Q&A: Quality Education (SDG #4) The state of employment

What is the World of Work?

The World of Work is changing constantly, and rapidly. Traditional roles are becoming more fluid, where employers are looking for talent that can adapt, change and disrupt across the organisation.

Additionally, employees want to be able to learn skills across the same arena. This is great news for graduates, who will be presented with many more opportunities than just the specialism that they are training in. For example, Academic Staff recently introduced a new law graduate to a company in the Education Industry that needed a Compliance Officer. So although the graduate trained to be a lawyer, she is now working in compliance across the entire company, learning much more that she expected.

Where is the Work?

The Department of Employment’s ‘Employment Outlook’ report was recently released. In this report it is estimated that total employment would increase by 1,166,400 (10%) to reach 12,776,500 by November 2019. It is also predicted that Healthcare, Education and Training, Construction, and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services would provide more than half of the employment growth to November 2019. Additionally it is forecasted that the labour market will continue to favour higher skilled workers (those with a Bachelor degree or higher), with an employment increase of 13.1% or 466,700.

What, in your experience, made the study-to-work transition easier?

Employment early, is key to success. Like many others, I was in employment whilst studying. Working with people, whether they are customers, suppliers or colleagues, has given me a great insight into peoples needs, motivations, passions and drivers. I also benefited from having a family friend who acted as a coach and mentor, particularly around workplace behaviours. She also encouraged me to volunteer some time in community charities, where I learnt a lot of different skills.

What do you think are the most important traits that employers look for in graduate students (from research to coursework)?

Graduates have an advantage over experienced candidates. They are coming from a learning background. Learning is the most important aspect of starting a new job, and graduates are really equipped for this. The trick is to take that mentality and apply it to the workforce, where decisions have to be made very quickly. Graduates should ensure that employers are able to see evidence of where learning has been applied in a practical environment.

A job interview can be a daunting experience, and without knowledge and preparation, it can be very stressful, leading to a negative experience. I worked with a law graduate recently and guided her through the ‘competency interview technique’. She’d never heard of it, and her feedback afterwards was ‘I wish we had learnt this whilst at university’. It is really important that graduates understand what employers are looking for in terms of both potential and character, and how graduates can demonstrate that at interview. *This is the correct spelling of the business name.

Ron Gretton AM OAM PROJECT 2014 - Bristol Boxkite for the RAAF Museum Group Captain Ron Gretton, born in Footscray, joined the RAAF as an apprentice in 1958 and attended the RAAF School of Technical Training, RAAF Base Wagga. Having graduated as an Instrument Fitter, he then graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1964, where he was commissioned as an Aeronautical Engineer Officer in the Airforce Technical Branch.

Ron has held a number of unit engineering maintenance appointments involving experience on various RAAF aircraft types, including a two year exchange duty with the RNZAF working on C130H transport and Orion Maritime aircraft.

During his last 18 years of service Ron held a number of senior engineering staff appointments in Headquarters Support Command and Point Cook. This included a two year tour of duty as Commanding Officer, No 1 Aircraft Depot, Laverton. His last appointment was at Headquarters Logistics Command, Laverton before retiring in January 1997 after completing 39 years of service. Ron was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia 26 January 1988, in recognition of his service to the RAAF as an engineer.

Since 1980 Group Captain Gretton has been involved as a volunteer in aircraft restoration work at the RAAF Museum, Point Cook. His work includes the restoration of a 1935 Hawker Demon fighter, a 1916 Maurice Farman Shorthorn trainer and a 1942 Walrus amphibian, which was recovered from Heard Island in 1980. He was involved in restoration of a DeHavilland Mosquito. Recently, Ron was Project Manager for Project 2014, the construction of a flying replica Bristol Military Boxkite for the RAAF Museum. The original aeroplane made the first military flight in Australia at Point Cook on the 1st March 1914 and was flown by Lt Eric Harrison. The replica Boxkite flew at Point Cook during the celebration of 100 years of Military aviation on the 1st March 2014. In the 2015 Australia Day Honours list, Ron was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the community through the preservation of military aviation heritage.

Professor Christian Jakob Professor Christian Jakob is interested in models – that is, climate models – and how scientists around the world can work together better to improve them. He has worked for organisations as varied as the United States Department of Energy, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, and the Bureau of Meteorology. He is currently the Deputy Director of the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science, where he is studying the effects of tropical convection on Australia’s climate – how clouds affect weather.

Christian has studied the weather in some of the only places in Australia where rainfall rates have recently been increasing, rather than decreasing. He is also looking at the little-understood Southern Ocean, and pushing for a comprehensive temporary cloud measurement station on Macquarie Island.

