Message from The Graduate Union 2018 — a year of vibrancy and growth

Welcome to the December 2018 issue of The Melbourne Graduate.

community, catering, cleaning and collegiality, as well as varying terms of residency.

To begin this edition, we show the 2019–2021 Strategic Plan to be launched early next year. In this Plan we seek to build on our sound foundations, to grow the reach and influence of our membership and to expand our quality accommodation and meeting facilities.

Our GU Collegiate program continues to go from strength to strength. The Influenza Vaccination Day in April — now an annual tradition — was our most successful yet. In May, we held a very special Ramadan Iftar banquet and convened a well-attended annual General Meeting and dinner with our engaged and contributing Members. Our Donor Thank You Day in October was to show our gratitude to those who support our purposes with donations and bequests.

The permit for our redevelopment of 222 to 234 Leicester Street was granted on 31st July. We thus seek your support to raise the necessary funds to build this much needed residential college wing. Council and an expert Project Control Group will oversee this capital campaign, the financial and business modelling and the delivery of the detailed design and construction stages over the next five years.

In addition to our acquisition of 13 apartments in Barry Street late 2016, we purchased another 18 in Barkly Place in October. With a total of 145 rooms and capacity to house 170–180 each night, we nonetheless face increasing and unmet demand for our unique accommodation offering — that is, one that provides

Strategic Plan

2019–2021 Strategic Plan Building on foundations and expanding influence and facilities

This 2019–2021 Strategic Plan is the third for this Association.

C. Planned and Achieved Major Projects

Following a February strategic evening meeting with all Council, subcommittee and working party members, this Plan has been considered and developed in a staged manner at every subsequent governance meeting in 2018. The Association thus extends it gratitude to the many dedicated and hard-working Members who have provided contributions, much time, sound counsel and considered advice throughout this year.

Facilities at Graduate House are at least doubled and meet market demand and expectations.

The following shows the five key priorities for the next three years. These main areas of focus are similar to those of the 2016–2018 Strategic Plan and are designed to honour the positive legacies of our past, to build on the gains achieved in the last six years with the previous Strategic Plans and to continue this period of growth in membership reach and influence, as well as in infrastructure.

Key result areas are listed for each priority.

A. Innovative Influential Membership Graduate House is the place and Graduate Union the network in which graduates want and need to be.

Members and their network groups connect readily to satellite groups of influence and innovation around the world.

The Association is renowned globally for delivery of activities that advance education for the benefit of the community.

Generations from the same families are Members.

B. Culture of Giving Members are driving advancement and the engagement of influential networks with the Association.

Major funds have been secured from bequests, donations and other endowment sources.

A Blueprint for the way forward envisages how Graduate House and The Graduate Union will be vibrant, thriving, relevant and exciting in 50 years’ time.

Additional facilities that are Graduate House ‘wings’ and other Graduate Houses are acquired.

Plans and policies are innovative, developed with timeliness and implemented to give measurable benefits to the Association.

D. Well-Managed Finances and Mitigated Risk Sound financial controls, risk mitigation and management and unqualified audit reports.

Debt reduction.

Financial performance that enables both operations and development.

E. Effective Responsive Stewardship Sound and productive relationships with other groups working towards education and social good — locally and globally.

Groups that convene at Graduate House seek involvement with other Member segments.

Council is renowned globally for ethical and sound leadership and governance.

Diversity of representation of all segments of the membership on Council and its subcommittees.

Currency and relevancy in the purposes, rules, regulations and operations of the organisation.

Major projects for Buildings, Facilities (G-House) and the Membership (G-Union) are defined for targeted advancement funding and campaigns.

The crowd-funding site is a platform for academic, economic and social good, research, development and sustainability for People, Programs and Places.

About the Diamond Jubilee Campaign

Your assistance is appreciated

Graduate House is the only dedicated graduate-level residential college in Melbourne and one of only a few worldwide. We commemorated our 60th anniversary in 2017 by opening the next chapter in the life of our historic building.

Support comes in many forms and at different stages.

Our Diamond Jubilee Campaign will see us construct a new, 11-storey above-ground and 5-basement below‑ground residential building with 136 new rooms to double our current quality accommodation capacity and continue to provide a vibrant collegiate environment for our Resident Members.

Our gratitude is extended to the generous donors who have contributed in the early days of this campaign. We are also grateful to those who are assisting us with our feasibility study, spreading the word in their networks and arranging meetings with those who are likely to support this important cause.

The permit for this redevelopment was approved by Melbourne City Council late July this year. This provides for construction to commence in three years and to be completed in five.

It is you — our Members and supporters — who have made our Graduate House what it is today. We know that we can count on you at this exciting and historic time.

The estimated cost to build is just over $40M. We are thus seeking your assistance to raise the necessary capital for this much needed development.

Some 60 years later, 700 to 800 residents call this unique graduate college home each year.

Graduate House maintains a high average level of occupancy but in its current form is unable to meet market demand for graduate-level housing.

Over 38,000 students are enrolled in postgraduate coursework and research studies at The University of Melbourne and at RMIT — a 25% increase since 2016.

Additionally, hundreds of scholars visit this precinct each year to deliver education, to work in collaborative research teams, to attend and present at conferences and seminars and to assist in the translation of research to further industry, the economy and our global society.

With long waiting lists and limited capacity, we are unable to meet this ever‑increasing demand.

Expansion to meet demand

18 studio apartments at Barkly Place

Although there has been a very large increase in postgraduate student enrolments, there is a lack of supportive infrastructure in place to assist those undertaking study.

This additional opportunity to purchase off-site presented itself early in 2018 and on 5th October the Association settled on its purchase of a further 18 studio apartments.

The Graduate Union has challenged itself to meet this demand, by increasing our provision of a collegiate and mature living environment for the under-served graduate population. We have housed graduate-level students and academics/researchers for decades, cultivating a deep understanding of their unique needs.

The mature collegiate environment we provide means that like-minded graduates at all study and career stages connect across disciplines, age groups and nationalities to support each other and to knit lifelong collaborations.

Barkly Place is in the block bounded by Pelham, Leicester, Queensberry and Bouverie Streets. It is a four‑minute walk from the main Leicester Street Graduate House.

Off-site Acquisition Policy In addition to the redevelopment at its Leicester Street site, the Association has an off-site acquisition policy of adding to its asset portfolio studio apartments that are close to the main Leicester Street facility.

This strategy was first implemented late 2016 with the purchase of 13 apartments at 50 Barry Street.

Following refurbishment and availability from April 2017 these have proved a popular choice for graduates who seek participation in college life while living more independently nearby.

Like those at Barry Street, each studio apartment has a bed, desk and en suite, as well as a kitchenette.

Welcoming our new Resident Members It has been a pleasure to welcome to our college and to our membership the current residents at Barkly Place.

Each has come into Graduate House and thence been unable to suppress their relief at this Association's emphasis on inclusion and friendliness.

Above all, these introductions and welcomes have reinforced strongly the need for our Association to provide a community for graduate students who live alone in such student accommodation, a long way from home — be this home regional Victoria, another part of Australia or another part of the world. It has been soul‑wrenching to hear their stories of isolation while here in this, our liveable city of Melbourne.

Influenza Vaccination Day Thursday, 17th April 2018

The sixth annual Influenza Vaccination Day at Graduate House

The Graduate Union is grateful to the Immunisation Coalition and Vaccin8 @ Work for another successful Influenza Vaccination Day at Graduate House on Tuesday, 7th April. A total of 449 people were vaccinated — 350 confirmed bookings and 99 walk‑ins.

A lot of preparation and work went into Vaccination Day — the management involved in the lead-up to the day, appointment bookings, room set-up, the coordination of all the wonderful nurses, the delivery of vaccines to Graduate House, logistics, marketing, communications between all involved, provision of information and flyers for patients, among many other things.

“It is a privilege to be involved in this event,” said Vaccin8 @ Work Director, Ms Kerryn Lajoie.

“I am very grateful to the group of nurses who consistently donate their time and skill to support events like this. It is a very busy time for immunisation nurses and they often give up the opportunity of extra paid work to support such events.

It was a great team effort. I could not articulate better than in the following two quotes.”

The Graduate Union CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett, was most appreciative of the efforts of all involved. “The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes — the time, energy and effort spent volunteering not only on Vaccination Day, but in the lead-up, for the greater good of the community, is highly commendable, exemplary and inspirational,” she said.

“The giving of vaccines without charge for the benefit of the community, shows an amazing level of commitment and selflessness. We are honoured to have had this opportunity

again to work with the Immunisation Coalition and Vaccin8 @ Work in ensuring that our community is vaccinated. We thank you on behalf of all of our Members and all those in the Carlton community.”

Ramadan Iftar Banquet Saturday, 26th May 2018

A celebration of multicultural diversity

Graduate House hosted its inaugural Ramadan Iftar Banquet and celebration on Saturday, 26th May. CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett, was thrilled to host the banquet. “We are excited to host this event, the first of many, which is so conducive towards fostering a sense of respect and harmony. Graduate House is a place that nurtures goodwill and understanding within both our local and the wider community.”

A warm welcome and acknowledgement was extended to the President of The Graduate Union, Dr Ken V Loughnan AO, Chairperson of Council, Mr Rhys Watson and Council Members Ms Molina Asthana, Mr Kingsley Davis OAM, Ms Mary R Kelleher, The Hon Tony Pagone and his wife, Mrs Margaret Pagone, and Mr Leo Santalucia.

A warm welcome was extended also to distinguished guests, who

The Ramadan Iftar banquet was attended by more than 70 guests. The event was a way of acknowledging the growing percentage of our Resident Members who are of Muslim faith, and to further advance our inclusive and welcoming approach to Members.

The organising committee for the banquet included Ms Haya Daghlas, a PhD candidate at the School of Engineering, The University of Melbourne; Mr Ahmet Keskin, the Executive Director of the Australian Intercultural Society (AIS); Mr Mubarek Imam, a leader in the Eritrean youth community; and staff members of The Graduate Union.

Mr Keskin reflected on the role that AIS plays in the community.

“AIS believes we can be an agent for change and goodness and we started our own Iftar. Soon we saw

GU Collegiate other organisations holding their own and now we have 48 private Iftars, where we not only share food, but common values too.”

“The Graduate Union is an example of this unity, for we are your neighbours and friends, and we share the future of Australia with you.”

Mr Keskin explained the meaning of Ramadan to the audience, and while acknowledging the concerns everyone has regarding threats to peace and our sense of security and safety, he said that by developing a sense of goodwill in the community, people will work towards a common goal. “We need to find a common cause, so that children can advance forward respectfully and strive to make this country better.”

The Graduate Union is grateful to Ms Haya Daghlas, Mr Ahmet Keskin and Mr Mubarek Imam for their contributions to the inaugural Ramadan Iftar Banquet.

