The GTU is poised in the hills of North Berkeley, offering sweeping views of the Bay Area and access to one of the richest cultural centers in the country. Berkeley is rooted in a history of academics, the arts, and activism. Today, it is home to diverse, multicultural communities, artists, scholars, outdoor adventurers, freethinkers, spiritual seekers, and religious explorers of various traditions. Residents and visitors enjoy Berkeley’s many bookstores, acclaimed restaurants, breathtaking hikes, and vibrant intellectual culture.

Housing at Holy Names University

Berkeley’s central location makes it convenient for transportation in and around the Bay Area. There are three international airports in the Bay Area, with SFO and Oakland International Airport directly connected to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Getting around the Bay Area is a breeze using your Clipper Card seamlessly in the region’s robust public transit system.

A few miles from the GTU, Holy Names University (HNU) offers 15 dedicated rooms to GTU students. These furnished rooms include a twin XL bed, micro-fridge, desk and chair, vanity sink, and closet. Residents share gender neutral bathrooms. Please contact cmotupalli@gtu.edu with questions.

Local Rentals

Single students from GTU member schools are welcome to apply for a room at International House. This multicultural campus residence and program center promotes intercultural respect and understanding among nearly 600 residents (mostly graduate students) from 70+ countries. An historic building on the west side of UC Berkeley’s campus, I-House has its own cafe, dining hall, library, computer room, and resident lounges. Many GTU students find their housing using online listings such as Craigslist, Zillow, and more. While Berkeley is home to the GTU, you may find it easier (and less expensive) to live in a nearby community such as Albany, Kensington, Oakland, El Cerrito, or Richmond. You may also consider Concord, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Livermore, Dublin, Pleasanton, and Hayward—East Bay communities that are all served by the BART public transit system. Some students live in San Francisco, the vibrant and diverse city just across the Bay, much of which is easily accessible by BART and other forms of public transportation.

Member School Housing The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT), a GTU member school, houses their M.Div. students first, and then rents to M.A. and Ph.D. students, as space is available.

UC Berkeley’s International House

Berkeley Student Cooperative The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is a 501c3 nonprofit housing cooperative that provides affordable housing and board to students at UC Berkeley and other Bay Area colleges and universities.

Each house is democratically run, and all residents contribute labor to help keep housing costs affordable. Learn more about the Berkeley Student Co-op at bsc.coop.
