What does an Active Adult Community mean to you? I I attended the LongRange Planning (LRP) Committee last month where they asked the following question to the audience and other committee members, “What does, an active adult community mean to you?” The responses ranged from one end of the spectrum to the other. You have residents that feel that we need to build what the current residents want, to we need to build for the future to be able to attract new residents. One resident said, “The Grand has it all, it has everything you could ever want. The Grand are the leaders in active adult communities.” Others thought that The Grand needs to cater to the younger group that is moving in with more evening events. This is what the LRP is tasked with, trying to meet the needs of most of our residents with the understanding that it won’t be what everyone wants.

appreciate the interaction and the input that this question received. We understand that you moved here for one reason and your neighbor might have moved here for a different reason. The goal is to continue to keep you here and engaged.

a fulfilling retirement. They desire opportunities for physical activity, mental stimulation, and emotional connections. From fitness classes and sports facilities to cultural events and group outings, our community offers a myriad of activities that cater to a diverse range of interests.

As the General Manager of our vibrant and thriving active adult community, I have often been asked the same question. The answer to this question is multifaceted, as our community represents not just a place to live, but a way of life that brings together likeminded individuals seeking a dynamic and fulfilling retirement experience.

Furthermore, an active adult community means a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie. Our residents are drawn to the idea of being part of a close-knit, supportive community where they can build lasting friendships and create cherished memories. These relationships often serve as a source of encouragement and support, contributing to a fulfilling and purposeful retirement experience.

First and foremost, an active adult community embodies a lifestyle that prioritizes well-being, social interaction, and active engagement. Our residents, typically aged 45 and older, are here to enjoy

individuals who value an active and socially fulfilling retirement, seek meaningful relationships, and desire the peace of mind that comes with a well-managed, secure, and convenient environment. Our community represents a commitment to living life to the fullest and embracing the golden years with enthusiasm and zest. When I did some searching on the internet, here are some of the things that I found about an active adult community…

No Need To Be Retired That's what makes living in this community so unique. Residents can enjoy traveling, keeping an active lifestyle or volunteering. Living at The Grand frees up more time to enjoy a “retirement of engagement” and activity.

Why is an active community important? Getting involved in your community is not only necessary for the betterment of the community, but it

also provides individuals with personal benefits. It aids in the development of connections, relationships, a sense of purpose and fulfillment, personal and professional growth, and many other things.

What are some of the benefits of a community?

Thursday, December 14, 1:00-3:00 PM This is the exact class presented in the Maricopa Community College System. Over 8,000 Arizona seniors have attended this class. Learn everything you must know before you ever invite a solar company into your home. This class is strictly educational, absolutely no selling of any kind. Whatever the reasons were that brought you here, I hope that we can continue to give you a bunch more reasons on why you should stay here.

Bob Aiken Treasurer The Grand

See budget summary on opposite page.

A few points of interest:

At our October 26th Board Meeting, the Board of Directors approved the 2024 annual budget for our association. The budget process, which includes the reforecasting of the current year’s expenses and revenue, planning for future needs by staff to best serve our community, and followed by the development, debate, and agreement on a final budget is very time consuming for all involved. On September 15th, staff presented the preliminary budget to the Board of Directors and members of the Finance and Golf Advisory Committees (FAC & GAC). The budget was developed by staff, so it was important that each department provided their respective needs and narrative supporting those needs. This meeting proved to help move the budget process forward at a faster pace than in previous years. Committee and board members were able to better understand the reasoning and insight supporting each department’s requests.

