It is important to create and nurture an atmosphere of fun, which encourages community engagement. Sun City Grand has accomplished this effectively through the many different types of events offered during the year. We have provided many events that align with the culture of the community and the interests of our residents.

We have offered a myriad of educational, music, entertainment, social, fitness and golf events. Additionally, our drama, dance, and music clubs, to name a few, provide quality entertainment from our own talented residents.

The numerous events at Sun City Grand create a positive experience within our community, which leads to a powerful word of mouth effect.

We have heard that “Sun City Grand is like a cruise ship on dry land.” Statements like this easily spread, and create a very favorable image that positively affects our community. Our residents become our own advertising engine, spreading the word to neighboring communities, family and friends.

When successful, our community becomes known for its lifestyle and is recognized as “the place to be.” This recognition can become true differentiators when prospective buyers are evaluating where to live.

Proper reserve funding, conservative investment policies, sound yearly budgeting created through community involvement coupled with monthly oversight by the Finance Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors creates a stable financial environment. A healthy balance sheet provides

confidence in the current and long-term financial stability of the community and is attractive to new buyers.

We are currently researching options to improve our website to improve visual impact, usability and better represent the activities and brand of Sun City Grand.

OVERSEEDING WHY ARE YOU CHANGING OUT THE GRASS WHEN THE COURSES LOOK SO GOOD? conditions for our golfers.

It is hard to believe that the fall overseeding practice is here. “What does this mean and why do we do it?” are often questions that staff gets asked.

The base grass on all 4 of the golf courses here at Sun City Grand is bermuda.

Bermuda grass thrives in the hotter more humid months but not as well in the cooler months. Because of this, the courses put down over 225,000 pounds of grass seed. This brings the darker green color/aesthetics back while the bermuda grass becomes dormant and golden brown in color.

Staff will continue to use straight bluegrass on the greens. This will allow staff to be more aggressive with our mowing heights after overseeding and allow for better rolling greens sooner.

Staff will continue to alter our overseeding closure dates (if need be) to allow a better chance to have better weather during the overseeding process which will in turn give better playing 14

This year staff is planning on having only 3 days where golf will not be available. In the previous years, we have had up to 10 days of no golf. The schedule is posted on www.grandinfo. com under the Grand Golf/Calendars tab. The schedule is subject to change based on the current weather forecasts.

Staff is working on having some events on the range while all of the courses are closed. More information will be posted in the golf shops and email blasted for those that are on the golf email blast.

As in years past, the golf courses will be cart path only for about 3 weeks after they open back up from overseeding.

The purpose for this is to allow the young rye grass to get an opportunity to become more rigorous to be able to handle the upcoming cart traffic, play and divots.

a test with seed in the mixture and without seed. We made some divots similar in length, width and depth. We applied both of the mixtures to the divots. We found that the divots both filled in within the same time frame.

The seed needs to maintain moisture in order for it to germinate and since it does not get constant water, it takes longer. We found that the healthy rye grass tillers out just as fast and fills in the divots. Also, by not using seed in the mixture kept rye grass from germinating in the non-overseeded areas.

Each show will have half of the venue on hold. Half will accommodate the online patrons and the other half is for those who prefer to come into the Activities Office to purchase their tickets.

Now there is a question you don’t hear often. And, to answer you will need to have some tools to evaluate your Chi (Qi). Chi Gong can show you how to evaluate, increase, direct, and heal with your Chi (Qi). This is now becoming an important and powerful tool in western medicine. It is not a martial art but rather a health giving program for any age or physical ability.

Chi Gong is a 5,000 year old Chinese modality used by billions of people today to give an understanding of and use the power of their bio-magnetic energy. You were born with it. You have it today. Are you using it to keep yourself healthy, protect yourself from illness, or relieve your pain?

Becoming more in tune with your body, and learning techniques to address the problems which arise from being human, is the focus of Chi Gong. The movements of Chi Gong are deceivingly simple, but powerful enough to make great changes in your health. You can have fun while enjoying your new found health and stamina.

Firstly, understanding the importance of the breath and how to use it to accomplish huge changes in overall health of your body, will make changes in the way you look at exercise. No

matter how hard you exert yourself to increase your strength and improve your heart muscle, your overall health still depends on the functions of your organs, lymphatic system, bone strength, balance, and the ability of your body to use your bio- magnetic energy to function as the well-oiled machine for which we all strive. Learning the techniques of the breath and using your Chi to enhance and protect your body is powerful. You have to breathe all day, every day. How about you use your breath to make a difference?

Secondly, your mind is a powerful tool when directing Chi throughout your body to reduce pain, slow your heart rate, reduce inflammation, improve your immune system, and regulate body temperature. It is not difficult.

