Uninterrupted activi

A series of educational programs and environmental activities were organized during the pandemic by the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation.

hile the pandemic put the brakes on many environmental activities in Greece, the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation continued its work for the protection of the environment and the coastline. Thanks to “Typhoon,” the vessel the Foundation uses for its operations, and the “Typhoon Project” team, the clean-up of remote sections of coast continued uninterrupted during the pandemic. Their efforts focused on coastlines in the Cyclades, the Sporades and the northern Aegean, as well as the Saronic and Thermaïc Gulfs, continuing what was begun in the summer of 2019. In total, the “Typhoon Project” team has cleaned 1,535 sections of coast and removed 195,422 kilograms of waste; its long-term goal is to clean up the entirety of the Greek coastline. The vessel's contribution to environmental protection was recognized by the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards 2020 with its Sustainability Award. In addition to its other work, the “Typhoon” also serves as a research base for scientific teams studying marine pollution in Greece.

The “SeaChange Greek Islands” program is in its fourth year, with a series of successful initiatives spanning ten Cycladic islands, including interventions to improve the lives of island inhabitants and change their relationship with the sea for the better. At the start of the new year, the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation embarked on the “Trust The Change” initiative, which provides financial support to existing enterprises and startups that are of environmental benefit to those islands participating in “SeaChange Greek Islands” – Serifos, Sikinos, Amorgos, Folegandros, Kimolos, Anafi, Donoussa, Schinoussa, Iraklia and Koufonisia.

There were also notable results delivered by the “Fishing for Litter” program, which is conducted in partnership with the environmental group iSea. The program’s goal is to reduce marine waste with the participation of the fishing community, and to change waste management practices in the fishing industry. Interest from the fishing community has been growing steadily; this year, participation grew to 30 fishing boats in 10 harbors across the country, each contributing to cleaning up the Greek seas.

Μια σειρά από περιβαλλοντικές δράσεις και εκπαιδευτικά προγράµµατα πραγµατοποιήθηκαν εν µέσω πανδηµίας από το Κοινωφελές Ίδρυµα Αθανασίου Κ. Λασκαρίδη.

 Παρά το γεγονός πως η πανδηµία έβαλε φρένο σε πολλές κοινωφελείς δράσεις στην Ελλάδα, το Κοινωφελές Ίδρυµα Αθανασίου Κ. Λασκαρίδη συνέχισε δυναµικά το έργο του για την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος και των ελληνικών ακτών. Χάρη στον «Τυφώνα», το επιχειρησιακό πλοίο του Ιδρύµατος, και στην οµάδα του «Typhoon Project», η προσπάθεια για τον καθαρισµό απρόσιτων ακτών συνεχίστηκε αδιαλείπτως. Η δράση επικεντρώθηκε στις Κυκλάδες, στις Σποράδες και στο Βόρειο Αιγαίο, στον Σαρωνικό και στον Θερµαϊκό Κόλπο, συνεχίζοντας το έργο που ξεκίνησε το καλοκαίρι του 2019. Συνολικά, η οµάδα του «Typhoon Project» έχει καθαρίσει περισσότερες από 1.535 ακτές και έχει αποµακρύνει περισσότερα από 195.422 κιλά απορρίµµατα, ενώ για τη συµβολή της στην προστασία του περιβάλλοντος διακρίθηκε στα Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Virtual Awards 2020, κατακτώντας το Sustainability Award. Ταυτόχρονα, ο «Τυφώνας» λειτουργεί ως βάση για επιστηµονικές οµάδες που µελετούν τη θαλάσσια ρύπανση στη χώρα µας, ενώ ο στόχος του είναι ο καθαρισµός του συνόλου της ελληνικής ακτογραµµής. Το πρόγραµµα «SeaChange Greek Islands» συνεχίζεται για τέταρτη χρονιά µε δράσεις σε δέκα νησιά των Κυκλάδων και παρεµβάσεις που βελτιώνουν τη ζωή των κατοίκων και συµβάλλουν στην αλλαγή της σχέσης τους µε τη θάλασσα. Με την έναρξη της νέας χρονιάς, το Κοινωφελές Ίδρυµα Αθανασίου Κ. Λασκαρίδη έκανε το επόµενο βήµα µε το πρόγραµµα «Trust The Change», το οποίο ενισχύει οικονοµικά υπάρχουσες και νεοσύστατες επιχειρήσεις µε τρόπο επωφελή για το περιβάλλον στα νησιά που συµµετέχουν στο «SeaChange Greek Islands»: Σέριφο, Σίκινο, Αµοργό, Φολέγανδρο, Κίµωλο, Ανάφη, ∆ονούσα, Σχοινούσα, Ηρακλειά, Κουφονήσια.

Σηµαντικά είναι, επίσης, τα αποτελέσµατα του προγράµµατος «Ψαρεύοντας Απορρίµµατα – Fishing for Litter», το οποίο υλοποιείται σε συνεργασία µε την περιβαλλοντική οργάνωση iSea. Στόχος του είναι η µείωση των θαλάσσιων απορριµµάτων µε τη συµµετοχή της αλιευτικής κοινότητας και η αλλαγή των πρακτικών διαχείρισης των απορριµµάτων της αλιευτικής βιοµηχανίας. Το ενδιαφέρον της αλιευτικής κοινότητας µεγαλώνει σταθερά και φέτος συµµετέχουν 30 αλιείς τράτας σε 10 λιµάνια της χώρας.

