WELCOME The world has changed immeasurably since we last gathered to honor the finest achievements in film and television entertainment. Thankfully, tonight we again celebrate in person with so many great performers and creators in our brand new home, the landmark Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel. Our long-time host Taye Diggs is joined by a marvelous new co-host, Nicole Byer. And our domestic broadcast partner The CW is augmented by an alliance with cable powerhouse TBS, bringing our show to more viewers than ever before. lso new tonight is our second stage at the iconic Savoy Hotel in London, where many nominees and friends are participating in the live telecast. Simultaneously on both sides of the pond, our industry’s brightest stars will share the excitement as more than 500 members of the Critics Choice Association exercise their expertise to honor the best of the best. The CCA is also immensely proud to recognize the incomparable Billy Crystal, who has conquered every aspect of entertainment from film and television to stage and publishing, with our Lifetime Achievement Award. Halle Berry, who continues to break down barriers acting and now directing, is the honored recipient of our SeeHer Award. This important recognition is sponsored by our friends at the Association of National Advertisers. Our Thank Yous to those who make this event possible start with The CW, led by longtime ally, Mark Pedowitz. The staunch support of the entire CW family, including Gaye Hirsch, Cyle Zezo, Patricia Dennis, Rick Haskins, Mitch Nedick, Rob Tuck, Barbra Robin, Rick Frey, Ann Miyagi, Jessica Lund, Howard Schneider, Hiram Norman, Kevin Levy, Paul Hewitt, Melissa Greer, Justin Chlowitz, Elisabeth O’Brien, Michael Murphy and so many others has been invaluable on this year’s show. We are also delighted to collaborate with the TBS team including Brett Weitz, Corie Henson, Kristina Edwards, Michelle Durham, Missy Chambless, Jori Arancio, John Palmerton, and Johanna Fuentes. The creativity and perseverance of executive producer Bob Bain and his team always makes assembling this show a pleasure. Special thanks to Paul Flattery, Kelly Brock, Cheryl Teetzel-Moore, “Mo” Moroney, Michael Dempsey, Andrea Regalado, Michael Potts, Kurt Guisler, Jeremy Tominberg, Scott Welborn, Tom Kenny, Gary Natoli, Jaz Prasertlum, Karen Hamilton, Dano Rowley, Megan McLaughlin, Marti Ramirez, Jackie Stathis, Candice Clark, Eddie Delbridge, as well as the Fairmont Century Plaza crew, including our point man Duane Mah. The invaluable Sam Rubin heads up our Live Red Carpet Show. This year’s Red Carpet broadcast is seen coastto-coast thanks to our partners at Nexstar Media Group and their flagship affiliate KTLA-TV in Los Angeles. Sam is joined on-air by Jessica Holmes, Megan Henderson and Doug Kolk. Behind the scenes our coverage is powered by KTLA’s Entertainment Department; special thanks to Grace Mendoza, the Executive Producer of the broadcast, as well as Matt Groeteke, Brian Choo, Estella Medina and Kevin Bolyard. KTLA’s Vice President and General Manager Janene Drafs is a vital friend and supporter of the CCA. We are happy to welcome back Sunkist and Ms. Christina Ward. We are also pleased to be broadcast live in Australia on the TEN Network. Thanks to our Australian reps Valentina Stojanovska and Blackbook Management, and to Rainmaker Content and Saralo MacGregor at North Node - and Peter Hartz and The Switch for taking us around the world. And a special shout out to our longtime partners at Turner Latin America. The steady leadership of the CCA should be noted here, starting with CEO Joey Berlin and our mighty Board of Directors: Paulette Cohn, Jacqueline Coley, Clayton Davis, Grae Drake, Shawn Edwards, Jim Ferguson, Sean O’Connell, Mark Ramsey, and Sam Rubin, with advisor Sara Voorhees, Film Branch president Pete Hammond, TV Branch president Ed Martin, and Documentary Branch president Christopher Campbell. The unnamed and unabashed members of our TV Nominating Committees, coordinated by David Freedman, are the unsung heroes of this show. Eternal gratitude to our event sponsors Fiji Waters and Champagne Collet along with the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, Tanqueray and Old Bridge Cellars. And wholehearted thanks to our Cocktail Party sponsor Warner Media and to our friends at Netflix for throwing the After Party. The sage counsel of Dan Black of Greenberg Traurig remains vital to our success, along with our voting czars and accountants Gregory Mogab and Debby Britton at Duffy Kruspodin. Dera Freund, Lisa Waters, Ken Rose and Elizabeth Ferris and their crack production group, Gary Mezzatesta and his team at UPP, Andy Gelb, Julia Rossen and Slate PR, and program booklet designer Josh Orenstein are most esteemed allies. Finally, on behalf of the CCA membership, whose dedication and wisdom is at the heart of the Critics Choice Awards, we give our heartfelt thanks to each of our Nominees and Presenters and all our friends in the industry and the creative community both here and in the UK for joining us on our special night. Our enduring promise to writers, directors and producers: Bring us your best work and we will help the public find it.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

BILLY CRYSTAL

This evening’s recipient of the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award, Billy Crystal is the Caesar of modern entertainment, having conquered the worlds of television, motion pictures, Broadway and non-fiction literature. Equally adept at drama and comedy, his success is due to his deep rooted understanding of humanity that appeals to the heart as well as the funny bone.