“After my university education, I was a research scientist in charge of modelling clouds and tropical convection, and in that entire time I managed to go without having ever seen what tropical convection looked like. I’ve learned from that. Women’s Forum Review

“Understanding the aging process - in ourselves and in others”

The following are salient points discussed at this forum.

Notwithstanding some unanticipated trauma, every living thing will have experience with the changes of ageing. For humans, this process is individual and therefore different, depending on the experiences and attitudes developed during previous life.

It is important to realise that observations of the changes will differ between those of us actually experiencing the changes and younger people observing those changes.

There are of course, the obvious physical changes of skin texture, hair colour etc. but also the less obvious and more individual changes of attitude and activity levels.

There are those who regret that life is not as it was when they were young; then there are those who embrace new ideas, new ways and accept the inevitable social and emotional changes in their world as opportunities for learning and expanding their horizons.

Whatever the impact of ageing, the effects remain essentially individual, and will depend very much on the attitudes developed over a lifetime of experiences.

Perhaps the best advice upon which to reflect is that which applies to any situation over which one has little (if any) control - “don’t cry because it’s over (i.e. youth) rather smile because it was”.

As with most things, the maxim of “use it or lose it” is a huge factor in the extent to which the process of ageing takes over e.g. most of us will know people who give in physically and mentally to increasing age but also others who work at keeping an ageing body active and independent and their mind alert and engaged with life.

February Monthly Luncheon Remissionalising the Church - a six year case study in large organisational change Wednesday, 3rd February 2016 Every organisation tells a story. Firstly, it’s what deconstructs the behemoth, making it easier for people to connect with smaller, more digestible and relevant segments. Secondly, it helps guide the organisation as a point of reference, like a vision or mission statement. Discovering that story takes time, but with the right people it is achievable.

When Dean Phelan, the now CEO of Churches of Christ entered the organisation, he saw that it was time to tell a different story about the Church, about God and about Churches of Christ.

In a kindergarten a few years ago, some children were drawing. As usual the teacher came around to one little girl and asked her what she was drawing.

The girl replied that she was drawing God. The teacher said that nobody knows what God looks like, to which the little girl responded, “Well they will in a minute!” In the same kindergarten there was a live performance on the story of the birth of Jesus. The three wise men were played by three young boys. The first boy came out with his offering, “I bring you gold,” he said. Then, mistakenly, the third boy came forth saying “I bring you myrhh.”

The boy who was supposed to come second with Frankincense came forward, rather rattled, and sputtered “Frank said this!”

What these stories tell us is that religion and the church are things that everyone has opposing views about. There is always the question of whether God exists. Belief can be a contentious issue, and even amongst us for those who believe in God there is still great debate. This is why a new story needs to be created, explained Mr Phelan.

First months as CEO On the second day of his job Dean received a telephone call from the leader of the opposition at the time, but the exact name Mr Phelan had not yet learned. The opposition leader began by telling Mr Phelan that he had problems with the housing development on the Gold Coast. Dean added it to his list knowing that it was already time for him to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

The role of the job was to bring back the mission of the organisation, unite an otherwise siloed organisation, and rebuild confidence within the organisation. Travelling around the state of Queensland for the first six to twelve months, Mr Phelan discovered two stories that emerged from his travels. The first: the identity of Churches of Christ. At that stage Churches of Christ was made up of 70 local churches and various care properties which were all siloed, such as different aged care services that operated within their community, with different branding, almost independently from Churches of Christ. The view from the Church leaders was that a lot of the people leading the care services were not Christians and were anti-Church.

People felt that the Church was dying. Half of the congregations were dying.

Statistics support this. Over the last 40 years Christianity in Australia has dropped by 22 percent, church attendance by 48 percent and those who nominate no-religion on the survey increased by 269 percent. At the 2011 census 61 percent of people ticked the “Christian” box. Other sources show that 15 percent of Australians attend church monthly, and 8 percent are in church on any given Sunday. Another study by McCrindle in 2014 asking Australians what they consider to be the most important things needed in our community. The first was parkland with walking tracks, followed by free carpark for public transport commuters, and last on the list at 13 was a local church. “The story that the church is dying is a true story. It’s losing relevance, attendance and the like. The story that I heard was that, the church is dying, Christendom is dying and we are dying because our congregational members are going down” said Mr Phelan.

The second story that Mr Phelan heard was about the identity of Churches of Christ. As he travelled around he made a point of trying to talk to community leaders. He made his way to Cunnumalla, 12,000km from Melbourne. Churches of Christ provides the only childcare services, and also the only aged care services. These facilities are subsidised and therefore Churches of Christ makes

no profits. Mr Phelan organised to meet the Mayor and CEO of the Council and discovered that they both had their children in that childcare centre, as well as the Mayor’s mother being cared for in their aged care centre.