Donor Thank You Day Celebrating the generosity of our benefactors

Our annual Donor Thank You Day was held on Sunday, 7th October in recognition of the generosity of our donors and benefactors and to express our gratitude to those who have supported our Association.

Since it was founded in 1911, The Graduate Unions’ Members have built the Association through their generous contribution of donations, gifts, funds, bequests, and sponsorships. This has created a culture of giving and an awareness of philanthropic causes.

Graduate House hosted a lunch with special guest speaker, Ms Susan Pascoe AM, Chair of the Australian Council for International Development and the Community Directors Council.

Formal presentations in the combined Stillwell and Ian Potter Rooms commenced with CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett who introduced the Vice-Chairperson of Council, Cr Vincent Mirabelli.

Cr Mirabelli thanked the audience for their ongoing support and commitment to the organisation.

Dr Bennett introduced guest speaker, Ms Susan Pascoe AM, whose presentation covered the role and place philanthropy has in creating and shaping the Australia of today.

Ms Pascoe’s presentation was followed by Resident Members, Ms Daniela Yaneva and Mr Joshua Rhee, who attended the four-day 2018 National Student Leadership Forum in Canberra in September as ambassadors of The Graduate Union.

Daniela spoke about the knowledge she gained from the Forum, saying that it was a life-changing experience and one that gave her and the other attendees more knowledge than they had anticipated. They experienced

firsthand exposure to the politics of Canberra (in the week of the leadership spill), finding it to be a formative experience and one for which she expressed gratitude to the Association.

Joshua spoke about why he is studying morality, and how different values and ideological beliefs can create divisions among people, but can also bring them together.

He said that Graduate House has offered him unique opportunities such as his attendance at the National Student Leadership Forum.

Joshua was thankful for the chance to interact with national leaders at the Forum.

He discovered that being a leader didn’t require any extraordinary gifts, resources, or courage, but simply the desire to serve others.

Joshua was appreciative every day that “diversity is the norm and intolerance is not” at Graduate House. He expressed his thanks to all the donors and volunteers who make Graduate House such a unique place.

It was soon time for the Graduate House Quiz, with questions focused on the Diamond Jubilee Campaign,

past benefaction and the history of The Graduate Union. The scores were very close, but Table 8 was declared the winner with a perfect score of 12/12.

The formal proceedings came to a close and Members were invited to stay on in the Phillip Law Members’ Lounge for further refreshments and conversation.

Address by Ms Susan Pascoe AM Ms Susan Pascoe AM describes herself as a ‘post-salary’ person — having concluded her role as the inaugural Commissioner of the Australian Charities and Not-ForProfit Commission in 2017.

Her current work includes board work and consultancies, particularly as Chair of the Australian Council for International Development, the peak body of overseas aid organisations in Australia; and Chair of the Community Directors Council, a new enterprise established to give good governance in the not-forprofit sector.

Ms Pascoe’s presentation focused on the importance of philanthropy in Melbourne, and how free music concerts and children’s gardens all enrich the cultural life of the city.

Donations Highlighting how philanthropy has often taken on global goals, like ending modern slavery, she discussed the work done by some of Australia’s major philanthropists, such as the Paul Ramsay Foundation in Sydney and Pratt Philanthropies in Melbourne.

Ms Pascoe summarised some of the latest data and trends in philanthropy, and outlined how giving is changing today, with women becoming more generous with their time and money in giving, and the increasing generous nature of corporate Australia.

Ms Pascoe reviewed some of the early examples of philanthropy that emerged from the livestock industry and the Gold Rush era and noted how wealth has moved away from the mining boom and financial sectors to other areas.

Ms Pascoe was appreciative of the charitable nature of Australians and applauded the giving spirit of the donors and benefactors of The Graduate Union — emphasising that such giving is strengthening civil society and making us all better people.

The Graduate Union’s CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett, commenced the evening with an Acknowledgement of Country, recognising the Wurundjeri people, as the traditional custodians of the land upon which this meeting was held. Dr Bennett also paid respect to the Elders past and present of the Kulin Nations and to other Indigenous Australians present.

In the pre-annual General Meeting proceedings, Dr Bennett announced the recipients of awards.

The 2018 Graduate House Research Scholarship was awarded to Resident Member, Mr Shuntaro Iizuka (PhD Candidate, Public Administration and Management in Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts, The University of Melbourne), for his research entitled How do contemporary government agencies work?: An analysis of survey data.

Shuntaro gave a presentation of his research, explaining that he would use the Graduate House Research Scholarship funds to travel to Japan

to undertake follow-up interviews with chief executive officers of government agencies, and to present his results at the 2018 Biennial World Congress of Political Science, International Political Science Association, the 2019 Annual Conference of International Research Society for Public Management and the 2019 Annual Congress of International Institute of Administrative Sciences.

In congratulating Mr Iizuka, The President of The Graduate Union, Dr Ken V Loughnan AO presented him with an inscribed trophy and a certificate scroll.

The Chairperson of Council, Cr Rhys Watson, announced the recipient of the 2018 Margaret Watson Travelling Fellowship and the 2018 Robert Heaton Research Support Award as Resident Member, Ms Juanjuan Wu (PhD Candidate, Faculty of Arts, The University of Melbourne).

These awards support travel expenses to further the research by a talented Resident Member in the arts.

Juanjuan gave a presentation of her research, explaining that she would use the Graduate House Research Scholarship funds to travel to Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh to undertake librarybased field research, and to present her research at the Borders and Crossings: International and Multidisciplinary Conference on Travel Writing in September 2018 in Pula, Croatia.

The President then officially opened the 106th AGM and introduced Council members in attendance: Cr Rhys Watson, Cr Mary R Kelleher, Cr David Cowie, Cr Kingsley Davis OAM, Cr Keith Ryall, Cr Vincent Mirabelli, Cr The Hon Justice Gaetano (Tony) Pagone and Cr Leo Santalucia.

The President welcomed the Association’s Auditor, Mr Sam Claringbold and his team, and the Returning Officer, Mr Ron Ritchie.

GU Collegiate The President spoke of the tremendous demand for postgraduate student accommodation, giving the example of the higher number of postgraduate than undergraduate students at The University of Melbourne. He noted that Graduate House is the only college of its type in Melbourne, and the desire to continue its growth into the future. Showcasing the architectural design of Stage One of the Master Plan, the President pointed Members to the ‘world of tomorrow’ — a world of far better accommodation for postgraduate students, as well as of improved and more meeting places, dining rooms and opportunities to hold functions for non-resident Members.

The President noted that 2017 was a very ‘solid’ year with a sustainable balance sheet, a surplus, sound management and governance by Council and its subcommittees, and effective, efficient processes.

Pointing to the warm, friendly and homely environment of Graduate House, the President spoke of the many opportunities for participation

by Members and visitors to Graduate House, and to the continuous capital improvements to the facility.

Expressing his acknowledgement, thanks, and congratulations to the executive and the dedicated staff in all units, the President referred to the sensational banquet and service provided at the GU inaugural Ramadan Iftar Banquet held on Saturday, 26th May at Graduate House.

He extended gratitude to the Association’s auditor, Mr Sam Claringbold, for the comprehensive 2017 audit, to the Members who had contributed to the Diamond Jubilee Campaign, and to Members, Ms Natalie Gray for her tremendous contribution to the planning of the application and construction for Stage 1, and Mr Paul Barnett, for his assistance in structuring the campaign. The President also mentioned visits over 2017 to Graduate House

by Honorary Members in high office. “Delegations from the different countries of Resident Member origin, and the delegations’ expressions of interest in having more postgraduates from their regions take up residence here, are very rewarding,” he said.

applauded the tremendous work of the Chancellor, Mr Allan Myers AC QC, who has a very clear understanding of the important role that the Association plays.

In concluding, the President summarised 2017 as a successful, productive and vibrant year that has put the Association on the road to a great future with a wonderful new building and quality facilities.

He thanked all Members for their contributions and for receiving his report.

Cr Watson noted 2017 as marking the Diamond Jubilee — 60 years since the realisation of a vision of a self-governing residential college for graduates set up by graduates. He pointed to the very basis of the Association as one of being egalitarian and inclusive, free, secular and democratic. Pointing to 2022 as the 60-year anniversary of the opening of the first terrace house as a college, Cr Watson mentioned the welcoming of seven postgraduate student residents in 1962.

GU Collegiate position of more students and modern rooms and facilities has continued. Our progress with the strategic and master plans, and the meeting of the growing needs of each new generation of graduates has increased.

as Rotary International, Variety: The Children’s Charity, the United Board, Oaktree and the Kelvin Club; as well as the recent launch of the GU Crowdfunding site to assist Members in raising funds for research purposes.

He acknowledged that the 13 apartments at 50 Barry Street had been integrated successfully into the operations of the college and had been a popular choice for those seeking both independence and engagement in college life.

Cr Watson reported the financial results of 2017. These included the building of the equity position and of increased surpluses to provide for the future of the college, to manage the borrowings and to provide for unexpected business shocks.

Cr Watson referred to the college as being built on the endowments and generosity of Members and friends of the college. He recognised the importance of this continued support now and into the future from Members and pointed to the establishment of the Diamond Jubilee Campaign, which was to build on the vision of the college founders, and so meet the increasing need for quality, collegiate postgraduate accommodation.

Cr Watson expressed his honour in having served the Members over the last four years as Chairperson and having worked with Members in building on the successful legacy established by the founders, increasing the focus on strategy, strengthening the financial position, establishing a ‘culture of philanthropy’, expanding and improving the quality of the facilities, building strategic alliances and increasing the membership base.

Referencing intellectual capital, Cr Watson mentioned the Association’s focus on meeting the needs of graduates throughout their careers and life journeys.

Dr Kerry Bennett, CEO/Head of College commenced her report, thanking the President and the Chairperson of Council. Dr Bennett informed Members that 2017 had been another good year with sound progress on the key priorities of the second year of the second strategic plan (2016–18): innovative influential membership; benefaction; planned and achieved major projects; well-managed finances and mitigated risk; and effective responsive stewardship.

Dr Bennett explained the intent in 2018 to develop the third three-year strategic plan (2019–21) for launch early in 2019 along similar priorities.

