I remember watching the movie Hello, Dolly! repeatedly as a child and being captivated by Barbra Streisand’s voice and her glamorous costumes. I was mesmerized by this magical world where people spontaneously burst into song and dance. It was a colorful world full of beautiful music and happy endings, and I could not get enough of it. There is no denying that these past few years have been heavy and difficult. Each one of us has been affected by loss, uncertainty, loneliness or worry. I invite you now to put aside your troubles and join us in this musical theatre world for some lighthearted entertainment.
HELLO, DOLLY! is one of the most familiar and enduring musicals of all time. It premiered on Broadway in 1964 starring Carol Channing as Dolly, winning an incredible ten Tony Awards. The 1969 movie of the musical starring Barbra Streisand won three Academy Awards. It has since had four Broadway revivals, with Dolly portrayed by legends such as Pearl Bailey, Mary Martin, Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters. The music of HELLO, DOLLY! was even featured in a 2008 Disney Pixar film, WALL-E, bringing the beloved songs “It Only Takes a Moment” and “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” to a whole new generation.
For this production, I was inspired by elements of Vaudeville, a form of entertainment that was wildly popular in America in the 1890’s (the time period that HELLO, DOLLY! is set). Vaudeville was essentially a live variety show that included audience interaction and featured musical acts, dancing, physical feats like acrobatics, and especially comedy. I would like to thank the amazing production and design teams for sharing their skills and creativity to help bring this Vaudeville vision to life.
I would also like to thank my assistant director, Jonah Hardt. His ideas and insight were priceless. Thank you to Micky Shearon for trusting me with this show. It has been an honor, a privilege and a delight to direct this wonderful cast. Lastly, I would like to dedicate this production to my parents, David and Kristina Brown, who raised me on classic musicals. It instilled in me a lifelong passion for musical theatre that has brought such happiness to me, especially during hard times. My hope for you, wonderful audience, is that you leave the Opera House today with a song in your heart and a smile on your face and that your troubles will seem lighter, if only for a moment.
