Arizona Masonry 2019/2020 Masonic Year Theme Brethren, I am truly humbled and honored by having been elected to serve as this year’s Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Arizona. As such, I pledge to you to have an attentive ear and to be of service to all of my brethren.

As we start this Masonic year, I would like to reiterate that this year my theme is Back to the Basics and nothing is more basic than our ritual. Our ritual provides us with the basic knowledge, or cornerstone, upon which we are expected to build our Masonic Temple thereby allowing us to learn and to grow to be exemplary Master Masons.

Over the last several years I have heard complaints of and witnessed a decline in our ritual. Should this be the case as you visit a lodge, I would ask each of you to think about our obligation not to cheat, wrong or defraud a brother, or anyone for that matter, out of the value of anything. I would ask you to whisper wise counsel to the Worshipful Master and his officers in order to instill the need for our basic teachings as found in our ritual. We are admonished to live our lives as prescribed in our ritual and by the Volume of Sacred Law, so why would we not provide good, wholesome ritual to our new initiates as well as to our established brethren.

Second, I would like for us to speak of the Masonic family. Today there seems to be a lot of separation or disjointed behavior between the Blue Lodge and the appendant and concordant bodies. We all have the same precepts of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth as well as Faith, Hope and Charity. Each of these basic precepts are what make us who we are, so why would we not practice them in our dealings within the Masonic Family? So, I would urge you to practice the precepts we have been taught and support each other, our ladies and our youth groups, in order to assure our future as a people and as Masons.

In closing I would like to say once more how much I appreciate your confidence in me and I promise to serve to the best of my ability.

Arizona Masonry Would you like to remember a Masonic family member, Masonic friend or notable Mason? Recent changes in the Arizona Masonic Code now allow you to purchase a Memorial Life Membership for any deceased Mason that you wish to memorialize in your home Lodge. The fee for these memberships is only 10 times yearly dues.

The Deceased Mason’s name will remain on the Lodge’s register for Perpetual Membership in perpetuity and the Lodge will receive an annuity every year form this help cover Lodge expenses.

Arizona DeMolay Arizona DeMolay is launching two very exciting programs beginning in July that involve recognizing Senior DeMolay by presenting service pins and beginning an Alumni Association.

Along with recognizing past DeMolay, we are looking for our State Officers and State staff to visit Lodges to provide Senior DeMolay with their service pins recognizing those members who have served as DeMolay for 25, 50, and 75 years.

I have attached two separate short articles for the Copper Post explaining the two programs.

Rider’s of the 3rd Degree June 7, 2019 137th Annual Grand Communication By a “nearly” unanimous vote, Resolution 2019-2, proposed by the Riders of the 3rd Degree was passed by the Brethren attending the 137th Annual Grand Communication of Freemasons in Arizona, giving the Riders of the 3rd Degree Official Recognition by the Grand Lodge of Arizona. The resolution will now be know as “Section 1-122 The Riders of the Third Degree Masonic Riders Association” of the Arizona Masonic Code. For the past six years, The Riders of the Third Degree have been riding together as well as doing charitable acts in the state of Arizona. As a National 501c-3 Organization, the Riders 3 now have Chapters in Phoenix and Tucson.

With new Brethren joining in Flagstaff and Prescott, it’s only a matter of time before there’s a Chapter in the Northern part of Arizona. The Grand Chapters annual Toy rides benefiting Phoenix Children’s Hospital and, The Masonic Children’s at Risk fund, as well as the Tucson Riders 3 Stuffed Animal Drive benefitting the Square and Compass Hospital in Tucson are prime examples of Freemasonry directly impacting the communities they live in. The new “Working Tools for Students” program started by the Grand Chapter in Phoenix has spread to Tucson via the Riders 3. Resembling a 21st Century “Bikes for Books” program, the Working Tools program presents deserving students chosen by the Principal and faculty of the school brand new top of the line, HP Chrome Books, in hopes of impacting the students view of education as well as their impression of Freemasonry.

Annual donations of $357.00 per active Chapter to the Arizona Children at Risk Fund now total $714.00 per year to a very important Masonic Charity.