With respect to the Association’s 2017 activities, Dr Bennett reported: • approximately 130 GU Collegiate events were held, with approximately 2,000 attendees and excellent speakers/convenors from many different disciplines, walks of life and countries; • 22,798 delegates attending 1,025 events and functions convened by 238 groups, predominantly in the not-forprofit sector; • continued high college occupancy, averaging 92%, and more than 700 Residents from many different regions of the world, as well as increasing demand with over 38,000 postgraduates enrolled at The University of Melbourne and RMIT University; • the increased focus on advancement systems and practices, with the constituting of the Fundraising and Benefactions working party as a subcommittee of Council;

• the direction of the 2017 Annual Appeal donations to the funding of new carpet and the reupholstering of the tub chairs in the Phillip Law

GU Collegiate Members Lounge, and the design of the 2018 Annual Appeal to the building of reserves for the support of two Resident Members to attend the annual National Student Leadership Forum in Canberra; • the launch of, and progress with, the Diamond Jubilee Campaign, as well as with the planning application for the redevelopment behind the terraces following a comprehensive redesign of the façade plans; • the launch of the Fund Lifelong Learning Crowdfunding site with a focus on education, professional development, research and social good; • the establishment of the Barbara Funder Lounge in the former reception foyer at 220 Leicester Street which was made possible through Miss Funder’s generous bequest; and • many meetings to steel the organisation against disruption from the construction activities associated with the new Parkville Station and the ‘reimagined’ University Square.

In concluding her report, Dr Bennett thanked the Members, the President, the Council and its subcommittees and her hard-working and dedicated colleagues on staff.

Cr David Cowie, Chairperson of the Finance and Audit subcommittee, was invited to the podium to submit the financial report for the year ended 31st December 2017.

The key results were: • revenue had increased by 5% since 2016 and had been generated primarily from accommodation ($2.0M, 56.8%) and catering ($1.3M, 38%), with increases from 2016 of $104K (with the addition of the Barry Street apartments) and $47K, respectively, and other revenue sources including membership subscriptions, interest and property rentals.

• donations and bequests had increased from $52K in 2016 to $297K in 2017. This is due to the generosity of Members as well as to the large bequest from the estate of the late Miss Barbara Funder.

• key expenses continued to include those for salaries and wages ($1.7M, increasing from 2016 by $61K) and catering ($0.6M, slightly lower than that in 2016 due to stringent management of costs).

• interest payments had increased year on year due to the increased borrowings to fund the acquisition of the Barry Street apartments in 2016.

• the surplus in 2017 of $425,441 was $293K more than the surplus in 2016.

• cash and cash equivalents in 2017 of $431,555 were $254K more than in 2016.

• borrowings were similar to those of 2016 both in terms of the banks supporting the Association and the size of the loans, with a face value of $6.5M for the National Australia Bank loan for the Leicester Street facility, and of $1.92M for the Bank Australia loan for the Barry Street apartments.

• total equity (assets minus liabilities) had increased by $415,065 from 2016 to $21,564,887 in 2017.

The Returning Officer of The Graduate Union, Mr Ron Ritchie was invited to the podium to speak about the results of the 2018 Council elections. He reported that five valid candidates were nominated (one nomination withdrawn), 233 envelopes were received containing 218 valid ballot papers and 15 invalid ballot papers.

Mr Ritchie declared the following candidates elected for a term up to the 2021 AGM: Ms Mary R Kelleher, Mr David Cowie and Mr Kingsley Davis OAM. Dr Loughnan announced a new award in appreciation of dedicated,

exemplary and professional services to the Association. This inaugural President’s Excellence Award was presented to Mr Daniel Clark, The Graduate Union’s Operations Manager.

An Honorary Life Membership Award was presented to Dr Graham Mitchell AO (in absentia).

Dr Mitchell, Joint Chief Scientist for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, had been one of the first residents in the 1960s at Graduate House during his doctoral research study period, occupying the terrace room planned in the redevelopment to be the CEO’s office.

He has contributed generously of his time and expertise to the Diamond Jubilee Campaign, including the provision of a testimonial of his stay at Graduate House in writing and through one of the promotional videos.

Dr Irma Mooi-Reci is Director of the Master of Social Policy at the School of Social and Political Sciences at The University of Melbourne and visiting Professor at Nuffield College, Oxford University, and contributed to college life significantly during her residency over 2016 and 2017.

After post-doctoral experience in California (Stanford), England (National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill) and Switzerland (Basel Institute for Immunology), he returned to Australia in 1973 and established a new program on the immunology of parasitism at WEHI. This program became a major component of the global effort to develop new tools for the control of parasitic diseases, and of the ‘biotechnology revolution’.

Citation — Dr Graham Mitchell AO Honorary Life Membership Award

Dr Graham Mitchell AO, PhD serves as a Principal of Foursight Associates Pty Ltd and, along with the other Principals, is joint Chief Scientist for the (now-named) Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

Dr Mitchell is a veterinary graduate and University gold medallist of the University of Sydney. At The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) he made discoveries in immunology and obtained a PhD in 1969. During his doctoral research study period he was a resident at Graduate House, in the terrace room planned

Dr Mitchell was instrumental in establishing a long term program on the disease schistosomiasis in the Philippines. In 1990 Mitchell was appointed Director of the prestigious Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens where he introduced a number of new initiatives in local and regional conservation.

In 1993 he returned to biomedical research as Director of Research in the R&D Division of CSL Limited, Australia’s largest developer, manufacturer and marketer of ethical human biologicals and veterinary products. He was responsible for identifying and assessing new opportunities for CSL, nurturing external research collaborations, and the research component of new product development including vaccines. Dr Mitchell is recognised as one of Australia’s leading biological scientists.

His expertise extends over a wide range of science and technology.

He has detailed knowledge of the academia-industry interface, has worked in many overseas countries and been involved with tropical disease programs of the World Health Organisation for many years.

He is an author of more than 350 publications, has received numerous awards for scientific achievements and, in 1993, was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia for services to science. Dr Mitchell has been an advisor on innovation

to the Victorian, Commonwealth, Tasmanian and Northern Territory Governments.

Dr Mitchell is a non-executive director of Antisense Therapeutics Limited, Avipep Pty Ltd, Artisan Therapeutics Pty Ltd and WEHI. He has contributed generously of his time and expertise to the Diamond Jubilee Campaign, including testimonials of his stay here at Graduate House in the 1960s while undertaking his PhD and being the subject of one of the recent promotional short videos.

Dr Mitchell provided the following testimonial for inclusion in the Diamond Jubilee campaign booklet: I’m glad to say I was one of Graduate House’s first postgraduate student residents in the late 1960s when I was undertaking my doctoral research.

My time there was rewarding and memorable with many friendships made. My room was on the second storey of the Leicester Street terraces overlooking what was then a bowling green. I understand this room is in the exact location that has been set aside for the Head of College’s office after completion of the Diamond Jubilee re‑development.

It was during my time in Graduate House’s care (if I recall, full board for $17 per week!) that I made discoveries in immunology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. Knowing that my discoveries would increase the pool of knowledge and one day perhaps make a difference in people’s lives was very motivating.

I completed my Doctorate in 1969.

The Annual General Meeting Dinner Ms Anne Robinson AM Guest speaker at the AGM Dinner, Ms Anne Robinson describes herself as an ‘accidental lawyer’ — not ‘accident-prone’, but someone who never intended to study law or become a lawyer. She spoke to guests at the AGM dinner following outlining her ‘graduate pathway’ and its many interesting twists and turns.

Dr David Wilson is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Engineering and Infrastructure at The University of Melbourne.

Dr Wilson is also a transport planner in Chicago and Los Angeles and a consultant to the Port of Melbourne developing a computer simulation model of land-sea interface. He has provided consultancy advice in logistics and transport to Australia Post, Australian Air Express, Kmart, Bunge Metals and Engineering, and Ratio Planners.

Previously Director of Transport in Victoria, Dr Wilson has also been a Senior Research Fellow with the (then) Transport Research Centre (University of Melbourne and then RMIT) and an Invited Lecturer to the Department of Industrial Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Purdue University.

Dr Wilson has undertaken a number of research projects on project governance for the Victorian Government Department of Treasury and Finance. He is well-published — and lectures — in transport planning and transport economics, and logistics. He has supervised Masters and PhD students at RMIT University, Monash University and The University of Melbourne.

Dr Irma Mooi-Reci is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Master of Social Policy at the School of Social and Political Sciences at The University of Melbourne.

Previously Dr Mooi-Reci worked as Assistant Professor and Programme Director of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam.

Dr Mooi-Reci researches employment instability and its implications for individual careers, wage opportunities and public policy. Her research agenda encompasses three main areas: the socioeconomic consequences of disruptive events such as unemployment, joblessness and casual employment; the intergenerational consequences of joblessness; and the application and innovation of quantitative methods for panel data.

Dr Mooi-Reci has been a visiting scholar at the University of Madison Wisconsin in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and is currently a visiting professor at Nuffield College, Oxford University. Irma has published in various journals including Social Science Research, European Sociological Review, British Journal of Industrial Relations and Social Forces. vvv

Anne grew up in a theological college in the grounds of The University of Sydney, in the innercity suburb of Newtown, one of the oldest suburbs of Sydney. This was before it became trendy, not full, as it is today, of bohemian bars, theatres, restaurants and live music. It was filled then with the first waves of post-WWII Greek, Lebanese and Italian migrants and significant numbers of Indigenous people. “It was an exciting place. It was fantastic, I didn’t know anything better anywhere,” she said. Ms Morrison attended North Newtown Demonstration School which had students from very diverse backgrounds. “It was very grounding.

I didn’t realise that until later.”

Anne’s father was a clergyman and an Ancient Greek scholar.

The family lived in an area full of ‘tramps’ (homeless people, often addicted to alcohol or methylated spirits), who would often sleep on the family front porch, looking for food hand-outs in the morning.

“This was pretty grounding and confronting, but I didn’t think it was confronting. I thought it was just fine. This was normal. This was my childhood.” During WWII, her father was pulled out of university to work for the Signals Directorate as a ‘codebreaker’, but as a signatory to the Official Secrets Act, he was not allowed to tell his family about his work.

Anne’s mother and grandmother were both graduates, which Anne said was “really unusual” in those days. Her mother lived in the Northern Territory for six months in 1948 during the time that the

GU Collegiate National Geographic Survey Team was there. Anne found out about this “by accident” while visiting the opening of an art gallery with her mother which featured the National Geographic photos from that time.

Her mother recognised several of the people in the photographs.

“What on earth are you talking about?” asked Anne, before her mother explained that she and been there during that period. “To me, this was a profoundly influencing experience to grow up with… that’s what you can do with education.”

After completing school, Anne lived in London for a year “before they invented gap years”. She returned, to Melbourne, “busting to study” history, philosophy and politics at Macquarie University.

In her second year, Macquarie University started a Law School, and Anne took law as a non-degree subject as part of her Arts degree.

She loved studying law, so changed her course, ending up with first class Honours in International Law, but still didn’t want to practice law.

After graduating, a friend convinced her to try out working in a law firm for nine months, and she “loved it”, before going to the College of Law. She then joined Stephen Jacques & Stephen, now known as King & Wood Mallesons.

