Holiday Weight Gain?

A simple formula could help put an overweight dog on a healthier path.

Take your pet's weight in pounds, divide that number by 2.2. Next, multiply that number by 30, then add 70. This number is the number of calories your pet needs each day to maintain his or her current weight.

Feed your pet 70% of this number for weight loss until your dog reaches the target goal, then return to the "maintenance" instructions on your dog food label. Check with your veterinary provider for your dog's ideal weight range, particularly if there are any underlying health concerns.

Shopping for something your dog will love this Christmas? Consider a new blanket. To many dogs, they are more than just something soft to lay on? Blankets not only offer warmth to our dogs but for many a sense of security, just like a child with a security blanket. They smell like you when your away at the office. They smell like home when your dog is kenneled or traveling, and they are perfect for that cold night in front of the fire. But wait, European studies tell us that dogs like to sleep with a cover, just like humans, so maybe shop for a summer weight or sheetlike cover for the warmer seasons and climates too.

While all of these smells can be comforting, it's essential to be sure your dog's blanket or blankets are laundered on a regular basis as part of proper pet management. Your dog will also become familiar with the scent of your laundry detergent or fabric softener as it relates to the environment. From minky to high tech faux fur, there is undoubtedly a blanket your dog will get excited about this Christmas!

While You Were Out...

According to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, 32% of pet parents leave the television on for their dogs when they are out of the house. Research at Tuff's University tells us that dogs don't like loud music, particularly heavy metal, so what you leave on the screen may make a difference with regards to how relaxing your dog's time at home is, while you're out. Other studies indicate that your pup may be happiest with something you would typically have on when your home, offering familiar sounds and reassurance.

Tip Your Groomer?

When it comes to tipping groomers for their services, you might be wondering what's appropriate and whether you should tip at all.

Typically, salons recommend that you tip their employees for excellent service. It's a great way to show you're appreciation for a job well done.

Most groomers work on commission, and some receive a flat fee for each pet completed regardless of the size of the style required for a particular standard. Like wait staff in a restaurant, many work on a very modest hourly wage, and tips comprise a large portion of their salary.

Groomers remember clients that tip. While they are professionals who

always do their best, they will pay extra attention to the unique needs of your pet if you show your appreciation.

How much to tip depends on your budget and how you feel about the results. Any tip is appreciated, but a good benchmark is between 15% 20%. If you think that your groomer did an exceptional job, or you know your dog's behavior is a bit of a challenge, give a bit more, especially if you're a regular customer.

During this holiday season, they will also appreciate a little extra in addition to their tip. Perhaps something they can enjoy post-holiday grooming season, like a spa visit, a gift card for dinner out, or maybe a Dunkin' or Starbucks gift card for a warm beverage on the way into work this winter.

nviting visitors to your home can be a fun time for everyone, including your pup. But what if your company doesn't like dogs? Should you cancel the visit or send your pet away?

Luckily, you don't have to resort to either. Whether your guests have pet allergies, fear of dogs, or a general dislike toward animals, there's plenty you can do to prepare your home, pet, and company for a successful visit.

These six ideas can help.

Fix Your Dog's Bad Habits Before your company comes to visit, consider enrolling your dog in an obedience refresher course or a class that's tailored to correcting specific bad habits your pet exhibits, like biting or jumping. Preparing your dog to be on his best behavior will make your guests more tolerant and comfortable, which will make their stay much more pleasant for each of you.

Freshen Up Making sure your home is clean and free of pet hair, and dander can help put guests with allergies or an aversion to dog smells at ease. Shampoo the carpets, clean the furniture and dog bedding, and sanitize areas of the house where your pet spends the most time. Freshen up your pet, too, by giving him a thorough bathing and grooming before the company arrives.

Enlist Pet Sitters Know a pet sitter or friend who's willing to watch the dog when company visits? Schedule the help in advance. Arranging for your dog to stay busy and occupied while you're entertaining will take the pressure off you to try to make both your guests and pet happy. You'll also give your dog the opportunity to expend energy, so he'll be tired and tame when home with the guests.