Reserves: The Reserve Subcommittee recommended no increase in the annual contribution to our Reserve Fund. It will remain at $4,430,000. These funds are paid through a portion of each homeowner’s annual assessment. Expenses: n Payroll: A merit pool representing a 4 percent increase is made available for management to reward those deserving and to challenge others in need of improvement. ❏ Three new positions were approved: ◆ Technology: Audio Visual Coordinator ◆ Activities: Event Planner/Coordinator ◆ Communications: Digital Content Coordinator n Operating Expenses continue to exceed inflation. Examples compared to the current 2023 budget: ❏ Resident relations which supports the entertainment for the social events we enjoy: $154,000 ☛ UP $58,000 ❏ Holiday Lights: $70,000 ☛ UP $27,000 (we are reviewing alternatives) ❏ Leased golf equipment: $880,000 ☛ UP $110,000 ❏ Grass seed: $336,000 ☛ UP $36,000 n Food & Beverage: $224,000 ( LESS $100,000) This reduction is the result of staff replacing Compass in the operations of our Snack Shops at our golf courses. We have hired four full-time and sixteen part-time employees to service these facilities. Revenue: n Fitness: No increases planned for group fitness classes. ❏ A $5 increase for personal training needed due to instructor costs. n Golf Fees: A $2 increase is budgeted for resident play during the winter months. We also agreed to increase fees for guests and public play.

Recommendations were then made to the Board by both the GAC and the FAC. The Board met several times in October reviewing the proposals and worked with staff to gain alignment prior to the approval on October 26th. The approved budget will raise each homeowner’s annual assessment from the current $1,795 to $1,861, an increase of $66 or just under 3.7%. The new assessment rate does not take effect until July, 2024.

If you are interested in reviewing the budgeted detail, it is available on our website under Financial Information. I need to thank Staff, my fellow board members, members of the Reserve Subcommittee, the Golf Advisory Committee, and the Finance Advisory Committee for their time and effort in completing this very difficult and challenging task. AND thank you to those who attended the budget meetings in person or on zoom. Videos of those meetings remain available on our website for your viewing. Stay Well, Keep Moving, and Be Kind to Others

C.H.A.P.S. NEEDS YOU

Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service

We Want and Need You For C.H.A.P.S. Volunteer Service We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at livegrandaz.com – Volunteer Central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol

C.H.A.P.S. —WHO WE ARE AND WHO WE ARE NOT Article submitted by: Lawrence Patrick C.H.A.P.S. member

C.H.A.P.S. is a safety observation and notification organization with volunteers who perform morning and evening patrols to help keep our community safe. All residents are welcome to join. Our primary role is to look for irregularities that pose a risk to residents and to the homes of residents who are away for an extended time. On our Evening Patrol, we look mainly for open garage doors and street light outages. A typical Evening Patrol normally covers between 20 and 25 miles. Since the beginning of 2023, we have given residents more than 1,000 notifications of open garage doors. Often, the resident was not aware of the open door, which otherwise may have remained open all night. Evening Patrol volunteers also look for any other problems or potential problems that could be a safety issue. C.H.A.P.S. is not a security organization. Reporting problems to homeowners or to other organizations, such as the Surprise Police, is our role. Call the Association Patrol at (623) 764-0809 or the Surprise Police regarding security issues. In addition, C.H.A.P.S. is not involved with enforcement of standards for homes at The Grand. We are not looking for standards violations of any kind and will not report violations. Our Vacation Watch teams will notify your designated keyholder of irrigation leaks and other problems requiring prompt attention.

CLOSE YOUR GARAGE DOOR

Our patrol teams are instructed to stop for any open garage door that is unattended. We do this for the safety of you, our neighbors. We are not the garage door police. We stop, inform the homeowner, and continue our patrol. If no one answers the door and the home appears to be unoccupied, we report that address to the Surprise Police so they can make a courtesy 22

call to ensure the safety of the homeowner. Please close those doors even when out for an evening stroll.

Your C.H.A.P.S. volunteers provide the following services.

VACATION WATCH

Residents away from home for two weeks or more can fill out a Vacation Watch form. The form is available at the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center and online at livegrandaz.com. Return completed forms to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. There are two requirements to use this program. First, the homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks. Second, a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors or windows, indications that no one is home, and other matters requiring attention. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified.

EVENING PATROL

In the evening, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for open garage doors and any other items that may pose a security or safety risk. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.