On the day of the meeting, he was welcomed into the boardroom and received great praise. They were pleased with what Churches of Christ had done for their community. Those centres were designated as care services because there is no local church in Cunnumalla. The care services are then seen as the Church. This is not the view in Kenmore, where Churches of Christ is headquartered. The penny then dropped for Mr Phelan. “What criteria are we using ourselves to define what goes on this register as a church, and this register as a care service? If you look at one case study in Charters Towers, Queensland there is a group of nine people who come together once a month on Sunday to have prayer, to have communion after which they go home. The same situation occurs in Maryborough

with two church services on Mondays and Wednesdays with hymns, sermons and so on but in an aged care service. This therefore begs the question: what criteria are we using to define what are churches and what does it means to be a people of God in a community?

“We went on a journey confronting the two stories, both of which are true – Churches of Christ in Queensland we can say as a true story, is dying,” said Mr Phelan. “Or the second story is Churches of Christ in Queensland has over 200 locations that are making a huge difference to people’s lives in those communities – we’re bringing uplift, we’re bringing life, meaning, purpose, and love into the community.”

At the next Churches of Christ AGM Mr Phelan discussed the prevalence of these stories. “It’s really just a matter of choice – which story do we want to live in.” Some say that there aren’t any young people enrolled in theological colleges anymore, to which Mr Phelan said that these young leaders are working in rural communities rather than in mainline churches. They are not interested in working in the first story. Working in and maximising the second story is the key then to the survival of not only Churches of Christ, but to engaging with a younger demographic.

There was then a unanimous decision to proceed with the second story – engaging with those in need, and re-evaluating the notion of the “Church.”

It was then time for action.

Data shows that in Australia we are an ageing population living with increased aged care, aged pension and health costs. As we are going forward we are getting proportionately fewer taxpayers being required to pay more and more to support an

ageing population through aged and pension costs.

We are on the front end of things considering Baby Boomers and, going forward, what it means is that it does not add up. We see a range of policies seeking to extend the retirement age and so on. This is relevant for the church because the church has traditionally at its best looked after the poor. “I would argue that certainly in our case, we look after the mid to lower socio-economic end of the spectrum in our facilities. If you’re talking about child, youth and family services we would have today certainly over 3,000 kids that we are looking after on behalf of the state that have been withdrawn from home, or are orphans and so on,” said Mr Phelan.

The strategies to address living in the second story particularly in regards to the ageing population and the increase of the poor included taking time to get all of the stakeholders involved. A large organisation, explained Mr Phelan should have one leadership team, one coherent strategy, with one purpose. Cohesion in governance is key. This is now how Churches of Christ operates as opposed to the previous state which saw three boards and three executive directors of different parts of the organisation. There was the Church, the care services, and the property side. Each of these had their own boards and executive directors.

The second strategy was a ‘Listening and Connect’ tour which was about ‘healing and unfreezing’ and rebuilding trust. Was there something that everyone could raise their hand up for to get towards this one mission? Whether an aged care service, or child care service, local church etc., could there be something that could receive a unanimous agreement? To come to a solution they took away the top 70 stakeholders in the state for a three day session. What came out of that was agreement that there would be one mission statement to bring the light of Christ into the communities.

“Those words were quite profound because the precursor to this was, when you listen, everyone wants to grow their own services,” said Mr Phelan.

However, community leaders are not expressing the same sentiments. Rather they appreciated the difference that is being made in their community through Churches of Christ. Christianity is essentially about transforming lives. At its best that’s what it does. Putting the communities in the centre was then key, and to achieve this it was necessary to create one body to forward the mission of each community – how can separate entities work together with community leaders to make a difference?

A holistic view of the church was another strategy.

The church is fundamentally about love, and integrating faith that works, ensuring that the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual elements are integrated. Too often each element is hived off, but it is important to unite. Another core strategy was setting up Strategic Action Leadership Groups in regions of people that were passionate about working with Churches of Christ to exemplify what it would look like shining the light of Christ in the communities. The first one was in Nambor.

There were three churches in Nambor, along with care services. Mr Phelan brought the leaders together, and put forward the following question: would you be interested to know what it could look like to have the more of the light of Christ shining in the Sunshine Coast? The response was a unanimous yes. The journey then began to discover

what the areas of need were in the Sunshine Coast by talking to community leaders. It soon became apparent that one of the biggest issues was male suicide. The idea then realised was to begin a ‘men’s shed.’ Although it didn’t fit into any of the other categories of aged care or child care, it was noted that the light of Christ is about helping those in the community, and that to ignore such an inclusion would be remiss.

