Ms Kelly Gellatly

University Art Museums: A unique position, a great contribution.

Kelly Gellatly is the Director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art at The University of Melbourne.

Prior to taking up the role in April 2013 she was Curator of Contemporary Art (Australian and International) at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), where she was responsible for building the Gallery’s collection of contemporary painting, sculpture, installation, video and (Australian) decorative arts. She also curated numerous exhibitions, including the NGV’s major surveys of the work of Rosalie Gascoigne (2008) and Gordon Bennett (2007). Her last exhibition at the NGV was RALLY: Contemporary Indonesian Art - Jompet Kuswidananto and Eko Nugroho (2013).

Kelly has previously held curatorial positions at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. She also publishes widely on Australian and international art including, most recently, the book, 101 Contemporary Australian Artists, which showcases the media, that has been acquired for the NGV collection through the Victorian Foundation for Living Australian Artists.

The Ian Potter Art Museum at the University of Melbourne celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012. With a collection ranging from antiquities to contemporary art and now numbering over 16,000 objects, the Ian Potter Art Museum has developed a program, unique to Australia, of innovative object-based learning that enables students across disciplines to engage with and learn from art. It also connects with audiences beyond the University, who have increasingly high expectations about what a 21st century visitor experience entails. In this presentation, Kelly will look at how the University art museum meets these different but complementary briefs, and signal new directions for the future.

The Women’s Forum Some salient points from the What’s in a Name? forum on the 19th February included: • “Name” is a basic phenomenon in life as we know it. A “name” gives everything (person, animal or item) a presence, a recognised reality.

As something new appears, be it human, flora, fauna or scientific concept, it will be given a name by which it can be identified.

• Mention of a particular name can evoke a multitude of images, emotions, associations depending on the background experiences of the person who, when hearing the name e.g., God, peace, conflict, hunger, etc.

• At a personal level, the name of a newborn child is usually chosen by the parents who may be influenced by current fashions, a desire to commemorate a special person or event, or even on occasion, a desire to endow that child with the qualities/personality of someone or some place they admire e.g., Winston, Cornwall, Madonna or Elvis. Shortening a name or using a nickname may diminish or highlight the status of a person.

• In times past, names were often associated with a particular trade or skill (e.g., Smith or Baker) and male children carried the father’s name followed by “son”.

• Addressing someone by name usually implies empathy or respect and in other situations, the name may become an adjective applied to behaviour (e.g. Machiavellian, angelic).

• It is not unusual to attribute to people, the perceived characteristics of the area in which they live (with admiration, envy, derision or respect) e.g., Broadmeadows, Toorak, Bayside, Western Suburbs, etc. or again, the perceived (not always accurate) characteristics of particular cultural groups e.g., French, Irish, Aussie, etc.

• Personal achievements in a lifetime are often noted by naming institutions to commemorate those achievements in perpetuity e.g., Monash, or a wealthy benefactor will give his or her name in order to be identified with the gift.

• In the commercial world the names given to goods, services, commodities etcetera may influence purchasing power or behaviour.

This is especially evident in brand names for clothing, cosmetics, food, toys, teams etc.

• So...What’s in a name? More often than not, in the case of the namer it may be to impress, manipulate, revere or any number of personal reasons. In the case of the named, the way in which that name is carried may well have to do with personal confidence, social status, expectations or the context in which it is used.

Finance Seminar Review Don’t put your head in the sand...it can be costly!

Thursday, 7th March, 2014 Peter Clark shared his invaluable expertise on the following four topics - wills, bequests, superannuation planning and aged care planning: Wills - It is important to make a will at any age and to make known your nominated executors. You need to know the level of protection that Testamentary Trusts will provide from third parties, the best way of writing your letter of wishes and a working understanding of Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Consequences to consider include holiday homes, assets to be excluded and whether jointly owned property needs to be included. You also need to know if your superannuation is subject to a binding death nomination, taking into account blended families and cash reserves.

Bequests - Peter advised giving some consideration to making tax deductible donations during your lifetime, and cautioned against leaving assets that are subject to CGT and establishing a trust within the will.

