The Annual General Meeting of The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne will be held at Graduate House on Thursday 26 May at 5.30pm. The Agenda for the AGM is enclosed.

On 16 March The Committee of Convocation met at Graduate House University Club. This is the only meeting Convocation has convened at Graduate House and members were first escorted on a tour of the facilities by the Secretary-Warden and the marketing consultant. In addition to the usual Agenda of receiving University reports and statutes and regulations, Professor Peter McPhee and the new executives of the Alumni Office addressed Convocation. Members then adjourned for a dinner which honoured Dr Douglas Daines, Dr Douglas Daines Vice-Principal (Property and Buildings) for his development of University Square, with its harmonious blend of nineteenth-century terrace houses and twenty-first century academic buildings. Secondly, the President of The Graduate Union thanked Dr Daines for his pivotal role with the tunnel project to the underground car park beneath Graduate House - the $4.1m from the University made the new building a reality. Particularly impressive was the blending of technology and architecture that created a synergistic construction. Dr Daines then addressed Convocation on A Vision For The Future Of Bio21 Development. Dr Daines is the only remaining member of the Bio21 group formed by Professor Alan Gilbert and spoke with a deep understanding of the important ramifications of this initiative. This was an impressive overview which gave information to enhance the visit to Bio21 by Convocation later this year. The reaction of Members of Convocation was that the fine facilities and ambience of the Graduate House provide a convenient opportunity for future meetings

Vale The Reverend Dr Davis McCaughey AC Past President of the Graduate Union The Reverend Dr Davis McCaughey AC was one of the most prominent citizens to have been President of the Graduate Union. He was born John Davis McCaughey in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1914, and was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1942, after completing theology at Belfast, following studies at Cambridge University, and New College, Edinburgh. He did not take charge of a parish, but instead worked with the YMCA, the British Council of Churches, and the Student Christian Movement of Great Britain and Ireland. A long period of association with the University of Melbourne commenced in 1953 with his appointment as Professor of New Testament at Ormond College, and continued as Master of Ormond from 1959 to 1979. He joined the University Council in the 1970s, and was deputy chancellor from 1978-1979. After a temporary period overseas, he rejoined the University Council as a representative of the graduates in 1982, and was again appointed Deputy Chancellor. He was also commissioned to prepare a report on the University’s relations with its graduates, and this recommended the formation of a new umbrella organisation, the Alumni Association, originally financed by subscription, but later fully financed by the University, and now automatically embracing all graduates of Melbourne University. In 1981 Davis was chosen by the Graduate Council to become its President, following the death of Maurice Brown. The Vice-President normally introduces a new President at an evening dinner at Graduate House, but on this occasion was unable to be present. The Graduate Council Chairman, Stan Dean, was incapacitated due to an accident, and so, as Vice-Chairman, I was asked to welcome Davis at the evening dinner, although at that time I had not met him, and had to rely on a copy of the entry in Who’s Who in Australia, for background details. Very soon I came to know him well, as a colleague and friend. The many public speeches he delivered were always something special, and he was always ready to provide a copy when requested. He was the first President who regularly attended Graduate Council meetings, and contributed valuably to our discussions. As Governor of Victoria he introduced many innovations, particularly minimising pomp and ceremony, doing away with military ADC’s , Rolls Royces and first class air Continued pg 2