Prepare Separate Quarters Overnight visitors who don't like dogs should have sleeping quarters

away from your pet. In fact, try to keep the dog confined to a different part of the house as often as possible.

If your dog is crate trained, you can move the crate to another level of the home or a separate wing or room.

Dog gates are also helpful for separating your pet safely and comfortably.

Give Your Company a Heads Up Be sure your company knows you have a dog before the visit so they can come prepared, especially if they need allergy meds. At the same time, give them confidence you'll make every effort to ensure their comfort. The worst thing you can do when hosting guests is neglect to tell them you have a dog. People who don't like dogs won't appreciate that kind of surprise.

Respect Both Parties Keep in mind there are valid reasons why people don't like dogs.

Besides suffering pet allergies, they could have had a bad experience with a dog, such as an attack or incessant barking. Whatever the reason for your company's displeasure, show respect for their feelings. But have compassion for your pet too. Remember, your home is first and foremost, his living space.

Just because your company doesn't like dogs doesn't mean they can't enjoy a visit to your dog-occupied dwelling. Take the time to prepare for dog-leery guests and make everyone feel welcome and at home during the stay.

Updates Covid 19, Grain-Free diets, CBD Local Oil Spill Covid 19

e have not seen much change since May. It is still very rare for dogs and cats to contract the disease. Those that have fallen ill have contracted it from someone in the house that has Covid 19. Pets can be asymptomatic or have a mild illness, and those that have had it have recovered. It has not been shown to transmit to people from fur or skin.

We recommend social distancing for pets as much as people to help protect from contracting the disease.

Grain-Free Diets In July 2018, the FDA released reports that there are a rise in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) cases in dogs. It is typically seen in giant 20

breed dogs genetically predisposed to it like Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, Irish Wolf Hounds, and Great Danes.

English Cocker Spaniels are one of the small-medium breed dogs predisposed to it. They are now finding it in Golden Retrievers, Mix Breed Dogs, Labrador Retrievers, Pit Bulls, Bull Dogs, Poodles, and several other breeds. The FDA states that a common link amongst the canine cases is diet. Kibbles which “list potatoes or multiple legumes such as peas, lentils, other “pulses” (seeds of legumes), and their protein, starch, and fiber derivatives early in the ingredient list, indicating that they are main ingredients. “High levels of legumes or potatoes appear to be more common in diets labeled as “grain-free,” but some grain diets have also been on the list.

An update in 2019 says that the case numbers have continued to rise, and between January 1, 2014, and April 30, 2019, 524 cases were reported. (1) More recently, on September 29, 2020, case numbers have risen to 1100 in total. The cause and relationship to these diets is still unclear; however, studies have shown that when the diet is changed from grain-free to grain included, there is an improvement in heart disease overall; some dogs have even fully recovered. (2)

CBD CBD is still in an infancy stage in veterinary medicine due to a lack of research. This is because laws at the time made having the product illegal, and legal issues with specific sources for CBD to this day are preventing studies. Anecdotal reports have been the basis up to this time for people wanting to use it. Multiple studies have come out, and some positive results have been seen with CBD. Hemp-based products are legal without the THC, while marijuana-based CBD is still a class one drug, and studies are harder to get approved due to legality.

One study compared different preparations of CBD to determine blood levels in dogs. It was determined that infused oil, given orally, had the fastest absorption rate and the highest blood level. To a lesser degree, microencapsulated CBD had a slower absorption rate and lower overall blood levels. The transdermal CBD cream had the slowest absorption and barely reached a 10% blood level. This was a limited study, and

more vehicles for transdermal creams should be tested, but based on this information, an oral infused oil will give you the best chance for response.

(3) Osteoarthritis (OA) affects roughly 20% of all dogs. One study in cats shows 90% have radiographical changes of OA. They gave CBD orally to dogs diagnosed with OA at 2mg/kg and then repeated after a washout period at 8mg/kg orally and non-CBD oil to a placebo group. Significant improvement in activity and decreased pain was noted in owner and veterinary based scoring in the CBD group. The 2mg/kg showed to be effective. (4) Another study used CBD in conjunction with anti-epileptic medication for dogs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and having seizures.