TO VOLUNTEER

We are always looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. You can select your days/evenings to volunteer and how many times each month you wish to volunteer. If you are interested, call the C.H.A.P.S. office (623) 546-7553 or ask any C.H.A.P.S. member for information. There is no meeting in December.

DONATIONS

Donations for C.H.A.P.S. are accepted at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and write “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.” on the check.

Congratulations Jim and Hermine Kopenec, volunteers of the quarter.

The Kopenecs have been C.H.A.P.S. members since 2015 and have more than 320 hours of service at C.H.A.P.S. to help keep our community safe. *C.H.A.P.S. Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service. Everyone is welcome. Make a difference with C.H.A.P.S.

A NICE FAMILY CHRISTMAS BY PHIL OLSON

The Grand Drama & Comedy Club presents its holiday play, A Nice Family Christmas, written by playwright, Phil Olson. This hilarious holiday comedy will have patrons laughing out loud and talking about this show long after the curtain call. Synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve at Helen Lundeen (Mom’s) Minneapolis apartment, three years after her husband died. An unexpected visit from crazy Uncle Bob and their outrageous Grandmother starts the evening on its wild journey. Middle son, Carl, has been charged to write an article about Christmas with his family for his newspaper, or he will be fired. The problem is, he doesn’t have his family’s consent. One by one, we learn of each family member’s secrets, problems, and dysfunctions, and when they learn that Carl is writing an article with some very personal family information, the fruitcake hits the fan. The question is, will the magic of Christmas bring them back together? This play is a snarky comedy about a bickering, dysfunctional family, with a nod to a sweet uplifting holiday story. RIM to RIM GRAND CANYON HIKE BUCKET LIST

—2023

M

Cathy Dompier and Jeanine Calabrese

ost of us have a Bucket List. It’s a list of the experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. Some of our Grand Hikers have hiked the Grand Canyon as one of their items. This story is written by one of them, Jeanine Calabrese, who hiked the canyon twice this Summer! Grand hikers who accompanied Jeanine were Dot Agather, Brenda Cooper, Shelly Myrom, Marge Rider, and Jodee Tomassani. We also have other Grand Hikers who have completed hiking the Canyon over the last two years,

Jeanine Calabrese 32

among them are Cindy Anderson, Nancy Ash, Kim Bulmann, Lori Grace, Cynthia Janulitis, Leslie Paul and Sue Petry, to name a few—there may be more! But whether you hike it or not, the Grand Canyon deserves a visit to admire one of the natural wonders of the world. It is a World Heritage site, one of the most famous and most photographed places on our earth. The canyon is 18 miles across at its widest point, and 4800 feet below the rim to the canyon floor. This beautiful, magnificent place was carved over the course of six million years and shows one of the world’s greatest powers of erosion.

Here is what Jeanine shares about her experience: I’ve always loved the outdoors and challenging myself. When I came to live in Grand in 2021 I had the opportunity to have both when I joined the Grand Hiking Club. Being single and being part of this group was the best thing that could have happened to me. The group is so welcoming and the people are phenomenal! My Grand Canyon adventure began when I was on a weekly group hike and I overheard Brenda talking about an upcoming trip to Grand Canyon and how her roommate cancelled. She needed a new roommate. This trip was not the Rim

Rim to Rim: Brenda, Jeanine, Dot, Shelly Grand Lifestyles | December 2023 | livegrandaz.com

to Rim (Rim2Rim) but a hiking trip down into the canyon. I introduced myself and my adventure began. For the next year, the canyon trip never happened because of weather issues. However, it gave me the opportunity to meet Dot and Marge, who led me to doing Rim2Rim. Both of them have been to the canyon, and Marge has even done the Rim2Rim before. Once they found out that I’ve never been to the canyon and that it was on the top of my Bucket List, the planning began! Once we secured a room on the North Rim for May, the training began. The North Rim doesn’t open until May 15 so we scheduled our date for May 25, 2023. The plan was to do the Rim2Rim in one day, 23.5 miles with about 10,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. It would take about 12-14 hours to complete. It sounded very scary to me but as I mentioned, I love a challenge. We began training in November with two hikes a week. In January we focused on adding more distances and elevation to each hike and adding additional days per week if possible. Marge put a hiking schedule together to ensure we were all able to get all the hikes in at the distance and elevation required to ensure we were ready. We also met together throughout the training to ensure we had supplies in order; i.e. food, water, clothing, first aid, etc. During training hikes we even carried all the gear we’d need, to become accustomed to carry it for the distances needed. I didn’t realize the preparation

