THEATRE ETIQUETTE

MIRACLE ON THE 34TH STREET is a holiday classic. I remember when I was young, many families gathered during each Christmas season to watch two beloved movies – It's A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street They were staples for many Americans, and both were “must see” movies each year when broadcast on televi sion – long before holiday favorites like A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, Elf and others. The same is true for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade depicted in the opening scenes and remains a favorite for many.
The motion picture was released by 20th Century Fox in 1947, which is the same year that our musical is set. The movie starred notable leading ladies Maureen O’Hara and Natalie Wood as Doris and Susan. Their castmate, Edmund Gwenn, won an Academy Award for his supporting role as Kris Kringle. The movie was nominated for Best Picture and won honors for Best Screenplay and Best Story.
Meredith Willson – best known for writing the book, music and lyrics for THE MUSIC MAN – transformed the story from the movie into a Broadway musical originally entitled HERE’S LOVE. The musical performed at the Shubert Theatre in Manhattan from October 1963 until July 1964. Featured was Willson’s 1951 song “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” a holiday hit popularized by Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis and, most recently, Michael Bublé. Performing and working on a Christmas musical is not an easy task. Rehearsals begin mid-fall and usually lead to a shortened time with family during Thanks giving, as the cast must still practice both on stage and at home as they finalize their lines, songs and characters. Then, many extra performances mean extralong weekends of shows plus some weeknights right before Christmas.
My sincere thanks to the cast and crew for their hard work this holiday season and for their sacrifices in making this production a success. I especially appreciate the stage managers, Hayley Vantine and Victoria Minton Tate, for keeping us all organized and moving forward with planning, rehearsals, and countless other things required during our Opera House productions.
Merry Christmas to you all!
