Year 9 Homework

Year 9 Homework

Introduction Dear Parents/Carers and Students Following positive feedback regarding the homework booklet from last year, we can now provide you with the Year 9 homework booklet explaining details of subject tasks for the autumn term 2014. Research has shown that students who support their in-school learning with regular homework tasks are more likely to reach their full potential and will make the most significant progress gains. We believe that the role of parents/carers is central to this process and ask that they encourage, engage in and monitor their child’s homework so that they can develop organisation and independent learning skills to support their academic studies. Please be aware that it is not possible to provide a list of precise dates for every homework task. However, it is our intention that the booklet will provide the basis for discussion and regular dialogue between parents/carers, students and teachers. It provides advance notice of the tasks and activities which will be used to support and extend learning at school. In this booklet you will find:   

A helpful hints and advice page for parents The homework timetable Individual subject pages with aims for homework and where necessary, key deadline dates

A separate booklet is provided for each year group in Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9).

Mr J Kellett Assistant Headteacher

Year 9 Homework

How to support as a parent 1. Support your child to develop a daily routine after school, setting aside time for homework to be completed. 2. As often as possible, sit with your child to plan homework tasks in advance to avoid any last minute rush. 3. Talk to your child about their homework, read through their work or ask them to read it to you. Ask them what they have learnt - you may have an interest or an experience which can help with a particular task. 4. Provide a place at home where homework can be completed, away from distractions such as television or personal devices etc. 5. Remain positive and supportive about the process, offer encouragement wherever possible. 6. Encourage good presentation and advise your child to proof read their work when completed. 7. When carrying out a research task, support your child to use the Internet and also to use the public library for resources. 8. Encourage your child to make use of the after school homework club, Monday to Thursday 3.15- 4.30. 9. Use your child’s planner to monitor homework is being set and to communicate with teachers about homework tasks if you have further questions. 10. Use the email system to make contact with subject leaders if you have specific questions about homework. Guidelines Year 9 students can expect to receive a maximum of 2 subjects per night with individual tasks averaging 30-45 minutes to complete. Some tasks may be set as a longer term project and will take several sessions to complete. A copy of this booklet and the published timetable can be found on the school website at www.grainville.sch.je Parents are encouraged to visit the website regularly for information. Students will find support materials on the website through the VLE. Useful Websites www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize www.linguascope.com

Types of Homework

Music and art will set project based homework which matches the curriculum content. Information Technology will set half termly projects – details of content and deadline can be found on the VLE. Humanities consists of 3 subjects, history, geography and religious studies. Each subject will set two Humanities homework a week and this will depend on what day each student has each subject. Design Technology – students will receive a design technology homework and either food or textiles homework. Modern Foreign Languages will only be set once a week depending on which day the student has these subjects.

30 – 45 minutes per subject. The school believes that homework is central to the learning process. It aids coverage of the curriculum and can help raise achievement. Homework improves students’ study skills, independence in learning and consolidates and extends the work covered in the classroom. It also enables staff to check that students have understood the work. Homework also provides a foundation for successful independent life long learning. Assessment of homework will form an important part of the overall assessment recording and reporting policy. Homework will take a variety of forms and will reflect the differences between subjects and the topics being studied at any one time. It is seen as extending and enriching classroom activities and not just for the purpose of finishing class work. Types of homework might include; research, drafting, worksheets, sketching, drawing, designing, vocabulary, writing and reading, model making, simple experiments, revision, set questions, investigations and extended pieces of work. Please acknowledge that access to reference materials may vary from student to student. If homework is set as a termly project please ensure that this is recorded in the planner so that parents and form tutors can see that homework has been set.