and time needed to train, but was grateful that we did. In February 2023 an opportunity came for us to get into a lottery for a night at Phantom Ranch so that we could complete the adventure in two days rather than one. Having that option would make the hike less scary and give us more stamina on the trip out of the canyon. We won our day to stay at the ranch! Immediately everyone’s anxiety dropped 80 percent. We still kept our training schedule but we all felt that now we would be able to enjoy the hike more and not worry so much about ensuring we could get out of the canyon in a single day. Then in March we found out that the North rim wasn’t going to open until June 4 because of all the winter snow pack. This means we couldn’t do Rim2Rim. We came up with Plan B, Rim to River. This trail descends on the South Kaibab Trail all the way to the Colorado River for 6.3 miles, goes along the River for almost 2 miles. Then we’d stay at Phantom Ranch, and off the next day to re-ascend on Bright Angel Trail for 8 miles. We were disappointed about not being able to complete Rim2Rim but we were excited to experience the canyon (Only Marge had hiked it before). On May 25, our hike began with Marge, Dot, Jodee and myself. From the beginning we told ourselves this is not a race, and we are going to enjoy every

minute, which we did! The views were spectacular. The trails were well groomed. The people you meet along the way were friendly and from all around the world. Every turn was different and all I kept saying was OMG because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was warm, but we were ready with appropriate clothes, cooling towels, and plenty of water and electrolytes. My toe was hurting halfway down, so we all stopped. What I had in my first aid kit took care of it. We stopped at one of the covered areas to have a long snack break and had great conversation with all the people that were also taking a break. We made it to Phantom Ranch in about 6 hours, where we sat in the shade and had the famous ice cold lemonade…with free refills! Our rooms weren’t ready so we walked over to the creek and put our feet in the ice cold water – which was THE BEST! After we got into our rooms, got showered, the next best Phantom Ranch perk was the delicious stew dinner! Next morning we were up at 5am for coffee and off we went. The climb out was just as amazing…crossing the Colorado River, up through Havasupai gardens, and straight up Bright Angel Trail. We even saw condors! It was a tough climb out, 23% grade, but we were done by 1pm and we ALL felt GREAT! My biggest take away was that the canyon was so very beautiful. The challenge was uplifting, but the people; Marge, Dot and Jodee, who I trained and hiked together made this trip AMAZING and memorable for me. Three weeks later I was able to complete my bucket list goal of completing the Rim2Rim – this time with Dot, Brenda and Shelly. I was ready for this hike since I had just completed Rim to River. The views were different, the weather was hotter but the outcome was the same. We completed it with no issues and it was the people that made it memorable!

Rim to River: Jodee, Dot, Jeanine, Marge Grand Lifestyles | December 2023 | livegrandaz.com

As my friend Brenda said: “It is because of those ‘who had gone before us’ that we were inspired to do it AND it was their advice, experience, planning, and training that helped us achieve the goal! We couldn’t have done it without them!” 33

DOG PARK BENCH The SPP asked for more seating in the Dog Park. This bench was repurposed and placed in the park by our staff at no cost to the association.

ince July 2021, Grand residents and clubs have submitted ideas for small projects using the Small Project Proposal [SPP] process. A variety of small project ideas have been submitted and many were approved including benches for the dog park, installing an ice machine at the softball park, purchasing a sound mixer for Sonoran Plaza, increasing shade structure at Granite Falls Snack Bar and more.

FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT

Grand Residents Give Voluntary Gifts all Year Delarita Ford Communications Coordinator

M

any residents of The Grand give throughout the year by volunteering their time and talents to benefit others within and outside the community.

From collecting monetary donations to nonperishables to help the less fortunate, during this season of giving it is important to recognize the selfless acts of many in the community whose works may be known and unknown. “It is with great pride, and immense appreciation that I reflect on the extraordinary spirit of giving that permeates our community throughout the year. Residents of The Grand consistently demonstrate a remarkable commitment to making a positive impact, whether volunteering within our vibrant community or pursuing outside endeavors to benefit others,” said Jeffrey Hochman, new general manager of the Community Association Management (CAM). “Your selflessness, dedication, and willingness to lend a helping hand embody the true essence of our active adult community.” Since becoming president of the Board of Directors, René Mitchell has also acknowledged various ones in what she calls her “Shout Outs” at the beginning of board meetings. Often mentioning residents making a difference, among the many names on a growing list were Lisa Sobba who volunteers as a pharmacist at a children’s camp for cancer every

46

summer; a cyclist, Robert “Bob” Higgins’ participation in the Ride to End ALS; Michael Kolsky whose efforts to collect donated golf balls has benefited youths at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital; and Jean Dowis’ Kenya travels to offer medical services in remote areas. For seven years, Sobba, a pharmacist, volunteers at Camp Hope for children ages 6-18 who have or have had childhood cancer. “I give my time and talent to this camp in hopes of giving these children a chance to enjoy summer camp just like healthy children. I also give with a thankful heart for my healthy children and grandchildren. I often say this ‘recharges my battery’ each year,” Sobba said. “It is so fulfilling to put into perspective the joy these children find from life in spite of their struggles. The chance to witness them being kids surrounded by people who care for them is priceless.” In June, Higgins completed his ninth consecutive annual trek in the Ride to End ALS. For the first time in its 21-year history, the Tri-State Trek was reduced from a three-day, 270mile ride to a two-day, 200-mile ride. Despite a minor crash at milepost 9 on the first day, his “first involuntary dismount in six years and 30,000 miles of cycling,” he averaged 15.6 miles per hour on the first day and 14.7 on the hillier second day. “It is still very challenging, offering up a seemingly endless series of hills amidst the glory of a New England weekend. We traversed New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts, riding through quaint

Grand Lifestyles | December 2023 | livegrandaz.com

FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT little towns that might well have been lifted from a painting. He prepares for the Trek by riding daily, averaging more than 8,000 miles per year, and intensifying training in the six-weeks before the ride with cycling intervals at full speed, increasing frequency/duration until reaching a 10-day stretch of 75-minute workouts at full speed for 10 minutes and a cruising speed for five minutes, repeating that cycle five times each day. “I have been equally inspired by the ALS patients that I have met, by their caregivers, and by the tireless scientists and laboratory technicians at ALS-TDI who work around the clock to develop treatments and to search for a cure for this dreaded disease. It is my small contribution to a truly herculean effort,” said Higgins, 71, a Chicago native. The Trek accounts for about 10% of the annual budget of ALS-TDI. Higgins called it satisfying to know his efforts help fund research to treat and hopefully find a cure for the disease. He has a “Hero Board” honoring the people he rides for. Every now and then, passersby may notice signs for golf ball donations along Grand Avenue while sitting at the red light to enter the community, likely for the past five years that Kolsky has embarked on a “meaningfilled hobby.” His interest in donating to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital stemmed from witnessing his wife’s work as a child psychologist at B.C. Children’s Hospital for 25 years. “I learned what it takes to support very ill children and their families