Jump forward 18 years, and Anne now has three children. In 1998, she returned to law practice. In 2000, she joined the Board of World Vision Australia where she served for 12 years, seven years as Chair.

Upon her return to Sydney from a World Vision field trip to Chile and Peru, she formed Prolegis Lawyers in 2001 to assist charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Motivated to “make the world a better place”, Prolegis Lawyers has a team of 19 (and growing) in Sydney and Melbourne. Some of its work includes small start-up companies to much bigger ventures such as restructuring the Paul Ramsay Foundation — with Australia’s biggest philanthropic gift — and working with Andrew ‘Twiggy’

Forrest and his wife, who were the first Australians to sign The Giving Pledge.

This, Anne explained, is “a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to giving back”.

One of Anne’s inspirations is little-known American writer and theologian, Frederick Beuchner (born 1926), who wrote: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

Another of her inspirations is William Wilberforce (1759-1833), the English member of Parliament and social reformer who was very influential in the abolition of the slave trade and, eventually, slavery itself in the British Empire. His story is featured in the 2006 film, Amazing Grace. Wilberforce was actively involved in 69 known philanthropic activities (including fighting on behalf of chimney sweeps, single mothers, Sunday schools, orphans, juvenile delinquents), was one of the founders of the RSPCA and gave away a quarter of his wealth every year.

Anne is the Chair of the Bible Society of Australia, Australia’s oldest living charity celebrating its 201st birthday this year. Its focus is on literacy and (currently) on completing translations of the Kriol Bible, an English-based Creole language spoken in the Northern Territory and, after 40 years of work, the Pitjantjatjara Bible.

Finally, Anne talked about a group of inspirational young people whom she called “modern day Wilberforces with a twist”. Meeting them while on a trip with World Vision Zambia where she was doing voluntary work, she says she was accustomed to seeing poverty, having grown up in Newtown among the ‘tramps’, and knew about the “smell of poverty” in third world countries. What she wasn’t used to was “the sound of

people wailing as they were burying their family members with that scourge, the AIDS pandemic”. The young people from World Vision Zambia invited Anne to go out with them to see what they did at night with a project they called ‘Corridors of Hope’.

This is a program for female sex workers, mostly orphans, as young as 11 years of age, to help them with their health issues (most of these girls and women were HIV-positive), and assist them with nutrition, and to find alternative employment.

Anne was inspired by these young World Vision Zambia people. “They had education. They had a ticket out of there, and yet they were doing this because they believed it was the right thing to do and they were committed to doing it. They were committed to their communities. It was just absolutely extraordinary.

“It was a message of hope, possibilities of change, with cheerfulness and a clear sense of intent. I reckon they were like modern-day Wilberforces and that’s what really inspires me. My education gave me a chance to do this stuff, and here I am.” vvv

Congratulations to our past President of The Graduate Union, Professor Jeffrey Victor Rosenfeld AC, OBE who was appointed Companion in the General Division of The Order of Australia on Australia Day 2018 — the nation's highest civilian honour.

This appointment was for eminent service to medicine, particularly in the discipline of neurosurgery, as an academic and clinician, to medical research and professional organisations, and to the health and welfare of current and former defence force members.

Congratulations to our current President, Dr Ken V Loughnan AO on his appointment as International President of Variety, the Children’s Charity International.

Variety celebrated its 90th anniversary on United Nations (UN) Universal Children’s Day (20th November) which acknowledges adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Declaration (1959) and the Convention (1989) on children’s rights — the right to life, health, education, protection from violence and discrimination — the right to live, laugh and learn.

Congratulations to our Chairperson of Council, The Hon Gaetano (Tony) Pagone who was elected President of the International Association of Judges (IAJ) at its Central Council session on 16th October 2018 in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The IAJ was founded in Salzburg, Austria in 1953. It is a professional, non-political, international organisation, bringing together national associations of judges, not individual judges, who are approved by the Central Council for admission to the Association.

In 1938, Miss Shirley Cook, a young girl from Proserpine, Queensland wrote to the Winnipeg Free Press in Winnipeg, Canada seeking a pen pal. The then 11-year-old Allan Casey and Shirley started a correspondence, which has lasted an extraordinary 80 years and is ongoing. These days they communicate by phone or by letter, Allan not being a user of email.

During World War II, their letters were censored by their respective governments, with censorship only ceasing after the war.

It took 23 years after their correspondence started before Allan finally met Shirley, now Mrs Shirley Insch, and her husband, Jack, in the flesh, on “the coldest day ever” in Melbourne, in 1961, according to Shirley. She didn’t come back to Melbourne for many years because of the cold, being used to the warmer climate of Queensland where she lived, raising a family, and variously running sugar cane farms and later owning and managing hotels.

In 1945, after completing school, Allan enrolled at the United College in Winnipeg, a constituent college of the University of Manitoba, because of the kindness of the Registrar.

The Registrar and the staff of the United College provided a good learning environment, and because of this environment, Allan joined the United Church which, to this day, he remains a member.

Allan was at the United College for the first two years of his five years of study in Winnipeg, then transferred to the University of Manitoba where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours), majoring in Mathematics and Physics. However, Chemistry was always Allan’s first love, having performed “chemistry experiments

in the basement as a young man”. However, there was no graduation ceremony for Allan in 1950 as the university was “just a big lake” due to severe floods that year. During the summer holidays, Allan worked delivering telegrams, cycling 50 to 60 miles per day, keeping fit and earning enough to finance the next stage of his study.

Allan continued his education with a Master of Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, which he completed in 1953.

One of the staff at the University of British Columbia, a man not much older than Allan, convinced him and several of his master’s colleagues that it was an essential part of their education to study in the United Kingdom, so all enrolled to study for PhDs in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Many went there the following year to study, but Allan couldn’t as he was flat broke. This, however, led to the first of three transformative events in his life.

Firstly, to earn some money for a year before he embarked on his PhD at Cambridge, Allan was employed by the Canadian government for a job in the Arctic to measure

the earth’s magnetic field and its components in Baker Lake, Northwest Territories (since 1999, the part of the Northwest Territories in which Baker Lake is located, has been officially separated into what is now called Nunavut, the newest, largest, and northern-most province of Canada). “Removed from civilisation”, the experience “helped me to grow up,” Allan said. Part of his job was to ensure that all the equipment was working, and there was nobody but himself to rely on.

He lived in an ionospheric radio station which operated 24 hours per day. He worked in the Arctic for a year until September 1954.

Secondly, the secretary in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia successfully applied for a

scholarship on his behalf for a year of his PhD, essential to having the resources to study overseas for three years.

Thirdly, Allan was a keen indoor bowler, and he used to bowl in a league run by local small businesses in Vancouver. He so impressed the owner of the small business who sponsored his team that she gave him an envelope full of cash for his PhD studies, saying that she didn’t know how much was in the envelope, but that he could have it, count it, and that whatever amount of cash was in the envelope, he was to eventually repay her when he could, with no interest. Allan counted the cash and found that there was C$1,500 in the envelope, a lot of money in the 1950s (worth about C$14,000 or A$14,400 today), an amount Allan eventually repaid to the businesswoman.

The trust she placed in him and her act of generosity are two things that Allan has never forgotten.

Allan finally got to Cambridge with his savings from his Arctic experience, his scholarship and the cash in the envelope, where he earned his PhD in Chemistry in 1958 under the tutelage of Britain’s leading radiochemist Dr Alfred Maddock.

Allan then applied to the eight (and there were only eight at the time) universities in Australia looking for work, partly influenced and inspired by his then 20 years of correspondence with Shirley. The University of Melbourne was the only university where he was successful, and he continued to succeed there for the next 35 years, lecturing in Inorganic Chemistry until he had to abide by the

university retirement age policy (age 65) in December 1992.

After retirement, Allan remained active in various roles including sitting on his children’s school council, serving on several advisory bodies to the Victorian Minister for Education and supervising Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) exams at St. Leonard’s College for more than 15 years.

Allan has been a Life Member of The Graduate Union for 36 years and his wife, Andrea, became a Life Member in 2016. They are regular visitors to Graduate House, always endeavouring to attend the Monthly Luncheons, or just coming in for a meal. We hope to see them at Graduate House for many years to come, and that Allan’s and Shirley’s correspondence continues as it moves closer and closer to a century of correspondence! vvv

Mart Snoek and Linda Liethaus Resident Members, 1980

Mart Snoek from The Netherlands and Linda Liethaus from Germany were Resident Members of Graduate House from 1980 to 1981. They recently paid a visit to Graduate House in April, where they have very warm memories of meeting here in 1980.

Mart Snoek I studied Agricultural Engineering at the University of Wageningen in The Netherlands. I had an interest in doing an internship in Australia since my cousin in Sydney told me all about Australia. My professor in Wageningen knew Professor Keith Turner of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and the internship was fixed.

I worked for six months from September 1980 to March 1981 for the MUSHEEP project which aimed to develop new technology for sheep shearing as sheep farmers wanted to become independent from the Shearers Union and potential rate increases. The reality was that it turned out to be very difficult to successfully develop techniques that could eventually replace a skilled shearer.

My supervisor on the project was Dr Bruce Field, and we still keep in contact with him and his wife, Barbara, and also met during our recent visit to Australia.

Our Graduate House “romance” started in early November 1980. As usual after work at the University, I walked into the dining room and there sat a blonde girl alone at a table. This was Linda.

She had just arrived from Germany and was getting over her jet lag and getting acquainted with the habits of other students. I asked if I could join her and she said “yes”. We had dinner and started to chat. I had just bought an old Holden Kingswood

station wagon with the idea to tour around the country and visit my cousin in Sydney, etc. Of course I needed company because such a trip on your own is no fun. That first evening I asked Linda if she would be interested to join me.

In hindsight, this was quite confrontational and, no surprise, Linda said “I need to think about it”.

Anyway, days went by and we ate dinner together a few more times and we spent a weekend or two on the beach near Geelong. Furthermore, we played billiards upstairs and I taught Linda how to play. Apparently, the relationship grew and when I asked her again a few weeks later she said “yes”.

So we left Graduate House on Christmas Eve 1980 with the Holden loaded with a car tent and other luggage.

We found camping grounds easily, visited my cousin in Sydney, and kept driving north as far as Mackay.

There, we were advised not to travel further north due to a tornado that had hit Townsville and Cairns. We turned around and drove back to Sydney. From Sydney, we wanted to drive across to Adelaide but the Holden, with most of the luggage, was stolen. We had to travel back to Melbourne by train and finish our vacation.

I finished my project work and returned to Holland in March 1981 and Linda returned to Germany in April 1981. We stayed in touch.