“The Nambor one was a ripper because we had a block of land beside a retirement village that we had bought for the future, but we thought let’s put a men’s shed on that,” said Mr Phelan. Through a series of contacts Shell offered a shed that they had written off, Bunnings got involved and the shed was born. To recruit participants and rouse interest, they promoted the idea at the Nambor show and at the end of the day, the sign-up sheet indicated that more than 300 men had shown their interest in joining the men’s shed.

“As I said to our council a little later: you show me anywhere else in Australia where within the space of 12 months you’ve got that sort of response from the community to a Church initiated function.” The council asked why, to which Mr Phelan replied, “because we’re actually addressing something that is actually relevant to people’s needs.”

The shed is now a great forum where all kinds of relevant professionals liked doctors can come to talk to men about issues that are important to men.

The number of people going to the local churches has now increased because of the relevance that these kinds of initiatives are making in people’s lives. There are now 24 Strategic Action Leadership Groups operating in various communities generating similar outreach programs.

To reflect these changes, Kingdom Access Places (KAPs) is replacing terms like “Churches”, as KAPs are more representative of the broader activities initiated by the church. The data shows that KAPs are effective. Churches of Christ research shows that in 2010 the number of KAPs sat at 70, and the number of people regularly attending was 6,220.

Jump forward to 2015 and we see a 96 percent increase to 137 KAPs, and a 53 percent increase in number of people attending to 9,516.

“A kingdom of God is a place where people feel loved, where they can access basic services, they can access what they need to be who God created them to be,” said Mr Phelan.

In 2015 there was a 116 percent increase in the number of housing places, compared to 569 in 2010, a 52 percent increase in the number of independent living units from 556 in 2010 to 847 in 2015, and a 31 percent increase in the number of approved operational aged care beds from 1,355 in 2010 to 1,770 in 2015.

Creating a New Future For Mr Phelan there are three phases to creating a new future for Churches of Christ.

1.

The need for integrated faith and works – since the 1670s all of the major denominations split off all of their care and education arms and they did that for insurance and protection reasons to protect the assets of the church. These need to be brought back together. If the church is to go forward, people are still receptive but it has got to be around the areas of compassion and actually meet needs. The younger generations are necessarily interested in the traditional form of the church, but they are interested in addressing the core values such as empathy, assistance for the needy and so on. It is more important to connect with the community, connect with the people, the movement of Christianity was around people and it was around love.

2.

Successful change starts with changing the story, the meta narrative, the “way the world occurs” to people. If the story, that the church is operating in, is that of six people building to make a difference and we really want to impact this neighbourhood, watch what happens. But if the story is of six people that we’re dying and we’ve got to cling on here, watch what happens there. Who are we? What have we got before us?

Successful organisational change requires grass roots belief in, engagement with, and involvement in strategies and actions that will forward the mission in their local context. For Churches of Christ it was about getting all of the

major stakeholders to emotionally engage with the fact that they actually need to make a difference in communities, to this child, to this family, to this person, to this community, to the state of Queensland. That’s what they actually exist for. They don’t exist to grow aged care services, or to plant more churches. “I’ve asked our church leaders in the past – why do we want to plant more churches?” said Mr Phelan. “You’re met with silence because that’s heresy – well of course we want to plant more churches but to what end? What is it going to do. What does it look like to be the people of God in the communities? What would we see being different as a result of Christianity being forwarded in a contemporary relevant way?”

In his poem Hippopotamus, T.S Eliot wrote, The True Church can never fail For it is based upon a rock.

It is therefore what the church represents that sustains it. Is it ‘helping people’ that is important, or ‘sticking to tradition’? Tradition should not prohibit progression, particularly when that progression entails helping the community, those in need, spreading good will and providing assistance where needed.

The story that Churches of Christ now follows is important. It is essential. It presents a united front, a united governance framework which considers those it helps, and in turn is helping the organisation.

Professor Profiles: Allan Fenigstein as a social psychologist, the answer to the question partly is in regards to who the person is, what situations that person is in, and what people that person is interacting with. It is not purely a matter of the situation the person is in, but an interaction between the nature of the person and the nature of the situation.

“I consider myself to be a selfpsychologist,” said Professor Fenigstein.

“There are enormous double standards that operate in the way that people think, and the most powerful double standard is in the judgments that people make about the self versus anybody else.”

After walking into his first psychology class in his sophomore year, Professor Allan Fenigstein knew that psychology would share a significant part of his life.

Completing his major in psychology at The City College of New York, where notable alumni include Henry Kissinger and Abraham Maslow, he then decided to move to Texas for his graduate studies.

“I thought Texas was on the other side of the world.

I thought it was made up of tumble weed and horses, and had no idea what I would be dealing with. But it turns out that Austin, Texas is just a beautiful college town,” said Professor Fenigstein.

