Rescue Graham Fire Rescue firefighters use the Jaws of Life to remove Robert Patton, 66, of Sanger from his vehicle. Patton was driving east on Highway 380 at about 1:40 p.m. Friday when he rear-ended a red Dodge dually driven by Jonathan Newland of Newcastle, who was turning into Clear Fork where he is employed. Trooper Terry Lockridge said Patton was eating a bag of chips when he looked up and hit Newland. Patton received injuries to his left leg and was transported from the scene by Air Evac to John Peter Smith Hospital. (Photos by Cherry Rushin)

Four-fifths of local provisional ballots rejected BY CHERRY RUSHIN newsdesk@grahamleader.com The provisional ballots have been processed and one out of five were counted. Young County Elections Clerk Wes Hurford said, for the Nov. 6 General Election there were 50 provisional ballots and 10 counted. He said the reasons a provisional ballot is determined to be rejected vary. “There were things like they weren’t registered to vote or they were registered to vote and had been sent numerous items in the mail to confirm their address or change their address,” Hurford said. “Some of them were out of county, and they were current in other counties, which means they could have voted a limited ballot with us, but

chose to vote provisional, which doesn’t count if you’re registered in another county.” But the majority of Young County provisional ballot voters, about 90 percent, according to Hurford, were people who simply were not registered to vote. He said in order for voters to ensure they stay on the rolls, it’s important that the voter registrar has their current information. “When someone moves, it doesn’t automatically update with us, so they have to provide a current address,” Hurford said. “ We’re talking a couple of years of things sent out before we take them off the list.” Young County Voter Registrar Linda Boyle said a mass mail out See BALLOTS, Page 2A

The 18th annual Toys for Tots Campaign has begun, and boxes all over town are ready to accept Christmas gifts for needy children. Drop boxes are placed in various locations around town to collect new, unwrapped toys to be distributed to needy children in Young County. “Boxes are at the fire department and Walmart; there’s a box at Hysmith, at the schools, at the

chamber, the banks and the paper,” said Bernie O’Dell, Young County Toys for Tots coordinator. Those who prefer to donate money rather than toys may put donations in collection jars around town. To send a donation by check, mail the donation to Bernie O’Dell, Young County Toys for Tots Coordinator, P.O. Box 1775, Graham, TX 76450. Make the check payable to “Marine Toys for Tots.” See TOYS, Page 2A

“The thing about Toys for Tots, we just want no child to go without a toy on Christmas day,” O’Dell said. “Marines have always felt that every child should have a Christmas.” Last year 1,600 children in Young Country received three gifts apiece. “I don’t see the need any smaller than what it was last year,” said O’Dell. “I just heard that Angel Tree is doing 350plus this year, and that’s the most they’ve ever done. Here in Graham, we’ve been doing this for 18 years. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Everybody in Graham just gives beyond measure to make sure

our kids get to have a merry Christmas.” Marines have been providing toys to needy children since 1947. All cash donations received are sent to the Toys for Tots Foundation and placed in the Young County account. Funds are used to purchase toys for children in Young County. All toys received, both those donated locally and those received from the foundation, stay in Young County. Those wishing to apply for toys should pick up an application located at the Graham Fire Department, Hysmith’s Automotive, The Graham Leader or the Graham Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, a copy of the

form is printed on the Education Page (Page 5B) of today’s Graham Leader. Fill in the application and mail it to the designated address by Tuesday, Dec. 11, for processing. Toys will be distributed from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1618 Highway 380 Bypass. “Faith Lutheran Church has been so gracious to have us use their place for the last three years; 9-W Rentals gives us a place to store the toys that aren’t used; and Bailey Auto Plaza is having the drive-in movie and entertainment for the kids,” O’Dell said. “All those donations will go to help the kids here in Young County.” Those who pick up gifts