We both finished our studies. After my graduation at Wageningen

University I started working for Cargill Inc, an agrifood multinational, and after 36 years I am still there as sales manager. Interestingly, I have a customer in Australia which is a national bakery: Goodman Fielder.

I visited them last month in Sydney.

Linda moved to Holland in 1984.

We got married in 1986, had two children (Lisa born in 1988 and Stefan born in 1990), and lived happily ever after!

Linda Liethaus I studied law at the University of Kiel and the University of Freiburg (Breisgau) in Germany. After graduating from the University of Freiburg I went to Hamburg, where I continued my studies by doing two years’ of practice at different places (a law firm, different courts, local authorities, etc.).

Our Members When I heard that it was possible to work with a lawyer abroad, I took my chance to go to Australia, a country I had dreamt of! In Melbourne, I joined, for some months, the office of the barrister, Mr Craig Porter, in Collins Street.

There I learned a lot about the Australian/English legal system.

I also had the opportunity to spend some time with a solicitor in Lygon Street — a small office with an Italian lawyer, who loved wine and good food. This was another world compared to the glamorous world of Collins Street, with very distinguished and rather conservative “English” people.

Graduate House really became a home for me, with very friendly guests and personnel. I remember especially Mr (William) Berry, looking across his glasses critically, but with a lot of humour and the very sophisticated Mrs (Barbara) Funder. She was a real lady and she gave me compliments when I finally decided to buy a coat suit so as to fit better in the very chic office at Collins Street, where trousers were

not really “allowed” and every lady was wearing pantyhose in the summer.

(And that was good, because it was freezing cold in there.)

Meeting Mart at Graduate House was the big, happy, wonderful coincidence of my life. When he walked into the dining room (the room behind the stairs), I thought: Wow, this guy is nice! It was — I think — love at first sight.

After returning to Germany, I finished my studies in Hamburg and then decided to go to the Netherlands to live with Mart.

I worked at the Goethe Institute Amsterdam Linda Liethaus and Mart Snoek during one of their (teaching German many outings as students. for Lawyers), at an insurance company as and with a notary at Rotterdam. At an underwriter, at the insurance the moment I work at a high school exchange at Amsterdam (Hudig teaching German again.

Shuntaro Iizuka Member, 2015 2018 Graduate House Research Scholarship Recipient

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, I am currently doing my PhD studies at the School of Social and Political Sciences, The University of Melbourne. Located in the field of public administration in the broader discipline of political science, I am looking at public sector reform in the case of Japan’s national government. In particular, I am exploring how government agencies are operating after experiencing extensive administrative reforms.

Firstly, I would like to briefly touch on the background of my research.

Governments in democracies have been under continuous pressure to reform and modernise. This is due to the perceived failure of traditional models of the welfare state, the changing nature of democracy, financial austerity, and globalisation.

Also, contemporary public sector organisations are expected to provide somewhat contradictory outputs. They are required to run themselves efficiently and effectively but, simultaneously, they are encouraged to provide highly qualified public service, which should be sufficiently supported by the relevant expertise and be responsive to democracy.

Faced with the similar societal problems and pursuant to the relevant Western cases, the Japanese government has implemented extensive administrative reforms, mimicking the Western cases to some degree via policy transfer. My project is to explore the consequences of such globally-influenced organisational and management reforms in Japan with the aim of post factum evaluation.

In doing so, I surveyed CEOs of Japanese government agencies, which covered a wide range of

topics, such as autonomy and control, perceptions of the relevant reforms, and the organisational value and culture.

To make my Japanese data comparable with foreign counterparts, I replicated the questionnaire developed by an equivalent international survey network for comparative public administration.

This previous global project had already surveyed approximately 20 jurisdictions which did not include Japan.

To fill in this gap, I conducted the Japanese version by adapting the global prototype questionnaire so that I could do a cross-national comparison. This is how I locate my research within the international network exploring comparative public administration.

Fortunately, for this research project of mine, I was awarded the Graduate House Research Scholarship in 2018. Thanks to this, I was able to attend the World Congress of International Political Science held in Brisbane in July 2018.

This is a global political science festival biennially organised by the International Political Science Association (IPSA). I presented a

paper focusing upon autonomy and control of government organisations with the data obtained through the aforementioned survey.

The feedback I gained on my research from peers will be of great benefit for the writing of my PhD thesis and other publications.

This opportunity also helped me enhance my academic network and keeps me updated with the latest academic trends.

I have long been a Melbourne lover since I stayed here as a short-term exchange student at Melbourne Grammar School, a sister school of mine — Waseda High School.

Thereafter, every time I visit Melbourne, the city charms me with

Our Members its rich culture, diversity, openness, mixture of the old and the new, and its ongoing growth as well.

After completing my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Waseda University and serving as a think tank researcher, I was determined to move to Melbourne to pursue my PhD research. I have been so fortunate to have such a fantastic opportunity; I am all the more lucky to work with my fabulous supervisors, Professor Janine O’Flynn and Associate Professor Helen Dickinson, and to be supported by the Melbourne Research Scholarship.

Last but, of course, not least, staying at Graduate House since 2016 has enriched my PhD life in Melbourne.

I am thankful to its great facilities and community for postgraduates and researchers within the geographical proximity to the University, which enables me to always enjoy being in a world-class academic community.

Mehak Masood Member, 2017 2018 Graduate House Bursary Recipient I am an environmentalist, not only professionally or academically, but at the core of my heart, as it runs in my legacy. My grandfather and father were environmentalists, so I have been born with this passion.

Given my love for the cause, I completed my B.Sc Honours in Environmental Sciences and M.Phil in Environmental Sciences at Kinnaird College for Women in Lahore, Pakistan.

I am fortunate to lead the environmental agenda in governmental and nongovernmental organisations like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), The British Council and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

My tenure of work has granted me the chance to display not

only my technical expertise but also my non-technical skills like communication, advocacy, policy development, monitoring and evaluation. My communication work involves seminars, policy dialogues, workshops and awareness walks.

In my eight years of work, I have been an advocate for environment and climate change issues, with a wide-ranging audience that includes governmental officials, students, diplomats, academia, religious leaders, homemakers and rural populations on various social and technical topics.

My Graduate House Journey When I received my confirmation and placement at The University of the Melbourne, my priority was to find accommodation near the university. So, in that search, I visited the Graduate House website and instantly made my decision to stay here. It’s my all-time dream, to enjoy the hostel life, since I have always been a day scholar all my life. Gladly, this wish came true over here. Also, the best part of staying at Graduate House is that you feel it’s like a home. The comfort and food are fantastic. The emotional support, networking, exposure and bonding that I received from Graduate House has made my Melbourne journey very beautiful and memorable.

My best moments over here have been: participation in the Rotary International Women’s Day Breakfast; International Women’s Day Dinner; and winning the Graduate House Bursary, which will help me attend the Climate Reality Training 2019 in Brisbane.

Also, being part of different committees has been an excellent learning experience.

dream to live and study here. After Pakistan won the cricket World Cup in 1992 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), it was top of my wish list. During my studies, I have had the chance to explore the Australia National Emission Inventories and Environmental laws and regulations. My fondness for the country and for knowledge compelled me to apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship. This was my first attempt and I was fortunate enough to be selected from thousands of applications. Living in Melbourne and studying at The University of Melbourne has made me a more mature and stronger human being. Mahroo Arshad Member, 2017 2018 Graduate House Bursary Recipient

My name is Mahroo and I am an Australia Awards Scholar from Pakistan studying a Master of Development Studies at The University of Melbourne. I am a passionate civil servant, determined to do my part to contribute towards the development and progress of my country. My philosophy of life is simple, though outdated in today’s world of marketing and communications: ‘actions speak louder than words’.

After graduating in pharmacy, I started my career as a pharmacist.

My first appointment was in a public hospital in a small town, where I worked for eight months before switching to the civil service. Working as a pharmacist, I recognised the shortage of resources and the mismanagement of available resources. The hospital had a small budget in which it had to ensure 24/7 provision of essential medicines. In doing so, I had to trade off the provision of free medicines for outpatients to the availability of emergency medicine. As the hospital was servicing poor patients who lacked money to purchase medicines, the provision of free medicine was vital for their health and wellbeing.

So I initiated a medicine bank with the help of fellow colleagues and local philanthropy. Through that bank, I was able to offer free medicine to patients. Soon I realised that I was working on a small scale, that these problems were structural in nature and, to make a difference, I needed to be at the helm of policy-making. Therefore I sat the Central Superior Service (CSS) Exam, a highly competitive exam conducted annually to select future civil servants.

After joining the civil service, I served in public affairs and policy positions at the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Ministry of Textile Industry, Ministry of Commerce and the Benazir Income Support Programme. Working in these ministries as a public affairs officer to the responsible minister blessed me with the opportunity to make a difference and serve my people.

During my tenure at the Benazir Income Support Programme, I worked on policies related to the empowerment and financial inclusion of the poorest women. This made me develop an interest in gender and social protection that brought me here to The University of Melbourne to study development studies.

In November last year, when I was preparing to leave for Australia, I was worried about my accommodation.

The thought of being alone and away from my family in a foreign land stressed me a lot. Safety and comfort were the prerequisites that I was looking for, so I booked myself to stay at Graduate House. It soon became my home in Melbourne with its warm welcome, ease and warmth.

Living at Graduate House has been wonderful, especially the communal living experience which has been really supportive. It was great to have fellow residents around when I felt a bit low, was missing home or felt stressed under the burden

of assignments. Melbourne, best known for its diversity, has offered much to my passion of ‘learning’.

Alison Harcourt Member, 1951

Life Member, Mrs Alison Harcourt has had a remarkable career in mathematics, and her work is still used today to solve complex problems.

Here is an article on Alison, written

by Tim Dodd, originally published in The Australian, 27th June 2018, titled Maths pioneer Alison Harcourt sees progress for women.

In 1960, mathematician Alison Harcourt published a seminal paper in the field of linear programming, which created the tool for computers to do something they were uniquely good at: solving optimisation problems.

Over the decades, as computing power grew, her tool, developed with co-author Ailsa Land, was widely used in transport logistics, shift rostering and even cancer radiotherapy decisions — areas in which an optimal answer had to be selected from countless, complex alternatives.

But few knew that Harcourt, who resigned her senior lecturer post at The University of Melbourne in 1971 when she became a mother, was the AG Doig (her maiden name) who coauthored the 1960 paper titled An Automatic Method for Solving Discrete Programming Problems.

For Harcourt, once off the academic escalator it was hard to get back on.

“There was no possibility to return to do any decent research,” she says.

She returned to the university in 1979 as a casual tutor in statistics and, nearly 40 years later at the age of 88, is still tutoring students for six hours a week and marking their papers.

Kate Smith-Miles, who joined The University of Melbourne last year as a professor and specialises in optimisation, says she learned methods that Harcourt and Land described in the 1960 paper when she was a student. “No one told me these were invented by two women.