The self, explained Professor Fenigstein, is a very unique human phenomenon that has an enormous influence on the way in which we think about the world. The self is such a unique entity that we must understand something about the way in which the person sees the self. The way in which one thinks about the self is different from how they think about everybody else. For Fenigstein, this is a powerful element of how it is that behaviour operates. We are always operating from a self-perspective. “I can’t help but see the world through my eyes, and in turn I can’t help but see the world through my mind. And understanding something about my perception and my thinking is going to have an enormous influence and make more sense of how that person sees the world,” he said.

Upon graduating, Professor Fenigstein was committed to teaching and research in psychology.

While after his first year teaching he had an opportunity to engage in clinical psychology, but he found himself drawn more to research and teaching.

“I think of myself as a scientist, just like a biologist studies biological phenomena, a psychologist studies psychological phenomena,” he said. “The human mind is this unimaginably complex phenomenon that I just want to try to make sense of, as a means to get to really try understanding human nature.”

One area that Professor Fenigstein is particularly interested in is the specific historical event of the Holocaust. The essence of the Holocaust, he explains, was the virtual destruction of the Jewish people by the Nazis, but was not a unique phenomenon as genocide is something that can be found in many different places. Professor Fenigstein came to the study of the Holocaust not only from a personal perspective, but also because as a social psychologist the question remained: how do Nazis get to a point when they can engage in unimaginable cruelty and horrors?

Professor Fenigstein’s focus within psychology is social/personality psychology. All psychologists are fundamentally interested in answering one question: why? Why do people do what they do?

The original approach that has been taken by social/personality psychologists is that it is largely a function of inner forces that is the nature of the person that can be identified in terms of their personality: consistent, often inherent tendencies that exist within the individual. In addition to that,

The main thesis behind his research was that, under the right circumstances, ordinary people can be induced to harm innocent others because of authority pressures because of human tendencies towards obedience. This did not sit right with Professor Fenigstein.

“I could not accept that what was going on was purely a matter of external forces that were working on the individual, where they were pressured as a result of obedience demands into performing these horrible acts,” he said. He pointed out that researchers had not considered the role of hundreds of years of anti-semitism, and the public exposure to vicious propaganda many years prior to the Holocaust. To overlook this was to miss something very significant. There is great evidence that shows that at the time, in addition to the demands that people were operating under, there was an enormous amount of propaganda, the main objective of which was to force people to think of Jews or other minorities as somehow less than human.

the Polish forest, asking the question: were the same psychological processes operating in both situations? “I go through very careful analysis of the psychological processes of the Milgram situation and then I see whether those psychological processes have any applicability to the Nazi massacres. And the answer is, over and over again: absolutely not,” Fenigstein asserted.

Participants in Milgram’s research harmed others, explained Fenigstein, but the psychological processes that they were experiencing were completely the opposite of the psychological experiences that the Nazis were experiencing at the time of their atrocities. He made the following points: • Participants in Milgram study were not willing, but resistant • Historical analyses of Nazis’ experiences were the opposite – no hesitation, no evidence of tension or stress or discomfort, no indication that they felt they were doing something wrong.

• Milgram’s participants knew they were doing something wrong, Hitler’s participants didn’t think they were doing something wrong – they thought they were doing the world a favour.

The bottom line: Fenigstein seriously questions Milgram’s perspective and proposes that Milgram’s research has no relevance, and no applicability to the events that took place during the Holocaust.

Historians have assumed that Milgram’s research was relevant. It is unlikely, he explained that there wasn’t something inherent in the Nazis, considering the ways in which these individuals were socialised – the vicious propaganda they were exposed to, for example, would have certainly facilitated their willingness to take up arms when the opportunity presented itself.

Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland by Christopher Browning focuses on one killing unit operating out of Poland during the German occupation. A group of everyday men (ordinary men who had previously been policemen, businessmen, etc., of whom only a handful was from the Nazi Party or Schutzstaffel SS) were ordered by Nazi authorities to either participate in the murder or transport of Jews to the Treblinka gas chambers. Browning essentially suggested that this was essentially an example of Milgram’s experiment.

The technology isn’t new per se as it is a kind of materials analysis known as near-infrared spectroscopy. This is when a light is shone onto an object and the molecules of that object vibrate causing light to bounce back randomly. That light is sent through the spectrometer, and is separated according to the different wavelengths.

What kinds of techniques do you employ when in a job interview? From the clothes we wear, to how easy our names are to pronounce, there are many factors for success that are considered when being interviewed. But science says that our voice is something that we really need to pay attention to.

New research has found that a person’s intellect, amiability and thoughtfulness is conveyed and perceived through their voice, rather than through text.

