Graf Lantz started with two people, a roll of Merino wool felt and a basic idea: to feel good about what we do…and help people feel good about what they buy.

For 15 years, we have been creating timeless objects of curious beauty, giving them purpose for existing, making them with honest materials, and building them to last.

We want everyone to be surrounded by better things and are committed to creating products that last, with high quality as our driving ethos.

We believe in materials that support a future where sustainability means products that have long lives and are part of the natural cycle. Our material musthaves are biodegradable, natural, authentic, innovative, circular, recycled, or upcycled.

Merino Wool Felt — Our Star

There are many kinds of felt. At Graf Lantz, we are only interested in the world’s best kind, Merino wool felt. Being the world’s best felt requires a combination of two specific factors: a singular Bavarian technique and an ultra-fine wool fiber from a specific breed of sheep called Merino. Nature has optimized Merino fibers for thermal protection, water resistance, and antimicrobial properties.

Hand-Dyed Cotton Canvas

Heavy gauge canvas has been a workhorse for centuries. That deserves respect. It also deserves some time off. Our canvas collection is what 24 oz cotton canvas feels like on vacation. The industrial weight 100% cotton canvas is hand dyed, triple-washed to bring out softness, and is extra strong for everyday use.

Alpaca

Cultivated for over 6000 years, Alpaca is one of nature’s most beautiful materials. The fibers are similar in size to our Merino wool, but they are mostly hollow. The air pockets trap heat making Alpaca fiber almost 3 times warmer than sheep or any other kind of wool and almost 7 times stronger. Free of lanolin, it is naturally hypoallergenic.

Vegetable-Tanned Leather

From the moment you meet our vegetable tanned leather, it will begin to change and tell your story. Veg tan leather is always on a journey to find a perfect patina that is unique to you. Nothing ages as gracefully as veg tan leather. We use top quality, completely natural and untreated vegetable tanned leather.

Hemp

We love amazing materials and with roots that span back centuries, Hemp is a marvel. It requires little water to grow, replenishes soil nutrients to help improve soil health, and has a higher carbon storage capability than cotton. It is naturally organic and requires no herbicides or pesticides.

It feeds our brand, our people, and our products.

Our appreciation of natural materials, overlooked and underutilized, derives from our appreciation and closeness to nature. Our founders have always found inspiration and solace in nature—from Holger’s childhood in the Bavarian forests of Germany, to Daniel’s younger years on a farm in Japan’s Hokkaido region, to their time together in Los Angeles and their constant travels abroad. Nature plays a critical role in inspiring their ventures into new design territories, and some of the places dearest to them both are represented in our 2023 assortment.

Mt. Fuji

There’s only one Fuji San. Its unapologetic symmetry and resolute beauty has defined an entire culture. Not just in art and aesthetic, but also in philosophy. When ascending Fuji, as in life, there is not a single right path to the top. There are many. They are all connected. We have only but to choose. In other words, sometimes there’s the right way of doing things. But sometimes there’s your way of doing things. And when you find your own path they usually end up being the same things.

Our newest colors are inspired by Mt. Fuji and the beauty in forging your own path. Rose Quartz showcases the color of cherry blossoms and geode rocks, Haze represents the sky and mountain peak, and Miso, the earth surrounding the mountain and the path to the top. Bavarian Forest

The Bavarian Forest is nature in its most untouched form, where the forest is left to flourish according to its natural cycles. Filled with verdant, towering trees, rolling mountains, deep valleys, and hidden waterfalls, it represents an opportunity to rekindle the purity of an undeveloped Earth. The power of nature to inspire makes the Bavarian Forest a magical landscape to cultivate and create things of beauty.

Our spring and summer seasonal colors are inspired by the lush hues of a wooded forest. Kombu, a deep green, conjures the colors of the tree tops that make up so much of the Bavarian landscape. Ochre, an earthy brown, invokes the nutrient-rich undergrowth that keeps a forest thriving. Together, the color palatte showcases the essential equation for a biophilic masterpiece.

Our Merino Wool Felt Coasters have all the attributes your customers want. They wick moisture, are naturally stain and dirt resistant, and are highly sustainable.

Wool is the most hydrophilic of all natural fibers, absorbing as much as 30% of its weight without feeling wet. Our traditional Bierfilzl ("Beer Felt") are the highest quality German Merino wool felt coasters on the market today.

Merino Wool Felt

What is merino wool felt? Felt is wool. Wool is hair from sheep. It’s that simple. Of the many varieties of wool available, the one we use comes from a specific breed of sheep called merino. Merino wool is unique among all wool varieties and prized for its strength, flexibility and softness. The secret of merino wool is the ultra fine fibers, which allow it 50% more flexibility than traditional, courser wool varieties. Merino fibers are typically much longer, creating density, structure and highly reduced pilling.

Everyday Felt Maintenance

Will the felt start to pill? Surface pilling should not be a problem with the merino wool felt used in our products. The long fibered felt is very dense and pilling complaints are rare. If you do happen to experience minor pilling on the surface or edges of your product, we suggest a few circular passes with a home fabric shaver.