Your mind already knows how. You just have to understand how to let it do its job. Chi Gong breathing is the first breath you took at birth. Your breathing now is usually controlled by what your mind perceives is best in any particular circumstance. Natural Chi Gong breathing is instantly recognized

by your body and mind and is put to work improving your health. Jean Charlton, a Chi Gong student says “Qigong breathing and body movements help to relax my body and mind, which has reduced the stress in my everyday life....information about different methods to care for my mind and body is interesting, thought provoking, and assists me in living a healthy life style.”

When you consistently eat a poor diet rich in sugary, starchy foods, your body is systematically being affected by inflammation. This increases the risk of degenerative disease, chronic pain, joint pain, fatigue, and damage to blood vessels. The good news is there’s plenty that can be done to control inflammation. Remember we all have the same disease. No matter it’s label – it’s all rooted in inflammation.

Balance, blood circulation in the extremities including diabetic nerve pain, digestive functions, and stress are also subjects addressed by the techniques of Chi Gong. Learning to balance your body is a life-saving gift Chi Gong gives to you, and it is so easy. You just have to understand that when repeating the movement set you build muscle memory and it records in the brain for future application. The Tempe Festival of the Arts consistently ranks among the Top 100 Classic & Contemporary Craft Shows in the nation by Sunshine Artist magazine and has received the prestigious Pinnacle Award from the International Festival and Events Association. The spring and fall events each attract nearly 225,000 visitors to the Downtown Tempe over the course of a 3-day weekend.

Quality independent artists are fundamental to the success of the event.

Flavour was created by paring the talents of keyboard engineer and composer Lawrence Ross, with the big sound and delightful tones of saxophonist Bryne Donaldson. Formed in 2010 in Phoenix, AZ, the idea was a small footprint band with a big sound. The purpose: to satisfy a niche in the market for venues that had no stage for a full band, but yet still wanted live music.

The combination of Bryne’s old school, gospel influences and Lawrence’s new age sounds is a unique and exciting blend. The group started playing cover tunes in upscale restaurants, resorts and country clubs in the Phoenix area. The popularity of the group increased and they established a following.

Over the years Flavour developed their own sound and began to put their “Flavour” on the music they played. They started to work on original tunes and mixed them in their set list of cover tunes. The crowds loved the originals, which inspired putting out an EP. When the team from worldwide Internet Radio station Smoothjazz.com heard the infectious tune “Savory” from the EP, they contacted Flavour to promote the group and the song. The marketing campaign started midApril 2015. Now Flavour’s music is being played on 1000’s of radio stations all around the world and getting rave reviews.

Meet Our New Executive Director of The Colonnade D A N

Dan Liguori’s new office is wellkept, a reflection of his penchant for orderliness. But the neatness also stems from the fact that the new executive director of The Colonnade, a Sun Health Life Care community, enjoys getting out from behind his desk. You’re likely to find him walking the campus, introducing himself to residents (his goal is to meet all 300-plus residents in the coming months), listening to concerns they may have and assuring them he’s here for them.

He uses the same approach with employees. “I appreciate our staff and know that all of them play a very important role in serving our residents.

I’m willing to do anything to help them succeed.”

The open, direct approach has won him numerous fans.

“Dan’s dedication to the residents, staff and the organization are clearly visible through his work ethic, commitment to excellence and his calm, practical approach to finding solutions,” says Sharon Grambow, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Sun Health Senior Living.

Another way Dan is getting to know his community is by playing table tennis at least once a week with several residents.

It’s not a low-key type of ping pong, but a much more competitive level of play where the players hit and return the ball with real authority. In addition to the eye-hand coordination, players must be fast on their feet.

“There are some very good players here,” Dan says, adding that he’s been handily beaten by higher-level players on more than one occasion.

His table tennis skills may need improvement, but his business skill set is a stellar one.

Lured by warmer weather and job prospects, he relocated to Arizona in 2005 and shortly after, was hired by La Loma Village, a Sun Health Life Care community, in Litchfield Park, as its director of financial services.

Dan, who hails from Niles, Ohio, earned his accounting degree from Youngstown State University in Ohio and spent the first 20 years of his career working in corporate accounting in his

He managed the community’s finances for eight years. His time there included a stint in 2011 as the interim executive director. Then in 2015, Dan was promoted to assistant controller for Sun Health Senior Living which gave him responsibility for many of the accounting functions over all three communities.

Looking back, Dan sees how these work experiences helped lay the groundwork for becoming an executive director.

When the previous executive director left in July, Dan offered to fill in as interim director until a successor was found, and Sun Health leaders accepted his offer. He had no intention of applying for the job himself, but during the interim, several residents and staff members urged him to throw his hat into the ring. After much thought, he decided to apply.