The study entitled, The Sound of Intellect: Speech Reveals a Thoughtful Mind, Increasing a Job Candidate’s Appeal,

by Juliana Schroeder and Nicholas Epley, conducted experiments where a group of MBS students composed both verbal and written elevator pitches1 to hypothetical employers.

The results were unanimous across the experiments: from video to transcripts – evaluators – who included practicing recruiters – who listened to job pitches were consistently more interested in hiring the candidates than were evaluators who read identical transcriptions (reading out loud tends to have less variance in pitch). Voice impressed evaluators so much so, that a more positive impression of candidates was formed, and these candidates were rated as more likeable. It was believed that candidates had more intellect, were more competent, thoughtful, and intelligent when their pitches were heard.

“Adding a human voice—whether male or female—to written pitches made job candidates seem to have greater intellect, and increased reported interest in hiring the candidates,” reported the authors.

Why were the results so? Well, it was identified that pitch variance suggested that participants had more active and lively mind. A varied pitch can show that someone is enthusiastic, interested and actively deliberates, whereas a monotone voice suggests a less actively engaged mind. For example, when it comes to brands projecting sincerity, one study showed that when it comes to brand messaging, changing tone resonates with perceptions of brand sincerity.

Another interesting hint: an array of vocal styles could be employed to portray various traits including attractiveness, confidence, dominance, and intelligence, according to one study. For men, it was found that to best sound attractive a slow and low pitch could be adopted.

This was also the case for women, but with the addition of a more hoarse voice. Men could be perceived as intelligent and confident by a loud raised tone, and women could speak louder and faster, although in the study, the male voice scored higher.

Research has even discovered that power-posing can you help you interview better, too. A 2012 study showed that job seekers who initiate power poses prior to an interview, come out more successful in the end. The research found that high-power posers better maintained their composure, projected more confidence, and presented more captivating and enthusiastic speeches, which were rated higher by their evaluators, compared to those who prepared with contractive poses. The lesson here is the mind and body work in greater harmony than we may have ever thought: we exude what we manifest.

So when in an interview speak up, speak loud, and prepare mentally to ensure a more successful communicative style. As noted, “when conveying one’s intellect, it is important for one’s voice, quite literally, to be heard.”

The West Coast Wilderness Railway A TRAVEL REVIEW

The very scenic railway between Queenstown and Strahan is one I have travelled on from time to time, but my first tour was in the old Daimler Rail Car with the Mines Inspector at the end of WW2. Later, I delighted in the steam locomotives and the way they used the ABT cogs.

So in 1963 the closure of such a wonderful line was a savage disappointment. It was therefore almost a miracle when the line was reopened after a complete rebuilding around 2004, but the services offered then as found on several trips, seemed blatantly focused on food and tourism, and the railway seemed poorly maintained, as far as I, a nonengineer, but railway enthusiast could determine.

So the ride from Queenstown to Strahan yesterday was a most unexpected and wonderful surprise. It is now operated as a well-run and genuine railway, again by an enthusiastic team of 40 Government employees, who are clearly delighted in their

jobs. The tracks and carriages have been brilliantly restored and improved with padded seats and glass windows and featured great wooden wall panels. Our Wilderness Carriage was air conditioned as well, a new feature in an historical train, but a really appreciated improvement. A steam engine worked the train each way, itself a real delight.

The scenery is still as grand and challenging as it has been since the line was opened no doubt.

I wondered how the catering would be, but even this was far superior to that offered by the previous operator, a major hospitality company! Drinks and morning tea are offered as part of the ticket as was the grand three course buffet dinner in the delightful Queenstown Station dining room. A short street walking tour was offered to show off Queenstown but I did not take up this free offer. The lunch is included in the Wilderness Carriage ticket price.

In summary, the Wilderness Carriage is strongly recommended despite it being more expensive, but that was good value given the high standard of catering in vintage style carriages, and the lunch far exceeded my expectations. The delightful staff and humorous and very appropriate commentary was a top feature of this day out.

I can recommend this tour to anyone prepared to spend a day in great scenery and who might be appreciative of grand engineering and the history of this line. Short, but interesting stops provide lavatories and interesting highlights

featuring the activities which once featured along the line. I certainly suggest the extra expense of the Wilderness carriage, with the observation platform, is very well worth the extra costs, and given the quality of the lunch, this extra is hardly more than the costs of a good meal anyway!

This restored West Coast Wilderness train and the Wilderness carriage has my top recommendation. It is a great day out, with scenery only viewed from this train.

Olive was celebrating the Centenary of the Carlton Baths which was on Thursday, 11th February.

“Being in the water supports you to do things that you can’t do on land,” says Olive.