must sign for them. No deliveries will be made. Olney residents may pick up applications at Olney Elementary School in the principal’s office, 801 W. Hamilton St. The Olney deadline for receiving applications is Friday, Dec. 7. Toys will be distributed between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Olney Fire Station, 100 E. Hamilton St. Again, no deliveries will be made. For more information about the Toys for Tots progam, call Bernie O’Dell at (940) 5493944 or 550-5711. of voter registration cards occurs every two years. “The cards that come back to us; we put them on suspense,” Boyle said. “Then we send them a letter of confirmation, and they’re supposed to contact us and update the record, so they stay on suspense until their record is updated.” Voters are purged when they have gone through two general elections for state and county offices without updates, according to the Texas Election Code. Provisional ballots are processed by Boyle. “They decide in Nancy Thomas’ (tax assessor and collector) office what is acceptable and what isn’t,” Hurford said. “Then the votes come back to us, and we factor the votes that are accepted by the registrar into the vote count.” The provisional ballots were determined by Nov. 16 in Young County. Hurford said larger counties take longer. “It’s about normal for us. No new items popped out that we had to resolve or anything,” he said.

they had so much to play,” she said. Clark, also the musical arranger for all the Dukes’ recordings, said the band members have a huge repertoire of songs — everything from gospel to New Orleans funeral music. “We have memorized enough to play 10 sets of music for concerts,” Clark said. They get lots of practice on the Natchez, the only steamboat of its kind left in America that provides daily cruises for tourists. “We regularly play on the riverboat and are the official band for the Natchez,” he said. “It’s the only steamboat left in America that runs on steam and has paddle wheels. It also has a fully operational calliope.” The band leader and trumpeter has earned praise from none other than Pete Fountain, who referred to him as a “great player with a warm New Orleans jazz style.” Besides Fountain, Clark has also worked with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Clarence Brown and Lee Greenwood.

It was a Tuesday night in Graham, Texas, but inside Memorial Auditorium, the Dukes of Dixieland were conjuring up the best memories of New Orleans. Indeed, it didn’t take much imagination to feel as if you were walking in the French Quarter, jazz drifting from open doors. The Dukes, who came to Graham as part of the Graham Concert Association’s concert series, have the distinction of being the oldest continuing Dixieland band in the U..S. The Dukes arrived in Graham just after dark, but it was light enough for the band to spot a herd of longhorns. They had no trouble understanding North Texas drawls because most members had lazy Southern accents of their own. “We’ve played in several towns in Texas, in Paris, Texas, Los Colinas and other towns. We really like the acoustics in this auditorium — I don’t think we’ll need any amplifiers,” said the friendly band leader Kevin Clark after they warmed up. “I’m so impressed by the renovation — it’s beautiful.” There were plenty of sur-

EDITORIAL We lost the lottery, not our dreams Thursday morning, quite a few Americans woke up less wealthy than they’d dreamed of being. “Lottery fever” gripped the country during the past week, leading to a record-high Powerball jackpot for Wednesday night’s drawing. An estimated 189 million tickets were sold for the lottery, and two tickets — one in Arizona and one in Missouri — matched the numbers to win the $587.6 million. If the winners chose the immediate cash payment option, according to reports, they will receive more than $192 million each, before taxes, which will cost them about 30 percent of their winnings. Across the country, almost nine million tickets won a somewhat smaller amount. In Texas, 650,366 tickets matched enough numbers to win from $4 to $1 million. In fact, four Texas tickets won their holders the $1 million second prize. Wednesday afternoon, the tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 per minute nationwide. As ticket after ticket printed out, the dreams got higher. Some people dreamed of getting out of debt or quitting an undesirable job; others wanted to use the money to do good in the world. Most had no real idea what they would do with millions and millions of dollars, but they had fun speculating about it for a few hours. And, now, it’s all over. The Powerball jackpot is back down to a paltry $40 million for Saturday’s drawing, and most of the ticket buyers are back to living in reality. Sure, $2 is a small price to pay for the chance of that dream coming true. But, it’s too much to pay if you can’t handle the letdown of not winning. The trick is to not let the lottery determine the direction your life is going to take. Instead, use the lottery dream to help you determine where you should take your life. Analyze those dreams. What would you have done if you had won? After the new house and the new car and a few vacations, what would you have done day-to-day? Is it something you can make happen anyway? Every day, people who have not won the lottery go back to college, start a new business, organize a charity, donate to their church, set up a scholarship fund... With those dreams fresh on your mind, now is the time to think about what you really want to achieve. Before we know it, December will be over and we’ll be facing the new year, making resolutions and looking forward to the future. Let’s keep up the momentum and fulfill those dreams.