A custom of the Riders 3 established at their inception, the outgoing Grand Master of Freemasonry in Arizona, MWB Craig Gross was made an Honorary Life Member of the Riders of the 3rd Degree at this years Grand Communication, marking the 6th Grand Master to be honored in such fashion.

Around the Jurisdiction The Phoenix RiteCare Center, a new organization within the Scottish Rite, took great pleasure in recognizing Jose Delarosa, our first Literacy student graduate, at the June stated meeting. His testimonial was short but poignantly sincere in the appreciation for his new literacy skills in reading, writing and decoding the English language. With his mentor and boss, Mark Hafner present, thy both express their thanks and gratitude to the brethren, and in particular coaches Bro John Harman 32° and Ill Bob Rimer 33°. His TILLS testing evaluation showed good improvements in all 15 measured areas. He also received a promotion at work for it.

The Phoenix Scottish Rite Foundation, Inc. and its RiteCare Center provide literacy coaching audio/visual lessons to any Mason, their families and the community at large as well as partial scholarships to any Speech Language Pathology students state -wide.

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands as the most distinguished monument to Washington ever build by a private organization –THE MASONS Erected in the 1920s and 30s, it soars 333 feet as a beacon of Light and knowledge, educating and inspiring all who visit it.

Recognized in 2015 as a National Historic Landmark, the Memorial is one of the most impressive and iconic buildings in the area around our nation’s capital. Our new fundraising endeavor, The Landmark Century Campaign, aims to support a thorough restoration of the Memorial. And we can help!

Today, the Memorial is a museum like no other in the world. Everything we do revolves around our vision: “to inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason, and Father of our Country.” Open seven days a week, the Memorial offers detailed exhibits and guided tours that teach the general public about George Washington, his life and virtues, and the role that Freemasonry played throughout his life. Further, the Memorial is an important space for the performing arts, social gatherings, public events, and educational seminars. And, of course, it is an active Masonic temple, housing two Craft lodges and regularly hosting visiting lodges from around the country. The Memorial is a central hub connecting Masons to one another, and connecting the Craft to the public, our nation, and our world For the past decade, the Memorial Association has devoted tremendous energy and resources to the renovation of the Memorial. Major exhibits have been added. Interiors have been repaired and repainted. Lighting has been updated. But the most considerable work is the top-to-bottom restoration of the building itself—the first such renovation since the Memorial was completed nearly a century ago.

Beginning at the Memorial’s pyramid level, we have begun a multi-year project to perform all needed structural repairs. Stone by stone, are repointing the mortar and protecting the building from water penetration. When completed, the building will be in

better than new condition.

Masonic Trivia: When Cochise County was formed from the easternortion of Pima County on February 1, 1881, Tombstone became the new county seat. In 1913, the county Sheriff, Harry C. Wheeler, who by State statute requirement lived in Tombstone but applied to receive the degrees in Mount Moriah Lodge No. 18 in Douglas, Arizona.

King Solomon Lodge No. 5 filed a protest to the Grand Master claiming a jurisdictional conflict.

MWB Charles Smith determined that since Sherriff Wheeler has always considered Douglas home and returned there to vote, that he was correct in applying to Mount Moriah

Masonic Trivia: The first communication of Smithton Lodge No. 1, of Kansas, was held on the top of a hill overlooking the Missouri River on November 30, 1854. The altar was arranged on a burr oak stump and the Tyler performed his duties mounted on a horse. The Lodge continued to meet on that hill until June of 1855, when they moved to a warehouse owned by the Secretary.

Masonic Trivia Masonic Trivia: Ignacio Bonillas Frajio was a Mexican diplomat and was a Mexican ambassador to the United States. He held a degree in mine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 1913, Bonillas was part of the war cabinet of the Constitutionalist movement. Carranza's Constitutionalist faction defeated its rivals in 1915 and Carranza became president.