Superannuation Planning - The host of concepts to understand for this topic was large: tax benefits of drawing a pension, binding death nominations and whether these are reversible, understanding taxable versus non-taxable components, strategising, cashing out and re-contributing, or cashing out just before death. He suggested also to consider consolidating superannuation, keeping an account watch for loss of insurance and considering the Centrelink position of pensions. For blended families, he suggested care with the decision of going for self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) or having separate funds and changes in contribution limits.

Aged Care - Peter cautioned that this is a complex area, where compliance to CGT rules is essential. He suggested that there was a lot of planning required. This may be subjected to assets and income tests, bearing in mind that rules do change from time to time. It is best to get organised even if it seems difficult and not to leave a CGT “bomb” for your beneficiaries. Deborah Cheetham, Yorta Yorta woman, soprano, composer and author has established her place as an artist in great demand.

Since her international debut in 1997, Deborah has performed in theatres and concert halls of the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and throughout Australia. In April 2007, Deborah was awarded a two-year Fellowship from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board of the Australia Council for the Arts and this has allowed her to create Australia’s first Indigenous opera, Pecan Summer. In 2010, Deborah brought together Australia’s first classically trained Indigenous ensemble to present the world premiere of Pecan Summer. In the same year she was a finalist for Australian of the Year in Victoria.

In September 2011, Deborah was appointed as Associate Dean of Indigenous Studies and Head of the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts at the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM), The University of Melbourne.

Toni has worked as an accompanist in Melbourne for the past 20 years, performing with professional singers and instrumentalists.

After completing undergraduate studies in Western Australia, Toni studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. On her return to Australia she completed her postgraduate studies at the VCA, where she has worked with both secondary and tertiary education students since 1994.

Toni has made recordings for the ABC and 3MBS, and regularly performs in recital with Soprano Deborah Cheetham. Recent performances have included recitals in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and New York.

In 2011, Toni accepted the position of Company Manager for Short Black Opera Company and continues with her role as company vocal coach. In 2012, she completed the Indigenous Arts Management Course run by the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts at the VCA and MCM, The University of Melbourne.

Jeffrey Rosenfeld, President, of The Graduate Union has always had a strong affinity for music, starting on the recorder at the age of seven, progressing to the clarinet and saxophone in primary school and then to all the other woodwind instruments and French Horn in secondary school. Mr Bruce Worland AM, Music Master at Melbourne High School was a formative influence.

Jeffrey studied clarinet with Phillip Miechel, the former Principal Clarinet in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and Baroque oboe with James Caldwell at the Baroque Performance Institute, Oberlin College, Ohio, USA. His main instruments currently are the clarinet and saxophone. A regular attendee at National Music Camps and a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra on clarinet in 1977, Jeffrey has played in many orchestras and ensembles including the Victorian Opera Company Orchestra. He is currently Principal Clarinet in both the Corpus Medicorum and the Australian Doctors Orchestra.

featuring also our President, ProfessorJeffrey Rosenfeld on clarinet performing ‘The Shepherd on the Rock (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen) by Franz Schubert, and Fantasy Pieces Op. 73 (FantasiestĂźcke) by Robert Schumann.

The Shepherd on the Rock is a famous opera-like song for soprano, clarinet and piano composed

by Franz Schubert in 1828, and published a year and a half after his death. It was written for his friend, operatic soprano Pauline Anna MilderHauptmann, who had requested a showpiece that would allow her to express a wide range of feelings. She first performed the lied at the House of the Blackheads in Riga on the 10th February, 1830. The song words are from two poems of Wilhelm Muller and include two verses from Karl August Varnhagen von Ense.

GU Flu Vaccination Day was a great success!

‘Be fluSmart – the flu vaccine is your best defence!’

The Third Annual GU Influenza Vaccination Day (also World Kidney Day) was held at Graduate House on the 13th March 2014, and was a great success. Almost 300 vaccinations were provided free of charge to Resident and non-resident Members, as well as to many staff and students from The University of Melbourne.

The day is now an annual event for The Graduate Union in collaboration with the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) to launch their Annual Flu Awareness campaign. The flu shots were provided by BUPA and given by two of their Wellness Nurses who worked tirelessly throughout the day and to whom we extend our gratitude.

The event received considerable media coverage, with Channel 7 reporting it in the evening news and several articles being published in newspapers and on the internet.