As a young female mathematician, if I’d known they would have been role models,” she says.

Nor did Smith-Miles know until relatively recently that AG Doig was an Australian who had studied at The University of Melbourne and still taught there.

Last week she met Harcourt for the first time when she hosted a panel session at the university featuring Harcourt and two visiting female mathematicians who also have made contributions to the optimisation field. Smith-Miles says that Harcourt and Land’s method, which became known as “branch and bound”, came into its own when the power of modern computers became available. But even computers aren’t powerful enough

to search all possible combinations of an optimisation problem, and need help. “Their method tells you where not to search,” she says.

Smith-Miles looks with awe at Harcourt’s achievement. Her 1960 paper has nearly 3,000 citations.

Smith-Miles’s most cited paper has about 800. She says her career, in contrast to Harcourt’s, has benefited from policies that supported women such as her to succeed in academe, which weren’t there in the 1960s and 70s.

She says that today, for the most recent generation of female mathematicians there is even more support, including travel awards and childcare support when they attend the all-important academic conferences.

In contrast, when Smith-Miles’s children were young she says she did not travel to conferences for about five years. She got through.

“I’m very well aware in my generation not everybody was so lucky,” she says.

Today, The University of Melbourne and Monash University both have maths positions that are available only to women, in an effort to improve gender equity.

Our Members Jeewani Nallaperuma is using machine learning techniques to solve optimisation problems; she enjoys support from the Australian Postgraduate Research Intern program to link her research with industry, and is working as an intern at Aurecon. She says she finds women are welcomed into engineering careers.

In contrast, when Harcourt started her maths degree at The University of Melbourne in 1947, she was one of only two women studying the subject.

She also studied physics, but found herself at a disadvantage because nothing in her schooling had prepared her for the practical work.

“I felt the physics school, as a general thing, was very anti-women,” she says. But Harcourt found support from the maths department and, during her University of Melbourne master’s degree, went

to the London School of Economics, where she worked with Land, her co‑author on the paper.

But she never went on to pursue a doctorate. “At that time there might have been one or two other people interested in linear programming. There was no mentor, no one to talk with,” she says.

Harcourt looks around now and sees how opportunities for women have changed. “They are much closer to equality,” she says. But she still believes that men rise faster than women in academic life.

Harcourt went on to make other contributions, drawing attention to inadequacies in randomising the order of election candidates on ballot papers and giving evidence to a parliamentary committee in the 80s.

Today she continues to tutor students and mark their work.

Juanjuan Wu Member, 2017 The 2018 Margaret Watson Travelling Fellowship and the Robert Heaton Research Support Award “Do not make the family lose face” I was born and brought up in a small village surrounded by mountains in a remote rural town of Hunan, a province located in the middle reach of the Yangtze River in southern central China. I am the eldest of two children born to my barely-educated parents. Shadowed by China’s one-child policy, my parents were farmers who needed more labour to earn their basic livelihood. Like many other farmers in that situation in the early 1990s, they were allowed to have a second child given that I, their firstborn, was a girl. The second baby was also a girl.

When I was three, my mother, during the seventh month of her pregnancy, was asked to abort her third baby, a boy. Despite the fact that my father and grandparents

tried every means, like many other families at that time, to protect and hide her from local officials, the abortion was performed.

At the age of 12, I started my life in a boarding school in our town.

A year later, I had my first English lesson. In 2006, I was accepted into our town’s best high school, where I read a bilingual version of a classic work of English literature, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. This stirred my passion for English literature. In September 2009, I enrolled in Shandong Normal University in Jinan, a city some 1,400km northeast of my birthplace, taking English as my major in the hope of landing a decent job after graduation. Instead of hunting for jobs, I resumed my tertiary journey at Fudan University in Shanghai in 2013, pursuing my Master’s in English literature. So far, I was the first in our village to go to university and to get a Master’s. I had not let my parents lose face. My sister on the other hand travelled the life road taken by most of the girls in our village. She quit school at age 15, and three years later married a young fellow from the neighbouring village. She then joined an army of migrant workers employed in a big but strange city. Her birth to two healthy, smart boys, has won my parents’ hearts. She has more or less saved their face, though in a different way.

After graduation in June 2016, I became an editor in a publishing house in Hangzhou. Participating in a project about foreign travellers to China, I gleaned fascinating stories

by English women who travelled in my country from the 1860s to the 1930s. Impressed by their courage in challenging rigid gender binaries, breaking many boundaries in order to make their voices heard, I decided to do a PhD, focusing on Victorian women’s travel narratives to China and the entangled relations of mobility, emotion, gender and empire. Applying for an appropriate programme and scholarship was a journey full of ups and downs.

Fortunately, I was awarded a University of Melbourne Research Scholarship, and my dream to study overseas came true.

Feeling at home in Melbourne Then at last came my long-awaited day of starting my adventures in Melbourne. On 27th February 2017, I commenced my PhD in English and Theatre Studies, in the School of Culture and Communication at The University of Melbourne. I was warmly welcomed into my new life by a very relaxing lunch, kindly offered by my supervisor Professor Deirdre Coleman at University House. For the first three months, I had been sharing a small apartment with a Chinese girl. My first experience overseas was getting worse as I felt increasingly isolated.

Deirdre sensed my loneliness. She recommended I move into Graduate House and introduced me to Parisa Shiran, one of her PhD students and a resident there. Parisa invited me to Graduate House for dinner. Thanks to Parisa’s help, I was fortunate in securing accommodation at Graduate House in May 2017. Since then my life in a foreign country has changed for the better.

The Monthly Luncheon, College Table, Women’s Forum and Australian-Asian Association of Victoria’s events conducted here have provided me with ample opportunities to interact and network with brilliant minds from across the professions, inspiring me in various ways. I have also benefited a lot from the JobFocus Group. The English Conversation Corner has played an important role not only in improving my English, but also in enhancing my confidence and overcoming many of my shortcomings. The Graduate Union also provides graduates with scholarships and I am indeed grateful to have received two of them.

Being part of such a friendly, convivial and vibrant graduate community has made all the difference to my PhD life. They have guided me in learning English and enlightened me with many open discussions about ‘civilisation’, ‘education’, ‘character and personality’, ‘freedom of thought’, ideas of John Stuart Mill and many other topics.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all these lovely friends who I have come to know at Graduate House. They have made a big difference to me. As a girl raised in a closed-off and far-flung village in China, educated in a traditional Chinese way, I came to Australia with a cultural package crammed with certain cultural notions and habits. For example, I was trapped by Chinese ideals of femininity without knowing how they have restrained me in many aspects; I didn’t dare to speak out, even in group discussions; I had deep fears around socialising; I lacked the courage to talk to people in higher positions; I didn’t have confidence in myself, my work and everything that I had done; I didn’t step out of my comfort zone to try different things.

My project: Is transcultural friendship possible in the age of high imperialism?

Thanks to the most helpful supervision from Professor Deirdre Coleman and Dr Grace Moore, I am gradually refining my research project. So far, I am looking at narratives of travels made to China by a selection of Western women from the late-Victorian to the Edwardian era. I am making an interdisciplinary dive into the past to retrieve women’s nearly-lost voices in the history of international relations between West and East, between the British Empire and China. I hope to present a more nuanced picture in which, in the age of high imperialism, women’s narratives articulate varied forms of transcultural friendship and cooperation with Chinese people.

Their travels and writings reveal a cosmopolitan vision that goes beyond narrow nationalism and imperialism, encompassing all humanity across boundaries of race, nation and culture.

Thanks to Graduate House’s Margaret Watson Travelling Fellowship and the Robert Heaton Research Support Award, as well as the Arts Graduate Research International Grant, generously provided by the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne, I made research trips to Cambridge, Oxford, London and Edinburgh in the UK from 18th August to 13th September.

I also presented some findings from my field work at an international conference, ‘Borders and Crossing’, in Pula, Croatia, from 14th to 17th September. This was my first visit to Britain and Europe. Its influence on me is surely life-changing. My sincere thanks again for all the help and support extended to me by Graduate House, my supervisors and my dear friends here in Melbourne. vvv

Louis Coutts Member, 1960 A Travelogue on Paris

Spring in Paris It was a lovely warm Parisian spring afternoon in the Luxembourg gardens and many of the Parisians were sitting in casual disarray beneath the lush green canopies of the abundant and ancient deciduous sentinels that had endured the cruelty of winter to enjoy this moment.

And it was the moment that attracted me. The colour of the variety of summer clothing was intensified by the occasional speckle of sunlight that had found its way through the protecting leaves. Some were reading, some talking, some chastising their children, and some were just sitting. I was immediately reminded of Manet and of his wonderful scenes of Parisian people.

I have been so privileged to see so many of his paintings but today I really saw them for the first time, here in the Luxembourg gardens. In a moment of revelation, I caught the moment in my mind’s eye and it is still there, but it wouldn’t be had Manet not captured it for me in his paintings.

To the unsuspecting models posing in this beautiful afternoon setting, the moment that I caught them and stored them in my mind’s eye had passed for them as it has passed the many people in Manet’s crowds. The moment that I captured no longer exists for the people sitting in the Luxembourg gardens. And that is the genius of Manet, because he was able to capture those moments and immortalise them with effervescent colour.

But there was more than capturing the moment. Manet enriched it.

He could have taken a photograph but that would only have been a pictorial. Manet brought the moment to life and those people are eternalised in a dimension of beauty that soothes all the tension of living.

The moments of peaceful gaiety that he captured with irregularly beautiful imagery are moments when people are at peace and we can still live those moments when we are privileged to look upon a

Manet painting scene. The moment and its peace are translated into beauty that still touches us long after the moment was lost to the people in the scene.

That elusive subject of beauty recurred when I visited a gallery which exhibited Monet. The water lilies that Monet depicted in so many different iterations, the Rouen Cathedral that engaged him in its different stages of light, the clouds that are more lifelike than clouds, despite the licence he took in splashing them on his canvas are all moments that were real to the water lilies and the clouds and the hay fields but they no longer exist except on the ordinary pieces of canvas which Monet transformed with his brush and oils. But he saw something more than the moment.

He saw in his subjects the essence of beauty. Thus with broad brushes he unveiled their soul so that the moment is captured forever, and the soul of nature speaks to us and soothes our tensions.

Monet more than captures the moment, he unveils its secrets so that the beauty of the moment becomes immortalised.

To me, what Manet and Monet have done (and many other artists) is to immortalise moments and transform them into indescribable beauty that

soothe the soul. Oh, that I could be a Manet or a Monet and immortalise some of the most precious moments of my life that wander elusively off into the past. vvv

National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF)

National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF) 2018 Faith and Values 23 to 26th August 2018 rd

The 200 Delegates at the NSLF in August 2018.

