MONTEM LEISURE CENTRE

OPEN DAY A SUCCESS Following its recent £500k refurbishment, the local community was invited to Montem Leisure Centre for an open day on Saturday 22nd February to have a look around and rediscover what is available at the centre. Visitors were able to take part in a number of free classes, which included, Dance Energy, Zumba Sentao and Body Blitz, as well as having a free FeelGood Factory trial. To give the day a real family feel, there were also free activities for the younger visitors including an obstacle challenge, jungle run and a bouncy castle. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone that attended and gave those who had maybe not used the centre for a while the chance to see how the venue has changed and the new facilities and classes that are now on offer.

WINTER GAMES ICE GALA AT ABSOLUTELY ICE In celebration of the recent Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Absolutely Ice held a charity Winter Games Ice Gala on Wednesday 19th February raising £317 for local group SPICE (Special People on Ice). The gala featured solo and group performances from some of Slough’s top ice-skating talent. Once the show had ended, the audience was invited to take to the ice for a free skating session. As Absolutely Ice’s coaches are all NISA (National Ice Skating Association) approved, they are encouraging those that were inspired by Sochi 2014 to take up ice-skating to get in contact and learn using the Skate UK training programme.

HOW CAN ABSOLUTELY LEISURE HELP YOU? Absolutely Leisure is calling out to groups in Slough, Bracknell, Basingstoke and Maidenhead to come forward and let them know of any jobs that staff members can help them with. As part of the company’s charitable objectives, the Absolutely Leisure Community Projects team is looking to volunteer at some of the fantastic local organisations and could help with gardening at a care home, do some painting for a charity or clean windows at a local school. Whatever the project, the team is asking schools, community groups and charities to get in contact by emailing Will Cheeld - w.cheeld@absolutely-group.co.uk.

MONTEM STAFF RAISE IN EXCESS OF £550 FOR CHARITY

KARTING ACADEMY LAUNCHES IN MAIDENHEAD

Synergy Gym staff at Montem Leisure Centre raised £560 for Greyhounds For You in memory of much loved former colleague, Roy Anderson.

Absolutely Karting, launched their Karting Academy on Sunday 19th January giving expert tuition to future Jenson Buttons or Lewis Hamiltons.

Roy, who sadly passed away four years ago at the age of 67, worked as a fitness consultant at Synergy Gym. As someone who never travelled and didn’t own a passport, staff and customers took turns on cross trainers, fitness bikes and treadmills, accumulating enough miles to have sent Roy on a trip around the world!

Open to 8 to 13-year-olds, those taking part received instruction from trained professionals about the dynamics of the karts, race craft, advanced techniques and the skills needed to improve speed.

Greyhounds For You have been rehoming retired Greyhounds since 1999.

At the end of the course, students were given an Absolutely Karting Licence, which enables them to race competitively against each other. Students received tuition every Sunday for six-weeks and were given a complimentary Karting helmet and an Absolutely Karting Licence once the course was complete. Due to its success, a second Karting Academy is currently taking place.

INAUGURAL SWIMMING GALA AT LANGLEY Langley Leisure Centre hosted its first ever school swimming gala on Friday 29th November when four local schools competed against each other in a number of different races.

Langley Hall Primary Academy, were the overall winners of the competition, with Holy Family Catholic School in second place and Parlaunt Park Primary School in third.

St Bernard’s Prep School students also took part in 25 metre, 50 metre, 100 metre and relay races. Trophies and medals were awarded to those placing first, second and third in each race.