Knowing when tradition counts I began my second year in Graham this week by catching my second Graham Stroll and Lighted Christmas Parade on Thursday evening, followed by the community pep rally. Pardon the gushing, but I think this event is among the finest pieces of Americana to remain in serviceable condition in this country. It is spectacular in its simplicity. This year’s theme was, “Christmas through a Child’s Eyes.” I’m sure the planners were thinking of the many hundreds of youngsters who watched the parade. I’m probably embarrassing myself to admit this activity takes me back to my own childhood. And I watched this parade through those eyes. I’m well-traveled, and I say to Graham, “You don’t know what you’ve got here. It may seem normal and routine to you, but it has gone by the wayside in most American cities and towns.” It begins with Old Glory and the state flag. Here, parade-viewers stand, they remove their hats, they salute traditionally or with their hands over their hearts. The patriotism reflected in these actions does not happen everywhere else. Next comes the vintage police cruiser. It’s a cool, old car to children today,

WEEK’S END BY ROBB KRECKLOW but it takes me back to simpler times and friendly places. To black and white television, respect for authority, homes and families. Bring on the floats (thank you, sponsors), bring on the horses, bring on the classic cars and trucks and the new ones, too, bring on the football team and the cheerleaders; bring it all, Graham. I watched the young athletes riding the fire trucks, and I thought to myself, “Every other city in America has killed that practice out of fear” – the fear of liability. I suppose it is true. One young person falling from that vehicle and the succeeding lawsuit will kill that tradition in Graham. I like that we’re bold here and we hold onto important traditions for cultural reasons. I assume we’re not oblivious to risk, but we’re not going to run away from tradition because of it. The stroll itself is another example.

I’ve lived in a community where retailers lock up their doors before and during a parade. They don’t want to be bothered by a lot of revelers looking for freebies and not buying something right now. As one store owner told me, “I also don’t like a bunch of strangers using my bathroom.” That’s hardly a recipe for hometown, consumer loyalty. I’m far from a “good old days” dreamer though. There are many, many things I enjoy and respect about new technology, fitness and nutrition, modern medicine, and less restrictive fashion. I’m also a person who thinks we often view life too black and white, up or down, all or none. That’s why I like to see communities preserve their cultural and historical traditions. A community without closely held traditions has no roots. It is a place to live, but not home; a place to work, but without career or calling; a place to play, but transient in memories. So, happy holidays, Graham; blessings, Young County. Let’s continue to honor the old ways and celebrate the new, but always – always – with our priorities and propers in order. I’ll let you pick up the narrative from here.

Oil boom days in Breckenridge Everything changed fast during oil boom days in North Texas. Nowhere was that more true than Breckenridge. The big oil boom hit Breckenridge in 1920. The whole climate of the quiet town founded by ranchers changed practically overnight. For a while, an endless stream of men converged on the town: drillers, tool dressers and roustabouts headed for new wells. And added to those, the list goes on and on -- drilling contractors, lease men, land men and oil scouts for the companies, plus people of every other profession, it seems. They flocked to a town that, like the gold-mining camps of California, promised the chance to get rich quick. The fortune seekers threw up tents and shacks in the classic oil boom tradition. Sunday in the 1920s was a big day in Breckenridge, but not because of church services. Most of the wells shut down for the weekend payroll. Nothing but merchandise stores closed for the day, and the brothels of the city did a land office business. Hoards of gamblers and liquor sellers also moved in town to set up shop. From late Saturday night to early Monday morning, the streets of the town were packed with weaving men. A conservative estimate placed the population in January 1920 at 1,500. Just one year later, it had soared to 30,000. Some 10,000 people poured into the town in one month, recorded the city’s chamber of commerce. Before