Tony and Emmy Award-winning comedian, actor, producer, writer, and director Billy Crystal is known to audiences around the world as the star of such feature films as “When Harry Met Sally…,” “City Slickers” and “Analyze This,” as a cast member of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and as the acclaimed nine-time host of the Academy Awards. Crystal landed his first major television role in 1977 on the comedy series “Soap,” playing Jodie Dallas, one of the first openly gay characters on TV. In 1984 he hosted “Saturday Night Live” and a few months later joined the regular cast. His best-known SNL creation was Fernando, an unctuous talk-show host whose tagline, “You look mahvelous!” entered the popular lexicon. In 2017, he completed a 30-city North American tour, which garnered rave reviews in every market. The previous year, Crystal embarked on a hugely successful and critically acclaimed 13-day tour in six major cities of Australia and New Zealand. Crystal’s many feature film credits include the buddy cop comedy “Running Scared” (1986), Rob Reiner’s comic fairy tale “The Princess Bride” (1987), and Danny DeVito’s dark comedy “Throw Momma From the Train” (1987). But his breakthrough role came in 1989 when he starred opposite Meg Ryan in Reiner’s “When Harry Met Sally…,” which became a romantic touchstone for a generation of moviegoers. Other iconic titles include “Mr. Saturday Night” (1992) and “America’s Sweethearts” (2001). He also starred opposite Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei in the 2012 Christmas family comedy “Parental Guidance,” which he also produced. In addition, he is the voice of one-eyed Mike Wazowski in Pixar’s animated global blockbusters “Monsters, Inc.” (2001), its prequel “Monsters University” (2013), and the Disney+ television series “Monsters at Work” (2021). Crystal’s latest work includes the friendship comedy “Standing Up, Falling Down” (2020) opposite Ben Schwartz, and his highly anticipated directorial feature “Here Today” (2021), in which Crystal directs, produces, and stars opposite Tiffany Haddish. As a director, Crystal was nominated for both an Emmy and a Directors Guild Award for his direction of the 2001 HBO movie “61*.” In addition to hosting the Oscars nine times—most recently in 2012—Crystal has also hosted the GRAMMY Awards three times. His work as a host, writer, and producer on the televised awards shows has earned him 14 Emmy nominations and five wins. Crystal won a sixth Emmy for his 1989 HBO comedy special, “Billy Crystal: Midnight Train to Moscow.” The recipient of the 2007 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Crystal has written five books, including “Absolutely Mahvelous” (1986), “700 Sundays” (2005) and two children’s books, “I Already Know I Love You” (2004) and “Grandpa’s Little One” (2006). Crystal co-wrote, produced, and starred alongside Kevin Kline and Annette Bening in “Have a Nice Day,” a play that was recorded live at The Minetta Lane Theatre. It was released on Audible on November 2nd, 2018 and became an instant best-seller. In 2013, he wrote the New York Times best-selling memoir “Still Foolin’ ‘Em: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys?” Crystal offers his heartfelt and humorous observations on aging. The audiobook version debuted at number one on iTunes and was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Spoken Word Album and won the Audiobook of the Year at the 2014 Audies Gala. Crystal made his Broadway debut in 2004 with the original production of his one-man show “700 Sundays,” for which he won a Tony Award. The Broadway production was taped in front of a live audience for an HBO special that aired in April of 2014, which garnered 4 Emmy Nominations and was released on DVD that fall. Next on the horizon, Crystal is developing a Broadway musical adaption of the 1992 classic film “Mr. Saturday Night.” The Critics Choice Association is proud to present Billy Crystal with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his massive contribution to the entertainment universe.

HALLE BERRY SeeHer Award

SEEHER AWARD

HALLE BERRY We know her as an Academy Award-winning actress whose work spans an array of genres across film and TV, and now also as a successful director who recently made her feature debut. Tonight we celebrate Halle Berry not only for her exceptional career but her commitment as she continues to break down barriers and inspire women around the world. We honor Halle Berry as the recipient of our prestigious prize, the Critics Choice SeeHer Award. It was created to recognize an individual who has contributed to the SeeHer movement’s goal of increasing the accurate portrayal of women and girls in media. Her fierce performance in Monster’s Ball garnered Berry an Oscar for Best Actress, making her the first Black woman to receive that award and becoming even more of a role model for Black women and girls who saw themselves in her, and aspired to her level of accomplishment. She also has an Emmy, two SAG awards, a Berlin Silver Bear, as well as six NAACP Image Awards. Berry’s diverse array of roles range from her first co-starring role in “Strictly Business” to her heartfelt passion project, the biopic “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,” to her portrayal of Storm in the “X-Men” franchise. Her movie “Bruised,” which she directed and also took on the leading role, hit Netflix’s coveted #1 spot in the U.S. during its first week and was #2 globally. Berry has also worked as a philanthropist with a range of organizations focusing on women, children and underserved communities. She is an active supporter and chair member of the Jenesse Center in Los Angeles, which assists victims of domestic violence. Over the years she has directly participated in the efforts of the Watch Hunger Stop campaign, the United Nations World Food Programme, and the Diabetes Aware Campaign, and has supported Revlon Run/Walk, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Afghanistan Relief Organization, Stand Up to Cancer, Love Our Children USA, Clothes Off Our Back, and Black Lives Matter. The SeeHer Award recognizes a woman who embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement, to push boundaries on changing stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape. SeeHer is spearheaded by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA). The movement launched in 2016 and supports the improvement of how women and girls are portrayed in programming and advertising. Previous award recipients are Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, Claire Foy, Kristen Bell, and Zendaya. If a girl can see herself reflected in the media, she can be her real self. We are delighted to honor Halle Berry with the Critics Choice SeeHer Award for being a powerful voice for change and for her trailblazing portrayal of strong women.
