Granby Schools to transition to full reopening
Granby Public Schools will start the school year on Sept. 1, 2020, using a hybrid model as a transition to a full reopening. This will allow the implementation of proactive health and safety protocols. This transitional entry is a 10- to 13-day period during which students will utilize their “maroon” or “gold” designation to attend school inperson on an every-other-day schedule. A reduced number of students will be in the building each day while routines and relationships are being established. Students with last names starting A–K will be assigned to the maroon group and students with last names L–Z will be assigned to the gold group. Families living in the same household with different last names will be scheduled together. On days when students are not in-person they will have daily expectations for engagement and academics. Pre-Kindergarten students will follow the Monday-Thursday schedules for morning or afternoon sessions as as-
signed. In partnership with the Granby YMCA, a program has been created for families who are in need of childcare during this transitional entry. Students and staff will be required to wear face coverings while in the school building. Parents cannot opt students out of wearing masks but some students will not be able to wear masks for documented medical reasons. Exceptions are PE, lunch, select music classes, mask breaks when socially distanced, teachers when greater than six feet away, and staff in offices alone. Full reopening dates are as follows: Kelly Lane Primary School – Wednesday, Sept. 16 Wells Road Intermediate School – Wednesday, Sept. 16 Granby Memorial Middle School – Monday, Sept. 21 Granby Memorial High School – Monday, Sept. 21

A LOOK AT FARMING IN GRANBY Granby Agriculture in the Summer of COVID-19 This has been a most disconcerting year, but one thing here in Granby has remained constant: the power of agriculture. We are so lucky to have so many agricultural establishments producing such a wonderful array of vegetables, many of which are grown with no pesticides of any kind. Crews wearing masks in the hot sun, constantly disinfecting crates and tables, did their jobs so we could continue to enjoy, literally, the fruits of their labor. A special section beginning on page 25 gives a glimpse into some of the places and people that provide this treasure for us, and introduces two new farmers. Be sure to check out the article on the Virtual Farmers’ Market if you are reticent to go out in public or simply don’t have time to travel to the different farms. Thank you, farmers!
Students will be provided two masks and a pouch for storage when they return to school.

Roundabout nearing completion Photographer Rob Flanigan captured this bird’s eye view of the new roundabout at East Street and 10/202 with his drone camera. The new intersection was designed to reduce speed and increase traffic capacity and efficiency, with less potential for accidents.
