Cheryl
Lacey

Cheryl is a mother of two and an educationist. Since beginning teaching in 1989, she has moved around and beyond classrooms in Australia and overseas, working to understand school education systems and the relationship between families and schools.

Your Children: Take the Lead on Their Education is Cheryl’s latest publication. In it, she places parents where she believes they should be: firmly at the centre of all decision making.

Cheryl has a record of active involvement in community service, most notably her longstanding membership of the Rotary Club of Melbourne and her recognition as a Dame of the Order of St. John ofJerusalem, Knights Hospitaller.

She has recently completed postgraduate studies in Parental Alienation, as part of the first group of professionals world-wide to complete such a course. Cheryl continues to write, speak and advise on the relationship between families and schools and how fundamental change begins locally.

October Luncheon

(Hybrid event)

Wednesday,

4th October

Professor Mary Galea, AM

“Advances in stroke rehabilitation and the continuum of care”.

Professor Mary Galea, AM FAHMS, is a physiotherapist and neuroscientist whose research program includes both laboratory-based and clinical projects with the overall theme of control of voluntary movement by the brain, and factors that promote recovery following nervous system damage.

Professor Galea is Professorial Fellow in the Department of Medicine (Royal Melbourne Hospital) at The University of Melbourne, and Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Victorian Spinal Cord Service. She leads the Program in Restorative Neuroscience in the Graeme Clark Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Melbourne. She has a strong record of intellectual leadership in physiotherapy in Australia, building research capacity and an evidence base when research in the discipline was sparse.

Over the past 30 years her primary research program in basic and clinical neuroscience has contributed to understanding the organisation and development of the motor system and its recovery from injury following nervous system disorders such as spinal cord injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. The application of technology, including neuromodulation, to aid rehabilitation has been a strong focus of her research in recent years. This includes the establishment of a technology-driven program to improve upper limb function, and the use of wearable sensors for remote assessment of changes in walking, as well as for assessment of rehabilitation outcomes in general.

Her current major project is an early phase adaptive trial of transcutaneous electrical spinal cord neuromodulation to improve hand function in people with tetraplegia following spinal cord injury. Prof Galea is Chair of the Board of the Stroke Association of Victoria, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of SpinalCure Australia, and the Clinical Governance and Research Committee of Spinal Cord Injuries Australia.

2023 Midyear Fundraising/ Membership Appeal

Re-imagining our Future as a Graduate Union in the 21st century

This year’s mid-year appeal will focus on increasing our membership, especially recent and early career graduates. This is a joint appeal by the Fundraising & Benefactions and Membership & Marketing subcommittees of The Graduate Union Council.

Here’s How

We plan to make Graduate Union Membership more attractive and appealing to young members – indeed all members. And we are exploring ways to involve all age-groups and make better use of our excellent facilities.

Here’s Why

Approximately half of our members are over the age of 60. For The Graduate Union to be viable into the future we need to attract young and mid-career graduates to enjoy the benefits of membership that we all appreciate.

So…

We are inviting you to nominate a new member, and for the 1st year this will be at a greatly reduced price. Alternatively, we will use your donation to help recruit new members, especially young graduates. Hopefully, new members will be selfsupporting in future years.

We are also investigating additional ways of involving and supporting young members, e.g., through networking, mentoring, and social events.

This one-off Membership Offer will be $100.(and not the normal fee of $150). (Additionally, we no longer charge a joining fee.)

Please note: As this is a fundraising membership drive, these donations will not be tax deductible. We will have a ‘welcome to new members’ and a ‘thank-you to donors’ event later in the year.