Representatives were also available to give advice from The Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Australia, Kidney Health Australia, Darebin City Council, The Asthma Foundation and Wedderburn. The Graduate Union is grateful for the information below provided by each of these groups, and hopes that this will contribute to the fostering of wellness and the prevention of ill-health for our membership.

Bupa Wellness Being a healthy weight has important benefits, not only on how you feel but also to help reduce the risk of long-term conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The best way to maintain a healthy weight is to balance your energy in with your energy out. This simply means an overweight person should decrease the amount of energy (food) by eating fewer kilojoules and increase the energy by doing more physical activity.

Diabetes Australia Victoria.

In Australia, 275 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day.

There are two main types of diabetes - Type 1 (10%) and Type 2 (85-90%). Neither can be cured but Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented. There are many lifestyles factors that contribute to the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes such as being physically inactive or overweight. Type 2 diabetes often runs in families so if you have a family history of diabetes, you may also be at increased risk.

Kidney Health Australia Without realising it, a person can lose up to 90% of their kidney function which by then, could be too late. Adult Australians are at increased risk of chronic kidney disease if they have diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension) and an obesity body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30. The risk is higher if they have a history of kidney disease, are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin and above sixty years of age; and elevated further for those who smoke and who have established heart problems, like heart failure or a past heart attack, and/or have had a stroke.

Over 1.5 million Australians may be affected by early-stage kidney disease but be unaware that they should be at the doctors.

Stroke Foundation Victoria A transcient ischaemic attack (TIA) is when the brain’s blood supply is interrupted for a short period of time. It is often called a “mini-stroke” because, though it lasts only for a short time, the signs are the same as those of a stroke. A TIA is often a warning sign that a stroke may occur. It should never be ignored and requires emergency treatment. Up to one in five people who have a TIA will have a stroke within the next three months.

Asthma Foundation Victoria If you suspect you might have asthma, you should see your doctor for a professional diagnosis. The good news is that most people can control their asthma with medications and lead a normal life.

Once your asthma is well controlled you should experience only occasional symptoms, and asthma attacks (or flare-ups) should be rare. If asthma is left untreated the long term inflammation of the airway can cause permanent damage to the airway. This can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) so it’s important to see your doctor if you have any concerns.

University of Melbourne at the 2014 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show Hosted by the Melbourne School of Land and Environment, the University of Melbourne is partnering with City of Melbourne, Nursery and Garden Industry Association of Victoria (NGIV) and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show to exhibit a pop-up garden display that will showcase the unique talents of the Melbourne School of Land and Environment’s urban horticulture teachings and research at the Burnley campus.

Having been in City Square in March, the 9x11 metre exhibit will be at the 2014 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show at Carlton Gardens from the 26th to the 30th of March. This show attracts more than 110,000 international, national and local visitors over the five-days.

The Graduate Union extends its thanks to Members and non-member alumni hosts who have signed up. The program pairs postgraduate students from developing countries (e.g., in Africa, Indonesia, the Pacific and South East Asia), who have received the Australia Award, with a local alumnus. We are very grateful that Melbourne citizens, and particularly our Members, understand the importance of providing a local connection for support, advice and a friendly face. We look forward to you bringing the student with whom you are paired in to Graduate House to meet other graduates from all over the world over breakfast and dinner.

2014 Jack Shrader Memorial Scholarship Award The annual Jack Shrader Memorial Scholarship Award is to recognise outstanding employees in the ACUC (Association of Colleges and University Club) global network and to fund their professional development. Given the large number of applicants and an international competition, we are thus proud to announce that one of the four recipients of the 2014 Award was our Systems Development Manager, Alex Skaria (pictured). The prize money is being used for Alex to attend a web-development course and he is using the learning gained to redevelop The Graduate Union website.

Congratulations Alex! about the ACUC Network Since 1978, the ACUC has been serving the needs of organisations like The Graduate Union around the world. The association exists to provide the reciprocity between member clubs, and to serve as a resource centre for professionals who work in this university-associated industry. The ACUC is integral to The Graduate Union’s participation in a system that provides opportunities for faculty, alumni and staff to welcome members from around the world into their residential colleges and home clubs.

March Monthly Luncheon Review Our 5th March, Monthly Luncheon speaker was Professor Ross Garnaut whose presentation was entitled ‘How are we managing the dog days?

