I'm a 4th year architecture student at South Dakota State University looking to learn new techniques, network with people in the field, and improve upon my skills and education. I'm interested in applying my construction background and my architectural education to real-world experience. I've always been motivated and disciplined in my work toward architecture, and I want to gain quality experience toward my goal. I adapt well to almost any work environment, as I am a highly outgoing individual.

I'm active in many extracurricular activities, such as: Vice President of AIAS, Vice President of the Men's Soccer Club, and Student Association - Senator at Large. I always try to keep myself busy and keep my responsibilities in check. By The Sea Shore Instructor: Sean Ervin The final project of the Fall 2023 Semester, a one-week charrette titled “SUNRISE+SUNSET EXPERIENCE,” challenged us to create a captivating space that encapsulates the beauty and significance of sunrises and sunsets through an obser vator y gallar y/studio space.

Recognizing the critical impact of these natural phenomena on mental health and our daily rhythms, the charrette aimed to design an obser vation space for viewing horizons and celestial events. The program included an obser vation space (2,000–5,000 sf) for pure and immer sive sunrise and sunset experiences, a galler y space for rotating ar t displays inspired by the surroundings, and connective components to facilitate access between these spaces.

A key element was to ensure human comfor t without on-site facilities, and the project required thoughtful consideration of storm resistance, given the area’s susceptibility to hurricanes. The use of glass was encouraged to maximize views, minimize wildlife impacts, and allow for easy replacement in case of storm damage.

The design aimed to be resilient yet aesthetically inspiring, making a positive contribution to the environment and ser ving as a source of inspiration to ar tists that use the obser vator y.

The charrette encouraged us to engage in accelerated decisionmaking and focused ef for t, compressing the design process to quickly explore and refine ideas. The final presentation required us to showcase our concepts and convince the studio community that our design was the most wor thy addition to the landscape of Cape Cod. The output could take the form of models, drawings, sketches, paintings, or a combination of media, reflecting both the essence of the place and the individuality of the designer.

Through this project, I learned to navigate the challenges of a truncated design process, balance creativity with practicality, and present a compelling vision within a tight timeframe. The emphasis on community engagement, resilience, and aesthetic impact brightened my under standing of architecture as a medium for expression in architecture with a deadline. Overall, the charrette provided a well rounded experience, testing my ability to synthesize diver se elements into a cohesive and inspiring architectural concept under pressure.

Starting out my design process, I played around with various stacked boxes to get a feel for the simple concept of the design as a good starting point. At the same time, I had been doing research on the surrounding culture. Finding out that it was the first place that the original pilgrim settlers had landed when coming to America. This made me try and find another route since I didn’t think people would want a constant reminder that the natives there were colonised. In this, I was brought to seashells, I started researching what kinds of seashells can be found along the north east coast. I came across clam shells, scallops, Mussels, etc. The shells that actually caught my eye were the moon snail, lettered olive, and oysters. I started combing these shells in various different ways with my box designs in the golden ratio.

In this, I came to the conclusion of putting the gallery space on the first floor and the studio space on the second. The first floor consists of a multitude of offset reinforced precast concrete load bearing walls incased in wood siding, along with I beams painted gold and slitted glazing helping to accentuate sunsets and sunrises. The second floor of the building will still consist of steel and precast concrete but will have much larger windows for sunlight intake. The exterior and interior of the building are covered with various kinds of native wood, such as walnut, cherry, maple, red oak, and heart pine. Doing this allows for easy replacement of the siding and other various parts of the building’s shell since the foundation and walls are made of precast concrete and steel beams. This way of anchorage also adds to its resilience to water, big storms such as hurricanes, and snow. The first floor walls will have slitted windows to help control the natural light as it comes into the space. This allows the artists to use specific lighting techniques to show and portray their work. The second floor will have massive window panels to allow as much light as possible to enter the space and provide a grand view of the sunset and sunrise. On the second floor, there is also a back patio facing the trees for artists to go and continue there art outside, as well as a front patio facing the ocean for the same purpose and a grand view.

Through this process, I came to a point where I could finally start modeling my design. By using Revit to model my building and Rhino to create my terrain and paths, I imported my creation to Lumion, where I created my renders. When creating my renders, I took this opportunity to try out something new and created my sections and floor plans in Lumion.

I was trying out new ways to show light and realism in my plans in an attempt to stand out from my peers during jury day. We had the opportunity to vote on who had the best design. I finished as the first runner up in the class for the design and presentation, as in addition, I had created a fly through of my building to better show circulation and the design process.

My only fallout was that I didn’t add music to my presentation!

Building Studio Spring 2023, has provided me with a comprehensive under standing of the technical, creative, and contextual aspects of architectural design.

Through this cour se, I gained technical skills related to construction, which enabled me to better under stand designing buildings that are structurally sound and safe. I learned about dif ferent materials, joints, and structural systems and how they work together to form a building.

I was taught how to approach design challenges iteratively and discur sively, allowing me to think critically and creatively about design problems and evaluate multiple solutions before arriving at the best one. This has helped me develop my design thinking skills, which I can apply to a range of design challenges beyond architecture.