The dogs were given CBD infused oil at 2.5mg/kg, and the placebo group was given non infused oil. Two dogs in the CBD group had to be taken off due to the development of ataxia (stumbling, uncoordinated, drunk like). The CBD group saw a more significant reduction in seizure activity overall (median change, 33%) than the placebo group. The reduction in seizure activity did correlate to blood levels of CBD. The study did have a small sample size, and blood did show one elevation in Alkp (liver value) in the CBD group only. No other clinical side effects were noted. (5) CBD studies are showing promise for some use in Veterinary medicine.

A little bit about release cues and proofing.

One of the things I teach in O class but sometimes forget about

during in-home training is a release cue. A release cue lets your dog know that they finished with something, and they can carry on with whatever else they wanted to do, even if it’s staying in that down position to nap. I first teach this to puppies when they are learning “sit” since it’s easy to get them up from a seated position. Here’s how: Release Cue (“ok”) Why: It indicates to the dog that a specific behavior/position is complete, and they are released to get treats, attention, freedom, etc. as a reward. * Hint: many people use “ok,” but you may choose to utilize a less common word to reduce the chances of confusion (“break,” “all done,”)

What: —pocket/pouch full of treats —hungry dog —quiet, comfortable area —patience How: 1. Bait hand with treats (be sure not to make a big show of this, as we do not want the dog to work only when they know there is food), or have a toy your dog likes within reach.

2. Bring your dog into a sit or down and have them wait a moment.

3. Say your choice of release cue (“ok”, “all done”, “break,” etc.), followed by encouraging gestureswaving hands, arms, jumping up and down a couple of times. Reward with petting, praise, a short run around the room together, a treat, whatever your dog will like. I tend to lean more toward a non-treat reward here since the release point is to “be done,” not necessarily to come to me. If you give a treat, toss it on the floor.

Tips: —An excellent opportunity to teach this cue is when right before your dog goes outside. Have him/her sit at the back door; once they sit well for a moment (you can increase this moment over time), give your cue and let the dog out (to the fenced-in yard or on a leash in a non-fenced area).

—One of the most common uses for this cue is to release our dogs from waiting to get their food. You can ask your dog to sit/stay as you place the dish down, then release the dog to go to their food. This isn’t a “dominance” thing, by the way, just a good way to keep your dog calm before a meal.

—Another great place to practice is on the elevator if you live in an apartment building. Have your dog sit while waiting for the elevator, release with your cue to get on the elevator.

While on the elevator, have your dog sit again, then when you get to the correct floor, wait until your dog is sitting calmly, give the cue and walk off the elevator together.

More: Build up to having your dog wait for a release for more enticing thingsbreakfast, dinner, playtime off-leash, playtime with another doggie friend (with everyone’s permission, of course!), anything he/she loves!

Ok, so go practice. Yup. Right now.

Were all done? Your dog can do it?

He will wait at the door until released and will hold a stay until released and will wait for meals? Awesome.

Now, we get to the challenging part; for your dog, at least. Up to this point, your dog understands that he needs to hold a given position until you talk again. I hate to break it to you, but it’s not just the release word that your dog knows. He has learned the context of the situation. You ask him to stay, you place a dish of food on the floor, walk away, out of the room, drop a toy, etc., but he knows that as soon as you open your mouth, he’s done. We need to now proof the release cue and toss in fake words to make sure he is paying attention.

Dogs don’t quite speak the same language as us, but they can understand differences in inflection and syllables, which is why they can have pretty sizable vocabularies of human words.

Think about it; if you speak German, your dog will learn the German word for “sit”; if you speak Mandarin, he learns the Mandarin word for “sit.”

It’s not that dogs have a universal translator on board; they are really good at putting together the specifics of a situation and what has and has not worked in the past. Sorry, I’ll stop with the nerdy stuff, on to the fun part.