Popularly believed to be a time of evil by the Ancient Romans and Greeks, ‘dog days’, as explained by Professor Garnaut, refer to the very hot sultry Northern Hemisphere summer days which correspond to the appearance of the star Sirius, the largest and brightest of the Canis Major constellation. In contrast, the term ‘salad days’, used by Shakespeare in Anthony and Cleopatra, has various interpretations that range from naïve, carefree and inexperienced to a period of material affluence.

For Garnaut, they are used to reference Australia’s recent boom.

According to Professor Garnaut, Australia is heading from two decades of ‘salad days’, with economic growth that outlasted the Asian Financial Crisis (1997), the dotcom bubble (1997-2000) and the global financial crisis (2007-2008), to ‘dog days’ of major economic challenges for all in Australia.

Characterising the boom have been significant increases in Chinese-fuelled mining investments (A$102 billion in 2011-2012) and exports, which saw rises in the terms of trade of an unprecedented 75% from 1989/99 to 2008/09, and of employment levels, particularly for the professions and in retail. According to Ross, this prosperity was facilitated by the Reform Era of 1983 to 2001 which led to the release from government control of prices for the Australian currency, imports relative to local goods, labour and capital on the financial markets.

With Chinese growth and investment in mining plateauing, it is clear that Australia cannot continue to rely on rising resources revenue. Professor Garnaut thus proposes a blueprint for the nation after the boom, and expresses the hope that Australia is clever enough – and our leaders courageous enough – to change what needs to be changed and preserve a fair and prosperous Australia.

A central tenet of this blueprint is an Australian-US dollar exchange rate of <70 cents to restore export competitiveness with regions such as the US, Japan and Europe which have recently implemented extraordinary, never before seen monetary policies. Other tenets are that this rate depreciation needs to be matched by productivity increases, wage restraint and cuts to government spending. In his view, cuts to middle-class welfare and the closing of tax breaks are essential, and these could be offset by building productivity-enhancing economically-merited infrastructure.

The call by Professor Garnaut for return to a Reform Era is clear. Competition policy needs to be reformed to counter monopolies and oligopolies that are poorly regulated, protected from competition and extortionate. Tax reform, environmental reform, social welfare reform and industrial reform are also proposed in his blueprint.

Above all, Ross proposes that the responsibility for steering clear of an otherwise inevitable recession in Australia is one that should be shared equally by individuals and organisations. It requires a deliberate and consistent cultural change towards restraint and fiscal responsibilty by all. Orientation Week The South Lawn on 27th February 2014

Our dymanite Graduate Union team of Priya Rajoo, Billy Mihelakis, Eliah Castiello and Zac Matthews were kept busy at The South Lawn on Clubs and Societies Day during O-Week. The crowd was a mixture of under-graduate and postgraduate students, with many enquiring about accommodation, our collegial activities and our reciprocal arrangements with overseas colleges and associations. The discounted meals and drinks that came with membership were also of interest, as was the knowledge that there was an undergraduate-free haven. Postgraduate students were pleased to hear about the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Forum, and of the potential to meet with the Deans of Faculties over our College Table lunches.

On the 28th February, the team promoted membership in the basement of the Business and Economics building called The Spot, again with MSGR. With the crowd arriving in waves, it was busier at the start of the day as students came in before other commitments to grab information.

These students were newly enrolled higher degrees in research, such as research masters and doctorates, and were very interested in becoming members of a graduate-only association.

The 60 minute long performance includes traditional Native American dancing and flute playing of songs from his CD. Red Horse will also speak to his heritage and culture, and narrate Native American stories.

After the performance, Red Horse will mingle, take photos and talk with the audience over afternoon tea. Native American merchandise will also be available for purchase. This includes Red Horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smudgings and his stunning hand made jewellery of bone, Czech glass beads and leather.

Rotary International is a network of 34,000 clubs with 1.2 million Rotarians - neighbours, community leaders and global citizens uniting for common good. Each year, the Foundation of Rotary International offers fully-paid Rotary Peace Fellowships to study at its Peace Centers located in Sweden, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and Thailand. Fifty people each year receive awards to undertake a 15-24 month master’s degree; and fifty, who have had extensive experience in peace-related fields, are awarded 2-3 months of professional development in peace and conflict.