NORTH TEXAS TALES BY GAY SCHLITTLER STORMS the original citizens realized what was happening, the town had grown to many thousands. “It was a mighty rough place for a while,” wrote one journalist, “as such places are, and without modern conveniences. Disastrous fires threatened the entire town on several occasions.” Some of the neighboring towns refused permits to drill within the city limits, but Breckenridge allowed it. An estimated 200 oil wells inside the city limits created constant fire hazards. A plan was devised so that owners within a block could pool their interests in city oil in the lots making up a block. The block was offered to interested people who wanted to drill, and the property holders shared equally in royalties. Small companies from all over the U.S. took over the leases, drilled and had amazing success. A 1929 Dallas News article said that “not one well in this two and a half miles (city limits after incorporation) has been drilled that was not proved to be a fine producer. In the town itself, I am informed, there are 175 wells completed

and being drilled and not one dry hole has yet been encountered.” Jail records confirm the abrupt social change and crime triggered by the oil boom. In 1892, only two prisoners stayed in the jail the entire year. The original old rock jail had served the town for more than 40 years, but the small jail could not contain the soaring criminal population. When the new jail was built in 1927, it was constructed just in time. One old timer commented that the “old jail was used to store cotton until ‘these people came,’ and then it was worn out in five years.” On the positive side, the oil boom brought the first passenger train, which arrived July 2, 1920. The train operated over the Ranger, Wichita Falls and Fort Worth Railway. Later, Breckenridge was connected to Olney and Graham by rail, giving a continuous line to Wichita Falls. Because the dirt roads in those days were practically impassable, the railroad did a huge business. But by 1929, railway operations were restricted almost entirely to handling freight — mostly petroleum products. A motor bus line called the West Texas coaches handled most passenger traffic, and travelers could only leave Breckenridge by bus. After oil production slowed, the town lost most of its population, even though it held its place as a commercial and oil production center for many years.

Apparently, if you don’t pay taxes, ‘they’ come after you I’ve been trying to figure out how to keep from paying taxes this year, but after reading some journals by prominent tax preparers’ associations, I’m pretty sure they can make me sorry if I don’t. “They” being the government. I know, some people don’t have to pay, and I’d really like to join that group, but I’d just as soon “they” not come and take away my stuff, my car, my clothing and my house. So I guess I’m going to have to pay. From everything I’ve read … THEY MEAN IT. I’ve come up with a few options. First, I need to have some more children. Those people who have a house full of kids get to write off

a lot of income. They get to add an exemption for every one of those little buggers. That is until they get too old. We had kids once, and we used those exemptions. But they got grown up, and went away, taking their exemptions with them. Ungrateful … that’s all I have to say. Without kids, you don’t get a child tax credit, childcare credit, or even education credits. “They” require proof that those children live with you or that you are paying their bills. What is this world coming to when the government of the US of A will not take your word for it? Somehow, when a kid gets to be 35, is married and has kids of her own, “they” don’t

BETH BEGGS think her mother should be able to count her any more. I’ve thought of adopting a few, but that would mean starting over with potty training, Girl Scouts, and eighth-grade dances … maybe not. A $3,000 credit might not be worth it … No, I’d need about six kids, and that would mean adding on to the house and maybe even getting another job … Never mind.

Maybe I should invest in something that loses money. I have friends who have had oil wells, beauty shops, restaurants, and cows. They have a lot of write-offs, but I’m not sure it’s worth it. What if I made money at it? … “They’d” want some. There are always charitable donations. I could give away a lot of my old clothes. I’ve got several boxes of really cute size 14 pedal-pushers. I bought them that summer I joined that weight-loss club and bought my meals ready-to-heat-and-nibble. I think I was size 14 only long enough to get to the mall and buy everything that fit. On the way home I stopped at Braum’s and blew the whole

thing. I could only write off about $75 worth … since you get about 10 cents a pair. I don’t have much money to give to the church (in case the preacher is reading this), and Salvation Army just wants me to ring a bell. So getting enough donations, property taxes and medical miles to meet the standard deduction is impossible. The alternative to paying taxes is to not make any money … or lie … and I think the punishment for lying to the government is rough. Not only do “they” get your stuff, it might mess up some plans for the big “tax holiday in the sky.” Maybe “they” have a payment plan.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I enjoyed the actions and statements read and heard on the referendum we had on liquor sales in Graham. People can see, touch and feel this subject. We need discussions like this in all things to get the best possible results for ourselves. And if a mistake is made it can be corrected. Now what about Smart Meters? You can’t see, touch or feel what they can or could do to us. A flier was left informing us that ONCOR would be installing them. I don’t remember asking for one. In fact I don’t want one. I worked for nine years in the