Now, go ahead and put your dog in the sit or down or stand or stay position and say any word but your release word. Try something fun like pineapple. If your dog gets up, you say “nope” and ask them to return to their previous position. Again, say a non-release word. If your dog does not get up, go ahead and give the real release cue and make a big deal of how well he did. If he hesitates to Continue on pg. 39 Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2020

A Nose for Adventure with Seal, Bogey & Huckleberry

As we are still dealing with Covid19, it has made it a little challenging to find things to do. But a fun thing to do is to go camping.

There are many campgrounds on the Eastern Shore to go to, but I am lucky enough to get to spend most of my weekends from March through November at Tall Pines Harbor Campground in Temperanceville, VA. They have fun events almost every weekend, and some even include stuff for us pups, and the snack bar has some yummy food. We can run on their beach or take a stroll around and sniff all the good smells and meet new pup friends. So if you are looking for something fun to do outdoors 28

Fish Tales, located at 22nd and the bay, is one of our go-to spots during the summer months. The restaurant offers a laid back atmosphere with sand at your feet and views of the boats docked at Bahia Marina. Pups aren't allowed in the main dining area, but that's totally okay with us!

We pawfer to be where the action is – hanging out on the docks at the water's edge! While we sit on the dock of the bay, we get to see lots of fish, crabs, and greet the patrons arriving by boat. We love to await the arrival of the guests from the Judith M's sunset cruise. The hoomans are always extra happy (pawsibly due to the booze cruise), but we aren't judging because they give us lots of pets!

always a good time. Like many other places on the bay, the sunsets are always PAWSOME! While our pawrents snack on some of their favorites like conch fritters and buffalo scallops, they make sure we don't go hungry and order us a grilled chicken breast (or two!) Late nights at Fish Tales allow for an extra special tweat!

The docks are illuminated by neon green lights that attract the sea locals.

We have so much fun watching the crabs and fish swim around. Mom and dad usually have to hold onto us a little bit tighter, so we don't end up swimming with the fishes!

Q: My dog is well trained; I have been training him myself since I got him. He is a year and a half now and is good with sit, down, paw, come, heel; he even plays fetch and drops the ball when I ask. He has always struggled with the stay, though. I ask him to stay, and as I step away, I have to keep telling him to stay because I can see it in his eyes that he wants to get up, so I keep reminding him. What else can I do to teach him this one?

him! As far as the struggle you are having with the stay, it’s really, really common. We, humans, tend to repeat ourselves until what we want happens. This means that for our dogs, we have this habit of asking them to stay repeatedly until we are ready for them to get up.

Man, that sounds exhausting. No wonder you want to get a better ‘stay’ out of him! The good news is that it’s really, very simple. All you have to do is stop repeating the cue. When you ask your dog to stay, say it once.

That’s it. If you see that he’s going to get up, let him. Then, you say “nope,” “no,” “oops,” or make a buzzer sound “eh-eh,” and walk him back to the spot he was in initially for the stay, and ask for that stay again. When we repeat the cue over and over and over, we are only teaching our dog to stay for the increment of time between us saying “stay,” which is generally just a 5-10 second period. They are waiting for us to remind them because we always do. Our dogs are also staying engaged with us during this time, waiting for the next “stay.”

Instead, it should be a simple “stay,”

which means “you hang here until I tell you otherwise.” Think about it- if you want to get out of sight or in another part of the house, you can’t keep reminding your dog to do it. You have to give him a chance to fail, just a little bit. By failing, your dog has to reset and has to wait longer for their reward. It also helps to break down the stay to a short duration and build on that. I start with at stay where I only take a step away at first, and once I can do that 2-3 times well, I add another step, and so on. This way, we are building the dog’s tolerance for staying as we move away, but we don’t need to be reminding him the whole time.

Q: We will be traveling to see family for the holidays, but with COVID, the dogs have not all been together for almost a year now. What is the best way to go about re-introducing them?