“His accounting expertise coupled with his leadership abilities made Dan a natural choice for this job,” Sharon said.

“I consider myself very lucky,” Dan says of his new job. He’s been immersed in the day-to-day operations as well as involved in planning for future growth on the campus. But he’s still determined to carve out time to play table tennis with residents.

“It’s a great way to connect with them, win or lose.”

The opposite page lists the many Town Hall Meetings scheduled for Members to learn about the proposed changes to our Association’s CC&Rs and Bylaws. At each Town Hall, the Consent Committee will provide an overview of changes being proposed and answer questions from those attending. Please plan to attend one of the early meetings so you may be informed and be able to consent in a convenient time so we may all move forward.

Why are these changes being proposed?

A few reasons are: n Establish

the homeowners of Sun City Grand as the sole proprietors of the Association, eliminating Del Webb (Declarant) in our CC&Rs an Bylaws.

n Revise

major provisions to support homeowners' self-governance.

n Insure

the documents are up-to-date in compliance with Arizona law.

n Eliminate

constraints on the Neighborhood Rep Program to enable greater flexibility and growth.

n Transfer

authority over common areas from the Architectural Review Committee to the Board of Directors.

n Allow

the Board of Directors to determine the amount of the CARE fee based on future needs of the community.

n Board

of Directors must be Members or qualified occupants.

n The

SCG Strategic Plan must be maintained and reviewed annually.

The first Town Hall is scheduled for Monday afternoon, October 23rd in the Aqua Fria room at Cimarron. This is the same date that you may consent to the changes.

There are several ways to do so.

Those who are registered to vote online will be notified of the initiation of the consent process via email from Vote Now on Monday, the 23rd.

All other Members will be mailed consent forms which should arrive during the week of October 23rd. These mailings will contain a preaddressed and postage-paid return envelope making it very easy for all to consent at their earliest convenience.

The other method of consenting is to do so when visiting a booth (or table) manned by the Consent Committee at any of the Town Hall meetings or at various special events during the next few months. Committee members will have consent forms available for Members to sign as long as the Member has their activity card available to confirm identity.

No matter how you choose to consent, please do so as soon as possible. While there may be one or even two items you may not agree with, the proposed changes will allow all of us to be better served in the years ahead. Thank you on behalf of the Consent Committee.

In the coming months our community will be voting during two important events: n The approval of our modified governing documents (CC&R, By-Laws). n The election of residents to the Board of Directors.

He works with a modest camera and uses robust post processing and creative mounting to enhance his photos.

CASTLE DOME GHOST TOWN Castle Dome, Arizona is located on the west side of the state of Arizona, between Quartzsite to the north, and Yuma to the south. We’ll stop in Quartzsite for lunch on your own. Castle Dome is home to the longest working mine in Arizona, operating from 1862 to 1979. At its peak, Castle Dome had over 3,000 residents. Spanish conquistadors were the first to discover silver in this area in the 1600’s, but it wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that Americans began to mine rich silver and lead ore deposits in Castle Dome. More than nine million pounds of lead ore were extracted here during both world wars, to meet the demand for bullets. The mines closed for good in 1979. We’ll tour 50 buildings, including a hotel, doctor’s office, church with functional bell tower, blacksmith shop, assay office, sheriff’s office, jail, and several saloons.

Most of the artifacts on display were pulled from mine shafts. This is a fabulous tour! *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels.

VETERANS DAY—A TRIBUTE TO OUR SCG VETERANS Our SCG Veterans will ride as part of the City of Surprise Veterans Day Parade on trollies. Please sign up for your spot at the Activities Desk no later than Monday, November 6th, as space is limited. For all SCG Veterans, transportation will be provided to and from the City of Surprise Veterans Day Parade. Parade begins at 9:30am. Please arrive at the Palm Center for pickup at 7:30am. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for our SCG Veterans who have signed up for this celebration.

Upon return to SCG, we will host a Patriotic Concert beginning at 1:15pm, as a tribute, salute and remembrance to their service. This is a special performance dedicated to our Sun City Grand Veterans.

