Two steps forward with some help from past expertise

Spring is here and summer just around the corner. And we are turning the corner on COVID too. Re-opening stages are underway, and vaccines are available— so let’s all get inoculated! Change is underway here in town, let’s work as a community to have an enjoyable summer. Bill Smith is again Town Manown ager, while a search is started. Granby all welcomes back Bill to his former alk Smith role, after the passby Jim Lofink ing of Town Manager John Ward on March 17. Bill said, “We all mourn the passing of John, our good friend and an accomplished public servant. I was humbled and honored to be asked to serve Granby again while we seek a full-time Town Manager. After consulting with my wife Rhonda, I accepted this interim responsibility. Town Hall continues its hard work to serve Granby, now with several new staff who are delightful to work with. Together we will work on building a path forward out of this pandemic era.” Readers might remember that Bill served

for 39 years as Granby town manager, retiring in 2017. At that time, it took six months to complete a search and hire his successor, and the Board of Selectmen are moving forward and hoping to reduce that time. Services are re-opening. Many town services are re-opening, with masks and social distancing still in place. As the Executive Orders are subject to change, it’s advisable to check first. But as of this writing: Town Hall is open, including the Town Clerk’s office and many others. With limited office space, it’s advisable to check with the department first by phone or email, to avoid a potential wait. The Granby Library is open without appointment Monday–Saturday for adults and teens, and by appointment for visits to the Children’s Room. Cossitt Library is closed. Granby Senior Center will be gradually re-opening starting May 3, with capacity limits and updated membership cards to facilitate contact tracing. Granby Parks and Rec summer camp registrations are open as are Holcomb Farm facility rentals. Town improvements are underway, with bridge replacements on both Griffin and Hungary Roads starting this

2021 Memorial Day Parade Schedule Granby’s annual Memorial Day parade and program will be held on Monday, May 31. Parade Marshal James O. Hall announced that the honorary parade marshal this year is Maurice J. Brassard, World War II U.S. Army Air Corps. The parade will line up at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot on Bank Street and step off at 10 a.m. sharp. Stops will be made to lay wreaths at the War on Terror, Legion and World War I monuments before continuing to the cemetery. Services there will include guest speaker Dr. Jordan F. Grossman, Granby Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Kalvin Jones, pastor of West Granby and Copper Hill United Methodist Churches, will offer the invocation and benediction. There also will be a firing squad salute and taps. Following the service, the parade will return to the green and disband. After a brief recess, the Marquis of Granby Fife and Drum Corps will present a short concert. A limited number of concession stands on the green will offer food for sale as well. All vehicles, floats and concessions on the green must be approved by Parade Marshal James Hall. For more information, call him at 860-653-3819.

No April Fool’s joke On April 1, John Dewey captured this photo in his backyard on Copper Hill Road in Granby. The black bear ate from the feeder and eventually broke it—clearly giving Dewey the message that it was time to bring the bird feeders in for the season.

Aquarion announces water conservation program Aquarion Water Company announced a water conservation program that includes a mandatory sprinkler irrigation schedule for its customers in East Granby, Granby and Simsbury. The schedule will help to conserve water supplies by reducing overwatering of lawns and gardens through a maximum two days per week schedule. The purpose of this conservation program is to ensure that local water supplies remain sufficient for critical needs such as human consumption and fire protection. A similar watering schedule was launched in southwestern Connecticut in 2017, and has contributed to more than two billion gallons of water being saved. These conservation efforts have also helped towns in southwestern Connecticut avoid a complete ban on outdoor water use during dry summer months. Through customer adoption of the irrigation schedule, Aquarion expects to save millions of gallons of water this year.

Research shows lawns and gardens can thrive on reduced watering. By encouraging roots to grow deeper into the soil, they are able to absorb more moisture and nutrients, even during dry spells. Customers may continue using drip irrigation, soaker hoses and handheld watering at any time. Homes and businesses with automatic sprinkler irrigation systems often use large volumes of water—about 40 percent more than properties without the systems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other experts identify the overuse of outdoor irrigation as a major source of strain on local water supplies while providing no benefit to lawns and gardens. Aquarion’s permanent, twice-weekly irrigation schedule listed below began on April 1, 2021. Customers with evennumbered street addresses may water lawns on Sundays and Wednesday, between 12:01–10 a.m., or between 6 p.m.–midnight. Customers with odd-