The National Student Leadership Forum is a four-day conference that brings together today’s leaders and the leaders of tomorrow to discuss openly who they are and what they believe.

Each year, The Graduate Union nominates two students aged 18 to 26 years to attend the National Student Leadership Forum in Canberra. The Forum is on the importance of values and personal beliefs as a foundation for

leadership. People from all different faiths, non-faiths and cultural backgrounds are welcome to apply.

The Graduate Union was represented by Resident Members Joshua Rhee and Daniela Yaneva.

Their stories are below.

Joshua Rhee Member, 2017 NSLF Reflection Most people in Australia will remember the 23rd to 26th of August 2018 as the period during which the Honourable Malcolm Turnbull became the fourth Prime Minister since 2010 to be ousted by party room politics rather than the will of the people. However, during this very same period of time, deep within Parliament House — out of sight of the cameras, and

unbeknownst to the reporters typing away at stories about the failing leadership in our nation’s capital — a group of around 200 young people from all around Australia were just about to embark on an incredible journey where they would learn unforgettable lessons about leadership, faith and values.

These were the delegates of the 2018 National Student Leadership

Forum (NSLF) on Faith and Values, and — thanks to the support of Graduate House — I was lucky enough to be one of them.

I first learned about the NSLF through an internal advertisement at Graduate House. I didn’t know much about the Forum at the time — only that it would involve participation of young people from a diversity of intellectual, cultural, and religious

National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF) backgrounds. As someone who is interested in finding ways that people with fundamentally different values and beliefs can co-exist with one another, the prospect of interacting with, and learning from, such a diverse group of young leaders was enough motivation for me to apply (although if I’m honest, the fact that the Forum involved staying at the Hyatt Hotel over four days did not go unnoticed).

Day 1: People and Parliament My first impression of the NSLF was a crowded conference room at the Hyatt Hotel. The buzz of excited and nervous energy filled the entire

area, as 200 delegates from all over Australia tried to orient themselves to their new surroundings. Most were experiencing the all too relatable feeling of vulnerability and excitement as they introduced themselves to someone who they had never met before, with the hope that it would lead to a new moment of human connection.

The first official item on the schedule was meeting our small groups — the eight extraordinary people with whom I would spend the most time during the Forum. I didn’t know it at the time, but I would eventually come to share my story, insecurities, and vulnerabilities with these people, and they would return that trust in kind by sharing their own stories and vulnerabilities.

After completing brief introductions at the Hyatt, we all headed over to Parliament House, where the first scheduled activity was sitting in during Question Time in the Senate. Due to the leadership spill, the Senate was almost empty, with only

eight or so Senators present.

Yet, this did not seem to prevent the Senators present from diligently pushing through the day’s order of business. During our sitting, we saw the Senate consider the Telecommunications (Regional Broadband Scheme) Charge Bill, and also agree to an amendment made by the House of Representatives to a Bill which introduces a civil penalty regime for non-consensual sharing of intimate images online.

Each item of business brought before the Senate was subjected to the same formal and monotonous process: “those in favour say Aye”, “those opposed say No”, “I think the Ayes have it”. It was an interesting juxtaposition to the excitement and intrigue that had been associated with the leadership spill, and a subtle reminder that the work of running a country is often less dramatic than the 6pm news might lead you to believe.

Following question time, we moved from the Senate to the Parliamentary Theatrette for our first seminar on Leadership, Faith and Values. The seminar was followed by a period of brief uncertainty, where the organisers frantically tried to ascertain whether the Prime Minister would be available to attend the scheduled question and answer session. Unfortunately, we were eventually informed that the Prime Minister could not be there (we would find out that this was because he had officially announced that he would resign if a majority of his party signed a petition calling for a leadership vote), however, the Leader of the Opposition (who had far greater job security that day) was able to attend. After the Q & A, we split off into our small groups and were invited into the deep recesses of Parliament House for an intimate meeting with a Member of Parliament in his or her natural habitat. My group was lucky enough to meet three members of parliament, the Hon Tony Abbott, Michael Andrews, and Craig Kelly MP. This was the first time in my life I had met so many politicians in a single day (my previous record being ▶ zero), and I found the following Page 37

National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF) insights quite interesting: first, all of the politicians I encountered were far more charismatic in person than their television interviews would suggest; second, these same politicians were remarkably attentive listeners; and third, that the Hon Tony Abbott’s unmistakable laugh was indeed genuine, and often used in ordinary conversation.

Day 2: A Day of Remembrance The second day started with the Lone Piper and Poppy Laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. To me, this was one of the most moving experiences of the Forum. The Poppy Laying ceremony was preceded by an address from Dr Brendan Nelson, the Director of the Australian War Memorial. In that address, Dr Nelson mentioned that one of the major inspirations for the War Memorial was a young soldier dying on the battlefield, who had asked one simple question “Will I be remembered?”. Throughout Primary and Secondary school, the ANZACs had always been described to me as extraordinary heroes, larrikins who were fearless in the face of impossible odds. Yet, this story of the young soldier, painted the ANZACs in a different light. As people with the all too relatable desire to be remembered — to have a life that was meaningful. This realisation that the ANZACs were such ordinary individuals, made the stories of their courage and sacrifice all the more extraordinary.

After the seminar, while we were having lunch on the front lawn of Parliament House, it was announced that the Hon Scott Morrison had become the new Prime Minister of Australia. The news was not taken well by the protesters in front of Parliament House, as many had prepared placards against the Hon Peter Dutton MP. Day 3: A Day of Service and Extraordinary Stories The third day began with an inspiring speech by Associate Professor Munjed Al Muderis, an orthopaedic surgeon who came to Australia by boat as a refugee. He spoke of how his refusal to break his Hippocratic oath, when ordered to mutilate political dissidents back in his homeland, had resulted in himself becoming a target of the government, and forced him to flee to Australia as a refugee. His message was a simple but powerful one: when you get the chance to help someone, do it, because you may never get another opportunity.

After breakfast, I heard the extraordinary story of Rev Luther Tarpeh, who was born under a mango tree in Liberia, because both his country and his family were too poor for him to be born in a hospital. He told us about how his mother had made it her entire life’s work to ensure that he received an education, and that with her dying breath, she had said that she had Following the War Memorial, we sacrificed everything for him, so that headed back to Parliament House he could do the same for others.

And so, despite starting out with nothing but a desire to serve others, Rev Luther began his extraordinary journey. Firstly he became the voice of the Liberian people on a radio show with millions of listeners, and finally to be on Joshua with friends from Graduate House. the verge of

founding Liberia’s first independent university that will be completely free of corruption.

In the afternoon, we were called upon to put the idea of servant leadership into action by going out into the suburbs of Canberra and doing some community service.

For my small group, this involved levelling out a front yard, and taming the largest bramble bush I had ever seen. As someone who usually considers himself an ‘indoors man’, this was initially a somewhat daunting prospect. However, I found once I got into the rhythm of things, cutting down brambles proved to be somewhat therapeutic, and also very rewarding once I saw the (only slightly crooked) results of our handiwork.

General Reflections These are some of the more memorable stories from the NSLF, and there are many more incredible moments and events that I did not have the space to share here.

When I first applied to be one of the Graduate House nominees to the NSLF, I did so thinking that it would be an incredible opportunity to hear about the faith and values of others. What I did not expect was how much the Forum would call on me to reflect on my own faith. Throughout the Forum, I heard stories of extraordinary leadership that were made possible by faith.

During the seminars we were taught that faith is “confidence about the future in the midst of uncertainty”, and that while values can change, faith remains constant.

Most importantly, when speaking to my peers, I heard about how their own faith has given them strength to overcome obstacles and allowed them to achieve things that they thought were impossible. I don’t mean to pretend that attending the Forum has allowed me to find my faith. But, at the very least, it has made me appreciate the need to start looking. vvv

National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF)

Let me be a little braver When temptation bids me waver Let me strive a little harder To be all that I should be Let me be a little meeker With the Brother that is weaker Let me think more of my neighbour And a little less of me I stood at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on the 24th August 2018, listening to Dr Brendan Nelson, the Director of the Australian War Memorial, recite the above poem, which was found on a crumpled piece of paper, held by a fallen soldier taking his last breaths. The words spoken not only reflected my experience in Canberra over the four days, but also illustrated a number of lessons to continue to live by.

I was fortunate to have been chosen to attend the 2018 National Student Leadership Forum, along with 200

other incredible delegates from all around the world. In the 21st century in particular, ‘leadership’ as a concept is something we often hear about. We see self-help books written about it, and Ted-talks focused on ‘The Qualities of a Good Leader’, but rarely question the values and beliefs that lie beneath one’s leadership. When people lead, they are typically doing so because they value or believe in what they are promoting. And whilst leadership is portrayed as a positive quality, leadership on its own, if driven by the wrong values, can lead

to disastrous outcomes. The forum did not focus on a vague ideal of ‘leadership’ but rather the specific and individual values and beliefs that drive each individual’s leadership. It was thus more about why people led, rather than how effectively or ineffectively they led. I got to hear why people were passionate about the different causes they aimed to promote, what made them get out of bed every morning, and how these values translated into effective leadership in the long run.

I heard stories about refugee camps and harsh immigration paths, and about love and suffering amongst it all. What surprised me the most about all of the stories however was that I never thought, by looking at or speaking to the individuals on a surface level, that these were the experiences each had gone through.

achievements. One of the most important takeaways from the NSLF for me was that true leadership required less of advancing one’s own interests and desires forward, and more of promoting a greater cause — whether this be the community’s needs, or the nation’s.

“Let me think more of my neighbour and a little less of me” During dinners at the Forum, we were presented with some of the most incredible speakers, having undergone countless experiences of struggle and resilience. One such story we were fortunate enough to hear was the story of Carolyn and David Stedman. Carolyn and David are currently in their 70s, and have been married for nearly 50 years.

For the past 42 years, they have dedicated their lives to providing care for over 70 foster children!

Many of the children Carolyn and David took in were previously abused, abandoned, born with addictions, and experienced severe mental illness. Regardless of the challenges, Carolyn and David took them in and cared for each one as one of their own. The couple spoke about how their lives consisted of sleepless nights, and having to administer doses of cocaine to small babies as many were born with

addictions. What was most difficult however was that Carolyn shared that many times she was not told what happened to the children after they had gone back to the foster homes, and their adopted parents rarely contacted her with updates.

This story exemplified true selflessness and the importance of a stable family environment in the beginning stages of a child’s development. More importantly however, it exemplified the importance of contributing to the community through something as simple as caring, without expecting anything in return. To me, Carolyn and David will always serve as a perfect example of servant leadership.