To receive one of these prestigious Peace Fellowships, you must be endorsed by a Rotary Club. We are thus very honoured to have received an invitation from Rotary International District 9800 for Graduate Union Resident and non-resident Members to submit applications for potential endorsement. As is well known, Pi is used to denote the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. With its approximation beginning in Babylonian times (pre-539 BC) and much earlier by the Chinese, Archimedes correctly identified the number to three decimal places and the 17th century German-Dutch mathematician, Ludolph van Ceulen, to thirty-five: 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288 (yes it is 35). It is now calculated to 12 trillion decimal places (so please excuse us for not publishing this here in full) and since its use by the 18th century Welsh mathematician William Symbolised, numbered and circular, Jones, has been known by the 16th letter of the ancient Greek this pie is a work of art.

No-longer in print

In March 2012, Encyclopedia Britannica announced that the last print had been the 2010 leather-bound 32-volume edition weighing nearly 60 kilograms. The company was one of only a handful that, as explained by its President Jorge Cauz, “made the transition from traditional media to the digital sphere while managing to be profitable and to grow”.

Cauz also acknowledged that those who felt great nostalgia in saying “good-bye to a dear, reliable and trustworthy friend that brought them the joy of discovery in the quest for knowledge” over the last 244 years had been understanding.

In closing print versions, other publishers note that reference information is now sourced largely from digital devices. Hence, the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, 25 years in the making by 80 lexicographers, is unlikely to be printed, according to Nigel Portwood, CEO of Oxford University Press. As of April this year, the Office of Coast Survey in America will no longer print the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NAOO) lithograph nautical charts printed since the late 1800s; and notwithstanding world atlas printing since 150 AD (Claudius Ptolemy), the majority of today’s atlases are in searchable and digitised formats.

In 2011, a spokesperson for Sensis, which publishes theYellow and White Pages directories, said that “Millions of Australian still rely on the print directories each week and in the future we expect that print will continue to complement these digital platforms”. Notwithstanding Telstra’s recent sale of 70% of Sensis, this position should remain, as the telecommunications company has legal obligations to provide an alphabetical public number directory under its carrier licence. In the not so distant future however, the delivery of the familiar thick White Pages to our doorsteps may also become a memory.

These are beautiful photgraphs of a bird (to the right) and a frog (below) and, at first glance, though visually stunning, perhaps not newsworthy. Look at little closer and you will see that the bird is a woman and that the frog is five people.

These incredible creations are by 35-year old Johannes Stötter who hails from the South Tyrol region of Italy and is also a musician (Celtic-folk) and world-champion bodypainter.

Using special breathable paint, Johannes spends weeks planning each shoot, hours painting his models in fine detail and many more hours working with the photographer to get the perfect shot. The patience by the models, each of whom can be posing for hours in a position that is not usual for most, is extraordinary. The bird woman, for example, is poised on a real tree trunk and the front model for the frog is kneeling and bending backwards for a considerable period of time.

A load of grammatically correct rubbish

Academics live increasingly by the ‘publish or perish’ mantra.

Without international peer-reviewed articles they are not read and referenced by other academics and without these citations they are less ‘competitive’ when seeking university employment or promotion. As noted by Peter Higgs (of bosun fame) when receiving his 2013 Nobel Prize, he would A screen shot of the SCIgen site. not be employed as an academic today as he has not been sufficiently ‘productive’.

In 2005, students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology came up with a solution which enables all to publish passable gibberish. The site is called SCIgen - An Automatic CS Paper Generator and is at http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen. Our editorial team members are now the authors of a perfectly nonsensical article entitled ‘On the development of model checking’ complete with abstract, table of contents, introduction, results, graphs of our findings, conclusions and a full reference list.

We will not be submitting this empirical piece for review and publication. However, 120 others who have used this program and had their articles published by Springer and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) have now had their articles removed thanks to the work of French computer scientist, Cyril Labbé, who has experience on many sides of this game. In 2010 he used SCIgen to generate over 100 papers by non-existent author Ike Antkare and add these to the Google Scholar database. In that year, Ike became more highly cited than Einstein and the most highly cited ‘computer scientist’ - each of his articles referencing his own works and thus boosting his citation rate. Two years later, on the good-cop side, Labbé wrote a detection program, described in a 2012 Scientometrics paper (Labbé, C. and Labbé, D. Scientometrics 94, 379–396, 2013), which enabled him to find the SCIgen articles published in peer-reviewed proceedings for conferences on computer science and engineering. In response to these findings Springer has said that it will work with Labbé to go through over 10,000 journals and books to find possible SCIgen articles not during Labbé’s initial research.