Can felt lose its shape? Under certain wet conditions, the pressure of a heavy or angular object inside the bag may cause the felt to slightly change shape. Running a steamer or iron lightly over the general area can help return the bag to its original form. After a few light passes of 2 to 3 seconds the area should begin to smooth out. Always err on the side of less passes and less heat. A little help with your fingertips to flatten the area never hurts.

Can I dry clean it? Dry cleaning is a great way to refresh your bag season to season. Since most of our styles feature a mix of felt and leather, we highly recommend using a cleaner who specializes in leather products.

Can I machine-wash my felt products? Absolutely not—seriously, don’t do it.

Felt Stain Removal

Wine, Oil, & Food

Step 1: Wet the spot well with a mix of warm water and light detergent until saturated.

Step 2: Massage the stain lightly to break up fibers - wait 2 or 3 minutes.

Step 3: Pat, don’t rub, the area firmly with absorbent paper towel to remove moisture.

Step 4: Repeat 1-3 as necessary till stain visibly lightens.

Step 5: Rinse and repeat until detergent clears.

Step 6: Pat, don’t rub, surface well and lay flat to dry.

Mud

What if I get mud on my bag? The most important thing to do with mud is let it sit and dry (that should be easy enough). Dryness is the key for releasing fine dirt particles. Once dry, slightly beat the felt to knock out the remaining dust as much as possible. Vacuum lightly to finish.

Wait, vacuum? It may seem strange, but it works!

A few tips are: make sure hose attachment is clean; hold the felt securely in place; apply the vacuum with quick up and down motions to the affected area.

Dry Stains

Lint rollers are a best first option for dry stains - a few passes with a good adhesive roller should reduce dry stains significantly and freshen up any felt product.

We recommend doing that anyway with all products, it will get them looking like new.

Water

Great news! Water will not damage felt. In fact, the material is able to wick away large quantities of moisture - which is why our coasters are so popular! Just let it air dry and.

Leather

Vegetable tanned leather is as old as civilization itself and still has no rival. Animal hides are tanned with a mixture of plant based materials such as tree bark, wood, leaves, fruit, and roots. The tannins from these natural materials slowly stabilize the proteins in the hide over a period of weeks and make the leather soft and workable. Since these types of hides only take a thin layer of surface dye and are not pigmented, only A grade hides get to become veg-tan.

Leather Patina: Products made with natural undyed vegetable tanned hides age gracefully and develop a patina with use and wear - turning from a light tan to a beautiful caramel color.

Vegetable tanned leather upkeep: To maintain an even finish, vegetable tanned leather can be treated with a conditioning treatment. To apply, rub a very small amount of the treatment on your item using a clean, dry cloth. Let the conditioner soak in for up to one hour. Use another clean cloth to buff dry. Be aware that the color of the leather will darken slightly after being treated with conditioner.

Canvas

We hand dye our canvas in small batches in LA, they are hand frayed for a relaxed look and trimmed in vegetable-tanned leather.

Cleaning: We recommend treating your bag before use with a fabric protector like Scotch Guard or Fabric Guard for waterproofing and stain proofing.

Spot clean any area that has a set-in stain. Our dyes are strong, start with a standard stain remover per product directions and timing to weaken the stain. Next, with a fine spray bottle or damp cloth, wet the area with a mild detergent solution and massage till the stain lifts. To rinse, apply fresh water and remove it with an absorbent towel repeatedly until the detergent is removed. Air dry.

Product may only be sold at shipping address on this Sales Order, any modification without written permission from Graf Lantz is in violation and may result in termination of seller relationship.

Returns will be accepted for credit/exchange only if there is a damage or manufacturer's error in construction, size or color, or goods not shipped in accordance with the specifications of sale, and then only within 5 days from receipt of merchandise. A return authorization from Graf Lantz is required for return. any other unauthorized returns will not be accepted and will be shipped back at retailer’s expense. Any goods returned for reasons other than damages or production issues will require a swap total of double value.

Custom orders already in production are the customer's financial responsibility and may not be canceled. custom orders are final sale and may not be returned or exchanged.

Should our production be curtailed by unavoidable causes we reserve the right to fill this order in proportion to production.

Except as expressly provided in the warranty provided above, you are purchasing the product “as is” and we disclaim all warranties, expressed or implied, including the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and satisfactory quality.

Late payments shall bear interest at 1% per 30 days, or the maximum legal interest rate, whichever is lower, until paid.

Any claim hereunder shall be construed and interpreted pursuant to the laws of the state of california applicable to agreements made and to be performed entirely therein, and the parties hereto submit and consent to the jurisdiction of the superior court for the county of los angeles, or the united states district court, central district of california located in the county of los angeles. If any action is brought against Graf Lantz to enforce the terms and conditions hereof, Graf Lantz shall be entitled to receive our attorney fees and costs.