“Let me be a little meeker with the brother that is weaker” One of the greatest lessons taken from the Forum for me was the power of compassion. During the four days in Canberra, I met the most extraordinary people and listened to some of the most breathtaking and heartbreaking stories. I heard about individuals being born in the jungle due to the militia burning their village down and all the pregnant women fleeing.

The delegates of the NSLF volunteered together in surrounding communities, helping out with anything the local residents needed. This included tasks such as raking leaves, watering plants and gardening, but also tasks such as walking pets or simply speaking to residents about things they had recently gone through. The word ‘help’ meant different things to each person, and the community service was a great opportunity to explore practically what it means to serve others.

And whilst at times this is desirable, the National Student Leadership Forum taught me about the importance of working for something greater. All of the elements of the forum left a lasting impact both in how I understand ‘leadership’ as well as how I practice it daily. vvv

Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Australia His Excellency Mr Y Kristiarto S Legowo

On 29th January 2018, The Graduate Union hosted a delegation from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Canberra and the Consulate-General of the Republic of Indonesia, Victoria, led by His Excellency Mr Y Kristiarto S Legowo, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Australia.

The delegation included Mr Zaenal Arifin, Consul, Consulate-General of the Republic of Indonesia and Mr Prima Januar Sastrawiria; Mr Billy Wibisono, First Secretary, Information and Socio-Cultural Affairs, and Mr Muhammad Imran Hanafi, Education and Cultural Attaché from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Canberra.

The dignitaries were hosted by Dr Ken V Loughnan AO, President of The Graduate Union and Dr Kerry Bennett, CEO/Head of College. The delegation was given a guided tour of Graduate House after their meeting, and afternoon tea was served in the Johnston Library.

The delegation presented The Graduate Union with an ornamental gift (pictured, right). It depicts a ‘gunungan’ (from ‘gunung’ which means ‘mountain’), also known as ‘kayon’ (forest), which plays the most important role

in every wayang performance, the traditional Javanese shadow puppet show. Physically shaped as a symmetrical mountain, and decorated with plants and animals, the gunungan symbolises the universe, natural events, and human emotions in every story.

His Excellency Mr Legowo expressed his appreciation for the afternoon tea and the opportunity to learn more about both our residential college and our membership association of graduates.

United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia Mr Ricky M Cheng Executive Vice President United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia

On 2nd March, The Graduate Union held a welcome lunch for the Executive Vice President, United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, Mr Ricky M Cheng and Ms Vivica Xiong, Progam Officer for United Board. The lunch was held in the Johnston Library.

The United Board has had a significant impact on higher education in Asia.

Mr Cheng’s role is to raise major funds for the United Board’s programs, which benefits some 80 network institutions, and to communicate with current and potential donors and friends to spread the significant impact of their work. In his role as Executive Vice President, Mr Cheng has responsibility for development and gives special attention to the organisation’s strategic planning and future directions.

In attendance were the CEO/ Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett; members of the Women’s Forum and the Melba Group; the Fellows' academic mentors, Professor John Polesel and Associate Professor Kate MacNeill; and support mentors, Dr Max Stephens and Professor Deirdre Coleman.

The United Board Fellows program is designed for the leadership development of mid-career faculty and administrators from Asian colleges and universities.

Through this one-year program, the United Board develops dynamic leaders who advance whole person education within their home institutions.

The United Board is a not-for-profit charity registered as tax-exempt and non-profit in the United States and is a public charity in Hong Kong.

The United Board was founded in 1922, working with 13 Christian universities in China. Following suspension of their work in China in 1951, United Board worked with more than 80 education institutions (predominantly universities) across Asia, including China following a formal invitation to return in 1980.

The United Board’s purpose is to support institutions to improve the quality of education. They sponsor professional training for faculty, administrators, and trustees, and foster linkages and networks among Asian institutions of higher

Welcome to Graduate House education. United Board fund programs by seeking contributions from individuals, foundations and alumni associations of Asian institutions to supplement the income from their endowment.

Dr Anne Lan K Candelaria Dr Anne Candelaria is the Associate Dean for graduate programs at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines as well as a faculty member of the Department of Political Science.

Dr Candelaria previously led the Ateneo Center for Asian Studies and the Ateneo Center for Educational Development. To make education a more meaningful experience, she continuously advocates for democratic governance of schools, bottom-up construction of the curricula, and research that connects community needs to public policy.

Dr Candelaria earned her PhD in education management at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, specialising in policy and leadership studies. Her Master’s

degree is in political science from Ateneo de Manila University.

Dr Candelaria looks forward to learning from peers and mentors in and around Asia, particularly about how graduate education can play a role in narrowing knowledge, technology, and poverty gaps.

Dr Candelaria's academic mentor during her stay here is Professor John Polesel from the Centre for Vocational and Educational Policy, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, The University of Melbourne.

Dr Lakshmi Priya Daniel Dr Lakshmi Priya Daniel serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Stella Maris College in Chennai, India.

Previously she was Dean of student affairs at Stella Maris College from 2014 to 2017.

As Dean, one of her responsibilities was to help students from economically underprivileged backgrounds attain scholarships from private trusts and organisations.

Dr Daniel has been actively involved in the conduct of various initiatives focusing on eco-concerns, curriculum development, and student-centric training.

Dr Daniel earned her doctorate from the University of Madras, Chennai, specialising in gender and art. She believes that the Fellows Program will give her the opportunity to bring about holistic development in the arena of education and help empower women from various backgrounds who are seeking excellence enhanced by spiritual values and ethics.

Dr Daniel's academic mentor during her stay is Associate Professor Kate MacNeill, Director of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) in the Faculty of Arts, The University of Melbourne.

We wish Dr Candelaria and Dr Daniel all the very best during their two-month stay at Graduate House. vvv

Mrs Margaret Munro Hendy, 1959 Margaret Hendy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where she spent her childhood. Once the war broke out she was sent to Kirkcudbrightshire, where she assisted in setting up a Girlguiding Stewartry branch.

Returning to Glasgow, she skipped sixth form in secondary school and went straight to the University of Glasgow, where she gained a Master of Arts and a Diploma in Social Studies. After university she worked for several years to then migrate to Australia in 1957.

In Australia, Margaret worked in several teaching positions and met her husband, Alan, and they married in 1969. Alan and Margaret travelled extensively and enjoyed many wonderful journeys together. Margaret retired in 1984. Alan became ill in 2000 and passed away in 2005. Margaret remained an active community member, keeping an interest in the arts, attending Scots Church in the city and is a long term Probus Club and Graduate House Member. Margaret Hendy passed away on the 16th June 2018.

His Hon Francis Bannatyne Lewis, 1975

Dr Jean Barrie was born in Windsor, Victoria in 1923.

After her secondary studies, she found work as a Laboratory Assistant in the Pathology Department in the Women’s Hospital, where under Biochemist Dr Vera Krieger, Dr Barrie trained in basic clinical biochemistry tests. Her interest would lead to her gaining a further qualification, leaving the hospital in 1944, to go to work at the CSIR (later CSIRO).

Francis Bannatyne Lewis was born in 1935. Son of Brian Bannatyne Lewis, a Professor of Architecture and Hilary Archer, he was one of six children. His early years were spent in London, then moving to Melbourne in the late‑1940s.

Attending the Melbourne Technical College (later RMIT University) she completed a Diploma in Applied Chemistry in 1951 and returned to the Women’s Hospital with her qualification. Working in the Blood Transfusion Service she became a Senior Graduate and Deputy (to Dr Krieger) in Serology, in a newly formed department by the end of the 1950s. Dr Barrie gained a Bachelor of Science in 1961 and went on to do a PhD in immunology at The University of Melbourne, completing her PhD in 1966.

Continuing to work at the Women’s Hospital, Dr Barrie took over from Dr Krieger, when she retired, and worked for 22 years as Chief Serologist until her retirement in 1988. Dr Barrie passed away at the age of 95 on the 13th June 2018.

Francis studied law, and successfully took the bar examination. He worked as a Barrister and became a Judge at the County Court of Victoria. He was married and is survived by his children, step-children and four siblings. He passed away on the 24th August 2017 at the age of 82.

Mr Geoffrey Donald Shaw, 1975 Geoffrey Donald Shaw was born to Maurice and Lilah Shaw in Queensland in 1940.

He became a Member of The Graduate Union in 1975 and later went on to be a Life Member. He passed away at the age of 77 in Beaudesert, Queensland in November 2017.

Mr Kenneth Frederick Hince OAM, 1968

Barry John Henderson was born in 1934 in Melbourne and grew up in Newtown, Geelong. He attended Geelong College and won a bursary in 1951 and several sporting prizes in Cricket and Football before captaining the football team in 1952. He was School Prefect in the same year.

Kenneth Frederick Hince OAM was born in Melbourne in 1926 and attended The University of Melbourne.

Kenneth served briefly in the Second World War, and after the War returned to study Music and English, working as the Music Librarian at Melbourne University from 1949 to 1952. By 1960, he had opened a secondhand bookshop in Melbourne, and with the business prospering, he gave up teaching in 1964.

Barry attended university, completing a Bachelor of Commerce and went on to manage his father’s business ‘Vogue shoes’ which expanded significantly in the 1960s to 13 stores. He then sold the chain to Clarkes of England in 1979.

Kenneth eventually became a music critic, working for The Bulletin from 1961 till 1964 and taking up the inaugural music critic position for The Australian in 1964.

Mr Hince moved to The Age in 1978 where he remained until 1994.

Barry married Janet Gordon in 1960 and they had three children. After the sale of ‘Vogue’, Barry went into cattle breeding, and began breeding bulls, which over time built one of Australia’s top studs. He died on the 15th November 2017 at the age of 83.

Regarded as one of the foremost antiquarian booksellers in Australia, Kenneth remained an antiquarian bookseller for 60 years until the age of 91. Mr Hince OAM died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on the 19th February 2018 in Euroa.

Mr Adrian Kenneth Lowe, 1966

Mrs Betty Glynne, 1952

Adrian Kenneth Lowe was born in 1928. He grew up in Wagga Wagga, and studied Medicine, going on to become a surgeon. He then became a member of the civilian medical and surgical teams in the Vietnam War. He received two medals for his work during the War.

Betty Glynne (nee Law) was born on the 4th June 1928 and gained a Diploma of Education from The University of Melbourne in 1950. She joined The Graduate Union in 1952 and later took up a Life Membership.

Mr Barry John Henderson, 1956

He married Tricia and they had three children. After the War, Adrian went on to become a well-known surgeon in his local area. Mr Lowe passed away peacefully in Wagga Wagga on the 20th March 2017.

Betty later married and had three children — Mary, Sara and Anna. Mrs Glynne came to live in Ashwood Aged Care and passed away at the age of 89 years on the 27th April 2018. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
