“They care for me as well as for Walt. In the beginning, when I had worse days than better, they listened to me, comforted me, took the time to let me know I wasn’t the only person in the world going through this.
That’s great, because a lot of people don’t recognize what the parents go through.”

Assume Trauma: We take a universal precaution approach to trauma
Be Kind: When our client is at their worst, we need to be at our best
Teach: We must use our training to teach clients needed skills
Use the Community: Work with local resources to facilitate social connections
Be a Behavior Detective: It is our duty to understand behavioral challenges deeply and functionally
All of this rests on the foundation of “meeting people at their best” – meaning clients’ own interests and skills are the basis for all teaching. This was a core philosophy of Grafton’s founder, Ruth Birch.
Through the use of the Ukeru system, a program based on a core philosophy of Comfort vs. Control® and trauma informed care:
“Grafton has changed our family's life for the better, in just four short months. I cannot speak more highly of the Ukeru system in place, especially as my daughter had been "secluded" for the last three years she had been in [prior placement].”
- Mother of child served in Day School