A: I can’t believe it’s almost time for the holidays, but it’s great that you are planning ahead! The good news is that if the dogs have been around each other before and have not had issues, they will more than likely be fine now, too. They will probably be excited (as I am sure all the people will be), so there may be extra jumping and excited play at first. The biggest concern with excited dogs is the risk of them getting too excited and for play to turn to aggression.

Again, if they have been ok in the past, this is unlikely. Just know that excitement can turn to aggression if it goes on for too long. It’s the way the 34

brain works in dogs and humans as well- the higher the level of arousal, the more potential there is for it to slip in the aggression and for bad decisions.

My favorite way to introduce or even re-introduce dogs is to let them do some mutual activity, like leash walking. This only works if nobody is leash reactive, though. If there is a leash reactivity issue, and the dogs have been good with one another in the past, walking around in a yard may be the best start.

If you can plan your arrival so that you can hop out of the car and walk the dogs right away and have the other dogs out on that walk as well, that would be perfect. Otherwise, do a walk with them as soon as you can.

On walks, I like for the odds to favor the bipeds- so have at least one person per dog and one person walking just one dog at a time. On

the walk, they can sniff each other briefly, sniff where other animals have peed/pooped, and they can move away from one another at their leisure.

On the walk, you want to watch out for anyone giving the “stink eye” or doing a “hard stare.” The “stink eye” is just the same as in people- one individual looking at another in a rude manner. This can be seen when the rambunctious lap puppy jumps close to the grumpy older dog, typically. The “hard stare” is much more serious and is more of an “I’d happily start a fight and finish it” kind of look. If you see that, try to calmly and casually walk the dogs away from one another and plan for them to stay separated when not supervised directly. This does not necessarily mean there will be a fight, but a hard stare is a definite warning, and if it is ignored, things will escalate. You can also be on the lookout for any dog who is cowering, tucking their tail, or looking out the corner of their eye at another dog. This may indicate a general anxiety, or it may indicate someone who is being bullied.

If the walk goes well and you don’t see any hard stares or scared pups, go ahead and let them wander the house as usual. If you aren’t sure, baby gates make great dividers between rooms, even if they cause people to use their hip flexors more than usual.

With gates, dogs can interact as they want, but walk away when they want as well. This helps to facilitate healthy relationships.

If you have specific concerns or if any of the dogs have had issues in the past, I recommend contacting a certified trainer who will not use

force or fear-based methods, as that will often make it worse, even if it’s in the long run.

Q: We just got a new puppy, and we want to get her used to nail trims as soon as possible. How early can we start? What should we do? Our last dog hated his nails trimmed, and it was awful every time.

A: First, congratulations on your new puppy! It may vary depending on each dog, but it’s generally not too early for a nail trim once you have a puppy from a breeder, rescue, or shelter. Most pups go to their new homes around eight weeks, and if they haven’t had a nail trim at that point, they will need one! If you aren’t sure or are nervous about nail trims- contact your fear-free veterinarian or groomer- they should know how to do nail trims without stress, which is imperative to a puppy having a long life of peaceful nail trims.

feet, pads, and nails. Just touching their feet may be new or exciting. You can always add in treats as a reward and a small distraction as you do this.

Remember that when using treats as a way of desensitizing and counter-conditioning, you want treats to be the predictor of good and that the treating should happen at least as long as the handling/nail trimming. If we start with the trimmer and then treat, the dog may already be over the threshold, and she won’t want the treat when that happens.

—I usually have the dog laying down on their side, but they can be in the sphinx-style down (back legs folded under her and front legs out straight in front), but the latter makes your job harder.

—Next, you bring out the nail trimmers (my personal preference is the ones that resemble a pair of pliers, the non-guillotine style) and offer treats as the nail trimmers are insight.

Again, we are building a good association with the trimmers. As long as your pup is in good spiritsnot hiding, shying away, or trying to eat you or the trimmers, you can go ahead with the next step, which is touching the nail with the closed, locked trimmer, pairing a treat with it.