USAF with pulsed radiation emitting devices. And a Smart Meter is bad for our health. Very bad. Don’t let any one tell you it is not. Radiation is cumulative in your body and can cause cancers, DNA problems and even death. Even low level radiation is harmful. I really don’t care to see them installed within two miles of my home. These Smart Meters, if installed, invade our privacy (the Fourth Amendment). They can be used to control us. They will cost more. They have been known to catch fire and blow up. They are part of ICLEI from Agenda 21 of the United Nations. My energy provider is

TXU Energy not ONCOR. I have not agreed to an installation of a “Smart Meter.” My home is secured and any tampering with a lock or locks is considered property damage as well as breaking and entering. Tremendous amounts of profits are involved here. There is no law, state or federal, that says we have to have “Smart Meters.” You want to really see the quality of life change in Graham. Install these rascals and you will. I would recommend the city council outlaw Smart Meters immediately. Carl Buschmann Graham

We believe every youth in this area who would like to participate in football should have the chance. Equipment is provided to most participants in the league. We try to keep our sign-up fees low to encourage participation. This can, however, put a strain on our budget. The league could not survive without donations. God has blessed our community with many generous people. We would like to thank the following people and businesses for their support of Graham Little League Football. Gold sponsors: Taco Casa, S.B Street Operating, Elton Montgomery, Graham Medical Associates, Mercer Company and Vicki Palmour Consulting.

FSA program allows for earlier loans Young County USDA Farm Service Agency Executive Director Jeannine P. Wendel announced that special provisions will made to the FSA emergency loan program and to the Risk Management Agency federal crop insurance program in order to provide greater flexibility for livestock producers facing forage and feed shortages as a result of drought. Tom Vilsack, secretary, announced that modifications will be made to the emergency loan program allowing them to be made earlier in the season. In the past, emergency loan eligibility was determined after the production cycle. Producers will no longer have to wait until the end of the production cycle to obtain a loan. This change will support producers who currently need assistance to help offset high production costs. Vilsack also announced that a special provision will be made to the federal crop insurance program through RMA that will allow producers to hay or graze cover crops without forfeiting crop insurance eligibility on planted 2013 spring crops. This change is beneficial to livestock producers making forage and feed available this fall and winter. However, before making any plans to plant crop cover, producers should consult with their insurance agent, according to RMA. For information regarding special provisions to the emergency loan program, please contact the Young County FSA office at (940) 549-6523 ext. 2 or visit www. fsa.usda.gov.

Dukes Continued from Page 3A At least two former Graham High School jazz band members were in the audience. Although the two played decades apart, they said the concert brought back lots of memories. “I just love jazz music,” said Harry McNeely, a 1944 GHS jazz band member. “We used to play at rodeo dances and for dances they held on the stage of Memorial Auditorium.” “These guys are accomplished musicians,” said Wesley Lasater, who played trumpet in GHS jazz band. “The years I played in jazz band, we did concerts and played for proms.” One huge surprise came as the Dukes were warming up before the concert. People heard what sounded like the unmistakable voice of Satchmo himself (Louis Armstrong). Turns out that 20-something bass player Alan Broome had learned to sing like an “old black man,” as he described his voice. He likes to do impressions, as well as play the bass fiddle and sing solos in a low, gravely style that sounds like he’s ruining his young voice. “I have to warm up first. It doesn’t hurt my throat, but it’s really hard to sing this way,” he said. His Irish flat cap partially covering his face, Broome was