“It removes strain from the knees - water bears your weight, so it’s kind on the joints.”

Olive says that being in a pool is refreshing, relaxing and calming.

Andrea Lee’s Australian Citizenship Ceremony

Resident Andrea Lee, who studied at Melbourne Law School, was recently awarded her Australian Citizenship.

“I feel happy, and relieved that I am finally an Australian citizen. It was a difficult journey to get permanent residency, and to be a citizen now is the culmination of that time period in my life,” said Andrea.

She had spent three years in Perth and one year in Melbourne, but feels that there is still a lot of Australia to explore.

“The thing I love about Australia is the openness of the people and the whole notion of giving new things a go.”

“Melbourne is a great city, a multicultural city that embraces diversity. Perth was also lovely, I had a great group of friends to enjoy a lazy afternoon of knitting and coffee,” she said.

Andrea undertook the Master of Construction Law program at the Melbourne Law School. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science and a Masters in Civil Engineering. She spent the past nine years working in Australia and New Zealand prior to enrolling in the law program.

“It was a challenge to come from an engineering background to study law,” she said.

“It was also five years since I was last at uni and I was worried about the workload.”

“I learned a lot about how the law and construction practice intersect, and I am pleased with the courses and lecturers that I had while at MLS. The librarians and the learning skills advisers were great, too!”

“I loved my time at Grad House, meeting new people from all over the world and making great friends whom I hope to remain in touch with.”

such as a green garden, or any of Mother Nature’s offering, a grey wall somehow does not measure up.

We spoke to some of the Residents facing the wall to see what their thoughts on renovating the wall were.

My main objection to the wall that my window faces is actually the light. I don’t feel that there’s enough light coming to my room from the window.

I think that it will be much better and definitely more cheerful if something is to be done with it.

I hope you can do something to bring more light in, if it is indeed possible. It will certainly make my day too if in the morning when I roll over my blinds and open my window, I see a beautiful mural or a vertical garden filled with various fragrant flowers, accompanied with birds chirping and a hot caramel tea in my hands.

I find it very calming, as after a long day amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, returning to a room and view with neutral colours is relaxing. I do appreciate murals in all other locations, I take plenty of photos especially in Fitzroy/ Brunswick which are full of these gems! However, in Graduate House, my home, I prefer the “quietness” of the wall, without any murals or designs.

Liliana Bray, Doctor of Medicine Graduate In 2015 after four years of undergraduate study (Bachelor of Medical Science and honours at the University of Wollongong), then four years of post graduate study at the University of Melbourne I have graduated from the Doctor of Medicine degree.

I really enjoyed this course, and I feel very excited about the future. I will be working as an intern in 2016 at Ballarat Base Hospital. In the future I hope to apply for surgical training.

Another graduation I had

earlier this year, but also important to me, was in my sport kendo. I moved up a rank from first kyu to shodan (first dan). This is a big step, moving from the lower grades (kyu) into the upper grades (dan).

During this time I had been living at Graduate House, which was very supportive and helpful for me. I have met many good friends and had a great year there. I'm very thankful to everyone and hope we can meet again in the future.

Yu Sheng, The Chinese New Year Prosperity Toss Yu Sheng is a salad prepared and eaten during Chinese New Year, up to the 15th day of the first lunar month, typically the day of the Lantern Festival and Chinese Valentine’s Day.

We then say “enjoy a ten thousand fold profit from your investment,” and “may you have many sources of wealth.”

A Teochew style cold salad is prepared with shredded vegetables, sauce and raw fish. Literally, yu sheng means raw fish in Mandarin, however, it also sounds a lot like increased abundance.

Fittingly, when the salad is prepared, the ingredients are tossed high into the air, while those around the table loudly exclaim “prosper” and other auspicious wishes. This is why Yu Sheng is also called the prosperity toss.

“Good luck is approaching,” is said when the shredded coconut is added. When the shredded green radish is added, “may you be forever young,” is uttered, denoting eternal youth. When shredded white radish is added, “may you rise steadily in your career,” is uttered.

The raw fish is then added, and we say “abundance throughout the year.” Next pomelo or lime is added to the raw fish to represent luck and progression. We utter “abundance throughout the year.” A sprinkling of pepper and cinnamon powder represents an attainment of wealth, fittingly we say, “may you attract wealth and treasures.” The oil and plum sauce is poured over

2016 Members’ Survey

On the 29th February, 2016 we are releasing the second Graduate Union survey.

As Members may recall, the first survey, undertaken in 2013, demonstrated that The Graduate Union has an active and engaged membership. Dr Bennett, CEO and Head of College, explained that it would have been easy for Members to simply tick a box, or rate something out of 10. However, the vast majority of respondents wrote detailed answers to many of the questions. They took a great deal of time to complete the survey and to relay wellthought through ideas in an articulate and careful manner.