On 12 February 1917, Carranza appointed Bonillas Mexican Ambassador to the U.S., the top position for a Mexican diplomat. Bonillas was part of the three member diplomatic delegation responsible of securing the unconditional withdrawal of the U.S. forces of the Punitive Expedition from Mexico that had unsuccessfully sought to capture Pancho Villa following his incursion into Columbus, New Mexico.

Carranza supported the candidacy of Bonillas in the election of 1920, believing that Bonillas's connections in Washington were of supreme importance, even though he was not very well known in Mexico. On 1 November 1919, Carranza announced his support for Bonillas's candidacy. For Sonoran revolutionary generals Adolfo de la Huerta, Alvaro Obregón, and Plutarco Elías Calles, the unknown civilian Bonillas was an unacceptable successor to the presidency, and they staged a revolt under the Plan of Agua Prieta.

Carranza, his cabinet, the Supreme Court, and Bonillas fled by train from Mexico City in May 1920. The train was intercepted by rebels. Carranza was murdered, and Bonillas was captured. WB Ignacio Bonillas was a Past Master of Nogales Lodge No. 11

Masonic Trivia Masonic Trivia: Marcus Aurelius "Mark" Smith was an American attorney and politician who served eight terms as Arizona Territorial Delegate to Congress and as one of the first two Senators from Arizona. As a Delegate he was a leader in the effort to gain statehood for Arizona.

Smith arrived to Arizona when he moved California to the boomtown of Tombstone, where he became one of the first attorneys in Cochise County when Judge William Henry Stilwell admitted him to the territorial bar in 1881. He established a law practice with Ben Goodrich and quickly gained a reputation with his lively courtroom style. An example of this came when a donkey located outside a courtroom window began braying while opposing counsel was making a long speech. Smith used the resulting laughter as reason to object to "two attorneys arguing a case in the court simultaneously. He later moved to Tucson and was a long time member of Tucson Lodge No 4 F & A M Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Arizona.

Masonic Education CONTINUITY To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, "Without continual growth, improvement, achievement, even success, have no meanings". Judge what you have, but keep moving forward, opening doors, and discover new ways and whys, and get to know Curiosity as a faithful friend. Continuity works because growth has no limits using intelligence, imagination, and awe filled wonder.

Change is chance if you want it that way. Let change grow and continue with improvement. Failure is the chance to begin again; continuity is the chance to grow.

Interruption generally has an adverse effect on continuity, but may give a person the clearer view of the past, and new ideas for the future. Lack of continuity often is fueled by what may be missing: Zeal, ability, success, optimism, planning, knowledge, and self faith. Know when continuity may be a path to darkness, but approach positive opportunities to continue. Value the continuous relationships of all things personal, family, friends, learning, and life.

All Masons are justly proud of the Creed of Brother Franklin which played such an important role in the early years of out Country: He was ever mindful of his Masonic teachings when he said: “ But that the most acceptable service of God is doing good to man” “ and that god will certainly reward virtue and punish vice, either here or hereafter” “For my own part, when I am employed in servicing others, I do not look upon myself as conferring favors, but as paying debts. In my travels and since my settlement, I have received much kindness from men, to whom I shall never have an opportunity of making the least direct return; and numberless mercies from God, who is infinitely above being benefited by our services. Those kindness from men I can therefore only return to their fellow men, and I can only show my gratitude for these mercies from God, by a readiness to help other children and my brethren.”

ARIZONA MASONIC CHARITIES BEING HELPED

BY OUR PURCHASES AT AMAZON.COM Brethren, Friends, and Family, This year the Masonic Charities of Arizona approved 18 grants totaling $30,000 to organizations throughout Arizona. These 501c3 charitable organizations provide much needed services to their communities. Those services include assistance to our Veterans at the three VA Hospitals in Arizona, Domestic abuse shelters, child learning disabilities, training and assistance for people with special needs, support for soldiers abroad, Adult literacy programs and Personal hygiene kits for the working poor and homeless.

We are able to award these Grants from the income of our investment fund, Lodge and Personal donations and support from Grand Lodge. In order to keep up with the desire to expand our Grant distribution to more organizations and communities around the State we ask for your help.