Scott Obernschain played and sang New Orleans jazz like the Big Easy native he is during the GCA’s program at Graham Memorial Auditorium. A musical child prodigy, the pianist began playing classical music at 4, but began playing by ear and has played Dixieland jazz since high school. (Photo by Gay Storms) the craziest-moving musician in the band — he was a lot of fun to watch. Jazz pianist Scott Obernaschain, who began playing classical music at age 4, learned to play by ear at the suggestion of his grandparents. They wanted to hear music from their era, so he began playing popular music by ear. By the time he was in high school, he was playing Dixieland. If the audience was seated where they could watch

his hands sailing over the keyboard, they were surely amazed. Among his many skills was sitting perfectly still, relaxed and smiling. While his hand and fingers were doing all the moving. His most amazing move was when he flicked his left wrist like a seasoned card dealer to execute the bass notes. “It’s just my technique — I didn’t learn it from anybody,” he said, laughing.” The young man said that jazz fills most of his waking

hours but that he was missing his new baby son, who was only a week old. He set the momentum and fast beat throughout most of the songs. The Dukes’ big distinction is that in 1975 they began playing with symphonic orchestras. “We enjoyed playing with the Boston Pops, but we’ll play just as good tonight as we did with them,” the band leader said. “We’ll be recording a special PBS show Friday in honor of Louis Armstrong with songs like ‘Holiday in New Orleans’ and ‘Dat You, Santa?’” Many in the audience were bowled over by the Dukes’ performance. ““I enjoy having them up here,” said Louis Pitcock Jr. “We don’t have to go New Orleans to hear outstanding jazz.” Those who loved the concert will want to check out their new website at DukesofDixieland.com. “Fans can sign on and subscribe,” Clark said. “We’ll send them free some of the music we’re doing for the PBS special, Christmas tunes — not ‘Jingle Bells,’” he said, laughing. The Dukes gave an open invitation to visit them on the river boat while in New Orleans. “We hope to see you while we’re playing on the Natchez,” he said. “We’d love to see you again.”

Get an accurate assessment of your percentage of body fat and lean mass, and then use this as a starting point to get you on track for success. Body Fat Test is a mobile body composition testing clinic that will provide you with a four-page printout which shows you where you are, where you should be and what it will take to get there. You will have a realistic baseline to establish your fitness goals. Body composition testing is exciting and motivating because you will track your gains in muscle mass while decreasing your body fat – this is not recognized on a bathroom scale and can frustrate fitness enthusiasts and those trying to improve their health through diet and exercise. The test takes only a few moments during which you will be totally submerged in filtered, comfortably warm water. You will have privacy during the entire test. Eating within 2 hours before the test may affect your results by up to 1 1/2%. Therefore, we advise you not to eat within two hours before the test. Working out and drinking water is okay. You should try to use the restroom and take a shower if possible.

8 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29

Advanced registration is strongly encouraged to reserve your time. Cost is $45. Bring your bathing suit and a towel – changing rooms are available in the clinic. See you there! www.BodyFatTest.com

Walls and Hearne lead the way for Steers BY TRAVIS LISLE sports@grahamleader.com Spur Hearne and Hunter Walls are leading the Steers defense in total tackles by a lot. Hearne has 110 tackles, while Walls has 97, which leads the next defensive tackler by 31 tackles. Hearne, a junior, and Walls, a senior had landmark games against Glen Rose last Friday, combining for 32 tackles. “We play our butts off every week that we can,” Walls said. Much of the duo’s success, and the success of the Graham Steers defense as a whole, is largely due to the preparation in the film room. Defensive coordinator Clay McChristian spends most of his weekend getting film and game plans together for the week ahead. “We study a lot of film,” Hearne said. “It’s probably 75 percent mental,” Walls added. “We never go into games unprepared. We’ve watched so much film. It’s like cheating, almost, because we know their plays before they run them.” As for the role of linebackers in the defense, Hearne says that their role is pretty simple. “We fill gaps,” he said. “We fly to the football, and hopefully light somebody up. We want to punish them every play.” Setting a physical tone in the game is a role that the two have become familiar with. It is their job to make sure the opposing offense knows that nothing will come easy. “Linebackers can kind of set the tone for the defense,” Walls said. Despite having a marquee day in Springtown against the Glen Rose Tigers in the area championship, Hearne and Walls say they still have plenty to work on.