“We found the results not only to be valid and reliable, but also with constructive, deliberated suggestions and directions that we could act upon.

The intelligence and kindness, for which our membership is renowned, was most evident, as was the commitment to supporting our purposes for education and social good” said Dr Bennett.

Not surprisingly, the 2013 survey found a large percentage of its membership to be aged over 60 years. In part, this result pointed again to the ever present need to recruit and retain younger members, particularly those in the career life stage.

We have thus worked to increase our engagement with new graduates and with professionals in cities around the world, particularly those in Melbourne.

From another perspective, the findings of a predominantly older membership indicate that we have long-standing, committed Members who have contributed to this organisation over many years.

“I regard it as collective wisdom that is to be respected, tapped into and learnt from. It is very important to remain relevant and useful to these loyal Members and, more generally, to an age group that is increasing in numbers across Australia. Our role - indeed, our responsibility - is to acquire and apply a multi-disciplinary multicultural treasury of knowledge, skills and influence.”

“Equally, it is important to ‘diversify’ and to refrain from focusing solely on any one cohort’s perceived needs or goals. We thus aim to convene programs and activities that are age, discipline, lifestyle and culturally relevant to different segments of our membership.”

The initial survey also found that Resident Members did not continue membership once they had left Graduate House. Engaging current residents and developing outreach programs for previous residents were thus seen as important strategies to create a stronger culture of unity.

In house, we now have many platforms for residents to engage, to have a voice and to become involved. A Graduate House Student Group (GHSG) has been formed and Resident Member representation on the sub-committees of Council has been increased.

The establishment of a multi-pronged feedback system has increased responsivity and contributed to an improved resident experience.

Establishing the alumni group (Graduate Union College Alumni - GUCA) and enhancing the Union’s digital presence were also key strategic moves to ensure that The Graduate Union remains relevant in the digital age and ‘in-touch’.

“Our other outreach is internationally through the introduction of programs such as that in support of the United Nations 2030 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which I encourage everyone to get involved with.”

“With this upcoming survey we hope that Members and potential members will feel again that the solutions they put forward will be acted upon. We look forward also to feedback on a range of initiatives currently under consideration for inclusion in our Master Plan for release by the end of this year.”

50 year reunion, 1966 Teacher Melbourne Teachers College Words, Paul Bianco and Peter Power Mebourne Teachers College 1966 reunited at Graduate House.

What a buzz there was in the room at Graduate House on Friday 12th February! And no wonder as ninety-seven colleagues from Melbourne Teachers College 1966 came together to celebrate a 50 year reunion. A number of 1965 and 1967 inductees joined in the fun and reminiscing, highlighted by a nostalgic walk down memory lane curtesy of a slide show of images and snippets of songs from our two or three years at college.

The day commenced with morning tea at the 1888 building on the corner of Grattan and Swanston, the hostel to many of the ladies who started their careers there so long ago. Although some had kept in contact over the years, many were seeing each other for the first time in 50 years. The excitement in the air was high. A tour of the old college and hostel brought back so many wonderful memories.

Graduate House proved to be the perfect venue for our luncheon. Not only were we well catered for with seating and with a wonderful audiovisual set up, the excellent ambience and food was noted by many.

Thanks you to Chris Harvey, Senior Development Manager at Melbourne University for his outstanding work with the website for registrations and for name tags and to Rosie Ellul at Graduate House for being so accommodating.

The 2016 fifty year reunion for 1966 Melbourne Teachers College was a huge hit, a day that will stay with us for ever.

Happy Birthday Wazila!

Loyalty card member Wazila Khan, second from right was seen celebrating her birthday on the 5th February 2016. We hope you had a wonderful birthday, Wazila!

A recent discovery

A half-penny from 1890 was found in the terrace of 224 Leicester Street.

The bronze coin, issued by HM Queen Victoria, England, Great Britain was discovered during refurbishments to apartment 40 or 41.

The coin is just one of the many artefacts and items of curiosity and interest that are found around our college everyday.

On the Reverse side of the coin we see Britannia seated facing right on a rock wearing a helmet and breastplate with a flowing dress. She holds a trident and rests her right hand on a shield which bears the combined crosses of the Union Flag. On the right is a ship sailing away, on the left, a lighthouse.

On the obverse side we see the bust of Queen Victoria facing left wearing a bodice and a pearl necklace. in her hair, we see a mantle decorated with rose, thistle and shamrock and a wreath of leaves and berries tied at the back with a ribbon, her hair drawn to a plaited bun behind. The engraving on the outside of the coin reads VICTORIA D: G: (Dei Gratia – by the Grace of God).