WINTERHAVEN FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS This will be the 68th year for the Winterhaven Festival of Lights, one of the most amazing displays of Christmas lights in the United States. This Tucson holiday tradition is visited by thousands of people from all over Arizona. More importantly, the Festival of lights raises thousands of dollars and tons of food for the Community Food Bank in Tucson. During the holiday season Winterhaven homes are aglow with LED lights, elaborate decorations and holiday music. This year we’ve reserved cozy seats on a hay wagon drawn by propane powered jeeps, and as always, we’ll stop for dinner on your own, before heading to the festival, with the restaurant TBD. My fellow neighbors, we are a month away from the November 7 General Obligation Bond Election. As you may recall since August, I have utilized my monthly article to go over each of the three questions voters will be asked to decide. We began with the $34 million Public Safety Question that would fund six projects to address public safety needs. In September, we looked at the three road safety projects listed under the $15.5 million Traffic Congestion Mitigation Question, and this month we’ll explore the $10 million Pavement Preservation Question. expensive road reconstruction projects citywide, allowing the annual $4.5 million pavement preservation budget to pay for lower-cost street maintenance projects, such as crackseal and micro-surfacing treatments which can extend a street’s service use by 7–10 years.

Project need: The city has more than 1,400 paved street-lane miles.

The estimated full replacement value is approximately $773 million. The 2015 independent assessment of city streets revealed the network was showing deterioration over time.

Council increased the annual pavement preservation program budget from $1.8 million to $4.5 million in FYs 20162018. While, the budget currently can provide for lower-cost maintenance treatments, it is not sufficient to fund major pavement restructuring of Bell Road, for example, from east of the bridge to Parkview. The National Center for Pavement Preservation shows that spending a dollar on maintenance pavement preservation can eliminate or delay spending $6 to $14 on future major reconstruction costs.

Retiring an old computer Dear Cappie, I am about ready to retire my desktop computer and plan on buying a new laptop to go along with my tablet. I’d like to either donate my old computer or just dispose of it. Any suggestions on what I need to do before I do either of these things?

Sincerely, Rick Dear Rick, I’m assuming you have already purchased your new laptop. (If not, check out the upcoming column on what to look for when buying a new laptop). Many of the components of computers are toxic and hurt the environment, so Cappie strongly suggests that you do not just throw your old PC in the trash. The City of Surprise offers Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events several times throughout the year to help protect the environment by properly disposing of items like computers, smartphones, and tablets. There are also several agencies and businesses in the West Valley that recycle old computers.

Before you dispose of or give away your old computer, there are several things you should do: n Transfer & Backup Files. Your first order of business is to transfer the files from your old PC to the new laptop and back up your files to either an external hard drive or to a cloud storage service or both (some cloud storage sites: Dropbox, Box.com, pCloud, Google Drive, One Drive, ICloud).

Delete & Overwrite Files. Wipe out all your personal information. Just deleting your files is not enough. Anyone who has contact with your old computer can easily use one of many data recovery programs to retrieve the old files you deleted. If you have banking or income tax files or other sensitive information on your computer, it is especially important that you use a program like File Shredder, Eraser, Wipe File, etc.

These programs can remove files from your hard drive so they could not be recovered. To shred files permanently from your system these programs rewrite the files with random series of binary data multiple times. This process is often called shredding. In this process, the actual content of the file has been overwritten and the possibilities to recover that shredded file are next to none. n Delete your browsing history. If you use the Edge browser, select Hub (the 3 horizonal lines in the upper righthand corner of the screen) > History > Select Clear all history. If you use Cortana and want to clear your browsing history stored in the cloud, select Change what Microsoft Edge knows about me in the cloud, then select Clear browsing history. For Internet Explorer, click on the cog wheel in the upper right corner to open the browser menu, then Safety option > Delete Browsing History.

Make sure all of the check boxes are selected so everything gets removed.

Some programs, such as Adobe Elements, Lightroom, iTunes, Microsoft Office 365, etc. only allow you to install software on a limited number of computers or allow a limited number of computers to access your files. So be sure to deauthorize/ deactivate your old computer with your accounts before uninstalling those programs. Open the program, find the Account Settings or Help Settings n

for specific programs and then check deactivate or deauthorize. n Uninstall your programs Some programs, such as Turbo Tax, Microsoft Office, etc. contain personal information such as your name, address, and other personal information so uninstall any financial programs before disposing of your computer. n Wipe your hard drive For PCs, once you’ve gone through and removed the data you know is there, perform a factory reset to ensure you’ve removed all your personal files and software programs. You can also use additional programs like Eraser to further clean your hard drive.

The other option is to remove your hard drive and physically destroy/damage it by drilling holes in it and beating it with a hammer until it is destroyed. If your product is too old or too broken to donate, you should recycle it. Be advised that many recyclers simply export your old PCs, dumping them on developing nations where they end up in landfills.

Your best option is to use a recycler who is part of the “e-Steward” network; they don’t export to developing nations, and they follow other high standards for disposing of electronics. Many also will reuse and refurbish equipment. Staples and Best Buy work with www.e-Stewards. org to promote responsible electronics reuse and recycling best practices worldwide.