“You’re never as good as you thought you were, and you’re never as bad as you thought you were,” Hearne said. “We watched film, and it looked like we played really good, but there were still things to be fixed.” One of the things that has made the Steers defense so exceptional is their ability to not give up a lot of rushing yards. Against Burkburnett, the Steers held the Bulldogs to -7 yards on the ground in the first half. They followed that up by only allowing 26 first-half rushing yards against the Tigers. “I liked how we stopped the run,” Walls said. “Linebacker is really a run-first position. We pride ourselves in not letting teams pound the ball on us. They’re not going to run the ball down our throat.” Another big part of what Hearne and Walls do is helping the team play as one unit. Whether it be getting the plays in and communicating with their fellow defenders or just keeping the camaraderie at a high level, these two have taken great strides in the unity of the defense. “We’ve got the brotherhood par t of it down,” Hearne said. “The family part of the game is there this year. We decided before two-a-days that this would be a special year for us. We’re always together.” With 11 players all striving for one goal, being united and having everyone do their individual job is key. “I think one of the biggest things that stems from that is knowing that the person across from me is going to do his part,” Walls said. “I know that everyone is going to do their part. That makes it easy to play because you don’t have to worry about anyone else, or feel like you have to help them out.”

Gang tackle Hunter Walls and Spur Hearne wrap up Glen Rose’s top receiver in the area championship last Friday. Walls and Hearne combined for 32 tackles in their marquee game.

Signing day Hyedi Viehmann signed with Newman University Monday in the Graham High School library. Back row left to right, Graham athletic director Kenny Davidson, Graham High School principal Robert Loomis, her father Ty Viehmann, Lady Blues softball coach Jimmy Hogan, assistant coach Shannon Weaver. (Photo by Mallie Springer)

Viehmann signs with Newman University BY TRAVIS LISLE sports@grahamleader.com Hyedi Viehmann, a Graham High School student/athlete, used a recruiting website to assist her in getting a college scholarship. More and more, student/ athletes are using recruitment websites to get noticed. Viehmann used a website called NCSA to get attention from Newman University in Wichita, Kan., which eventually led to a full-ride scholarship and the realization of

her dream. “This is literally all that I’ve wanted since I started playing catcher at the age of 9,” Viehmann said. “I had begun to feel like there was less hope for me with collegiate softball. This came out of nowhere. I hadn’t talked to the school before, but they found me randomly on the internet. It’s like my prayers have been answered. It’s a huge blessing.” With the ability to upload videos that include highlights, workouts and game

footage to the website, recruiters from all over the country have access to the many registered players without leaving the comfort of their desk. This is also a big step for communities like Graham, where young athletes are leaning toward one-sport specialization more and more with hopes of getting some, if not all, of their education paid for. For Viehmann, a two-year varsity starter with a 3.54 GPA, a higher education would have been much

more difficult without the widespread coverage and eventual results that NCSA provided. “I got to the point where I couldn’t exactly turn down a full-ride scholarship,” Viehmann said. “It helps out so much financially, I couldn’t say ‘no.’ The coach told me I could start my freshman year, which is huge.” Though Viehmann loves the game and the position of catcher, her biggest goals are in academia. “Softball is one of my big-

gest passions,” Viehmann said. “I’m probably more passionate about my education than I am about softball, but softball is giving me the chance to get a great education.” As for her studies, the slugging senior looks forward to becoming a mathematician and a veterinarian. “I plan on dual majoring,” she said. “Newman only has Pre-vet, so I will get my mathematics at Newman before transferring to Texas A&M for my veterinarian school.” One of the trials for Viehm-

ann will be the separation from home. Wichita, located 358 miles from Graham, is a long way to move before even seeing the town. Viehmann plans to get a feel for the town this weekend, as she goes to visit her new stomping grounds. “I’m going to visit Newman this weekend, and I’m coming back on Monday,” Viehmann said. “I’ve heard a lot of great things about the campus and the fields. They just re-did the softball field, so it should be pretty great.”