medically, psychologically, and emotionally. As well, after I began designating my yearly donations to Phoenix Children’s Hospital (given we live here), my wife and I were able to take a tour of our incredible children’s hospital in Phoenix and saw the amazing work that is done here for the children and families of the metropolitan area of Phoenix and beyond,” Kolsky said. Stating how over 90% of childhood cancer can be cured, but rarely without life-altering consequences, he noted lots of money is needed for state-of-the-art, life-saving care and thanked those who buy or donate the golf balls. “Two years ago, friends of ours sold their home not far from here and offered me the approximately 7,000 balls they had found each evening on their walks over 12 years from the golf course bordering their property. My initial reaction was to sell the balls and keep the money, but on second thought, I realized that the gift of these balls needed a higher purpose,” said Kolsky, who is on pace to donate close to $3,000 this year. His goal is to reach $10,000. Meanwhile, Dowis recently went on her eighth trip to Kenya, with two previously to a Nicaraguan refugee camp (La Carpio Costa Rica), which included dental, optical, and medical services primarily treating malaria, wound care, burns, infections, dewormer, etc., in addition to providing over-the-counter medications. Although she has no medical

background, Dowis goes with about four doctors and up to five nurses and others like herself with necessary skills to run the endeavor from purchasing small baggies to fill with a single dose of medication before leaving the states to setting up a pseudo-pharmacy and wound care area so doctors can see the Kenyan patients ranging from entire schools to villages. “I am in charge of the distribution of drugs through our makeshift pharmacy. We have tens of thousands of doses each year,” Dowis said. “We treat between 2,500 and 5,000 each year.” Her passion is to give hope to those who live in abject poverty, she said, adding her regular volunteerism even includes running a small non-profit that paid for bone marrow transplant for people with leukemia, building a compost container at a community garden, running marathons to raise money for water wells in Kenya, cooking/serving dinners for the homeless, mobile home repairs to prevent people from being evicted, packing lunches at food banks, and neighborhood cleanups. “It just fulfills my purpose in life. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for each and every thing I am blessed with. I am content with what I have realizing so many people in this world have so much less,” said Dowis. CAM Volunteer Program Manager Denise Alessi noted how volunteerism in Grand sets the community apart from other similar communities. “We are honored to have such giving residents. Hundreds of Grand volunteers add exceptional value to our community by participating in programs and providing services that enhance our Grand lifestyle. Our volunteers’ many contributions are irreplaceable. They share their time, skills, and expertise in over 20 community-wide volunteer roles. They give of themselves and give back to our community in many ways,” Alessi said. 47

Three of these foundations are within the state of AZ – Honor Flight AZ, Soldiers Best Friend, Foundation for Service Dog Support, and one national organization, Feherty’s Troop First Foundation. We would like you to join us in our mission of supporting those who have served, do serve and continue to serve and sacrifice so much to give us our freedom. BOOMERS CLUB

The Grand Boomers are a fun-loving, young at heart, social club open to The Grand residents of any age. Our primary goal is to have a great time and meet other people living in our beautiful and active community. The Boomers are booming. At last count we had over 700 members and still growing! Afraid we're over subscribed? Just the opposite. More members mean more great ideas, more hosts for gatherings both on and off site, more folks working together to provide multiple social outlets—something to fit everyone's tastes. Over three dozen members just returned from a week on the Mexican Riviera on a new (one year old) Princess ship. Our members are clammoring for another cruise, so that's already in the works. 140 strong we enjoyed a catered fashion show--don't know which was better the luncheon or the Chico fashions (and discount card). We hosted happy hours both on and off campus. We enjoy luncheons and a "guys only" breakfast. In the future are more trips to Baleens, more happy hours, more luncheons, fashion shows, museum outings, dances, holiday everythings—and we have only begun exploring social opportunities. If you want to have fun, if you want to host and/or participate, we want you—and you'll want us. Check out our awesome website where you'll find membership info, upcoming events, photos of past activities. (You might even recognize a fellow resident or two, or three or more.). Boomers are the best $10 investment you'll make in this lifetime.

Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.

VOLUNTEERS

Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc., starting November 1. The Men Putters is a new club, started several years ago, and membership has continued to grow with each new season.

Membership, pictures and lots of other information can be found on our website: www.scgmenputters.weebly.com. Or, you can simply stop by the Cimarron green to meet us and just ask about joining.
