the right choices and explaining