Wilson kills it Joslyn Wilson gets a couple of kills against Iowa Park in a district game. Wilson was a positive leader on a team that struggled, but the senior still made the Academic All-State team. (Photos by David Flynn)

Wilson selected Academic All-State BY TRAVIS LISLE sports@grahamleader.com Joslyn Wilson was selected this week to the Academic All-State volleyball team. The Graham High School senior holds a GPA of 4.193. Wilson made the second team All-District and was a senior leader through a rocky 2012 Lady Blues campaign. “Joslyn’s a hard worker,” Lady Blues head coach Courtney Wright said. “She’s in the top four or five kids in her class. She deserves it. The season didn’t go the way we wanted, but she still came in every day and set a great example. She came in, even when we knew we weren’t going to make the playoffs, and

worked her tail off to get better and lead the team. She’s always positive. She always worked very hard. She’s the kind of kid you want all of your athletes to be like.” Wright knows that ultimately acknowledging a student/ athlete’s accomplishments in the classroom is just as important as the accomplishments on the court. “That’s what we’re here for,” Wright said. “We want to win, but we’re here to get these kids ready for college and the rest of their lives.” As for Wilson, she says that being elected to the academic All-State team makes her feel smart. “It’s cool,” Wison said. “I didn’t have the season I was

hoping for. I didn’t play as many good games that I had hoped for but, this is very cool. It’s not really how I wanted volleyball to end, but it’s a nice thing.” Wilson plans to attend the University of North Texas in Denton to study psychology with a minor in journalism. “I really want to study crime scenes or be a clinical psychologist who provides counseling,” Wilson said. As for volleyball, Wilson will miss the camaraderie involved in high school volleyball. “I’m going to miss playing with my team,” she said. “Despite how the season turned out, I’m really going to miss them.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Start preparing now to make sure you get the credit you’re due for all that effort you put in to get that project off the ground. A new challenge emerges after the 15th. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re still charging full steam ahead on the job -- and that’s fine. But take time to share the joy of preparing for the upcoming holidays with folks you love. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A former detractor resists joining your ranks just yet. Give him or her time to learn more about what you’re doing. Meanwhile, devote more time to friends and family. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to be goaded into a tiff by someone who might be looking for a fight. Remain cool as you make your exit. Be assured that others will rally to your support. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Kudos on getting the well-deserved Lion’s share of the rewards for a job well-done. Now you can take a breather from your workaday duties and spend time with your family. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You enjoy a quick spurt of renewed energy just in time to meet that upcoming deadline. A potentially romantic situation looms. How it develops will be up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch out for distractions that could cause delays and leave you running twice as fast to finish your work by the 15th. Then go ahead and have fun. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might prefer to work on current tasks on your own. But be open to a potentially useful suggestion from someone who admires you and wants to help. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid rushing full gallop into that volunteer project without knowing what’s expected of you. Take things a step at a time as you begin to find your way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: You should begin to feel more comfortable expressing your emotions. This will go a long way in helping you with that personal situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An old friend gives confusing signals. Best advice: Don’t assume that things will necessarily work themselves out. Ask questions and demand straight answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new relationship needs time to develop. Be careful not to let your emotions flood your natural sense of caution. Meanwhile, check out that new job offer. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of right and wrong sometimes causes you to come into conflict with others. But you invariably come out ahead.

The Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, leasing and financing of housing. The law also prohibits discriminatory advertising on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, national origin, mental or physical handicap or marital status. The law covers any potential or actual sale, lease, rental, eviction, price terms, privileges or any service in relation to the sale of or use of housing. The law not only prohibits advertisements which restrict access to housing based on the protected categories, but also prohibits advertisements which indicate a preference for or against a person based on a protected category. In some circumstances, the use of local terminology, symbols or directions to real estate for sale or rent may indicate a discriminatory preference. It is the intent and goal of The Graham Leader for each advertiser who wishes to place an advertisement in The Leader to comply with the Federal Fair Housing Act. Any advertisement which is perceived to contain language contrary to the act will be rejected or changed to remove the offending reference(s). There may be situations where it is not clear whether particular language is objectionable. Such advertisements should be referred to the publisher for consideration and determination. Under certain circumstances, advertisers may claim that because of the nature of the housing being advertised, they are not subject to Fair Housing laws. Such claims are irrelevant for the purpose of considering advertisements for publication in The Graham Leader. Every housing advertisement published in The Graham Leader is subject to all provisions of the Federal Fair Housing Act.