—Next, you hold the nail trimmer away from the dog but have it open and unlocked and go ahead and open/ close it a few times. Let your pup watch, treating along the way a few times. This way, your dog gets to see what it does and hear any sound the tool may make (remember, just 36

because you can’t hear anything doesn’t mean your dog won’t).

—Next, you can reach over and feed treats with one hand (or have an assistant do this) as you trim just a small amount off the tip of a nail. Stop for a moment, stoping the treats as you stop. Repeat for another toenail or all the nails if your pup is not showing signs of stress and is happily taking treats. For this first time, don’t worry about taking a lot off the nails; just take a little bit off. (signs of stress would be your dog looking away, getting up, running away, pulling her foot away, grabbing you or the nail trimmer, snarling, growling, snapping.)

—After a successful nail trim, you can take a break and do more the next day or later in the week. This way, it’s something that happens regularly and isn’t stressful.

There is no need for a dog to be held down by three people for a nail trim when we can start with some gradual desensitization, especially with a young puppy.

release serotonin and dopamine, brain chemicals known for their calming effects. Just 20 minutes of bonding can bring big relief, too. Before or after work, take a walk together, play a game of fetch, or try doga, yoga with your dog, which increases mental clarity and relieves body aches and pains suffered on the job. Too tired to exercise? Simple cuddling or massaging your pet works as well and benefits both the giver and receiver.

Let Your Dog's Needs Divert Your Attention Like you, pets have needs. At a minimum, they have to be fed and let out to do their business. They need fresh water too, along with their teeth brushed, their nails clipped, and maybe a dosing of any daily medications and supplements. All these tasks put your focus on your pet and away from

According to studies, dogs improve work relationships by helping people bond through increased interaction and conversation related to the dog.

Workers tend to experience greater work satisfaction, concentration,

Bone Appetite Coconut Snowflakes Oatmeal Applesauce Cookies Ingredients 2 cups whole wheat flour 2 cups rolled oat flour 2 eggs 2 Tbs melted coconut oil 1 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 Tbsp real vanilla extract Instructions Preheat oven to 350º Combine all ingredients with a mixer.

Add flour as necessary until dough is no longer sticky and is ready to roll out.

Cut with festive cutters or simply use the rim of a glass. Keep the dough covered to prevent drying between batches.

This dough refrigerates up to a week and freezes for three months.

Your dog will love this guest worthy holiday cookie! Coconut is bursting with antioxidants and said to make the coat shine. Who doesn’t love a healthy cookie that looks stunning during the holidays?

Ingredients 1 cup unsweetened dried shredded coconut 1/2 cup coconut oil (in the solid-state) 1 cup coconut flour 1 cup oat flour (If you have difficulty finding “oat flour” in the grocery store, you can whip up your own by putting pressed oats in your blender for a few minutes.)

1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg Instructions Preheat oven to 350º For the egg wash -1 egg whisked Cream the coconut oil, about 2 minutes, with a mixer.

Add coconut and oat flours, and baking powder. Continue to mix on low.

Add the egg and vanilla and mix until the dough just begins to take a ball shape.

Add 1/2 of the shredded coconut to the mixture and hand mix into the dough ball.

Roll out dough to about ¼” thickness and cut into shapes.

Egg wash each rolled cookie and top with remaining shredded coconut.

Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until edges begin to brown.

(Note: never shared unbaked cookie dough that contains baking powder with your dog. It can cause serious stomach issues. Everyone should eat only baked cookies!)

Local Oil Spill (Delmarva) An oil spill is washing up on our beaches in early November 2020 and is causing some to be closed. Reportedly the oil is Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO).

HFOs tend to be non-toxic but are a gastrointestinal irritant leading to salivation, diarrhea, and vomiting. This can also be breathed in when swallowing or swimming in contaminated water. When breathed in or aspirated secondary to vomiting, it can coat the

lungs and create severe pneumonia that can be life-threatening.

If you are on the beach, be leery at this time of letting your dog go into the water or near the edge where oil balls and coated materials may wash up.