The historic house of Sir Patrick and Joan Leigh Fermor offers quiet and welcoming summer stays.  Ένα από τα οµορφότερα οικήµατα της Ελλάδας, στην Καρδαµύλη, µέσα σε έναν µεσογειακό κήπο γεµάτο µε κυπαρίσσια, ελιές και σκίνους, η ιστορική οικία των Sir Patrick και Joan Leigh Fermor, προσφέρει ήσυχες και φιλόξενες καλοκαιρινές διακοπές. Τα Aria Hotels, που ειδικεύονται στη διαχείριση και τη φροντίδα ιστορικών οικηµάτων, ανοίγουν και φέτος την ειδυλλιακή βίλα του Βρετανού φιλέλληνα συγγραφέα, λόγιου και παρασηµοφορηµένου ήρωα του Β΄ Παγκοσµίου Πολέµου, γνωστού ως Paddy, και της συζύγου του Joan, την οποία έχτισαν µε αγάπη και έκαναν σπίτι τους τη δεκαετία του 1960. Η κυρίως οικία, Main House, περιλαµβάνει τρεις σουίτες και µπορεί να φιλοξενήσει µέχρι έξι άτοµα, ενώ το Traditional House, που αποτελούσε τον χώρο εργασίας του συγγραφέα, και ο ξενώνας, Guest House, µπορούν να φιλοξενήσουν έως δύο άτοµα το καθένα.  It was in October 1944, right a er Greece’s liberation from Hitler’s army – four years a er the resounding “NO” that Greece delivered to Mussolini.

And I, a young boy, went to my grandfather’s room at the Hotel Grande Bretagne every morning to admire the allied troops marching around Syntagma Square. There were Scottish soldiers wearing kilts and holding bagpipes, Indians in turbans, Canadians with burgundy berets, and the British navy band, who wore white sunhats. There were jeeps, cannons, and tanks. The sidewalks were bursting with people, especially when the Sacred Band, the elite Greek Special Forces unit, arrived. Women flew out of the crowd to embrace one of their own, who’d break formation just for a second before quickly returning to the ranks. A day that’s etched in my memory forever is the 28th of October, 1944. The square was filled with people from very early in the morning, and high-ranking Allied officers were coming and going from the Grande Bretagne, accompanied by Greek officers and members of government. A er attending the service in the Metropolitan Church, they returned for the great parade. The Evzones were lined up in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and nurses were standing in the shape of a great “V” for victory. The Archbishop, in purple robes, was surrounded by politicians and members of the clergy and the military. British and Greek regiments of the Army, Navy and Air Force paraded in front of them, as did their military bands. Girls dressed in khaki, wearing kepis and with rifles resting on their shoulders, walked past proudly. In the eyes of a boy watching events unfold from a balcony of the Hotel Grande Bretagne, it was an unforgettable day of national pride.  ΕΘΝΙΚΗ ΥΠΕΡΗΦΑΝΕΙΑ Ήταν την εποχή της δεύτερης απελευθέρωσης από τον χιτλερικό στρατό τον Οκτώβριο του 1944 – τέσσερα χρόνια µετά το µεγάλο ΟΧΙ στον Μουσολίνι.

Κι εγώ, µικρό παιδί, κάθε πρωί βρισκόµουν στο δωµάτιο του παππού µου στη Μεγάλη Βρεταννία για να θαυµάσω τα συµµαχικά στρατεύµατα να παρελαύνουν στην πλατεία Συντάγµατος. Σκωτσέζους που φορούσαν κιλτ και κρατούσαν πίπιζες, Ινδούς µε σαρίκια, Καναδούς µε γκρενά µπερέδες και µπάντες του αγγλικού ναυτικού µε άσπρα αντηλιακά καπέλα στο κεφάλι. Τζιπ, κανόνια, τανκς... Τα πεζοδρόµια γεµάτα κόσµο, κυρίως όταν έφτανε ο Ιερός Λόχος. Συχνά πετάγονταν γυναίκες για να σφίξουν στην αγκαλιά τους κάποιον δικό τους, ο οποίος για ένα λεπτό εγκατέλειπε τον σχηµατισµό και γρήγορα επέστρεφε στη θέση του. Μια µέρα που έχει χαραχτεί στη µνήµη µου ήταν η 28η Οκτωβρίου. Από νωρίς η πλατεία γέµισε κόσµο και από το GB έβγαιναν ανώτεροι αξιωµατικοί των συµµάχων, αλλά και Έλληνες στρατιωτικοί και µέλη της κυβερνήσεως. Αφού παρακολούθησαν τη λειτουργία στη Μητρόπολη, επέστρεψαν για τη µεγάλη παρέλαση. Μπροστά στον Τάφο του Άγνωστου Στρατιώτη βρίσκονταν οι Εύζωνοι, αλλά και νοσοκόµες, που σε παράταξη σχεδίαζαν ένα τεράστιο V (Victory). Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος, µε πορφυρά άµφια, περιστοιχιζόταν από τον κλήρο, τους στρατιωτικούς και την πολιτική ηγεσία. Μπροστά τους παρήλαυναν σώµατα του στρατού, του ναυτικού και της αεροπορίας, των Άγγλων και των Ελλήνων, και οι µπάντες. Κοπέλες στα χακί µε δίκοχα (kepis) καπέλα περνούσαν υπερήφανα µε το όπλο στον ώµο. Ήταν µια αξέχαστη ηµέρα εθνικής υπερηφάνειας στα µάτια ενός παιδιού, που παρακολουθούσε τα γεγονότα από το µπαλκόνι της Μεγάλης Βρεταννίας.