Collaboration is a key aspect of architecture, and in Building Studio, I learned how to give and receive feedback and work ef fectively in a team. This has helped me develop my communication skills and learn how to work collaboratively with other s.

Building Studio emphasized the impor tance of contextual awareness in design. Through investigating key issues related to the project site and context, I learned how to design buildings that respond to the needs and characteristics of their surroundings. This has helped me create buildings that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also responsive to the broader context in which they exist.

This research project of Fall 2022, aimed to introduce more natural light into the building while maintaining a balanced and comfor table environment. By leveraging the knowledge and skills we acquired in the “Architectural Design and Daylighting” cour se, we were able to approach the project with a deep under standing of the principles and techniques involved in ef fective daylighting design.

One of the key considerations in the project was to avoid overpowering the space with excessive light. This required careful analysis of the existing lighting conditions, under standing the building’s orientation, and considering the needs and preferences of the occupants. By applying the concepts we earned in the cour se, such as solar geometr y and shading strategies, We were able to develop a design solution that maximized the entr y of natural light while preventing glare and maintaining visual comfor t.

Additionally, the cour se emphasized the impor tance of energy ef ficiency in daylighting design. Through the integration of daylighting simulations and energy analysis tools, we were able to evaluate the energy per formance of dif ferent design options. This enabled me to make informed decisions about the selection of glazing materials, shading devices, and control systems, ensuring that the project aligned with sustainability goals and minimized energy consumption.

CUBIC SPACE Instructor: Brian Rex

In the Spring 2021 course, our primary emphasis was on delving into the intricacies of design practice. We crafted form, space, shape, events, parameters, and structure, seamlessly weaving them together to achieve both quantifiable and qualifiable impacts through interactive design exercises. Each day brought forth a cycle of creation, accompanied by reflective sessions that scrutinized the nuanced effects of our varied practices.

This course adopted a theoretical lens, providing a profound exploration of practical aspects. Extensive discussions unfolded regarding the intricate relationships between the realms of practice and theory within our design endeavors. The foundation of the course lay in instilling principles of guided inquiry and fostering a culture of questioning, all expressed through immersive hands-on creations. The studio experiencewas nothing short of a performance, where the medium of expression was the artistry of manual craftsmanship.

In the dynamic structure of this Fall 2023 Research Studio, each phase introduced a fresh per spective as groups evolved. Notably, the final phase saw me collaborating with Josie T imm and Arlyn Rodrigez.

This last group formation marked a pivotal juncture as we navigated through the intricate process of selecting a site and craf ting a design for our transit hub at Rotar y Park in Sioux Falls, SD. Drawing inspiration from diver se models generated throughout the semester, our collective ef for ts converged into the creation of the “Rotar y Conflux Hub.” Our design process was uniquely informed by an initial deep dive into the human capital of materials, a crucial aspect explored in the early phases of the cour se. This research laid the groundwork for a comprehensive document compiling our findings, shaping not only our under standing of materials but also influencing how we approached the design and functionality of our transit hub. The insights garnered from this exploration of human capital knowledge added a nuanced layer to our architectural approach, ensuring that our design not only met functional requirements but also considered the human experience and interaction within the built environment.

Throughout this transformative journey, I utilized tools like Rhino, Lumion, and Photoshop to craf t conceptual render s that accentuated the infusion of natural light into both the transpor t and conflux spaces. This holistic approach, integrating human capital considerations, reinforced the significance of dynamic collaboration in the architectural design process and contributed to the thoughtful development of the “Rotar y Conflux Hub.”

The Rotar y Conflux Hub, conceived during the ARCH 354-451654 Research Studio at South Dakota State Univer sity, is a groundbreaking architectural endeavor strategically situated at Sioux Falls’ Rotar y Park . The name “Rotar y Conflux Hub” reflects its fusion of purpose and location, symbolizing the convergence of diver se elements within the vibrant community. This multi-floored transpor tation hub boasts two main entities with distinct functions.

On the west side, a three-floored parking garage integrates seamlessly with an innovative hyperloop system, ensuring ef ficient and sustainable transit solutions. Meanwhile, the east side is a bustling space accommodating vendor s, buses, trains, and helicopter s, establishing a comprehensive and interconnected transpor tation hub.

The crowning feature is a unique compass-like structure connecting both entities on the top floor, creating a visually stunning and symbolic centerpiece that appear s to float above the adjacent river.

This intentional design marries form and functionality, prioritizing user-friendly navigation through a main circulation path and conceptual compass. A bundant natural lighting floods the interior, facilitated by strategically placed skylights that extend to the lower transit spaces, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The entire building’s intentional shif t on its axis adds dynamism and a unique visual element. Bridges extending from the hub seamlessly integrate with park paths below, fostering accessibility and strengthening the Hub’s connection with its natural surroundings.

The Rotar y Conflux Hub stands as a testament to thoughtful design, embodying innovation, connectivity, and community engagement within Sioux Falls’ urban landscape.