In the meantime, hard-working and genuine scientists continue the rushing out of as many papers as possible in what Labbé describes the “spamming war started at the heart of science”.

Thank you for your feedback College and Accommodation The best ever student (postgraduate) accommodation that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever lived in. It has everything that you need: seven breakfasts and five dinners weekly, friends from the universities all over the world, and visiting scholars and professors from time to time. There are Meet and Greet dinner events held monthly, room cleaning weekly (very clean) and regular seminars on a diverse range of topics.

Are you a first timer in Australia without knowing anyone? No worries, within one week you will know everyone if you attend the meals every day and mingle with people. They all speak English (with various lovely accents), and you will feel more than welcome and a sense of belonging. I say this from my own experience of more than three years living at Graduate House! I would love to stay longer, but I have finished my study and am not a student any more. I am going away from Australia to another country for good in two weeks, but I will definitely come back to visit Graduate House in the future.

On top of that, I want to say thank you all - the lovely and friendly working staff from the CEO, Dr Kerry Bennett to Mr Daniel Clark and other office staff, the kitchen and the maintenance staff, the Duty Residents, Mattias and Tim, as well as all my friends at Graduate House!

Seen at Graduate House On the 14th February, a group of old friends, most of whom graduated together from The University of Melbourne in the 1950s met for lunch at Graduate House. The group, mostly from the Faculty of Architecture, have been meeting up regularly since a visit a few years ago by a friend from England who had wanted to meet up again with his old alumni. Since then they have been lunching every year or so and according to who has been in Melbourne and available at the time. After their initial degrees, many from the group went on to do other things such as acting, social work, landscape architecture, music and teaching. Most are now retired. The luncheon was organised by Life Member David Eyres, seated second from right, who joined the Association of Graduates in 1958.

Also pictured (but not in correct order) are Robin Cuming, Nick Rickard, Lou and Geoff Quail, Hugh O’Neil, Margaret Lester, Henry and Ivy Retallick, Rhyll and Al Nance, Pam Bloom, Dorothy Werrgall and Gwyn Dickens.

Thank you for your donations The Graduate Union is fortunate and grateful to have had significant bequests over the last three years from Dr Phillip Law and Mr Ron Davey. Each of these has enabled us to do vitally needed building works and improvements that have included electrical rewiring, a major redevelopment of the ground floor of the Stella Langford Wing, repairs to the ageing rooftops of the eight terrace buildings and the installation of air conditioners in all rooms.

We are thankful also for the ongoing and regular donations of all amounts from our supportive and generous membership. No matter the size of these donations, each is important to us.

Members can also be very reassured that these donations are used entirely for the purposes specified by each donor or put towards the most needed cause at the time of the donation.

Hence, recently, we were able to refurbish completely the Resident Members’ kitchen by installing new stoves and gas tops, a dishwasher and more sinks and bench tops.

Following the death of her mother in 1996 and annually since then, Elizabeth Shaw (Mrs Michael Wright) has been donating for the upkeep of the Stillwell Room. Opened March 1965 in the current William Berry Wing terraces following the receipt of a bequest in the will of Frank Leslie Stillwell, the Stillwell Room was relocated to the ground floor of the main building which extends from 216 to 220 Leicester Street. The room is used frequently by our organisation and non-resident Members for a variety of purposes which include committee, government and research meetings, education forums, small formal dinners, and The Graduate Union monthly luncheons and Twilight Lectures.

The Graduate Union extends again its gratitude to Elizabeth Shaw for this year’s donation received in March for the upkeep of the Stillwell Room. Last year’s generous donation allowed us to construct custom built shelving with glass doors to display the mementos and artefacts loaned to us by The Stillwell family. This is located in the Stillwell Room (see photo on left) beside a portrait of Elizabeth’s great uncle, Frank Leslie Stillwell.
